MARBLED JUBILEE CUPCAKES Ingredients

(makes 12)

• 170g margarine • 170g sugar • 3 eggs • 170g self raising flour • Red and blue food colouring

• Icing sugar • Red and blue M&Ms, or similar PLUS:

• Paper cake cases • Muffin Tin • Cocktail sticks (to make flags)

Directions 1. Mix together the margarine and sugar in a large bowl (with a wooden spoon or mixer) until smooth and pale in colour.

2. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each.

3. Stir in the flour.

4. Divide mixture into three bowls, add red food colouring to one, blue to another, and leave one uncoloured.

5. Put cake cases into the muffin tray, and put a

spoon of each colour cake mixture into each cake case. (Only fill them half way as they will rise!)

6. Bake in an oven for 15 minutes at 180oC. 7. When cooled, make some icing by mixing icing

sugar with a little water, and spread onto the cakes.

8. Add M&Ms, and print out some flags to stick to

cocktail sticks to decorate from toddle.fun/jubilee.

nals child’s sigthat r u o y n o k up way How to picpond to them in a being and res oves their well impr As a parent we can find ourselves on an emotional roller coaster, desperately looking for some solid ground to hold onto as we plead with our child, ‘What do you want from me?’. The good news is you have the roadmap in front of you. It takes time to learn but the ability to pick up on our children’s signals and respond to them are the most important parenting skills we can have. Being really understood and having a close connection with your caregiver, even when you feel your worst, is the key to psychological wellbeing. Read on for some top tips about how to do just that.

Allow Space

The first tip is to allow space. While we may be tempted to jump in when our child is struggling, fix a problem or stop the crying, take a breath first of all so you can tune into what’s really going on for them. Giving space allows you to respond (not react) and if you are interested in what’s going on for them, you lay the groundwork for them becoming interested too as their brains grow.

Next, Look for Clues With newborn babies we spend hours trying to figure out what they are communicating. With close

inspection, we scrutinise their little face to try to discern their need - are they hungry, tired or have a dirty nappy? As babies grow into toddlers they learn to signal needs more clearly but they don’t always ‘cue’ their needs obviously.

Remember - behaviour does not always clearly signal the emotion underneath, but all behaviour is communication, so we need to decode what’s going on. For example, kids may act in a grumpy way when they are hungry or say they are ‘fine’ when they feel upset. By paying close attention to their non-verbal behaviours, facial expression and tone of voice we can learn to read their ‘cues’ (which shows their needs) and their ‘miscues’ (which hides their needs). The closer we are able to truly read their needs the better we will be at responding to them.

Organise Their Feelings

Babies and toddlers have intense emotions but need help from adults to organise their feelings.

We do this with babies by picking them up when they cry or holding their hand when they are anxious. We know from brain science that having another person with us when our feelings are intense means they settle more quickly.

Pixar’s 2015 computer-animated film Inside Out is a great way to teach children about the different emotions they experience.

Get Your Timing Right

If there is behaviour that needs addressing after a big emotional moment, it’s important to come back to it later, when everyone’s brain is in a calm state. Use pictures and figures, read stories and gesture for young children. For children of nursery school age who can use words, start by connecting with the need, something like “I could see how upset you were when I picked you up from nursery, you were having so much fun and didn’t want to come home”. Then and only then discuss the behaviour, something like “we need to find another way for you to let me know how big your feeling is because hitting me is not the right way”. Without anger or judgement, in time your child will open up to you, learn to reflect back, own their mistakes and try again next time. Their brain is a work in progress and the parent who can read their need, respond calmly and teach them later will reap the rewards for years to come.

For older children it’s very powerful to name the emotion you see. For example, you might say, “You seem so angry about that,” or, “You are so sad to leave”. Children need to be taught the vocabulary of emotions so they understand what is going on, so take every opportunity you can to teach them (by the way, the film Inside Out is great for this).

Note that while boundaries need to be held calmly and firmly, when emotions are high this is not the time for long explanations. Short, clear communication and being alongside your child will allow their big emotions to settle and what seemed overwhelming will become manageable.

In Conclusion…

Use these tips consistently, gently and genuinely and your communication will become strong and healthy and with that your relationship will thrive.

As your child feels connected to you, they learn the skills of emotional regulation and your relationship with them becomes the vehicle for positive change.

The research is clear: healthy family relationships improve wellbeing and act as a protective factor against life challenges and mental health difficulties now and for many years to come.

Ways to Encourage Toddler Independence

The “Me Do It” toddler phase can be challenging, but it’s an important developmental time. Our friends at Bright Horizons share five ways to encourage this independence.

The stage between 18 and 36 months will include varying degrees of intensity depending on your toddler’s temperament. This stage comes with challenges such as toddler temper tantrums, which are well known, but try to also see it as a cause for celebration. It shows your child is recognising themselves as separate from others and feels safe and confident enough to take risks.

When children are allowed to try things on their own, they master new skills and build self-esteem.

Allowing your child opportunities to do things independently takes longer than if you helped, but the end results are worth the extra effort.

Tips for encouraging toddler development:

Offer reasonable choices when possible.

It’s not always possible, but this is a good time to start picking your battles and it’s important to enable them to feel they have some element of control. For issues you feel you need to challenge, try offering two alternatives, e.g., “You can wear the green shirt or the blue shirt.” This strategy allows you to set appropriate limits, while acknowledging your child’s need to “do it myself.”

Make your home toddler-friendly.

Keep plastic cups and bowls or pots and pans in a low cupboard within your child’s reach. Buy simple trousers or skirts with an elastic waistband instead of poppers and buttons. Place sturdy stools in the bathroom. This helps your toddler become more independent while ensuring safety.

Work together on toddler-friendly activities.

Children have an innate need to contribute.

Toddlers can help with chores and other household activities. Let your toddler pour flour into a batch of cookie dough or buy child-size gardening tools to be used in the garden. This will boost their selfconfidence, which can also increase cooperation.

Add “toddler time” to your daily routine.

Toddlers are notorious dawdlers and can wreak havoc on a tight or well-oiled schedule. Try to build some extra time into your routine to allow for your toddler’s burgeoning independence. You’ll feel more patient and your toddler will feel more in control.

Give clear, simple directions.

Sometimes you must intervene to prevent behaviour problems from developing. In this case, use clear, direct language. Tell your child what you want him to do, rather than what you don’t want him to do, and offer empathy and understanding to reduce toddler tantrums. For example, perhaps your toddler wants to climb the shelves to reach a favourite snack. Say, “This isn’t safe. I will help you.

You can get the bowls from the bottom cupboard.”

It’s only the beginning Your child will continue to navigate between independence and the need for parental security throughout childhood and even into young adulthood. The struggle is normal, healthy, and completely necessary for children to become strong, self-sufficient adults. Your role as a parent is to lead them through by example and guide them with gentle direction, while fostering and maintaining a warm, trusting relationship.

Little Dragon’s Day Nursery is a family run day nursery located in the picturesque village of Snitterfield on the outskirts of Stratford-UponAvon. We care for children aged 3 months to 5 years and the nursery is open from 8am until 6pm Monday to Friday with early drop off and late pick up options available upon request.

The nursery is owned and managed by Kate and Neil who are parents of 3 little ones. Kate

also brings a breadth of experience having enjoyed working as a qualified Primary School Teacher for the last 12 years. Our facilities are brand new following a full renovation of an

old church. We are big on nature and the outdoors, with children being able to explore our 3.5 acre field and forest school. We have a creative and ‘down to earth’ take on the Early

Years Foundation Stage where children experience diverse and spontaneous child-led activities supported by our skilful practitioners.
