A world of possibilities Hello! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Cindy, the new Editor-in-Chief of Destination Wedding magazine, and I’m so excited to meet you all!

FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTESTS, TRENDS, IDEAS, BEHIND-THE-SCENES PHOTOS AND MORE.

Like many of you, travel has been a lifelong passion of mine. As a travel writer and editor, I’ve been lucky enough to visit some of the world’s most beautiful and romantic destinations, from St. Lucia and Colombia, to Italy, Bali and Fiji. And though I have not, admittedly, had a wedding of my own, I have joyfully been a part of several (six to be exact), giving me a front row seat to the exciting journey you’re about to embark on. So for an avid travel and rom-com addict like me, this perfect marriage between travel and romance is an irresistible draw. There’s no better way to say ‘I do’ than with your toes in the sand or back to the wind, preferably while on board a cruise ship, luxury train or even hot air balloon. When it comes to destination weddings, anything goes, which is ever so true in both travel and love. In this issue of Destination Wedding, we’re celebrating this very notion of having limitless possibilities. With travel back in full swing, a world of romantic options has once again opened up to wedding couples, whether they want a Caribbean ceremony on the beach, an ultra-luxe gala in the Mediterranean, or an adventure-filled celebration in an African savanna. No matter where your destination wedding takes you, one thing’s for sure – you’re in for the trip of a lifetime. So without further ado, let’s explore a world of romantic possibilities, passports in hand. You’ll find everything you need in this issue – from dress ideas to beauty tips to exotic locales – to inspire you on your destination wedding journey. Have fun, travel well, and thanks for letting me come along for the ride.

FORWARD FRESH OFF THE RUNWAY, THESE LATEST WEDDING DRESS TRENDS ARE SURE TO MAKE YOU SHINE, NO MATTER THE DESTINATION Brides are once again embracing the limitless possibilities that come with planning a destination following the pandemic years. With many taking the leap across the pond or flying south to say “I do” in paradise, they’re also venturing outside the box when it comes to picking their wedding dresses. From flattering florals to muted hues and nostalgic elements of the past, we’ve rounded up a few new bridal dress trends that recently rocked the runway to inspire brides ahead of their destination wedding. Whether they’re exchanging vows in the Caribbean or Sin City or the Mediterranean, these fashionforward designs are nothing short of spectacular.

1

BY LUCY MAZZUCCO

1. BEACH BLISS From Cancun, Mexico to Montego Bay, Jamaica, the options for a beach wedding are truly endless. Oftentimes, brides opt for simpler styles that are easier to transport and more lightweight and comfortable to wear in tropical climates. Keeping this in mind, many designers are incorporating unique elements to the bodices of dresses such as pleats near the neckline or even an oversized bow that adds a playful dimension to an otherwise simple dress. While the high leg slit isn’t a new trend, designers have recently been experimenting with geometric elements such as plunged necklines and skirts with varying lengths. Plus, high leg slits come in handy for keeping brides cool when posing for photos in the heat.

2. VEGAS, BABY! Albeit a bit cliché, Las Vegas, Nevada offers a fun, easy and ultra-glamourous option for destination weddings. Various new dress designs spotted at last year’s Bridal Fashion Week challenged conventional necklines with curves and peaks. And, let’s face it, there’s no better place than Vegas to challenge conventional ideas! For brides who are looking to make a statement while keeping their dress choice somewhat traditional, these types of necklines may be just what they’re

looking for. Other great alternatives to the conventional sweetheart neckline include plunge and deep V-necklines, both of which fall into the trending geometric category.

3. CATHEDRAL WEDDING If you’re having a cathedral wedding, say in Europe or Latin America, you’ll need a dress that matches the grandeur and tradition of the venue. Several designs that recently rocked the 4 runway at Bridal Fashion Week featured long sleeves, which isn’t necessarily a new trend, but the newest lace and floral variations add a modern touch to a traditional ballgown or A-line dress. Nostalgia is also playing a key role in the latest wedding dress trends, with more designs featuring elements of the past like statement shoulders reminiscent of the ‘80s. These 5 oversized sleeves not only serve to cover up a more modest bride for her cathedral wedding, but also add an eye-catching structural element to her wedding look.

4. MEDITERRANEAN MAGIC While there are many tourist destinations that are go-to options for weddings, the Mediterranean offers an array of underrated towns and cities that are just waiting for couples to discover.

To match the beauty of this region, consider florals, which have recently made the ultimate comeback in the wedding world. From florals in pastel shades to more subtle and delicate flower designs, floral patterns and overlays make for an ultra-romantic option when saying “I do.” Also recently seen on the runway are fairy talelike dresses in muted tones and pastels that steer away from the conventional white and cream shades.

D EST I NAT I ONWEDDINGM AGAZINE .CA • 13

5. COTTAGE WEDDING When you think of cottage country, you probably don’t envision the majestic, castlelike buildings of England or Ireland. If you’re planning a destination wedding in a European countryside estate, matching your dress with your opulent surroundings is an absolute must. Several designers have incorporated bold styles into their collections for 2024, including beautifully-adorned bodices with encrusted jewels that are both lavish and sophisticated. For those who are looking to stay local, cottages across Ontario can be equally stunning and serene. Several designers have incorporated whimsical tulle skirts (some with an exaggerated ballgown feel and asymmetrical lines) that make for beautiful action shots when posing for photos outdoors.

Chelsea

Michael

Chelsea and Michael’s wedding was more than just an exchange of vows – it was a labour of love that honoured his beloved late mother. Their journey to the altar took them all the way from Ontario, Canada to Lozzola, Italy, to the very same church his mother attended as a child.

D EST I NAT I ONWEDDINGM AGAZINE .CA • 14

A TOUCHING TRIBUTE: Michael’s mother passed away unexpectedly in June 2021, six months after Michael proposed to Chelsea with her engagement ring. “It’s the ring I wear today and the ring that I wore on my wedding day,” says Chelsea. FAMILY ABOVE ALL ELSE: “Michael’s mother’s family played a major role in helping us plan and prep our wedding,” says Chelsea. “It was a true labour of love that felt really special when the day finally came.” DETAILS OF LOVE: Michael’s aunt coordinated with local florist Piante Fiori Sartoria – Obino Stefania to pull off a beautiful colour palette of neutral tones, capturing the couple’s theme of “rustic Italian charm meets adventure.” The couple and their 30 guests dined like the locals, with house-made Italian pastas at Bar Ristorante Pizzeria Corchia di Iasoni Nadia. Buon appetito!

Dustin

Rose and Dustin consider themselves simple yet eccentric, a vibe that infused every detail of their nuptials in Paros, Greece. From flipping a coin to see who would say their vows first, to serving ice cream instead of a wedding cake, their wedding day was all about having fun and being their true selves.

D EST I N AT I ONWEDDINGM AGAZINE .CA • 16

SETTING THE SCENE: The couple fell deeply in love during their first trip abroad together, to Santorini in 2021. To honour their love story, they returned to Greece to say “I do.” “We both thrive in travel so a destination wedding was always the plan, but we wanted a more authentic vibe for our big day so Paros it was!” says Rose. SWEET AND PRETTY: The destination spoke for itself, made all the more beautiful with olive branches that cascaded down family-style tables, dotted with orange roses and candles. For added sweetness, bouquets of marigolds and carnations were sprinkled with fresh rosemary and eucalyptus. “Green was our primary colour,” says Rose, who wore a gorgeous BHLDN lace gown. SOMETHING SPECIAL: The couple and their 40 guests were treated to a local feast complete with a lamb on a spit, pork souvlaki, a late-night gyro station and baklava. There was no bridal party (just their kids), their first dance was serenaded by a couple of friends, and their officiant was Dustin’s first mentor, who became specially ordained for the wedding.

Sherif

When deciding on a magical location to marry the man of her dreams, Sherif and Sarah thought of only one place that would do: Greenwater Lake Provincial Park, where her parents married 35 years prior. “It’s a sentimental location full of family memories,” she says.

D EST I NAT I ONWEDDINGM AGAZINE .CA • 18

THE SIMPLE THINGS: The Toronto couple wanted their wedding to be “elegant and simple,” with a white and green colour palette that spoke volumes. Their florist, Blossoms Florals, used white roses, ranunculus and gorgeous greenery in bouquets, canopies and centrepieces to achieve the sweetest of settings. TWO BECOME ONE: “Sharing Canadian family history with my husband’s immigrant family was so special,” says Sarah. “Everyone danced to polka and Egyptian music, and at one point, they put Sherif and I on chairs and hoisted us up in the air! Everyone partied until they kicked us off the dance floor.” THE LOOK & FOOD: Sarah wore an ivory Maudie by Willowby gown from Sash & Bustle with a lace bodice and flowy skirt, topped with a white Jasmine Bridal veil via Etsy. The couple’s 70 guests dined on Peppercorn Roast Beef and Chicken à la Grecque, followed by a midnight pierogi bar with all the fixins.

Out of this TRAVEL IS BACK, WHICH MEANS WHEN IT COMES TO DESTINATION WEDDINGS, THE SKY’S THE LIMIT. IF YOU’VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF A CEREMONY BEYOND THE BEACH, THESE WORLD-CLASS DESTINATIONS DELIVER ON ALL FRONTS, FROM HISTORY AND BEAUTY, TO ROMANCE AND INTRIGUE.

IRELAND No doubt romance can be found in every country in the world, but only one can lay claim to being the final resting place of St. Valentine himself. Ireland’s Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin has housed the remains of the patron saint of love since 1836, and today it draws countless couples each year seeking his blessing of their union. But this is just one of many reasons why Ireland ranks among the world’s most romantic destinations. Aside from its legendary love stories (Google the tragic tale of Diarmuid and Gráinne if you want a good cry), Ireland is famous for its fairytale castles and gorgeous manor houses, not to mention the rolling, green hills (said to come in 40 different shades) that have become the country’s hallmark. For a storybook wedding of the ages, Killyleagh Castle in County Down, a 365-acre estate overlooking the Ring of Gullion, Mourne and Cooley Mountains, offers several wedding packages complete with a fairy light canopy, Chiavari chairs and a red carpet and Prosecco welcome for the wedding couple. Other incredible wedding venues include the 800-year-old Ashford Castle in County Mayo, the iconic Guildhall in Derry-Londonderry known for its stunning stained-glass windows, Cliff at Lyons in rural Kildare that’s home to a collection of historic rose-clad buildings, and Killruddery, an 800-acre estate and bio-diverse farm south of Bray, just 40 minutes from Dublin Airport.

A country known for being ‘the land of fire and ice’ is sure to bring the drama. Located at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, Morocco, also known as ‘the land of the distant sunset,’ dazzles in a million different ways. HONG KONG In the city that never sleeps, there’s bound to be an endless number of ways to entertain and be entertained. This makes Hong Kong, with all its exotic flavours and cosmopolitan flair, a standout choice for a destination wedding. Located on China’s southern coast, it’s world-renowned for amazing nightlife (think rooftop bars, chic clubs and bustling night markets), incredible shopping (its famed shopping streets are brimming with bargains and one-of-a-kind finds), and cutting-edge art (the new M+ is Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture). But perhaps where Hong Kong steals the hearts of most is at its award-winning

restaurants and dai pai dongs (open-air food stalls). Dining is a cultural pastime here, so be sure to dig in! For out-of-this-world nuptials, say “I do” at Sky100 on the 100th floor of ICC, the tallest building in Hong Kong, which offers floor-toceiling views of Victoria Harbour and wedding packages that range from intimate cocktail receptions to stylish dinners in the sky. A quintessential Hong Kong experience, you can also charter the iconic aqualuna Chinese junk boat, which accommodates up to 80 guests and sails to a number of nearby destinations like Lamma Island and even Disneyland. And if it’s peak luxury you’re looking for, Hong Kong’s legendary hotel, The Peninsula, offers a fairtyale setting for weddings complete with full flower arrangements, custom menus and Rolls-Royce Phantom transport. discoverhongkong.com

NEW ZEALAND It’s often said that Mother Nature did some of her best work in New Zealand. Located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, it’s made up mainly of the North and South Islands, both vastly different, each worth a visit. The North is generally warmer, known for its white-sand beaches, beautiful hot springs and authentic Maori experiences. In the

larger South Island, you’ll marvel over giant glaciers and fjords, sample world-class food and wine, and try your hand at any number of extreme sports, from skiing in the Southern Alps to ice climbing at Aoraki/Mt. Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand. And though it takes a better part of a day to travel to, New Zealand is the ultimate pay-off that’s worth the time and distance. When it comes to unique wedding venues, New Zealand has no shortage of them, from Tree Church, a living, breathing chapel made of trees in Ohaupo, to any number of mountain peaks, made possible with Heli Weddings NZ and its fleet of helicopters. Movie buffs can opt to exchange vows at one of six venues on the Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata,

TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK, PATAGONIA, CHILE HONG KONG HOBBITON MOVIE SET, NEW ZEALAND

while oenophiles can book an intimate underground wine cellar ceremony at Black Barn in Hawkes Bay. And for a storybook wedding of the ages, the five-star Stoneridge Estate near Queenstown offers a range of packages, from heli-weddings to a chapel by the lake. newzealand.com

CHILE Oh, Chile, be still our heart. From the extreme north with the driest desert in the world, to tranquil lakes and dramatic volcanoes in the south, Chile has a charm that instantly pulls you in. In one trip, you can hit the beaches of Viña del Mar, sample world-renowned wines in Santiago, learn how to cattle ranch in northern Patagonia, sail through the fjords on your way to Cape Horn, and go horseback riding in Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, one of the most isolated parts of the world. A landscape of contrasts, Chile is a four-season destination, a tricontinental country and, for those planning a destination wedding, the perfect setting for love and romance. If you’re going all out for your wedding, The Singular Patagonia, Puerto Bories Hotel in the heart of Chilean Patagonia feels like a dream, with luxury rooms decked out with heated floors and 500-thread count Egyptian linens, several restaurants that highlight the region’s heritage, and a spa with breathtaking views of fjords and glaciers below. Casa del Bosque, one of Chile’s most prestigious family wineries, offers outdoor wedding celebrations in the Casablanca Valley, just one hour from Santiago, complete with a carefully crafted menu. And for a grand affair, The Ritz-Carlton, Santiago can host anywhere from 30 to 250 guests, with an entire team that takes care of all the details, from in-house audiovisual to flowers and catering. chile.travel

A WELCOME ARRIVAL ATTENDING A DESTINATION WEDDING IS NO SMALL THING. SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION FOR YOUR GUESTS BY WELCOMING THEM WITH THESE HEARTFELT GESTURES.

WELCOME GIFT BASKET Nothing says ‘thank you’ quite like a gift basket. Consider the destination and theme of your wedding when putting them together. If you’re having a beach wedding, use beach pails or beach totes and fill them with essentials like sunblock, mosquito repellant, hand sanitizer, sunglasses and paper fans. Getting hitched in wine country? Fill wine coolers or ice buckets with wine glasses, coasters, jams, artisanal breads and, of course, a bottle of wine. Be sure to add a few local goodies to highlight the destination, maps and brochures for self-guided exploration, and a handwritten note of thanks. Have each basket waiting for your guests, in their rooms, upon arrival as a welcome surprise.

complimentary transfer to the wedding venue on the day of the wedding. Leave a note in each room detailing the time and pick-up point, then have a shuttle bus roll up in style to take everyone to the ceremony. Looking for something more off-the-wall? Rent a streetcar, an old-fashioned trolley, a ferry or even a school bus, and load it with snacks and refreshments for your guests to enjoy.

POOL PARTY Set the tone for a fun-filled getaway with an epic pool party to kickstart the wedding festivities. Arrange food stations around the pool, hire a DJ, blow up some fun inflatables, and rent a few cabanas to create a VIP feel. You can leave invitations detailing the time and place of the party in everyone’s room upon arrival, and even provide fun accessories like leis or sunglasses as party favours.

Throwing a cocktail party the night before the wedding is a great way to greet and welcome your guests all at once. It also gives everyone the chance to meet, mingle and catch up in a more informal setting. Check with your hotel to see if you can book a private room, and serve hors d’oeuvres and delicious cocktails. You can also look into hosting a party off site, at a local restaurant or bar, preferably one within walking distance of the hotel.

VIDEO GREETING For tech-savvy couples, leave a note with a unique QR code in each guest’s room that links to a personalized video greeting. Be mindful of the environment when saying ‘I do’ with these eco-friendly tips

BOOK AN ECO-FRIENDLY RESORT. A growing number of hotels and resorts are answering the call to be more sustainable by eliminating single-use plastics, launching recycling programs, limiting water use, using solar panels, growing their own produce, doing beach cleanups and much more. Research local hotels in your chosen destination to see which ones are putting the environment first and incorporating sustainable measures.

CARBON OFFSET. Air travel produces up to 3% of global carbon dioxide emissions each year. But the good news is many airlines offer programs to offset the greenhouse gas emissions produced from a flight, for a small fee. This money would then go towards projects that reduce carbon dioxide elsewhere, from wind farming to forest protection. Research which airlines are doing their part to pitch in.

ECO ATTIRE AND ACCESSORIES. Going green can also translate into the threads you wear. Look for eco-friendly dress and suit designers who offer beautiful designs made with sustainable fabrics. Avoid leather and fur accessories, consider bouquets with flowers made from recycled material or paper, and wear family heirloom pieces, a more sentimental and sustainable option than buying new jewelry.

LIMIT THE GUEST LIST. Though you may be tempted to invite everyone you know and love, having a hundred people fly to your destination wedding will amount to significant carbon emissions. So invite just close family and friends, or keep it to a handful of guests, or even elope – the environment will thank you for it. ALTERNATIVE INVITATIONS. Did you know that recycling paper causes 35% less water pollution and 74% less air pollution than making virgin paper? The choice is obvious: using recycled paper for your wedding invitations is better for the planet. You can do one even better and send out evites instead, or simply email a link to your wedding website with all the important details.
