The first Toko CACTUS has now wrapped up for 2024! The last three weeks have involved lifting tractor tyres, a run to the Milton Coronation Hall to the Dojo Training Studio. Also a trip to Balclutha for a game of ‘Capture the Flag’ with the South Otago High School CACTUS team and also an early morning swim at the Milton Pool.
We have had some more very interesting and successful guest speakers including ex Tokomairiro student Heidi Renata who has a business called INNOV8HQ where she mentors rangitahi to follow their dreams. Also we have had local Carl Schiller bring in his amazing modified bicycle and gear like his -40 degree sleeping bag, that he will take to Alaska next year to ride in a race across the snow, and Katie Moodie from Sport Otago came along and spoke about how her experiences in life has shaped her career path.
Last Saturday we had our ‘Longest Day’ which is the Graduation Day for the CACTUS Team! The team were dropped off at Lake Road and walked/jogged down the bike track to the Waihola Lakefront. From there they kayaked around the Lake and then the team had the challenge of lifting up a car, which was a goal set in the first week of the programme. The body of the car was lifted but not quite the tyres! They put in the greatest effort and worked as a team and that’s what the programme is all about!
We ended the morning with a lunch and presentation of awards. Many thanks to the parents that helped with breakfasts and for getting the rangitahi places they needed to be. Many thanks also goes to Kelvin McSkimming who has dedicated his three mornings a week as the CACTUS Trainer and has given these students confidence, physical skills and mental strength.

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
As we reach the end of 2024, it is a wonderful time to reflect on the many achievements and milestones of the past year.
Last Tuesday, our Prizegiving was a fitting celebration of the hard mahi and outstanding accomplishments of our ākonga. Makayla Wills was awarded Dux for 2024, with Elsie Clark receiving Proxime Accessit. We were also privileged to enjoy an exceptional piano duet by Makayla Wills and Marcus Wills, as well as a fabulous performance from our kapa haka roopu. Congratulations to Nirvana Collins and Madeleine Clark, who have been named as Head Prefects for 2025. They will lead alongside prefects AJ Nixon, Annie Graham, and Charlotte Lennon. We also extend our gratitude to the 2024 prefect team for their leadership and contributions throughout the year.
Our guest speaker, Jake McKay, delivered an inspiring address, sharing advice he wished he had known when he was at school. It was an evening filled with pride, joy, and optimism, attended by whānau and community members who have been such a vital part of our school’s success this year.
A heartfelt thank you to the PTA, the Board of Trustees, and local businesses and community groups who have supported Tokomairiro High School this year. Your contributions have been invaluable in helping us provide the best opportunities for our students.

Activity Days Fun!
During the last few days of term, students got to choose activities from fishing, to cooking, movies to zorbs
-D4 was a hive of activity for Activities Day. Mrs Nelson and Mrs Bungard worked alongside students who made stained glass biscuits, Tim Tam truffles and Chocolate balls . They then packaged them and gifted them to friends and family. Lots of techniques and skills came into play, especially time management ! I believe there was a fair share of taste testing along the way. All in all there was some lovely baking produced.
-Fishing at Taieri Mouth was all go, with some beautiful fish caught!!
-Our group went to Balclutha where we used the zorbs and table tennis tables. The zorbs were very funny and tiring to use. Then we walked to

UpCYCLE Open Day
Project Bruce has been working behind the scenes with Southern Youth Development and Clutha District Council to create a new and exciting asset for the Milton community. After a lot of hard work, we celebrated the launch of our UpCYCLE workshop on Saturday 24th of November with our first open day. This workshop provides a creative and sustainable way to breathe new life into old bikes, turning them into refurbished models that can be reused by anyone in Milton.
Many families and individuals came along to the open day and left with smiles and bikes which were in considerably better shape than when they were wheeled in, thanks to the help of the extremely talented Conan from Southern Youth Development.
Why are we doing this?
Diverting Waste from Landfill: By collecting old bikes and usable parts from Mt Cooee, the workshop is helping to reduce waste by keeping these items out of landfills. Instead of being discarded, the bikes are given a second chance at life, promoting environmental sustainability.
Creating Quality Bikes for the Community: Through refurbishing old bikes, UpCYCLE is not only creating high-quality bikes but also making them accessible to the community. These bikes can be gifted or sold for a koha (donation), ensuring that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has access to affordable, reliable transport.
Free Bike Mechanic Skills Training: The workshop offers a fantastic opportunity for locals to learn bike mechanic skills at no cost.
A Community Space for Bike Repairs: serves as a space where anyone can come and work on their own bikes with assistance from volunteers. Whether someone is looking to repair their bike or learn how to maintain it
We good people who are interested in learning bike mechanic skills and, more importantly, sharing those skills with others.
UpCYCLE offers a fantastic opportunity to get free hands experience and training while contributing to the community in meaningful ways.

Tūpuna Healing Aotearoa
Tēnā koutou katoa, Some may know me as the teacher aide from THS, others as the cook at Milton Little Citizens or even the lady who worked nights at Night ‘n’ Day Milton. These are some of the roles I have played in the Tokomairaro rohe.
I’ve birthed three of my own tamariki and have whāngai many. I have one moko who whakapapa to me and 17 they I am blessed to be a part of their lives.
I lost my left breast to Lobular breast cancer, been diagnosed with CDH1 mutation gene requiring me to remove my full stomach which was the best choice as it had gastric cancer through the lining. YES, I CAN STILL EAT NORMALLY!
News from the Trenches...
Greetings for the final message for 2024. Santa has checked his naughty and nice list and I can confirm that there will be more members not receiving a present this year.
This is just a short recap of 2024 activities for this year. Its been another busy year chocked full of activities at the RSA with plenty of fun times throughout the year. We have had tremendous support with our annual Spud Dig, Super Sports Comp, NPC Tipping Comp, just a few of the many highlights. Anzac Day was another highlight with the pleasing feature being seeing the number of younger people taking part in the annual march. This gives me hope that this will continue to be a strong feature for many years to come.
I lost my partner Doe Toia April 24 to Bile Duct cancer. He to had gone through big changes before this including COPD, and a double lung Transplant.
Our children had a rough ride over the last four years dealing with both parents being in and out of hospital.
During all of this I chose to study Te reo, Tikanga, Honohono and L3 Business studies because Doe and I talked about life for me after he was gone. I found that Honohono and other healing modilities really helped both of us through our illness. I found strength from learning Honohono and also a knowing of who I am and what these gifts I have had all my life are.
In November 24 I opened my business: Tūpuna Healing Aotearoa. So please come unlock the ancient wisdom of Rongoā Māori. Reconnect with Your Spiritual Essence
Our healing sessions incorporate Honohono (spiritual/energy healing) alongside the soothing practices of Mirimiri and Romiromi, offering a holistic approach to rejuvenate your hinengaro (mind), tinana (body), wairua (spirit) and making changes to whakapapa (genealogy lines).
Embark on your healing journey by visiting : www.tupunahealingaotearoa.com
We look forward to welcoming you at Tūpuna Healing Aotearoa.
Special thanks go to my committee and other members who have assisted throughout the year which has helped greatly with smooth running of the club as we continue to grow our membership base. Just a reminder that the 2025 Subs are now due and the Membership Cards are now waiting behind the bar. Special thanks goes to Donna Williams for her hard work also.
Keep an eye on both our social media pages for our Xmas Holiday hours over the next couple of weeks. Also coming up in January is our inaugural Darts Competition which kicks off on Friday 10th January with costumes and walk on music hopefully creating a huge event. The organisers have assured me it promises to be a fun night
Merry Xmas and keep yourself safe over the summer break and we will see you in 2025.
