The Senior A Netball Team travelled to Christchurch on Sunday 1st September to prepare for four days of netball. We kicked off the tournament well with a win in the first game. The girls felt elated having a win under their belt. The games were spread out during the day meaning that we could return to our accommodation to rest and eat some lunch.
We then had some tough and close games including a game against the team that ended up winning the grade. A new pool was made and we did well in this round, winning all our games including having to play against some teams that we usually face in Dunedin.
Finals day brought a win followed by another close game bringing it to 5 wins out of 8 games for the tournament. The girls worked hard in all their games and kept on going even when it got tough. Their stamina is to be admired along with their good sportsmanship.
In between games we had fun visiting New Brighton Pier, the gardens light show, Riccarton Mall and the swimming pool. We celebrated the week with a meal out on Thursday night. It was a great tournament for Tokomairiro and we are already looking forward to next year!

The Rebus Club of Milton
Wow, what a great response to the open invitation to join Rebus members for this meeting. A big thank you to the Balclutha Ladies’ Focus group, Milton Elder Care and other members of the public who turned up to learn about the work of the Canine Medical Detection (K9MD) team, founded by Pauline Blomfield. Thanks to your generosity, a $400 donation was made to K9MD.
Pauline describes herself as a “Crazy Dog Lady” who had the idea of training dogs to use their incredible sense of smell to detect cancer in human urine. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of cancer in the world, so this could become another tool for the medical fraternity to use in early diagnosis. After all, dogs smell out unwanted goods, unexploded items and drugs etc, police dogs track offenders, and diabetics and blind people use dogs to keep them safe. Different breeds of dog have a genetic predisposition for certain jobs. Where humans use email, dogs use pmail! Forty percent of their brain composition is for smell, with each nostril independent!
When old enough, a K9MD dog’s day starts at “school” at Invermay where there are 5 laboratories and 3 training rooms and hopefully soon a hydrotherapy tank. At night they return to foster homes. Regulations are paramount for the integrity of testing. Scientific studies are rigorously examined to an exceptionally high standard and all data is recorded. Privacy is a key concern, and all samples have a barcode, not name. At the moment, there are three dogs trained to detect bowel cancer, three for prostate cancer and two for ovarian cancer. The cost to train one dog is $80,000. With no government funding, it is a never-ending challenge to raise funds.
Pauline is a passionate advocate for this work and her presentation showed it. She was thanked by Lex Adam and given a gift.
The next meeting is on Tuesday 17th September at 10 am at the RSA hall. Local Mick Cullen is the speaker to tell us about his life.
Committee please meet at 9.30 am.
Tuesday Sing
Every fourth Tuesday a group of us get together at the Presbyterian Church Hall around 7.00 pm to sing. We are planning to do two concerts for Elder Care and Ashlea Grove folk around November. The songs are based around Show tunes. We are also planning on doing our Christmas Carolling around town in the week leading up to Christmas.
Keen? Then come along this Tuesday, 24th September. We would love to have some more voices join us.

News from the Trenches...
This week column I'd like to start off on a solemn note with the passing of Elaine Anderson who was a regular attendee of our Thursday night raffles with always a glint in her eye. Kua Haere ia ke tona moenga roa, she has gone to her eternal rest.
On Wednesday 18th September at 7pm there is a meeting with the Remberance Army who are a group that tidies up ex soldiers graves and are looking at setting up a group on our area. This is an excellent idea and I call on all those interested in assisting to come along. All welcome. Our Pick the Score jackpot hasn't been struck and is sitting at over $400 with next game AB vs Australia on 21st September -so who will win that?? Also enter your name for our Corporate Box hospitality where you are looked after royally with free refreshments.
The score sheets on our NPC comp will be covered up very shortly with a couple of big hitters currently leading however there are a few cunning entrants holding off playing their joker to make their move. Not many clear rounds reflects either comp is hard to pick or entrants are just thick. Possibly a combo.
Ron Howie was the lucky recipient of our Membership Draw last week so goes back to $100.
We all generally agree that Ian Flett is a good bugger who always willing to help anyone anytime. I've got a couple of examples with the first being him as a chaperone to a couple of our more elderly members wait baiting to ensure they don't go for a swim which they have been known to previously. Second occasion he was involved in helping moving a large round trampoline from one place to another but unfortunately the trailer used wasn't big enough for the trampoline. Rumour is he was seen holding on for dear life bouncing along!!! Milton has plenty of these good buggers around. I may have to give Fletty a wide berth for a while as he may want to have a chat. I may have to add his name to the list that forbids me to mention him. That list has at least one name already there -Private Spike Pike
