from the editor

As I flip through the pages of this issue, I’m reminded why we’ve loved doing what we do for more than 35 years. It’s because of you. Every couple who picks up this magazine for inspiration, every vendor who partners with us to bring dream weddings to life, and every family member or friend cheering along the way—you’re the reason Today’s Bride continues to grow, evolve, and celebrate love in all its forms. For over three decades, our mission has stayed the same: to be your trusted local resource for wedding planning. From your first “yes!” to your final “I do,” we’re honored to walk beside you through every joyful, stressful, and magical step of the journey.

To our advertisers and business partners, thank you for trusting us to tell your story and connect you with the couples who need your talent most. And to our readers, thank you for inviting us into one of the most meaningful seasons of your life. Your excitement keeps our passion alive year after year.

Whether you’re flipping through this magazine for ideas, advice, or a little inspiration, I hope it fills you with possibility and joy. Enjoy every page, and every moment leading up to your big day.

With heartfelt gratitude,

First and foremost, congratulations! This is a special time for you and your fiancé that you’ll cherish forever. You’re about to embark on a journey as you plan the wedding of your dreams. Our goal is to help you from “Yes” to “I Do” and touch on all the little things in between. Use this magazine as a guide, and the professionals within as resources as you plan your dream day.

Enjoy being engaged!

Bask in the celebration of your new relationship status. Whether you wait to start planning or are ready to hit the ground running, enjoy this time with your partner and all the events leading up to the special day.

Size your ring and research insurance

It’s not the most glamorous, but it’s necessary. You have a beautiful new piece of jewelry, and you want to make sure it fits correctly and is covered by insurance in case anything happens.

Drafting a guest list

Having a rough estimate for the number of guests you’re expecting will be important to know when picking a venue and creating a budget.

Choose a wedding date

Start by choosing your ideal season and month, then explore venues that fit your location and

guest count. Once you’ve set the date, the rest of your vendors will fall into place.

Create a budget

The average Northeast Ohio wedding costs $22,000$50,000. If anyone will be contributing to your wedding, get an idea of what they’re willing to provide so you know how much you have to spend and how much you need to save.

Make a wedding email

Over the next few months, you’ll be meeting a lot of people, businesses, and collecting tons of information. It’s convenient to have everything stored in one inbox.

Join TodaysBride.com

TodaysBride.com will unlock the start of the wedding planning process from top wedding vendors to a custom countdown to “I Do” to help you stay on track.

Keep on budget

Creating a wedding budget is one of the first and most important steps in your wedding planning journey. Start by having a conversation with your fiancé to determine who will be contributing what to the budget. Once you have a budget, think about your big-ticket vendors that need to be included and are likely to take up a large portion, like your venue, catering, photography, and entertainment. Nothing is set in stone until a contract is signed—your budget can and will shift as you prioritize what’s most important to you and your fiancé. Everyone is a high-end client in one category or another, whether it’s the perfect dress, stunning florals, or an unforgettable venue.

The best way to find vendors that fit within your budget is to get multiple quotes. This approach allows you to compare companies, services, and prices, letting you pick the one you’re most comfortable with. We included a master budget list to ensure you are thinking of all the things that may come up and should be considered so you don’t go over!

Don’t forget the tips!

One hidden cost you may not have accounted for is tips! Though gratuity may be included in the price of your package, review your contracts and check with your vendors to see whether tips are included or not. If you plan on tipping your wedding vendors, be sure to work it into your budget and decide who will be in charge of handing out the tips at the end of the night.

Although tipping isn’t required, it is definitely appreciated. Include a handwritten thank-you note as a token of your appreciation. Each and every one of your vendors put a lot of time and effort into making sure your day is exactly how you dreamed it would be.

Is a planner right for you?

Planning a wedding is stressful—there’s no way around it! Between researching vendors, managing payments, juggling décor ideas, and navigating family opinions, it can start to feel like a second full-time job. Most couples begin the process with little to no planning experience, which is where a wedding planner can make all the difference. A planner is part expert, part problem-solver, and part therapist—someone who turns chaos into calm and your Pinterest board into a real-life celebration. Whether you need full-service planning or just day-of coordination, having a professional in your corner ensures that your wedding vision comes to life smoothly and stress-free.

Planning advisor

Wedding planners come with experience, trusted vendor connections, and insider knowledge that can save you time and money. They know who fits your style, how to stretch your budget, and how to avoid common mistakes.

Stress reliever

Your only job on your wedding day should be to celebrate—not troubleshoot. A planner handles the details, keeps everything running on time, and solves problems before you even know they exist, so you can stay relaxed and in the moment.

Fairy godmother

You have a life to live and a fiancé to love. Let your planner handle the logistics! They’ll turn your ideas into a cohesive vision, keep you on trend, and make sure every detail shines. You still make the decisions, but they make the magic happen.

Trust us: you won’t regret hiring a wedding planner. You will always be the final authority on what your wedding day looks like and how it is planned. But with some extra help, you get to hand over the stress so that all you’ll remember from your big day are the fun parts!

Questions to ask wedding planners:

• How long have you been planning weddings?

• What types of planning do you offer—full service, partial, day-of?

• How many weddings do you plan per year?

• What specific tasks will you handle, and what will still be our responsibility?

• What’s your approach to design? Do you help with overall style, color palette, and décor ideas?

• Do you have a portfolio to see or references to talk to?

• Can you negotiate rates with my vendors?

• Do you use online planning tools or shared documents to keep organized throughout the planning?

• How often will we talk or meet during the planning process?

• Will you be there the day of?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Different planning packages

If you’re asking yourself, “Where do I start?” or “What am I missing?” you’re not alone. You’re a newbie at planning an event for 100+ people, but there are some people who have years of experience planning hundreds of weddings. Here are some of the ways you can take full advantage of all the wisdom and guidance a wedding planner can offer

In-house or venue coordinator

This type of planner comes with your venue and does very little actual planning. They focus, instead, on the execution of your event in regard to the venue. They’ll set up and tear down your chairs and tables, coordinate the venue staff, and handle the food and bar.

Day-of coordinator

Contrary to the name, this planner actually begins 2-4 weeks before your wedding. They will schedule a site visit and contact all of your vendors to get acquainted with your plans. On the day of, they’ll coordinate with your vendors, direct them, assist with set-up and tear-down, and keep you on schedule throughout the day.

Month-of or partial planning

This type of service does everything a day-of coordinator does, but with a few extra weeks of service. They’ll make final vendor

payments, schedule the day-of timeline, communicate final details to vendors, determine vendor arrivals and delivery, and remind you of details you may have forgotten.

Full-service planning

Also known as all-inclusive, this planning service is exactly what it sounds like. You hire them right after your engagement, and they guide you through every step of the planning process. They’ll research vendors, recommend those that fit your budget and vision, set up appointments and venue visits, negotiate and hire vendors, offer advice, answer questions, supply a budget, and provide monthly timelines. They’ll assist with your ceremony rehearsal, handle set up for your ceremony and reception, keep you on schedule, arrange deliveries, manage any crises, and direct guests. They can even help you obtain a marriage license and provide guidance on changing your name.

Complete Weddings + Events www.completewedo.com/akron 330-433-7147 • lisa.aurand@completewedo.com

How can couples effectively manage their wedding budget without sacrificing their vision? Start by asking yourselves what vibe you want—this helps you focus on atmosphere instead of outdated traditions. Once you know your vision, choose the 2–3 things you care most about (like photography, music, or food), splurge there, and simplify the rest. One of the smartest ways to save is to hire a planning team that also offers DJ, photography, planning, and photo booth services. Bundling with one trusted company means discounts, simplified coordination, and more room in the budget for what truly matters.Your guests won’t remember if you skipped chair covers or had DIY centerpieces—they’ll remember the love, the vibe, and that your wedding felt authentically you.

What’s your best advice for couples to stay calm and stress-free on the wedding day? The secret is having one expert team manage it all. As your planner, we not only design and coordinate your timeline but also provide in-house services like DJ, photography, and more. That means fewer vendors to juggle, no miscommunication, and one dedicated crew making sure every detail runs smoothly. Our couples get to relax, stay present, and enjoy their day knowing everything is handled start to finish by the same professionals.

Details by Dr. Arlonda www.detailsbydrarlonda.com 216-310-7573 • drarlondastevens@gmail.com

What do you wish you could tell all your couples or couples looking to inquire about planning services? I’d encourage them to incorporate wellness into their planning process, making sure that they are getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, managing stress, and taking time for each other outside of the planning activities. I want my couples to show up on their wedding day feeling confident both emotionally and mentally. They’ll be beautiful inside and out and able to enjoy every moment of the wedding day. The end goal is to be wed and well!

Planning a wedding is overwhelming, where do you recommend couples start? I suggest couples start with the vision of their wedding and ask themselves these questions: What would your ideal wedding day look like? What is the feeling they want to experience? How do they want their guests to experience their wedding? After that, determine the budget. Once they have a vision and a budget, then they can start planning and creating the wedding of their dreams within that budget!

How do you add a couple’s personality to a wedding? I ask for 3 to 5 adjectives to describe what they want their wedding to be. Once I know that, I help to ensure that those adjectives are apparent in just about every aspect of the wedding, down to the tiniest details!

Lisa Aurand Dr. Arlonda Stevens

We asked four of Northeast Ohio’s top wedding planners to share their insider tips, honest advice, and answers to the questions every engaged couple wants to know. From budgets and timelines to design and day-of logistics, these pros have seen it all—and they’re here to help make your planning process smoother, less stressful, and a whole lot more fun.

Covesa Kelly Events www.covesakellyevents.com 888-266-0681 • covesa@covesakellyevents.com

How can couples make their wedding day truly reflect their personalities and relationship? To make the day personal, think beyond current trends and focus on the elements that are unique to you as a couple. Consider choosing an unconventional venue that speaks to your interests or a meaningful moment in your relationship, or include interactive elements to create a unique experience for your guests. By incorporating your hobbies, cultural traditions, or special places and moments from your relationship, your wedding will be an authentic reflection of you and your partner.

What is something couples overlook in the wedding planning process? Timing is often overlooked, not necessarily due to a lack of care, but a lack of awareness. Couples may not realize how long a ceremony takes with added elements, how long it takes for a bridal party of twenty to walk down the aisle, or the time required to greet all their guests. Accurate timing is crucial and frequently underestimated.

What are some unique ways to personalize a venue? Signage can be a lot of fun. I particularly like welcome signs with clever messages, witty cocktail napkins, and interactive games where guests can upload photos and videos from their phones to a shared platform for the couple to view later.

Eileen Benson Events www.instagram.com/eileenbensonevents 330-329-7968 • eab1121@aol.com

What should couples do first after getting engaged? Take a few days to soak it all in and enjoy the excitement! Once you’re ready to plan, start by creating a guest list from both families—your head count will guide venue choices. Next, book your ceremony and reception locations, then secure your key vendors. Once those major pieces are in place, you can relax and have fun with the details. The most sought after vendors get booked over a year in advance.

Why is hiring a wedding planner worth it? There’s a saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” A planner helps you avoid costly and stressful mistakes, like not scheduling enough time for hair, makeup, or transportation. We keep the day running smoothly and act as a mediator when opinions differ. A good planner matches you with reliable vendors who fit your budget, personality, and vision, ensuring every detail comes together seamlessly.

What’s your best advice for couples to stay calm and stress-free on the wedding day? Let go of your wedding binder the week of! Do all the pre-planning with professionals, then enjoy your special week and day. Remember, you hired a planner exactly for this reason!

What’s the difference?

There are several differences between a wedding planner and a venue coordinator. Knowing what they do can help you make a decision on whom you should rely on for what at your wedding.

Wedding planners

You can hire a wedding planner’s services to plan months before the wedding, to prepare the month of the wedding, or just to assist on that day. Not only will they recommend vendors, but they’ll deal with the negotiations, communications, and timelines. They’ll handle any crises that arise so you can simply enjoy your day.

Not sure how much food to order? How much cake to serve?

How many tablecloths you’ll need? Your wedding planner will make those decisions while keeping you within budget.

Wedding planners can also help with design—from conception to execution. If you have an idea of what look you’re going for but aren’t quite sure how to execute it, you can give your wedding planner some inspiration to go off of and trust them to create the wedding of your dreams.

Venue coordinators

Some venues will offer the services of a venue coordinator when you book with them. This person will recommend some vendors from their preferred vendor list. If the venue also provides catering, they will help you choose a menu and bar options and will keep the kitchen staff on schedule throughout the reception.

While they will set up your reception and can ensure that things run smoothly, they aren’t expected to help with all details of the wedding, like negotiating or communicating with other vendors or planning out the timeline. Their primary responsibility is to manage the venue’s logistics, leaving other aspects of the wedding planning to you or your wedding planner. Typically, a venue coordinator doesn’t cost an extra fee, as they are an added perk when renting venue facilities.

5 tips for hiring a great wedding planner

On your wedding day, you can either be the bride or the wedding planner—it’s very difficult to be both. Our advice: save yourself the trouble and hire a professional! The following five tips will help you find the perfect wedding planner!

1. Experience

Think of this as a job interview. Start with experience! Short-list potential candidates based on the kinds of weddings they have done, types of families they have handled, and wedding venues they have worked at.

2. Referrals

No one can guide you better than your own family and friends. Ask around to see who hired a wedding planner for their big event and ask for a list of recommendations. That way, you can get the real scoop from previous couples.

3. Budget

Know how much you’re willing to spend and then manage your budget thereafter. Keep in mind that a professional has established relationships with vendors and may be able to obtain discounts to help stretch your dollar even further.

4. Choose a theme

Many wedding planners like to work around a certain theme. Have some ideas for themes, and then let the wedding planner do the rest! For ideas, check out Today’s Bride Real Weddings and Styled Shoots, as well as our Instagram!

5. Discuss openly

Your planner must know your dreams and expectations in order to give you your fairy tale wedding. Remember that a planner should have lots of questions for you too, in an effort to determine your wishes, needs, budget, and more.

Shopping for your wedding dress is one of the most momentous parts of your wedding planning journey. But, it requires a little bit of planning and some key background knowledge to prepare for the fitting room and have a successful trip!

Bring someone you trust

Although you do not want your team to swoon over every dress you try on (not helpful when it comes to making a decision), having the support of people who know exactly what you want will make your choice easier. Bring three or four people who are honest but not harsh, who know your vision, and who will support your decision.

Don’t invite too many people

Avoid inviting your entire entourage. When shopping, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the contrasting opinions. You’ll get confused and question what styles you actually like. Never settle for a dress you don’t love just because everyone in your entourage loves it.

Keep an open mind

Your consultant has years of experience and knows what they’re doing. Trust that they know what styles will look good on you, and be open to trying on dresses that don’t necessarily fit your vision! You never know what you might fall in love with, and it won’t hurt your consultant’s feelings if you hate it.

Questions to ask bridal shops:

• I found this dress. Do you carry this designer and style?

• Can I purchase a gown off the rack?

• How long does it take for a dress order to come in?

• Will I have the same consultant every time I visit?

• Are alterations done in-house?

• If not, do you have a list of alteration companies?

• What customization options do I have?

• How many fittings will I have?

• What is included? (garment bag, steaming, dress storage, etc.)

• Do you provide gown cleaning?

• Do you provide gown preservation?

• What is the typical deposit on a wedding dress?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Get ready to shop

You’ve probably spent at least one afternoon binge-watching a marathon of Say Yes to the Dress and feel fully prepared for your dress shopping appointment. However, your scheduled appointment time will fly by quickly, and the last thing you want to do is leave the store disappointed, discouraged, and empty-handed. We have a few tips to prepare for this experience and ensure you find the dress of your dreams!

Start looking 12+ months before your wedding

It generally takes six months to receive your gown, and you should allow for at least two fittings to ensure a perfect fit. However, giving too much time between falling in love with your gown and walking down the aisle in it can lead to questioning your decision, and nerves about it fitting properly. Twelve months will allow enough time to find the gown and have it ordered, shipped, and fitted.

Limit your store selection to three or four

If you try to stop by every bridal shop in the area, you’ll end up forgetting which dresses you tried on, which dresses you loved, and where you want to return. Research beforehand to choose shops that offer different designers. This will make it easier to remember which store had the dress you loved and will allow you to see different styles.

Bring photos of gowns you love

Research beforehand to get an idea of what kind of dress you’re looking for. Do you like a lot of beading or vintage lace? Do you prefer a tight bodice or loose-flowing? What type of materials are you drawn to? Is there a designer you absolutely love? Coming to your appointment with these details can help narrow down your selection quickly and make it easier to find your gown.

Don’t try on dresses outside of your budget

While falling in love with a dress that is a few hundred dollars over your budget works for some, you’ll have to pick your priorities. Where can you spend less in order to afford this dress? If it’s worth it to you, feel free to stretch your budget! But if you want to stick to a specific number, avoid trying on dresses you can’t afford.

Things to keep in mind

Wear nude underwear and a strapless bra

If you don’t want to be completely exposed, we recommend wearing full-coverage nude underwear and a strapless bra to the salon. Wear a bra with a minimal amount of padding. Some dresses come with built-in padding, and you want to get the best idea of how the dress will look and feel on your wedding day.

Bring heels similar in height to wedding shoes

If you find “the dress,” the consultant and alterations staff will take your measurements to order your gown. It’s important to wear shoes similar in height to your wedding shoes so there are minimal alteration changes to be made when the dress arrives.

Don’t order your dress in a size too

small

Some brides order a dress in a smaller size as motivation to lose weight. It’s a lot easier to remove fabric than it is to add more, so it’s smarter to order a dress in your current size and fit it to your new body after weight loss. However, you don’t want to end up with a dress that’s too big weeks before your wedding. Have a realistic goal of how much weight you want to lose, and talk to your consultant to decide what size is best to order.

When you have your “moment,” stop

Shopping is addictive, and you will always wonder if there is something better out there. Trust that the dress you love is “The One” and that you’ll look beautiful walking down the aisle. Is there a dress that you’d love more? Who knows! As long as this dress makes you feel absolutely gorgeous, stop looking for something better. Otherwise, you’ll never stop shopping!

Perfecting the fit

Your wedding gown should make you feel confident, comfortable, and completely you. Even the most stunning designer dress may not fit flawlessly right off the rack. That’s where alterations come in. From taking in the bodice to hemming the hemline, skilled seamstresses ensure your dress hugs your body in all the right places. Just remember—this finishing touch comes at a cost, so plan ahead when setting your overall wedding budget.

Incorporate alteration costs into your budget

When calculating your dress budget, factor in the cost of alterations from the start. Depending on the complexity of your gown, alterations can range anywhere from $200 to $1,000 or more. Whether you’re shortening sleeves, adjusting straps, or adding a bustle, each change takes time and precision. To avoid last-minute surprises, ask your bridal salon or seamstress for an estimate upfront and schedule your fittings well before the big day.

Recycling your alterations

Don’t toss those leftover scraps of fabric or lace just yet! With a little creativity, you can repurpose them into special keepsakes or details for your wedding day. Consider wrapping your bouquet with a strip of your dress material, crafting a pocket square or bow tie for your partner, or using the lace in your invitation suite photos or garter. These small touches not only make your celebration more sustainable, but they also weave sentimental meaning into every detail.

Must-have accessories

After you put on your dress and do your hair and makeup, you may find that there’s something missing. These must-have accessories will take your look from wow to WHOA! And don’t forget to include something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue for good luck on your wedding day!

Veil

The veil is one of the most iconic pieces to creating your wedding day look. Anyone can wear a white dress, but a veil makes you undoubtedly a bride. Whether you choose a cathedral-length veil or a blusher over your face, add a personal touch with lace appliques and embroidery. Though some brides have chosen to forgo this accessory, we still think it’s a vital piece to creating that classic look.

Popular veil lengths include:

• Birdcage: A short, vintage-inspired veil that covers just part of the face—perfect for retro or city-chic brides.

• Blusher: A single layer worn over the face during the ceremony, adding a soft, romantic touch.

• Elbow-Length: Falls around the elbows and pairs beautifully with most gown styles.

• Fingertip: A versatile, modern favorite that grazes your fingertips and complements nearly every silhouette.

• Chapel-Length: Extends slightly beyond your gown’s hemline for a touch of drama without overwhelming your look.

• Cathedral-Length: Extends beyond the train of your gown, creating a breathtaking, grand effect that’s ideal for formal ceremonies.

Undergarments

You might be gifted some lingerie at your bachelorette party that’s perfect for your wedding night, but it’s not practical to wear throughout the wedding festivities! When choosing which undergarments you’ll wear during the day, consider the features of your dress. If your gown has an exposed back, you’ll need to go bra-less or wear a sticky bra. If your bodice offers no support, consider wearing a padded strapless bra.

Jewelry

It’s important to choose pieces that don’t distract from the dress. Dangling earrings are great for sweetheart necklines, but you should wear studs with an illusion neck. Bracelets should be worn with strapless or halter gowns, but not with long-sleeved gowns. Try on different jewelry options while shopping or at a fitting to see what works best with your dress.

Shoes

Deciding which shoes to wear on your wedding day can be difficult You want to find a pair that is both fashionable and comfortable enough to dance in all night long. You may want to consider wearing heels to the ceremony and bringing flats to dance in. We suggest breaking in your shoes about two weeks before the wedding and adding gel or foam inserts. Don’t forget to bring your shoes with you to fittings to ensure that the length of your gown is just right!

It’s important to note that not all designers carried by these retailers are listed here—and they might not carry every dress that these designers offer! If you’re looking for a specific dress or designer, the best thing to do is to reach out to a shop and see if they carry it in advance. And if they don’t, ask if they carry any similar styles! Plus, ask about what modifications can be made to each gown.

Attire and tasks

As a mom, you’ve already mastered the most important skills needed for the wedding planning process: you’re a warm listener, a chief cheerleader, and a source of unwavering support for your children. While you will be there to help the couple make decisions every step of the way, there are a few specific tasks you should prepare for.

Attire

One important responsibility is selecting your attire. Timing and thoughtful consideration are crucial here. Mothers should ideally begin shopping for their dresses a year out from the wedding to allow ample time for fittings, alterations, and coordination with the bridal party’s attire. It’s also important for mothers to consult with each other and the couple to ensure their outfits align with the wedding’s color scheme and formality. While their dresses shouldn’t match, they should complement the overall aesthetic of the day.

Shopping

When shopping for dresses, it’s helpful to explore a variety of options from bridal boutiques to formalwear shops and department stores. Mother-of dresses offer a wider range of colors and styles, designed with sophistication in mind. Opting for an outfit that balances elegance with comfort will allow you to enjoy the festivities without worrying about wardrobe malfunctions or discomfort. Having a hard time finding the perfect mother-of dress? Don’t be afraid to consider a bridesmaid style as long as it’s different from what the bridesmaids in the wedding are wearing!

Once attire is chosen, there are plenty of other meaningful ways mothers can lend a hand throughout the planning process.

Tasks for all mothers:

• Discuss the wedding budget with the couple, including what you are willing to pay for and the number of guests.

• Draw up the guest list for your side of the family and close friends.

• Assist in communicating with vendors.

• Help book hotel blocks for guests.

• Spread the word about where the couple is registered.

• Call any of your guests who have not responded.

• Act as hostess at the wedding and reception, ensuring guests are comfortable.

• Participate in parts of the ceremony, such as unity ceremonies, when needed.

Mother of the bride:

• Plan, host, and pay for the engagement party and/or bridal shower.

• Help find the wedding dress of the bride’s dreams, as well as other wedding attire and accessories.

• Possibly escort the bride down the aisle.

Mother of the groom:

• Help plan, host, and pay for the rehearsal dinner.

• Perform the mother-son dance at the reception.

Bridesmaid duties

Being a bridesmaid is a huge honor but also a huge commitment. A lot of time, money, and patience is required from your closest friends to help make your wedding absolutely perfect—and that’s just the beginning! Share these few things below with your bridesmaids to help prepare them to tackle any task as a dutiful bridesmaid.

Planning and hosting parties

The wedding party may be in charge of planning and throwing both the bridal shower and the bachelorette party. This means brainstorming game ideas, researching locations, chipping in on the costs of decor, food, and prizes, helping decorate, and assisting with hosting duties. Be sure to confer with the bride to see if there are dates that do not work with her schedule, if she has any specific wishes or expectations, if there are any dietary guidelines to be followed, and ask her for a guest list.

Help choose the bridesmaid dresses

You may be asked to help pick out some options for the bridesmaid dresses about seven to eight months before the big day. While you might be the one wearing the dress, this is not the time to make your opinions known. If you find yourself moments away from saying, “Spaghetti straps are the worst,” or, “Magenta isn’t my color,” remember one thing: this day isn’t about you.

However, it is perfectly acceptable to ask the bride to stick to a budget. The bride doesn’t want you to break the bank or go into debt for her wedding—just don’t be too restrictive. When addressing the budget, try not to come off as aggressive or demanding. Simply ask kindly if there’s any way you could stay under a certain dollar amount to ease expenses.

One way to do this is by having mix-and-match dresses. Whether they’re different styles in the same color or different shades in the same color wheel, this allows bridesmaids to show their style, feel comfortable, and stay within their own budget. Another way to save is to buy in-store vs. online. When you buy online, you have to pay for shipping and other fees, and you’ll most likely need alterations or have to exchange your dress for a different size. These costs can add up quickly, so shop smart!

Questions to ask about bridesmaid dresses:

• Do you carry multiple designers for bridesmaid dresses?

• Can you mix and match styles/colors within the same collection?

• Are there options for maternity or plus-size bridesmaids?

• How long does it take to ship a dress?

• How far in advance should bridesmaids place their orders?

• Can bridesmaid dresses be altered in-house?

• Will the dresses be pressed before pick-up?

• Do you offer a discount to my bridesmaids if I buy my wedding dress from you? If so, how much?

Helping with wedding planning tasks

Although this may not be asked of you, be prepared and willing to help the bride with any wedding planning tasks. This could be fun stuff, like going with her to pick out the dress or helping to choose the cake flavors. Or, it could be something a little less fun, like doing DIY crafts or calling guests who haven’t yet RSVP’d.

Be a sounding board

The bride has been planning this day since childhood. With Pinterest, Instagram influencers, and bridal magazines, she’s likely to have inspiration overload! Listen to her ideas and offer your opinions and advice, but be gentle and read the context clues. If she seems genuinely excited about an idea that you’re not fond of, be supportive. Just because something is not your style doesn’t mean it’s not a valid idea. Also, if she needs advice on how to deal with her nosy motherin-law or just needs to vent, offer a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on. Most importantly, keep whatever she says to yourself. You don’t want to be the reason she has to deal with drama moments before her wedding.

Attending pre-wedding parties

Emergencies excluded, there is no excuse for missing the pre-wedding parties. These include: the bridal shower, bachelorette party, wedding dress shopping trips (if invited), bridesmaid dress shopping trips, ceremony rehearsal, and rehearsal dinner. The majority of these events happen on separate days. Being a bridesmaid is a huge time

commitment! But as a member of the wedding party, you need to do your best to show up. If you do have a prior engagement, let the bride know far in advance that you won’t be able to make it, so she can make arrangements if need be.

Keeping the bride sane

The most important task of a bridesmaid is to calm the bride’s nerves, ease her fears and stresses, and keep her sane. You might have to deal with some bridezilla moments. As a true friend, you’ve probably seen her break down before and know the best ways to comfort her. Dealing with some yelling or comforting a bride in hysterics is part of the job description. Try not to let her outbursts get on your nerves or stress you out. Keep calm and help her see what really matters—the love she has for her fiancé.

Handling any issues that arise on the wedding day

If the bride chooses not to hire a day-of planner, this responsibility falls to the parents and wedding party. If a vendor needs directions, it starts to rain, the rings are lost, or the bride or groom gets cold feet, it is up to you to come up with a solution and communicate it to the proper people.

More than just bridesmaids

From start to finish, bridesmaids are the bride’s biggest supporters, helping plan, organize, and celebrate every step of the way. No matter how small the task, bridesmaids teamwork and friendship help make the wedding planning and day truly special.

CEREMONY & OFFICIANTS

Questions to ask officiants:

• Will you give a speech or sermon?

• Can we choose the readings?

• Will we have input in the vows?

• Will you perform the ceremony at our venue?

• How do you handle unity ceremonies or other rituals?

• How do you personalize ceremonies for couples?

• Do you require premarital counseling?

• Will you attend the rehearsal?

ceremony sites:

• May we bring in our own officiant?

• Do you have a bridal suite?

• Are there any restrictions for decorations, vendors, or music?

• Is there a dress code? (know the guidelines before buying your wedding dress)

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Finding an officiant

Your wedding ceremony is one of the most meaningful parts of your big day, and the right officiant can help make it sentimental—and, more importantly, legal! Choosing between a professional and asking a friend to officiate is an important decision, so let’s break it down.

Who to ask

Couples often face the decision of whether to ask a friend to officiate their wedding or to hire a professional. While a friend can add a deeply personal touch, a professional officiant brings experience and expertise to ensure your ceremony runs smoothly.

Professional officiants

Hiring a professional officiant offers many advantages over asking a friend to officiate your wedding. Their expertise in ceremony timing, presentation, and legal requirements ensures everything flows smoothly, whether you want a relaxed or formal event. Professionals keep key moments on track, like photo ops, and are prepared to handle last-minute changes with ease. They allow your friends and family to fully enjoy the day without

the pressure of officiating. They can balance personalization with structure, creating a meaningful yet polished ceremony. With a portfolio, reviews, and certifications, you can trust a professional to deliver a reliable and seamless experience, providing peace of mind, especially when recommended by trusted sources like Today’s Bride.

Asking a friend

Hiring a friend as your wedding officiant can bring a unique, personal touch to your ceremony. Your friend likely knows you and your fiancé well, allowing them to craft a ceremony that feels deeply personal and meaningful, filled with inside jokes or shared memories that resonate with your guests. They can create a relaxed and intimate atmosphere, making the ceremony feel like a celebra-

tion among loved ones. Additionally, it’s often a more budget-friendly option and can help create a lasting memory for both you and your friend officiating. While they may not have formal experience, their emotional connection to you and your fiancé can add a level of sincerity and warmth that is hard to replicate.

Legality

Whichever way you go, the most important thing to consider while choosing your officiant is making sure they are legally allowed to marry you. In Ohio, ministers ordained online must register with the Secretary of State’s office for a marriage to be legal. It’s important to ask to see both proof of ordainment and registration. After all, you want to make sure your marriage is official on your wedding day!

KT SHIELDS PHOTOS

Types of ceremonies

It’s easy to get caught up in planning your wedding reception, but it’s important to remember the true significance of the day. Wedding ceremonies are not one-size-fits-all events, so it’s essential to choose a style that feels personal and meaningful to both you and your partner.

Civil ceremonies

A civil ceremony is a non-religious wedding that focuses primarily on the legal aspects of marriage, such as the exchange of vows and the signing of the marriage license. These ceremonies offer flexibility and can be customized to suit your personal style and preferences. Whether you want a simple, elegant service or a more playful, inclusive celebration, your officiant can tailor the ceremony to reflect your relationship and vision.

Religious ceremonies

While a civil ceremony is enough to make your marriage legally official, many couples also want their church or religious community to recognize their union as well. Religious ceremonies, whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, or from another faith, often follow long-standing traditions and rituals. Each religion has specific customs, prayers, and rites that may be integral to include in the ceremony.

Non-denominational ceremonies

A non-denominational ceremony is a type of wedding that is spiritual or religious in nature but is not tied to any specific religious denomination or tradition. It is often officiated by someone who may be spiritual or ordained but does not adhere to a particular faith or set of religious rules. This type of ceremony offers more flexibility for couples who want a meaningful, spiritual service without strictly following the rituals or customs of a single religion. Non-denominational ceremonies are often personalized to reflect the couple’s values, beliefs, and preferences, making them ideal for interfaith couples or those seeking a more inclusive approach.

Vow renewal ceremonies

Whether you’ve been married for 5 or 50 years, a vow renewal ceremony is a special way to reaffirm your commitment after years of marriage. It can mark a significant milestone, such as an anniversary, overcoming challenges, or entering a new phase in life. Vow renewals also provide a chance to express gratitude, rekindle romance, or include family and friends who couldn’t attend the original wedding. While an officiant isn’t necessary, many couples choose one to help guide the ceremony and add a sense of formality or meaning to the occasion.

JUSTIN GAMBLE PHOTOGRAPHY

Getting you to I Do

This list makes finding the “who” and “where” of your wedding ceremony easy! Need a place of worship, ceremony site, or officiant? We have a few in mind.

The perfect setting

Choosing the right setting for your wedding ceremony is just as important as choosing the right words. Some venues include a ceremony space, while others are designed for receptions only. Even if your venue offers both, you may prefer the idea of saying “I do” somewhere more personal, scenic, or meaningful before the celebration beings.

Religious ceremonies

If faith plays a central role in your relationship, a traditional church, synagogue, or temple might feel like the most meaningful place to exchange vows. Be sure to confirm availability early, as popular sanctuaries often book well in advance, and ask about requirements such as pre-marital counseling or membership.

Outdoor + scenic spots

For couples drawn to nature, consider saying “I do” surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors. Local favorites like Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Cleveland Metroparks offer spaces for

unforgettable ceremonies. They often allow ceremony-only reservations, giving you the freedom to host your reception elsewhere. Keep in mind you’ll need a backup plan in case of inclement weather if you choose an outdoor ceremony-only spot.

Venue Ceremonies

If convenience and simplicity are priorities, consider hosting your ceremony and reception at the same location. You’ll save on transportation logistics and can seamlessly transition from “I do” to dinner and dancing. Just be sure to ask your venue about ceremony fees, setup times, and backup weather options if your vows will be outdoors.

4:30PM – Ceremony begins

4:31PM – Grandparents and parents are seated

4:33PM – Groom, groomsmen, and officiant take positions

4:35PM – Bridesmaids, flower girl, and ring bearer make their way down the aisle

4:38PM – Bride’s entrance

4:40PM – Welcome and opening remarks

4:42PM – Reading(s)

4:46PM – Exchange of vows

4:50PM – Exchange of rings

4:52PM – Unity ceremony and/or musical interlude

4:56PM – Declaration of intent and pronouncement of marriage

4:58PM – First kiss and introduction of the couple

5:00PM – Recessional and optional receiving line

Every ceremony looks a little different, and that’s what makes yours special. Along with the traditional processional, vows, and ring exchange, you can incorporate personal touches to make the moment your own. Consider including a unity ceremony, like lighting a candle, blending sand, or planting a tree, to symbolize your bond. You might add a reading or poem that reflects your love story, a prayer or moment of silence to honor passed loved ones, or even a musical performance by a friend. For religious or cultural traditions, communion, handfasting, or signing the marriage license during the ceremony can add meaningful moments. Whatever you choose, let your ceremony reflect who you are as a couple.

RECEPTION VENUES

What to consider when touring venues

This is your first big step in planning your wedding! Once you have a venue, you have a wedding date. Below are a few things to keep in mind and consider as you tour possible venues.

1. Location

While the location itself has to fit your theme and vision (rustic, industrial, urban, nautical, etc.), there are other aspects about the location that you should consider. For instance, how close are the nearest hotels? Are there scenic spots nearby for your wedding photos? How far is it from your ceremony venue? Answering these questions will help make the day of your wedding seamless and stress-free.

2. Hidden costs

You’ll want to go into your meeting with a budget in mind, but the number you’re presented with may not be the same as what you see on the bill. A venue may sound affordable at first, but then you realize that tables, chairs, and linens aren’t included in that price. That’s a huge hit to your budget! Find out if you’re expected to use vendors from their preferred list, whether they require a minimum number of guests, or have a minimum spend requirement.

3. Privacy

Your wedding day is one of the most intimate moments in your life, so take note of how private the venue is. Are there other banquet rooms within the space that may also be rented that weekend? Will there be any renovations going on? You don't want is to hear a construction crew down the hall or share common space with another event. Similarly, if you’re getting married in a more public spot— like a park or garden—you’ll want to speak with the coordinator about ensuring privacy.

4. Parking + traffic

Parking is something a lot of couples forget to consider when looking at venues. However, it can cause a lot of stress on your wedding day. For instance, most barns have a grassy parking lot, which can turn to mud if it rains (not great for heels!). If you’re getting married in the city, your guests may have to search for street parking or pay a fee in a lot. Ask about the number of parking spots available, handicap spots, and valet service. You should also note traffic patterns around the time of your wedding.

5. Management

Note where the restrooms are located, and take a look inside. Are they clean and well-stocked? Is the trash emptied, and are the soap dispensers full? Throughout the rest of the space, are there any burnt-out light bulbs or weird smells? You’ll want the venue staff to be attentive and proactive on your wedding day, so it’s important to see what condition they keep the space in. Ask to visit when they are preparing for another event so you can see how they are dressed and how the space looks.

6. Vendor list

Ask potential venues if they exclusively work with certain vendors. Do they require or prefer that you work with certain DJs, caterers, florists, photographers, or decorators? If you previously had someone in mind, this may restrict you from hiring them. We highly recommend that you research the vendors on their list before booking the venue to be sure you like their work and can afford their prices.

7. Indoor/outdoor

Are there indoor and outdoor locations at your venue? While this is not a necessity, if you want an outdoor wedding, having an indoor location will serve as a great backup in case of inclement weather. If you’re planning an indoor wedding, it may be nice to have a patio for your cocktail hour or as a place for guests to escape to later on in the night. Plus, arches, gazebos, water, and bridges can be beautiful backdrops for wedding photos.

8. Theme + features

The venue's style and theme play a significant role in determining the ideal location. Are you looking for a space with floor-toceiling windows? A barn typically doesn’t offer that. Are you a boho bride? Look for a field or warehouse. More of a traditional princess bride? A ballroom is the way to go.

Reception order of events

After “I do,” it’s time to celebrate! Your reception is where the formalities fade and the fun begins. From the first toast to the last dance, having a clear order of events keeps the evening running smoothly so you can focus on making memories. While every wedding is unique, this sample timeline offers a great starting point to plan your celebration.

5:00PM – Cocktail hour begins

5:45PM – Guests are invited to find their seats

6:00PM – Wedding party and newlyweds introduced

6:10PM – First dance as a married couple

6:15PM – Parent dances (father-daughter, mother-son, or alternatives)

6:25PM – Welcome speech and blessing (optional)

6:30PM – Dinner service begins

7:15PM – Toasts and speeches

7:40PM– Cake cutting or dessert service

8:00PM – Open dance floor

8:45PM – Bouquet toss, garter toss, or fun group photo (optional)

9:50PM – Last dance of the night

10:00PM – Grand exit or send-off

10:01PM – Vendor breakdown and cleanup

No two receptions are exactly alike, and that’s the beauty of it! While most follow a general flow of dinner, toasts, and dancing, your celebration can include special touches that make it feel uniquely yours. Sneak away for a few golden-hour photos as the sun sets or surprise everyone with a late-night snack or food truck. Some couples even end the evening with a private last dance before their send-off. Your DJ and wedding planner will help keep the evening running smoothly and on schedule, but remember—it’s your day. Don’t be afraid to tailor the timeline to fit your vision and vibe.

• Is there a fee to extend the reception time?

• Do you have a ceremony space?

• What is the capacity for the ceremony space?

Outdoor weddings

Remembering to grab your own umbrella is one thing, but it’s a much bigger task to worry about keeping yourself and your guests dry and entertained at an outdoor wedding. It’s impossible to know exactly what kind of weather your wedding day will bring, but with some planning, you can prevent bad weather from ruining your big day.

In case of heat

• You’ll need to weatherproof your makeup for a summer celebration—no bride enjoys having foundation running down her face. Talk to your stylist to come up with a look that works.

• Use fan-style programs; they’re creative and functional.

• Hand out mini battery-operated fans as favors. Guests will definitely appreciate the gesture on a muggy day!

• Serve beverages before and after the ceremony. Most guests won’t have time to stop and get a drink somewhere, but they might love to grab a water or lemonade on the way to their seats.

• Strategically place a few electric fans to blow over the crowd.

• Consider renting portable air conditioning units for an outdoor tent, especially if your guests will be dancing there.

• If your reception takes place during evening hours, the heat and lights in the tent could become a magnet for insects. Tent walls, citronella candles, and bug spray can combat this.

In case of wind

• Have hairspray and bobby pins on hand for your hair

• Designate someone to smooth down your dress and veil. You can even sew small weights into the hem of your veil or dress to keep them steady.

• Anchor floral arrangements with landscaping stakes to keep them from toppling over.

In case of cold

• Bring a jacket or shawl just in case. You may not want to wear it during your ceremony or pictures, but it will come in handy the rest of the time. If you customize a leather or jean jacket with the words “Bride” or “Wifey” on the back, it could make for a cute photo op!

• Rent propane patio heaters to keep your guests warm.

• Keep warm beverages on stand by—think coffee, tea, cocoa!

• Provide a basket of blankets for guests to share.

In case of rain

• Choose shoes that won’t sink into the ground or stick rubber/plastic protectors on your heels.

• Purchase clear umbrellas for the bridal party to use during photos and encourage guests to bring umbrellas on your wedding website, just in case.

• If some guests have forgotten their umbrellas, buy inexpensive ones in your wedding colors for guests. Keep the original packaging in case you return after the wedding if they were not needed or used!

• Ask the coordinator at your ceremony/reception venue if they have an indoor backup plan and when they'll make the call to move your event inside.

Questions to ask photographers:

• Have you ever shot at our ceremony location?

• Have you ever shot at our reception location?

• How many cameras will you use?

Picture perfect

When it comes to the most tangible memories of your wedding day, you should not settle for anything less than perfect. The flowers will fade, the music will be played, and the food will be eaten, but the photographs will last forever. Choosing an exceptional wedding photographer is the best way to guarantee you’ll be able to relive your wedding day for years to come.

Like many wedding tasks, picking the right photographer that meets your style, personality, and budget can seem overwhelming.

Important information

Before you set out to find that perfect photographer, you’ll want to have key information ready to discuss—including your wedding date and locations for the ceremony and reception. It’s also a good idea to have a budget in mind while browsing so you don’t get attached to a photographer too far out of your price range.

Photography styles

Take a moment to learn about photography styles, then think about which one best suits your wedding day. Most photographers will have portfolios or online galleries, so browse their images for a style you like.

Meet with prospects

Compile a list of your favorite photographers and interview the most promising candidates. This is the best way to assess their past work, personalities, and what they have to offer. Meet with at least three candidates and plan on visiting their studios, meeting in person, or jumping on a call.

Booking the one

You want to choose someone who doesn’t view your wedding day as another business transaction. Finding a photographer who loves what they do and is passionate about their work and their couples is the key to great wedding memories.

• Is there a fee for multiple locations?

• How many hours will we have you for?

• When will you arrive?

• Do you include engagement photos?

• When can we expect to see a sneak peak of images?

• When can we expect to receive our final images?

• How will our photos be given to us? (USB, website, printed, etc.)

• What is your copyright policy?

• How long do you keep a copy of our photos?

• Do you offer photo albums?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

SHINY PENNY STUDIOS

DO or DON’T?

DO ask to see a real wedding

Because a photographer’s samples represent their best work, it’s never a bad idea to ask to see actual wedding albums and get references from couples who have used their services.

DON’T hire solely based on price

If a photographer’s prices are drastically lower than most, ask yourself why. Typically, it’s due to a lack of experience or lower-quality work. These images will be displayed and shared with generations of family; if you splurge on anything, this should be it!

DO hire someone who specializes in weddings

Some photographers prefer to shoot landscapes, take family portraits, or work solely in a studio. A photographer with experience in weddings will know how to pose the bridal party to create natural, candid-looking shots and how to make the bride feel comfortable and beautiful all day long.

DON’T hire family or friends

Your loved ones should be able to enjoy your day, not work it. You don’t want to look back at your album 10 years from now and regret not having cousin Susie in the photos because she’s the one behind the camera. Plus, a professional will have a written contract to protect your investment and ensure you’re getting exactly what you want.

DO choose someone who you get along well with

Your photographer will be up close and personal with you all day long. Hire someone you feel comfortable around.

DON’T assume you own the rights to your wedding photos

Most photographers include an online album or USB of photos in their packages, but ask your photographer if you’ll have the rights to print, download, and share your photos online after the wedding or if that will be an extra fee.

DO trust your photographer’s expertise

You hired them for a reason! Let them guide you on lighting, timing, and posing to get the best possible shots. Sometimes their suggestions might not make sense in the moment, but the photos will be worth it!

Engagement photos

If your photography package doesn’t include engagement photos and you don’t think they’re worth the extra cost, we’re about to convince you otherwise.

Get to know your photographer

Your photographer is the one vendor you will spend every minute of your wedding day with. They’re going to be right in the midst of intimate moments, closely following and documenting every step you take. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you get along. An engagement shoot allows you to learn how your photographer works, get used to their style and rhythm, and helps you develop a bond before the big day!

Become comfortable in front of the camera

Posing for photos can be awkward. Spending a few hours with your photographer at your engagement shoot will make you more comfortable with posing and smiling for the camera. Plus, both you and your photographer will learn your best angles to ensure you end up with gorgeous wedding photos.

Use the photos for save-the-dates or the guest book

Instead of a generic save-the-date card, send a photo of you and your fiancé holding a chalkboard with your wedding date. You could also create a scrapbook of well-wishes and advice from your guests next to your engagement photos to flip through after your wedding! It’s true that engagement photos aren’t necessary to create either of these, but they add a unique and personal touch.

Have professional photos of you and your fiancé

The majority of the photos you and your fiancé have together are probably selfies. There may be the occasional group shot with friends or on vacation, but this is your chance to have professional, quality photos taken of you! These sessions can capture playful, flirtatious, romantic, intimate, and candid moments shared between you and your fiancé. They show real emotion and are beautiful representations of your relationship.

Make memories with your fiancé

Planning your wedding can be such a hectic and chaotic time that you don’t get to enjoy a quiet moment with your fiancé! Having an engagement session will allow you a moment to enjoy being engaged. You’ll get to have fun being yourselves and creating happy memories together. When you look back, do you want to remember how stressed you were or the laughs and smiles you shared with your fiancé during your engagement shoot?

Boudoir Q +

A

What is a boudoir shoot?

A boudoir shoot is an intimate and personal session where the photographer captures the body in a positive and sensual way.

What do I wear?

This shoot may be outside of your comfort zone. These photos are meant to make you feel beautiful and glamorous in your skin. Wear whatever makes you feel confident and sexy, whether that’s a robe, lingerie, your wedding veil, or even nothing at all. You can get creative by wearing your partner’s favorite sports jersey, leather jacket, work tie, or posing with a prop like a guitar!

What if I’m self-conscious?

The photographer poses you in ways that capture the features you love most and hide the areas you’re not as confident about. They’ll direct you to arch, bend, and twist in a way similar to yoga to add roundness to your booty and chest while making your stomach look toned and your legs look long. Using lighting and shooting from different angles to enhance your beauty, the photographer will ensure that you are showcasing your best self!

What are the details of the shoot?

The shoot can take anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes, not including prep time. Some photographers may have hair and makeup included in their packages, while others will expect you to arrive ready to shoot. Most wedding photography packages don’t include a boudoir shoot, although some photographers may be willing to replace the engagement shoot with this. Ask your photographer about different options and review the details and expectations before signing a contract.

What else should I know?

After having boudoir photos taken, you’ll feel beautiful, empowered, sexy, and confident—all the things you want to feel on your wedding day! They’re designed to make you feel gorgeous, whether you are about to say “I Do,” are celebrating a milestone, or just want to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

These shoots aren’t only for size-2 models. No matter your skin tone, weight, sexuality, or gender, a boudoir shoot will leave you feeling self-assured, fearless, and invincible.

Different catering options

Choosing the right catering service for your special day is crucial, but with so many delicious options available, it can be overwhelming. Whether you’re dreaming of a formal sit-down dinner or a casual spread, caterers offer a variety of selections to suit every taste and style. We’ve also highlighted some common mistakes couples make when booking their caterer, so you can steer clear of any hiccups and enjoy a seamless dining experience.

Plated

This is the most traditional and formal meal option. Be sure to send your invitations out eight to ten weeks in advance, so your guests can choose the meal they’ll eat and share any dietary restrictions.

Buffet

This is probably the most common option as it allows you more freedom with your menu, and your guests can pick and choose what they want. For instance, you can offer five sides instead of three, and your guests can fill their plates with mac and cheese and potatoes while skipping the broccoli and asparagus if they prefer.

Passed appetizers

Passed appetizers are growing in popularity because they are formal and classy, yet not restrictive. Your guests won’t have to sit with the same seven people all night or wait their turn to get served, and they can sample multiple dishes. If you’re only serving appetizers, be sure to let your guests know in advance, and plan for 15-20 pieces per person.

Food stations

You’re never going to offer a menu that every guest likes. Our tastes vary widely! Some guests prefer Italian flavors, while others enjoy Mexican. Some just want a good burger, while others want to indulge on filet mignon. Food stations allow your guests to choose their favorite menu option, so everyone enjoys their meal!

Family-style

Family-style dishes are served to the entire table. For instance, an entire bowl of salad, platter of chicken, and bowl of green beans will be placed on the table for the guests to share. This is an intimate way to dine and encourages your guests to mingle with each other.

Brunch

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you want a more casual celebration, have your ceremony and reception in the morning and serve brunch. You can have both breakfast and lunch options—like sandwiches, omelets, and both savory and sweet crepes—to satisfy any preferences!

Food trucks

Food trucks are perfect for your main meal or a late-night snack. One truck may not be enough to serve all of your guests, and some may not like their meal options. Instead, consider hiring several with a variety of flavors—like Cajun, Mexican, American, and Mediterranean—each offering a limited menu.

Questions to ask caterers:

• How do you charge?

• Have you catered at our venue before?

• What type of meal service do you offer?

• Do you accommodate special dietary options?

• Is clean-up included?

• Can you customize a menu?

• Do you offer complimentary tastings?

• When do you need final menu decisions?

• Do you have any rentals included?

• What is the server-to-guest ratio?

• How long does service typically take?

• Do you make wedding cakes or other desserts?

• Is there a cake-cutting fee?

• Do you offer bartending services?

• How do you handle leftover food?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Catering mistakes

1. Not having a budget in mind

Your caterer should be able to work with you to create a menu that pleases your taste buds and your wallet, no matter your budget.

2. T hinking a buffet is cheaper

With a buffet, caterers often prepare too much food and welcome guests for seconds, which can cost you more money.

3. Not considering the kids

Offer options like mac and cheese, chicken tenders, or pizza to satisfy the children at your wedding (and their parents).

4. Not offering a substantial vegetarian dish

Your RSVP should include a space for guests to indicate any dietary restrictions. Be sure to offer at least one entrée that isn’t meatbased—a salad appetizer isn’t enough!

5. Too much food at the cocktail hour

Serve a limited amount of appetizers to ensure guests don’t ruin their appetites before dinner.

6. Requesting out-of-season dishes

Ordering side dishes or ingredients that are out of season can significantly inflate your budget.

7. Ordering too much dessert

Not every guest will eat cake, but we recommend ordering at least 1.5 servings per guest. If you also offer cookies, cupcakes, candies, or other treats, you can offer less cake.

8. Not planning for leftovers

Ask your caterer who is responsible for any extra food. Take advantage of leftovers by offering them to your family, guests, donating them, or freezing them for later.

CATERING BY THE NUMBERS

Sometimes, leftovers are even better than the meal; but if you leave for your honeymoon right after your reception, you won’t get to enjoy them! Ordering just the right amount of food will ensure you don’t miss out on any leftovers (and that your fridge won’t be stuffed when you return).

Booze clues

From full-service bartenders to trendy mobile bars that bring the party to you, your drink service can set the tone for the entire reception. Whether you’re envisioning signature cocktails, local craft brews, or a classic champagne toast, today’s bar setups are as creative and customizable as the rest of your wedding. As you start planning your menu and service, you might be wondering a few key things. We’ve got the answers to help you raise a glass with confidence.

How long should service be available?

Be sure to arrange for bar service that lasts as long as the reception itself (the average wedding reception lasts between four and six hours). Customarily, the bar will close during dinner service, which will save you money. Alcohol service should end an hour before the end of your reception, but you should make provisions for non-alcoholic beverages to be served until the reception is over.

What are my drink options?

You can choose to have a full bar or simply serve wine and beer as a more cost-effective option. If you want to include liquor but don’t want the cost of a full bar, consider a signature cocktail! If you’re holding a dry wedding, you can have more options than just water, soda, and tea. Try mixing things up with mocktails! Pink lemonade spritzers, dry pomegranate cosmos, and virgin daiquiris are all great options to offer your guests!

How much alcohol do I need?

Remember that only your guests who are 21 or older will be drinking alcohol and that each guest will have about one drink per hour. If you’re having 100 guests over the age of 21, you can assume that 50% of them will drink wine, 20% will drink beer, and 30% will have liquor of some kind. These numbers are flexible, though, and vary depending on your guests’ preferences. Once you have your final guest list, use the calculator on page 86 to find out how much you need!

Questions to ask bartenders:

• How will we be charged?

• Do you offer top-shelf liquor?

• Will extras be refunded?

• If no, can we take home the extras?

• Is there a corkage fee?

• How many bartenders will there be?

• Is there a fee for additional bartenders?

• Do you supply other beverages?

• Is gratuity included in the package? How much?

• Is a champagne toast included?

• Do you close during meal service?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Bar by the numbers

This bar calculator will offer you an idea of how much alcohol you should expect to serve at your reception. Keep in mind that these numbers may change according to your guest list. If your friends and family typically favor beer over wine, you’ll need to adjust the proportions accordingly so you don’t run out of the most popular drink!

We also suggest using the total guest list count to calculate the amounts. Although guests under 21 won’t be drinking, it’s better to have too much than too little—just in case some guests drink more than one drink an hour.

Step One

A pop of personality

There’s a common misconception that the groom’s attire doesn’t have personality: a black tuxedo or a basic suit with a tie that matches the bridesmaids’ dresses—that’s it. Well, we’re here to disrupt that notion. We object! Brides are kicking it into high gear to make sure that their look includes as many personal touches as possible. Grooms can do the same!

Your wedding day attire should reflect your personal style. Even if you don’t typically put a lot of thought into what you’re wearing, consider your favorite outfits. Is there a color you love to wear? Do you have a collection of graphic socks? Is there a special flower you get for your fiancé on special occasions? Incorporate personal touches like these into your ensemble!

Wear cuff links that have a quote from your favorite movie or a tie clip your father or grandpa passed down to you. Sport a bow-tie to show off your playful personality or black-and-white oxfords to make a dapper fashion statement. Whether you opt for formal or casual, adding a touch of your personality will ensure you’re comfortable and confident and your wedding day.

Questions to ask about men’s formalwear:

• Do you carry tuxedos and/or suits?

• Do you rent or sell?

• What color and style options do you offer?

• Can we mix and match styles for the wedding party?

• Can we coordinate colors to match the bridesmaids’ dresses?

• What customization options do I have?

• Do you sell accessories? (ties, suspenders, cufflinks, watches, etc.)

• What is your return or exchange policy after the event?

• When should we schedule our pick-up?

• How do out-of-town groomsmen get fitted?

• How many fittings will I have?

• Do you offer group packages or wedding party specials?

• Do you offer rentals for fathers or ring bearers as well?

• Do you have in-house alterations?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Getting the perfect fit

Your tailor knows the ins and outs of getting the perfect fit. But nobody’s perfect! If you want to go into your fitting with a second set of sharp eyes, here are some basic fit guidelines to keep in mind.

• Match the width of your tie to the width of your lapel.

• Your tie should end just above your waistband.

• The shoulder pads should be designed to end at the shoulders.

• There should not be a gap between your shirt and jacket collar.

• When you slip your hand between your shirt and buttoned jacket, it should fit snugly but not be tight.

• The hem of your jacket should cover your zipper and your butt.

• If you have a double-button jacket, the top button should fall at or just above your belly button.

• The bottom button of a double-button jacket shouldn’t be clasped.

• Always unbutton your jacket before sitting down.

• If you’re wearing a vest, leave the bottom button undone.

• Your shirt cuffs should extend past your jacket sleeves by about half an inch.

• Your socks should be long enough to cover your ankles and legs when you sit down.

Beautiful boutonniere

The boutonniere is one of the few opportunities to add some color and texture to the formal look. Worn on the left lapel above the heart, the boutonniere is traditionally a reflection of the bride’s bouquet, symbolizing their connection and relationship to one another.

Unique personalizations and textures

Contemporary wedding trends have seen a shift in boutonnieres, with couples increasingly embracing personalization and unique botanical choices. Traditional single flowers remain popular, but many couples are opting for unconventional options like succulents, wildflowers, berries, or herbs for a fresh touch.

Additionally, boutonnieres are becoming more intricate, featuring a mix of textures, fabrics, foliage, and tiny accents that match the wedding theme or color scheme. Boutonnieres reflect individual style and creativity, adding a personalized and memorable touch to the wedding day.

Floral trends taking over

Flower pocket squares, lapels, and bow ties have emerged as a stylish and distinctive trend! These accessories offer a fresh and charming alternative (or addition!) to traditional boutonnieres. Couples are increasingly opting for intricate floral designs that are carefully tucked into jacket pockets or affixed to their lapels. These floral accents not only complement the overall theme and color palette of the wedding but also add a unique and elegant touch to the formal attire.

The morning of your wedding is about more than just preparation. It’s the calm before the celebration, filled with laughter, excitement, anticipation, and joy. Surrounded by your closest friends, family, and beauty pros, your getting-ready space becomes the heart of the morning and sets the tone for the day. Along with the prep below, be sure to get a good night’s sleep the night before so you are well rested!

Prep

Before the morning of your wedding, you’ve already had your hair and makeup trials. Before your artists arrive, review the photos from your trials and be sure to share any feedback you have on those styles. You want to make sure your look is exactly how you want it! You’ll also want to remind anyone else receiving services how the stylists have asked to have hair and skin prepped, or what they can and cannot do.

Lighting

The morning of your wedding, the right lighting can make a world of difference. It sets the mood, enhances the ambiance, and ensures that every moment is beautifully captured in photos and cherished memories. Well-lit spaces create a sense of elegance, ease, and joy, allowing you to look and feel your best as you prepare for your special day, basking in the radiant glow of love.

Food

Planning the right food for your wedding morning is crucial. A tasty and nutritious breakfast not only keeps you fueled for the big day but also helps you look and feel your best. Your next meal may not be until dinner, and the last thing you want is a hangry moment on your special day! Collaborate with your makeup artist to coordinate the optimal mealtime based on your morning schedule. And don’t forget to feed everyone, from the bridal suite, groom’s quarters, and the parents-of.

Gifts

If you’re thinking of exchanging gifts with your fiancé, parents, or bridesmaids, it’s wise to do so before your makeup is complete. You’ll most likely shed tears, and you don’t want to risk smudging your makeup, especially when your glam squad has already wrapped up. Once your beauty schedule is set, make sure to plan a time for the gift exchange!

Questions to ask about beauty + health:

• Do you provide on-site services or do you have a salon?

• Is there a travel fee?

• What size party can you accommodate?

• How long will it take to do my hair and/or makeup?

• How long will it take to do bridesmaids hair and/or makeup?

• How much does a trial cost?

• What is included in a trial and when are those scheduled?

• Do you cover tattoos?

• Will you be my stylist on the day-of?

• Do you have a team or do I need to hire another artist?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Choose your beauty

Tanning

Tanning beds offer a natural color, but they can cause irreversible damage to your skin. You can adjust your tone based on the length of time and level of the bed, but they require pre-planning and a time commitment before the wedding.

Spray tans provide instant results that don’t damage your skin. The only cons are that they don’t last more than a few days, and you have to test it out at several appointments to find the right shade.

Foundation

Airbrush foundation creates a smooth, flawless complexion. It provides the perfect base for the rest of your makeup and stays put all night long. However, you have to hire a professional for proper application.

Using your own liquid foundation will ensure that you know exactly how your skin will react to the makeup. You can touch it up throughout the night, but remember that it may not be as long-lasting or as photogenic as airbrush.

Lashes

False lashes are easy to apply and remove, with various options for added length, volume, and drama. However, they aren’t long-lasting. After a full day of emotions, your lashes may be barely hanging on.

Lash extensions can last up to two months, with each lash handglued for a natural look. Make sure you try them before your wedding, as some people may react negatively to the glue.

Nails

Acrylic/gel nails are perfect if you want to add some length, but they wreak havoc on your nail beds. The length can last for months, but you’ll need a fill every few weeks, or else they’ll start falling off. Natural nails are the healthiest and most cost-effective option. However, they are more susceptible to breaking than acrylic nails, and growing long nails isn’t an option for everybody.

• Develop an exercise plan.

• Practice yoga or meditation to clear your mind.

Spread the word

Invitations have become more than just a way to share the “who, what, when, and where” of your wedding. They are the first glimpse your guests will have of your special day, setting the tone and giving a sneak peek into the celebration to come.

From save-the-dates, invitations, menus, programs, and thank-you cards, there are many stationery elements to consider that add a personal touch and create a cohesive experience for your guests. Now is the time to make sure you have your guest list finalized and know who you want to celebrate your special day with.

Use these tips and the timeline to the right to know

exactly how and when to tackle your invitations. Invitation tips:

• Send physical invitations. E-vites may seem nice for your budget, but can easily be deleted.

• Write out scripted numerals for the year and time of the wedding, but not for street addresses.

• Put numbers in the corner of RSVP cards that correspond to a numbered list. This makes it easy to track who’s responded and who hasn’t.

• No need to include registry information on the invitation. This should be included on bridal shower invites or on your wedding website only.

Tips on addressing invitations

Here’s the solution

You, your fiancé, and both sets of parents should sit down to start compiling a guest list about twelve months before your wedding date and finalize it around nine to six months out. Creating a guest list is the number one thing couples and families tend to disagree about when planning their wedding. If you and your fiancé start to argue, check out these questions and answers for a solution.

Who should get a plus-one?

When it comes to navigating the difficult “plus-one” situation, remember that a plus-one is a must for anyone who is married, engaged, or in a long-term relationship. It’s also considerate to extend a plus-one to a single friend who doesn’t have any other friends invited.

What if someone doesn’t RSVP by the date on the invite?

One of the most frustrating things you may encounter during planning is when someone doesn’t RSVP. Whoever’s list the person falls on— whether it’s your parents’, yours, your fiancé’s, or your fiancé’s parents’—should be the party responsible for calling them. Texting can be a faux pas, but it depends on your relationship with that person. If it’s a friend, you can probably text, but for family, coworkers, or family friends, they should be asked in-person or via phone call.

How do we state that kids are not invited to the wedding?

When it comes to inviting children, you should never put “No Children” or “Adult Reception Only” on a wedding invitation. Instead, pre-write the invited guests’ names on their RSVP card so they’ll know exactly who is invited. Or, put a line beneath their name on the RSVP card with _____/2, so they know that two people are invited and can fill in how many will be attending.

What can we do if our guest list starts to get too long?

It’s helpful to have an “A-List” and “B-List” (although you should never inform your guests of their status!). Send your first round of save-thedates to your “A-List” only. If guests let you know they can’t make it, you can extend invitations to “B-List” guests.

Like most aspects of planning your wedding, there are traditions and guidelines to adhere to when addressing your envelopes.

• Use full names only, like Miss Abigail Johnson, not Miss Abby Johnson or simply, Miss Johnson.

• Abbreviating Mister and Misses to Mr. and Mrs. is acceptable.

• Do not abbreviate professional titles like Doctor or Reverend.

• North, South, East, and West are written in full if they precede the street name.

• A comma is added after the street name, and abbreviations for North, South, East, and West are used if they come after.

• Spell out all words in the address. Street, Avenue, Road, Apartment, and State names should be written in full.

• Write out house numbers under 20. For example, One East Market Street rather than 1 East Market Street.

• Address couples with different last names on the same line.

• Use “and Guest” only if you don’t know the guest’s name.

• Double-check spelling and addresses before mailing. Even small typos can make a big impression!

Other stationery

There is so much stationery to explore besides the obvious: invitations. From save-the-dates to pew cards to menus to thankyous, here’s our breakdown of the whats and whens of wedding stationery to get your guests to and through your celebration.

Before the wedding

Engagement party invites, savethe-dates, and bridal shower invites. For engagement parties, invites should be sent eight to six weeks in advance and include the when and where. Save-thedates should be sent nine to six months in advance and mention the location of your wedding, link to your wedding website, and mention that a formal invitation will follow. Bridal shower invites typically come two to three months in advance and should include the when and where, theme, and your registry.

At the ceremony

You might want programs, pew cards, and signage. A program includes the who, what, when, and where of your ceremony, as well as a brief welcome and an overview of the proceedings. Pew cards or seating cards designate where a guest should sit and can be included with the invitation or given at the ceremony. Signage you might opt for includes a welcome sign or a request that guests keep their phones away and leave the photography to the photographer.

At the reception

You’ll need escort cards, place cards, table numbers, menus, and more! Escort cards help direct guests to their assigned tables—and many couples nowadays are opting for a decorative display with everyone’s names and tables rather than individual cards. Place cards designate a guest’s seat along with their table. Other signage you might want to include could designate where the favors are, list the signature cocktail, or remind guests to use the couple’s hashtag in their photos.

Don’t forget thank-yous!

Engagement party, bridal shower, wedding—if your guests show up for you, say thanks! Thank you cards for the pre-wedding events should be sent out within four weeks, where as your wedding thank yous should be sent out between three and six months after your celebration. Personalize each thank you by name, and include whatever gift a guest may have brought. It might feel time consuming, but it’s important to thank those who were there to support and love you!

It’s a sign

The importance of signs

Your guests most likely have never been to your venue before. They’ll probably feel uncomfortable and nervous, having no idea where to go, what to expect, or where to sit. Properly placed signs put your guests’ worries to rest, allowing them to fully enjoy the wedding.

D-I-why?

Working with a professional lowers your stress levels and saves you money! While sign specialists can create custom signs for your wedding, they also have a collection of rentals—like “Sign our Guestbook,” “Gifts,” and table numbers—offered at a much lower rate! Plus, they know all the signs you will need that you may have forgotten about, like reserved seating at the ceremony or directions to the restrooms.

Our favorite trends

Besides giving direction and guidance, signs should reflect the style and theme of the wedding. Embellished gold frames, antique and ornate mirrors, reclaimed wood, and acrylic are all popular materials to use for your signs. Slate, three-dimensional cutouts and etched metal are on the rise, replacing chalkboard signs for a more industrial look that can work in many settings!

Opting for a custom sign that can hang in your home forever is also a popular trend this wedding season. Consider getting the lyrics from your first dance, a quote from your favorite movie or book, a scripture passage, or an excerpt from your vows printed on canvas. Or showcase maps or dates of your first date, proposal, and wedding day!

BE OUR GUEST QUIZ

One of the more stressful parts of a wedding can be deciding on the guest list. We know you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but you also don’t have an unlimited budget. Here is a quick and easy quiz to help you decide who gets an invite and who will have to see your stunning dress on social media.

1. How do you know them?

A. I don’t. My mom knows them.

B. They’re a friend.C. They’re a colleague.

2. When was the last time you spoke with them?

A. Last week or sooner.

B. Within the last few months.

3. Have they met your fiancé?

A. Yes, a bunch of times!

C. Hmm... good question.

B. Not yet. C. I think once or twice.

4. Were you invited to their wedding?

A. I was not invited. B. I was in the wedding party. C. I was invited.

5. Would you invite them over for dinner?

A. If I were forced. B. Absolutely! C. Yes, but I would make something quick to eat.

6. D o you talk about your wedding in front of this person?

A. They’ve heard every single detail.

B. I’m sure my mom has.

C. They’ve heard me talking about it in the office.

7. Will you still talk to this person in five years?

A. Yes, most likely. B. Absolutely not.C. I don’t really know.

10-14 Points: Yes!

Of course, this person should be invited! Why are you even taking this quiz? You clearly care about them and want them to be a part of your special day. Stop questioning it and send that save-the-date already!

7-9 Points: Add them to B-List

Send out your first round of save-the-dates to your “A-List.” If people start to inform you they can’t make it, send out the “B-List” invitations. This way, you can make sure everyone you really want to celebrate your wedding day with has top priority.

0-6 Points: No.

Skip the invite and just let them enjoy the pictures when you blow up social media with them. You obviously aren’t very close with them, so they shouldn’t be offended or surprised that they didn’t get invited. They might actually be a bit relieved.

It’s all in the

entertainment details

A wedding is a celebration of love, and it’s also an opportunity to create unforgettable memories for both the couple and their guests. Weddings often incorporate a wide array of entertainment options to keep the festivities going long into the night. From music and dancing to interactive experiences, there’s no shortage of ways to make your special day even more memorable. The entertainment choices for your wedding are as diverse as your love story. Consider your budget, the size of your guest list, and your personal preferences when selecting options. Whatever you choose should reflect your personalities and create an unforgettable experience for all in attendance. With the right entertainment, your wedding will be an occasion that your guests will remember fondly for years to come.

Contract points

• Ask about and confirm deposit requirements, payment plans, and final deadlines.

• Make sure a cancellation/ refund policy is included. If something happens to a musician who’s not under contract, you could end up without wedding music.

• Find out about any hidden fees or extra costs they may have.

Timing

• Confirm arrival times. You should expect them to arrive an hour in advance and plan on contracting them for at least four hours.

• Ask about breaks and “continuous flow.” As your reception will most likely last around four hours, odds are that your performer will have to take a break at some point.

Equipment

• Figure out what the equipment requirements are, such as power outlets, space needed, speakers, and any thing that you may be expected to supply.

• Ask your venue whether the facility has any restrictions on the number of musicians and pieces of equipment you may bring. You should also ask about electrical power supply and noise limitations.

Introductions

• Inform your DJ or band leader how to properly pronounce the names of your bridal party and their relationship to the newlyweds (maid of honor, parents of the bride, etc.).

Attire guidelines

• Let your performers know the dress code.

Reception enhancements

Add that “WOW” factor to your reception by considering one of these reception enhancements. These special effects and activities will entertain your guests and leave an impression that they’ll talk about for years to come.

Lighting

Wedding lighting is not just about illuminating a room. The lighting design you choose will help shape and set the tone of your event.

Cold flame sparklers

Enhance your grand entrance or bring your first dance to life with these incredible (and safe!) spark-free fountains.

Drapery

Behind the head table, falling from the ceiling, or hiding the not-so-pretty kitchen area, linens and drapes can add texture to your walls.

Monograms

Whether down on the dance floor or projected on the wall with a gobo, include your initials in your reception for a personalized look.

Dancing on the clouds

On your wedding day, you’ll be on cloud nine. So, why not dance on them too? This enhancement creates a romantic, dreamy feel on the dance floor.

Special entertainment

Imagine the element of surprise when you bring out a live musician, dancer, or mascot during dinner or dancing.

Live painting

A live painter not only gives you a memorable wedding keepsake, but it’s a unique experience to have your guests watch or be included in.

Caricature

Provide your guests with an interactive take home favor to remember your wedding day.

Photo ops

Set up a space to snap a photo with a boxwood wall and neon sign. This will serve as decor for your reception, and don’t forget to share your wedding hashtag to see all the pictures the next day.

Yard games

Providing yard games like giant Jenga® or Connect Four® will offer guests who either don’t dance or want a dance break some entertainment relief.

Questions to ask about entertainment:

• Who will be performing?

• Have you performed at our venue before?

• Will there be an assistant to help?

• How much space will you need?

• How many hours will you be performing?

• Do you require breaks?

• Will you have music playing during breaks?

• Do you emcee the reception?

• Will you help structure the timeline?

• Do you provide a microphone for toasts?

• Will you take requests at the reception?

• What type of reception enhancements do you offer?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

ALEXIS MAST BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY

Hire a DJ or band?

In our opinion, you can’t go wrong either way. The decision to hire a DJ or live band is completely up to you, each offering a completely different atmosphere for your reception. Though they’re both very different, you’re sure to make memories out on the dance floor either way. Here’s our thoughts.

Versatility

If this is a priority, disc jockeys can’t be beaten. Their repertoire can include practically every song ever recorded, and if they don’t currently have access to your favorite tune, a well-connected DJ will be able to get it.

It’s important to note that DJs do more than just shuffle songs— they also emcee the event and ensure everything runs smoothly. If your guests don’t seem to be dancing or enjoying themselves, the DJ can easily and smoothly transition to a new song that gets your crowd excited. Because they can walk away from the music while it’s playing, they’re also free to interact with the crowd and make sure your guests are having a good time.

Energy + Interactive

However, the energy a live band can provide to your reception is contagious. Like having a private concert just for you, your closest friends, and family, your guests will witness something truly special and one-of-a-kind at your reception, as no live performance can ever be repeated.

Best of both worlds

But, why limit yourself to one or the other when you can have both? A lot of entertainment companies offer both services, so you don’t have to worry about working with two different companies or paying for two deposits.

Start with the band...

to play during cocktail hour and dinner. Live bands bring an entirely different energy to every performance. As soon as your guests walk in, they’ll be excited and eager to start the party. This is the perfect time to include songs you love that may not be dance-worthy or to have a fun karaoke option! Extend their performance into the beginning of the reception by having them sing for your first dance and parent dances. Because the song is being sung just for you, it is a truly one-of-a-kind moment, unlike any other wedding that has used that song.

End with the DJ...

to open up the dance floor. He or she will be able to play all the current chart-toppers, older classics, and hits everyone loves. They can easily transition from one song to another based on how the crowd is feeling. And because they’re not singing, they can interact with the crowd without pausing the music. DJs are perfect for requesting songs because their library is virtually limitless! Odds are, they have whatever song your guests want to hear.

DJs and live bands are so different and provide a completely different atmosphere for your reception. How can you choose between them? Talk to your entertainment company about options for incorporating both into your wedding.

PHOTO BOOTH

Questions to ask about photo booths:

• How many hours will it be available?

• Will it close during dinner service?

• How much space do you need?

• Will your staff work the wedding?

• Do guests get copies of the photos?

• Will we get copies of the photos? In what format?

• Can the photos be posted to social media?

• Is there a limit to the number of photos?

• Will the photos be posted on your website? When?

• Can we customize the design on the photos?

• Do you provide props?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Strike a pose

Photo booths serve as the perfect guest book or party favor, and your guests will have so much fun posing. From props to backdrops and new technologies, we’ve laid out all the details you need to know before booking a photo booth.

Size + space

Small kiosks allow for privacy. Guests can make funny faces and strike silly poses without worrying about an audience watching them. The downside to the classic booth is that there’s a limit on how many people can fit into one shot. With an open-air photo booth, guests can pose in small or large groups. They have more freedom to pose, but they may feel self-conscious with others watching.

Backdrops + props

If you’ve decided to have an open-air photo booth, you can

have a custom-made backdrop or a green screen. And don’t forget about props! Perfect for all photo booths, props add an element of playfulness and personalization to your photos.

New technology

Other options that may be available are video or mirror photo booths. Video booths are a great way for guests to leave you a message or advice. Mirror photo booths take the iconic “mirror selfie” to the next level. Guests can see what their photo will look like before it’s taken, which generally makes for better photos.

Photo albums + social media sharing

Both you and your guests will want to share these fun photos on social media. Luckily, this option is included in many packages or can be added with most photo booth companies! Albums are a common way to collect and view all of the photos taken in the booth. Before booking your photo booth, ask your rental company if they provide these options. If they do provide a memory album, be sure that two sets of photos can be printed: one for your album and one for the guest.

Should you hire a travel agent?

Your honeymoon is your time to relax, unwind, and bask in the glow of your new marriage. But the burden of planning can often make it feel like just another item on the list of tasks stressing you out. That’s where travel agents come in!

When it comes to travel agents, many people don’t realize that they don’t charge for their services. Since they work directly with the resorts, they can get you the best deals, discounts, and packages at no extra cost to you! Plus, they have experience traveling to many destinations and know the ins and outs of different areas and their customs. Because of this, they can recommend hidden gems and fun excursions you might not find on your own, as well as advise you on dialects, customs, travel restrictions, visas, and more.

Questions to ask travel agents:

• Do you charge a booking fee?

• What kind of special deals can you offer?

• Can you provide customized trips?

• Do you specialize in one area of travel/location?

• What services can you book? (flights, hotels, transportation, activities, dinner reservations, etc.)

• How far in advance should we book?

If you’ve ever made travel arrangements before, you know that it can be stressful and overwhelming—especially if you’ve never visited the destination. Between your job and the stresses of planning the perfect wedding, you don’t have time to research resorts, book transportation, and schedule excursions. Handing all of that responsibility over to a travel agent will free you up to focus on other wedding details. They’ll organize all of the confirmations, arrangements, activities, and details so that all you have to do is relax and enjoy your honeymoon.

• Do you recommend one property over another?

• Are you available for questions during our trip?

• Do you have a honeymoon registry?

• Do you provide travel insurance?

• Do you provide currency exchange?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Honeymoon budget tips

You’re spending a lot of money on your wedding, creating the celebration of a lifetime. We have a few tips that will help keep your expenses low for your trip so you can relax and make new memories while not breaking the bank.

Travel in the off season

If you get married in the summer, some locations—like ski resorts—may offer lower rates as their tourist season slows. If you’re hosting a winter wedding, now is the perfect time to get a little sunshine by hitting a beach.

All inclusive resorts

Though the initial cost of staying at an all-inclusive resort may seem intimidating, they cover all of your meals, drinks, and sometimes even excursions. Everything will be covered beforehand and you won’t have to worry about how much you’re spending on essentials while you’re there.

Travel reward credit cards

Getting credit cards that earn you points at hotels, airline miles, or even cash back to use on your wedding expenses can heavily impact your honeymoon budget!

Honeymoon registry

A honeymoon registry allows your guests to buy you an excursion, fancy dinner, room enhancement (like decorations or chilled champagne), or simply contribute to the expense!

Consider local spots

Taking a boat tour off Lake Erie, exploring the riverfront of Cincinnati, or staying at a bedand-breakfast in Amish country. These options balance your need to get away while not incurring a ton of travel expenses. Ohio is filled with romantic and thrill-seeking spots. Make several “day-cation” itineraries to explore nearby destinations or get away for a weeklong, intimate stay in an area you’ve never visited before!

Questions to ask videographers:

• Have you ever shot at our ceremony location?

• Have you ever shot at our reception location?

• How many cameras will you use?

• Will you be the videographer on the day of?

• Will there be an assistant on hand to help?

• Will there be an additional videographer?

• How and when will we receive our video?

• How long will our video be?

• Will you interview our guests?

• Do you offer a highlight reel?

• Can we share our video on social media?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Why you need a videographer

Your wedding day goes by in a blur of laughter, tears, and joy, and before you know it, the night is over. Between greeting guests, dancing, and soaking in the moment, it’s impossible to catch every detail. A professional videographer preserves those fleeting moments—the look in your partner’s eyes as you walk down the aisle, your parents’ reactions during the vows, and the laughter shared during toasts—so you can relive them for years to come. A wedding video lets you feel the day all over again, not just remember it.

Relive the moment in real time

Wedding days are fast paced, and you’ll be so nervous at first that you may not remember all the details! Videography allows you to relive each beautiful moment of your wedding day in a crystal-clear way. Photos can’t capture everything!

It offers a different perspective

You only enjoyed your wedding from your point of view, but with a videographer, you can relive it through dozens of different perspectives! Seeing these emotional moments through the eyes of your loved ones and guests will bring new meaning to your wedding each time you watch your video.

Share your day over and over

Having a short video of your wedding allows you to share it with family or friends who couldn’t make it. You’ll also be able to watch your special day on your first, 10th, or 50th anniversary—with your family now and with future generations.

Some memories deserve to be heard

Photos capture beautiful moments, but video lets you relive the emotions, the vows, the laughter, and even those spontaneous moments you might have missed. There’s nothing like hearing the voices, seeing the movement, & being able to revisit your wedding day again and again. Trust us, you’ll be glad you have the videos!

10 CAN'T MISS SHOTS

1. Your bridesmaids and family members helping you get ready

2. Your fiancé's expression when they see you walk down the aisle

3. The movement of your dress

4. A few tears shed during your vows

5. Your joyous first kiss as newlyweds

6. The parents dances

7. Your guests catching the bouquet and garter

8. Your grandparents dancing to their favorite song

9. Guests’ interviews, perfect for capturing your loved ones’ voices and mannerisms

10. A pan over of your guests celebrating your love

DO or DON’T?

DO capture the moments you may have missed

While you’re getting photos taken, your niece may break out in song and dance at the cocktail hour. In a few years’ time, you may wish you could hear your dad’s speech again. A videographer will capture the moments you miss as well as the ones you wish you could live over again and again!

DON’T assume you’ll never watch it

Five-minute highlight reels are super popular today and can easily be watched whenever and wherever! Relive your wedding day on your anniversary or even just a date night. They’re sentimental and emotional and will allow you to remember family members or friends you may not have with you forever.

DO make a list of shots you want

While an experienced videographer has a go-to list of emotional moments and angles that work, there may be something that you want that they don’t usually capture—like a performance by your bridesmaids or your pet walking down the aisle.

DON’T assume it costs too much

A videographer will work with your budget to deliver a product you’re happy with. Although you might not be able to have two shooters, drone footage, and cinematic editing for a few hundred dollars, we recommend asking a videographer you love what you can get within your price range or if there are a la carte options.

DO research different video styles

From storytelling to short form, full edits to highlight reels, there are a lot of options when it comes to video! Do some research and find the style you like best before reaching out to videographers.

DON’T think they will be a distraction

If you’re imagining big cameras, fuzzy microphones, and lots of wires, you’ll be happily surprised by how discreet wedding videographers can be. With modern handheld cameras and discreet angles, you won’t even notice they’re there!

DO meet with them before to discuss expectations

You should never hire—or pay!—a vendor without meeting them first, especially if that vendor will be with you all day long. Your videographer will be following you down the aisle and may get up close and personal during the cake cutting. It’s important that you like their personality and feel comfortable enough to ask questions or make requests.

DO hire a wedding videographer

All in all, hire a wedding videographer. You spent so many months planning the perfect event, and in the blink of an eye, it will all be over! You’ll be able to watch the video years from now to see your loved ones, listen to your vows and toasts, and share the day with friends and family who couldn’t make it, as well as those who will become part of your life after your wedding. There are a million little moments that you’ll wish you could do or see again, and a wedding video allows you to do just that.

Perfect petals

From the bouquet to the boutonniere, centerpieces to aisle décor, flowers play a significant role in creating a beautiful event. They help set a casual or elegant atmosphere with their vibrancy, fragrance, and design, all while reflecting your and your fiancé’s personality and style.

Finding the right florist

Creating wedding arrangements is a labor-intensive and time consuming project, so find a florist who specifically works in weddings. While researching potential florists, pay attention to their portfolios—after all, you’ll want to work with someone whose talents match the style you have in mind for your wedding.

Preparing for your floral meeting

Before meeting with potential florists, have some ideas in mind regarding types of arrangements and, more specifically, which flowers you would like to see on your wedding day. Research which flowers correspond with your color scheme and whether they’ll be in season at the time of your wedding. Keep in mind, just because a flower isn’t in season doesn’t mean you can’t have it in your bouquet—it just may cost a little extra. Attending a wedding show is an excellent way to see (and smell) a variety of arrangements up close!

Meeting and interviewing florists

After gathering ideas, set up an introductory meeting with a few different florists to see samples of their work and photographs of weddings they’ve done in the past. This is a time when you’ll definitely want to bring your Today’s Bride magazine to help guide your conversation, make sure you ask all the right questions, and get all the information you’ll need to make an informed decision. It’s also helpful to bring along pictures from books, magazines, or Pinterest boards that illustrate your ideas. Additionally, give your florist photos of your gown and your bridesmaids’ gowns, swatches of your color scheme, and pictures of your decor.

Questions to ask florists:

• When do we need to order flowers?

• What floral décor options do you offer? (vases, candles, and/or arches)

• Do you work with fresh flowers or silk flowers?

• What kind of flowers do you recommend?

• Do you charge for delivery?

• Who will set up on the day of our wedding?

• Will you stay at the arrange and distribute the flowers?

• Will you transport flowers between the venue spaces?

• When do décor items need to be returned?

• What is your policy for lost or damaged items?

• Do you offer floral preservation?

• When should I preserve my bouquet?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Centerpieces

The most commonly used centerpieces contain flowers, candles, or a combination of both. The arrangement you choose plays a big part in setting the atmosphere for the evening, and the rest of the décor should complement that design. Your centerpiece doesn’t have to stand alone! Incorporate vases, pedestals, or accent pieces into the display that reflect your theme, whether it’s rustic, vintage, or modern.

Budget

Before meeting with a florist or rental company, consider your budget. Some of the pictures you’ve pinned or printed of gorgeous, jaw-dropping displays may cost more than you’re expecting to pay. Use these photos as inspiration to design your own arrangements, not as an exact replica. Discuss your ideas, vision, and budget, and then come up with a realistic display that balances all three!

Height

Another aspect to consider when choosing your centerpieces is height. To encourage mingling, your guests should be able to see each other from across the table. Try to avoid choosing a vase or pedestal that raises the arrangement directly into your guests’ line of sight. Choosing a tall arrangement will allow your guests to speak freely and easily pass the salt or butter. But while they look stunning from a panoramic or distant view, your guests won’t have an appealing view of them from below. To compromise, include candles around the base of the vase or choose a colored or textured linen.

Table numbers

If you have any sort of seating arrangement, your tables should be numbered so your guests know where to sit. Blending this table number into your centerpieces without upsetting the integrity of the design is very important. You can stick a custom-made scripted number into a flower arrangement, wrap a tag around the vase, try a wooden or concrete block with a bold number, or adorn wine bottles with custom labels! One adorable and sentimental trend is to frame photos of you and your fiancé at an age that corresponds with the table number (six years old for table six, for example).

DIY

A wonderful way to DIY your centerpieces is to create a display using various vases or candle holders. Wine bottles have become extremely popular and are perfect for a vineyard wedding! Combine varying colors and heights and stick a few flower stems into each one. The contrasting heights of a display like this will add intrigue and interest, which draws more attention!

What to do with flowers after the wedding

You may have rented your décor, linens, chairs, and tables, and we know that all the delicious leftover cake and food aren’t a burden. But what are you supposed to do with your flowers? It’s not like the flower shop will take them back. Here are some ways you can extend the joy of your wedding day for yourself and others!

Donate them to a senior living or hospital

Flowers are still good a week or two after your wedding. Brighten someone’s day by calling up local senior living homes or hospitals to see if they accept fresh flower donations.

Use them as gifts

Pass your bouquet down to your flower girl and gift centerpieces to those who played a huge part in making your day flawless. You can even ask vendors (like your DJ, photographer, caterer) or the security if they want to take any home!

Visit a loved one’s grave

If you have a family member or friend you’ve lost, placing your bouquet on their grave is a beautiful way to remember them and feel their presence on your wedding day. If you do this between the ceremony and reception, ask your photographer to come along and capture photos of this sentimental and emotional exchange. Or, for a more private and intimate moment, stop by after leaving the reception with only your new spouse or family members.

Preserve them

Create a keepsake like a shadow box, domed frame, rosary, ornament, or even jewelry. Every time you see them, you’ll think about all the special moments you had that day. If you get jewelry or a rosary, it’s the perfect heirloom to pass down to future generations! You can also preserve your wedding bouquet in resin. This incredible preserving technique creates a durable, unique, and even practical piece of art that will allow you to cherish your wedding bouquet for years to come.

Time to let love Bloom

With the different varieties and colors available, choosing just one bouquet to fit your style and theme can feel impossible. Picking the right florist will ensure that your flowers are consistent, in season, and exactly how you imagined. Whatever you choose, we’re rooting for you!

Wrapping your stems

After you’ve met with your florist and decided on the flowers you want, you may think your job is done. While the bouquet wrap isn’t as visible to your guests, it often gets forgotten or overlooked, but it’s one more detail that needs your attention.

Simplistic

If you don’t specify the type of bouquet wrap you want, your florist will likely just use a neutral ribbon and keep it very simple. However, one of the trends today is to use a statement ribbon—like copper or velvet. Your florist will then leave the ribbon long, letting it flow past the stems to add another dimension to your bouquet.

Sentimental

If you want to use something sentimental—like lace from your mother’s dress or your grandfather’s tie, (what a beautiful way to incorporate something borrowed or old!)—let your florist know in advance so they can prepare for that. You’ll also need to drop off this fabric in advance so they can experiment with different tying options and bouquet shapes.

Chinoiserie whimsy

The word Chinoiserie (pronounced sheen-wah-zuh-ree) refers to a European design style inspired by the art and decorative motifs of East Asia. It’s known for intricate patterns, delicate florals, and the iconic blue-and-white porcelain that has graced homes and tables for centuries. This timeless aesthetic has made its way into weddings offering a sophisticated look that’s both worldly and romantic.

For this styled shoot, Wayne County wedding vendors re-imagined the Chinoiserie trend through a modern lens, pairing porcelain-inspired details with lush florals and airy tented elegance. The result? A scene that feels regal yet fresh, rooted in heritage but ready for today’s couple.

The palette

A combination of cobalt, periwinkle, and ivory, brought together by greenery and warm gold accents. The combination of cool blues with creamy whites feels effortlessly refined, perfect for couples who love a classic look with personality and depth.

The florals

Hydrangeas, garden roses, and cascading delphinium create a floral fantasy. Hanging installations add height and drama, while blue-and-white jars anchor the table arrangements.

The tablescape

Each table features texture and pattern with porcelain vases, gold-rimmed glassware, and crisp white linens. Natural wood tones warm the palette, creating a look that feels sophisticated yet inviting. Elegant place settings and hand-tied napkins complete the romantic look.

The setting

Nestled beneath a white sailcloth tent, this shoot feels like a garden dream come to life. The blend of open air, soft light, and tailored design showcases how outdoor weddings can be both luxurious and timeless.

Get the look

Pair blue-and-white ceramics with neutral linens, incorporate lush florals in layered heights, and don’t be afraid of bold pattern play. Add touches of gold for warmth, and keep the overall aesthetic airy, elegant, and thoughtfully composed. Better yet, visit the local wedding pros who designed this shoot to get the exact look. DÉCOR & RENTALS

Questions to ask about décor + rentals:

• Have you worked at our venue before?

• Do you handle set up and teardown?

• How much time do you require for set up?

• Do you have a showroom with all your products?

• Do you offer mock-up previews of rentals before our wedding?

• What is your policy on damaged or missing rentals after the wedding?

• Do rental items need to be cleaned before being returned?

• Can we see photos of your work at past weddings?

• Do you regularly add new products to your inventory?

• Do you have any unique rental items?

• Will you assist with a room flip if needed?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Should we rent or buy?

When it comes to wedding décor, many couples consider buying their items so they can resell them afterward. But keep in mind, you’ll need to clean, transport, and store everything, then wait until next wedding season to find a buyer. Trying to resell your décor often ends up being more frustrating and time consuming than you expect.

Ease of renting

Renting your décor takes the stress off your plate. Rental companies handle delivery, set up, and tear down, ensuring nothing breaks along the way. They also take care of all the post-event cleaning, like washing linens and polishing glassware, leaving you free to enjoy newlywed bliss instead of dealing with dirty napkins and boxes of centerpieces.

Trendy + timeless inventory

Another perk of renting? You’ll have access to the latest and greatest décor trends. Rental companies constantly update their inventory with fresh pieces that reflect what’s in style, from modern lounge furniture and statement arches to trending color palettes and charger plates. They know what’s popular this season and can help you curate a cohesive look that feels current and stylish without you having to buy items you’ll only use once.

Greener choice

Renting is also an eco-friendly option! You’ll be reducing waste, reusing items like dishes, linens, and furniture, and eliminating the need for single-use products. Many rental companies use industrial washers that clean large batches efficiently, saving water and energy compared to doing loads at home.

Save money (and sanity)

In most cases, renting is more cost-effective than buying. Many companies offer bulk discounts and a variety of price points to fit your budget. And if you don’t manage to resell your purchased décor, you’re stuck with both the cost and the clutter. Save money, space, and stress—rent your décor and focus on celebrating your day.

GREY GARDEN CREATIVE

Décor to explore

From giant tents and structures to tiny details like your bathroom signs and place cards—everything is décor! Check out some of our favorite elements:

Tents

A tent lets you take your wedding to the great outdoors, whatever the weather. In the sunshine, it will be your shade; in the rain, your umbrella; in the cold, your blanket—it’s an all-weather approved wedding staple.

Signage

You’ll need to give your guests some direction on where to sit at your ceremony and reception. You might want to remind them to share their pictures on social media using your hashtag—or gently request that they put their phones away, live in the moment, and let the photographer do their job. Maybe you have an expertly curated signature cocktail for your guests. The solution? Signs!

Furniture

Wedding furniture can also bring touches that your wedding wouldn’t have otherwise. Whether you want to create a lounge space with a vintage rug and velvet couches or host a cocktail hour with classy bar carts and chic high tops, you’ll need to rent some furniture!

Dance floor

The dance floor designates the dancing area during the reception, but it’s so much more than that! Rent a retro checkered-tile floor, lay down and layer different rugs, design a custom acrylic sticker, or create a raised platform to serve as a stage. Any of these make a great statement.

Marquees + neon signs

Light up your reception with customized, marquee letters and neon signs, which serve as both signage and décor!

Champagne walls

Sip and be seated. Greet your guests with a glass of bubbly as they find their table assignment on your seating chart. If a champagne wall is not for you, what about a donut or cake pop wall?

Mobile bars + booths

Vintage cars and trailers are making their way around the wedding scene. These mobile additions are a unique way for guests to enjoy a cocktail or a photo booth. Can’t include a mobile bar at your reception? Perks to a vehicle on wheels, they’ll travel wherever! Consider adding them to your bridal shower or rehearsal dinner.

Balloon arches

Adding balloons to your wedding décor will help make a statement without breaking the bank. Balloon arches and sculptures are one of a kind and always customizable.

Floral walls

Elevate your wedding with a wall installation crafted entirely from wedding flowers and lush greenery. These decorative walls not only add a touch of elegance but can also accommodate champagne glasses or double as your escort card display.

Elegant Ice Creations Q+A

When people think of ice sculptures, they usually imagine something extravagant and over the top. But they don’t have to be! We sat down with Elegant Ice Creations to get the scoop on the ice sculptures of today.

Q: We like the idea of an ice sculpture, but worried that it won’t fit with our aesthetic. How can an ice sculpture work with today’s wedding trends?

A: There’s no limit to what you can do with an ice sculpture! Rustic? Your monograms on ice. Boho? Vases for your florals. Minimalist? A sophisticated candle display. We help you design a custom carving to go with any aesthetic.

Q: It seems simple, but what prevents it from melting during our wedding?

A: Ice will always melt. However, keeping it in a controlled environment helps slow the melting down. A sculpture at a rooftop reception in the middle of July? Direct sunlight is no friend to ice, but if we move it to a spot of shade (or better yet, air conditioning!), we can slow down the melting. Our ice team has the experience and expertise to advise you on best practices for keeping your ice sculpture as long as possible!

Q: We want an ice sculpture, but can’t justify the cost if it is purely decorative. What sort of functions can it serve at our wedding?

A: Ice sculptures can be so much more than decoration! They can be used to serve seafood or fruit, display flowers, and more! Almost any ice sculpture can be made into a luge which will chill beverages as you pour them. Why choose decoration versus functionality when you can have both?

Q: We have a highly specific vision for an ice sculpture. What’s the most unique ice sculpture you have ever been asked to create?

A: We created a family portrait of four brothers that replicated Mount Rushmore, a 16-foot ice bar, and a very large candelabra that held 19 candles and was eight feet high! Keep in mind that not all ice sculptures have to be huge and over the top to be breathtaking. Big or small, we will create something that you will never forget.

Light it up

The lighting design you choose will shape your event and set the right tone like no other element there. No matter what your theme, we’ve come up with an option to light your venue and keep the party going, even after dark!

Chandeliers

Chandeliers can add an air of class and elegance to any venue. For a whimsical, romantic feel, drape fabric, greenery, flowers, or crystals from the chandelier. You could also collect chandeliers of different sizes, metals, bulbs, and styles to create an eclectic vibe.

Candles

Candles are the ultimate “mood lighting,” creating a warm, cozy, romantic ambiance. Combine shapes, sizes, and heights for a centerpiece, use them to light up your cake table, or place them along the aisle of your ceremony! Use candles that are fragrance-free so you don’t create an overwhelmingly perfumed environment.

Lanterns

Hang antique lanterns at different levels to create an enchanting ceiling display, or line the path to your venue with vintage or paper lanterns to guide the way. You can even have a helium paper lantern release at your reception departure!

Bistro lighting

Bistro lights are a favorite because of their versatility! String them above the dance floor. Hang them from your table or wall and cover with fabric for a muted backdrop.

Edison bulbs

An Edison light bulb is transparent with visible, winding filaments. They may be uniquely shaped or have an antique tint to the glass. Hang bulbs individually or in a bundle. The warm hue will set a vintage tone at your reception.

Neon signs

This modern and edgy lighting option will make your wedding space truly unique! Hang “Cheers” on the bar, “Better Together” above your head table, or get your new last name in lights for home decor after the wedding!

Uplighting

True to their name, these lights are directed upward, highlighting walls, pillars, cakes, centerpieces, and more. You can even place them under tablecloths, curtains, and drapery to add a colorful glow. These lights come in a variety of colors, so you can choose a look that complements your color scheme or venue.

Gobo lights

Gobo lights are stencils put over a spotlight that can be projected onto floors, walls, ceilings, or even fabric. Create a custom monogram of your name to light up the wall behind the head table or project a design onto the dance floor!

Questions to ask about lighting:

• What kind of lighting options do you offer?

• Will you help with the design options?

• Can you match the lighting to our colors?

• What kind of requirements do you need from our venue?

• Do you own your own equipment?

• How much space do you need?

• How do you hide cables?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Questions to ask about linens:

• What items do you offer? (sashes, chair covers, tablecloths, napkins, draping, etc.)

• How much do you charge for your linens?

• Do you have samples of your linens?

• How do you clean and press your linens?

• Will you dress the tables/chairs?

• Will you show us how to dress them ourselves?

• Will you come collect your linens after the reception?

• What is your policy on missing linens after the wedding?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

We’ve got you covered

Linens play an important role in creating the base for a consistent look throughout your reception space. White linens are more commonly used for weddings because of their clean lines and blank canvas effect, but we love the idea of adding some color or texture.

Mix and match

Try mixing things up by using an array of shades within your color scheme, adding a printed table runner across white linens, or placing colorful, folded napkins on each plate!

Think about the seats

Dressing your chairs in covers or sashes will create a more unified look and a touch of elegance. There are a variety of ways to tie knots and sashes on chairs. After perusing rental warehouses or online galleries, ask your rental company if they’ll be setting up the linens or if they can teach you how to properly execute the look!

Draping

Finally, well-placed drapes can create an ethereal or elegant atmosphere. A solid, opaque linen is the perfect backdrop for a cake display, but more sheer drapes tied to wooden pillars will add an effortlessly chic look to your venue.

Your guests will spend a lot of time at their tables. Make sure they have something worth looking at by choosing lovely linens!

Have your cake & eat it, too!

Chances are you’ve been visualizing every wedding day detail—from the length of your veil to the reception playlist and, of course, the most delicious part of your nuptials: the cake! The wedding cake is a collective masterpiece created by the bride and groom, along with a savvy baker and decorator. Each cake is as unique as the couple that designed it. This is a focal point of your reception, so put as much thought and planning into it as you do all aspects of your wedding day! Here are the steps we’d take to finding our perfect cake.

Reflect other elements of your celebration

Is your wedding more traditional, or is it laid-back? Are you in love with your color scheme? With the myriad of possibilities, bakers can match the cake to anything, from the invites to the bouquet.

Start comparing your favorites

After doing some inspiration research, do you notice a pattern emerging? Chances are you’ll be drawn to a particular look or design element.

Find local bakers + cake artists

You can begin to interview and compare licensed wedding cake companies up to a year in advance. Don’t forget to bring your copy of Today’s Bride magazine to reference these questions to ask!

Portfolio of recently decorated cakes

Look at their portfolio, paying attention to the execution of design. Remember, each decorator has their own style and strong suits, be sure to take note of the decorator that suits your personal style.

Questions to ask about cake + desserts:

• Do you have a portfolio?

• Are your designs customizable?

• Can you match our colors?

• What flavors do you offer?

• Can we do a taste test of the flavors?

• How far in advance are the cakes prepared?

• Do you provide cake-cutting services?

• Are cakes charged by the slice or tier?

Comparing prices

Charging per serving is the standard in the cake industry, but some companies will charge based on the cake itself, so be sure to ask how they’re coming up with the numbers. You’ll also want to find out if the bakery will provide someone to cut and distribute the cake, as well as the price of the service. Your instinct might be to choose the cheapest baker, but your decision should heavily consider what looks, tastes, and fits your wedding best!

Arrange a tasting!

Sometimes couples choose a beautiful cake but neglect to taste it (yes—seriously!). Call your top bakeries and let them know you’re considering them for your wedding. Some bakeries will have open house tastings where couples can sample a variety of different cakes, while others host private tastings with your selection of a few flavors.

Once you’ve found a baker who understands your vision, trust them to bring your dream cake to life. The right design, flavor, and finish will come together to create a show-stopping piece for the reception.

• Do you offer other dessert options?

• Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?

• Can you provide a box/wrapping for the top tier of the cake?

• When do we need to order by?

• Is there a delivery/set-up charge?

• When will the cake be delivered/set up?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

OFF PATH PHOTOGRAPHY
MATT BESENYODI PHOTOGRAPHY

Important to know

• Plan for 1.5 servings of cake per guest. If you’re having a dessert bar, order less cake.

• Fondant is a type of icing that is perfect for creating sculptures and adornments and is often draped over the cake for a smooth finish. However, its clay-like consistency doesn’t agree with every couple’s taste.

• Traditionally, the top tier of your wedding cake is kept frozen and eaten as a celebration on your first anniversary. Some cake shops may provide a box or wrapping for the top tier, so be sure to ask if this is included.

• You should start researching bakeries in your area eight months before your wedding and try to place the order about four to six months before.

• Most bakeries will be willing to host a tasting for you and your fiancé. However, some may charge a fee or limit the number of flavor samples.

HOW MUCH CAKE DO WE NEED?

If you’re trying to make a grand statement with a tall, dramatic cake by adding in fake layers of styrofoam, you’ll be disappointed to find out that the cost isn’t all that much cheaper. Opt for a real layer of cake or a few kitchen cakes instead. It’s always better to have too much than not enough!

6 inches: 10 servings

8 inches: 20-24 servings

10 inches: 30-38 servings

12 inches: 45-58 servings

Example: If you want a 3 tiered cake and you have 80 guests, you will want at least a 12-inch, a 10-inch, and an 8-inch cake. This equals 120 servings.

What is that frosting?

Fondant

This modeling clay-like frosting has a thick consistency but a smooth finish. It’s typically used to create more formal, fancy designs, figurines, and flowers.

Buttercream

Buttercream is a more common frosting used on birthday cakes with a creamy and rich flavor. You can texturize the buttercream for a dramatic finish or smooth it out for clean lines.

Marzipan

This frosting is similar to fondant but made with almond paste. This paste gives it more elasticity and a nutty flavor.

Ganache

Typically made from chocolate, ganache is most often used as a filling between layers of cake. It has a very dense, fudge-like consistency.

Naked cake

A naked cake is a trend where the cake tiers and fillings are seen through a very thin layer of buttercream.

Let them eat sweets

With the popularity of non-traditional wedding celebrations, naturally comes the rise of non-traditional desserts! You may choose to serve these confectionary favorites in addition to cake, or you can ditch the cake altogether and let these sweets take center stage.

Cupcakes or cake pops

Adorable, customizable, and so much more fun to eat, miniature cakes are where trend meets tradition.

Donuts

Who doesn’t love a fluffy glazed donut? These universally adored treats are the perfect party favor and can be stacked in a tier to resemble a cake.

Macarons

Macarons are the trendiest treat for modern brides and grooms. With an array of flavors ranging from tart lemon to sweet raspberry to rich tiramisu, these colorful cookies will have your guests returning to the dessert table all night long.

Candy or mini desserts

Everything is better in miniature—that’s why we call it fun-sized! Whether you choose to display your favorite candies in mason jars or offer mini cheesecake bites, tiny treats are sure to be a hit with your guests

Assortment of pies

Pies are the comfort food of the dessert realm! In fact, it’s quite possible your guests won’t remember cake was even an option once they get their hands on a delicious slice of apple crumb pie!

DANA CUBBAGE WEDDINGS

Between the number of tiers, cupcakes versus cookies, or an entire dessert table spread, trust your bakery to bring your vision to life! Whether you decide to have a traditional wedding cake or opt for something different, no need to stress... it’s all a piece of cake!

Options for transportation

There are more options than you’d think when it comes to choosing the transportation for your wedding day! But which vehicle will work best for you? Questions to ask about transportation:

• Are you registered with the Department of Transportation?

• What kind of vehicles do you have?

• Can we see the actual vehicle we’re renting?

• What is your vehicle substitution policy?

• Who will be the chauffeur?

• What does your insurance cover?

• What is the minimum number of hours?

• Is there an overtime fee?

• What is your policy on eating and drinking?

• What music options are in the vehicle?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Limousines

A classic limo is the perfect choice for a traditional, elegant wedding and will show off your “Just Married” status perfectly. When renting a limousine, be conscious of the number of people who will be riding. A 14-passenger limo sounds like it would fit 14 people, right? It may be tight when you’re all dressed up, so allow for some room by choosing a vehicle that technically fits a few more people than you expect.

Party bus

If your wedding will be the ultimate dance party and you want to start it off—or end

the night—right, a party bus is the perfect vehicle for your wedding day.

A party bus is designed for bigger parties of 25-35 people and allows you to move around and dance. You can invite your wedding party and their significant others to join you on this ride! It can also be used as a shuttle for your guests to arrive at your wedding in style.

Vintage + luxury cars

Renting a vintage or luxury car can be a fun and unique option when it comes to choosing your transportation. It’s the perfect option for a classic getaway with cans trailing behind.

Carriage

Made for a fairytale wedding, a horse-drawn carriage is the perfect entrance or exit for a princess bride. A carriage makes for some gorgeous photos. However, if you need to travel several miles or get on the highway, a carriage isn’t a logical—or even possible—choice.

Trolley

A trolley can be such a cool alternative to traditional vehicles! You and your guests will be treated to a unique and selfie-worthy ride and may even be treated to a tour of the city as you make your way to the venue!

11-14 Points: VW Van

You’re a free spirit and you don’t like to blend in with a crowd. Break away from the trends and embrace your inner hippie with this unique getaway car!

Going places

Driving to the ceremony

Ride to your ceremony with friends or parents so you don’t have to worry about picking your car up from the ceremony site the next morning.

Don’t forget about the wedding party

If your party rides with you in a bus or limo, how will they get home? Provide a shuttle service to the hotel or hire the party bus long enough to get them back to their cars.

Don’t leave your guests to fend for themselves

It’s considerate to provide shuttle service for your guests, both to the reception and to the hotel.

Your wedding gifts need a ride home

You didn’t drive to the reception, so you won’t have a car to take all your gifts home. Assign a family member or close friend to gather your gifts and drop them off at your house.

Your last impression

This is your guests’ last impression of you! Don’t make your grand getaway in your 2008 Honda Civic… make it count by having a unique and fun vehicle!

C. October D. December

15-19 Points: Vintage Truck

You’re country through and through, and it shows in every detail of your wedding. This ceremony send-off is perfect for a rustic or vintage reception!

20-24 Points: Vintage Bike

Shopping for gifts

Timing and availability

By the time your bridal shower invitations are sent out, your registry should be fully prepared and accessible to guests. Ideally, you should start building your registry around the same time you send out your save-the-dates, about 12 to 8 months before your wedding. This allows guests attending earlier celebrations like engagement parties or bridal showers to have access.

Where to register

While it’s suggested to register at 3-6 different places, make sure to choose a variety of retailers that cater to your style and preferences. Include both online and physical stores to make it easy for guests with different shopping habits. Consider a mix of large department stores and specialty shops.

Make it personal

Your registry should reflect your personality and lifestyle as a couple. It’s no longer about sticking to the traditional “what’s expected” list. Do you both love to cook? Register for that high-quality chef’s knife or the pasta maker you’ve had your eye on. Are you both fitness enthusiasts? Add items like yoga mats or smart fitness gear. Make sure the list feels tailored to your life together.

Price ranges

It’s crucial to include items across a wide price range to accommodate every guest’s budget. Guests appreciate the flexibility of choosing a gift that aligns with their relationship to you and their finances. From smaller items like picture frames and glassware to higher-ticket

items such as furniture or experiences, a diverse registry ensures every guest can find something to contribute.

Group gifting

Many registries now allow for group gifting, where guests can contribute to a larger gift like a piece of furniture or an expensive experience. Mentioning this feature when communicating about your registry can encourage friends or family members to collaborate on a gift that might be out of one’s price range.

Registry links

Be sure to provide easy access to your registry. You can include a small insert with registry information in your bridal shower invites or simply link it to your wedding website for convenience. Avoid adding registry information directly to the wedding

invitation, as traditional etiquette still suggests keeping the focus on the event itself.

Stay organized

Between showers, the wedding, and surprise doorstep deliveries, gifts can start piling up fast. Stay on top of it by tracking each gift as it comes in—whether it’s in a notebook or a shared Google Sheet. Note who sent it, what they gave, and when you mailed the thank-you. Writing your cards in small batches as gifts arrive will make the process much more manageable and help ensure no one is forgotten when it’s time to send your thanks.

Not sure what to put on the registry? Check it out!

The night before

When does the rehearsal take place?

The ceremony rehearsal traditionally takes place the day before the wedding. You can host a meal prior to or after the ceremony rehearsal, or you can hold both on entirely different days.

Who should we invite?

Everyone involved in the ceremony should attend the rehearsal, including bridesmaids, groomsmen, parents, the flower girl and ring bearer, the officiant, and readers. It’s considerate to invite the spouse or significant other of each attendant to the rehearsal dinner. Regarding the dinner, the guest list can be as simple as including your immediate family, the wedding party, and their significant others, although it’s becoming more popular to make it a larger event for out-of-town guests. If you prefer an intimate gathering but don’t want to exclude other guests, consider hosting the rehearsal dinner two nights before the wedding day and having a welcome party for outof-town guests the night before the wedding.

Where should we hold the dinner?

The rehearsal dinner should be held near the ceremony site. It’s considerate and fun to vary the dinner options from the wedding meal—such as offering steak or seafood if you’re having an Italian menu at your reception—so guests can have different experiences! Where you decide to have the rehearsal dinner depends on the budget of whoever is throwing it (traditionally the groom’s parents) and what kind of party the host envisions. Most commonly, rehearsal dinners are held at local restaurants. However, you can use a banquet hall or your reception venue.

What takes place at the rehearsal dinner?

Traditionally, the best man offers a toast to the soon-to-be spouses. The groom then follows with a toast to his bride and her parents. You should make sure that all guests are introduced to one another, either by formal introductions or through mingling. A special touch would be to introduce your wedding party and say something personal about each one, like how you met or why you asked them to be in your wedding. If you’d rather have a more relaxed and casual atmosphere with no formal speeches, that’s okay too! The rehearsal dinner is a great time to relax with your family and friends without worrying too much about tradition.

Questions to ask about rehearsals:

Ceremony venue:

• What time will the rehearsal begin?

• How long will the rehearsal take?

• Who should attend the rehearsal?

Rehearsal dinner venue:

• How many can you seat?

• Do you have a special menu?

• How many servers will you provide?

• Can you accommodate special dietary needs?

• Is there a bar? Do you have options to limit the bar tab?

• When do you need a final head count?

Don’t forget to ask the general questions on page 8

Taking care of guests

If you’re expecting out-of-town guests to attend your wedding, you’ll need to book a block of hotel rooms for their overnight stays. Reserving a block of rooms doesn’t mean that you’ll have a specific area for your guests to stay; it simply means that you have reserved a set number of rooms at agreedupon rates for your guests to book.

You’ll want to look for hotels that offer open or courtesy blocks. This means that you won’t have to pay upfront and won’t be charged for any unused rooms. Start out by booking a smaller number and adding more as you go. A typical rule of thumb is to count how many out-of-town guests you have and divide it in half. If that seems like a small number, consider that some guests may make other arrangements or decide to drive home.

Ask your hotel about any amenities they have—like complimentary brunch, shuttle service, or welcome bag deliveries. It’s considerate to leave a goodie bag in each guest room. They can be filled with local sweets, toiletries, or wedding weekend necessities! Most importantly, double-check that everything you’ve agreed upon is in your contract, and ask about their cancellation policy before signing.

Questions to ask about guest accommodations:

• How early should we block rooms?

• What is the minimum number of rooms that we can block?

• How much do the rooms cost?

• What does the rate include?

• When do you release the rooms?

• Do we have to pay for unused rooms?

• Can we put gift bags in our guests’ rooms?

• Do you have a honeymoon suite?

• Do you provide a shuttle?

All about bridal showers

Before the big day arrives, the bridal shower is a chance to celebrate the couple with love, laughter, and a few thoughtful gifts. It’s a more intimate gathering that brings together close family and friends to honor the upcoming marriage. Whether hosting at a home, a restaurant, or a local venue, the shower should reflect the couple’s personality and style. From choosing the perfect location to planning activities, organizing the guest list, and setting the timeline, every detail helps create a memorable day the bride and groom will cherish forever.

Hosting

Typically, the bridesmaids and maid of honor plan and host the bridal shower, but duties can be taken over by other friends or family members.

Location

Showers can be held at a variety of locations. Consider asking bridesmaids, parents, or close family friends if they would be willing to host at their house. It is also common to hold the bridal shower at a restaurant, winery, park, or banquet hall. If you do plan on hosting the bridal shower somewhere other than a house, make the reservation as soon as possible.

Timeline

Bridal showers are typically held about three months before the wedding. However, talk with the couple and make sure there are no conflicts.

Guest list

Never send an invite to the bridal shower if that person won’t be invited to the wedding. It is most common to invite close friends and family of the bride, and sometimes close friends and family of the groom as well.

Menu

When it comes to the food, consider the time of day the shower will be held and the budget. If it is a tight budget and the party is mid-afternoon, consider serving appetizers only. If you plan on throwing an early evening bash, you could serve a spread of desserts. Be careful of hosting the party around meal times, like lunch or dinner, as guests may expect there to be a full meal rather than snacks.

Games + activities

Bridal shower games and activities can really liven up the party and are a great way for guests to find out more about the couple. Set out a box where people can write down fun date ideas for the newly married couple, offer words of wisdom to keep their relationship strong, or guess the number of Hershey Kisses® in a jar are popular shower activities.

Favors

Party favors should be a small gesture to thank the guests for coming. It can be anything from an engraved wine glass to a cute goody bag filled with chocolates. No matter what it is, people will simply appreciate the thought.

Heartfelt vows

Wedding vows hold a special place in the heart of a wedding ceremony. Vows are not just words; they’re the soul of a marriage, the essence of what binds two people together. They encapsulate the dreams, the expectations, and the love that a couple shares.

Vows are a reminder that marriage is not just a piece of paper or a fancy ceremony and wedding. It’s a promise to stand by each other through thick and thin, to celebrate the highs and weather the lows. They’re the words that symbolize the beginning of a beautiful journey and the agreement to face life’s ups and downs together.

Personal vows

Personal vows offer a unique and intimate touch to a wedding ceremony. They allow you to express your love in your own words, adding a deeply personal and emotional element to the proceedings. Personal vows can be incredibly touching and provide an opportunity to share your unique love story, hopes, and promises with loved ones. However, writing personal vows can be a bit challenging for some, as it requires creativity and the ability to put one’s feelings into words. There’s also the risk of being overly sentimental or emotional, which may be uncomfortable for some couples.

Traditional vows

On the other hand, traditional vows have stood the test of time for a reason. They are a classic and familiar choice, ensuring that couples are following a script that has been used in countless weddings. Traditional vows are often shorter and simpler, making them less daunting for those who feel uncomfortable with public speaking. However, they might not capture the full depth of your unique bond, as they lack the personalized touch that personal vows provide.

Private vows

Exchanging private vows before the ceremony offers a bit of intimacy between you and your soon-to-be spouse. Couples can share their most heartfelt sentiments with each other in a more private and personal setting, free from the nerves or pressures of performing in front of a crowd. This intimacy can create a deeper connection and allow you to be more candid and vulnerable in your expressions.

No matter which route you decide for your vows, just remember that your wedding vows are a public declaration of your love and commitment, holding a special place in your hearts, and serving as a constant reminder of the love and promises you share with one another.

Changing your name

If you plan to change your name, you will also need to change your: Social Security Card, Driver’s License, Bank Accounts, Mail Subscriptions, Voter Registration, Employer Records, Utilities, Insurance, Social Media, TSA PreCheck®, and Passport.*

*Passports take about 8-11 weeks to process, and the names on your plane ticket and passport must match. Learn more about passports on page 124.

Marriage license logistics

Getting married is a legal act, and it will require one basic detail to make your union official: a marriage license. Obtaining a marriage license is a very simple procedure involving only a short trip to the probate court located in your residing county courthouse.

Where to apply

If either you or your fiancé live in the state of Ohio, you must apply for the marriage license in the county in which you live.

If neither of you are a resident of Ohio but plan on getting married within the state, you must apply in the county where the ceremony takes place.

If you are an Ohio resident but are getting married in another state, you must apply in the other state.

When to apply

Some counties in the state of Ohio do have a waiting period to receive your license, so it would be wise to apply a few weeks early.

Licenses are valid for only 60 days and must be sent in within 30 days of your wedding. After the wedding, your officiant will send your signed license to the local marriage license bureau. It is then the couple’s responsibility to request a copy of their marriage license from the court for a small fee.

Know before you go

What else to know

You will want extra certified copies of your marriage license. They’ll need to be submitted when applying to change your name and to update your Social Security card, driver’s license, and passport.

Requirements vary from county to county in order to receive your marriage license, so if you have any further questions, call the Probate Court at your issuing county’s courthouse.

To apply for your marriage license you will need:

• Birth Certificate

• Driver’s license or state-issued photo ID

• Proof of Citizenship/Residency

• Death Certificate if widowed

• Divorce Decree if divorced

• Payment for fees (accepted forms of payment vary from county to county)

Obtaining a marriage license looks different in different places. Here’s a county-by-county rundown of the basics you should know in advance. Call ahead to confirm office hours. Some counties operate by appointment only. You’ll also want to verify the license fee and accepted payment methods including cash, card, and/or check.
