Te Reo Māori Assessment
Tēnā tātou katoa
The Senior Tikanga class has been learning all about different types of karakia that can be used for certain events, and occasions. Karakia are Māori incantations and prayers used to invoke spiritual guidance and protection. In the Karakia assessment, they had to recite an appropriate karakia for a particular hui. We chose our school assembly as our hui. Although they were very nervous and worried about what could happen, they did a great job and passed their assessment.
Tūwhitia te hopo, mairangatia te angitū! Feel the fear and do it anyway!
Stained Glass Art
Te toi whakairo, ka ihiihi, ka wehiwehi, ka aweawe te ao katoa. - Artistic excellence makes the world sit up in wonder.
Ayson Wardell and Felix Papalii display their personal stained glass crests. Students looked at work by Roy Miller before completing their own designs. Awesome work!
Uniform Reminder
Now that we are starting to feel the effects of winter weather, it is time to remind students of the uniform requirements. Softshell jackets are still able to be worn, or the new longer, waterproof jacket which is available from NZ Uniforms. Thermal tops are able to be worn under the polo tee shirts or checked shirts. These are to be black or navy. Hoodies and other non–uniform items are not acceptable. Students wearing skirts are allowed to wear navy stockings. There are some items of second hand uniform and new uniform pieces available at the school office, or you can join the Tokomairiro High Second Hand uniform page on Facebook by going to https://www.facebook.com/groups/1056602061990214. For any questions about uniform, please talk to your child’s dean.

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...
SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
It sometimes amazes me how much happens in a few days at a high school and I really can’t believe that this is week three already. This week marks support staff day on Wednesday. Our kura could not operate without the tireless effort of our amazing team of support staff and I along with the teaching staff are very grateful to each and every one of our non-teaching staff who work at Tokomairiro High School.
Recognition System
As a school we have always recognised the achievements of our students but we have now formalised a recognition system that is clear and easy to follow. Mr Simpson explained the new and yet unnamed system in a recent assembly. The new streamlined system will recognise students in four categories: Academic, Sport, Cultural and Service. There will be bronze, silver and gold awards available in each category and these will be awarded at a special awards assembly. For each category with the exception of Academic students can submit a nomination that will be submitted to a committee for review. So far there have been multiple nomination forms completed and I am really looking forward to the first awards assembly later this year.

Last week we welcomed our new Sports Coordinator. I am very pleased to announce Rebecca Mallon has been appointed to this position. Rebecca has already hit the ground running with winter sports starting, our first annual sports exchange on Friday and also cross country next week.
Volleyball
This term there will be an inter house volleyball competition. This will take place on Thursday lunchtimes. To launch the competition last week the Student Selects played the Staff All Stars. It was a tough fought battle with the lead changing multiple times during the game but eventually the Student Selects won the game by a point.
Darts
Darts is proving to be a very popular activity for our students. Last Friday afternoon we were very fortunate to have the help of Stan Westwood from the Mosgiel darts association. Stan came to help our very enthusiastic darts players to upskill and develop their technique. He will also be helping us find a way to play other schools without the need to travel.
Values
We have for many years now had the school values of Whakaute/Respect, Haepapa/Responsibility and Te Hiringa/Excellence. These values are embedded in everything we try to do around school and are values that we feel are very important. We have recently had a visual representation created for each of our values which are below.
NCEA Common Assessments
The first window for the 2024 NCEA Common Assessment Activity Literacy and Numeracy tests start next week. Most students in Year 11 and many in Year 10 will be completing the Reading, Writing and Numeracy tests which will be held on the mornings of Thursday 23rd, Friday 24th and Tuesday 28th May.
Teacher Only Day
School will be closed for instruction on Monday 27th May for a Teacher Only Day. This teacher only day is one of the nationally provided days overseen by the Ministry of Education. There will be no availability to supervise any students on this day.

Bible Reading for the Week
“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. .” - Psalm 143:10
Marine Biology Trip
In the first week of this term our Year 12 and 13 Biology students spent three days participating in a Small Animal Study at the Marine Centre in Portobello. Year 12 students were studying the Rocky Shore community. They were able to go out and sample the population, as well as take measurements such as the salinity of the sea and the light intensity of the shoreline where the animals were found.
Year 13 students developed their own study using the Half Crab. They carried out various individual studies which included whether light, ph, salinity and temperature affected the crabs' movement and time it took for them to reshelter. We were also very fortunate to be able to observe the dissection of a dogfish (which is a type of shark) and a rather large octopus that they had in a tank, which had been brought into them around six months ago and was getting ready to be released back into the wild. It put on an amazing show for us on two of the days of our trip out there and was great entertainment, especially around meal times when it was chasing its dinner around the tank!
The Science Department would like to take this opportunity to thank the PTA for helping with the funding for this trip and to Rose, Nicole and Cheryl-Marie for supporting our students.

Toko Rugby Report
On Saturday the Toko Premiers travelled to Heriot where they last won in 2004 which shows how difficult it is to get a victory
Toko Premiers ripped in right from the outset with much better intensity and accuracy from previous weeks. They were rewarded with an early try to DJ Kane, however Heriot responded with 17 unanswered points. Toko bounced back with an excellent team try to Lightening Lockie Finch and a moment of brilliance to Dylan Greer which gave Toko a narrow 19-17 lead at halftime.
Toko continue with their dominance with further 2nd half tries to Damon Clement and Jared Hayes before Toko running on fumes late in the game which allowed Heriot to close the result to a well deserved 36-27 victory to Toko.
Toko played a high octane game which made for outstanding viewing on their best performance of the season. Standouts were DJ Kane, Liam Kingma, Kaleb Hayes and Dylan Greer but the whole squad outplayed their opponents.
Unfortunately Toko Seniors had to default last weekend which is disappointing to hear. If you commit to playing on Tuesday at least follow them with it.
Toko have the bye next weekend but on 25th May is our Club Day so all teams playing at home with a full day planned. All our wonderful sponsors come along on that day for some excellent hospitality as we thank you for your contribution.

Interclub successfully returned last week. Moneymore played St Mary’s and beat them 3 games to 1. Moneymore won 8-7, 14-11 and 6-5 and St Mary’s win was 20-6. Glenledi & Milton Country Club tied 4-all. The Country Club won 12-5 and 8-7, while Glenledi won 9-1 and 8-4. Final points after one round are Moneymore 2, Glenledi & Milton Country Club 1 and St Mary’s 0. Milton’s Peter Grant was in the winning team of South Otago‘s N.Z. Mixed Fours. He teamed up with Christine King and Colleen and David Fenton to beat Alanna and Chris Moffit, Stephen Preddy and Yvonne Thomas 10-6 in the final. Next day he was runner up to Robert Wilson losing 127. There were 16 entries with seven qualifiers. Peter narrowly knocked out Alistair Allison 7-6 then put paid to Barbara Reads hope when he beat her 15-6 in the semi finals.

May is rapidly disappearing as quickly as the temperature has dropped. Still plenty of warmth and good times emitting from the RSA.
Sadly I have to report of the passing Ray
McLellan who for many years led the Anzac Day March and always looked resplendent in his impeccably maintained Naval Uniform. Ray always had plenty of stories and enjoyed a laugh over a quiet whisky. RIP Ray. We had an excellent turn out to our AGM last week which reflects how we continue to build a very strong base of members.

This week the scoreboard will be covered up for the remainder of the Tipping Competition so now is when the craftiness comes through and the bluffing is cranked up a notch. I think a few tears (not many) were shed when the Highlanders thrashed the Crusaders last week, most of the tears belong to Bruce Good so make sure he's ok.
