Tokomairiro High School held their annual Athletics day on Tuesday, 18 February. The morning started off wet but warm with the House Group Chants and House group parade. Then the competition began. This consisted of Track events 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m and field events shotput, javelin, discus, long jump and high jump. One event had to be moved inside due to the weather but otherwise we carried into the afternoon sun and heat. The events were tightly contested and great to watch especially the house and teacher relays and the Tug of War between houses. We were grateful to have the Lions Club doing a sausage sizzle and Mr Whippy. We also had a great turnout from parents, grandparents and caregivers to cheer on the students. We were lucky to be able to coordinate with Milton Schools Athletics to run these days together and it proved successful again.

Rev Luisa Fruean Retiring
This last Sunday, 23rd February, saw our Heritage Church carpark again full for the thanksgiving service of Reverend Luisa Fruean.
Members from our Milton community, including residents from Ashlea Grove Resthome, and those of us from Tokomairiro Co-operating Parish came together, along with her family and regional church members to acknowledge the strength of faith, hope and love we have all witnessed as parts of her church family. Lovely words were shared also from the Pacific Islands Church (PIC) North Dunedin, one Reverend Luisa has worked alongside as their interim moderator, taking regular services and working with their Parish council.
Dear friends; Fergus and Mary Jane Sime joined Reverends Malu and Luisa and Annette Booth, on guitar, keyboard and piano providing beautiful musical accompaniment to four hymns and a closing blessing. The service was a celebration of her music, her love of the Bible, and recognition of the very special ways she had of bringing the messages of God to us through our five senses, often sending us home with little treasures to pass on, or to reflect on. A shared lunch was enjoyed by all after the service.
Reverend Luisa’s term ends on the 28th February, her last service being the monthly Ashlea Grove Resthome one, this coming Friday. She and Reverend Malu will be in Milton for a further month getting packed up, and have plans to retire to Invercargill.
We all give thanks for their time among us and will always remember their active ministry service with much love and gratitude.
Manuia te Tavini Vaine o te Atua – PIC North Dunedin May God’s blessings surround you each day – Tokomairiro Co-operating Parish.

News from the Trenches...
On Saturday we held our annual Fishing Comp in some tricky conditions according to the odd fisherman who didn't catch a lot. However the majority of those entered had a fantastic day with almost $1700 being raised for the Otago Rescue Helicopter which shows how much our awesome community appreciated the work they do.
During the auction there was some pretty fierce bidding between people that were chasing the highly sought after Blue Cod delicacy. Thank you to Andrew Haulage for being the major sponsor, along with Wayne Te Runa won the Bruce McLean shield for biggest catch by an RSA member. A heartening aspect was the large number of juniors catching a lot of fish. This was a hugely successful event, so thank you who assisted and attended.
Our Super Sports Comp is in full flight and it appears to have taken a vindictive twist. It appears the winner of last years NPC comp has played his joker early and taunted the rest of the entrants by saying, ‘if you want my crown, you're gonna have to chase me down!!!’ The challenge has been set.
Upcoming in a few weeks is our World Famous Spud Dig comp and next week I'll reveal all the details of this day as there are some exciting developments which will make this superb day even better. Stay tuned.

Toko Rugby Report
We're BACK and ready to go!!! I appreciate it's still only February but footy season has come crashing through the door. This season promises to be the most important in the last 25 years and the Committee have been working their tails off in the background in preparation. If you don't already know we are celebrating our 125th Anniversary Celebration during Easter this year. Make sure you have registered to ensure that you are included in creating history. To register, go to our Facebook page. If you are not on Facebook, contact AJ Philip, Laurie Allen or Pat Scanlan.
This coming Sunday we will be holding our Toko Juniors registration between 11am and 1pm so make sure your future superstars are locked and loaded. We have had great success with previous junior teams and it keeps our great club strong. Also if you find your kid's feet have grown, there will be a footy boot swap on that same time.
Following this, the Toko Axemen are making their 2025 season launch under the new coaching team of Josh Harrex and Dylan Bungard with a pre season game vs Edendale. I've heard they are a strong Div 1 team from Southland so will see if they are more than a crank up team!!! This match kicks off at 1 30. I've witnessed the boys have been putting in the hard work over Summer and just want to get playing. So if anyone wants to join us on an amazing ride this year, join up as a honorary member. Or if you are a business, you don't want to miss out on this publicity opportunity, come and join up.
See everyone there on Sunday -The Judge
Children Miss Out If They Miss School
Other children keep on learning while a child is absent. When a child returns, there are learning gaps. The child may feel: That the teacher did not explain Other children know more
They are not part of team work, in class or in the playground They are always trying to catch up on work or in activities
Costs to the child may include feelings of social isolation, loss of learning and social confidence and reduced self-esteem.
Learning new things is challenging some things com enaturally while other things take time and are only mastered after hard work. Help your child to be realistic and accept the challenges of being at school as that is what brings satisfaction and builds resilience.
Celebrate the hard won successes!!
