Foodbank Donation Part of

As part of a health promotion unit, our year 9 and 10 Health class have been looking into what healthy food is, along with advertising and inflation. Our librarian Greig had the idea that we should organise a food bank drive in response to our in

Our students and whānau have been extremely generous, and for this we thank you! It has shown our students that if they identify a community need, they can pursue a project and be well supported in endeavours.

Student Attendance

Every day counts towards your child’ learning at school. Attending school gives your child the best opportunity to realise their full potential and do well in life.

Parents and caregiver expectations

Cemetery Visit Insightful

In Term 2, the Year 9 and 10 Social Studies students have been learning about how data from cemeteries can provide insights into local history and societal trends. They travelled to the historic Fairfax Cemetery last week, and working in pairs, wrote down information taken from headstones including dates of birth, dates of death, ages, and names, as well as other information. Back at school, this data will be analysed for student assessment.

Uniform Reminder

Now that we are starting to feel the effects of winter weather, it is time to remind students of the uniform requirements. Softshell jackets are still able to be worn, or the new longer, waterproof jacket which is available from NZ Uniforms. Thermal tops are able to be worn under the polo tee shirts or checked shirts. These are to be black or navy. Hoodies and other non–uniform items are not acceptable.

Parents are legally required to enrol their children and make sure they attend school every day.

Parents play a big role in helping their children do well in school. You can do this by making sure your child goes to school every day and letting the school know if they're sick. If your child is unable to attend school you must let the school know the reason why.

Family holidays or taking time off for recreational activities are not acceptable reasons for being absent. You are responsible for letting the school know if your children are moving schools and you need to make sure you enrol your children in their next school right away.

Students wearing skirts are allowed to wear navy stockings. There are some items of second hand uniform and new uniform pieces available at the school office, or you can join the Tokomairiro High Second Hand uniform page on Facebook by going to https://www.facebook.com/groups/1056602061990214. For any questions about uniform, please talk to your child’s dean.

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.

As we head into the last few weeks of our first semester, I am aware that many of our students will have pressing deadlines for assessments. For most assessments students will be able to continue to work on them or prepare for them at home. At school we also have the Ako club which is a space available at lunchtimes during the week where students can work on assessments or access additional help to complete

Values Recognitions Top Earners

Since the beginning of the second term at the end of April, teachers have awarded a remarkable 1339 Values Recognitions points in class. Year 11 leads the way on 279, Year 8s are not far behind on 227, and Year 7 are breathing down their necks on 225.

At assembly on Monday 10 June, the following students were recognised as our top Values Recognitions earners:

Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day was acknowledged by most schools and workplaces around the country on Friday 17th May. However, this was the day where a significant number of our students participated in the East Otago High School sports exchange so we decided to postpone our event. We are going to be acknowledging Pink Shirt Day on Friday 21st June. There will be a pink themed mufti day (gold coin donation) and fun events throughout the day for students to get involved in. All money raised will be donated to the Mental Health Foundation.

BYOD

We have made the decision that starting in 2025 that we will be moving towards a BYOD model for student devices in school. For 2025 Year 7 and 8 students will still have a chromebook that is for their use at school, but for all students in Years 9 to 13 we are strongly recommending that they bring their own device.

There will be a limited supply of chromebooks available for students in Years 9 to 13 to access during the day. Our recommended devices are listed on our website along with a link to Noel Leeming who will be our preferred supplier and will have a record of our requirements and also a copy of the BYOD Agreement.

Waihola Clarendon Women’s Institute

Our May meeting had a good attendance with one new member coming along and apologies from two members. Our speaker was Juanita Willems, her driver and her guide Dog Arnie. Juanita is blind but has been with the Foster Care Organisation for many years. She spoke on getting clothes and other items for children - up to the age of 19who have to go into Foster Care but usually only have the clothes they are dressed in. The members will bring PJ`s to our June meeting, plus we had a collection and were able to give Juanita a donation. This was going to be spent on shampoo before Juanita got back to her office.

The motto given was an Irish one - "there are good ships, and wood chips and ships that sail the seas, but the best ships are friendships, and may that always be"

Our roll call was a recipe that was your mothers favourite, and these included biscuits, puddings and cakes.

Remits for the WI AGM in Wellington were discussed and we look forward to hearing about the AGM at our June meeting. Members were reminded our June meeting will be held in the Hall and that four members of the committee will provide soup and buns at this meeting.

School Property Upgrade

In December 2021, the Ministry of Education reviewed Tokomairiro High School's 10-Year Agreement (10YA) programme. This is where the Ministry identifies areas in the school requiring upgrades and allocates a budget for these improvements.

After many delays it became unlikely that all budgeted projects would be completed. In February and March this year, consultants, school representatives, designers and architects met to determine a priority list for the available budget and finalise details. It was decided to ensure the work areas are waterproof and warm for students and staff. The last work on the science labs was completed in 1996, and most of the doors and windows are original. If the budget permits, the following will be completed:

• New colour steel roof on the entire B Block

• New spouting on B & D blocks

• New double-glazed windows and doors for the three science labs

• New electrical wiring in the science area

• Upgraded heating in the science labs

• Upgraded gas fittings

• New LED lighting in the science area

• New carpet in the C Block classrooms and library

By April, draft drawings were received for approval before going out for tender, leading to more meetings, phone calls, and minor alterations before tenders were issued on 9th May.

Recently, contractors visited the areas, taking measurements, and gathering information for their tenders, which closed on 6th June. Tenders will be reviewed by the tender evaluators before being presented to the school Board for approval and awarding of the successful tender, with work starting towards the end of the year depending on school activities.

2024 will be a very busy year for Tokomairiro High School. Once all upgrades are finished, students and staff will have an even warmer and better-equipped environment for learning and teaching in 2025 and beyond.

of the Week:

News from the Trenches...

WOW what a week!!!! Huge night last Friday with a quiz night in support of Bruce Community Pool project with 24 teams crammed into the RSA for a fun filled night which was hugely successful in raising almost $2000 so big thanks to the Milton community for supporting this night. Massive thanks to Leanne and Boo for all the hard work to ensure this was a great success. As an added bonus we still have some Anzac Day cookies for sale, $20 for 25 biscuits, these won't be around long so get in quick. I've sampled them myself and thoroughly recommend them.

Our Sports Tipping Comp is starting to heat up with not many weeks left. Pressure is starting to tell on the leaders as they start to buckle. I think there are a pack of sharks closing rapidly.

Finally I have a story about ice cream. A couple went for a romantic drive to Kaitangata recently when they felt like an ice cream. With shop not having pay wave, female partner asked male partner for PIN no, I think it's this number. Ummm no it's not as she came out of shop. Leave it to me he said, determined to get ice cream, he came out 20 seconds later unable to recall pin code. Bitterly disappointed at not having an ice cream they drove off and 10 mins later, he suddenly realised he had cash in his wallet!!!!!

Don't be like him and come down to the RSA.

Toko Rugby Report

On Saturday the Toko Premiers travelled to Lawrence in beautiful sunny conditions that were conducive to running footy which both teams took advantage of.

Lawrence opened the scoring before Toko hit the afterburners, with some fantastic backline movement which resulted in four first half tries to Shelford Meads, Morgan Glaister, Tim Smaill and George Lowery. This gave Toko a handy 24-12 halftime lead. Lawrence got a stir up at halftime and they responded with three quick fire tries to take a 3124 lead. The second half was full of thrust and counter thrust with both teams playing outstanding open rugby. Lawrence held a 43-31 seemingly strong lead before Toko bounced back though Dejay Kane and Jared Hayes being the hero of the day with a 80m interception in the last minute of the match to give Toko a massive 45-43 victory. For Toko, Jared Hayes was the star of the show closely followed by Lockie Finch, Dejay Kane and Captain Inspiration Tim Smaill. Toko Premiers may have been down a few troops but their never say die attitude got them over the finish line.

To cap off a great day for Toko Rugby the Senior Bs got their first victory of the season with a awesome 22-17 victory over Dunedin. Bradley Frost sprinted away with the winning try.

Next week Toko Premiers take on West Taieri at home so come along and support these boys.

Rebus Club of Milton

What an inspiration our May speaker was. Julie Woods, aka that blind woman, kept us all entertained and amazed at what she has achieved since she was declared officially blind. She was accompanied by her driver, Margaret Jackson, whose mother was also blind. To start with, Julie taught us how to greet a blind person. Say hello (name), then your name and where you come from.

Julie found herself blind at the age of 31, married and with two children. Instead of worrying about what she couldn’t do, she asked for help and learned what she could do. Blind Low Vision NZ taught her many skills and through them she met other blind people and was astounded at their abilities. Her new mantra became WHY NOT! She put 20 questions to the listening members who were encouraged to answer WHY NOT. Attitude is everything and she certainly shows it. Braille was important and she is now challenging herself to write one million names in Braille. She has travelled to Paris to celebrate Louis Braille’s 200th birthday, seen the seven new Wonders of the World, with now husband Ron Esplin, refereed 3 games of nude touch rugby, and is a speaker and ambassador for Blind Low Vision. What a CV!

Julie was thanked by Jeanne Barclay and given a donation for Blind Low Vision NZ.

The next meeting is on Tuesday June 18th at 10 am in the RSA hall. Committee please meet at 9.30 am. The speaker is Stacey Adam. Stacey grew up in Milton, joined the Airforce and has attended the Invictus Games. Please come along to this open meeting if you are keen to hear Stacey speak.
