Pink Shirt Day

We had a very successful Pride Month and Pink Shirt Day celebration on Friday. This was previously delayed due to sporting activities in May. A focus for the week was learning about bullying, the effect on others, and what you can do to stop it. This was very well received by the students. The Prefects coordinated a number of lunchtime events and as a result successfully earned $157.00 that will be donated to the Mental Health Foundation. Thank you for your continued support of these initiatives.

Student Attendance

Every day counts towards your child’s learning at school. Attending school gives your child the best opportunity to realise their full potential and do well in life.

Getting help if your child is not attending regularly

We know there can be important reasons why children do not go to school, such as long-term illness, bullying or financial challenges for families. If your child is affected by any of these, talk to your school first.

Your school will work with you to remove barriers to school attendance. There are many supports available to help make it easier for students go to school.

If you have more serious concerns, contact your local Ministry office.

Clean Up a Worthwhile Lesson

Last Friday during Period 5, the Year 7 and 8 students, along with Xavier, carried out a massive clean-up around the school and the local area as part of our Conservation Unit. The students were surprised to see how much they all collected. What a great effort!

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.

Mānawatia a Matariki

Ka mahuta a Matariki i te pae, ka mahuta ō tātou tūmanako ki te tau

When Matariki rises above the horizon, our aspirations rise to the year ahead. This week we celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year. This is a significant time for us all, a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future. As a school community over the past year we have united and are working together to make our kura a happy and safe place for all our students to thrive in. I am so grateful to work with such a dedicated team of staff and for our students who continually amaze me with their successes. Next week we will be acknowledging the success of our ākonga in our end of term assembly on Monday morning. I eagerly anticipate seeing how our students flourish during the remainder of the school year and into the future. We wish our entire school community the best as our nation celebrates this special time. Mā te wā, let us all find inspiration and unity in the stars of Matariki.

Pink Shirt Day

Last Friday the school was a sea of Pink as we held our postponed Pink Shirt Day. It was great to see our school unite together and support this important initiative by wearing pink and participating in the activities that were held throughout the day. Our students raised $157 from the mufti day money which will be donated to The Mental Health Foundation. A huge thank you to Mrs McClure, the Prefect Team and helpers for organising the day.

Our Year 7 and 8 students have been learning about conservation overrecent weeks. They learnt about the need to take care of our waterways to stop rubbish from entering ecosystems. As part of their topic the whole of Year 7 and 8 spent Friday afternoon doing a rubbish pick up around our school grounds, Taylor Park and also the Rugby Club. After an hour they managed to fill 10 large rubbish bags. The students took their mission very seriously and were quite surprised by how much rubbish they found!

Dress Swap

The School Ball is taking place towards the end of next term. This is always a fabulous evening but it can be an expensive evening for our students. To help with the cost and to make the evening more accessible to all students Madeleine Clarke, one of our Year 12 students, is organising a Dress Swap. However, for the dress swap to be successful we need help. We are looking for donations of dresses, heels, suits, ties and dress shoes of any size and colour. All donations can be dropped off at the school office and closer to the event students will be able to try on the items and hopefully find something new to wear to the ball.

The Genesis is a free publication, delivered weekly to homes and businesses in Milton, and is available on the school website, Facebook or via email. Indoor Bowls

Monday was our first Indoor Bowls Championship.

Our students have committed to three month’s training in the lead up to this event. We had a staggering 18 entries from Year 7 - Year 13.

The students took part in three games of 30 minutes each with the top eight moving through to post-section knock out.

Our 2024 champion is Marcello Mapuranga Placido, who narrowly defeated Year 10 student Tyrese Gemmell in a nail biting final.

Well done to all who took part and a special thank you to Chris Moffitt from South Otago Bowls for running our event. Thank you also to our volunteers, Ray Low, Barbara Read, Mollie Tiffany and Greta for marking the games. We wish our team luck as they enter their next stage of training for the South Island Secondary Schools competition in July.

Hockey Festival

Last Thursday two teams of Year 7 and 8 students participated in the Hockey Festival run by Sport Otago. During the day the students played multiple short games of Hockey, with the last game of the day playing against each other. Thomas Clarke (Year 7) and Khan Armstrong (Year 8) said that everyone really enjoyed the day and they had the opportunity to learn some new skills.

Upcoming Air Quality Study in Milton

Have you ever wondered about the quality of the air on the streets and in our homes in Milton?

Recently, monitoring by ORC has shown that on winter nights Milton has some of the country’s highest levels of air pollution.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) have joined with Otago Regional Council (ORC) to launch an in-depth investigation of air quality in the homes and streets of Milton. Dr Ian Longley will be leading the study. Ian is one of the world’s leading specialists on air quality in homes and small towns and has led many projects involving local communities in air monitoring. He also advises the Ministry of Education on reducing COVID-19 infection in schools. In July Ian will be installing air monitoring equipment in some homes and on the streets of Milton, so keep an eye out for it!

The project will be launched on 3rd July when Ian will be here to talk about air quality in Milton, and what he has learned from recent projects across the south. If you would like to learn more about this project, Ian will be holding an information evening on the 3rd of July at 7pm in the Tokomairiro Community Hub. All are welcome.

Toko Rugby Report

On Saturday Toko Premiers travelled to Clutha with a squad lacking in numbers and experience but still carried the Toko way with plenty of guts and resilience against a team looking for a championship. Clutha came out of the gate powerfully and had a strong 26-0 halftime lead. Toko responded with tries to Ethan Harrex and Kaleb Hayes to close the gap to 26-12 before Clutha went up another few gears to storm away with a comprehensive 5712 victory.

Fine efforts to Harry Greer and Shelford Meads the stand outs, but disappointed that not many Toko supporters were there to help the boys. This is when the need your support the most. Massive game this week as we travel to Crescent for the Eddie Scott Memorial Trophy.

Toko Seniors were looking at carrying on their sublime form for a third win in a row. Sadly they came up short vs West Taieri going down 43-19 with two tries to Bradley Frost and Tamati Orupe sitting down. So this team is getting used to the winning feeling.

Just a heads up that our last home game vs Clinton in a fortnight will be played early as it's same day as All Blacks vs England test in Dunedin. More details next week -The Judge

News from the Trenches...

Massive events have been held this week at the RSA so let's get into it.

Huge night on Friday with our games spectacular vs Fire Brigade going right down to the wire with RSA coming on top 13-11 in a nerve wracking contest. One of the best nights this year which is saying something as this is a boomer year. Thanks to the Fire Brigade for participating and I didn't need to flick the alarm in case they were winning. Congratulations to Bryan Forde for winning a rugby jersey that night.

Those that are booked on bus trip to Roger Mahan's Heritage Centre this Saturday will have to be there early. No later than 7am. Don't sleep in!

Our Sports Tipping Comp is coming to the crunch time and the prize giving will be held on Saturday 2nd August and I believe there will be a special presentation that night. You will have to be there to witness it. And this week for our Sporting Comp there is an added game Japan XV vs Māori All Blacks.

Also we have our annual All Black sweepstake where you enter a score for each test match. We also have raffle to win Corporate Viewing of All Black vs England test match on 13th July where you win refreshments and nibbles plus best seat in the house. So be quick to enter.
