2027 TUSA ELECTIONS WHAT ARE THE ELECTIONS EVEN FOR? It’s that time of year again. The 2026 TUSA Student Council Elections are upon us. This means that once again UTAS students have the chance to vote for the people they want to represent them on the Student Council. What does the Student Council do? One of the primary roles of the Student Council is to sit on university committees to ensure that student voices are in the room. According to the TUSA website there are currently thirteen committees that various members of the Student Council sit on.

The student elections are to give you a chance to control who you would like in the room. Even if there is only one candidate they still need a majority of the students to vote ‘yes’ on being elected otherwise they will not your representative.

Togatus got the opportunity to moderate the 2026 Student Council Election debate. We got to eat (free) pizza, ask the hard questions about concrete steps moving forwards and what these candidates would bring to these roles. Voting closes on the 10th of September so cast your vote now!

MEET THE CANDIDATES! PRESIDENT Candidate name: Solomon Doyle Pronouns: he/they Running as: part of the Take Charge ticket “By December 2027, what will define your leadership?”

I don’t think it should be the role of the President to create a legacy for himself. The President is answerable to the Student Council and the entire student body. We need to look at issues that speak to students most, education quality, cost of living. My legacy is about how I managed these issues.

“Where will you draw the line between advocating for students and maintaining strong relationships with organisations and institutions?”

I don’t think that’s a contradiction that exists. While we need to utilise our relationship to the betterment of students, our relationship to the university is self-justifying. It’s not that we have the relationship with the university, it’s what we do with it. Another prominent thing is the Students as Partners Framework. It’s been in development for some years now. It’s in response to the issue that our job is advising and largely signing off on decisions already made. This framework aims to bring student into the early governance decisions.

“What concrete steps will you take to harness student advocacy to help financial pressures?”

Recently we’ve seen that 52% of our students are food insecure.

Alongside that cost of living and rent prices in our accommodation is increasing. We’ve heard time and time again that there's constraints around resources and budgeting, a part that is often left unsaid is that we have the highest paid executives in the country. It’s not a question about whether or not there are enough resources; it’s about where those resources are. We need to support our food relief resources, such at the Food Hub, we need to be firm in advocating for a permanent funding model.

All our accommodation is answerable to private contracts, this didn’t always used to be the case, where accomodation was owned by the student union. Currently there are limited mechanisms for renegotiating these contracts. It’s really about getting in the room to make those decisions and understand those terms around the contracts.

“Since you’re running unopposed, how will you ensure your presidency remains accountable and responsive to student concerns?”

My role is answerable to the student council and my legitimacy is therefore dependent on the student council and how the wider student body sees my performance. They also have the capacity to find no confidence in me outright, so I am answerable to the students.

“What experience as a leader in a group or working in that advocacy space?”

I’ve been an activist and organiser since high school. I’ve led multiple campaigns both outside and inside the university. My role currently as the undergraduate President means I need to have a strong position within various committees and sit on boards and discuss with people high up in the university and to take on concerns from people with very little contract with the university.

GENERAL SECRETARY Candidate name: Molly Doon Pronouns: she/they Running as: part of the Take Charge ticket “Can you please provide an example of a time your leadership directly benefitted students?”

I see the nature of the Gen Sec. to not directly impact students.

My job is to directly help the Student Council and indirectly affect students. As long as everyone in the team feels wellcommunicated with and well-supported that’s how I directly help students. A lot of the things I do include regular one-onone meetings, making sure that people are okay, checking in the four weeks before, the four weeks after with any concerns and comments the council has.

“What have you learned as Gen Sec this year? Will you make any changes to how you approach the role next year?”

I will absolutely make changes. Twelve months in I think it’s impossible to not find things you want to improve on. I want more social media presence as 60% of students are online. So making sure we can communicate what we’re doing and why we’re doing it to those students online. I am hoping to really manage a healthy work-life balance and help others to do that.

Improving doesn’t start on day one next year and I’m really keen to improve the handover process because if you don’t have a good handover process you’re losing twelve months of work because it wasn’t communicated clearly.

EDUCATION PRESIDENT (UNDERGRADUATE) Candidate: Sharzil Kabir Pronouns: he/him

and to create one coherent voice coming from one place to make that system easier to navigate. I recognise the hard work of all the staff creating the units, I just feel that the students having their input in the units would be a very valuable thing.

Candidate: Florence: Often it doesn’t need to be one over the other. When the university does something not in the best interest for the students it’s the student representative’s job to step in. This role is about representing student needs but working with the university to actually get some meaningful results.

You’ve got 90 seconds to pitch an initiative or project that will directly benefit undergraduate students. What is it? What steps will you take?

Sharzil: Work with fair assessment, how can I improve fair assessment? I also want clearer feedback from the professors so I have clearer feedback on assignments to better support first year students. I want to promote strong student voices.

Another is affordable access to campus. Buses won’t always be free, I want to make free UTAS Metro buses. How can I find a permanent solution for the price of transport?

Sophie: I really want to work with the students as partners. I feel as if the best way to change the units is to really work with the academic societies as they provide an effective way to get an overall opinion and it allows us to get a lot of opinions across disciplines. When we have a solid understanding of what people want and what people need we can streamline our voices to the committees.

Florence: I see the role as improving academic consistency and experience for students. Often there is a lot of inconsistencies across different degrees and units around when things are due. Sometimes they’re midnight, sometimes they’re five in the evening. If you’re juggling things outside of university it’s hard to keep up with that. I think getting consistency across the board would be really helpful. It’s the same for notice for exams, students often don’t know when exams are until relatively close to the exam. This way students are able to plan their responsibilities around their exams.

How will you balance representing students' interests with working constructively with various committees?

Sharzil: I have to be transparent with everyone. If I want to work with both students and the committees I have to take their feedback to both groups and give them their feedback transparently.

What do you see as the biggest issue facing online students, and what practical steps will you take to address it?

The biggest issue for online students is feeling invisible and disconnected from the university community. I will create regular opportunities for students to share their concerns through short surveys, online meetings and private conversations. I will take these concerns to the relevant university staff and follow up until students receive a proper response.

How will you connect with students who may already feel disconnected?

I believe connection begins with listening. I will not wait for students to come to me - I will actively reach out through email, social media, online student groups and virtual meetings. I want to organise informal online catch-ups where students can speak openly, meet other students and feel that they belong to a community.

Since you're running unopposed, how will you ensure your presidency remains accountable and responsive?

Being unopposed does not mean that I can take the position for granted. It means I must work even harder to earn the trust of online students. I will set clear goals at the beginning of my term and regularly update students about what I am working on. I will be honest about what has been achieved, what is still being discussed and what may take longer to resolve. This position is not only a title for me. It is an opportunity to bring online students together, make their voices stronger and help them feel that they are an important part of the university community.

EDUCATION PRESIDENT (POSTGRADUATE) Candidate name: Yuhan Yang Pronouns: she/her Candidate name: Kashif Azeem Pronouns: he/him What do you think is the biggest challenge for postgraduate students, and can you pitch a plan that will address this problem?

Kashif: There are a couple of big issues. One is the disconnection of the post-grad students as they are not heard by the university. They’re a neglected part by the university, only one graduate office takes care of all of it. The disconnection with the post-grads with the coursework and the research. I want to create a more connected HDR community and connect across different schools and campuses.

Yuhan: Post-graduate study shouldn’t be about isolation or fragmentation. If I was elected I would promote an initiative called ‘Post-Grad Connect’. I would ask more postgrads to share their feedback on the courses. I think some icebreaker activities could improve connecting students across courses and campuses. I also want to make accessibility easier to the supports that already exist. We don’t need to reinvent everything but we can use what we already have.

You're responsible for leading student representation on the Academic Senate and ARQAC amongst other committees. How will you balance representing students' interests with working constructively with these bodies?

Kashif: The one liner to that is numbers. They never get offended by numbers, they get offended by the demands and asks. If we propagate some numbers, it is easy to convince the university. The general demands are normally the ones pushed under the rug and that’s what’s been happening the last few years as well.

Yuhan: I don’t think that representing students means obeying the organisations. If I was elected I would ask local students what their major issues and problems are. I’d seek the common issues and give feedback to the organisations. If I disagree with the principles I would explain why and show alternatives.

EQUITY PRESIDENT Candidate name: Jhumu Pronouns: she/they Running as: on the Take Charge ticket “Your role is to advocate for underrepresented students and communities. What experiences and values have shaped you into the leader you are today and how will this show up in this role?”

As an international student I felt like the problem I faced here, most of the students face the same. Because I do Food Hub every week and volunteer for the Red Cross I heard stories from all international persons, and that makes me feel that from this position I can do something for those people. If they’re disabled, an international student, women, any sort of community can come to me and talk to me and so I can be a strong voice for them.

“You’ve mentioned that you want to advocate for stronger welfare support, employment pathways amongst other issues. Talk to me about one of thosewhat concrete steps will you take to do this?”

It took me five months to get a job here, every student knows how difficult it was. Every week I had to pay $314 to pay my rent, I don’t know if I have food for the next day. Those things strike me every day, I was thinking that if there was any opportunity I could grab I would flag those things. For the jobs I would talk to local businesses to invite them to our oncampus events and check their compatibility for their work. I would like to work on our accommodation grant with TUSA, and university accom must have lower costs than outside.

“Since you’re running unopposed, how will you ensure your presidency remains accountable and responsive to student concerns?”

This is more pressure for me because I'm unopposed because it’s all on me. I’m on the ticket that gives me more responsibility. I want a monthly open platform so students could talk to me, my WhatsApp number is open so you can text me. Quarterly I will publish a report as a team on what we have fulfilled and how much is remaining and where we are still struggling. If students have any issues they can communicate with me.

The biggest issue facing students at the moment is cost of living pressures. In the past year we’ve seen doubling in demand for the TUSA Food Hubs. I see securing the future of Food Hubs through an index funding agreement with the university over multiple years. The Food Hub costs TUSA under half a million a year, the university's operating expenses last year $800 million a year. It is not a matter of them lacking the resources, it is a matter of them rearranging the money. In terms of rent hike student accommodation is attended by private third party contracts. What can be done is small little steps such as asking for the contract and pricing terms and further moving into negotiating with the independent contractors and seeking stronger security for students.

“Can you pitch us a new student initiative (or add to an existing initiative) that will be impactful and meaningful to students.”

Oliver: What I'm working on at the moment is bedding packs for arriving students at accommodation. One of the biggest things we got from our Vent Tent feedback from our international students is that they have very little or nothing. They don’t have bedding or cutlery or bathroom essentials. We’ve surveyed Christ College and Fisher and the Sandy Bay apartment students, hopefully the plan is to trial that next semester then get it full going next semester. This is in partnership with several hotel suppliers and the Australian Bedding Stewardship Council.

The most fun I’ve had this year is doing our vent tent program and going into various student accomodation, the bigs things there are rent and conditions which have been the highest ones we’ve heard feedback on. “What do you see as the biggest issue students studying on the Cradle Coast face, and what steps will you take to help alleviate these issues?”

Hannah: Through personal peer communication and reading the student newspaper I concern myself with a number of things; accommodation, financial insecurity , and the isolation many of us on the Cradle Coast face. It often feels like Cradle Coast is a bit of an afterthought.

One thing I'd like to do for my campus is workshop some ideas for frequent student feedback which is a similar concept to the free library on our campus. Where instead of books exchanged students can write notes of encouragement and support and leave those for people to interact with. Just finding avenues and resources amongst ourselves and others.

Davina: The biggest I see facing students is the rapidly increasing cost of living. This, combined with the pittance students receive, either as Centrelink benefits or parttime/casual employees, has brought many students to the brink, and beyond, of quitting their studies. In the past, students’ biggest worry was the HECS debt they incurred to study and how long after they left studying it would take them to pay it off. Now that debt has grown to encompass the cost of merely existing as a student. It is time we as students, their representatives, and institutions demand that if the Australian Government and Universities want their target met, they need to put their hands in their pockets and cough up.

how do you plan to ensure that students here feel as connected, represented, and supported as those on larger, more urban campuses?”

Hannah: People want to have their stories heard, there’s a want and need to socialise and support each other. I’d like to find ways to communicate with each other. Aside from that I’d commit to being in person as much as possible for anyone who would like to chat. I touched on it before but working on options for the Cradle Coast students to be our own support network and take inspiration from student newspapers and vent tents and expand and collaborate on those things. Those will help the connectivity between campuses and student experiences.

Davina: Cradle Coast is often described as being remote, but from our perspective, Hobart can feel just as remote from us.

The difference is that, as a smaller campus, we have something incredibly valuable: a close-knit community. Over recent years, on-site student support has reduced significantly, despite our student body growing to include Medical students across Years 1–5, Nursing, Pharmacy, Psychology, Social Work, UPP, Agricultural Science and many distance students who rely on our campus. I would advocate strongly for increased and meaningful on-site student support, while also creating more opportunities for students to have their voices heard. Cradle Coast does not need to become a carbon copy of a larger urban campus to feel connected or represented. We should be connected to the wider university community while still being recognised for who we are.

NUS DELEGATES

The National Union of Students (NUS), is the peak representative and advocacy body for higher education students in Australia.

Majority of university student unions are affiliated with the NUS which gives the union power and voice in numbers, and allows them to act as a semi-official spokesperson for tertiary education students in Australia. Notably, the NUS was influential in guaranteeing 40% of SSAF allocated funding be directed to student unions. A delegate to the NUS, which is what we vote for, means voting for a representative of TUSA to help discuss with other student unions issues relating to quality of education, academic freedom, social security amongst others.

Delegates meet multiple times a year, often hold portfolios, and are expected to frequently communicate ideas and support.

Candidate name: Molly Doon Pronouns: she/they Running as: part of the Take Charge ticket NUS can be seen as ‘too political’ but that’s the case because student issues are political. UTAS is the only university in Tasmania and that means it gets away with not having competition. By talking to our inter-state counterparts we figure out what is happening across the Bass Strait. We’re making relationships that are critical to the quality of living for Tasmanian students.

NORTHERN CAMPUS PRESIDENT Candidate name: Maxine McLaughlin Pronouns: she/her “Do you see Launceston as an isolated campus? If so, how will you unify the campus, and if not, why is it not isolated?”

I think that each of the campuses outside of Hobart are all isolated in their own way. Same as Cradle Coast, same as Rozelle. The events stem from Hobart and can reach out from there. Isolation isn’t necessarily a bad thing, we’re able to build community because we are a smaller community. Being able to have the funding represent that and have someone represent us to have campus in the correct meetings. While there are other clubs around there are nowhere near as many clubs as Hobart has which is an area I’m interested in growing.

I think one of the big barriers we have for events is the timing of events. There are so many different classes that are running, but the events seem to run at the same time so we lose a lot of reach for students. I think something like movie nights where students can meet each other can be really impactful.

This is news to me! I don’t think the way I would approach anything would change, we have to keep each other accountable and there's a reason I was running for this position to begin with.

“Students in Tassie don’t know too much about what’s happening in Sydney. Could you talk to us about a project that you’d either like to work on if elected, or one that is currently in operation that you will work to develop.”

Strengthening the Rozelle student community by creating more regular, student led events that connect us across disciplines and help Sydney based students feel genuinely part of UTAS! I’d also work to integrating our support services on campus Rozelle students feel seen, heard, and supported!

“Considering the Rozelle campus isn’t in Tasmania, why do you think it’s important to have Rozelle representation in the TUSA Student Council?”

Rozelle students experience university life differently from those in Tasmania, so having dedicated representation ensures our unique needs, challenges, and community strengths are not overlooked! Strong Rozelle representation helps bridge the distance between campuses and makes sure Sydney students have an equal voice in shaping UTAS! “Since you’re running unopposed, how will you ensure your presidency remains accountable and responsive to student concerns?”

Even though I’m running unopposed, I will stay accountable by actively seeking student feedback through open forums, regular check ins, get honest feedback and transparent communication.

My focus is on building a community where every Rozelle student feels comfortable raising concerns and confident that their voice leads to real action!
