Steam Train Rides Every Sunday There is a busy line-up of varied events at the Northampton and Lamport Railway over the next few months. The importance of

taking the child’s le ad

When a child suggests an activity, do you jump right in and start giving them step by step instructions on how they can complete the suggested activity? After all, you can assist them to complete their aim. But when you take a moment to think, in reality does this then become your aim? Your activity?

When we assist a child to play, many of us believe our active participation is supporting, helping, and guiding the child. But when we look at the bigger picture… are we really doing these things?

I’m afraid the answer is often no.

By ‘over participating’ we are taking away many valuable life lessons which are paramount in the journey of a child’s growth, development, and life skills. By leaping in and often altering the play to “make it better”, we risk becoming distant, even vacant, accidentally taking away skills such as; independence, working together, the ability to keep on trying, being able to explore, to risk take and think. A child’s development can become restricted when the play becomes structured and directed rather than developing at the pace the child sets.

You could ask questions to extend their learning and take direction from them, following their instructions.

If mistakes are made it doesn’t matter, it’s all about trial and error, being resilient and learning from it.

Questions are beneficial to both the child and the adult, creating conversations and extending the play. At the beginning of the activity you could ask questions such as, ‘What are you going to do now?’

‘How do you think you are going to do it?’ and, ‘Do you need anything to help you achieve your aim?’

During the activity you can be a support by giving them praise and asking questions like, ‘Is it going as planned?’ and, ‘What are you going to do next?’

When the child decides they are finished you can ask them questions like, ‘Did it turn out how you wanted it to?’ ‘What went well?’ and, ‘What would you have done differently?’ But the most crucial part to remember is that it is the process, rather than the finished product, that is important - the learning through trial and error. Nurturing a child’s interests will help them create their own learning through play.

We should strive to allow children to think for themselves, risk take, have adaptability and problem solve. Learning and using these many crucial skills will benefit them later in life in the real world. Therefore it is paramount to think before you act, not to jump straight in with how you think an activity or game should be carried out. Instead, take a step back and gently support the child as they enjoy the process of their activity.

Ways to Encourage Toddler Independence

The “Me Do It” toddler phase can be challenging, but it’s an important developmental time. Our friends at Bright Horizons share five ways to encourage this independence.

The stage between 18 and 36 months will include varying degrees of intensity depending on your toddler’s temperament. This stage comes with challenges such as toddler temper tantrums, which are well known, but try to also see it as a cause for celebration. It shows your child is recognising themselves as separate from others and feels safe and confident enough to take risks.

When children are allowed to try things on their own, they master new skills and build self-esteem.

Allowing your child opportunities to do things independently takes longer than if you helped, but the end results are worth the extra effort.

Tips for encouraging toddler development:

1

Offer reasonable choices when possible.

It’s not always possible, but this is a good time to start picking your battles and it’s important to enable them to feel they have some element of control. For issues you feel you need to challenge, try offering two alternatives, e.g., “You can wear the green shirt or the blue shirt.” This strategy allows you to set appropriate limits, while acknowledging your child’s need to “do it myself.”

Make your home toddler-friendly.

Keep plastic cups and bowls or pots and pans in a low cupboard within your child’s reach. Buy simple trousers or skirts with an elastic waistband instead of poppers and buttons. Place sturdy stools in the bathroom. This helps your toddler become more independent while ensuring safety.

Work together on toddler-friendly activities.

Children have an innate need to contribute.

Toddlers can help with chores and other household activities. Let your toddler pour flour into a batch of cookie dough or buy child-size gardening tools to be used in the garden. This will boost their selfconfidence, which can also increase cooperation.

Add “toddler time” to your daily routine.

Toddlers are notorious dawdlers and can wreak havoc on a tight or well-oiled schedule. Try to build some extra time into your routine to allow for your toddler’s burgeoning independence. You’ll feel more patient and your toddler will feel more in control.

Give clear, simple directions.

Sometimes you must intervene to prevent behaviour problems from developing. In this case, use clear, direct language. Tell your child what you want him to do, rather than what you don’t want him to do, and offer empathy and understanding to reduce toddler tantrums. For example, perhaps your toddler wants to climb the shelves to reach a favourite snack. Say, “This isn’t safe. I will help you.

You can get the bowls from the bottom cupboard.”

It’s only the beginning Your child will continue to navigate between independence and the need for parental security throughout childhood and even into young adulthood. The struggle is normal, healthy, and completely necessary for children to become strong, self-sufficient adults. Your role as a parent is to lead them through by example and guide them with gentle direction, while fostering and maintaining a warm, trusting relationship.

Big Emotions

I remember my son, aged three. It was 4am and he was in the bathroom wailing. ‘The toothpaste looks funny!’ he sobbed as I stumbled out of bed to see what the problem was.

‘The toothpaste’s fine.’ I sighed as I picked him up to take him back to bed.

‘It’s not. I don’t like it!’ He began to yell hysterically.

Young children’s emotions can be big, confusing and, frankly, overwhelming. It might be that they have a particular idea about something or they’ve become hooked into a problem. Rather than face a full meltdown you try to find a fix. You replace one perfectly fine banana with another, you clean an invisible mark from a jumper or scramble around for a different colour lolly. But the emotion simply seems to escalate. The replacement isn’t ‘right’. The colour is still ‘wrong’. The smell is ‘funny’ and ‘not good’.

So how do we help our child through these tricky emotional states? What’s the best way for a parent to respond to the many challenging behaviours that can come alongside them?

As I think back to that 4am toothpaste incident, the thing that helped (once I had tried the ‘there’s nothing wrong’ line), was getting down to his level and simply saying, ‘You feel really upset because the toothpaste looks funny’.

Let me explain why such basic steps create a foundation for trust and ease around a young child’s emotions and how to move through these big emotions with your own child.

The most important thing to know is that young children rely on you to work out their emotions.

Although they often become fixated on a problem or a particular solution, really they are looking to make sense of their emotions through you. You’re the person they trust to learn what’s safe and what isn’t and how they should respond. They need to know that you can bear their emotions, understand what’s going on and guide them through.

Here are five steps to help you when those big, overwhelming emotions arrive:

Model sturdiness and security: Your child’s emotions can feel scary. They can be big and disorientating. They are frantically either trying to take control or becoming overwhelmed and scared.

It’s therefore important that you model sturdiness and security and prioritise keeping your child safe.

You might say: ‘I can see you’re feeling a lot of big feelings. I won’t let you hurt me or damage your toys.

You’re safe here with me.’

Connect with the feelings: When you connect to your child’s feelings, you watch and listen and summarise in very simple terms. Sometimes your child’s upset is understandable, at other times it can be baffling. Either way, by acknowledging their experiences, they trust that you are paying attention. You might say ‘You didn’t want the banana cut,’ or ‘You want me to know that these trousers are the wrong colour’.

Help them process the emotion: You want your child to start to recognise and observe their own feelings, rather than just reacting. To do this, describe an emotion with the word ‘feel’ in front: ‘You feel cross’, or ‘You feel sad and worried’. When you add an emotion word such as cross or sad or worried, your child is more able to observe their own experience. Rather than just reacting, they slowly begin thinking and reflecting.

Guiding your child through: One of the most confusing aspects of parenting a toddler is that they often don’t seem to know what they really want. They want the banana sliced and then they hate it that you’ve sliced it. They wish they could have another ice lolly but then cry when you manage to find one. Trying to fix the problem or offer choices simply leaves them feeling more confused and overwhelmed. When emotions are frantic and confusing, your job is to slow things down and acknowledge and soothe. Although the emotions can be intense, the more sturdy and aware you are, the more effectively they settle.

My final piece of advice is to be kind to yourself.

Helping your child through all of these big emotions can be a bumpy ride. There will be days when it feels easier and days when your energy and focus are being pulled in all directions. Take heart. Your child doesn’t need perfect parenting, she needs good enough and that will mean plenty of mistakes and repairs and do overs, with lots of reflecting and talking. Nothing is more helpful and supportive than this.

When your child struggles with fearful, anxious emotions Although anxiety feels frightening, it’s important to think of it as a normal human emotion. Your job is to help your child learn how to manage it by creating a sense of safety and security whilst helping them work through the feeling.

Here are some ways in which you can support your child:

Slow things down and talk about the feelings/ needs that come up for your child: ‘You feel a bit wobbly’, ‘You want mummy to be near’.

Make sure your movements are gentle and steady and comfortable: Your child picks up on your body language more than your words.

Slower, sturdy movements and simple phrases signal safety.

Find a sweet spot in between trying to push your child to overcome a fear and simply pulling away: This might be helping your child join in with a small action. For example, you could say, ‘You’re really not sure about dogs, let’s do a tiny little wave just so we can find a brave feeling to help you’.

Reflecting later: If your child’s emotions have been large and distressed, it’s helpful to return later, once things have settled, to what happened.

This works best when your child is well rested and fed and everything is settled. The secret here is to give a simple description of what happened.

You could say: ‘Mummy loves you and you felt some really big emotions when we went to playgroup. You felt really cryey and Jessie had to cuddle you and help you say goodbye’. When you talk about things afterwards without tension or judgement, you give your child an extra sense of security. These emotions were tricky but they were okay. Mummy and I can cope. We’re safe.

Later, tell the story of the feeling. Balance describing the worried feeling with the small brave feeling. ‘We saw a dog and you felt wobbly.

So mummy stayed with you and we did a little brave wave to the dog to make us feel a bit better’.

MARBLED JUBILEE CUPCAKES Ingredients

(makes 12)

• 170g margarine • 170g sugar • 3 eggs • 170g self raising flour • Red and blue food colouring

• Icing sugar • Red and blue M&Ms, or similar PLUS: • Paper cake cases • Muffin Tin • Cocktail sticks (to make flags)

Directions 1. Mix together the margarine and sugar in a large bowl (with a wooden spoon or mixer) until smooth and pale in colour.

2. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each.

3. Stir in the flour.

4. Divide mixture into three bowls, add red food colouring to one, blue to another, and leave one uncoloured.

5. Put cake cases into the muffin tray, and put a

spoon of each colour cake mixture into each cake case. (Only fill them half way as they will rise!)

6. Bake in an oven for 15 minutes at 180oC. 7. When cooled, make some icing by mixing icing

sugar with a little water, and spread onto the cakes.

8. Add M&Ms, and print out some flags to stick to
