Otago Secondary School Bowls Championship 2025

On Sunday, 23rd March, 24 enthusiastic students gathered at the Milton Bowling Club to compete in the Otago Secondary School Bowls Championship. With 12 teams playing under the Hong Kong Pairs format, the event saw strong representation from Tokomairiro High School, Logan Park High School, Kings High School, and Columba College. Although students from Bayfield High School, South Otago High School, and St Clair Primary had initially signed up, unforeseen scheduling conflicts

A notable presence came from Logan Park High School, led by Dan Greer, who brought a large contingent of students. Many of these students had previously trained indoors, making this their first experience competing on an outdoor green. Despite morning rain, spirits remained high, and players delivered some spectacular performances, showcasing the promising future of

A special congratulations to our overall winning team of: Dylan Carr (Tokomairiro High School/Waihola Bowling Club) and up were Hunter Dodds (Tokomairiro High School) and Jake Ward (Kings High School/Caversham Bowling Club), who

A huge thank you to the Milton Bowling Club for hosting the event and to all the volunteers whose dedication and support ensured the tournament ran smoothly. Your efforts continue to foster the growth and enthusiasm for bowls among our young competition in future events!

Impressive Attendance Rates

A few weeks ago, Mrs Wish shared how proud we were that Tokomairiro High School’s attendance had been above both the Otago secondary school average and the national average every single day in the first month of the school year. She is delighted to say that this trend has continued! Regular attendance is key to student success, so a huge thank you to our students and whānau for making it a priority.

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.

With just under three weeks before the end of term, our Year 7 and 8 students have headed off to camp today. I’m looking forward to hearing about their adventures when they return. Entries are now open for our final major house competition of the term Swimming Sports which will take place on Friday, 4th April.

Bowls Success

On Sunday, we entered a large group of students into the Otago Secondary Schools Outdoor Bowls Championship at Milton Bowls Club. Despite the rain, all of the students persevered and played exceptionally well. It was a hugely successful day for our kura, with Tokomairiro students placing first, second, and third! A huge thank you to Kylie Johnston for her time organising the event and training the players, as well as to the members of Milton Bowls Club who provided incredible support both on the day and in the lead-up to the competition.

Staff Professional Development

Learning at Tokomairiro High School isn’t just for our ākonga. This term, our kaiako have engaged in a wide range of professional development, from accelerating progress in literacy and numeracy to deepening their knowledge of specific learning needs. This week, Whaea Clare is travelling to Waitangi to take part in a national wānanga run by the Māori Achievement Collaborative. Whenever our teachers attend professional development, they return with fresh ideas on how we can enhance learning in our kura.

Artificial Turf – Help Us Bring It Back

Many of you will know that our artificial turf was damaged beyond repair last year after being lifted by strong winds. Unfortunately, the underlay had shrunk, making it impossible to reinstall.

We have received quotes for a new turf with a 25-year lifespan, but it comes at a significant cost. Right now, we don’t have the funds to cover the full cost, so we will need to fundraise.

This turf has been a hugely valuable facility for both our students and the wider community, and we’re committed to replacing it. If you or someone you know would like to help bring this vision to life, please reach out to us we’d love to hear from you.

Keeping Warm in Autumn

As the mornings get cooler, now is a good time to check that students have the right warm uniform options.

• Approved jackets: Soft shell, Code sideline jacket (NZ Uniforms), or a plain black or navy jacket

• KidsCan jackets: Available for those who need them just let us know

• Navy vest, merino jersey, Back Road jersey or older style woollen school jersey (available through PTA for $20)

Hoodies are not part of the uniform and won’t be permitted at school.

If you have any short-term uniform concerns, please get in touch we’re happy to help.

Join Our Wonderful PTA!

The Tokomairiro High School PTA is a vital part of our kura, providing invaluable financial assistance to our students. Whether it’s subsidies for camps and trips or funding for essential equipment, their support makes a huge difference every student benefits!

We are always keen to welcome new members. The PTA AGM will be held on Tuesday, 1st April a great opportunity to get involved. If you’d like to be part of this amazing group, please come along!

Students Enjoying New Science Labs

This week the Science department have been able to move back into our renovated Science labs. It is so nice to have new tables, new chairs, and much more light in through our new windows.

With brand new tables it was the perfect opportunity for the Year 11 Agricultural and Horticultural Science class to make ruminant and monogastric digestive systems out of playdoh. We have been learning about the parts of digestive systems and what each of them does.

Art in Architecture

Reily Mathieson (Year 12) shares his start to the year in Level 2 Painting. Reily is looking at architecture with a European theme and worked from Giorgio di Chirico as a starting point.

News from the Trenches...

Last Friday night we held our Darts Competition prize giving which had been delayed through situations beyond our control. However there was a large raucous crowd there that wanted to relive one of our many highlights of 2025. Lammy The Enforcer Moana and Ivan STORM BRINGER Mason received the major prizes along with best costume for entrants and supporters.

This coming Saturday the Patriots Motor Cycle Club who are holding a run leaving Mosgiel RSA and ending up at Milton RSA. This crew do an awesome job at raising money for charity.

Also for those with a sweet tooth, we have our Easter raffles underway and these are definitely very popular with members buying multiple tickets, don't think they are for sharing!!

We are also having our Poppy Day on 11th April so look out for our handsome volunteers around town. All donations greatly appreciated.

Allison 14, P. Grant 1. It was decided that the Milton Sub Assn would open for the season and with a snowball tournament on the 15th April at the Milton Bowling Club. Bridge

There has been so much happening at RSA there has been no room for gossip which I know members enjoy reading apart from the subjects concerned. However I've heard of people keen on getting to RSA, but there was a member who recently received a speeding ticket in their haste to get home. Finally another member dived into the Clutha river, perhaps practicing for the Olympics Diving or Swimming team, trying to rescue some whitebait gear. Our members always go the extra length!!!

Toko Rugby Report

On Saturday Toko looked at achieving a double header ambush with both the Seniors and Premiers taking on their West Taieri opponents.

Toko Seniors went through first and put up an excellent effort before finally succumbing 26-5 to a pretty slick West Taieri team. The signs are looking extremely promising with this young Toko Seniors squad this season and I envisaged they will be winning quite a few games this year.

Toko Premiers went with the hope of pig hunting vs West Taieri. By halftime they had put in a huge first half effort where they dominated territory but couldn't quite get the rewards they deserved. Halftime score was 17-14 to West Taieri with Dion Shaw and Scott Anderson scoring tries for Toko, was the ambushed happening??

West Taieri lifted their performance in the second half to run out 47-14 winners but the final score definitely flattered the home team. For Toko, Dylan Greer and Kaleb Shaw put in huge performances while McLeod Glaister and Deejay Kane showed skills in the backs.

Next week Toko Premiers take on Valley at home hopefully, by the time you read this, Clinton have managed to get themselves a team. Things are currently up in the air.
