The Bowling Club is coming to Milton!

If you haven’t already heard, The Bowling Club’s delicious, affordable kai is making its way to Milton! Starting soon, you’ll be able to pick up your hot meals every Monday and Wednesday from the Tokomairiro Community Hub right in the heart of our community. But before we tell you how to get your hands on a warm, wholesome feed, here’s a bit of backstory on how it all began.

The Bowling Club began as a humble little food truck, battling the cold southerlies of South Dunedin. Run by the hardworking duo Jackie and Liam, the truck became a familiar sight on King Edward Street, with queues of hungry locals lining up for hours in the chill. Fast forward to today, and their kai is loved by communities all over Ōtepoti – and now they’re coming to Milton to share the warmth even further.

How to Order Ordering your kai is easy as pie. Here’s how: 1️. Head to the deliveries page: thebowlingclub.co.nz/collections/delivery-orders

2️. Click on either ‘Monday’ or ‘Wednesday’ depending on your preferred pickup day.

3️. Choose from the weekly delivery menu (it changes every week!) and add your meals to your cart. 4️. In your cart, select ‘Milton’ as your collection point and include any notes (like dietary needs or hot sauce requests!). 5️. Add your payment details. If you need a discount code or would prefer to pay by bank transfer, flick an email to: admin@thebowlingclub.co.nz

6️. Once you’ve ordered, you’ll receive a confirmation email and/or text.

7️. Your food will be ready for pick-up at the Tokomairiro Community Hub between 4️pm and 5️pm on your delivery day. Order window opens: Fridays at 1️2️pm

Cut-off: Midday on the day of delivery (Monday or Wednesday) Volunteer Drivers Needed!

The Bowling Club runs thanks to an incredible crew of volunteer drivers, who not only deliver the kai but also receive free meals for their whānau. We're currently looking for a backup driver for Milton. Want to help? Get in touch at: outreach@thebowlingclub.co.nz

The Tokomairiro Community Hub would love to give a massive thank you to The Bowling Club for thinking of us and bringing this amazing service to our town. Your mahi means so much to our whānau, and we’re beyond grateful for the delicious kai you bring.

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.

There’s a lot happening across the kura at the moment from cultural events and sporting achievements to trips, leadership opportunities and NCEA assessments. It’s great to see students engaging in a wide range of activities and making the most of what’s on offer. Below are some key updates and reminders for the coming weeks.

Cultural Competition 2025

At this week’s assembly our annual Cultural Competition was introduced an event that has been part of our kura since 2️001️. It’s a well-established tradition that brings our school together to practise and perform items that reflect who we are and the values we hold as a community.

This year, students will perform:

- Our school waiata

- Our school haka

- A Matariki waiata

The focus is on participation and shared effort building house spirit and strengthening connections across year levels. As I reminded students, “Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.”

My strength is not that of an individual, but that of many.

Student Opportunities and Events

- On Monday ten Year 7️ and 8 students are in Dunedin attending a Young Leaders course, building their leadership skills and confidence.

- Last Thursday and Friday, over 2️0 senior students completed a First Aid course, gaining useful certification and practical knowledge.

- This week, all Year 1️1️ students will travel to the Careers Expo in Dunedin, while Year 1️2️ Geography students are also out on a field trip applying their learning outside the classroom.

-We also have over a third of the school attending the first of our annual sports exchanges on Friday against East Otago High School.

Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) – Next Week

Next week brings the first round of NCEA Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) for Literacy and Numeracy. These assessments are completed online and contribute 1️0 co-requisite credits toward NCEA.

Students sitting these assessments should make time for some extra preparation this week. Teachers are working with students in class, but any extra effort at home will also be helpful.

Teacher Only Days 2025 – Advance Notice There will be two Ministry of Education-approved Teacher Only Days this year on Friday 3️0th May and Friday 1️4️th November. School will be closed for instruction on both of these days. Please note these dates in your calendars.

Waihola/ Clarendon Women’s Institute Report

Our April meeting was held on the 2️8th April 2️02️5️ with ten members present.

The Fun Day in May was successful for the club. B Earl won a trophy plus the club received the membership trophy. Thanks went to D Clark for writing and printing our 2️02️5️ programme. J Keith was presented with a 4️0 years service badge to WI plus flowers. J Barclay was presented with a 2️5️ years service badge plus flowers. The motto was - " Age is an issue of mind over matter - If you don`t mind, it does not matter"

Our speaker was Therese Winter who told us about her Dutch parents activities before and after WW2️. Her Dad grew up in a three storied house that had hiding cavities within the home. As a child her father was often sent out to see a statue of a Monk and to see if it moved. Therese has a picture of this statue which is outside a church. When WW2️ began in 1️94️1️ her father was captured and was taken away by train. But he managed to escape from the train and couldn`t be found. If he had have been found it would have meant instant shooting. Eventually he joined the Dutch Marines in Indonesia and was awarded the Bronze Cross for his work there. Therese`s parents married and eventually arrived in NZ where he found work in the North Island.

This talk was much appreciated by the club as our April meeting remembers Anzac Day. A large box of Anzac Biscuits were donated to the Milton RSA to be given to their members.

Lunch ended the meeting. Our May meeting is to be a Movie either in Balclutha or Dunedin, followed by lunch out.

Toko Rugby Report

On Saturday Toko hosted a double header of matches vs Clutha with both the Seniors and Premiers taking on their old adversary.

In the first match Toko Seniors narrowly were defeated in a close match 3️2️ - 2️7️ with Clutha scoring winning try in last couple of minutes. Trey and Levin were outstanding for Toko while the rest of the team played a major role in almost getting the victory. Special mention to Phil Scott who brought up 1️00 games for Toko Seniors. This team continues to gain experience to the younger members and every week they raise their standards and expectations. Let's keep that going. In the second match of the day Toko Premiers took on Clutha for winner taking South Otago banner. Clutha brought their A game and ran out victorious 2️8 1️7️. Clutha s ability to break Toko's defense line proved decisive which Toko struggled to contain them. Toko's resilience featuring again as they scored last try to James Agnew as they kept hammering away until the final whistle. Dion Shaw completed an outstanding team try with the other Toko try. Next week is the start of round 2️ and Toko takes on Valley at home. If Toko maintained present form it should ensure they will make Top 4️ semi finalist. Let's get along and support the boys as there was another large raucous crowd last week.

Bible Reading for the Week

The Rebus Club of Milton

The Rebus Club of Milton met on Tuesday April 1️4️, and the guest speaker was Mike Moeahu. Mike was born in Dunedin and on leaving school began an electrical apprenticeship with the Dunedin City Council. His life in the electricity industry has taken him all around New Zealand, to Australia and to many other countries, His role now is the Principal Generation Engineer for Manawa Energy which is based in Tauranga.

Mike spent 1️0 years between 1️982️ and 1️992️ based at Waipori - then a thriving community of about 5️0 residents, a two-teacher school, a community heated swimming pool and a volunteer Fire Brigade. It was there that his involvement with the Fire Service began and to date he has served 3️8 years with this essential service.

Mike spoke of and showed charts of many interesting aspects and statistics of New Zealand’s electricity system, with the flow from Generation (currently from gas, coal, hydro, geothermal, diesel/oil, battery, wind turbine, and solar) to Transmission, to Distribution and finally to us - the consumers.

New Zealand's first large-scale grid-connected solar farm was commissioned in November 2️02️3️.

90% of New Zealand's electricity is supplied by four major companies : Genesis, Contact, Mercury and Meridian.

Many questions came from members following Mike's interesting talk.

Lex Adam thanked Mike and presented him with a small gift. The May meeting is on Tuesday May 2️0 at the RSA at 1️0 am. Committee please be there at 9.3️0 am.

The speaker is the local Milton Police Constable Gramos Groescho. Gramos has asked that an invitation be extended to anyone in the community who may be interested in learning about joining the NZ Police Force.
