Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...
SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
Last week was a very big week for our school. Our Year Nine and Ten students went to camp at Tautuku. Sadly the weather was not great at the start of the week which meant that some of the planned activities could not happen but the weather improved midweek so the students could all go abseiling along with spending time in the great outdoors. A huge thank you to all the staff and parents who participated in the organisation and running of the camp. After months of planning we also had the school ball last Friday night. It was a great night and went off without a hitch. The ball committee did an awesome job in organising the event, which had the theme of Hollywood/RedCarpet. The students all looked amazing and all arrived in style! It was certainly a highlight in what has been a very long and busy term.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori
Although last week was officially Te Wiki o te Reo Māori we are acknowledging the week this week instead. Whaea Clare Healey along with her 9 and 10 Te Ao Māori classes have organised events for students to participate in every lunchtime this week. It looks like it will be lots of fun!
House Point Update
As we are in the last week of term students were given an update on the house point competition in assembly on Monday. This term there was one major competition, the Cultural Competition along with an inter house Dodgeball Competition, the House Quiz and then points from attendance, values and recognitions. The standings from each category are:-
Milton Butchery
Student Representative on the School Board
For the past year, Year 13 student Matt Hutton has been the student representative on the School Board. Matt has done a fantastic job during his term and we thank him for his contribution to our kura.
However, a student term on the board is twelve months long and finishes in September. This year four students stood for election and after the student vote Year 11 student George Stark was elected to the Board. I am confident that George will be a great representative for our student body and will bring a valuable perspective to discussions.
NCEA
As we are now at the end of term three and our senior students only have a short amount of time before the NCEA exams start next term. It is important that all senior students know where they are at in terms of credits and where they need to focus their attention over the next few weeks. It is important that all NCEA students use the term break to complete any outstanding internal assessments and to start revising and preparing for the external exams.. We also urge all of our students to make sure that they put in the extra effort needed to try and secure either a subject endorsement or a certificate endorsement.
2025 NCEA Course Selection
All students who will be in Years 11,12 and 13 in 2025 need to ensure that they have completed their course selection by Friday 27th September. This needs to be completed on the portal that is accessed via our website. If caregivers have any questions regarding courses for 2025 or the course selection process please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Clash of the Colleges
On Friday the 13th of September, eight of our sharpest Ag/Hort students attended the first Clash of the Colleges at Telford, run by AGR Futures.
Prior to the event we did some serious practice-Setting up a handpiece and drench gun, putting an insulator in a fence, CPR, changing a ATV wheel, breakfencing and the list goes on.
Big thanks to Alan our Groundsman who provided the gear and a fair amount of constructive comment on their progress at practices and was in charge of transport.
The competition was attended by schools throughout Otago, 16 teams took part, five minutes per activeamwork was the key Our team achieved top marks in the ATV wheel change.
A great day enjoyed by all. We left keen to compete again.

Our nurses would like us to remind everyone to please try and phone for script renewals at least a week – 10 days before your medication is due to run out so any tests or appointments can be organised in plenty of time.

Another week has roared by and my ban has been lifted which means I can get all the facts correct in this column. Not that anything is made up.
We had a very successful meeting with the Remembrance Army last Wednesday with lots of interest going on for the cleaning up of the serviceman graves. Stand by for future information in October.
