The

Sheep Arrive at Nursery Lyncrest Nursery recently introduced two new sheep to their outside play area. The children have named them “Sunshine” and “Cloud”.

They are just some of the wonderful play equipment at the Nursery. The children play outside at every opportunity to take part in role-play, muddy and sensory play. They have been busy planting bulbs and plants to flower in the summer. They love to grow vegetables in their mini allotment. The nursery is part of the Lyncrest Primary School. There are funded places for part time or full time.

Watermelon Ice Lollies Our friends over at Eco Rascals know how quickly a tasty ice lolly can change a day. Children consider them to be treats so lollies are a great way to give them healthy yet delicious snacks.

As well as just making children happy, they also help them to stay hydrated, reduce waste by using up leftover fruit and veggies and they also help relieve pain from teething.

These lollies are great for children from one year and up and for those starting out on their weaning journey, you can use the little food feeders and freeze some breastmilk mixed with fruit or veggies that they enjoy.

MAKeS:

4-6 ice lollies

Equipment:

METHOD: 1. Blend the watermelon and share between the ice lolly moulds and place in the freezer for one hour.

Children are born with a fantastic inquisitive nature, a need to play, to learn and grow. When these eager explorers embark on their more formal learning adventures, whether that be in a traditional school environment, through home schooling or through other means, the importance of everything that accompanies their core education should never be underestimated.

Now that summer has arrived and brought the glorious sunshine with it, it is fantastic to see Forest School experiences taking on new heights with children everywhere; and not just in tree climbing! Planting vegetables, finding mini beasts, creating obstacle courses to name but a few activities that combine Science, Art, DT and PE with general world exploration.

Here at Northampton High School, our pupils have been building dens in our very own Forest School, located in the wild area on our 27-acre site.

During this particular magical and fun afternoon, the children demonstrated fantastic discussion and evaluation skills. “Let’s try this instead,” followed by, “I think the crossing over of bamboos might make it stronger,” were just two comments that could be heard from one group. In activities such as this, what really matters, and indeed shines through, is the reality that was observed on this day; children working effectively as a

team, sharing ideas, trying new things together, learning about the relative strengths of different structures, taking on different roles and using their creativity. Above all, watching the children truly enjoying their learning and demonstrating a huge respect and indeed knowledge for our natural world is heart-warming.

The recent Mental Health Awareness week also encompassed the theme of getting out into nature.

The words of The Duchess of Cambridge remind us that ‘a child’s mental health is just as important as their physical health and deserves the same amount of support’. A Family Practice Starting Young

You’re never too young to start yoga and by introducing it to your children at an early age you are giving them a gift for life, as it will help them build a strong and flexible body, improve co-ordination and balance, achieve a peaceful and relaxed state of mind, sleep well, build their self-confidence and improve their focus, memory and concentration.

There are many wonderful and simple ways to make yoga a real part of your everyday family life, bringing happiness and harmony to your home. By practising with your children you will strengthen the bond and trust between you all, as you foster health and wellbeing for your whole family.

Nurture Yourself First

To nurture your children well, you must start by nurturing yourself well. That’s why the first practice in my book Nurturing Your Family With Yoga is for you, the caregiver.

It’s a gentle, guided meditation, similar to the Becalmed Yoga Nidra album on Spotify, iTunes or Amazon Music. If you have time I would recommend you listen to one of these tracks, which last between 6 and 22 minutes, before sharing yoga with your children. It will help you to feel calm, grounded and patient, so you are at your best for your children.

Tips for a Successful Family Yoga Practice

BUTTERFLY

★ Keep your family yoga practice simple and light-hearted. ★ Let your children practise when they are ready to. Don’t put pressure on them to practise at a certain time or in a specific way. ★ Encourage your children to use their imaginations, as they croak like frogs, flap their butterfly wings or stand tall like trees. Make it fun!

★ Children love to make up their own versions of yoga poses. Encourage them to be creative with their bodies. ★ Children are natural mimics. If you develop your own yoga practice, they will enjoy copying you. ★ Turn off your phone and computer during your family yoga practice. You will teach your children to be attentive and focused by being attentive to them.

Tree: This is a great one to start

with, as children love balancing poses. If you’re practising with very young children you can support them by holding their hands or they can make the shape of Tree pose whilst lying on their back. This is called Sleeping Tree. Tree pose will strengthen their legs and arms, improve their balance, relieve anxiety and develop focus, concentration and confidence.

1. Stand tall with your TREE feet together 2. Lift your right foot to the inside of your left leg 3. Bring your hands in prayer pose in front of your chest and then above your head 4. Balance for as long as you can and then repeat on the other side Ask your children to imagine what type of tree they are and what season it is. They could be an ancient oak tree, a fir tree on a snowy mountain, a kapok tree in a tropical rainforest or a palm tree swaying in the warm breeze on the beach.

Butterfly: Butterfly is a lovely pose for children of all ages. It will maintain the natural flexibility of their hips and strengthen their back.

1. Sit with the soles of your feet together and hold your ankles or feet.

2. Close your eyes and take a few steady breaths in and out.

3.Imagine the colour and patterns of your wings. After your practice you could try drawing or painting them.

THE Lifecycle of a Butterfly Sequence:

This is a wonderful way to be imaginative and playful with your children. Developing a child’s imagination has been shown to help them reduce anxiety and build resilience.

1. Lie on your front and imagine you are a caterpillar. You are very hungry and crawl around, munching on all the delicious leaves.

Imagine you are growing bigger and bigger.

2. Now stand up and lift your arms on either side of your head with your hands together in prayer position. Slowly turn round and round and imagine you are changing into a chrysalis. Close your eyes and stand very still, imagining that you are hanging from the underside of a leaf.

3. When you are ready, slowly emerge from the chrysalis as a beautiful butterfly by sitting in Butterfly pose. Flap your wings by gently lifting your knees up and down.

Frog: Imagine you are a frog with long, powerful legs and see how far you can jump in this pose. As a frog you can choose to jump on land, swim in the water or make lots of noise ‘ribbit, ribbit!’ Frog pose will strengthen your legs and back, stretch your hips and thighs as well as improving your balance.

1. Squat with your feet slightly wider than hip-width apart 2. Lower your heels down to the floor but don’t worry if you can’t bring them flat on the ground 3. Place your hands on the floor in front of your feet Tell your children that many grown ups have lost the ability to squat comfortably because they spend so much time sitting in chairs. The muscles at the back of their legs, called hamstrings, become tight and their back muscles weaken, which can lead to backache. If your children squat every day in Frog pose, then they will keep their legs and back as healthy as possible.

Introducing your children to yoga at an early age will lay the foundations for their teen and adult years, as it supports good mental, physical and emotional health throughout life. A family yoga practice, however simple, will give you and your children precious moments together. I hope it is full of joy and happiness.

Ins tr uc tio ns : Mini-beasts are more active in spring and summer, but it is possible to find them all year round if you know where to look – and you look carefully. Good places to look for mini-beasts in woodland include: • In or near any kind of flowers or plants • On leaves, in long grass or in a hedge or bush • In or near any kind of shelter, including cracks in tree bark, piles of deadwood or leaves

NO TE S & TIP S:

• Make sure everyone knows not to touch the mini-beasts.

• Adopt quiet and slow “David Attenborough” tones and encourage the troopers to do the same. This will have no effect on the bugs whatsoever, but will avoid startling other kinds of wildlife.

• Move slowly and carefully, making no sudden movements.

• If you’re anxious, don’t show it. Your children take their cues from you, and if you show you’re nervous around mini-beasts, they will learn to be too.

• If you find a mini-beast that could bite or sting, explain to your troopers that it is the creature’s natural defence mechanism.

• Challenge misconceptions about mini-beasts: Bees aren’t just stinging machines, they’re arch pollinators and without them many plants and crops (including the ones we eat) would die.

Flies can be a pain, but they are busy workers in the garden, pollinating, helping to dispose of decaying waste and serving as a protein-rich meal for birds, frogs, spiders and other insects. Worms aren’t slimy mini-snakes, they’re “nature’s ploughs” turning waste into nutrient-rich soil. Dung beetles mean that the world isn’t covered in poo!

• Once your mini-beast hunt is complete, don’t forget to thoroughly wash your hands.

Child Psychologists have championed the emphasis of play and imagination on the healthy development of a child for over 50 years. Erik Erikson (1963) said that “make believe” games at the crucial life stage of ages 3-5 will help a child find their “purpose”, through the promotion of a sense of inner belief in their abilities, and Piaget (1971) claimed that imaginative play is a crucial stage in the cognitive development of children aged 2-7 helping them to develop abstract thought and problem-solving skills. Mooli Lahad (1992) discovered that through imaginative expression, children develop emotional coping skills and those with greater expression of imagination were shown to cope better with later life crises.

Neuroscientists have actually discovered that play increases brain plasticity - play has been shown to fire up synaptic connections between different parts of the brain and activates the brain’s emotional hard drive, the amygdala. When children engage in social play, fMRI data shows increased activity in the pre frontal cortex - the place where we make our decisions, manage impulses, and problem solve. In short, play has been shown to create a faster, more adaptable and better, emotionally regulated brain.

That’s the science bit… So why do we play?

We play in order to connect with the world of our thoughts and the world of “reality” around us. For a Follow us for daily updates!

child, the world of play offers an imaginative lens through which to interact with the world and make sense of relationships and life events. It offers them a sense of mastery and control when in “real life” they cannot achieve this.

In the imaginative world of the 2-3 year old, they can try out being a policeman, a shopkeeper, a princess, a witch, a king… any number of roles that in their real world, they could not be. This offers a child the opportunity to feel powerful, to feel vulnerable, to show anger, to feel magical, to be cruel, and to be friendly. This may not sound like much or, in the cases of more negative emotion, something we don’t want to encourage, but it is an essential learning experience.

It is essential that children get to experiment with these different states and get to learn, in a safe and contained way, how they can manage these strange sensations that bubble up inside of us, that adults call emotions. We can try on new roles, and we can take them off. We can experiment with the states of being that we like, and those that we don’t. We can learn how it might feel to be another, and we can think about how characters might interact with each other. No-one in their right mind would try to explain the concepts of “empathy” , “social hierarchy” or “subtext” to a 4 year old, as it would very likely be met with a blank stare, but watch a group of 4 year olds engaging in imaginative play and you will see every sophisticated nuance of these ideas playing out, without a single explanation required.

Play doesn’t even have to involve another to offer these brain-building, and social learning benefits.

In one research paper, “Doll play” was shown to significantly increase prefrontal cortex activity, regardless of whether the child played alone with the doll or with another. This research made the important point that, for children who may struggle with social interactions, doll play or imaginative play involving “pretend characters” can help them practice social situations - it can offer a script and a chance to try out new things. In other words, if you have a child who struggles in big groups or with others, give them figure toys and allow them to interact, engage and practice.

Childhood brings with it many strange and difficult events for a little soul - new siblings, new playgroups, new houses and maybe more difficult, adverse events such as bereavement, divorce or trauma. One of the things I am most passionate about in my work is the healing power of creative expression and the imagination - I have seen in my own therapeutic work and in the research of others, the incredible power of the brain to develop beautiful and creative coping mechanisms for even the most terrible of traumas. The brain is a magical thing, and it never ceases to amaze me what it can overcome.

So, we know now that play helps brain circuitry and it offers emotional projections, as well as confidence building, but what about those children who have vivid imaginations and engage confidently with others? Does play help them? Absolutely it does - because imaginative play helps the assertive child learn the art of compromise. How often do we, as parents, start an imaginative game with an under 5 year old only to be told, “You are doing it wrong,” or, “You are supposed to say this”? Whilst this is frustrating for the parent, and one of the 34 July - Sept 2021 Toddle About

biggest reasons parents tell me they don’t like to play ‘make believe things’- it’s actually one of imaginative play’s biggest gifts. This is a real life example for the child of ‘power vs control’ - I want the game to go like this, because that’s how it goes in my imagination, but I have to learn that the other person’s imagination is not the same as my own and they want to do something different… so we will have to compromise. That’s a huge amount of social learning for a little person! In that one interaction they have had to consider the emotional state of another, regulate their own, and agree to collaborate for the greater good, and still try to find enjoyment from it.

No one needs to give any modern day parent a lecture on the evils of the tablet screen, or the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle, and not every parent has the time or resources to play for hours on end creating elaborate fairy-tale and mythical structures with their children. You don’t have to.

But what you might have to do, is allow them to be “bored”.

Children are hardwired to find play in anything, and whilst of course they may not like it if you turn off the TV and tell them to ‘go play with your toys’, they may discover in that moment of boredom and non-stimulation, a space where the imagination steps in. In this imagination space there is so much joy, learning, and resilience-building to be found… so much. In fact, if we as adults found more time to “go play with our toys,” perhaps the world would be a more empathetic, creative and magical place.
