Fireworks are dangerous

and not permitted on TCHC property Fireworks are not allowed on Toronto Community Housing properties. Fireworks can hurt people. They can also start fires and damage property.

The City of Toronto puts on firework displays during the year. You can find a public display near you by visiting toronto.ca or calling 3-1-1.

If you want a permit to use fireworks off TCHC property, please contact Toronto Fire Services at toronto.ca/fireworks or 416-338-5340.

Beat the heat Stay cool and safe this summer Drink lots of water.

Keep blinds or drapes closed to block out the sun during the day.

Use a fan next to your window to bring cooler air in at night.

Never leave a person or a pet inside a parked car or in the direct sun.

Call or visit family, friends and neighbours (especially elderly ones who live alone) to make sure they are staying hydrated and keeping cool.

Limit using appliances that generate heat, like your oven.

Know what medications increase your risk to heat. Talk to your pharmacist.

Toronto Community Housing is also providing designated cooling rooms in some buildings to help tenants stay cool during hot weather from June 1 to September 30.

Ask your superintendent to find out if your community room is available as a cooling room.

The Rainbow Alliance is a group for Toronto Community Housing tenants who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+. The group aims to be a safe space for tenants and staff to speak on 2SLGBTQIA+ issues and support and advocate for each other.

Balcony and window safety Please enjoy your balcony and windows responsibly during warm weather. This includes cleaning them up and removing items you have been storing. We will inspect your balcony during upcoming unit inspections.

Balcony safety reminders Never leave young children or pets alone on the balcony.

Do not store property or attach items, including tarps, to balconies. It is a fire hazard.

Barbeques are not allowed on balconies or in common areas.

They are a fire hazard.

Use a drying rack to dry your laundry; Never use your balcony.

Never throw anything off your balcony, including garbage and cigarette butts.

Discard all cigarette butts in an ashtray.

Window locks and screens keep you safe.

Please do not damage, alter, or remove window locks or screens in your unit.

Window locks are used in apartment buildings to protect people and pets from falling through. Windows can be opened 4 inches (or about 10 centimetres) to let in fresh air while keeping you safe. Window screens are not strong enough to stop things from falling through.

Remember: • • •

Removing or altering locks or screens can lead to falls, causing injuries or death.

Altering window locks or screens is against your lease. It could lead to eviction.

You may be charged to fix any alterations.

If you see a tenant using their balcony improperly, or to report any balconies, window locks or screens that need repair, talk to your superintendent or contact the Client Care Centre by emailing help@torontohousing.ca or by calling 416-981-5500 (TRS 7-1-1).

They cannot weigh more than 120 kg total, must not be able to go more than 50 km/h total, must have pedals that the rider can move with their feet or hands, and more.

Are You a Pet Owner?

Did you know that the City of Toronto’s bylaw only permits owning a maximum of three dogs and six cats?

Here’s a quick reminder on the bylaw: • Keep all pets in a clean environment, free from waste and pests that can endanger the health of your pet and neighbours.

• Do not breed animals as that might be a bylaw violation.

• Keep your dogs leashed and under control when outside your home.

• Pick up dog waste immediately.

• Persistent or excessive noise from any animal is not permitted.

Leashing, stooping and scooping keep not only your pets safe, but also ensures that everyone can enjoy our shared public spaces!
