Building Upgrades

A significant amount of work has already taken place on the Science Labs but one of the next phases is some of the facia needs to be removed and this contains asbestos.

Scope Group (via Nailedit Building Limited) have been contracted to undertake asbestos removal. They will be starting this on the 23rd of November, and we understand this work will be completed over the weekend. Scope Group are an A & B Class licensed Asbestos Removal Company as is required by Worksafe.

All removal work will be completed as per the following Acts and Regulations:

• Health and Safety at Work Act 2015

• Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016

• Approved Code of Practice for the Management and Removal of Asbestos

To keep everyone safe, fencing and signage will mark the work area. We kindly ask everyone to respect these boundaries and avoid the area during the removal process. Thank you for your cooperation as we continue to improve our facilities.

BYOD for 2025

Looking ahead to 2025, our kura will be transitioning to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) system. Year 7 and 8 students will continue to have access to Chromebooks during school hours, while older students are encouraged to bring their own devices to enhance their learning. Details on recommended devices and the BYOD agreement form are available on our website and at the school office. Our preferred supplier, Noel Leeming, offers a selection of approved devices and special deals will be available for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Homeroom Update

Have a Go’ Week

This week, some of our Year 9 and 10 students are making the most of the opportunity to try a different sport in a programme run by Otago Secondary Schools Sports

Last Thursday, the Homeroom classes had a visit from Tiffany and Liv from the Milton Library. They talked to us about some Milton history and we looked at some photos of Milton from years ago. It was really interesting and was a great start for our Social Studies unit called Then and Now. Each Monday all the Homeroom classes are having a visit from Kim our school guidance counsellor. She is focusing on students' wellbeing. These are interactive lessons and have been going really well.

The students are travelling to Dunedin each day to share their experience with students form other schools in sports such as dodgeball, pickleball, wheelchair sports and

News from the Trenches...

A shorter report this week due to personal circumstances and also not being at the RSA much recently, but I do know that ABs pick the score MUST be struck this week as it's last game of the year vs Italy. The pot currently sits around $110 before this week entries. Icky Caruthers just about scooped the big prize with his score vs France, but just missed out, so get your selections ready.

Also flying out the door are our Xmas Ham raffles with plenty being won already so make sure you have a ticket courtesy of Milton Butchery finest selection.

Also if you are looking for a Xmas Present we have RSA polo shirts and jackets that are looking superb as modelled by our fashion models.

This coming Friday we are having our annual Handle Club Xmas party so if you are a member, get along on for specials, raffles and another excellent night.

We are possibly looking at running a Darts Tournament in January over three Friday nights with a maximum 16 entries. We are wanting to copy the professionals with both nicknames and walk on music. Am awaiting go ahead from heirachy to see if it's a goer. Stay tuned. - Private Spike Pike

Two $1000 Hato Hone St John scholarships for prospective new healthcare workers in Milton.

Hato Hone St John is offering two $1000 scholarships to Milton residents and students who are looking to take up a career in healthcare.

Funded by donations from the local community, the two scholarships offered by the Milton Area Committee are to help residents and students who wish to study a healthcare-related course or degree at a time when communities struggle with the cost of living, and the country suffers a growing shortage of doctors, and nurses across multiple disciplines.

Hato Hone St John Milton Area Committee Chairperson, Marie Smith says it is important that local fundraising is used to give back to our local residents and students.

“Otago University and Otago Polytech are a stone’s throw from Milton. A large portion of our local high school students typically study some form of health-related study there.

“After tremendous local fundraising, we wanted to give back to the local Milton-Bruce District, and to support the healthcare industry nationwide.”

Applications can be submitted from Monday 4th November until Sunday 1st December 2024, with successful recipients being notified by Friday 6th December. The minimum age for applicants is 16 years old.

Contact oli.blackbourn@stjohn.org.nz for an application form, or any questions.
