Cultural Competition
Last week we held our annual Cultural Competition. It was a fabulous afternoon and it was so pleasing to see so many whanau attending. It was also a pleasure to welcome students and staff from Milton Primary School, Waitahuna School and the early childhood centres to our event. Our students and staff put many hours into practising their performances and the standard of performance was high. The competition results were very close with Reid winning overall by only four points. A massive thank you to whaea Clare Healey for all her organisation before hand and on the day, and to our judges Jolz, Justine and Catherine. See results on page 3!

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...
SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
We have had a very busy week at school with Cultural Competition, Open Evening, a trip for senior students to SIT, several sports trips, the first of our new recognition badges being awarded and ongoing NCEA assessments.
Recognising Student Contribution
Yesterday we held our first assembly since our Cultural Competition. It was also a special assembly because we awarded our first awards under our new recognition system. During the assembly over 60 badges were awarded to our students that recognised their contribution to their school community, their perseverance and also their achievements in the following areas of school life: Academic, Cultural, Sports and Service.
Course Selection Evening
All our ākonga have varied and big ambitions for their lives after school. It is therefore very important that students choose the best mix of courses for their NCEA to help them meet their aspirations. To help students and caregivers to understand more about the courses we offer and the pathways open to students we will be holding a course selection evening next week.
Our Course Selection evening for NCEA courses will be on Tuesday 3rd September starting at 6pm in the school hall. During this evening we will explain the requirements for NCEA and give details on the courses that we are going to offer in 2025. Course booklets will be available on the evening and there will be the opportunity to speak to individual subject teachers about specific courses.

It is always a bittersweet moment when we need to say goodbye to a valued member of staff. Kath Hills has been a Teacher Aide in our kura for the past 10 years.
During that time she has helped hundreds of students with their learning. We are very grateful for everything that she has done for our students and we wish her all the very best in her new adventures.
Youth Search and Rescue
Applications for the Youth Search and Rescue program are now open for students aged 14 to 16, with the deadline for applications being 30 September..
Youth Search and Rescue is a 3-year program that combines weekly classroom-style learning with weekend adventure-based education in the outdoors to apply the new skills acquired. Youth Search and Rescue train, mentor, and develop our rangatahi to become the next generation of Search and Rescue and Emergency Management volunteers. Students will gain:
• Outdoor education skills, survival, leadership, and team capability and confidence
• STEM competencies and NZQA qualifications to complement in-classroom learning
• Opportunities for community engagement and contribution, either voluntary or career
• Achievement of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards
• Advanced environmental sustainability and flora and fauna awareness
Open Evening
Last night we held our Open Evening for prospective students and parents. It was great to see so many families here. If you could not make the Open Evening but would like to know more about our kura then please contact the school office and we can arrange a meeting.

From the workshop...
Year 13 students have completed part of this year's project. The work involved forming the curved sections as well as all the machining of the component parts. The macrocarpa timber was supplied by local saw mills at a very reasonable price - many thanks.

s Saturday Market is Turning 2!
It's the Milton Saturday Market's two-year anniversary on the September 2024 and we'd like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has come and supported the community market along the way. We wouldn't have done it without your continued enthusiasm for it.
So far, the market has contributed over $5000 to the Tokomairiro Co-operating Parish, for the use of their facilities, to help with their good work.
As you can imagine, there have been lots of changes and plenty of challenges getting to this point (like health crises, major roadworks and economic downturns) but those things come to an end eventually. It can be tricky to persevere through it with a smile on your face, but the stall-holders at the Milton market always manage it, no matter what is happening outside.
A big thank you to Leanne Burgess for organising the trip and giving our students the opportunity to explore a different tertiary option.
You never know who might turn up at the market; we even had a visit from former Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and local MP Ingrid Leary, recently. Chris enjoyed one of Milton Butchery's beef sausages, hot off the barbeque, with onions and tomato sauce.
Over the past two years, we have hosted over 150 different stalls. Some of those people are local and attend regularly; others come from the Clutha District, Mosgiel, Dunedin or even further away. A handful of North Island craftspeople, who heard about the market on their travels, have called in and set-up stalls when they were passing through.
There are over 20 stalls booked for our 2nd birthday market, including many stall-holders we haven't seen for ages. It'll be lovely to see what's new, and find out what they've been up to.
We hope you will join us to celebrate this milestone on Saturday 7th September, from 10am to 1pm, rain or shine.
