Don Summerville revitalization ready for tenants All units are now move-in ready Toronto Community Housing (TCHC)’s Don Summerville revitalization is ready to welcome tenants to their new, move-in ready homes. TCHC, the City of Toronto, and the site’s developer partner Context, opened the community with a ribbon cutting celebration on October 1.

The 3.3-acre site used to be home to 120 families in two apartment buildings.

Context and TCHC made plans to revitalize the area. These plans included adding additional housing to the site, like market rentals and condos. Within the new rental building, the City of Toronto and the Federal government joined forces to add new affordable and co-operative units.

The market rent building will be managed

by RioCan.

Danforth Member of Parliament Julie Dabrusin. TCHC President and Chief Executive Officer Sean Baird, Howard Cohen from Context, and Jonathan Gitlin from RioCan also joined the celebration.

“I’m excited to welcome Toronto Community Housing tenants back into Don Summerville, as well as the new market rental tenants and condo owners that they’ll live alongside,” said Sean. “As a result of this revitalization, TCHC and the City have been able to create more than six times more homes on this site than what originally existed.”

A friendship forged on the court

Bleecker Street documentary explores family, brotherhood, and basketball Sitting in the screening room at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) with the central cast, director, and producer of King’s Court, one is struck by the passion they display for their film. It is a short documentary about two youth who grew up together on Bleecker Street in the neighbourhood of St. James Town.

Stephen (or “SK”) come of age both on and off the basketball courts that have been a fixture there for decades. The film has enjoyed a lot of success. It ran at Hot Docs and then at the Regent Park Film Festival.

Serve, a director who also grew up on Bleecker, was frank when he talked about the realities of getting it made.

Thankfully, Kate saw the film for what it was and helped give it the green light.

She also enjoyed the process of helping to grow the idea and piece the film

together. “It’s this really great time where we get to experiment and figure out the approach,” she said. “For the first three days of shooting, we followed Marley and SK around with a camera as they walked around the neighbourhood talking to each other, with hardly any prompting. When we reviewed the footage later, it was startling to see how easily they spoke of these difficult topics, big ideas, and vulnerable moments. It almost felt like it was scripted.”

TCHC also helped when the crew needed permission to film in certain locations. “One of the key spots for us was shooting on that basketball court, Nike Court, because this was where these guys spent so much time,” Kate continued. “But we also recognized that there are some challenges in taking a court away from the community for a period of time.” That’s when they contacted Jerome Leach. Jerome was the Community Services Coordinator at the time, who helped remove those barriers.

“He just smoothed that road for us and made everything happen,” said Kate. “He was so excited to hear about the film and wanted to do whatever he could to make it happen. From there, we built this really great relationship with folks from TCHC.” King’s Court is more than a basketball film, exploring complex issues shared by two friends. They clearly love their neighbourhood but aren’t shy about discussing the challenges they’ve faced growing up there. “You’re talking about life, you know, the best and worst types of things,” said Marley. “Brotherhood is embraced in our neighbourhood, but it’s through the struggle. Stuff like

basketball is what ties that struggle and that success all in together.”

“You don’t always need conflict, struggle and hate to fuel a meaningful conversation.”

It’s clear when watching the movie that basketball is the common ground where youth in the neighbourhood work out their issues with life (and even with each other). It’s on the court where moments of genuine tenderness emerge, which is what Serve was trying to show.

“I think so much of our culture craves trauma in film for some reason, and I think sometimes we don’t give softness and love a chance to take centre stage,” he said. “I think this film is proof that you don’t always need conflict and struggle to fuel a meaningful conversation.”

SK spent six months in the United States on a basketball scholarship, and really likes the film’s approach. “As much as this film was for me and my family, I also wanted to show youth that they can succeed too,” he said. “The way this film was shot aligns with that, because the youth that watch it get inspired and understand that there are people that go through the same things they do. I want them to know that no matter the toughness and the adversity you deal with, there’s always hope, and you can always be bigger than your environment.

You don’t have to just succumb to what your environment is telling you to become.”

Featuring a dinner buffet, photo booth, speeches, awards, and a dance floor, the evening was a celebration of all who made the 2025 program possible. Tenant youth between the ages of 14 to 18 from communities across the city were invited.

Over the past few years, Kareem has designed and facilitated community engagement strategies focused on mental health, violence prevention, and youth empowerment.

One of the highlights of the evening was hearing Kareem South speak. He is a former National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 basketball player, professional athlete, and devoted community mental health advocate.

Kareem is the founder of Own Your Impact, a foundation that uses basketball as a bridge to create safe spaces for dialogue, healing, and leadership development.

Through this work, he helps young people share their stories, build strength, and create change.

Winter fire safety tips The Ontario Fire Code prohibits tampering with smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm devices. These devices are installed in each unit and are not connected to the building’s fire alarm system. If you disable a smoke/CO alarm, you are at risk of not being notified if there is a fire or CO leak in your unit. This would put you, your family,and your neighbours in danger. Test your smoke/CO alarm monthly to make sure that it functions properly. If there is an issue with the device, tell your superintendent or call the Client Care Centre at 416-981-5500.

The Ontario Fire Code prohibits flammable items in hallways of apartments, like doormats, door decorations, wreaths, or flowers. In the case of a fire, these items would intensify the flames, making it more difficult to evacuate the building. Keep doormats, shoes, and decorations inside your unit.

Lithium-ion battery explosions are unpredictable and volatile. Overcharging batteries and using extension cords produces heat that can lead to a fire. Only use the manufacturer’s charging cables, plug directly into an outlet, and monitor until charging is complete.

Dr. Vidal Chavannes brings more than two decades of leadership experience in public safety and education. Before joining TCHC, he served as Director of Strategy, Research & Organizational Performance at the Durham Regional Police Service.

Proper use of E-Devices and lithium-ion batteries

Let’s keep our homes and communities safe from battery fires and hazards Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) recognizes the growing importance of electric mobility devices, or E-Devices, in everyday life. Tenants and staff use them to go to work, access essential services, or navigate areas with limited public transit.

TCHC is committed to making sure they are used safely and accessibly across our properties. Here are some tips and best practices you can follow to safely and responsibly use and charge your E-Devices and lithium-ion batteries.

• Safe devices: Use only unmodified e-bikes, electric motor scooters, and mobility aids.

They cannot be gas-powered.

• Safe use: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and stop using right away if you notice heat, smell, leaks, or noise. Do not ride your E-Device in the building, including hallways or other common areas. Only one E-Device is permitted inside the elevator.

• Safe charging: Plug directly into a wall outlet, and unplug when charging is done. Never leave a charging device unattended. Always use the charger and battery made for your device.

Lithium-ion battery explosions are unpredictable and volatile. If you overcharge them or use extension cords to charge them, that creates heat that can lead to an explosion.

Tenant Engagement System update Tenant Council Elections are complete

Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) has finished the Tenant Council Elections across all regions. Thank you to our tenants who showed up to make sure their voices were heard.

A total of 217 candidates ran campaigns in the 70 communities that held elections, and 78 tenants were elected to Regional Tenant Councils. An additional 97 tenants were acclaimed as members of their Tenant Council, meaning they were elected without opposition.

Our Tenant Council Members will focus on issues that matter to you.

Chad Hamad, newly-elected Council member in the East region, wants to be a “strong, reliable voice for the tenants.” Making sure that marginalized communities are empowered is also a priority, says fellow Council Member Amanda Zwicker. She sees herself as an “advocate for people with disabilities, seniors and children.”

Nordia Thomas was recently elected to Council in the West region. She said, “I am going to do my best, whatever is best for the people.”

Elected Members from each building or townhouse community will participate in Tenant Councils. These councils will focus on leadership development, community development priorities, and initiatives.

Tenant Councils give tenants a stronger voice in local decision-making. Councils help shape programs, guide local priorities, and strengthen communities.

Inspiring connections through dance With the help of Centre Community Funds

Inspiring Community Dance Connections (ICDC) is a dance program for children and youth ages 4 to 15. It allows them to experience different dance styles ranging from ballet to jazz, with a touch of gymnastics.

With the goal of making the program affordable for children in the community, Abgail began seeking additional support and funding.

In 2024, she applied for the Centre Community Funds, a program established

by The Centre for Advancing the Interests of Black People (“The Centre”). It offers tenants and tenant groups up to $5,000 to fund projects and initiatives that address anti-Black racism.

“I liked the vision of the Centre Community Funds and how it gave [tenants] the chance to start a project in the community,” said Abigail. When asked why she applied for the funds, she mentioned that it was an opportunity to bring change to her community.

“When I found out I was a recipient, I was so excited because it was an opportunity to make my dreams come to life.”

“I really want to be able to encourage connection between community and youth.”

Abigail used the Centre Community Funds to cover costs, so families did not have to pay to participate. This included purchasing the kids’ uniforms, shoes and equipment like ballet bars and mats. Part of the funding also helped fund field trips.

“I wanted the kids to see artwork in real life, [like] watching a show at the National Ballet of Canada and other showcases,” she said.

Abigail hopes that one day ICDC can grow into a non-profit organization, reaching as many people as possible in her community and beyond.

“I really want to be able to encourage connection between community and youth and try to bring the Jane and Finch culture into the world and more of the world into the Jane and Finch community,” said Abigail. “Dance should be a space for everyone to express themselves.”

Congratulations to Raymond, the winner of the “Favourite song or concert” contest from our summer issue. In August of 1985, Raymond and his friends saw pop group Wham! in concert at the old Exhibition Stadium.

“One great part was when the late Mr. George George Michael (left), and Andrew Michael (lead singer of Wham!) taught the audience Ridgeley of Wham! the chorus of a new song,” said Raymond.

“The floor, where I was, sang one part and the stands sang the second part. Later, in early 1986, when the new album came out, I recalled the singalong where George had taught us and directed us. Awesome teenage memories!”

Building community, one rugby game at a time For Abdel Elmaadawi, rugby has always been more than a game—it’s been a lifelong journey.

Abdel is the program coordinator for Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation (TIRF).

His connection to the organization started in high school. “The founder of TIRF was actually my high school rugby coach at Newtonbrook Secondary,” he said. “He wanted every student to have the chance to play, even if they couldn’t afford it.”

TIRF would pay for school or club fees so students could try rugby. The opportunity changed lives, including his own.

Founded in 2011, TIRF is a non-profit organization that uses rugby to build stronger, more inclusive communities.

Their programs include in-school workshops, drop-in sessions, summer camps, and house leagues.

The organization works in 31 of Toronto’s underserved and low-income neighbourhoods. They also partner with Rugby Canada, Rugby Ontario, nine Toronto rugby clubs, and school boards to keep the sport accessible.

TIRF uses rugby as a tool for social good.

“Rugby teaches teamwork, trust, and respect,” Abdel explained. “You can’t win alone. Everyone has to play their positions well.” The lessons players learn go beyond the field. “We see youth grow more

confident, find their voice, and learn to manage their emotions both on and off the pitch,” Abdel said. Alumni show the success of TIRF programs. Some, like Asia Hogan-Rochester, now play rugby at the international level. Others use their new skills to get university scholarships. Many come back as coaches, helping inspire the next generation of players. TIRF also brings rugby directly to Toronto Community Housing tenants through programs like Camp Inspire and YouthWorx.

Even with challenges like limited field space and the rising “pay-to-play” model, where players are required to cover their own expenses or pay fees in order to participate, TIRF continues to grow through partnerships and community support.

Looking ahead, Abdel hopes to expand their programs and connect with even more youth across Toronto.

“Rugby helped me discover my strengths, build discipline, and make lifelong friends,” Abdel said. “It’s more than a sport. It’s a community and a steppingstone for the future.”

Chanta Alliman: stories of the heart When we met Chanta Alliman in her West End Toronto Community Housing neighbourhood, she greeted us warmly in front of her townhouse. We sat down in her backyard and asked her about her recently self-published book, True Love, and her journey as a writer.

Describing herself as a quiet person, Chanta’s writing has become an outlet for self-expression. She said she’s always wanted to become a writer but didn’t take it seriously until she came across an old notebook, and a neighbour asked about a story she wrote a few years ago. Her passion was reignited, and after many late nights, she turned her notes into a 550page novel, using the pen name Chanta Janelle. True Love centres around Misha and Marques, a couple navigating love, betrayal, sisterhood, and redemption. She says it’s a story about choosing yourself, rebuilding from the ashes, and learning that honest love starts from heartbreak.

Chanta is most interested in writing urban romance, drawing inspiration from authors like Eric Jerome Dickey and Sister Souljah.

Although she would love to turn writing into a career, it’s a hobby for now. She’s interested in seeing how her characters evolve and is planning a three-part series.

She’s already started to write the sequel and hopes to have a prequel once she’s finished. As any self-published writer would testify, the biggest challenge is turning her book into sales and building a fan following. Chanta has been working on 16

her social media posts and has had some success with TikTok. Mainly, though it’s been through word-of-mouth.

When she’s not writing, Chanta loves listening to R&B, watching Black films, and creating visual content to bring her characters and stories to life online. For anyone interested in writing a novel, she says, “don’t let anybody stop you from following your dreams.”

League of Her Own: A place to meet, grow, and thrive Encouraging female youth to improve their basketball skills For the fourth summer in a row, Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) and the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) Foundation have run a successful summer basketball camp for TCHC female youth ages 13 to 18. League of Her Own started as a pilot in 2022 in partnership with MLSE Foundation and the University of Toronto.
