This season the Toko Takahe team had some really hard games. However each week they went out there with a great attitude and gave it their best. It was great to see the improvements each week. Thank you to Sharna, Charlotte and Bec who gave up their time to coach and mange the girls. Well done Toko Takahe!

New School Blues System
We always like celebrating the success of our ākonga and we have always done this regularly. This year we have developed a system that acknowledges the contribution that all our students make to our school through their wide and varied endeavours. We have called this scheme the Blues System. Under this system students can attain a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Diamond award in any or all of the four categories. The four categories are Academic, Cultural, Sports and Service. The level of their award is determined by the amount of years they have contributed to that area of the school. We have designed some badges that will be awarded to students.
Trophy for Most Improved in Lowest Grade
We would also like to kindly thank Milton Supervalue for their sponsorship this season. Thanks!
(absent from photo Lilly Browne)
Our group of students to be recognised will be awarded their badges in a special recognition assembly that will take place later this term.

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...
SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
We are nearly halfway through what has already been a very eventful term! Our students and staff continue to impress with their commitment to teaching and learning, and participation in wider school activities.
Cultural Competition
Our much anticipated Cultural Competition is next week, Thursday 22nd August. The event is always fabulous and celebrates who we are as a school community. This year we are also very excited to welcome some of the students from our local primary schools and early childhood centres to watch our event. The competition starts at 1pm in the school hall. All caregivers are welcome to attend. The event will not be live streamed this year but our Toko TV team will be creating a video that will be uploaded to our Youtube channel after the event.
Wet Lunchtimes
The PTA is a small but very dedicated group of parents who help our school community massively. At their last meeting they approved the purchase of some table tennis tables that will be available for our students to use on wet lunchtimes starting from September in the hall.
Course Selection Evening
Our Course Selection evening for NCEA courses will be on September 3rd. During this evening we will explain the requirements for NCEA and give details on the courses that we are going to offer in 2025. There will be the opportunity to speak to individual subject teachers about specific courses.
Student Attendance
NCEA External Assessments
As part of the changes to NCEA Level 1 some of the standards are now internal/external assessments. These standards require schools to engage students in learning and carry out assessment during term time, but the assessment is sent away to be marked externally. It is likely that most Year 11 students sitting NCEA Level 1 this year will be completing a number of these standards in different subjects before the end of the term.
Property Update
Our long awaited boiler is nearing completion. This project has taken slightly longer than we expected but it will be worth the wait to have a more sustainable energy source heating our kura reliably. It has also been awesome to see many of our senior students being given the opportunity to shadow and learn from the trades people on site.
Open Evening
Our Open Evening for prospective students will be on Monday 26th August starting at 6pm in our school hall. During the evening there will be a school tour and the opportunity to talk to our wonderful kaiako and current students. If you are unable to make the evening but would like the opportunity to come and have a look around our facilities please contact the office and we can arrange an appointment.

Every day counts towards your child’s learning at school. Attending school gives your child the best opportunity to realise their full potential and do well in life.
When should my child return to school?
As soon as they are unlikely to still be infectious and are well enough to join in with school activities. It is important for your child to reconnect with their peers and get back to learning. If your child cannot manage full days initially, eg due to tiredness, discuss this with your child’s school.
In general, a doctor’s certificate or clearance should not have to be provided for your child to go back to their school after being unwell. For more detailed information, we advise you to read the guidance prepared by Te

Round 2. Glenledi 12, Moneymore 7: St Mary’s 14, Milton Country Club 3

The Final saw Glenledi with two lives beat Moneymore 12-6. This week the champion pairs will be played.
The Rebus Club of Milton
At the July meeting, members of the committee spoke about their lives. They are a diverse lot with a mixture of long-time locals and some who have decided to make the local district their home. Their backgrounds include farming, business, shearing, contracting and teaching with heritages from Irish, Scottish, Welsh and English forebears. It was interesting to learn their stories and Rebus can be assured that the club is in good hands. Thanks to the Forum Café for hosting the meeting.
The next meeting is on Tuesday 20 August at 10 am in the RSA hall. Pauline Blomfield, founder of the K9 Medical Detection programme will speak about the training of dogs to detect cancer. Members of the public are welcome, and Rebus members are encouraged to bring along anyone who may be interested. (A small donation to K9MD would be appreciated). Committee please meet at 9.30 am.
Waihola Clarendon Women’s Institute
Our June meeting held in the Waihola Hall was well attended by members. Our speaker was a delegate to the Annual WI Conference and gave us a most detailed report of the conference. We concluded this meeting with soup and buns. For our July meeting members visited the Chinese Garden in Dunedin. All were very impressed with what we saw. It is a beautiful asset to Dunedin and deserves to be visited in Spring ( for the Cherry Blossoms ) , and in Autumn when the leaves change colour. We ended the visit with a typical Chinese meal of tea and dumplings or buns.
The motto given was of Chinese origin"It is difficult to lift a heavy object alone, it is easier to do it with others. Teamwork makes the dream work".
Milton Medical Centre News
Fee Increase
From 12 August we have had to increase the fees we charge patients. The owners of Milton Medical Centre, Southlink Health, have put out the following announcement regarding
As you may already be aware we have had to increase the fees we charge you, our patients. This is not a decision we have taken lightly, or that we wanted to make. Our updated fees are available on our website, and printed copies are available at the Practice.
We know many households are struggling with the increased cost of living and we understand the important role we play in providing equitable access to affordable, high-quality primary care.
Many of us in the primary health sector have warned the government on multiple occasions that if they didn’t increase funding levels, patient fees would have to increase to help cover our costs.
For the coming year, Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, has announced an increase in funding of only 4%. In the last year, our costs have risen more than this. In addition, health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora has directed that any funding shortfall is to be made up by patient fee increases, not government funding. We have to ensure we can continue to provide the care you need by ensuring our practice remains financially sustainable.
We understand the impact this could have on whanau. As a New Zealand organisation, we are committed to the sustainability of general practice in Aotearoa and we are driven by providing the best healthcare to our patients.
As with all interactions with us, we respect the patience and tolerance shown as we navigate this journey together.
Nga mihi nui
Your practice team.
There is no change to fees for Community Services card holders, but if anyone is struggling with paying for their medical costs, please contact the Practice Manager to have a confidential discussion about what options may be available to you.
Appointments & Triaging
Due to shortages of staff we are needing to triage patients based on need and even then we only have limited face-toface appointments available. If you, or a family member, is unwell and unable to access a face-to-face appointment, a nurse will talk you through the options available to you. This may mean you are advised to present at Dunedin Urgent Doctors or the Dunedin Hospital Emergency Department. We are fully aware of the difficulties and stress that patients are facing when they may be unable to get a face-to-face appointment. Please be kind to the staff members you are talking to.
Please know we, the Practice staff, are doing our very best to meet our patient’s needs. We do all care and are doing our best with limited resources.
Please feel free to contact me to discuss any concerns as we navigate these times together.
