Wednesday 22nd May 2024
On Monday 20th May the Homeroom team spent the morning planting native trees with Alan and some year 12 students in Salmond Creek. They learnt about the importance of the different trees and the role they play in making our creek area more sustainable.
We also spent some time with Craig Simpson from South Otago River Care. He taught us about water quality and how we can protect our waterways and make them more environmentally friendly for eels and other fish. It was a cold but very enjoyable experience!

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
We have had another fabulous week at school. Last Friday a large proportion of our students took part in the annual sports exchange with East Otago High School. While we came second on the day reports from our staff were that our students participated well and had a great day. On Monday it was also awesome to see our Year 7 and 8 students taking part in a native planting programme at Salmond Creek. They were supported by some of the Year 12 students and also staff. While it was very cold the rain did stay away for the time that the students were outside and there were certainly a lot of happy faces amongst the students.
NCEA Common Assessments
Over the past few weeks our staff and students have been working hard preparing for the NCEA Common Assessment Activities (CAA). The first window for the 2024 the Literacy and Numeracy tests starts on Thursday. Most students in Year 11 and many in Year 10 will be completing the Reading, Writing and Numeracy tests. All students who are sitting the tests have been told of the times and the expectations. The schedule is:
Thursday 23rd - Reading
Friday 24th - Writing
Tuesday 28th - Numeracy
Pink Shirt Day
Last Friday was Pink Shirt Day, a day where kura and other organisations across the motu unite and stand up against bullying. Our school usually participates in this day with a Pink themed Mufti Day and also a variety of activities. However, this year the day coincided with the annual East Otago Sports Exchange which meant that a very large proportion of our students were out of school for the day. With this in mind, we decided to delay Pink Shirt Day in our school to a day that all our students are at school. So while we did not acknowledge Pink Shirt Day last week we are planning a day to spread aroha and kindness throughout our school community.

School will be closed for instruction on Monday 27th May for a Teacher Only Day. This teacher only day is one of the nationally provided days overseen by the Ministry of Education. Our teachers will be joining with other teachers from Dunedin to participate in a range of There will be no availability to supervise any students on this day.
Winter Illnesses
As we head toward the middle of this term rapidly and with the cold frosty mornings that we have seen in recent days it seems timely to put out a reminder about winter illnesses. We have been advised that the winter ‘flu season’ has arrived sooner than expected and that with the drop off in vaccination rates that there is a higher than usual chance that there will be an outbreak of measles across the country. Te Whatu Ora have information on Measles and also the MMR vaccine on their website in case you need any advice.
As a school we want to see our students here everyday but we do understand that there are times when our students are not well and the best place for them to be is at home. We ask that if your child is not well enough to attend school that you contact the school office every day of the illness.

Each year, hundreds of teachers bring tens of thousands of students to the Careers Expo held nationwide. This event offers students a unique opportunity to engage face-to-face with a broad spectrum of employers, industry professionals, government departments, and training providers. In addition, the Expo provides teachers with valuable resources to educate and inform their students about Vocational Pathways, including online content and study materials.
Tokomairiro High Year 11 students attended the Careers Expo and found it extremely beneficial. They were actively engaged at many of the stands, asking questions and participating in the various activities offered. When asked about their highlights, they responded:
“Talking to the electricians, they were convincing and sold their jobs really well” - Maddie & Emily
“Loved the beach balls! And the building stand” - Millanian
“I got lots of pamphlets” - Cam
“Learnt lots about the different jobs that are available” - Jackson
“I went there and knew what I wanted to do and I got the information I wanted” - Caitlyn
“It wasn’t long enough. We needed more time.” - Jacob
“I really liked the Dive Otago stand” - Kendra
“Free stuff was nice but needed more time” - Reily
“All the stands were good and it was a great opportunity to learn stuff” - Kaitlin
“Talking to the SIT people” - Chloe

No game for the Premiers this week as they look to get over their mid season bumps and bruises in preparation for a hard stretch of games coming up. First up this Saturday is our annual Club Day with all Toko teams playing at home with games kicking off from 10am through until 3pm when Toko Premiers take on Owaka who will be fully of confidence after beating West Taieri last week
This game has significant importance with both Reg Phillips and Dean Miller trophies up for grabs with both teams wanting to secure the prizes.
The Toko Senior Bs took on Strath Taieri on Saturday and started off with a strong effort in the first half before eventually going down at full-time, with a much improved performance and a win is not too far away.
It's also our chance to thank our wonderful and generous sponsors so calling on all sponsors to come along and watch a good afternoon footy with a couple of refreshments.
The clubrooms will be rocking next Saturday after the games.
Also coming up on 1 June Toko Rugby is hosting annual Topp Cup matches between Southern Region and Central Otago. This will be an exciting opportunity to watch some top class rugby with matches with Women, Development and XV before the main game. Toko players Jared Hayes, Lockie Finch and Dejay Kane have been rewarded with selection after strong club form.

It’s been quite a week for Indoor Bowls this week. Interclub was played, Moneymore played Milton Country Club and had a huge win taking all games 16-2, 11-4, 9-6 and 9-2, while Glenledi and St Mary’s had a draw. Glenledi’s wins were 6-4 and 11-4 while St Mary’s were 6-4 and 12-2:
After two weeks Moneymore have 4 points, Glenledi 2 Country Club and St Mary’s 1 each.
This weekend saw the southern zone ladies 8 played in Balclutha. 15 games played over Friday Saturday and Sunday with Milton’s only representative being Moneymore’s Barbara Read. The very final points table saw Southland take out the Trophey with 122, runner up was Timaru South Canterbury 113. 3rd was Otago 107.5, 4th south Otago 85, 5th Composite 72 and 6th Central Otago 40.5. The Sandra Gould Trophy was won by Southland’s Suzanne Mackie.
