SCRUMPTIOUS SLIME

THE SCIENCE BEHIND EDIBLE SLIME

» Saucepan » Plastic sandwich bag » 10g (1 tbsp) cornflour/cornstarch » 45ml (3 tbsp) chocolate syrup » 395g (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk

Instructions 1. Pour the milk into the saucepan and heat on a low heat.

2. Slowly stir the cornflour into the warm milk. Continue heating and stirring over a low heat for 20 minutes or until the mixture thickens.

3. Remove from the heat and stir in the chocolate syrup.

4. Place in a sandwich bag and refrigerate.

5. Once cold, roll and squeeze into any slimy shape you want and watch it flow!

Cornflour or cornstarch is a starch made up of long chains of sugar molecules called glucose which are joined together in a coiled up ball. When exposed to heat and milk, the starch particles absorb water from the milk, causing them to swell. These swollen particles start to press up against each other. This reduces the movement of the liquid, resulting in it thickening or becoming more viscous.

Eventually the starch particles burst, freeing up long strands of starch which swell further and absorb the fluid outside the particles. This traps the remaining water in the mixture and turns it into a highly viscous gel or slime. The slime flows like a thick liquid but can be rolled around like a soft solid. The advantage of this recipe is that the slime is edible once you have finished with it!

HOLIDAY AT THE FARM a parent’s recommendation

We have been holidaying at North Hayne Farm in North Devon since our daughter was 18 months old. She is now 8½ and we are on our 12th visit as I write this! We have stayed at a lot of places around the UK since having our daughter but I can honestly say that nowhere compares.

But how can I explain what makes this place so amazing?

The main thing is definitely the team. The owners, Cheryl and Roger, go above and beyond to make sure your stay is the best it can be. They are so dedicated and such lovely people.

We have visited every year since discovering the farm, at all different times of year, and all have been amazing. Cheryl and Roger have seen our little girl grow up and they have been part of that process. She calls the farm her second home and that is exactly what it feels like every time we visit.

North Hayne Farm has so much to offer for children. The animals are a big part of the experience - every day the children can feed them, ride a donkey and enjoy a ‘close encounter’ (handling, feeding or walking an animal). They can experience forest school sessions, be a farmer for the morning, go on bat walks and exploration trails, play in the games room and indoor play barn – and all this within safe, secure surroundings. Cheryl and Roger have made the whole site autism friendly and suitable for those with disabilities.

And the parents aren’t forgotten – there is a hot tub for every cottage and beauty treatments on offer, plus things to make life easier such as frozen homemade meals and a babysitting service. Even your supermarket shop gets unpacked!

Incorporating Music into your Little One’s day!

Babies remember music

It’s no secret babies love to listen to voices – in fact, very early on they will recognise the tone, rhythm and pitch of a familiar voice.

During their first year, children will pick up all the sounds they need to know so that they can learn and develop the ability to speak in their ‘mother tongue’.

When listening to music, children are grasping elements of their native language. They will practise making these sounds in preparation for producing their first recognisable words in a couple of months.

The accompanying rocking and jiggling actions are not accidental.

Research has shown that when we move and sing at the same time we engage nearly all of our brain, which enables us to translate and store new information very efficiently.

• Try to punctuate your day with familiar tunes and rhymes so that your child associates a happy routine with positive musical sounds. Here we talk to Monkey Music, to give you some top tips on how you can incorporate music into your little one’s day.

SHOULD IT BE BANNED?

Whether you pierce your baby or toddler’s ears is a personal choice that most parents have strong opinions about. The argument for banning it ignites online and in the media every once in a while, and petitions for making it illegal it garner thousands of signatures. Some people even claim it’s a form of child abuse.

Why do people pierce their baby’s ears?

GET TING IT OVER AND DONE WITH Getting a piercing is painful, so some parents decide to pierce their daughter’s ears as a baby to get it out of the way. After all, the vast majority of women have their ears pierced. In getting it done before they’re really aware of what is going on, it gets it out of the way and they probably won’t remember the pain.

It may also be easier in some ways for parents to ensure that the fresh piercings are properly looked after than when the child is older.

C U LT U R A L E X P E C TAT I O N S A N D G E N D E R REINFORCEMENT In many parts of the world, it is a cultural expectation that a baby girl should have her ears pierced. In fact, to this day some hospitals in Spain carry out ear piercing within hours of a girl being born.

In such places, even if a girl is dressed in obviously feminine clothing, she may be continually mistaken for a boy due to her unpierced ear lobes. There is also the possibility that this may trigger bullying when the child reaches school age as they are likely to be the odd one out.

Why are people against piercing ears so young?

B A B I E S D O N ’ T U N D E R S TA N D W H AT ’ S HAPPENING As they’re so little and don’t understand what’s going on, babies and toddlers can’t agree to having their ears pierced. One moment they’re on your lap happy and gurgling and the next they’re in pain.

There was actually a video that went viral around this time last year that showed just that, which made for upsetting viewing. (See toddle.club/earpiercing) T H E Y M I G H T N OT WA N T E A R P I E R C I N G S As babies don’t understand what’s going on and can’t speak, they can’t tell you that they don’t want ear piercings. They might grow up to not want any piercings and then they’ll be left with scars on their ear lobes when they stop wearing them. There’s also a small chance that they could grow up with gender dysphoria. If they feel like they’re supposed to be male and decide to change to that gender, those scars could be a painful reminder of a time when they were a girl.

TRADITION Of course, part of these cultural expectations are formed by tradition. If your grandmother had your mother’s ears pierced as a baby, your mother had yours pierced under 6 months and it was the same for the rest of your family, it would seem quite normal to you. If there is a tradition such as this within the family, you would be more likely to follow it and also get your baby’s ears pierced.

IT ’S SELFISH Some people think it’s selfish to pierce a child’s ears so young as it is putting them through unnecessary pain in order for their daughter to have pretty ears, as though they are some kind of fashion accessory.

Some even go as far as calling it child abuse as it is physically harming them and causing them distress, while other types of physically harming children are illegal. While it is annoying to have to correct people who call your daughter a boy, is it worth putting your child through pain to show they’re a girl? I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s selfish - however, I wouldn’t personally do it. Even after seeing my daughter in immense pain after open surgery at 5 weeks old, I still find it difficult when she cries in pain for far less serious reasons. She recently cut her cheek badly and we had to go to A&E for it to be glued. Seeing her cry while the nurses cleaned the wound and glued it was awful and I’d never put her through any kind of pain that I didn’t need to.

Others believe there should be an age restriction applied, making it illegal to pierce the ears of children under a certain age. Purely from a practical point of view, this would be difficult to put into practice however as children don’t have photo ID to prove their age. A birth certificate could be taken along, but it would be easy to borrow the birth certificate of a sibling or friend’s child if you’re insistent on having your child’s ears pierced below the legal age. Such a law might even drive parents to pierce their children’s ears at home, which could also be very risky as they may not use the proper equipment or sterilise things correctly.

People who want to make ear piercing illegal are in the minority however - whether they agree with piercing babies’ ears or not, most people believe that it shouldn’t be illegal. After all, there are already so many rules on how we raise our children, this would be yet another way of restricting parents.

It is also worth pointing out at this stage that male circumcision is perfectly legal, but is painful and the child has no choice. It goes without saying that circumcision carries far bigger implications than ear piercing, yet it never seems to attract the same attention as ear piercing babies.

S O… I S I T A B U S E ?

So, should it be illegal?

From time to time there is a surge of interest in this debate. Tens of thousands of people have signed petitions calling for it to be illegal to pierce a baby or toddler’s ears. Some even extend their views to it being banned for any child. This is for a variety of reasons, but the most common explanations are that the child isn’t old enough to understand the ramifications of piercings, or that they are too young to look after their piercings properly, putting them at risk of infection.

Some say that piercing such a young child’s ears is child abuse, however, there are far worse things that happen which make this debate pale in comparison.

Calling it child abuse seems too harsh a label to me – and calling it such would potentially make real child abuse seem less significant. Ear piercing isn’t generally done maliciously, so it probably shouldn’t be considered as abuse.

U LT I M AT E LY, I T ’ S YO U R D E C I S I O N Whether you want to pierce your daughter’s ears or not, it isn’t currently illegal. As such, it is your choice and you know the decision that you think is right for you and your child. Just make sure that you choose a reputable piercer in a clean, sterile environment and look after your child’s ears with care.

Reflux – when babies bring up milk during or shortly after feeding – is pretty common. It isn’t usually a cause for concern and you don’t normally need to get medical advice if your baby seems otherwise happy and healthy, and is gaining weight appropriately.

However, in some cases, babies suffer from extreme reflux – also known as GORD (Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease). This is a long-term form of reflux where the stomach contents rise up and irritate the child’s throat. It can be painful and is often misdiagnosed as colic.

IS THERE A CURE?

No, but it can be controlled. Give your baby smaller, more frequent feeds. Keep baby’s body straight whilst feeding and hold your baby upright for a while after feeding - do not lay them flat on their backs after the feed. Prop the cot up whilst the baby is asleep. A feed thickener can be added to milk or expressed breast milk or a pre-thickened formula can be tried.

WHAT CAUSES GORD? The muscle and valve that lead into the stomach are not working properly, which allows the feed, along with gastric acid, to be regurgitated causing the contents of the stomach to flow back up into the oesophagus. You can also have “silent reflux”, when the child is not actually sick.

1. Start by adding a small glob of hot glue/PVA to the underside of the pinecone “branches”.

2. Then take about 30cm of string or ribbon and hot glue it to the top of the pinecone.

Then stick a tiny pom pom onto the dab of glue. Repeat for all the pinecone tips.

3. Clean the pinecones up by peeling away any glue strands.

The little pom poms look just like ornaments hanging from a tree!
