Opportunity to Meet the Candidates
The Milton Rotary Club is once again serving the community and hosting a meet the candidates meeting in Milton. Rotary President Brendon Bearman invites everyone to come along to Coronation Hall on Tuesday the 2nd September at 7.00pm and hear the candidates present. There will be six candidates from the Milton Ward, two in the Bruce-Waihola Ward, two Mayoral candidates and four for the Molyneux Constituency of the Otago Regional Council.
“With the changes to Clutha District Ward boundaries and the number of Councilors on Council there is only one person to be elected to represent Milton and one in Bruce-Waihola Ward so this is an important opportunity to see all the candidates speak and hear them answer some questions”. The evening will conclude with supper.

Board of Trustees Election Results
We thank and acknowledge the following individuals who put their names forward to serve on the Tokomairiro High School Board of Trustees: Tony Mallon (returning), Kerri Clarke (returning), Tania Jacobs (returning), Vicki Ingram (new to board) and Rachael Russell (new to board). Our Staff Election results returned Jane McEntyre as representative. Because there were an equal number of nominations to vacancies, no vote was required.
Our 2024-25 Student Representative, Mr George Stark, addressed the student assembly Monday morning to brief us about the role and encourage others to put their name forward for the job. Nomination forms are now available.
Open Evening and Cooking Experience
We are very much looking forward to welcoming current Year 6 students and their families to our Open Evening Tuesday 19th August. We will be welcoming our manuhiri in the school hall at 6 pm, followed by a guided tour of our campus. The evening will finish off about 8pm in Te Kaiaka hub around 8 pm.
Year 6 students from local primary schools have this week begun to enjoy a little of what Tokomairiro High School has to offer! Mrs Bungard is overseeing lessons in our high school food tech classroom, where they are participating in hands-on learning experiences and picking up some practical cooking skills!
Proposed Changes to NCEA
The Ministry of Education has proposed significant changes to the NCEA system. The idea currently being discussed is replacing Levels 1, 2, and 3 with a new national qualification pathway starting from 2028. Importantly, students currently working towards NCEA at any level will not be affected by the proposals. All students are to remain focused, work hard, and aim for the best possible results in their current studies. Efforts this year will directly contribute to achieving the qualification you deserve!
If the proposals are adopted, our current Year 8 learners will be the first to experience the new qualification system when they reach Year 11 in 2028. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to learn more about the proposal and share feedback before consultation closes on 15 September at www.education.govt.nz/consultation-ncea .
The CAAs and Derived Grade (Mock Exam) Week
Co-requisite exams in the areas of Reading, Writing and Numeracy will be held at Tokomairiro High School in the first week of September. These online assessments will be sat under exam conditions at school. Passing a CAA awards 10 corequisite credits towards NCEA. Students do not need to achieve both literacy and numeracy at the same time they can build their success step by step. Teachers are preparing students in class, and we have set up extra help in each area with daily hour long tutorials run by Mrs Raewyn Devlin. Extra preparation at home will give students the best chance of success. Every bit of practice helps!
The same goes for students studying at Level 1, 2 or 3 who should now be hard at work preparing for their derived grade exams, which will occur the week of 25-29 August. These exams serve the important function of giving students an opportunity to practise for external exams and obviously ensure that they have good data available should they have to apply for a derived grade. Now is a great time for students to start some effective study habits. If they can achieve the following they will be well on the way to being successful in their exams: start early, organise your notes, make a revision timetable, set targets and deadlines and stick to them, reduce your notes, use visual and auditory techniques and test yourself.

Bible Reading for the Week
‘Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. ’ - James 1:4
Strengthening well-being: A school-wide focus.
This term, our Year 9 and 10 house groups have been exploring the ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ in mentoring sessions, with a particular focus on building positive connections. To put this into action, students recently took part in a lively “speed dating peers rotated around the room, asking each other random, funny questions ranging from power, what would it be?

News from the Trenches...
Word for the week is Peppercorn!!! If you know you know, I don't know why you would have it in terms of safety but if you were there on Sunday you'd understand.
But now onto proper subjects of discussion. If anyone is a keen knitter then people around NZ are knitting scarves and dropping them off at RSA to commemorate various wars to acknowledge contribution of NZ veterans. So we are currently lining up certain member is looking at modelling these. This last sentence has been revised from legal representative.
This coming Sunday we will be home open at 9am for a hearty cooked breakfast and AB test vs Argentina so put your name down to ensure that you get your share of Bacon & Eggs. Along with that the Pick The Score is ongoing as well. Getting up in total is our Joker Draw which at present rate of expansion will be fully loaded by end of August if not struck before hand. This will be highly sought after.
Final word is a direct quote from President Evan Jenkins who has given me free reign for artistic licence in upcoming columns so all I can say is Yeeeehhh Haaaaa!!!! Look out.

The Rebus Club of Milton
Ben Montgomery, a Milton local, was born in Sweden and is now a naturalised New Zealander. He has lived in Milton for 30 years and was the speaker at the June meeting.
He has knowledge of his family histor going back many centuries and it was incredible to learn of its beginning in the 10th century. His childhood was one of being a typical boy in a small southern town called Ekeby, enjoying the freedom life then offered. He played soccer and ice hockey as sports and remembers Christmas snow markets with glühwein and salted roasted chestnuts.
He volunteered to do security work in Israel for the Baha’i World Centre. This is a multicultural place where 60 or so people of all nationalities gather. He learned a great deal from all the different cultures. Part of his work was organising flats for those volunteering from overseas. During the Gulf War, people had to carry gas masks and houses made secure. It was a scary time with curfew at sunset. Ben met his Kiwi wife there and followed her to New Zealand, far from a war-torn area.
Ben was thanked by Lex Adam and given a gift.
At the July meeting, new members were welcomed, given badges and introduced themselves. A video of the 2016 Edinburgh Tattoo was then shown, with special interest being the NZ Army Band and the NZ Lochiel Ladies Marching team (thank you, Noel).
The next meeting is on Tuesday 19th August at 10am in the RSA hall. Committee please meet at 9:30am. The speaker is Alan Winter, a new member who has worked as a journalist and now lives in Waihola.
