Love Story

PUBLISHER Gerald Kinasz

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then certainly couples who choose to capture their big day – whether on film, digital devices, disposable cameras or video – have a wealth of storytelling moments that travel with them through their lives together. Each tale of romance takes its own shape, guided by the heart. That same heart may beat a little more quickly when we’re in love. It may even skip a beat. The feel-good aura that surrounds those who are confident in their feelings for each other, enough to commit to the possibility of a lifetime of love, is a condition of happiness that needs no cure. We receive dozens of emails every week from across the world from happy couples, brilliant wedding planners and wonderful photographers, all who have chronicled the wedding day, complete with funny anecdotes and photographs – and even insight into how it all worked out beautifully. Advice from experience, we think, is worth its weight in bouquets. At Today’s Bride, we’re honoured that you would share your love story and love the idea that, in a small way, we’re active players keeping these special memories alive in our pages and on our website, todaysbride.ca. To paraphrase from the enduring love story of The Notebook, we are who we are because of you.

TENDER LOVING (Skin)CARE A GUIDE TO SUPPORTING SKIN WITH TIME, LOVE AND CARE TO HELP MANAGE BREAKOUTS AND FEEL CONFIDENT ON THE BIG DAY BY LUCY MAZZUCCO

etween decision fatigue and various pressures, it’s common for brides and grooms to experience breakouts during the wedding planning stage. For many adults, acne is a common occurrence, despite the misconception that it only happens to teenagers. “Adult acne has become a very common problem in the last decade. This is when people in their 20s, 30s and 40s develop acne or have worsening of their pre-existing acne,” says Dr. Allison Sutton, MD, FRCPC, board-certified dermatologist and medical director and founder of West Dermatology in Vancouver, BC. “Some of the factors that increase your risk of getting acne as an adult are mild hormonal imbalances, genetic factors, stress, changes in skincare products and procedures.”

Routine Reset

Black and white photography, Emma Haidar

The Why Dr. Sutton says mild hormonal imbalances and Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), formerly known as PCOS, can trigger acne, especially deep, painful cysts on the lower face, jawline and temples. “Working with your physician to stabilize your hormones with an oral contraceptive pill and/or oral spironolactone can often be important,” she says, adding that using a skincare regimen that is anti-acne, anti-comedogenic and non-irritating is crucial. While Dr. Sutton finds that hormonal therapies are extremely effective against the deep cystic component of this type of acne, she says topical agents such as salicylic and glycolic acid, retinol or retinoids can also help remove congestion and improve texture, glow and radiance. “Never underestimate the importance of a personalized skincare regimen for this condition. It’s critical!” She suggests picking a moisturizer that is non-comedogenic and made for acne-prone skin – and never forgetting sunscreen. “Most of the products used to treat and prevent acne can make a person more sun-sensitive, so sunscreen on a day-to-day basis is key. It will also help to lessen discolouration left by acne lesions.”

While adult acne and breakouts related to hormonal imbalances may feel daunting ahead of a wedding, there are actionable steps that brides and grooms can take. Both Dr. Sutton and Dr. Benjamin Barankin, Toronto dermatologist and medical director and founder of Toronto Dermatology Centre, suggest seeing a dermatologist at least six months in advance. “There are now many terrific topical cream options,” says Dr. Barankin, adding that retinol, vitamin C, glycolic acid, AHAs and azelaic acid can all help improve skin texture and tone. Dr. Sutton emphasizes that treatments take time to work, and that skin needs to adjust to new medications and skincare products. However, she often sees improvements in her patients at the onemonth mark. “If someone is doing well at three months, they’ll likely continue improving over the next three months if they stick with the same treatment. So, the more time you have, the better,” she says. Dr. Sutton also cautions against using oils

t o d a y ’s B E A U T Y and oil-based products, which can lead to blackheads and whiteheads. “Makeup is another common factor that clogs skin. So, if you are prone to clogging or mild acne, then choosing mineral-based makeup is the safest choice.” For brides and grooms experiencing an acne flare-up close to the big day, Dr. Sutton suggests spot-treating the pimple with topical benzoyl peroxide gel, which can be used up to twice a day and helps dry out pimples and decrease inflammation. “If you have a really deep or painful cyst, these can be injected by your dermatologist with some corticosteroid to quickly shrink them and take down the inflammation,” she says.

Honeymoon Prep Keratosis Pilaris, which is sometimes referred to as “chicken skin,” can also be a concern for some during wedding season. However, Dr. Sutton says it is an extremely common skin condition. “It affects the upper outer arms most commonly but can often affect the buttocks and thighs. It shows up as tiny little rough bumps on a background of red, patchy skin,” she says. While there are treatment options, she cautions against physically exfoliating the area too aggressively. “I prefer chemical exfoliants and only recommend physical exfoliants, like a scrub, very gently, one to two times per week.” Depending on whether there is a redness component or just roughness, Dr. Barankin says brides and grooms can try glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid, urea, retinol or topical steroid creams. “Omega-3 fatty acids and oral vitamin A supplements may help, too. Many can be found over the counter, although there are some great prescription options from a dermatologist. Low-dose prescription oral isotretinoin can be helpful for more severe or resistant cases.”

STRIVECTIN Super‑C Vitamin C Moisturizer SPF 30 is a lightweight daily moisturizer with the skin-brightening powers of vitamin C and protective, broad-spectrum SPF 30. 3. NATURIUM Multi-Bright Advanced Serum brightens and renews skin with its antioxidant-rich formulation, along with lactic and glycolic acid for gentle exfoliation.

NEW WAVE Wedding Belles

There’s been a shift this season, with bridal designers taking a greater interest in the female form, baring shoulders and accentuating hips. Paired with an unabashed mash-up of materials – lace layered over lamé, matte satin folded into shiny silk, brocade dotted with pearls, or all of the above – all looks that guarantee a showstopping bridal entrance. The Designer’s

TAKE We asked two leading Canadian designers for their top bridal gown trends for 2027

Take One: Ines Di Santo 1. SCULPTED NECKLINES AND DRAPED CORSETRY “Architectural bodices and refined draping are continuing to define modern bridal dressing, balancing romantic softness with strong feminine structure,” Toronto-based bridal designer Ines di Santo says. “Sculpted crescent and half-moon necklines feel particularly important for the upcoming seasons, offering a fresh, fashion-forward update to classic corsetry while resonating strongly with both brides and retailers alike.”

2. TEXTURAL DIMENSION THROUGH PLEATING AND FABRIC MANIPULATION “Texture is becoming increasingly important in bridal through fabric manipulation and couture construction techniques rather than embellishment alone. Box pleating, broomstick pleating and dimensional pickups bring movement, depth and artistry to gowns while maintaining a refined sense of modern elegance.”

PALOMA BLANCA

3. REFINED ROMANCE: HALTERS, LACE & SOFT VANILLA TONES “The next evolution of romantic bridal dressing feels softer, lighter and more effortless in spirit. Elegant halter necklines, delicate lacework, and warm vanilla-toned ivories are emerging as standout directions, bringing timeless sophistication into a more modern and understated space for today’s bride.”

MIKAELLA BRIDAL

Take Two: Mikaella Bernstein of Paloma Blanca and Mikaella Bridal

PALOMA BLANCA

1 CLEAN, TIMELESS GOWNS BUT WITH A GREATER FOCUS ON DESIGN DETAILS THAT CREATE IMPACT “Basque waists, drop waists, arched necklines and fresh approaches to draping are bringing new dimension to minimalist bridal fashion while remaining true to the understated aesthetic many brides love,” says Mikaella Bernstein, whose gowns have been designed and made in Canada for more than 75 years.

2 FLORAL LACE “We've always loved working with lace, so it's exciting to see it taking on a larger role in bridal fashion once again. Floral motifs continue to evolve season after season, offering endless possibilities for creating gowns that feel distinctive, dimensional and memorable. From subtle accents to all-over lace designs, floral lace is proving there is no single way to wear lace in 2027.” 3 STRUCTURED, OFF-THE-SHOULDER DESIGNS “While brides continue to love soft draping and detachable sleeves, there's growing interest in cleaner, more sculpted interpretations of the trend. The result is a look that feels modern, fashion-forward and effortlessly elegant.”

Regency ROMANCE WITH BRIDGERTON REVIVING “REGENCYCORE” TRENDS, MORE BRIDES AND GROOMS ARE LEANING INTO LOOKS INSPIRED BY THE REGENCY ERA BY LUCY MAZZUCCO

he rise of Regencycore beauty and fashion trends, from whimsical makeup to romantic hairstyles, as well as the overall aesthetic inspired by Bridgerton, is adding vintage flair and ethereal vibes to weddings this season.

Pretty in Pink When it comes to Regency-style makeup, Simone Otis, lead artist and product developer at 1999 Beauty, represented by Cadre Artists, says the look blends the idea of romantic makeup with an “undone” feel. “You but better” continues to be a popular makeup concept. “Luminous skin, flushed cheeks, shades of berry and subtly enhanced features create a timeless look that is particularly

“Luminous skin, flushed cheeks, shades of berry and subtly enhanced features create a timeless look that is particularly perfect for a modern bride” perfect for a modern bride,” says Otis, adding that a lightweight foundation or tint and cream blush are key, while focusing on creating a natural look that evens out the skin. Otis suggests leaving brows full but natural and creating a shape that best suits the bride while avoiding heavy or amplified eyeliner looks. “Instead, apply a very thin line just along the lash, or better yet, skip it altogether.

Go for a sheer gold or opalescent eyeshadow swept onto the eyelids, and apply a few coats of mascara, aiming most of it at the base close to the lash line to create lift and definition. Then lightly coat the rest of the lash.” For the lips, Otis recommends choosing a satin, semi-matte or stain finish in a berry shade. “Overall, I would work mostly with cream products. Blushes, eyeshadows and lip products in a cream are the best to create a natural look where the skin shines through and can be built up where needed while still maintaining a fresh-faced look.”

T OD A Y S B R I DE . C A • 34

Wonder and Whimsy While Regencycore is known for several iconic looks and styles, brides are leaning into the trends with customizations that fit their specific style and vision. “Regencycore is influencing bridal hair in a more subtle, wearable way rather than literal recreations of Bridgerton styles. We’re seeing a shift toward softer structure, natural movement and strategically placed volume that enhances the overall shape,” says Antonio Estrada, professional hairstylist and a member of Donna Bella Hair’s Pro Extensionist Team. “I still have brides asking for polished styles, but I am starting to see more requests for softer, romantic looks inspired by that era. It’s less about recreating the exact style and more about that effortless loose texture, movement and a less perfect finish.” Estrada says he is seeing soft updos with French twist details, which still give a bun shape from the front, but with more texture and movement. “Half-up styles and loose waves are big, too, with volume at the crown. Face-framing tendrils have always been a thing, but now they feel more natural and less styled like they’re just falling effortlessly into place.” To elevate the style, Estrada says clip-in extensions are a go-to for many brides and celebrities, since they can create a fuller look and make a difference in how they hold and how long curls last.

JEWELS THAT DAZZLE

Bridgerton has inspired brides and grooms to opt for bolder jewelry, as opposed to dainty accessories. “I’m loving how Bridgerton has brought back a sense of romance to how we dress, especially for meaningful moments,” says Tania Yan, CEO and founder of Olive & Piper, adding that brides and bridal parties are leaning into statement jewelry. According to Yan, more people are swapping their minimal accessories for bolder, curated pieces that feel more expressive, unique and elevated. “Think pieces that feel styled and intentional, rather than overly traditional, with chandelier earrings, thoughtful shapes and textures, and pearl details leading the way. More than anything, though, brides are breaking away from conventional styles and choosing jewelry that makes them feel confident in their own skin. In my opinion, that’s what matters most.”

TRENDSPOTTING We asked Tiffany Braund, vice president of merchandising of Tip Top Tailors, to share the latest looks for the stylish groom and groomsmen. GO WITH EARTH TONES AND WARM NEUTRALS Colour is becoming more natural and grounded, shifting toward warm neutrals and earth-toned palettes – think light tan, brown, olive, rust and blues. Instead of matching suits for all groomsmen, the focus is now on tonal coordination, where each look sits within the same colour family but varies in shade and depth. Together this creates a unified visual story that feels intentional, modern and effortlessly put together.

EMBRACE CHECK AND PLAID PATTERNS Patterns are having a moment this season, but in a much more refined way. Rather than bold or traditional statement prints, checks and plaids are being used to add subtle personality and texture to suits. These patterns work as part of a layered styling approach that creates a cohesive look across the entire wedding party. Expect to see brown and burgundy plaids, blue checks and other deep-toned patterns throughout the season.

THE TUXEDO IS BACK The tux is making a strong return for grooms this season, reaffirming its place as the ultimate symbol of timeless wedding style. Many are embracing black tie once again for its clean, confident and polished feel.

Grooms want to be more involved, expert planner Tracey Manailescu of Tracey M Events says. When grooms feel like they have a real role and their perspective matters, their involvement becomes genuine and the wedding feels that much more personal. The most successful weddings, she adds, happen when it’s approached as a true partnership, where both people feel represented in the experience. 1. GIVE HIM OWNERSHIP, NOT JUST OPINIONS “Instead of asking the groom to weigh in on every detail, give him creative control over specific elements that are important to him, like the music, bar experience or menu selections. When there’s clear ownership, he’s not just ‘helping,’ he’s actively shaping the wedding.”

2. FOCUS ON SHARED GOALS, NOT JUST AESTHETICS “Shift the conversation from ‘what do you like?’ to ‘how do we want this to feel?’ Whether it’s an incredible party, a meaningful ceremony or an unforgettable guest experience, defining those goals together naturally pulls both partners into the process.”

3. BUILD PLANNING INTO YOUR ROUTINE AS A TEAM “Set aside intentional time to plan together, whether it’s a weekly check-in or a dedicated planning night. It keeps communication open, avoids one person carrying the mental load and reinforces that this is something you’re creating together, not delegating.”

A Cliffside Wedding

Pippa and Eric knew finding the perfect location for their May 2025 wedding would be no small feat. With Pippa’s family spread across England and Italy, hosting the celebration in Ontario, where the couple currently lives, felt impractical. They instead turned to Ireland, a bucket-list destination for Pippa that the couple had visited two years before. Recommendations from their Irish videographer led them to a privately owned section of the Cliffs of Moher for a dramatic cliffside ceremony, followed by a lively reception at a local pub in Doolin. Shared with 40 close friends and family members, the day also included a touching tribute to Eric’s Maple Leaf-loving father, who passed away just six weeks earlier. QUINTESSENTIALLY IRISH: With Ireland as the backdrop, Pippa wanted every design detail to reflect the country’s natural beauty. From moss green invitations with envelope liners illustrated with the Cliffs of Moher to a classic green colour palette, the wedding incorporated several Irish-inspired elements, including a traditional handfasting ceremony and a special blessing of protection using sacred water from a holy well.

PRACTICAL & PERFECT: With Ireland’s unpredictable weather and rugged terrain, Pippa knew she needed a gown that was both beautiful and practical. She chose a stunning mermaid-style dress by Lillian West featuring delicate lace detailing and a striking V-back that was “easy to manage and not too over-the-top.”

THE PERFECT PLACE: With just 40 guests, Pippa and Eric wanted a space that felt both intimate and spacious. They immediately fell in love with Vaughan’s Pub Kilfenora, recommended by their Irish videographer. “We booked it without seeing it in person or trying the food!” said Pippa.

A ROUSING GOOD TIME: It’s no secret the Irish love a good party, and Pippa and Eric fully embraced that same spirit on their wedding day. The couple hired a local trad band to perform traditional Irish music, along with Irish dancers who got guests up on their feet throughout the night. The celebrations continued late into the night at the famed Gus O’Connors Pub, where guests gathered for more live music and pints.

BEYOND SPECIAL: “Our favourite part of the wedding was spending an entire weekend with such a supportive and loving group of people,” said Pippa. “With Eric’s father’s unexpected passing just weeks before the wedding, we were all reminded of how fragile life is and how important it is to spend time with your loved ones.”

West Coast Wonder

You never know when you’ll meet the love of your life. For Hannah and Declan, that moment came on a school bus when they were just 12 years old. After reconnecting in high school, they began dating at 16 and navigated a long-distance relationship throughout university before eventually making the move cross-country from Ontario to British Columbia. It was there, amid the wild beauty of Tofino, that they said “I do” in August 2025, surrounded by 50 of their closest friends and family – a fitting celebration for a love story that began years earlier in grade school. RIGHT AS RAIN: The week leading up to the wedding brought heavy rain, forcing Hannah and Declan to find an alternative for their planned outdoor beach ceremony. As luck would have it, a last-minute opening at The Shore Pier became available, proving that “Tofino loves love,” as one vendor told Hannah. “It turned out to be even more beautiful than we imagined, with twinkling lights overhead and views of the harbour,” she said.

SUMMER FRESH: Hannah wanted the wedding’s overall look to be light and airy, complementing rather than competing with Tofino’s natural beauty. A palette of whites, greens, butter yellow and soft pinks created a fresh, summery feel, while subtle coastal touches – including a surfboard seating chart, seashell cups and oyster-shell candles – were woven through to create a laidback beachside vibe.

LIKE A LOCAL: “Getting married in a small town meant working with vendors who were deeply connected and collaborative,” said Hannah. A local artist performed songs throughout the day while Fleur Tofino created beautiful floral arrangements that included roses, ranunculus and dahlias. And seeing how Tofino is known for its seafood, the couple served local, seasonal cuisine including side stripe shrimp cocktail, wild sockeye salmon crostini and seafood chowder. Custom Perfection For Dayja and Brandon, creating a wedding that felt deeply personal was a top priority. Nearly every detail of their October 2025 wedding in St. Jacobs, Ont., was custom designed or created by Dayja herself, from the menus and signage to the bouquets and custom-made newspapers featuring their love story on the front page. One standout element was a decorative wall built by Brandon, where the couple displayed handwritten letters for each guest. Even their first dance – complete with dramatic lifts and spins – reflected their joyful personalities. Personal touches were seen everywhere, resulting in a wedding that felt deeply meaningful and unmistakably “them.” Photography Sarah Lilley | Wedding coordinator Meliora Events | Venue Elle by Stella | Flowers HB Florals | Bridal dress Casablanca Bridal, Elizabeth & Beau | Tuxedos Giorgio Fiorelli, Toscane UOMO Hair Hair by Micho, Whispers Day Spa | Makeup Melanie Viger | Rings Michael Hill | Catering Gilt Catering

WHAT A VISION: As a 5'11" bride, Dayja wanted a gown that was proportionate and flattering – a perfect blend of timeless romance and elegance. She ultimately fell in love with a mermaid-style gown by Casablanca Bridal that “hugged in all the right places,” featuring intricate floral lace appliqués and an illusion neckline. “It made me feel confident, feminine and like the most elevated version of myself,” she said. JUST ME & YOU: Instead of a traditional “first look,” Dayja surprised Brandon with a voice memo that played just before she walked down the aisle. “It helped ground us in the moment and made my walk even more emotional,” she said. Later in the evening, the couple slipped away for a private photo and video session, recreating parts of their first dance. “It gave us a quiet moment together in the middle of such an exciting night.”

GUEST PARTICIPATION: Dayja and Brandon asked their 100 guests to wear black attire, creating a striking contrast against the sleek, white interiors of Elle by Stella’s reception space. During cocktail hour, guests also took part in an ‘Over or Under’ game, making playful predictions about details such as the number of speeches and how many outfit changes the bride would have throughout the evening (the answer: two). FEEL THE LOVE: One of the most meaningful moments of the day was having Sebastian’s best friend, Annie, officiate the ceremony. “It made the experience feel incredibly intimate and personal,” said Ryan, noting that many guests commented on how much love they could feel in the room. “There was a strong emphasis not just on how the space looked but how it felt.”

YUMMM! Bucking the traditional plated dessert course, Ryan and Sebastian opted for a lavish display of mini desserts – including macaron towers, buttercream cakes, cake pops, crème brûlée and profiteroles – that guests could graze on throughout the evening. Late-night smash burgers and truffle fries followed, bringing a fun and indulgent close to the celebration.

LOVE IN BLOOM: Florals played a central role in bringing the couple’s vision to life. Having worn countless gowns in her 15-year pageant career, she knew her wedding dress had to be unique. ELEVATED ENERGY: Tasneem and Nikhil struck a thoughtful balance between black-tie elegance and a relaxed atmosphere. While the dress code was formal, an informal standing ceremony during cocktail hour set a light, social tone from the start. The result, said Tasneem, was a “bougie but not pretentious” celebration – elevated, stylish and unmistakably true to the couple’s personality.

CUE THE MUSIC! Music played a central role throughout the day. From a live cover singer during the ceremony and cocktail hour to roaming saxophone and violin players at dinner, the celebration unfolded like a perfectly orchestrated soundtrack. The standout moment came with the couple’s entrance alongside Indian Dhol players, a vibrant nod to their cultural heritage that energized the room.

UNDERSTATED BEAUTY: Tasneem chose the Gardenia gown by Canadian designer Truvelle for its strapless bustier bodice with exposed boning and pleated skirt with a side slit. She customized the look in a clean, plain fabric instead of the original floral jacquard, opting for a more understated finish. “For me, simple was always the goal,” she said. T OD A Y S B R I D E . FLOWER Speak

How the Victorian ideology of floriography is influencing modern wedding florals BY ALISON McGILL

id you know every flower tells a story and has a secret meaning and emotion behind it? Floriography is the formal term for the language of flowers, a belief that bloomed in the Victorian era and is still very much practiced today. Back then, it was believed certain flowers, colours and floral combinations represented specific sentiments. Floriography became especially popular in an age where expressing outward emotions and feelings was socially taboo. Flowers were used to do the talking. In the realm of romance, a thoughtfully curated bouquet was often sent by a prospective suitor to communicate a covert message most often of love and longing. Today, this old-world tradition is very much alive and well, particularly in weddings. At a time when vintage elements are influencing the look and feel of so many celebrations, floriography has become beloved as an incredibly personal and creative way to infuse wedding days with an intimate air of nostalgia. “I love the idea of incorporating floriography into event design because at the time it gained popularity it was one of the main ways for lovers to communicate discretely with each other,” shares Toronto floral artist and designer Rosalie Villanueva. “It reminds me of when I would make a mixed tape for a crush to whom I couldn’t bring myself to express my feelings face to face. I would do that through music by studying the lyrics to convey what I was feeling. With floriography, and in the context of Victorian courtship, flowers were the messengers – how wildly romantic!”

When it comes to wedding flowers, floriography adds another layer of feels to everything. In addition to seasonality and variety, the meaning behind flowers has become a big influence on Villanueva's work, and an increasingly important factor for her nearlywed clients. “Over the years, I have worked with couples who have asked for particular flowers to be included in their arrangements to honour guests who have travelled from far away to celebrate them, like thistles for Scottish family members or tulips to welcome guests from the Netherlands,” Villanueva reports. “This creates a meaningful and personal moment with flowers. Floriography takes that connection deeper and is a beautiful bespoke way to share your love story with others.” The wedding bouquet is one of the most precious wedding day details and an arrangement Villanueva purposely

loves to pack with meaning. One favourite bloom she’s working with a lot at the moment is the calla lily, which has seen a massive comeback in the world of wedding florals and is once again an essential for bridal bouquets. “In floriography, the calla lily means ‘magnificent beauty,’ which is a pretty powerful message,” Villanueva says. “Who doesn’t want a bit of that messaging in their wedding bouquet?” With wedding bouquets trending more towards more organic, less rigid

and intentionally unrefined arrangements, Villanueva says some of her favourite seasonal flowers to design with are also packed with sweet sentiments. If you want to dive deeper into floriography, Villanueva has a few books she recommends checking out for inspiration. Her favourites include The Illustrated Language of Flowers by Anna Christian Burke; Language of Flowers by Kate Greenaway; and The Meaning of Flowers: Myth, Language & Lore by Ann Field and Gretchen Scoble.

sing the Chelsea Hotel Toronto as a backdrop, Tracey Manailescu of Tracey M Events and her team set out to create a mood that “feels like the kind of love story that unfolds effortlessly, full of personality, a little bit cheeky and completely magnetic,” she says. “It is downtown romance at its best – stylish, energetic and never taking itself too seriously.” The model couple, says Manailescu, “is polished and refined, yes, but also playful, a little mischievous and fully in the moment. They sneak away to hidden corners, turn a tucked away wooden elevator into their own photo moment and move through the space like they are in on a secret the rest of us wish we knew.” It is the perfect reminder that your wedding day can hold every version of you.

The design leans right into that same spirit. A showstopping caterpillar style head table overflowing with lush florals in blues, greens and crisp whites. A mirrored ceremony stage that adds just the right amount of drama. And a checkered dance floor that feels less like a reception and more like a celebration you never want to leave. “The best weddings have a heartbeat,” Manailescu says. “You can feel it the second you walk in. It is not about being perfect – it is about being present, a little playful and completely yourselves.”

The Key Elements “A caterpillar-style head table is fun because it immediately changes the feel of the room. Instead of a straight table, it’s made up of curved or serpentine sections that flow together in a soft wave. It feels organic, modern and, honestly, more social. People can actually see each other and interact instead of being stuck at opposite ends. It creates movement in the space and photographs beautifully from every angle,” says Manailescu. It works incredibly well for a smaller wedding, even around 40 guests, she adds. “In that case, I often suggest making it one continuous table that includes everyone. It gives you that intimate, ‘one long dinner party’ feel, which is always a hit.” Manailescu advises to keep the decor low and flowing with curves so you don’t interrupt the sightlines.” When it comes to architectural features like staircases or elevators, the key is to actually use them, not just treat them as background, Manailescu says. “Some of the most memorable moments come from those built-in features. A staircase can become a dramatic entrance or even part of the ceremony flow. Elevators are great for a ‘reveal’ moment. There’s something about those doors opening that naturally builds anticipation.” Beyond that, these areas often double as incredible photo spots without needing much added decor.

“One thing I always emphasize is lighting. These features can fall flat if they’re not lit properly, especially for photos,” she says. Even something as simple as soft candlelight on stairs or a focused spotlight can completely elevate the moment. An illustrator or live portrait artist is a beautiful, personal touch. “It’s one of those details that guests don’t expect and then they end up loving. What’s great is that it’s both entertainment and a keepsake,” Manailescu says. “Guests get to watch the process, interact a bit and then leave with something completely unique to them. It feels much more meaningful than a standard favour. I suggest giving the artist a dedicated, well-designed space so it feels intentional and part of the overall experience. And, if possible, have them capture a few key moments during the reception as well. Those pieces become incredibly special for the couple afterward.” A mirrored ceremony stage is a design element that instantly elevates everything. “It’s a reflective platform that the couple stands on, and it creates this layered, almost surreal effect because it mirrors the florals, the light and the couple,” she says. It’s especially impactful in photos, enhancing wide-angle shots and overheads while beautifully reflecting candlelight. “The only thing to be mindful of is keeping the surrounding design clean and intentional. Because it reflects everything, too much clutter can feel overwhelming. When it’s done right, though, it’s stunning.”

Garden PARTY …in the heart of the city. We asked an expert planner in Vancouver to show us how she turned an urban landscape into a dreamy garden escape. BY VIVIAN VASSOS

ho says you need to leave the city to be closer to nature? This romantic styled shoot, designed by Anna Labadze Avery of MyOccasion and set in downtown Vancouver, shows how to bring country-chic charm to an urban setting. Blending lush florals, soft textures and refined details, it’s a modern fairytale brought to life. Here, Labadze Avery breaks down how she did it.

The Palette: Soft & Dreamy “Lavender, lilac, soft pink and dusty blue come together to create a palette that’s both soothing and elegant,” she says. “These hues flow through every detail, from the florals to the stationery, evoking a fresh, garden-inspired feel. Captured in a soft, airy style by Sparrow Photography, the mood is one of warmth, comfort and quiet luxury.”

The Venue: A City Oasis “Set within the Marine Garden at The Westin Bayshore, this venue offers the perfect blend of natural beauty and urban convenience. Overlooking Stanley Park and the North Shore Mountains, it’s a serene escape right in the heart of Vancouver.”

Floral-Filled Details Designed by MyOccasion and brought to life by Get A Bouquet, the florals are front and centre. “Woven baskets overflowing with dahlias, spray roses, delphinium and lisianthus lend a wild, romantic vibe,” Labadze Avery says. “Elevated arrangements and soft ribbons add movement and depth to the space. The tablescape blends rustic warmth with polished details: cane-back chairs, a River Way dinner set, gold-rimmed glassware, brushed-gold flatware and natural ceramic candle holders. The sweetheart table, draped in chiffon T OD A Y S B R I DE . C A • 6 2

and framed by asymmetrical floral baskets, is a showstopper. The bride’s updo, adorned with fresh flowers, enhances the organic aesthetic.”

Personal Touches From a vintage audio guestbook to a goldrimmed mirror seating chart, thoughtful details make the celebration feel intimate and meaningful. “A garden-inspired cake, handpainted with soft green brushstrokes and fresh floral accents, ties everything together. Scented candle favours add a sensory layer of charm.”

DIY With Style “Custom touches like Canva-designed stationery, wax-seal-style name cards and a hand-painted card box bring personality to the day. A lilac-painted frame for the signature cocktail sign adds a playful, polished moment at the bar.”

Our Favourite Detail The floral baskets used throughout the ceremony and reception anchor the design. “Their natural elegance creates a sense of movement and romance that’s both grounded and elevated.” Play with varying basket heights and asymmetrical placement for a garden look that feels fresh and modern, Labadze Avery says. “Soft fabrics, layered textures and a curated colour palette bring it all to life.” Planning & Design MyOccasion.ca | Venue Westin Bayshore Vancouver | Photography Sparrow Photography | Florals Get A Bouquet | Decor Rentals Sie Collection | Hair & Makeup Faye Smith Agency | Cake Unni Pastries Ltd. | Bridal Gown Ouma Bridal | Groom’s Attire Moores Clothing | Candle Favours Eco Flame Boutique | Models Karina Khartan, Shachar Almog

Picture PERFECT How to choose the best wedding photography style to capture every precious angle of your day

hotography is one of the most important details of your wedding day, and one of the biggest investments (taking up to 20 per cent or more of your budget). When it comes to planning, locking in a photographer or photo team that you vibe with is the first step. The next is deciding on the scope and style of wedding photography as there are now many to choose from, with traditional, editorial, documentary and film being the most popular. A little primer here on wedding photography styles: traditional photography focuses on staged portraits of you and your family, as well as capturing key moments from the ceremony and reception, while editorial photography delivers a glossy, magazine-perfect aesthetic that is rich in storytelling. Documentary or photojournalism is similar to editorial, but images have a more organic, candid feel. Film photography delivers an old-world aesthetic, brimming with depth, character and warmth that simply can’t be captured digitally. Can’t decide on just one? Going with an artful variety of image styles is exactly what industry pros recommend. “There is huge value in going with a mix because a wedding day has an incredible number of layers to it,” says Danielle Arnold, a lifestyle and wedding photographer based in Erin, Ont. “Having a balance of images gives a fuller story. There is a pull today towards

imagery that feels honest and lived in. It’s less about perfect posing and more about connection. My approach touches on all of this, and I am always watching for the in-between moments – the way things actually felt, not just how they looked.” Ottawa-based wedding photographers Matthew Hawes and Adrian Larocque are the owners of Age of Indie, and they both echo these sentiments, sharing that authenticity and realness are the biggest buzzwords in wedding photography, especially in light of the rise of AI. The pair say the biggest ask from clients is delivering a gallery of aspirational, editorial-style portraits alongside images that convey candid storytelling and intentional, artistic portraiture. “We are drawn to emotionally connected moments while still creating imagery that feels elevated, cinematic

and artful,” Hawes says. “A lot of our inspiration comes from cinema, fashion editorials and nostalgic imagery. We love photographs that don’t feel overly perfect and document people as they truly are – the energy between couples, the stolen moments, family dynamics, atmosphere and all the little details that make a wedding feel uniquely theirs.” When it comes to landing on the best photo styles for your day, Hawes and Larocque say it’s an incredibly personal decision. When working with their clients, they act as advisors and curators to create a custom approach. “Every wedding has its own personality, and we really try to photograph it in a way that reflects a couple rather than forcing every wedding into the same formula,” Hawes explains. “For example, a downtown urban editorial wedding with a modern design approach might lean more cinematic and fashion-forward, while an intimate countryside wedding may feel softer, more documentary, nostalgic and organic.” Location, lighting considerations, timeline flow, styling details and colour palettes are all things that come into play when creating a shot list for the day. It also comes down to mood, how formal or relaxed you want images to be and what moments matter most. Like Arnold, Hawes and Larocque believe the best wedding galleries include a beautiful blend of imagery. The duo’s current choice mix? Candid documentary, timeless family portraits, cinematic portraits, flash photography used during the reception and woven throughout the day to create dynamic photographs, soft natural light imagery and select film imagery. t o d a y ’s P L A N N I N G

“We have found this variety is key to final images feeling dynamic, emotional and layered instead of visually onenote,” Larocque says. On film photography, Larocque says this is one of the best ways to add a bespoke element to your wedding day, delivering moments of absolute authenticity. “A lot of the ‘dreamy’ or nostalgic imagery people are drawn to online is film-based or inspired by film. What people love about film is the way it renders light. There’s a softness and depth to it that feels organic and timeless. Film also handles highlights in a beautiful way, especially during outdoor ceremonies or harsh midday light.” Another thing to know about film photography: if you want it, you need to budget a little extra. Why the added cost? Your photographer not only has to purchase rolls of film but develop, scan and colour correct images. Also, shooting film requires a specific skill set. “Unlike digital, there’s a cost attached to every single frame,” Hawes explains. “Shooting film well takes a lot of experience because there’s much less room for error, especially during fast-moving wedding days where lighting conditions change constantly. One of the reasons we love film is because it’s unpredictable in the best possible way, which means there’s an imperfection to it that feels very human.”

Bye Bye Blues Wedding planning can be stressful, so it’s important to prioritize mental health and well-being to make the most of the experience leading up to the big day BY LUCY MAZZUCCO

ith wedding planning comes a lot of decisions, which can become overwhelming for brides and grooms. From big choices to the finer details, it’s important to ensure they make time for themselves. “What people often call the ‘bridal blues’ is usually not about the wedding itself. It is about everything the wedding is holding,” says Christina Gallo, registered psychotherapist with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Toronto. “This is a time when excitement and stress can exist at the same time. You are planning something meaningful while also navigating financial decisions, family dynamics, expectations and a constant stream of choices.” Dr. Katy Kamkar, clinical psychologist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), says wedding-related stress is very common. “Industry surveys have found that most couples report significant stress during wedding planning, with many describing it as one of the most stressful life events they have faced,” she says. “Research also suggests anxiety can rise in the months leading up to the wedding. Social media may intensify this stress by increasing comparison pressures around appearance, budgets and ‘perfect wedding’ ideals.” MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS Prioritizing mental health is important since chronic stress can disrupt sleep and negatively impact moods and relationships. “Since planning often unfolds over many months, stress may become cumulative rather than temporary. Research on couples consistently shows that external stress and poor coping patterns can spill into relationship satisfaction over time,” says Dr. Kamkar. Gallo says protecting your mental health is really about protecting the connection with both yourself and your partner. “Taking care of your mental health might look like slowing things down, being honest about what you are feeling or recognizing when you have reached your limit,” she says. “Protecting your mental health is not about eliminating stress. It is about staying connected to yourself and each other while moving through it.” HEALTHY HABITS When it comes to finding ways to cope with stress, Dr. Kamkar suggests slow diaphragmatic breathing such as box breathing or 4-7-8 breathing to calm the body. She also recommends expressive journaling to improve emotional processing. “Mindfulness-based stress reduction has strong evidence for lowering anxiety and depressive symptoms. During stressful

persistent low mood or hopelessness emerge, when conflict is escalating, or when coping relies on alcohol, avoidance or restriction,” says Dr. Kamkar. “It is wise not to wait for a crisis.” Gallo says it’s worth reaching out if stress feels constant, you are having the same conversations without resolution, things feel heavier than expected, or if you need a space to talk things through without pressure. “At its core, seeking support is not about something going wrong. It is about recognizing when you do not have to carry everything on your own.”

periods, turning toward your partner with responsiveness and support can strengthen connection. It is also wise to limit passive social media scrolling if it increases comparison, anxiety or body-image pressure.” Gallo says it’s important to prioritize small, intentional shifts. “Come back to your ‘why.’ When everything feels important, pause and ask what actually matters most to you as a couple. Let that guide your decisions instead of trying to do everything,” she says, adding that it’s important to limit how many decisions brides and grooms are making at once and let some things be “good enough.” “Try to identify what is underneath the stress. It might be pressure, fear, frustration or disappointment. Naming it helps make it more manageable and gives you a clearer place to respond from.”

Cultural Connections

hen people marry into different cultures, it can be important to incorporate meaningful traditions. The Filipino heritage woven through this wedding shoot, for example, was deliberate and researched. “The Filipino aesthetic is not Hawaiian, and the wedding industry too often treats them as interchangeable,” says Olivia Saïzonou of Liv & Celebrate and the planner behind this shoot. “The terracotta linens, the vivid blooms in burnt orange, coral and peach, the dramatic floral charger plates, the gold cutlery, even the citrus fruits scattered across the table – all of it was chosen to honour Filipino culture, while still reflecting a couple's modern, elegant taste. The boutonnieres were constructed to echo the florals of the tablescape and worn with intention.” The setting, a moody candlelit lounge, was chosen because Saïzonou and her team didn,t want the look of a traditional ballroom. “We wanted something sexy and sophisticated that still felt formal and considered. Multicultural weddings, micro weddings and same-sex couples are all underrepresented in luxury editorial and this wedding sits at the intersection of all three, without compromising on beauty or intention for a single moment.” T OD A Y S B R I D E . was deeply inspired by the sense of movement and flow that’s emerging in current wedding trends, and I wanted to visually echo that through every detail of the design,” says Chrissy Kumornik of CK and Co Events and a member of The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada. “To bring that vision to life, I incorporated soft, sweeping drapery throughout the space, using fabric as a storytelling element that guided the eye and created a sense of graceful motion in each frame, much like the way a veil or gown drifts in a breeze.” The colour palette, rich with tones that evoke the rolling rows of an Italian vineyard, beautifully complements the venue’s architecture, adding warmth, depth and an effortless elegance to the overall aesthetic. “Together, the textures, colours and flowing lines help shape a narrative that feels both timeless and romantic, honouring the inspiration while creating a refined, editorial look that truly celebrates the art of wedding design.” T ODA Y S B R I DE . hotographed at Bellwoods Brewery in Toronto, this shoot reimagines vintage romance through a modern lens, featuring a curated collection of vintage dresses styled with bold, playful details,” says Victoria Barrett, the Toronto-based makeup artist who worked the looks on set. Lush florals add texture and depth, while pops of lavender, orange and burgundy create a vibrant, seasonal palette. Fruits are incorporated into the styling to bring richness and whimsy to the tablescape design. Silver & Smoke

bold editorial wedding concept created in Toronto, this styled shoot explores the intersection of modern bridal fashion, sculptural design and immersive atmosphere. Inspired by the contrast between metallic textures and organic elements, the concept brings together silver tones, reflective surfaces, moss and contemporary florals to create a visually striking yet refined wedding setting.

The space is framed by dramatic silver drapery that cascades across the backdrop, forming a luminous stage for the entire design. The layered metallic fabric reflects light beautifully and creates movement, giving the scene a fashion-forward, almost cinematic quality. Against this textured backdrop, the bride appears in a custom-designed gown created especially for the shoot, featuring a structured silhouette and intricate fabric details.

T OD A Y S B R I D E . C A • 82

Throughout, organic elements soften the metallic environment. Sculptural floral arrangements rise from beds of moss, combining white roses, calla lilies and silver-painted anthuriums. Many of the stems extend beneath a transparent dining table, creating the illusion of a living garden growing below. The clear table allows every detail to remain visible, transforming the florals, moss and silver elements into part of the visual composition. Refined table settings with silver flatware, textured glassware and minimal lamps enhance the contemporary aesthetic. Soft fog drifts across the floor and surfaces, adding an atmospheric quality. The same effect surrounds a striking champagne tower, where metallic coupes and swirling mist create a dramatic celebratory moment that feels both modern and luxurious.

T ODA Y S B R I DE . C A • 83

i ns p i ra t i o n B O A R D S An additional highlight is a cocktail-style art table designed for the reception hour. Instead of traditional plated service, small appetizers and desserts are arranged in a seemingly spontaneous composition across a transparent table. The dishes appear almost like miniature sculptures, scattered between floral stems and surrounded by gentle clouds of fog. Guests can wander around the table, discovering the details, tasting the small bites and experiencing the display as both a culinary and visual installation. Completing the scene is a statement wedding cake placed against the shimmering draped backdrop, reinforcing the editorial tone of the shoot. Together, these elements create a modern wedding vision where fashion, design, gastronomy and atmosphere merge into a sophisticated and unforgettable experience.

As Seen on SOCIAL SOME OF THE MOST FABULOUS DESTINATION WEDDING TRENDS COME COURTESY OF SOCIAL MEDIA BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO

ROAMING FOOD BAR This takes mingling to a whole other level! As seen on Instagram, having someone circulate among guests during cocktail hour, strapped to a food tray complete with toppings, sauces and fillings, is a sure-fire way to spark conversation and add a playful, interactive touch to the day. A growing number of caterers and resorts are offering “roaming” food bars, from decadent cannolis and mini tacos to poutine, flavoured popcorn and burrata. Guests will love watching these delicious treats being assembled fresh in front of them as they move throughout the room.

BRIDESMAIDS AISLE Take a look at almost any wedding ceremony photo and you’ll notice the aisle seats appear in nearly every frame. A growing Instagram trend has bridesmaids seated along the aisle, creating a striking visual effect as they frame the ceremony space. With coordinated dresses or complementary colours, the end result is a polished, cohesive look that stands out beautifully in photos.

COLOUR-THEMED WELCOME BAGS GROUP DIY CENTREPIECES Now here’s a really fun one! We recently spotted a wedding trend on Instagram where guests at each table created their own centrepieces using Lego pieces – a hands-on activity that sparked conversation, teamwork and plenty of laughs. Each table received Lego kits and instructions to build individual flowers. Once completed, the flowers were arranged in vases to create colourful, one-of-akind centrepieces that doubled as décor and entertainment. Not into Lego? Try origami flowers or DIY paper pom-poms instead — both are lightweight, easy to pack and simple for guests to create together.

It’s customary to give guests welcome bags upon arrival at a resort or wedding venue as a thoughtful way to show appreciation for the effort they’ve made to make the trip. A great idea we saw on TikTok is to extend your wedding colour palette beyond just the bag itself and into the contents inside. If mint green is your chosen colour, consider including items such as green lip balm, green luggage tags, green sunglasses, green tea eye masks and individual packs of aloe vera gel. The result is a cohesive, visually striking welcome experience that feels both curated and fun.

HAND-DRAWN INVITATIONS Destination weddings are all about fun, so your invitations should set the tone from the start. One trend we recently spotted on TikTok features hand-drawn doodles of the wedding couple incorporated into the invitation design. Planning a wedding in Rome? Consider a simple sketch of the two of you in a Fiat in front of the Colosseum. Or what about a cartoon illustration of the couple hula dancing for a Hawaiian celebration? Pro tip: Browse Etsy for cartoonists and sketch artists or create the drawings yourself for an even more personalized feel.

AWEIGH! 15 QUESTIONS EVERY COUPLE SHOULD ASK ABOUT CRUISE WEDDINGS BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO

reaming of saying “I do” at sea? Cruise weddings are making waves with couples looking for a celebration that combines travel, romance and built-in value. From venues with ocean views to guest accommodations and dining, a wedding at sea offers a unique alternative to a traditional wedding. We sat down with Koreen McNutt, Vice President of North American Trade Sales at Virgin Voyages, to answer some of the most common questions couples have about planning their big day on the water.

2

. WHAT TYPE OF WEDDING VENUES ARE ONBOARD? “We have three stunning options. The Perch is an open-air deck with 360-degree ocean views. The Wake is one of our gorgeous restaurants with the ship’s wake stretching behind you. And The Scene is an intimate indoor space with more privacy. Currently, our

largest package hosts up to 50 guests so there’s a venue to match whatever you’re envisioning.”

3

. WHAT DO CRUISE WEDDING PACKAGES TYPICALLY INCLUDE? “Every package comes with a Wedding Specialist before you sail, an onboard coordinator on the day, a private venue, a member of the ship team leadership as the officiant, music, décor, cake and florals. Think of that as your foundation, then you build from there: live musicians, upgraded flowers and spa treatments. Cruise fares are separate but here’s the thing: your guests’ accommodations, dining and entertainment are already covered in the voyage. That’s a remarkable value.”

4

. WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT DO YOU OFFER DURING THE PLANNING STAGE AND ON THE WEDDING DAY? “You get a dedicated Wedding Specialist from the moment you book, who stays with you through every decision before you ever step foot on the ship. Then on the day itself, your onboard coordinator takes the baton. There is no awkward handoff – just two people who know your wedding inside and out, making sure everything lands exactly right.”

5

. WHAT IS THE AVERAGE STARTING COST FOR A WEDDING AT SEA? “Currently, packages start at US$4,000 for an intimate elopement-style ceremony, $5,000 for up to four guests, and $8,000 for the full celebration with up to 50 people. That’s the ceremony package. Total spend depends on your guest count, cabin choices and add-ons. But compare that to the average traditional wedding cost and do the math. Getting married at sea starts to look very smart, very quickly.”

6

. HOW DO YOU HANDLE LEGAL MARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS AND DOCUMENTATION? “Our onboard ceremonies are symbolic rather than legally binding, which honestly is a feature – not a limitation. The legal paperwork gets handled before or after the voyage based on wherever you call home. What that means is you get the full ceremony experience without the administrative chaos of navigating maritime law in international waters. Your

1

. HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD WE BOOK A CRUISE WEDDING? “The sooner, the better, but we adapt and tailor to our couples’ visions and timeframes. Our wedding program can hold up to 16 cabins for 30 days while you sort your guest list, but popular sailings go fast. Give yourself some runway – your guests will thank you for it, and so will your stress levels.”

7

. CAN WE INCORPORATE ELEMENTS BOTH ONBOARD THE SHIP AND IN PORT? “I love this question because it’s exactly the kind of creative thinking we want couples to bring. Port days open up some incredible possibilities that couples can arrange on their own while being mindful of the allaboard time. Your Wedding Specialist is your collaborator so the earlier you bring up the idea, the more likely we can make it a reality.”

8

. WHAT CONTINGENCY PLANS ARE IN PLACE IF WEATHER OR ITINERARY CHANGES AFFECT THE WEDDING DAY? “We plan for the unexpected from day one. Ceremony details are locked in at least 45 days out. If something shifts, your Wedding Specialist moves quickly so you don’t have to. We always have alternative venues ready. The ocean is a little unpredictable – your wedding day doesn’t have to be.”

9

. ARE WE ABLE TO BRING IN OUTSIDE VENDORS? “We offer florals and hair services through our own team, all vetted and ship-ready. For anything beyond that, your Wedding Specialist is the person to have that conversation with early on. Every sailing has its own logistics and we want to make sure any outside element is set up to actually work. Bring your wish list and we’ll figure it out together.”

10

. CAN WE INCORPORATE OUR OWN CULTURAL OR RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS? “Couples write their own vows, choose their own music and shape the ceremony to reflect who they are. We’ve helped couples weave in all kinds of meaningful cultural and personal touches. My advice? Share what matters to you early. The more we know, the more we can honour it.”

12

. WHAT ARE SOME COMMONLY OVERLOOKED COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH WEDDINGS AT SEA THAT WE SHOULD BUDGET FOR EARLY ON? “Cruise fares for guests are often the biggest overlooked expense since they sit outside the wedding package itself. Couples should also budget for optional enhancements such as upgraded florals, live music or a DJ, as well as pre- and post-voyage travel and hotel stays, particularly for destination sailings. The advantage is that many guest expenses typically associated with a traditional wedding weekend – including dining, onboard entertainment and activities – are already part of the voyage experience.”

13

. DO YOU OFFER GROUP DISCOUNTS AND OTHER GROUP PERKS FOR WEDDINGS? “Yes, through the Weddings program. Groups get 10% off voyage fares, a bar tab per cabin that scales with how long you’re sailing, up to 30 days to hold cabins while you finalize your guest list, as well as pre-voyage dining coordination. There’s no rigid minimum for a group – it’s really about bringing people together for something special.”

14

. WHAT HAPPENS IF A GUEST CANCELS LAST-MINUTE? “Guests can join a Wedding group up to 45 days before sailing, which gives you a solid window to manage changes as they come. Individual guest cancellations don’t have to unravel everything – your Wedding Specialist will walk you through how it interacts with your group’s overall structure and perks. It’s a conversation worth having early on so there are no surprises.”

11

. HOW DO YOU ACCOMMODATE GUESTS WITH DIFFERENT NEEDS, INCLUDING MOBILITY CONCERNS OR DIETARY RESTRICTIONS? “Our ships are designed to be inclusive. For mobility needs, our team coordinates with you well in advance so nothing is left to chance on the day. As for dining, Virgin Voyages already handles a wide range of dietary needs across our restaurants. For weddings specifically, your onboard coordinator makes sure every guest is taken care of. Nobody should be thinking about logistics on your wedding day – that’s our job.”

T OD A Y S B R I DE . C A • 9 2

15

. WHAT HAPPENS IF THE CRUISE LINE ENDS UP CANCELLING THE CRUISE, FOR WHATEVER REASON? “In the rare event that happens, we don’t just leave you stranded. We work with you directly to find the right path forward, whether that’s rebooking on another sailing or figuring out alternatives. Your Wedding Specialist stays with you through it all. We’d also always recommend looking at Voyage Protection as part of your planning because life is beautifully unpredictable and it’s good to be covered.” For more information, go to virginvoyages.com.

Cultural Weddings Go

CUSTOM FOR COUPLES WITH SPECIFIC CELEBRATORY NEEDS, AUTHENTICITY AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL MAKE THESE DESTINATIONS SHINE ABOVE THE REST BY JEN O’BRIEN odern fêtes are anything but formulaic, and that includes destination weddings. Long gone are the days of standardized all-inclusive wedding packages with zero personalization. In fact, destination wedding offerings around the world are trending entirely in the opposite direction: if you can dream it, they can do it. This is especially good news for couples planning cultural destination weddings abroad, which require specialized care and attention to detail.

“Across the board, we’re seeing much greater demand for destination wedding ceremonies that fit the specific desires of couples,” says John K. Hawks, executive director of the Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association (DWHSA). “Destination weddings are now a much more common choice for couples, so they know they can ask for the same [customization] they might request if they were saying their vows at home.” Bespoke service, especially when it comes to cultural considerations, has become so important that, according to Hawks, many resorts, especially in popular tourist destinations, have prioritized upskilling staff on the intricacies of celebratory traditions and expanding their vendor networks to cater to specific dietary and ceremonial needs. Hyper-personalization is indeed emerging as the new norm, but planning a cultural celebration – especially overseas – requires finding a venue that also offers a fine balance of flexibility, expertise, access and organizational precision. With this in mind, we set out to discover the destinations and properties that truly specialize in specific types of cultural destination weddings.

With large guest lists, rich customs, specific dietary requirements and festivities that run the better part of a week, South Asian celebrations can be among the most complex weddings to plan and execute abroad. Mexico has responded by emerging as a go-to spot for these grand multi-day, multi-event celebrations. On the Pacific coast, Grand Velas Los Cabos is particularly well-versed in such celebrations, pairing deep cultural understanding with operational meticulousness. This property boasts an expansive oceanfront setting ideal for a

sangeet (pre-wedding celebration) or baraat (groom’s wedding procession) as well as a culinary program specializing in authentic regional Indian cuisines. “One wedding that truly stands out was a multi-day celebration where the couple envisioned bringing a traditional Indian wedding atmosphere into a beachfront setting without compromising authenticity,” says Gina Jimenez, Corporate Director of Weddings at Velas Resorts. “To achieve this, our team coordinated closely with international and local vendors to design a fully customized mandap overlooking the ocean, incorporating traditional floral elements, intricate textiles and a structure adapted to withstand coastal conditions without losing its cultural essence. For the baraat, we transformed the arrival experience into a vibrant beachfront procession, complete with live dhol players.” On the Caribbean coast, Secrets Playa Mujeres and its neighbouring sister property Dreams Playa Mujeres offer a unique two-inone resort experience particularly well-suited for larger, multi-generational groups. On-site wedding coordinators undergo specialized training in South Asian traditions and couples can take advantage of the special Dulha & Dulhan Wedding Package, which can act as a starting point for a customized multi-day celebration. Weddings Manager Yamina Bermundez recalls one such celebration, which unfolded over four days and gradually transformed

different areas of the resort complex into a series of distinct yet connected experiences, from a mehndi garden party to a sangeet with custom-designed stage. The baraat was a particular highlight, featuring a procession kicked off by a high-energy batucada performance followed by a deejay performing from a moving pickup truck while family and friends danced alongside. “The experience culminated at the wedding gazebo on the beach, where the groom’s arrival on horseback completed the moment,” says Bermundez.

Chinese Weddings Auspicious red and gold décor, a morning tea ceremony to honour elders and an elegant reception featuring an elaborate multi-course banquet are hallmarks of Chinese wedding celebrations. And when it comes to offering celebratory grandeur in a paradisical setting, Hawaii is unrivalled. Couples should set their sights on the island of Oahu, specifically the Halekulani Hotel, an iconic beachfront property in Waikiki with a name that aptly translates into “House Befitting Heaven”.

restaurant and lively nightlife as well as its adults-only sister property, Condado Ocean Club, are both great picks for same-sex celebrations. “Our team embraces non-traditional wedding formats and enjoys helping couples create celebrations that feel authentic to them. Whether it’s dual-aisle ceremonies, custom seating arrangements or surprise performances, we collaborate closely with couples and planners to make every detail feel intentional and meaningful,” says La Concha’s Catering Director, Irene Alvarez. “We also work with trusted local vendors and partners who understand the importance of creating a welcoming and celebratory spirit for every couple,” she adds.

Spiritual Weddings Rather than adhering to any one set of structured religious beliefs, spiritual weddings are typically rooted in nature and emphasize the emotional, energetic and mindful connection between two partners. “What truly sets us apart is our exceptional level of service and culinary excellence,” says Catering Sales Manager Sayaka Inoue. “We proudly offer one of the finest banquet dining experiences in the destination, paired with a team known for its meticulous attention to detail and ability to anticipate our guests’ needs. “For couples incorporating Chinese traditions, we find that tea ceremonies are among the most requested elements, and these are beautifully hosted within the privacy and comfort of a spacious hotel suite. Our commitment is to create a seamless and elevated experience, regardless of the cultural elements involved,” she adds.

One of the most important considerations for LGBTQ+ couples marrying abroad is that the destination itself is supportive, safe and legally recognizes same-sex marriage. Access to inclusive vendors is also paramount. Puerto Rico, where same-sex marriage has been legal since 2015, fits the bill with its vibrant culture and stunning tropical scenery. In fact, it’s quickly gaining a reputation as the most LGBTQ+-friendly destination in the Caribbean. The lively Condado area of San Juan is particularly well-known for its inclusive atmosphere. Jewish Weddings On top of its beautiful scenery, world-class beaches and convenient location, The Bahamas has emerged as a top destination for Jewish weddings abroad, offering everything from oceanfront chuppahs and kosher cuisine to Shabbat-friendly amenities. Set within the sprawling Baha Mar resort destination in Nassau, the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar may be the best equipped hotel in the Caribbean to host a Jewish celebration. The property offers customizable chuppah set-ups, on-site eruv, both a kosher meat and dairy kitchen as well as rabbinic access and religious-service support via the property’s strong relationship with Chabad of Bahamas. “My role is to help couples and their families feel comfortable, heard and confident that the details that matter most to them – from kosher dining needs to cultural traditions and religious observances – are understood and thoughtfully handled,” says Jennifer Goodman, Event Sales Manager at Grand Hyatt Baha Mar. “We can offer kosher menus for weddings, along with access to several kosher dining options on property, including a kosher food truck and pre-packaged kosher meals. We can also support Shabbat services and minyan options.” Beyond traditional offerings, couples can add Bahamian flair to their celebrations by hiring the property’s resident flock of flamingos to attend the bedeken (pre-wedding ritual), mingle with guests during cocktail hour or even walk down the aisle during the wedding procession.

connecting with nature. The shores of Lake Atitlán, a volcanic crater known as the “Mirror of the Soul” surrounded by towering volcanoes, provides the perfect entrée to Guatemala’s divine riches. Few properties can cater to couples as well as Casa Palopó, a breathtaking luxury boutique hotel with 15 rooms and suites featuring natural beauty, cultural richness and the calming energy of Lake Atitlán. “Casa Palopó offers couples the opportunity to incorporate meaningful spiritual and cultural elements into their wedding celebrations in ways that feel authentic, intentional and deeply connected to the spirit of Lake Atitlán,” says Weddings and Events Sales Executive Ana Paula Zedan. “One of the most requested experiences is a traditional Mayan blessing ceremony led by a local shaman, which can be integrated into the wedding itself or offered as a private ritual before the ceremony begins. Couples may also choose to include cacao ceremonies, guided meditation moments, sound healing experiences, lake-view yoga sessions or sacred fire rituals as part of their wedding weekend itinerary. These experiences are designed to encourage mindfulness, emotional connection, gratitude and presence among the couple and their guests.”

LEADING WITH

EXPERIENCE Why couples are planning trips around meaningful experiences rather than destinations BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO

lanning a trip usually starts with choosing a destination and then booking hotels, excursions and activities around it. But today’s honeymooners are rethinking that approach. Instead of starting with where to go, they’re first asking: what do we want to do? From chasing the Northern Lights to taking cooking classes, experience-led honeymoons are reshaping how couples travel after saying “I do.” This shift, says Laurie Keith, President of Romantic Planet Vacations in Beamsville, Ont., reflects how well-travelled many modern couples already are. “Today’s newlywed market considers all-inclusive beach getaways part of their normal travel routine. They view their honeymoon as a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to break out of the normal travel mold and do something more meaningful together.” MEANINGFUL MOMENTS Rather than focusing solely on luxury resorts, couples are increasingly planning honeymoons around immersive experiences and personal passions. For some, that means glacier hikes or wildlife encounters. For others, it’s simply about slowing down and discovering somewhere new together. Keith says demand has grown for destinations that feel less mainstream. “We’re seeing more interest in places like Naples, Porto, Budapest, Copenhagen and Reykjavik, and Japan has been in high demand for the last couple of years,”

she says, adding that China is also emerging as a unique destination among newlyweds. “The less familiar the destination is to these couples, the more intrigued they are to explore it together.” Closer-to-home adventures are also gaining traction. One standout trend is Northwest Territories, where honeymooners can experience the Aurora Borealis in remote wilderness settings. “The thought of snuggling up together while nature performs an arctic dance in the sky full of colour leads to one of the top honeymoon experiences in Canada,” says Keith. PLANNING MAKES PERFECT According to Keith, experience-led honeymoons often require more in-depth planning, which is why couples are increasingly turning to travel advisors to help curate these highly personalized itineraries. With 22 years of experience as a honeymoon expert, she recommends securing the trip with a deposit 8–11 months prior to departure. For budgeting, set aside a minimum of $2,000 per person for airfare and $200–$300 per person, per day for basic accommodations, meals, transfers and sightseeing. To help save costs, Keith says couples can set up a honeymoon gift registry, dip into their airline rewards points or travel during the off- or shoulder season, which can shave up to 20% off. “However, I would never suggest cutting out the experiential part of the honeymoon like room upgrades, cooking classes or private airport transfers,” she says. “These truly enhance the overall experience and are what couples rave about and remember for a lifetime.”

ADVENTURE FOR TWO TODAY’S HONEYMOONERS ARE SWAPPING BEACH RESORTS FOR UNFORGETTABLE THRILLS AND SHARED EXPERIENCES BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO

dventure, once synonymous with backpacking and roughing it, is redefining the modern honeymoon. Today’s newlyweds are increasingly trading traditional beach vacations for immersive experiences that combine romance and big thrills, from glacier hiking in Alaska and volcano hiking in Iceland to safari sundowners in Tanzania. The shift reflects a broader change in how couples travel. According to the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s 2025 Adventure Travel Trends & Insights report, many travellers are looking to venture off the beaten path and travel like a local, while culinary experiences, safaris and cultural immersion rank among the top adventure activities. Meanwhile, a 2025 Hilton trends report found that seven in 10 global travellers enjoy being active while travelling and 76% actively seek accommodations that offer unique experiences. For honeymooners, the appeal goes behind simply seeing a new destination. Adventure honeymoons allow couples to create shared memories through discovery and challenge, while still enjoying elevated accommodations and romantic moments along the way. “We’re definitely seeing a massive shift in how Canadian couples define the ‘perfect’ honeymoon,” says Sarah Marcucci, Manager, Communications at Canadianowned G Adventures. “For a long time, the gold standard was a fly-and-flop beach resort, but today’s couples are looking for something much deeper.” A NEW KIND OF ROMANCE According to Marcucci, many couples have already experienced the typical allinclusive getaway before getting married. Honeymoons, therefore, have become an opportunity to pursue something more meaningful together.

“They want a shared ‘first’ they’ll remember forever,” she says. “Something like watching the sunrise over Machu Picchu or swimming with sperm whales in Dominica. They’re looking for a story – not just a tan.” That emotional connection is a major reason why adventure honeymoons are resonating with couples. While luxury resorts will never lose their appeal, many newlyweds are discovering that overcoming “challenges” together creates a different kind of intimacy. “There is something incredibly romantic about stepping outside of your comfort zone together,” says Marcucci. “Navigating a bustling night market in Bangkok or trekking through a rainforest creates a sense of shared accomplishment that you just don’t get sitting by a pool.”

ADVENTURE MEETS LUXURY One collection helping shape this trend is G Adventures’ National Geographic Signature trips, which combine immersive experiences with boutique accommodations, expert-led storytelling and cultural connection. Designed for travellers who want both adventure and comfort, the itineraries focus on exclusive access and meaningful local interaction without sacrificing luxury. The collection also appeals to couples with different travel styles. “It’s very common to have one partner who wants to summit a mountain and another who would prefer to spend the afternoon in a museum or local vineyard,” says Marcucci. “My advice is to stop looking for a compromise and start looking for alignment.” She adds that because Signature trips pair high-adrenaline days with deeply romantic, “only-for-us” evenings while also prioritizing unique accommodations and incredible food, the less adventurous partner feels pampered and comfortable while the other is constantly stimulated by new experiences and the remoteness of the area. “When you’re both learning something new for the first time, the gap between your physical comfort zones disappears,” says Marcucci.

Certain destinations naturally lend themselves to this style of honeymoon travel. Marcucci points to Bhutan for couples seeking spiritual connection and reflection. “Walking hand-in-hand to the Tiger’s Nest cliffside monastery with the scent of pine and the sound of prayer wheels in the air creates a spiritual bond that is incredibly moving,” she says. For wildlife lovers, Tanzania offers romance through shared wonder and unforgettable landscapes. “The romance here is found in the elevated views from the Kopjes hill where you can watch wildlife gather along the Tarangire River from your private balcony,” she adds. Other standout destinations within the National Geographic Signature collection include Palau for marine adventures, Vietnam for cultural immersion and Southwest France for couples drawn to wine, history and culinary travel. Ultimately, Marcucci believes adventure honeymoons are less about adrenaline and more about connection. “When you strip away the distractions of everyday life and replace them with the shared awe of a new culture or a breathtaking landscape,” she says, “it creates a bond that is much stronger than just rose petals on a hotel bed.” PLANNING AHEAD Timing is key for couples considering an adventure honeymoon, says Marcucci. She recommends leaving a few days after the wedding to avoid burnout before embarking on a long-haul journey. She also suggests booking six to nine months in advance, particularly for high-demand experiences like the Inca Trail in Peru or wildlife safaris. But most importantly, balance is key. The ideal itinerary should combine immersive experiences with moments of relaxation and comfort, allowing for time in between to connect as a couple. “Romance and adventure don’t just co-exist – they fuel each other,” says Marcucci. “The best way to start your next chapter isn’t by tuning out the world but by diving into it together.”

ne of the biggest travel trends of the year is quietness. ‘Quietcations’ or ‘Hushpitality’ is a movement focused on comfort, silence and escaping the stressors of modern life. With always-on digital lives, so many of us crave quietude in a travel destination. One of the most picturesque places is the island of St. Kitts, where the vibes are easy and effortless. This gem of the Caribbean is made for chill time and a mindset reset. “In St. Kitts you feel an immediate sense of warmth when you are flying into the island,” shares Kelly Fontanelle, CEO of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, “Looking out the window before landing, you see mountain ranges, ocean and lush greenery. Everything about the island delivers a feeling of deep relaxation for the mind, body and soul. When you get to St. Kitts, I always say you leave all your worries behind.” With a history that dates back 3,000 years, St. Kitts is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, forming part of the West Indies in the northeastern Caribbean. It united with sister island Nevis in 1882, and together they’re considered among Spain

A PRECIOUS CANADIAN CONNECTION

Old Road Rum Company

Canadian fine jeweller bluboho shares a special connection with St. Kitts, having made the island the inspiration behind a glittering three-part limited-edition collection, ‘safe travels, wild hearts.’ To date, the bluboho X St. Kitts lineup includes a trio of gemstone-encrusted charms and eight one-of-akind engagement rings featuring shades of sapphire hues inspired by the island’s landscapes. Maggie Aurocco, founder of bluboho, says she was inspired to create the collection after being completely captivated by the island’ raw beauty during a visit. “St. Kitts is a place that slows you down and delivers awe and wonder, offering moments of reflection, beauty and spirituality,” Aurocco says. “The aim with this collection was to capture the island and the sunny, hot, sexy love story of the destination.” The final drop of the bluboho X St. Kitts collection is set for this fall, offering a sparkling memento to commemorate a romantic island escape.

at the beach by shopping for locally inspired fashion at Caribelle Batik. Walking into this boutique, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a riotous rainbow of handcrafted fabrics, all created in-house. Every piece – from sarongs to shirts and scarves – is bespoke.

No taste tour of St. Kitts is complete without taking a deep dive into the island’s famous libation: rum. No matter where you eat on the island, you’ll find the signature cocktail rum punch on the menu. St. Kitts is home to Old Road Rum Company, the oldest surviving rum distillery in the Caribbean dating back to 1681. A tour of the grounds on Wingfield Estate will immerse you in the rich history of local rum, and you can even sign on to become a certified Kittitian Rum master after creating and bottling a custom blend to take home with you.

FOODIE DELIGHTS “The food in St. Kitts is special because it’s a beautiful fusion of so many cultures,” Fontanelle shares. “French, Indian and African are three of the most predominant influences, and together they create a food scene that is very unique. Every meal in St. Kitts has a rich story to tell.” To enjoy classic Kittitian and Caribbean dishes with a modern flair, Carambola Beach Club has a menu packed with delicious local delights including grilled spiny lobster. Spice Mill Restaurant is another elevated spot serving up incredible fusion flavours (signature dishes include conch fritters, jerk pork and a killer vegan curry), best enjoyed at a beachfront table with magical views of Nevis. A dreamy lunch spot is 1762 Gibraltar, a cool gastro lounge located at the top of Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park with a standout cocktail menu. The best spot for limin’ like a local is Reggae Beach Bar & Grill, a legendary beach eatery that’s open daily but really buzzes on Friday nights with local Lobster Fest.
