ON THE

CATWALK WHAT’S HOT FROM THE BRIDAL FASHION RUNWAYS Designers are pulling out all the stops this season, with stunning, ethereal creations and modern yet elegant takes on the quiet luxury and elevated minimalism trends. Runways were also a beautiful blur of heightened romance, vintage references and the strength of femininity meeting architectural edginess.

Romance When THEIA Bridal (this page) presented its Autumn 2024 collection, softness and romance were the key elements. Old-world corsetry, rich, bias-cut satins and luxe crepe fabrics mixed with details like transparent organza lace, asymmetrical back drapes and clever keyhole cut-outs.

Modern Perspective

Devotion

At Ines Di Santo’s Fall 2024 presentation, the designer says that an artistic study of our relationship between architecture and the ever changing urban landscapes that surround us was the inspiration. Transparent layers over frameworks of corsetry create new voluminous shapes and silhouettes; translucent beaded accents shine, adding texture and dimension.

At Nadia Manjarrez Bridal, the designer’s own wedding in Mexico informed her direction. Cascading applique flowers and 3D floral veils; silk organza gowns with contrasting black floral embroidery reminiscent of the black grisaille paint used in stained glass, as do seams, particularly in corsets, to create lines like the unexpected breaks in stained glass.

Nardos

Dreams by Lihi Hod

Flowers were everywhere, and designers Esé Azénabor, Dreams by Lihi Hod, and Nardos, all leaned into natural and floral inspo. “I’ve named my fall 2024 collection ‘Blossom’ because each piece celebrates the shapes and textures of flowers in full blossom,” says Azénabor. Drawing from the quiet elegance of nature, The “Petals” collection from Dreams by Lihi Hod is an homage to the delicate beauty yet evocative power of floral allure. For Nardos Imam, it was all about timeless beauty “I drew inspiration from the texture and blossoming essence of a bride’s journey down the aisle.”

Old-World Elegance Old-World Elegance: Paying tribute to regal femininity and old-world elegance, Reem Acra blended couture styling with intricate yet unassuming designs: “our signature elegant simplicity.” The extras: short dresses, trains, jackets, detachable hoodies, boleros, gloves, and even belts. Highlights included “Refined” – the 3D handmade flowers are the same flowers that adorned the very first wedding dress ever made by the designer.

Separates and Multiple Looks in One

Reem Acra

According to Justin Warshaw, creative director of Justin Alexander Group, “Brides are looking for more than one ‘look’ for their wedding day and a way for bridal designers to address this, is the arrival of separates. Detachable trains, skirts, capes and sleeves offer brides two looks within one dress, transforming a gown from a demure day look to a more relaxed evening look.”

HOW S W E ET Whether Princess Bride or Ice Queen, or a bit of both, these three weddingday beauty looks inspired by the idea of modern fairytales are easy to achieve.

NATURAL BEAUTY BROWS A shaped brow makes the eyes the focal point here: a slather of black mascara, neutral eyeshadow and lips are all this look needs. Loose curls are kept in check with smooth centre-parted strands tucked behind the years. P.S. The removable sleeves on this gorgeous gown make it two looks in one.

GLAMOUR LIP SERVICE

The classic red lip plays perfectly off a side-parted Hollywood starlet hairstyle. Note the soft pink eyeshadow paired with dark lashes; subtle without taking the focus away from the power pout. Keep the styling simple with a slender drop earring.

One of the prettiest ways to enhance all skin tones is to go with peachy pink hues on eyes, cheeks and lips. Add a bit of drama with eyeliner, pull back hair in a tight bun, and frame the face with a few loose tendrils to keep it on the soft side.

Misty Mountain Magic

Call it love at first sight. The meetcute with Joshua happened during Paige’s workplace orientation tour. Seven years and two sons later, the intrepid couple didn’t let a bit of rain stop them from tying the knot in adventurous style.

While Paige and Joshua Bullock live in Edmonton, they decided the romantic mountain backdrop of Canmore would be the ideal wedding venue, having been a favourite travel spot with family.

“I have always had the dream of a helicopter mountain wedding and once we realized we could bring our family along it was a no-brainer,” said Paige.

The plan was to fly 20 guests to the mountaintop but Mother Nature had something else in mind, drenching everything in heavy rain. Despite the weather, Alpine Helicopters still managed to get everyone safely up the mountain. Surrounded by nature’s drama, the couple said their vows at the top. It wasn’t just the venue that was picturesque, the meal was also spectacular. Guests got to choose between brie and cranberry stuffed chicken breast, New York steak, or potato-crusted salmon followed by decadent desserts. It was an intimate wedding day filled with love and joy.

When we first started planning our wedding, one of our goals was to enjoy the process and stress as little as possible!” says Ashley Shum about her big day with now husband Nicolas Ivanov. “One of the things that helped the most was starting early, especially since we did not have a wedding planner.” For those brides without wedding planners, paper/book planners are super useful, advises Ashley. It can be understandably daunting in the beginning, she adds, but if you break it down and make a list of all the vendors you will need and go through them one at a time, it makes it feel more manageable. "This wedding was the perfect Vancouver summer wedding,” says Eunice Kwok, of Chuunice Photography. “The bride loves flowers and House of Fiori expertly created standing ceremony markers that were later repurposed for the head table centerpieces.” The ceremony arch was also later placed behind the stage as a backdrop to the reception, she adds. “And Hart House has a permanent tent for events that's perfect for an outdoor wedding (with beautiful chandeliers!), and some of the best wedding food I've ever had.”

One piece of advice Ashley and Nick would give is to have a discussion early about priorities. Each person picks their top three priorities for the wedding and through these lists it can help figure out what you’re not willing to sacrifice. “We didn’t feel having a big wedding cake was a priority because of the costs and also the prospect of having a lot of it go to waste. We decided on a small cake for the top tier, and cupcakes and donuts on the lower tiers and around the table, which turned out beautifully and nothing went to waste!” Ashley also suggests couples not to be too pressured by “wedding traditions” or things having to be done a certain way. “This is your wedding!” It should be what the two of you want and be special to you, she says.

“Our last piece of advice is don't be afraid of leaning on the support of your families and wedding party. There is so much going on, and those closest to you are happy to help out, so ask for it to keep yourselves sane and enjoy the big day!".

LOVE STORIES Romeo and Juliet, Cleopatra and Mark Antony, Katie and Alex. When Katie Stemmler met her prince, they decided to get married, and were inspired by some of the most passionate romances in history to create their own whimsical fairytale wedding.

“We chose Erin Estate in Ontario because we fell in love with the very unique ceremony space – in the forest with a stream running through it,” says Katie. “We loved that the venue incorporated our love of nature and the outdoors, but it also fit our “fairytale theme” with its old world charm feel, especially the Tudor style bridal sweet modeled after a 14th century castle in the UK.” For 115 guests, the fairytale wedding ceremony was indeed magical. “The intimate and unique space was very special, where we could hear the stream running while we shared our personally written vows,” says Katie. During the reception, guests had to find their “Great Love Story,” to find their seat: “Instead of table numbers, we named tables after Great Love Stories (Romeo and Juliet,

Cleopatra and Mark Antony, Jack and Rose, Johnny and June, etc) to go with the fairytale theme,” she adds. The couple made their reception entrance on a goft cart modelled after a 1920s Rolls Royce. with tin cans and ribbons on the back. “That felt very special!” says Katie. “Plus, we had an amazing live five-piece band and our wedding favours were custom guitar picks and plantable seed paper hearts.” Dinner included striploin steak and Caesar salad, grilled pesto chicken and mushroom risotto, finished off with warm apple and peach crumble. And for a personal touch, the couple named one of their signature cocktails, the Oli-Bear elderflower G&T, after their beloved dog, Olive.

TODAY’S BRIDE: Your top tip

to the couple when deciding on a destination wedding?

CONSIDERING A DESTINATION WEDDING? We asked Daniela Ocampo Morales of Palladium Hotel Group for her expert take on where to consider tying the knot – and even book your honeymoon.

DANIELA OCAMPO MORALES:

Effective communication stands as a paramount piece of advice for couples contemplating a destination wedding. It is imperative to engage in open and thorough discussions with your partner regarding budgets, expectations, and ideas. Clear communication lays the foundation for a harmonious planning process and helps both partners feel confident and excited about the decisions made for their destination wedding.

ith its natural beauty, warm and welcoming culture, delicious cuisine and rich musical heritage, this Caribbean jewel has all the ingredients for a dream wedding. From incorporating local traditions, such as “jumping the broom,” which symbolizes sweeping away the old and welcoming in the new as a married couple, to food and entertainment that features local chefs, artists and dancers, there are plenty of ways to add a touch of Jamaican culture into your special day.

But don’t just take it from us. Jamaica is consistently recognized as a top honeymoon destination by Canadian travel agents. For this issue, we are putting the spotlight on Jamaica as a top romance destination. We asked two experts, Shalene Dudley, lead travel concierge and certified destination wedding planner at Latitude Concierge Travels in Oakville, On., and Angella Bennett, regional director, Canada, of the Jamaica Tourist Board, to share the reasons why they both love Jamaica as a wedding destination.

The Romance Guide | MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

Is it easy to get married in Jamaica? What if the couple decides to elope?

SHALENE: I always recommend Jamaica for the culture, food, hospitality, and warm, year-round tropical climate. Travel is extremely easy as there are multiple carriers flying to the island everyday. The beaches are unique and stunning! There is a diverse range of resorts and venues for any type of wedding.

ANGELLA: Getting married in Jamaica

What is it about Jamaica that makes you passionate to share it as a romantic destination? SHALENE: The atmosphere – whether it be the sunsets, the crystal-clear water, the lush landscapes, waterfalls and gardens. There is a wonderful combination of natural beauty, laid back charm, and culture. There are so many activities to choose from to be alone with your partner and celebrate one another or declare your love before your family and friends! ANGELLA: Jamaica is a destination

synonymous with romance. Couples from around the world have chosen the island as their preferred destination for weddings, honeymoons, elopements, proposals, and romantic getaways. Jamaica is a place where visitors can reignite their passion while making memories together. From young lovers to old flames, the destination offers something for couples at every stage of life – world-class hotels, exciting excursions, sensuous spa treatments, gourmet dining options, and beautiful scenic landscapes that makes for a picture-perfect vacation backdrop.

is a smooth and seamless process; the country offers an impressive infrastructure of resources to provide couples with everything they need to tie the knot – even if it’s last minute! Couples can be married within 24 hours of arrival on the island, and applying for a marriage license is a simple process that requires minimal cost and documentation. In addition to our all-inclusive resort properties, there are incredible private villas and unique event venues for bespoke personalized wedding ceremonies and receptions. Couples can also take advantage of a network of experienced wedding planners and industry suppliers. From tailors and chefs to musicians and florists, Jamaica is brimming with talented local vendors.

Do you also recommend Jamaica as a honeymoon destination? SHALENE: Absolutely! With proper planning, there are so many hidden gem properties on the island and destinations many do not explore that can offer a couple their perfect blend of adventure, culture, romance and solitude. ANGELLA: On Jamaica’s western

coastline, Negril offers a more laidback vibe than the tourist hotspots of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. The region is a favourite for honeymooners, thanks to its pristine white sand beaches, dramatic cliff sides, and beautiful sunset

views. For couples looking for a truly secluded and intimate getaway, Port Antonio is one of my favourite regions of the island. Tucked away between the Blue Mountains and the Caribbean Sea, it is a hidden gem that’s popular with celebrities thanks to its VIP boutique hotels and off-the-beaten-path villas. Honeymooning couples can also enjoy a variety of eco-chic attractions like guided bamboo rafting on the Rio Grande River and swimming in the spring-fed waters of the Blue Lagoon.

And beyond wedding/honeymoon clients, do you recommend Jamaica as a destination, particularly for couples? SHALENE: I can find something for everyone in Jamaica. Whether the couple wants an adventure-filled trip, a spa vacation, or a private villa, I can find multiple options for them. There are varied levels of resorts, hotels and villas to choose from. Excursions, tours and activities are accessible from each area, can be unique and have options for every budget. visitjamaica.com
