Open Stage has launched a new sensory baby session - Hoo-Ha Too - especially for crawling babies. These sessions include all of the fun from their popular Hoo-Ha classes, such as magical lighting, songs and activities, but the sessions are aimed at babies who are just starting to get on the move. A useful guide to

cloth Nappies Cloth nappies can seem really overwhelming before you start using them. Turns out, it’s really not that complex and once you get used to them it’s actually pretty simple!

Nappy Types: There are various types of cloth

nappies on the market, from the traditional Terry squares or prefolded muslins to shaped nappies, pocket nappies and simple, all-in-one nappies.

They can come in different sizes as your child gets bigger or a single ‘birth to potty’ size which can be adjusted to make the nappy bigger or smaller. You can also choose velcro or poppers depending on the brand.

Everyone has different preferences so, if you’re unsure, we recommend that you contact your local cloth nappy library to borrow a kit and see what works for you.

Washing: Cloth nappies require more washing -

we can’t deny that - but once you get into the swing of things, it’s not difficult and you’ll soon love the look of those cute little nappies hanging on the line.

Essentially, there are two steps to the washing process: first you need to do some kind of rinse or quick wash. Then a long wash at either 40 or 60 degrees with non-bio washing powder (no fabric conditioner) and that’s it!

You can store them in a nappy bin or wet bag until wash day (Usually every 3 days).

Poo… breastfed poo can get put into the washing machine as its water soluble. Formula fed babies or babies that are having solid foods will need to have poo flushed down the toilet first.

You can get reusable or flushable nappy liners which protect the nappy and make discarding of poo easier.

Cost: The initial outlay is of course more expensive

than a few packs of disposables, but the overall cost of cloth nappies has been proven to be cheaper over time (unless of course you become addicted to the cute prints and want all the new releases!)

You can keep costs down by buying budget nappies (there are some with great reviews) and by buying pre-loved. Reusable wipes are also a brilliant money saver and they clean so much better than disposables!

Being Out and About/Childcare: We both use our

nappy pods which can store 4/5 cloth nappies, wipes, wet bag for dirty nappies and a change of clothes! Put dirty nappies in the wet bag and sort out when you get home.

Have a chat to your childcare providers - lots of nurseries and childminders have experience using cloth nappies and are more than happy to accept them.

Don’t forget: if you use just one cloth nappy each day, you will send about 900 fewer nappies to landfill - so it doesn’t have to be all or nothing!

After they both had their second babies during the pandemic, they realised how the lack of support (due to COVID) was really damaging to parents. Their Instagram page @gentlehealthvisitors aims to solve this by providing information and spreading positivity.

of The importance Ye ars y rl Ea in language A good grasp of language at an early age is crucial for the overall healthy development of a child.

Research consistently shows a high correlation between good language skills in the preschool years and emotional maturity and effective social skills later in later childhood (1). Interestingly, success at school is also heavily dictated by a child’s communication environment and language skills before the age of 2 (2).

It is essential therefore that both family at home and early years staff in childcare settings encourage and support language acquisition in children.

MODELLING GOOD USE OF LANGUAGE WITH YOUR CHILD.

Being a good role model for language development is vital. It can be helpful to pause and consciously think about your body language, your tone and the words you are using. Make sure you fully engage with your child whenever the opportunity arises, demonstrating focus and interest.

Play should be child-led, even if that means play time sometimes heads in a completely different direction to the one you first envisaged! While you are playing try to: • Speak clearly

WHAT IS LANGUAGE?

Many people struggle to come up with a concise definition of language because it covers so many things. It encompasses the words or signs we use to convey meaning, yes, but also the methods used to communicate those words, be they written, spoken or signed - and the cultural context in which they are spoken.

Yet this still does not cover the whole concept of language. Language is not just the spoken or written word, it is the subtle facial expressions and the accompanying hand gestures. It is the tone of voice, and the unspoken, inferred meaning transmitted between people. Language is far more sophisticated than the communication we see in other species: it is the way in which humans share knowledge, make connections, build communities and grow civilisations.

Language starts with a newborn baby’s eye contact, a toothless, gummy smile or a cry of upset.

There are no words, but these movements and noises are a language all of their own, unique to that child and family.

• Make eye contact (get down to the child’s level if necessary) • Repeat sentences back to the child, replacing mistakes with corrections • Repeat sentences back to child, expanding on the vocabulary they have used • Describe and comment on what you are doing Books are a great place to start working on language development. Sharing books with even the youngest of children has huge benefits. From the closeness of sitting on a loved one’s lap while they read and talk about the pictures they can see, to discussing what may happen on the next page; every part of the experience is helping a child to model their language development, whilst also instilling a love of books!

Playing with your child, joining in with their games, building dens, asking open-ended questions… All of these are powerful tools you can use to help your child develop their language skills, which will ultimately have a huge impact on their life to come.

Mother’s Day Craft: Easy Tape Painting

There is so much potential with tape art and it is lots of fun!

Instructions: 1. Prepare all your materials.

2. Decide on your design and cut off strips of masking tape.

3. Press the masking tape down onto the canvas/paper in the pattern or image required, taking care that the edges are firmly stuck down. This will prevent paint from seeping under the edges.

Materials: • Canvas or stiff card • Masking tape • Scissors • Paint (not too watery) • Paint brushes • Sharpies/felt tips (optional) • Glitter (optional)

4. Paint over the entire canvas, including the tape design, as desired.

5. If you would like to add glitter add this whilst the paint is still slightly wet.

6. Once finished, you can lift off the tape straight away or you can let the paint dry first (we found grabbing the masking tape edges with tweezers helped).

7. Use Sharpie/felt tips to draw round the edges of the pattern to make the edges cleaner and help the design stand out.

EASTER EGG CAKE POPS A delicious alternative Easter treat that is fun to make and even better to eat!

Ingredients:

Method:

• 75g margarine • Whisk the margarine and sugar together • 75g caster sugar until creamy • 75g self-raising flour • Add in the eggs • 1 egg and whisk • 1½ tbsps. milk • Fold in the flour • ½ tsp vanilla essence • Add the milk and • Tub of vanilla frosting mix together • 100g bar milk chocolate • Pour into 6 cupcake • 100g bar white chocolate cases and bake for 20 minutes at gas mark 4 • When cool, crumble the cupcakes together • Add enough frosting to the crumbs to make it mouldable • Mould into egg shapes and chill in the fridge for ½ hour

• Coat with melted chocolate • Leave to set in the fridge • Drizzle on melted chocolate and add sprinkles to decorate • Enjoy!
