Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...
SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
The first block of AKO weeks finished last week, and across the school many assessments have been undertaken during this time. This week we have a Year 11 Art trip and also a senior Agriculture and Food Technology trip to Central Otago. We look forward to hearing all about the trips upon their return.
Athletics Success
On Saturday, a group of students headed to Dunedin for the Otago Secondary School Athletics competition. All students did extremely well, qualifying for the finals in their running events and smashing their personal bests! Our under 17 mixed relay team of Shilah Milligan, Ty Fraser, Natalie Dobson and Hunter Dodds came an impressive 3rd, with a time of 55 seconds, a massive achievement considering they were racing against boy-only teams. Other standout results included:
• Tremaine Fraser: 4th Discus, 5th Javelin
• Shilah Milligan: 5th 200m
• Ty Fraser: 3rd 400m, 6th 200m and Discus
• Thomas Lee: 6th 200m and 100m
• Sioeli Pulu: 3rd Shotput
• Hunter Dodds: 3rd 100m and 5th 200m
• Andrew Scanlan: 3rd 200m
Touch Rugby
Our Senior A and Development teams hit the fields in Balclutha on Sunday for their second tournament. The energy was high and it is fantastic to see our players' skills and teamwork reaching new heights every time they play. A huge thank you to the staff who gave up their weekend to support our teams.
Year 13 v Staff Netball
The atmosphere was electric on Friday for the Year 13 v Staff (and invitational) netball match! With nearly the entire school cheering from the sidelines, it was a high-stakes, fast-paced game. After a hard-fought and "mostly" fair battle, the score ended in a thrilling 10-all draw. It was a fantastic way of bringing the whole school together.
Community Connection
Last Friday, a number of our Year 9 and 10 students volunteered their time to collect money for Child Cancer at Four Square. It is wonderful to see our ākonga giving back and supporting such a vital cause.

BYOD and Digital Readiness
As we head toward the Common Assessments next term, having a functional, fully charged device is no longer optional - it is a critical requirement for learning. All Year 9-13 students are expected to bring their device to school every single day. We want to ensure no student is disadvantaged, so please contact the school office immediately if there are any issues with device access so we can assist.
School Uniform
With the winter chill starting to bite, it is important that all students stay warm while maintaining our school identity. A reminder that hoodies are not part of the Tokomairiro High School uniform and should not be worn. We have a variety of high-quality, warm options available through NZ Uniforms. If you need assistance with obtaining a winter coat, please reach out to us - we are here to help.
Turf Transformation Update
Exciting news for our sports facilities! The turf for the main hockey court is officially packed into a container and is beginning its journey to Milton. We are expecting work to begin later this month, which will mark a massive step in transforming our school grounds. We are still pushing hard with fundraising to get the second turf installed alongside it, which will truly create a world-class space for our students.

Attendance Matters
Attendance & The STAR Plan
Supporting students to be at school regularly is our top priority. This year, we are implementing our new Attendance Management Plan, which follows a clear directive to ensure every student is accounted for.
A key part of this is the STAR plan, which focuses on identifying and removing barriers to attendance through early intervention.
In line with Ministry expectations, we will be following up on all absences strictly. Please be aware that contact will be made by the school if a student is absent, even if a phone call has been made, to ensure our records are 100% accurate. We encourage you to check the fortnightly reports carefully and contact us immediately if there are any discrepancies.
The full Attendance Management Plan is available on our website.
Kindo Community Shop
We now have an option for members of our community who do not have children at our school, to be part of our fundraisers and purchase items online in our Community Shop.
Currently we have back issues of the school magazine, and a link to sponsoring our turf. Watch out for camp fundraisers and other exciting goodies coming up!

Community Casket Weaving
Last weekend a group from the Milton and Tokomairiro Community and surrounds gathered for the final weekend of a harakeke weaving course where they produced a full-size waka wairua/ casket in an 18 hour session. The course was held over five weekends every second week and guided by tutor Marcanui Taura of Taura Toi.
The group, who started with varying skill levels, wanted to learn to weave a burial casket, two different forms of baby baskets, big carry-all bags, baskets for placentas, and clay flutes for pregnant whānau to play to baby. The aim was to have a resource in the area, a group of people who can come together when needed to meet the needs of their local community and was inspired by a funeral/ tangihana workshop funded by Tokomairiro Waiora.
The course was hosted by e Whare Puāwai o Tokomairaro and supported by funding from the Clutha Distict Council and Tokomairiro Waiora.
The waka wairua (casket) will be on display in the community once dried.

Museum & Information Centre
Visitor numbers have been on the increase these last weeks with folks coming from all regions throughout New Zealand and around the globe. Cyclists and their supporters continue to enjoy the trails and support local businesses.
On display this month is a selection of cameras and associated equipment and photographs. A group visit of Otago Settlers Assn members enjoyed viewing the Red Cross Quilts and all the other displays with a lot of great comments.
A recent donation of photographs from the family of the late Blair Read of the Queen’s visit and street parade has created much discussion, just who are those people in the pictures.
On the miltonmuseum.nz website you can now see a small collection of pottery we hold here. Go to Collections, explore collections, random images, this will bring them up. The Past Perfect program we use for cataloguing allows us to use this method of sharing. A learning curve for museum helpers here.
On 17th May we will hold the annual Book Sale in the Coronation Hall, we would be grateful for your support and donations of books are appreciated.

LGU & Putting1 Veteran’s Cup, Aotearoa Cup & Coronation Medal - 10th March 2026
And away we go again highlighting the many adventures of the Milton RSA. Finally after a jam packed couple of months, I can take a breath to keep up with all the adventures going on. Next up is our Wild Foods Night on Saturday 28 March. If it's half as good as previous years, this will be a great night with plenty of surprises for you to try. Some people not initially keen on putting different things in their mouth, but once tried they always wanted more. Coming rapidly is our traditional Anzac Day commemoration which over the last decade or so has brought together the community as a mark of respect and I anticipate this year to be similar.
We're almost at the stage where the scores will be covered for our Super Sports Comp which kicks off with addition of deception between the entrants when they play their joker. Stress levels go up a few notches. Still waiting on the local Club Rugby Draw to be included. If it gets delayed I have a few curve balls lined up as a temporary replacement. No real gossip this week as I've been busy with other adventures but I'm sure some mishaps or misadventures are around there for me to locate. Take it easy.
