Museum Visit for Art Class
Last week the Level 1 Art class visited Tūhura Otago Museum as part of their study on waka huia. Students took part in a tour, an information session and a drawing task. We were fortunate to see taoka from our region and learn more about the context in which these were carved, gifted and traded. We were able to learn more about how museum staff date taoka, how they use clues to work out where the taoka are from, and how they were used.
It was an awesome day and an incredible experience to see the taoka we've studied up close.
A big ngā mihi to Gerard, Ash and the staff at Tūhura who supported our students and shared their invaluable knowledge!
Squash a Popular Option
Our squash squad has been training on Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes for a couple of weeks so far. Last Friday, we had our first introductory tournament. The students had an hour of drills and then played some friendly matches.
Special thanks to Balclutha Squash for the venue and to Sam and Julie for volunteering their time and expertise. We are looking forward to our first 'real' tournament on the 21st of March.
Netball News
We are delighted to announce that Saffron Healey (year 11) has been selected for the U15 Te Waipounamu Māori Netball team for 2025! This is an incredible achievement, as competition for places was fierce.

Keeping Warm in Autumn
As we head into the second half of the term, there is still plenty to celebrate! Our students continue to take on new challenges and excel in various areas. Last week, our touch team made their debut at their first tournament, our Level 1 Art students explored creativity at Tūhura Otago Museum and our senior students had an informative visit from Otago Polytechnic.
Celebrating NCEA Success
The 2024 NCEA results are now confirmed and we are incredibly proud of our students' achievements! This week in assembly, we recognised those who attained endorsements at NCEA Levels 1 and 2 in 2024.
With new requirements introduced for NCEA Level 1 last year, students had to pass the literacy and numeracy co-requisites in addition to earning 60 credits. Our students rose to the challenge, with an impressive 87% of eligible students attaining NCEA Level 1 and over two-thirds of them securing an endorsement!
Our NCEA Level 2 and 3 results were equally outstanding, with 96% of Level 2 students and 93% of Level 3 students passing. We were also thrilled to see an increase in endorsements at both levels fantastic work by our ākonga and staff!

Exciting Finals Day Set for South Otago Cricket
Finals day in Milton promises to be a major event, featuring the Clutha Vets, South Otago 40-over Cricket final, followed by the annual South Otago Cricket Prizegiving later in the evening at the Toko Rugby Football Club from 7:00pm. South Otago cricketing legend and guest speaker Rick Cameron will reflect on the region’s cricketing success in its prime.
The finalists for the South Otago 40-over competition were decided after semi-finals played in challenging conditions over the weekend. For the third consecutive year, the Waihola Swans and Owaka Bandits will face off in the final. At the Milton Cricket Ground, Waihola secured their spot with a seven-wicket win over the Kaitangata Kings. Batting first, Kaitangata struggled to 140 all out in the final over, with a top -order collapse leaving them at 29/4 early on. Mark Shepherd (59) and Kane Benington (20) provided some resistance, but tight bowling from Ashley Manson and Craig Gordon (both taking three wickets) kept them in check. Waihola also faced early setbacks in their chase but were steadied by Dylan Bungard (59*) and Shannon Young (21*), whose unbeaten 72-run partnership guided them home.
Owaka overcame the Milton King Crabs in Owaka, also by seven wickets. Milton managed 136, thanks to key contributions from Corey Bradley (31) and Dylan Greer (24), but Jamie Shaw (3/22) and Jeremy Gray (3/26) led the way with the ball for Owaka. The Bandits’ chase was built on a strong 81-run opening stand between Gordon Edwards (39) and Gray (34), before Jethro Melville (26) and Quentin Gare finished the job in the 33rd over. With both finals and a prizegiving set to cap off the season, South Otago cricket fans are in for a big weekend of action and celebration capping off a great sporting weekend in Milton, leading into Sunday’s Toko Rugby Pre-Season and Junior Fun Day Celebration!

Bible Reading for the Week
“He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. ” - Psalms 25:9
The Rebus Club of Milton

Sometimes it takes just one person to start the ball rolling. In this case it is Joyce Beck, the February speaker from Kaitangata. She grew up and has spent most of her life there, being active in the Presbyterian church, Brownies and Guides and as Principal of Kaitangata school for many years. An important project she is involved with is the purchase of land and building of affordable houses to encourage new residents. This has resulted in families coming to live there. Rugby, golf, daycare and the school roll have benefited. In addition, a New Community Centre has been added on to the Worship Centre, the local pool is being upgraded, and new businesses have started up. Outdoor pursuits like the BMX track, mountain bike trails and the boat ramp improvements for fishermen are all adding to the attractions in the town. Volunteers are always willing to help when asked making the required jobs so much easier and quicker. Joyce praised the efforts of those who are always quick to offer. Efforts have been made to add information on boards to let people know about the history of the area. There is an active Promotions Group already planning for this year.
Joyce left members in admiration for all the work she and others have been involved in. It shows how a community working together can achieve so much. She was thanked by Lex Adam and given a gift.
The next meeting and AGM are on Tuesday March 18 at 10 am in the RSA Hall. Committee please meet at 9.30am. Following the meeting, members will be taken to visit Julie Moroney’s garden in Kaitangata followed by fish and chips for lunch.
News from the Trenches...
Greetings as we are only a few days away from one of our 2025 highlights with the winners of our World Famous Spud Dig being announced this coming Saturday. The festivities will commence at 2pm with all spuds being collected earlier. Some growers are claimed they need a forklift to carry them, so will see how it goes. There will also be fun games, music and much more so this will be a massive success.
At the end of the month we will be getting a visit from the Patriots Motor Cycle Club who do awesome charity work. They will be calling into Milton RSA as final stop on their ride.
Also upcoming not this Friday but hopefully next Friday we will be holding a special presentation associated with our hugely successful Darts Competition. So if you were involved, you need to be there on that night. We have some surprises lined up.
Also congratulations to Ronnie Howie who successfully drew out the correct card for the joker. Also due to large numbers on our raffles Thursday night, the membership draw has been won 3 weeks in a row so just shows constantly more winners on a regular basis.
Finally we had a member who was in the Outram area, and carefully placed his cellphone on the roof of the car while completing their tasks. Yes you guessed what happened next. It wasn't there when they arrived back to Milton funnily enough!!!

Toko Rugby Report
Toko took on Green Island in second pre season game of 2025 for the highly regarded Kingston Beer Williams Trophy which both sides wanted to come out victorious.
Toko opened the scoring with a try to young block busting centre Teimana Rewita before Big Dawg Josh Beer Williams scoring for Green Island as he was destined to do. Green Island then took control and ran out comfortable winners 40-7 at full time. Toko hung on there resolutely and got through a mountain of tackling practice which will set them up for the season.
On Wednesday night at 6pm there will be people available at club rooms to help those people register for the 125th anniversary so this is your last chance.
Next Sunday from 11am there will be a junior coaching session with Otago Players Sam Fischlii and Keely Hill. There will be a BBQ and lolly scramble before Toko Seniors play at 1pm, and Toko Premiers at 3pm to take on Taieri for Ken Bloxham trophy. This will be an awesome event for the whole family.
