M

aking decisions is a natural part of life — from deciding what to eat for breakfast to what to wear. These are simple decisions that don’t require much thought, but when you are faced with making a tougher decision, you might choose procrastination over decisiveness.

Do you refrain from writing a will because you don’t want to think about your mortality and would prefer to focus on the present?

Do you avoid scheduling regular doctor appointments for fear of receiving an unsettling diagnosis?

Do you keep living in your home rather than moving because you aren’t fond of change?

Making tough decisions might be painful in the moment but can give you peace of mind and possibly encourage emotional growth. The decisions you do or don’t make can affect those closest to you in either a positive or negative way. Step Up Your Game by Widening Your Social Circle Are you retired and spending your days watching TV or surfing the internet? Studies show that isolation can lead to loneliness, depression, and physical health problems.

One way to increase your social circle and stay active is to participate at one of Louisville’s senior community centers that offers social, nutritional, fitness, recreational, and educational activities for active older adults.

LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES

Participants blossom when they attend the Arthur S. Kling Center, a senior center in Old Louisville, which serves people ages 55 and up. “It’s amazing to see someone come in for the first time, and then six months later, they are a different person,” says Peggy Owens, manager of the center. Peggy says the center averages about 70 visitors a day, with many coming two to five days a week.

“Their attitude changes, the way they carry themselves changes,” Peggy says.

“They get their sense of pride back.

“They hear we serve a hot lunch and that brings them in,” she says. “A lot of them can’t or don’t cook anymore,” she says.

“Once they get here, they see everything else that’s offered — that there is life after retirement. We have speakers talk to them about nutrition and how to prepare small meals at home. We offer activities, arts and crafts, exercise classes, and bingo — which they truly love.

“The Kling Center gives them a reason to get up out of their apartments and be involved in something. They don’t want to be home alone. They love the socialization. They worry about each other. They are like a huge family.”

Stanley Baker, 72, a retiree from Phillip Morris, started coming to the Kling Center nearly five years ago. “I got to see a lot of people that I knew in the past and met a lot of new people,” Stanley says. “I’ve run into people that I haven’t seen in 30 years.”

checkers and cards, and participates in other activities. “I’d probably be sitting at home and eating all day, and playing with my TV remote.

“This is a pretty cool place,” Stanley says. “You come in and have fun and socialize. You do things you wouldn’t normally do sitting at home. If you want to be healthy and have a healthy mind, this is the place. You can’t come in here and say there’s nothing to do. There’s nothing to do because you didn’t want to do anything.

“If you don’t make an effort to do something, you will be the same person.”

MEETING PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE

If you are homebound, there are programs that bring socialization to you.

“Besides the ElderServe Senior Center on 28th Street, we have two programs that aim to help,” says Sarah Irvin, manager of volunteer services at ElderServe.

TeleCare, Sarah says, is a program where “participants receive a phone call from a volunteer every day, Monday through Friday. They have a conversation: ‘How is your day going?’

They have that personal connection with someone every day. A lot of the volunteers who make the calls are seniors themselves. It gives them a sense of purpose.”

Secondly, the Friendly Visitor Program pairs a senior participant with a volunteer who has similar interests. They meet at least twice a month for home visits as well as outings.

“It might be going to lunch, or visiting a museum, or going to the park,” Sarah says.

“You see the same person every month.”

Score High With a Better Living Situation Instead of aging in place, many Baby Boomers are ditching mowing the lawn, replacing the hot water heater, and dusting rooms they no longer use to move to smaller homes, often in senior communities.

“What we hear from a lot of our residents is they see the advantage of not having home maintenance,” says Nicole Candler, chief marketing officer for Masonic Communities Kentucky, a large campus with 700 residents that offers housing from independent living to skilled nursing care. “The maintenance of their home becomes quite a burden for them, and they don’t enjoy doing it anymore.

“They physically may not be able to keep up with housekeeping duties.

Washing windows, vacuuming.

Sometimes, that’s just not how they want to spend their time.

“The big advantage of an aging-care community is the housekeeping and maintenance is taken care of for you,” Nicole says. “Our residents routinely say they wish they would have moved sooner.”

CREATING NEW FRIENDSHIPS

Seniors want to be social. “They find that after a spouse has passed, their social circle has narrowed. Residents can choose the activities they want to participate in. There are people down the hall checking in on you and are available if you need help. Those

connections are more available to you than if you were in your (single family) home.”

The activities are selected to suit the interests of the residents. “We have a resident knitting group,” Nicole says.

“They create wonderfully knit baby clothes and blankets for people who have recently had surgery. So it’s a craft project as well as a community outreach project.”

After a few men said they missed having garages with tools where they could tinker, the facility built a woodworking and craft shop. “It has fabulous tools. The gentlemen of that independent community do projects together. When the facility had to expand its boardroom table, the residents built the extensions.”

PRACTICALITY MATTERS

Residents also say they want to be in charge of when and where they move.

“They want to make that decision while they are still physically able ,” Nicole says. “They don’t want to put their adult children in a tight spot about making that decision.”

They also want to be in charge of deciding what to do with their belongings. “When downsizing, seniors want to decide what things are important and what things aren’t.”

The facility has senior living counselors who help people choose what kind of community would best suit their

needs, whether independent living or skilled nursing care; whether to rent or purchase a condo. “Everyone’s financial situation is different,” Nicole says. “So is the level of service or care they need. We look at what they can afford and what we can do to find additional resources.

“When people make the decision themselves to move to senior living care or an aging-care community, they actually thrive rather than decline.

When they are in the right environment, where they can get the right amount of help, they are happier. They are spending more time doing the things they want. It adds years to their lives.”

Philip Payne, 74, moved from his large, four-bedroom house in Indian Hills into a one-bedroom, assisted living condo at Grove Point in the Masonic Community in early fall.

“I had decided to sell my home where I had been for 40 years. I have children, but they are married, and so I was living in my home by myself,” says Phil, a widower and retired executive with Doe Anderson. “I didn’t need a fourbedroom house anymore.”

The Masonic Community campus is “close to what I love ,” Phil says. “It worked out great that I could find a place that I was familiar with.

“The residents are interesting people.

I have already made a lot of friends. I’m quite pleased with everything that I’ve found here.”

Roll The Dice on Trying Long-Term Care Insurance The odds are high that you will need help with daily living care. “About 70 percent of us will need some form of long-term care,” says Eugene “Buster” Kenny, a long-term care consultant with New York Life.

The costs “can put a big dent in or completely deplete a person’s savings, depending on how long it is needed,” Buster says. In Kentucky, healthcare costs can range from $30,000 a year for four hours of daily care at $20 an hour, and up to $80,000 a year for skilled nursing home care, he says.

“People typically purchase longterm care insurance to protect their retirement savings and retirement income, and to protect the family from providing the hands-on care,” he says.

Clients typically buy policies to offset only part of their risk and then use Social Security, other income, and savings to supplement their care.

“Long-term care insurance policies today can cover any type of care, whether you are staying at home, in a memory care unit, or at a skilled nursing home,” Buster says.

Long-term care policies helped his parents to pay for healthcare costs.

“I started talking to my dad and stepmom for years before they purchased a policy, and every year, I had to talk him into renewing it.”

His stepmom’s policy covered only 50 percent of the risk, $3,000 a month for seven years, Buster says. His dad had set up a $500,000 trust for her. So the Kenny’s supplemented the cost of his stepmom’s care with $1,400 a month in Social Security and pulled the rest out of the trust account until the policy was exhausted. Now the trust still has over $350,000 in it for his stepmom’s care.

“If Dad hadn’t purchased the policy, there wouldn’t be any money left in the trust and she would be on Medicaid,” Buster says.

OTHER OPTIONS

There are new policies to fit people’s needs.

“The most popular version is a hybrid life insurance policy that has a longterm care rider built into it,” Buster says. “You can get significant leverage for long-term care, and also create a death benefit. Most policies come with a money-back guarantee. You can get 80 to 100 percent back if you decide to walk away someday.”

For example, a healthy female 55 years of age, could turn $100,000 in the bank into a policy worth $179,000 in death benefit, and $537,000 in long-term care, Buster says. At age 65, $100,000 would give you $122,000 in death benefit and $366,000 in long-term care.

Another option is a life insurance policy with an added long-term care rider. This allows you to access all but $10,000 of the death benefit while you are alive to help pay for long-term care.

The rider would cost only an additional 4 to 5 percent of the total premium.

A hybrid long-term care annuity is another option. This product provides double the amount of purchase for long-term care. For instance, if you put $100,000 into a long-term care annuity, you would have $200,000 to spend on long-term care.

Most people will never go to a nursing home, Buster says. “Eighty percent of all care starts in the home, and 50 percent of people never leave their homes,” he says. “Only 30 percent will go to assisted living. You don’t need to insure 100 percent of the risk. A little bit of longterm care insurance goes a long way. My stepmom’s experience is a great example of that.”

Before You Cash In Your Chips, Write a Will Preparing a will seems to be the hardest task for people to check off the list of important things to do. Many people don’t think they have enough assets, or they can’t face their mortality, or they think it’s too complicated.

Aretha Franklin, Prince, and other famous people have died without wills.

Their estates will be tied up in the state courts for years and will cost a lot of money in taxes and fees, and it will be confusing to unravel who the deceased wanted to have their assets. Here’s the thing, without a will — your small estate will have the same problems.

DON’T HAVE A WILL? HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT:

“Most people are surprised to learn that if someone dies without a will and they have children, the assets will go to their children and not to their spouse,” says Eileen Walsh, an elder law attorney and owner/partner of Elder Law of Louisville. “Kentucky determines the order of persons who will inherit from

you if you do not sign a will,” Eileen says. “Kentucky statute lists the people who will inherit in the following order: children, parents of the deceased, siblings, and then the spouse. However, a spouse is entitled to a statutory share and can seek the right to half of it. ” Having a will has nothing to do with the value of your assets, Eileen emphasizes. “It’s important to sign a will so you decide who will inherit from you,” she says. “Otherwise, the state will determine it for you.”

JOINT PROPERTY IS DIFFERENT

“If someone owns joint property, the deed will say the surviving spouse will automatically become the owner of the house,” Eileen says. “So it’s important to know how assets (bank accounts, cars, boats, etc.) are owned and titled.”

But if not held jointly, those assets don’t automatically go to the surviving spouse.

“For the majority of people, not having a will can be dangerous to their families,” says Lee Cave, an estate planning attorney. “I tell people: ‘Everyone has an estate plan.’ They say, ‘No, I don’t. I haven’t even been to a lawyer.’ And I say, ‘The state has one for you. It’s the government default plan.’

“And the government plan is not good for most people,” he says. “Your estate probably won’t go to the people you want it to.

You need to write your own plan to get it to the people you want,” Lee says.

YOU CANNOT DISINHERIT YOUR SPOUSE

“Whether there is a will or not, if you leave less than half of your estate to your spouse, the surviving spouse can go to the judge and say I want my marital half,” Lee says.

But, “if you die without a will and your spouse ends up with half and the children get half, that’s still probably not the way you want it. You meant for your spouse to get it all. She and the children may need it to live on. If the children are minors, the money is locked up until they are 18. It can’t even be used to raise them.”

Bypassing a will with beneficiary designations can help.

“There is a big exception to all of this,” Lee says. “Wills don’t control everything.

A lot of people die and their wills are irrelevant because they have beneficiary designations on their accounts. It takes the place of your will.

“A will does not control checking accounts, savings, retirement, and other accounts with beneficiary designations.”

KEEP BENEFICIARIES UP-TO-DATE

“In my seminars, one of the first stories I tell is about a man with a will who left everything to his two kids equally. The wife died first. He had put his children as beneficiaries on all his savings. But he lost track of who got what. He had his daughter designated on some and son on others and didn’t keep them equal. His family fell apart,” Lee says.

“That happens all the time. As we get older, it’s harder to keep track of paperwork. If you use beneficiaries to handle your estate, they have to be upto-date and say what you want them to say. When working with a client, we go over them so they don’t mess up their estate plan unintentionally.

“Most clients don’t even know if they have a beneficiary or aren’t entirely sure who’s listed as the beneficiary,” Lee says. “I had a married man who was divorced three different times. He had two kids. He had a life insurance policy that had his first wife as the beneficiary.”

The surviving spouse didn’t receive the insurance.

“You can set secondary or contingent beneficiaries,” Lee explains. “You can say, ‘I want my children, or if one of them dies, their children to inherit.’ Or you can say, ‘My primary beneficiary is my spouse; my secondary are my two children equally.’ ” DON’T CREATE PROBLEMS

The more common problem is, “Mom wants to make it easy on the family when she dies. She’s got two daughters.

She puts one daughter on her bank account as a co-owner to help her out with bills. She doesn’t mean to disinherit the other children. She thinks: ‘When I die, this daughter can divide it.’ Most people think the will trumps everything.

But, a beneficiary designation (like bank accounts) trumps the will,” he says. “The daughter is not required to share the money.” As a co-owner or beneficiary, the daughter would inherit it all.

“You need a will, but you can make it easier on your family by making beneficiary designations. If it’s a cash account like at a bank, it’s Pay on Death.

For an IRA, it’s Transfer on Death.

They are considered by lawyers as a will substitute,” he says.

THINK AHEAD

When Linda’s mother Gwen first wrote her will 30 years ago, it was a basic will, mostly designating who would inherit her modest assets. Gwen, now 86, has lost her husband, her son, a close cousin, and other relatives.

Her surviving child, Linda, who retired to take care of her mom, is 62 and single with no children. They are the last of the line of their family.

“When we updated Mom’s will last year, it was a much different process than when she was 56,” Linda says. “At 56, you are thinking about others. You want your children to be taken care of.

Mom didn’t even think about a living will.

“But, as an older person, you are thinking about yourself,” Linda says, “about a living will and the directives, and the estate planning.

“I did my will too. She has me, but I don’t have a me.”

The two women checked off boxes for medical directives, such as not wanting to be resuscitated, Linda said.

But other decisions were actually harder. “How do I want to spend my senior years if I’m not able to take care of myself and my primary care giver is not around?” Linda and Gwen pondered. “Who will care for me and what will that look like?

“I know my mom, and what foods she likes. A caretaker would not know that. How do I ensure that her routine continues, that she gets the same care that I have given her?” So, they wrote out what they would want a caretaker to help them with, such as enjoying being outdoors, reading, listening to music, what they like to eat, etc.

“We had to think about everything, like finding a healthcare surrogate,” Linda says. “I had never thought about that and what would be involved to ask

a friend to do that. A lot of my friends are my age. The first couple of people actually said, ‘No.’ I never thought somebody would say that.”

Who would get their stuff? “We don’t have anybody to leave anything to,” Linda says. “Mom has a classical guitar that she’s had for over 30 years. Who wants that when we are gone? Who do we leave things to? What charity do we want to support?”

They even planned who would take care of their 15-year-old cat. “What friends do I have that would be willing to take care of her?

“Those decisions required more thought and were not necessarily sad, but making them wasn’t easy.”

They also had to plan their own funerals.

As for writing your own will, Linda says, “People say you can do a will online. No. Get somebody who knows what they're doing. Get an attorney who deals with seniors. You owe it to yourself to have a professional do this with you.”

Don’t let your will sit untouched for years in a safety deposit box. “Change happens,” says Linda, who had to make an update because her original executor just moved to another state. “It’s important to review your will at least once every three years.”

Wayne Perkey For 30 years, many Louisvillians woke to the voice of Wayne Perkey, host of WHAS Radio’s "Morning Team.” He also served as host of the WHAS Crusade for Children for 20 years. Wayne retired from radio in 1999 and now works as a realtor at WR Realtors while also making personal speaking appearances. He is a member of the National Speakers Association.

How did you get started in radio?

While attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, a friend suggested we audition for the campus radio station. I got the job. It wasn’t until a few years later that I really considered radio as a career for myself.

What were your plans?

I thought I'd be a lawyer.

My uncle was a judge advocate in the U.S. Air Force, and he lived all over the world. I thought that was very glamorous.

What trait contributed to your success?

I'm a stream-ofconsciousness kind of person. I take info in and keep it moving. I think that lends itself to radio.

Jellico, Tennessee, got married, but didn’t tell their families. Someone saw my mother get off the bus when they returned and told her father, and the secret was out.

What is a skill every man should have?

Learn to balance your checkbook.

Advice to a younger you?

Get your college degree.

Favorite family story?

My dad met my mom where she was working at the corner drug store in Clinton, Tennessee. They started dating and eventually eloped. They went up to 18

I try to pay attention and listen to people I respect and whose opinions I value.

How did you survive in the entertainment industry?

Worst job?

I got really lucky. I was never a specialist, always a generalist. For a few years I worked as a rock and roll DJ, but at 26 decided I couldn't do that forever. I took a job in Mobile, Alabama, where I was a radio personality and did the news and weather. I moved to Louisville when there were only three radio stations in the market. WHAS was looking to start a morning show, and I was hired for that. We created its format of news and information.

After my freshman year at the University of Tennessee, I came home for the summer to Lake City, Tennessee, and went to work for the city sanitation department as a garbage man. I lasted two weeks.

How do you know when to walk away?

When you don't fit where you are anymore.

How do you keep your spirits up?

I'm naturally an optimistic guy. I expect things to work out, and I'm surprised if they don't.

This cute corner bistro serves a fine mix of Italian and Southern fare. I tried the Fried Green Tomato BLT and was not disappointed. Of course, any meal that includes bacon is a treat. hanks to technology, the world is now literally at our fingertips. With a simple swipe, touch, or tap of a finger on a smartphone screen we can text, email, surf the web, and amuse ourselves with games and videos from any location. Increasingly, touchscreen technology is becoming the standard in cars as well, replacing dashboard dials and knobs, connecting us to navigation services, and syncing with our phones while on the go. All of these screens rely on sensors that react to our skin’s ability to conduct electric signals, which is why they don’t work if you’re wearing gloves. Luckily, there are simple solutions that help you stay in touch in colder weather while keeping your fingers toasty warm.

Conductive thread

Smartphone-compatible gloves in a variety of styles, materials, and levels of warmth are widely available. Strategically placed conductive fibers woven into the material or conductive patches sewn onto the fingertips let you use technology without having to take off your gloves. Most brands are conductive at the tips of the index finger and thumb, but some offer whole-hand conductivity as well as rubberized grips on the fingers and palms.

If you don’t want to part with your favorite pair of gloves, or need to use specialty gloves for work or recreation, you can give them a DIY tech boost by sewing on knobs or patches of conductive thread. Figure out which parts of your fingers you use to make contact with your device and get sewing.

Just make sure you leave tails of thread on the inside of the glove so your fingers make contact with the conductive material. Reputable brands of conductive thread include Adafruit and SparkFun, and online tutorials on YouTube and other sites will walk you through the process.

Get a Workout on the Dance Floor

R

emember Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing their way through a 1940s Hollywood musical? Or how about a waltz in a glittering ballroom? Or swing dancing to the big band sounds of Tommy Dorsey? Who says age has to stop you from dancing?

Ann Marie Werner, manager of Bravo Dance Studio, says young and old alike can enjoy a turn around the dance floor with a little practice.

“Whether you want to just be able to dance at your daughter's wedding reception and not seriously injure someone, or you want to dazzle your friends with your Dancing With the Stars moves, we have you covered,” Werner says. “We tailor our instruction to the skill level and goals of each dancer. We also offer group classes for all levels.”

Werner’s studio teaches ballroom, Latin, swing, and salsa dancing.

A variety of other studios and community centers in Louisville offer additional styles as well.

“The best exercise plan is one that doesn't feel like exercising,” Werner says. “If it makes you happy and you look forward to it, then that's something that you'll stick with. And dance classes are especially fun because they are low impact, so you're not thinking about exercising, and you meet the most interesting people.”

Werner says the biggest psychological hurdle many new students face is their fear that they’re uncoordinated.

“Generally, that's not even the case,” Werner says. “It's just that no one has ever taught them how to dance. I mean, really broken it down into steps and music. Once we do that, everyone can dance.

That's the beauty of it, no one came out of the womb ballroom dancing.”

Werner says dancing also provides mental exercise. “Dancing is very technical,” she says. “It keeps your mind sharp as you're putting all the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle in your brain.”

Know Where Your Wallet or Purse Is

If you are shopping, be sure you have your wallet or purse with you at all times. Fowler says older adults are frequently targeted at grocery stores. “Someone will say, ‘Can you help me in the pasta aisle?’ and when the person returns to her cart, her purse is gone,” he says. Shopping with an over-theshoulder bag might be a better idea than keeping your purse in the cart.

afety may become more of a concern as people age for a number of reasons. If you are an adult child, maybe you notice a loved one is having more frequent “senior moments.” If you are a senior, maybe you are now alone at home after the passing of a spouse.

Maybe you have gotten a smartphone and are figuring out how to keep your online information as safe as possible. With the help of Paul Fowler, an LMPD detective with the Crimes Against Seniors Unit, our top 10 list will hopefully give you some new strategies and tools to consider to keep yourself as safe as possible.

2 Don’t Open Email From People You Don’t Know

A common email scam sends a virus in an attachment. When that attachment is opened, it locks up a person’s computer, and often the only way to “free” the device is to pay a ransom. If an email comes from someone you don’t know, delete it.

Avoid Unsolicited Offers

If someone comes to the door asking if your roof needs to be repaired or your driveway needs to be sealed, Fowler urges people not to hire them. He says it is best to not make quick decisions about any kind of home repair or improvement. If work needs to be done at your home, get referrals from people you know and trust, rather than simply hiring someone who comes to your door and who may take your money and not do a good job — or do the job at all.

Whether you use a computer or a smartphone, it is a good idea to have some kind of password manager, which not only keeps your passwords within easy reach even when you’re not at home but can automatically update your passwords the moment you change them. Over the years, motion sensing lights have gotten cheaper and easier to install, and there are now motion sensing light bulbs. These are an easy-to-use tool that can act as a deterrent to real human threats or even pesky nocturnal animals.

Scammers frequently use the power of fear to get their victims to do what they want. They may leave a voice message stating that the IRS or the police wish to speak with you.

Know that the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages, or social media platforms; it initiates most contact through the U.S. Postal Service regular mail, and it never demands immediate payment.

If a message is left regarding the police, do not call the number that was left on your voicemail; instead, call LMPD at its non-emergency number (502.574.7111).

Lock Your Car Doors

Everyone, regardless of age, needs to remember to lock their car doors, especially if they don’t park in a locked garage every night. Many car break-ins are opportunity thefts: the thief tries a car door, finds it unlocked, and takes the opportunity to steal whatever is in the car. In many cases, a thief will not break a window.

10 Get Caller ID on Your Phone

If you don’t have caller identification on your landline phone, it is probably a good idea to contact your telephone provider and add the service to your plan. Fowler says even with caller ID, it is a good idea to still be wary, especially if the caller says he is from “customer service.” If you do answer the phone, remember to never give out personal information, such as Social Security numbers or credit card numbers.

It attributed the increase to reluctance on the part of older adults and their physicians to ask for or suggest STD screening, increased use of medications to maintain sexual function, and the belief that since pregnancy isn’t possible there isn’t a need to use a condom.

Do you have difficulty climbing up 10 steps or walking one-quarter of a mile, or have you had to modify how you accomplish either one? “Spending 5 to 10 minutes a day performing exercises that increase blood flow and improve range of motion in the major joints of the body are a good way to enhance your mobility,” says Mike Jett, instructor at the University of Louisville. A recent report in Psychology Today states that “60-70 percent of adults over the age of 65 report episodes of persistent pain." In his practice, Dr. John Baird of Rejuv Medical finds that as estrogen levels decline with menopause, cartilage loss accelerates in joints, leading to arthritis pain. “Men have the same thing occur as they lose testosterone,” Baird adds. To help patients overcome chronic pain, Baird recommends alternative therapies like acupuncture, cold laser therapy, hormone replacement, massage therapy, and stem cell therapy. Movement-based alternatives like physical therapy, yoga, Pilates, tai chi, and warm water exercise can be beneficial as well, he said.

Prevent Cavities Dry mouth is a side effect of over 500 common medications, according to MouthHealthy, a website of the American Dental Association. Besides being irritating, it also increases your risk of developing cavities. If you notice your mouth is drier after starting a new medication, consult with your doctor to see if the medication or dosage can be changed. If that’s not possible, start using an over the counter oral moisturizer, drink more water, keep sugar-free gum or candy around to stimulate saliva production, and use alcoholfree mouthwashes.

SHOE HAZARD (IF THEY'RE FLAWED, YOU'LL FALL) The American Physical Therapy Association lists inappropriate footwear as a risk factor for falls in the older adult. To limit your risk, avoid slip-on and backless shoes without fasteners.

Instead choose styles that support your ankles, have non-slip soles, and a low, square heel no greater than one inch in height. Also if you frequently have swollen feet and ankles, investigate footwear specifically designed for these conditions.

Membership has evolved over the years and still includes a few of the original members. Books are chosen at the end of each meeting for the following month, alternating between fiction and non-fiction and including at least one classic each year. Anyone can start the discussion, and the conversations are always lively. Linda and Chris Valentine, members of the group for the past eight years, discussed their thoughts on a recent selection, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Beginnings of the FBI by David Grann.

What have you learned from this book?

Journalist David Grann has written a disturbing, informative account of the Osage Indians. In the 1920s, they were the richest per capita people in the world due to the oil reserves under the seemingly barren Oklahoma reservation to which they had been relegated. The oil turned out to be a curse. One by one many were killed. Their wealth was fraudulently taken. Public officials, doctors, trustees, and even one white husband were the culprits in what Grann has called a culture of killing. J. Edgar Hoover saw the opportunity to gain national attention for his new FBI, as agents uncovered a number of the perpetrators.

If you could hang out with a character, who would it be and why?

Tom White, Texas Ranger, was the hero. He led a complex effort with undercover agents using new methods of investigation. They successfully solved a number of crimes.
