Tokomairiro High School Newsletter & Community Noticeboard
Wednesday 18th September 2024
After a four-year break, we were thrilled to participate in this year’s Otago Polyfest in Dunedin last Wednesday night. Our performance was a tribute to our culture, kura, and the wider Tokomairiro/Tokomairaro community. Through kapa haka, we sought to express our school values of Whakaute (Respect), Haepapa (Responsibility), and Hīranga (Excellence). Ka nui te mihi, thanks to our Pouako, Kaiako, and whānau for their unwavering support.

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
As we head rapidly towards the end of Term 3 we haven’t slowed down at all. This week we have Year 9 and 10 camp at Tautuku which I am sure is going to be a lot of fun even if a little muddy! Also, number of Year 7 and 8 students are participating in the PCT challenge and a large proportion of our senior students are enrolled for a Health and Safety course. I think the highlight for the week though will be the long awaited Senior Ball on Friday night. This week is also Te Wiki o te Reo Māori which is something that we value at our kura. While this week we will be making a concerted effort to increase the amount of te reo Māori we use in our daily lives at school we will be acknowledging Te Wiki o te Reo Māori next week once all our year 9 and 10 students are back from camp.
Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award
We are proud of all our students and their achievements both in and out of school and this week one of our students attained a very prestigious award. Year 13 student, Elsie Clarke, attained her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. The Duke of Edinburgh awards are internationally recognised and the Gold Award demands a massive amount of commitment to complete which is why less than 10% of people who start the Duke of Edinburgh awards attain the Gold Award. In assembly this week Elsie explained what the awards system involved and what she had gained by completing it. We are extremely proud of Elsie’s achievement.
NCEA
The end of term three means that the NCEA exams are just around the corner.
If you have driven past our kura this week you may have noticed that we have started to clear the old swimming pool area. This is part of the plan to update the front of our school. I would like to thank all the staff, students, parents and friends of our school who came and helped out last Saturday during the working bee.
All students who will be in Years 11,12 and 13 in 2025 need to ensure that they have completed their course selection by Friday 27th September. This needs to be completed on the portal that is accessed via our website. If caregivers have any questions regarding courses for 2025 or the course selection process please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Wednesday last week our kapa haka roopu travelled to Dunedin to perform in Polyfest. It was a long day for our students and kaiako but we could not be prouder of the way they performed. All the hard mahi that they have put into practising certainly paid off.

In assembly last Monday our senior students were advised that they need to start planning their study schedule now and to make sure that they use the school break productively. It is important that all senior students know where they are at in terms of credits and where they need to focus their attention over the next few weeks.
We also urge all of our students to make sure that they put in the extra effort needed to try and secure either a subject endorsement or a certificate endorsement.
Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei. Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain.
Also a huge thank you to whaea Clare Healey who put in countless hours into rehearsals for the performance, as well as Mr Elijah Smiler and Ms Jane McEntryre who also put in many hours on the lead up to Polyfest and on the day of the performance.
Last Friday eight senior students competed in the first ever farming Clash of Colleges held at Telford. Clash of the Colleges is not just about fun and games. It's about encouraging teenagers to improve their skills and have a lot of fun doing it. It's an opportunity to bring together teens focused on a food and fibre career path, providing them with a unique platform to learn, compete, and network.
Our students represented our school impeccably on this day and had some really good results. A big thank you to Mrs Suzanne Nelson and Mr Alan Robinson who accompanied the students on the day and also to other staff and friends of our school who helped the students to prepare.

We are very pleased to announce that last week five of our Year 7 students were selected for the South Otago Touch teams.
Under 14 boys – Dominic Dobson, Ned Scott and Oliver Foster
Under 12 boys – Ty Fraser
Under 12 girls – Taya Robinson
We wish these students the best of luck for their upcoming games.
Beginning on 23rd September, for a month, Council will carry out another consultation around our new community Library/ Service Centre and Swimming Pool. This is due to the latest pricing of the project which reflects comprehensive design and construction detail and overall cost increases. This change in cost is not unexpected.
How did we get here?
In short, we have two important community facilities that are at the end of their functional life. The current Centennial Pool has served us well for its projected life expectancy of 50 years (it is in fact 58 years old, built in 1966). However, it is no secret that issues with the water table and land stability have caused significant damage, forcing expensive, temporary repairs over recent years. As well as the pool itself, plant and hardware are ageing and may fail. Currently, the pool is only open for six months a year and doesn’t have a ramp, so accessibility is an issue.
There is now significant risk that our current pool could essentially break down and be closed. Permanently.
The library, which was designed as an office building in 1944, requires extensive earthquake strengthening and remedial work. This option would incur significant cost. In fact, potentially as much as a full replacement, but would still lack the essential space and services of a brand-new facility.
Both facilities are extremely important day-to-day and are at the heart of maintaining and strengthening our community. Not only are these facilities basic requirements but are essential to ensure our town is able to reach its full potential.
To give you all the information you need, the Bruce Community Facilities Trust will be laying out the evolution of the project, answering your questions, and sharing the journey. Check out the flyers in the Genesis and visit the website at www.brucecommunitypool.nz
Bible Reading for the Week ‘And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose’ -Romans 8:28
On the evening of Monday, 9th September, Tokomairiro High School was ably represented at the Rotary South Otago 2024 7-8 Speech Contest at South Otago High School. Dahara Williams (Year7) spoke about the significant responsibility that the government has for leading initiatives to counter climate change; Rory Lister (Year 8) presented his view on Artificial Intelligence and its role in cheating and plagiarism; Khan Armstrong (Year 8) spoke about why E-Sport should be recognised as a sport in its own right. Competition was fierce as 39 contestants from the South Otago region represented their views on the range of topics which they had been asked to select from.
Our candidates, although not placing this time, put in thorough preparation, by researching and presenting their topics to a high standard. We congratulate them for representing Tokomairiro High School.

The SPEC class has had Scott Martin from the Clutha District Council in to talk about recycling in our region. Mr Martin is the Waste Education Officer. He spoke to the class about what you can and can't recycle, how to prepare items for recycling, and he had a look at our Tetra Pak cleaning and collecting initiative. We saw the finished product of SaveBoard, which is where our Tetra Paks will be sent. Mr Martin answered the questions from the SPEC class and we all shared our ideas.
Pictured here with our Tetra Pak collection and work so far are Jayden, Bronson, Mr Martin, Alex, Micaela and Peter. RRR... Reuse, recycle, reduce! Ko au te whenua, te whenua ko au
So much happening at the RSA this week from upcoming events to entertaining news even including a member banned!!!
On Wednesday 18th September at 7pm a reminder that the Remembrance Army is holding a meeting as they look at establishing a group to maintain RSA members graves etc, so all welcome to attend. Excellent initiative.
Also upcoming will be the Spuds to purchase for the 2025 Spud Dig so will advise you when they are available to be purchased for our members to work their magic. Spuds Monthly could possibly be sending reporters to cover our World Famous Comp.
This Saturday there will be AB vs Australia test kicking off at 5 45pm so enter the winning score and pick up over $400 jackpot. Also our NPC comp is getting tight with those who have played jokers looking at hanging on while those who haven't are finding stress levels increasing. You only have three weeks left to play the joker.
Our Membership Draw was struck two weeks in a row however that member didn't collect as he was currently banned.
Finally I have a couple of stories about our members who do maintain high standards of behaviour. Congratulations to both Casey Irvine and Nick McKay who put on their cowboy hats and leather chaps to rescue a horse who got into trouble in water. Word was they wanted to ride it home!!!
Also there was a scenario of a member who resides in Perth getting into bother as a result of driving while it's hailing heavily, clearly not much hail in WA.
As you can see, it's all happening in the premier social establishment of South Otago so you need to be there!!!

I would especially like to thank the local businesses that kindly donated such amazing prizes for the multi draw community raffle; the volunteers who so cheerfully helped on the day, and the effort that Stihl Shop put in to make the campaign a success.
So many of you generously supported the day. We raised $4950 on our stalls, raffle and collection boxes.
