Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...
SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
As we head into week five I can say that the first half of this term has been very busy and productive. Our students have displayed our school values of respect, responsibility and excellence consistently both inside and outside the classroom. They have also shown a great amount of resilience when we have had challenges with the boiler. But I am very pleased to say that our new more sustainable boiler was turned on for the first time yesterday. There is still a bit of work to do on this project but we are hopeful that our heating challenges are almost behind us.
Cultural Competition
We are very excited that our annual cultural competition is happening again this week. Our students and kaiako have all been practising hard since the start of the term and if the practices are any indication then it promises to be a fabulous afternoon. We are looking forward to welcoming students from the local primary schools and early childhood centres to be part of the audience. The competition starts at 1.30pm in the school hall. All caregivers are welcome to attend but we ask that you are seated by 1.20pm. The event will not be live streamed this year but our Toko TV team will be creating a video that will be uploaded to our Youtube channel after the event.
Japan Trip
The response to the 2025 Japan trip has been overwhelming. The trip is now full but students who are still interested can be placed on the waiting list in case there is a cancellation. Currently we are arranging accommodation and flights and at this stage we are being advised that we may need to split the trip into two groups to make logistics easier.

Snow Closures
Despite the daffodils beginning to appear we did see some snow flurries on Monday which highlighted that we could still have snow this winter. If there is a day when there is a significant amount of snow we will make the decision in the morning whether we are able to open, open late or need to close for the day. This decision will be based on whether our staff can make their way safely to school and if the school buses are running. If we do decide to open late or close then we will email caregivers as soon as we can to advise you of our decision.
Course Selection Evening
Our Course Selection evening for NCEA courses will be on Tuesday 3rd September starting at 6pm in the school hall. During this evening we will explain the requirements for NCEA and give details on the courses that we are going to offer in 2025. Course booklets will be available on the evening and there will be the opportunity to speak to individual subject teachers about specific courses.
Open Evening
Last week Erica Milligan and myself visited each of the Milton primary schools and met the current year six students. During our visit we gave each of the students some information about our school to take home and answered any questions the students had about high school.
Our Open Evening for prospective students will be on Monday 26th August starting at 6pm in our school hall. After an initial introduction to our kura and an explanation of the transition process there will be a school tour and the opportunity to talk to our wonderful kaiako and current students. If you are unable to make the evening but would like the opportunity to come and have a look around our facilities, please contact the office and we can arrange an appointment.

Punctuality is Important
Arriving at school on time is important.
It is not surprising that if a child is late they will not know what is happening. Regular absence means gaps develop and learning becomes harder.
In secondary school some children will not go into class late, and miss the whole period this creates bigger problems.
Children who are at school:
• Have no learning gaps
• Know what is happening
• Enjoy school more
• Can achieve to their full potential
• Have increased self-esteem
• Establish good relationships with friends and adults.

What is SPEC?
Hello my name is Micaela Laing ’m going to tell you about SPEC.
You might be thinking what is SPEC? Well, great question.. Let me tell you. It stands for South Pacific Educational Program. SPEC is a qualification you will get if you complete 11 SPEC books.
Well, you might be thinking, what are SPEC books? SPEC books are different modules you need to complete. You can choose what book you want to do, but for the first two I recommend doing it as a class so you get the hang of it. You can choose from many subjects, including Art, IT, Cultural Study, Food, Sports, Keep Fit, and many more.
I am the first student at Tokomairiro High School to complete this and get the New Zealand Certificate in Skills for Living qualification.
What has SPEC done for me? Well, first thing first I started it in 2022 and finished in 2024, so it took me two and half years to do it. SPEC has done heaps for me. It's helping me get into the outside world after school finishes and knowing what to do when you leave home.
I recommend doing this if you want to know what to do when you leave home, and it's fun. Trust me, the first two were a bit hard for me but then I got the hang of it and that's what helped me.
I would like to say a big thank you to my principal, Mrs Wish, and my teachers for letting me do this. great opportunity for you, too. This course is only for years 9-13, so take this deal! It's really good for you to know what to do and it will help you in life out in the world and even when you're at home.
South Otago Cross Country
On Wednesday five Year 7 students competed in the South Otago Cross Country meet in Clinton.
Congratulations to all the students who gave it their best

Onwards and Upwards
As part of Gateway Programme, Jeremy Coleman (Year 13) has had the opportunity to join Larry Hughan from Foley’s Mechanical to construct the chimney for the new school boiler.
Jeremy helped to install brackets and place the sections of the chimney together, ready for the boiler to be commissioned this week.
He really enjoyed the experience and has learned that he is not afraid of heights!!
CACTUS Programme a Joint Effort
Project Bruce in collaboration with Sport Clutha and Tokomairiro High School is running a Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit and Support (CACTUS) programme in term four. The programme will be open to any students from Year 8-13 and is designed to build confidence, support leadership, teamwork and physical skills. Participants will be involved in a variety of activities and challenges which will culminate in the “Longest Day” – a chance to put all the skills they have gained to the test.
Sessions will run for 8 weeks from 6.30am 8am on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Breakfast is included after every session and on a Friday a guest speaker will come in to talk to the students while they eat.
CACTUS has been run at schools throughout New Zealand and now it’s Tokomairiro’s chance to get amongst the positive outcomes the programme can deliver. Nomination Packs will be available from the THS Office and from the Tokomairiro Community Hub.
Any questions Please contact Steph at Project Bruce on 021 266 0942 or email her at greenbrucecommunities@gmail.com
Op Shop+ News
The weather is finally starting to warm up now, and in no time we will be dusting off our shorts and jandals!
Winter is always a bit slower in retail, as people tend to stay at home next to the warm fire- and we don't blame you! This winter we have been so pleased with the number of people that have been braving the winter weather to come and visit us in the shop. We have also had a very steady stream of excellent quality donations throughout the last few months. Thank you to everyone who supports our store- it is greatly appreciated.
At our AGM this week, we will farewell Sue from our Board. Sue was instrumental in getting this idea off the ground, and has been involved in every step of getting the shop to where it is today. We would like to thank Sue for all of the hard work and commitment she has put into our shop. The shop will continue to run as usual with the lovely Steph and Stephanie ready to greet you alongside our team of incredible volunteers.
A note from Sue“It is with sadness that, due to ill health, I have resigned from the Milton Opportunities Charitable Trust Board. It has been a long road getting to where we are now and there are so many people that I would like to thank for their hard work, support and assistance along the way. Without them we would not have the wonderful shop that we do have.
The original board - these people were the ones who put my original vision into action by painting, carpet laying, readying the store for fittings etc, stocking the store, picking up items, coming to the weekly strategy meetings assisting with funding applications, etc - Luciana, Mirjam, Cheryl, Cath, Steve, Irene, Guus, and Rob. Also husbands who also assisted - Gav, Frank and Nico . Cheryl and Gav are still involved and do a wonderful job. Our two volunteers who have been with us from the beginning and do a spectacular job - Chantelle and Anna . Krystal who looked after the store through good days and bad for so long. Victoria and Jasmine who gave up their Saturdays to work in the store. Our first two trainees - Rihani and Cassie. Fern and Trey, who have taken on a big task and I know will do well. Stephanie - our new Store Manager. I am sure she will put everything she knows to good use. My husband, Nevile, who has put up with me spending 20-60 hours per week on a dream and assisting wherever he could along the way. Last, but by no means least, I would like to thank our wonderful community. You have gotten behind something new and supported it all the way. Without your support the store would not be what it is today. Your generous donations and purchasing have put our shop on the map. We now have people from Dunedin, Invercargill and Central Otago coming specifically to our shop and donating as well. Thank you so much and I wish everyone well for the future.”

We look forward to supporting this excellent initiative, should be an epic night out" Bulletproof Convertible, a New Zealand -based three-piece swamp rock outfit featuring original songs, guitar, double bass and drums, soaking in rhythm. Full noise, 50's influenced and danceable as all hell. Dark Surf meets dirty RnR Rebel. A unique collection of musicians; Silas Waring - Guitar, Alex Ramsay - Drums and Paul Southworth - Double Bass. Together they produce an all-original sound, familiar, driving, relentless and danceable. Silas Waring's songwriting delivers broken characters framed in locations and situations known to all of us yet understood by few. His uncanny ability to visualise a scene is compelling, he draws you in with a picture and before you know it you are singing the hook along with the band all the while grooving and bumping to the beat.
As a note to any Milton community groups for our 2025 season we would be happy to look at running a similar event at your fabulous old town hall so if you are keen for a great social night out and raising some funds for your cause get in touch through our band facebook or website pages Facebook: Bulletproof Convertible Bulletproof Convertible - original 3 piece swamp rock

News from the Trenches...
G'day from someone who must confess not picking Otago in picks last week. I've been constantly reminded about my lack of loyalty by at least four members who picked Otago. So this competition is humming along nicely
On Friday we hosted the Patriots DFMC who very generously donated a substantial amount to our Welfare Fund which was greatly appreciated. This crew are supreme in their support of local RSA.
On Saturday we had the latest AB test where one highly respected member commented that he doesn't go to watch rugby live anymore as the RSA has the best venue and unbeatable atmosphere. The pick the score jackpot has now increased to over $300.
Now I've heard about a member that while in Australia had a close encounter with a kangaroo which came off better than the vehicle RSA member was driving. No more Tie me down Skippy!!!
