Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...
SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
Last week was an action-packed one here at Tokomairiro High School and we have lots more planned before the end of the school year!
Year 9 and 10 Highlights
Many of our Year 9 and 10 students participated in the “Have a Go” week, organised by the Otago Secondary Sports Association. This fantastic initiative gave our students the chance to try sports like wheelchair basketball, offering experiences they might not have encountered otherwise. Meanwhile, other Year 9 and 10 students made great progress on our school mural, which is shaping up beautifully.
White Ribbon Riders Visit
We were also privileged to welcome the South Island White Ribbon Riders, who spoke to our junior students about the importance of respectful relationships. Their inspiring message left a strong impression, and the students thoroughly enjoyed the chance to check out the motorcycles afterwards. The Riders were full of praise for the respect and engagement shown by our students a true credit to our kura.
Highlanders Visit This Friday!
Excitement is building for this Friday, 29th November, when we’ll host the Highlanders! This is an amazing opportunity for students to meet the players and get autographs. Students are encouraged to wear their Highlanders shirts or dress in blue and gold to show their support.
Cups and Trophies Inventory
We are currently updating our inventory of all school cups and trophies from both the District and High School eras. If you have any trophies at home, please return them to the school office. Your help would be much appreciated.
Summer Reading Programme
This year’s theme for Year 9 and 10 is Read to Succeed! Students can sign up at the school library to borrow books for the holidays, boosting both their literacy skills and their enjoyment of reading. Mr D will be on hand to help students choose books, and there’ll even be treats for those who sign up.
Year 7 and 8 students are encouraged to join the Clutha District Library’s Summer Reading Programme, with chocolate rewards for participation! Librarians will visit classes soon to explain the details. Make the most of this wonderful opportunity and sign up!

A Quilt’s Journey Home
A wonderful piece of history recently made its way back to us. A lady from Somerset, UK, contacted us about a quilt she purchased over 30 years ago at a jumble sale. Embroidered in 1916, it features names linked to the Tokomairiro District, such as Littlejohn, Graham, and McKechnie.
We are fascinated by this unique artefact and keen to uncover its full story. If you have any knowledge of this quilt, please get in touch to help us piece together its history.
Bible Reading for the Week
‘I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness; I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High. Psalms 7:17
Anyone Hungry?
Recently, our Year 9 and 10 art students have had a the opportunity to create food sculptures using a range of different materials. Some of them definitely look good

Year 6 Orientation Day
Last Thursday we held our Orientation day for our incoming year 6 students. The children moved around different classes including Woodtech, Art, Homeroom and Maori. It was great to see them all excited and enjoying themselves. We had a shared morning tea and a few icebreaker games too. We are really looking forward to having them all here
The Year 9/10 painting class has been working on artworks to donate to Daffodil House in Dunedin. This was organised by Craig McGregor who works for the Cancer Society and was picked up by our awesome students!
Mural Progress
Students have been making the most of the sunny weather, and have been hard at work adding colour to their mural. It is exciting to see the different pieces come together to create this vibrant representation of our school values.

We try our best to publish articles on the week provided but due to space restraints we are not always able to. Year 7 and 8 Science
The past few weeks have seen our Year 7 and 8 students learning about the human body in Science. We have explored the circulatory system and were fortunate to be able to do a sheep heart dissection to see some of the structures inside the heart. We are now learning about the digestive system and how we gain nutrition from our food.

Science Block Upgrade
Work is well underway with our B Block upgrade. The windows have been removed, the rooms have been stripped out and asbestos cleared. About eight former students are working on the project and are now at the stage that they are running wiring for new lighting and heating, and installing new gas fittings. It is great to see how much can be achieved in just a few weeks. We are looking forward to seeing it progress from here.

News from the Trenches...
And that's the end of the footy season with Pick the Score being struck by George Henderson who was closest to the Italy vs ABs result. He is now walking around with a diamond encrusted walking stick.
The inaugural Darts Tournament has been approved and we are working on the finer details so look out for the entry form in the next few days. This sounds like a extremely fun event with plenty of interest already.
Our joker draw is getting up close to $3k to being won so make sure you are there on Thursday night to take your picks. Our Xmas Ham raffles are steaming out the door but I have been assured me there are still plenty of Hams to be won.
My spies have been out in force reporting latest gossip with a couple of prime stories being whispered to me secretly.
The first one involves a member who, while finished concreting and looking proudly at his achievement, drew his name in fresh concrete, unfortunately he spelt his name wrong and had to cover it up.
Second story involves a member who had car difficulty in Dunedin picking up a friend. Car failed to restart and after 10 mins contacted AA Road Service who were there in approx 1 hr, after a few minutes discovered the car wasn't in gear causing the issue.
Finally if you see a Maori fireman on Wednesday, give him a hug as he has another birthday and needs a fire permit for number of candles on his cake.
