Now that we are starting to feel the effects of winter weather, it is time to remind students of the uniform requirements. Softshell jackets are still able to be worn, or the new longer, waterproof jacket which is available from NZ Uniforms. Thermal tops are able to be worn under the polo tee shirts or checked shirts. These are to be black or navy. Hoodies and other non–uniform items are not acceptable. Students wearing skirts are allowed to wear navy stockings. There are some items of second hand uniform and new uniform pieces available at the school office, or you can join the Tokomairiro High Second Hand uniform page on Facebook by going to https://www.facebook.com/groups/1056602061990214. For any questions about uniform, please talk to your child’s dean.

Teacher Only Day
On Thursday, 23 May two teams of Year 7/8 students participated in the annual Rippa Rugby Festival in Balclutha run by Sport Clutha. On a very cold day the two teams competed against other schools from the South West district. Both teams won four out of five round robin games. Both teams progressed to the Quarter final stage but unfortunately had to play each other. It was a very tight game that could have gone either way but Blue team took the victory by one and made the semi-final. They played Blue Mountain College in the semi and unfortunately went down by one. It was a great competition that the students enjoyed. Many thanks to Lyn Clark for her help supervising and to the parents who came along and supported.

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through the second term and the end of our first semester is looming which means that many of our students will be completing assessments. Over the past few weeks I have been in and out of numerous classrooms and have seen so many of our students engaged in their learning and displaying our school values. I have been really impressed to see the hard mahi that our students are putting into their learning.
NCEA Common Assessments
Last week most of our Year 11 students and many Year 10 students sat the new NCEA Common Assessment Activity tests in reading and writing.
This was the first time that we have had students complete the tests. Students will be sitting the numeracy test this week. We were very impressed by how seriously our students have taken the assessments both in their preparation and also in the exam hall. These assessments are externally marked and while we have not been told when the results will be available we don’t expect to receive them for several weeks.
Inter House Volleyball
All our houses have now played one game in the inter house volleyball competition. In the first round Reid had a convincing win over Ross, and Malcolm beat Ayson in a very close contest. It has been great to see so many students going to cheer on their houses and participating.

Cross Country
Last Wednesday the sun shone on us in the afternoon for our cross country. It was a fabulous afternoon and our students all participated with enthusiasm. Congratulations goes to the following students who all won their division:
Minor Girls - Ellie Smith
Intermediate Girls - Shilah Milligan
Senior Girls - Pippa Greene
Minor Boys - Leon Healey
Intermediate Boys - Hunter Dodds
Senior Boys - Jacob Murray
Emergency Information
On Sunday evening we all received an emergency text message from the National Emergency Management Agency to test the system that they will use to communicate if it ever becomes necessary to do so. In our kura we also have a process for how we manage and communicate during an emergency situation. As a school we carry out fire drills, earthquake practice and we also practice a ‘lockdown’ situation so students know what to do.
If we are ever faced with a situation that causes us to lockdown the school, we will communicate to caregivers directly when there is information. It is therefore important that we have up to date cell phone numbers for our caregivers. Numbers can be checked at the school office or with your child's housegroup teacher.

Cross Country Results
Cross Country was held on Wednesday, 22nd May in cold but clear conditions. There was a good number of students competing, whether running or walking, collecting points for the House group competition. There were some stand out competitors in the girls across the age groups with good winning margins. In the Intermediate girls it was slightly closer with less than a minute between the first two placers. All the boys competitors were close with Minor boys top two having a 16 second margin, Intermediate a 37 second margin and Seniors a 5 second margin. Well done to all who had a go and those who wanted to compete. Thanks also to the spectators who came to support the students.

Getting out and about into our community is something that our tamariki really enjoy and doing this provides them with a wide variety of opportunities to learn about the world around them and what is happening in their local area. We also regularly discuss national events and celebrations with them, to build their understanding of the history of our country and the events that shape our lives as New Zealanders. Recently we have been talking to them about the significance of Anzac Day and the soldiers who went to war to fight for our freedom. We also read books about Anzac Day to the tamariki, baked Anzac biscuits, made poppies and played the Last Post song as part of the experiences we offered to commemorate this important day. This was followed by a walk to the centotaph to see all the white crosses and place our poppies in the memorial gardens. On our way back to the centre, the tamariki enjoyed a stop off at Moore Park, where they had a great time burning up their energy on the flying fox and the many other pieces of play equipment that we are very fortunate to have freely accessible in our local community.

Milton Medical Centre Update
With the cold days hitting hard it’s a good idea to prepare for winter ills and chills. We have a funded flu vaccine available for over 65’s, and the unfunded vaccine available if you don’t qualify. This costs $35. Please call to make an appointment and ensure you are protected from the flu this winter. Mask wearing is not compulsory but it is encouraged if you are unwell with coughs, colds and other potentially contagious illnesses, and to give yourself protection if you are immune compromised. You are also welcome to wait in the car until your appointment rather than sit in the waiting room – please arrange with reception.
Thank you to everyone who has called in advance for regular appointments and renewal of medications. This makes life easier for everyone. If you become unwell or have an urgent need please phone the practice at 8.30am Monday – Friday and we will triage your call. Our nurses are great at working through issues to establish the best care plan for you, so if you are unable to secure an appointment and you have concerns about your health please ask to speak to a nurse.
We continue to work with some very experienced TeleHealth GP’s. If your consultation does not require a physical, hands -on examination, you may be offered a TeleHealth appointment. We have received positive feedback about TeleHealth and encourage you to give it a go. You will still come into the practice and you will “meet” with our TeleHealth GP in a consultation room. TeleHealth is one way we are able to fill some of the gaps left by the nationwide GP shortage.
A reminder about our Friday morning walking group. This leaves the practice at 11.30am and is hosted by Health Coach Laura. Laura is also available to work one-on-one with you to take positive steps forward for improving your health. This includes:
• Empowering you to take control of your health and wellbeing;
• Helping you develop realistic goals;
• Encouraging good management of various health issues that you want addressed;
• Discussing how to be more active by doing things you enjoy;
• Laura is available on Fridays and there is no charge for an appointment to meet with her.
Our after-hours service is managed by Ka Ora – a rural service who have nurses and GP’s available for out-of-hours TeleHealth consultations (by phone and video-link), and can refer to the appropriate urgent care facility if needed. To access the after-hours service please phone the normal Milton Medical Centre number on 03 417 8226 and your call will be redirected.
Thank you to everyone in our community for your ongoing support of Milton Medical Centre.

About Blessed Box
Blessed Box was founded at the end of 2020 after a group of mothers based in the Clutha District saw the need for greater support of mothers in the postpartum period.
All relatively new mothers themselves, the Board members freshly remembered the challenges that came with bringing a new baby into the world and knew that if they had the capacity to bless new mums, then that is something that they should definitely do! And so, while sleep deprived themselves, they decided it was a good idea to start a charity; and Blessed Box Charitable Trust was born.
They believed that small gestures like meals or baking could make a significant difference during the intense postpartum period. Blessed Box aims to support a mother's physical and mental health during this critical time.
In 2023 the charity provided 163 families within the Clutha region with a gift box containing a family-sized meal, drink syrup, breastfeeding and sleep deprivation snack pack, a box of cupcakes and many other loving treats.
This heartwarming initiative is a testament to the power of community and the impact of small acts of kindness. We are constantly in awe of the generosity and kindness of our local volunteers and donors. Their unwavering support and contributions have been instrumental in the continued success of Blessed Box, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of them. Thank you for being a part of Blessed Box's journey and for helping us bring joy and support to those who need it most.
Expectant mothers or those who know someone who is expecting, or anyone willing to support this venture, can visit our website to learn more –www.blessedbox.co.nz.

News from the Trenches...
Greetings from coolish where the only place to be warm is at the RSA. As I'm writing this on Sunday where plenty of wisdom here
Our quiz night is only two weeks away on Friday 7th June at 7pm. Already we have over seven teams entered so make sure you get your teams locked and loaded. As a wee tip, get your rugby picks by Thurs that week to avoid confusion as it will be a highly charged event.
Just letting you know that bus trip to Roger Mahons Heritage Centre at Geraldine will now be on 29th June so put your name down if you are interested. Speaking of picks, this week match there is a game Big River Country women vs Dunedin Premier women on this week's games.
Now I've been kept out of the loop recently but I've had it secreted to me that there is a Calender being produced featuring outstanding RSA members in various seductive poses. I'm not at liberty to mention all the names but there are months featuring hale bales, nudity and the odd feather. So keep your eye out for these.
Toko Rugby Report
Last Saturday was our Club Day and unfortunately the weather God's didn't come to the party with bitterly cold conditions. However, this didn’t dampen a sizzling hot day of footy!
It started off with all junior teams playing at home and I watched some amazing superstars putting together some amazing efforts in trying conditions.
Toko Premiers took on Owaka for the highly sought after Dean Miller Trophy and Reg Phillips trophy. Toko started off with strong wind behind them and they opened the scoring with a excellent try to Harry Greer. Grandma Colleen was overjoyed!!! A couple of penalties to Jared Hayes and unfortunately James Agnew wasn't awarded a try meant Toko had a narrow 11-5 halftime advantage.
Toko opened the score in the second half through Scott Anderson before Owaka played conditions better and come home stronger to beat Toko 19-18. Toko unfortunately suffered some serious injuries which didn't help continuity of play. Toko have a fortnight to bounce back before taking on Lawrence away.
Toko Seniors took on Taieri for the Ken Bloxham trophy which both clubs love to have. Unfortunately Toko battled strongly but Taieri managed to come out on top. A bad weekend for Toko losing trophies.
Next week is Topp Cup matches being played at Milton so there will be a smorgasbord of top class rugby to watch with Toko players to the fore. So get along to watch SOHS 1st XV, Big River Country women and Southern Region teams playing. Get there early!
