Ngā mihi nui to AJ Nixon (Tuakana) and Millanian Potae (Teina) for being Tokomairiro High School's Mana Pounamu recipients in 2024! Your achievements and leadership are truly inspiring. Koia kei a kōrua!
This annual kaupapa celebrates the outstanding accomplishments of rakatahi Māori from 28 secondary schools across the region and is a Kāi Tahu initiative co-hosted by Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka - University of Otago. We are incredibly proud of AJ and Millanian for representing Tokomairiro High School with such mana and excellence.
Otago’s Youngest Referee
Murphy Lister created history on Saturday, when he became Otago’s youngest referee to take charge of a Premier Men’s Rugby Game.
"Ko te pae tawhiti, whāia kia tata; ko te pae tata, whakamaua kia tīna" Seek out distant horizons and cherish those you attain.
At just 17 years old, the Year 13 pupil at Tokomairiro High School, made his Prem Debut in a Toko vs Clinton match. Murphy took up rugby refereeing in 2021 and has been working his way up through the ranks. This year he has taken control of a variety of games including Prem Colts, Champ Colts and 1st XV and has been travelling between Metro (Dunedin) and South Otago. Every Saturday is a big day for Murphy and sees him reffing or being assistant referee in anywhere from 1 to 3 games of the code.
His big day was made even more unique as one of his assistant referees was his father, Craig, who has also taken up the whistle in the last year.
Murphy would like to thank Colin Calteaux and Wayne Carruthers for their coaching, knowledge and support on his journey into reffing.
Murphy also shared the big day with Toko legend Liam Kingma, who notched up 100 games for Toko. Liam puts in a huge amount of work behind the scenes for Toko, is an all round great guy, a fantastic role model for our young players
Student Attendance
Every day counts towards your child’s learning at school. Attending school gives your child the best opportunity to realise their full potential and do well in life.
Tips for parents
Talk to your children about why school is important, be positive about school and help them build good habits.
Schools can help too. Schools are expected to create a welcoming environment and have clear rules about attendance. Many schools support local activities that promote going to school.
We know that families sometimes have problems, and that can make it hard to focus on school. But there’s help available.
Schools and parents should work in partnership to support children to attend school. If your child is reluctant to go to school, talk to your school.

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...
SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
We are now halfway through our 2024 school year, and as staff and students start their well-earned break from school, I can feel a sense of accomplishment and anticipation for the rest of the year. This pause provides us with a valuable opportunity to recharge, reflect on the progress we've made, and prepare for the exciting challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Term two, just like term one, was a busy term for our kura with winter sports, annual sports exchanges, NCEA assessments, and a plethora of other events. But term two has not just been busy; it has been a very successful term for our students in terms of their sporting achievements as well as their academic successes.
From the triumphs on the sports field to the outstanding results in NCEA assessments, our students have shown remarkable dedication and resilience. The winter sports season saw our teams competing with passion and sportsmanship, achieving impressive victories and demonstrating the values of teamwork and perseverance. Academically, our students have continued to excel, with many achieving high grades and meeting their learning goals. The dedication of our teachers and the support of our whānau have been crucial in these successes, fostering an environment where our students can thrive.
As we move into the second half of the year, I look forward to seeing this momentum continue to gather pace and together, we will continue to strive for excellence and make the most of every learning opportunity.

Mana Pounamu Awards
Last Thursday I had the privilege of attending the 24th Mana Pounamu Awards which recognise and celebrate the achievement of rakatahi Māori across Otago Secondary Schools. This year our recipients were two outstanding students in our kura, Millanian Potae and AJ Nixon. I along with the rest of our school could not be prouder of these two tauira and greatly value the amazing contribution that they both make on a daily basis to help our kura be a happy and successful place to be.
House Point Updates
Our house system has been an integral part of fostering school spirit and healthy competition for many years. Last term house points have been awarded across various categories, contributing to a vibrant and engaging school culture.
Att the mid way point of the 2024 Tokomairiro House Competition that Reid is in the lead closely followed by Ayson then Ross and Malcolm.
Winter Uniform
As we head into the coldest part of the year we want to ensure that all of our students are warm at school but also are in the correct uniform. Therefore, if you are purchasing winter uniform items over the break please remember that hoodies are not permissible. Students are able to wear a plain black or navy jacket and we also have two styles of jacket available through NZ Uniforms.

Hockey Still Fun in the Rain
Last Monday the Toko Wahine 1st XI hockey team played at the Alexander MacMillan Hockey Centre in Dunedin. We played in the pouring rain, and lost 5-3 to OGHS Sapphires, but the girls left with a smile on their face. The girls applied a ton of pressure and played really well as a team.

Celebrating Matariki
On the last Friday of Term 2 Homeroom celebrated their Matariki learning with a shared kai. The children showed their presentations that they had created with their peers. We had stop go animations, blookets, kahoots, poems and art. It was a great end to the term!
News from Digitech
In Term Two students have taken a keen interest in the inner workings of a computer - learning what the different components do and how they work together. Some students are even getting hands on with building a computer! Meanwhile some of the senior students have been busy planning and building websites.
While the students in digital technologies have been working on their next assessments the University of Otago has kindly donated a set of computers and associated peripherals to the school. This has led to students helping Mr Todd with the clearing out and reinstallation of devices, ready to be used. Thanks again to the University of Otago for giving these new machines and Tokomairiro looks forward to using them to help students understand what makes a computer tick!

Third Place for Toko Tigers
On June 3rd, the Toko Tigers took part in a Football Tournament at the Edgar Centre. They played extremely well, showing some fancy footwork and great goalie work, resulting in 3rd place in their division. More importantly, they were wonderful examples of our school values, showing kindness and empathy. Go Toko Tigers!

Year of Achievement Commemorated
In a recent gathering at the Toko Rugby Club Rooms, the Milton Lions celebrated their accomplishments for the year spanning July
The event featured a tasty meal and an insightful address from Moira White, the Curator of Humanities at Otago Museum. It served as a moment to express gratitude to departing and incoming office bearers and committee members. We are excited to welcome Niamh McElrea (left) as the next president, confident that she will lead the
Throughout the past year, the Milton Lions have continued to flourish, welcoming seven new members and increasing our total membership to 33 individuals. We are always open to new members and extend an invitation to those interested in learning more about the Lions or
Our club has been actively engaged in a variety of successful events, such as the Lions ANZAC Golf Tournament, the Milton Gutbuster and Family Trail Ride, the Toko A&P Show where we not only sold food but provided free health checks, and various catering initiatives within our community. These endeavors have enabled us to extend our support to diverse local, national, and international causes. We take pride in our contributions to numerous charitable organizations, including Tokomairiro Kyokushin Karate Club for safety equipment, Toko Junior Netball Club for uniform enhancements, Youthline, the Neurological Foundation, local school projects in Milton, Blessed Box for newborn family support, Project Bruce and the Pataka Kai Sharing Pantry, the Bruce Community Swimming Pool, the South Otago Heritage Society for their toilet block project, and various others.
In addition to our charitable contributions, the Milton Lions are actively involved in local projects. This year, we helped upgrade the Taylor Park fence, organised a bi-annual Food Bank Drive, conducted firewood sales and donations through the Community Hub, and continued to stock the ever-busy manure stall.
The Milton Lions Club offers more than just community service; it provides a platform for members to forge new connections, participate in pleasant conversations, gather for monthly meals, and share laughter together. Members can partake in a range of activities such as the annual games night with the Fire Brigade, social events like Ten Pin Bowling, quiz nights, and dining experiences. Rugby Report
On Saturday in cold wintery conditions Toko took on Clinton in the final round robin match for this season.
Toko started off brightly with a keenness to play expansive rugby at every opportunity and were rewarded with two early tries to Scott Anderson and Toby Greene to take out an early 12-0 lead. Toko completely dominated both territory and possession but were let down by final execution which hampered their aim of scoring plenty of points. Clinton got on the board with a try for halftime score 12-5 Toko. Toko scored early in the second half through a try to McLeod Glaister with Clinton under the pump to stay in touch at 19-5. Clinton bounced back with two late tries including one on full-time but the conversion just missed and Toko let out a huge sigh of relief with a narrow 19 -7 victory. Congratulations to Liam Kingma who brought up 100 games for Toko and the performance by the rest of the team showed the high level of regard he is held in. Also congrats to Murphy Lister for reffing his first Premier match.
Toko Prize giving will be held on Saturday 27th July with dinner included. Contact the club in order to purchase tickets for this excellent night.
Next week Toko Premiers travel to Lawrence for semi final of bottom four so get along to support the boys.

The Rebus Club of Milton
At the June meeting we were fortunate to have Stacey Adam speak to us. Stacey grew up in Milton and in 2003 joined the RNZAF to train as a medic. Her intention was to stay for five years but 21 years later she is still there, now working remotely from Milton. Training to be a medic included primary health care and emergency medicine, this work entailed being responsible for up to 120 people on exercises or on operations overseas. She also trained in aeromedical evacuation with Hercules planes.
Stacey deployed to Afghanistan with the NZ Army as a patrol medic. Being Airforce and female she felt like she had to prove herself. However being well acquainted with firing a gun gained respect for her. She described the country as a challenging environment, low sanitation and a lot of sickness. Mines and IEDs were a real problem causing a lot of anxiety amongst some of the soldiers and now seeing the effects of PTSD amongst Afghanistan Veterans.
Stacey has had a varied career. She has trained in Search and Rescue with airforce helicopters, completed an exchange in the UK undertaking a variety of jobs including spending some time in a rehab centre for injured and wounded military personnel. Here she got to witness the full circle of people on their rehab journey. There was wide array of issues from gunshot wounds, traumatic brain injuries, traumatic amputations and blast injuries.
A highlight was escorting WWII veterans to the Battle of Monte Casino commemorations; most in their 80s and 90s. Lots of stories were shared with laughter and tears.
Back in NZ, with a partner and two young children, Stacey had to face surgery for a brain tumour. Six years later she still feels the effects. Her life changed dramatically, but with involvement with the Invictus Games as a competitor and determination she competed in Invictus Games Dusseldorf 2023, winning two silver medals. She now volunteers for the Invictus Games Foundation and uses her own experience to help others along their journey of rehabilitation.
Stacey was thanked by Lester Clark and given a gift of fruit. The next meeting is on Tuesday July 16th at the Forum café. (Please note the change of venue). Committee please meet at 9.30 and the General meeting at 10 am. No speaker this time but you may find out a little more about the committee members!
Milton Sub Association Indoor Bowls
The first game for the second round cup was played on Tuesday night. Both Milton Country Club and St Mary’s took out the first games when St Mary’s beat Moneymore 13-2, 9-8 and 13-3 while Moneymore’s win was 13-4. Milton Country Club trounced Glenledi winning 3 of the 4 games. Country Clubs wins were 11-4, 8-2 and 7-4. Glenledi’s close win was 6-5. Overall both St Mary’s and Milton Country Club won 6-2.
The South Otago Zone winners went to Alexandra at the weekend to play Southland, Otago and Central. Milton’s only participant was Peter Grant who was in the N.Z. Mixed Fours with Christine King and David and Colleen Fenton.
News from the Trenches...
FACTS, give me FACTS!!! This has been the catch phrase this week as demanded by members on Sunday. Now this column prides itself on nothing but the facts as always.
On Saturday night we had an awesome night with the AB test. The Corporate Viewing Box was extremely popular and as a result Sam Powick is this week's lucky recipient to be waited on. So get along to have a chance to win next time. We only have two weeks left for our World Famous Sporting Comp and remember this pressure is only for tyres!!! So will be interesting to see if there are any flat tyres out there. The food has been confirmed as an awesome hangi type tucker which people are looking forward to. Make sure you are there for the special presentation that night. It will be emotional.
So come along to the RSA where this week I've heard all range of topics discussed from UK Politics to Medical Performance pills. Stay warm people.
