Wendy Doyle: An Empowering Force.

Wendy had a little lamb.
Really.
When she was growing up in Johnson County, Missouri, she received a lamb as a gift.
For Wendy Doyle, the greater gift was a grandmother who blazed trails.
As president and CEO of United Women’s Empowerment- United WE (formerly the Women’s Foundation), Wendy builds on the legacy of her grandmother to create real, positive change for all women, and by extension, all of society.
How did your grandmother and family relationships play a role in where you are today?
My grandmother was a tax accountant back when women really didn’t do that. My grandpa was an attorney. His office, really a suite, was on the first floor of their building, and her tiny office was tucked away upstairs. I think a lot about that just in terms of proximity. The barriers that she broke and all that she accomplished by being focused on delivering excellent work product rather than "I'm a woman and you’re a man."
In 1991, a group of forward-thinking community leaders created the Women’s Foundation, devoted to philanthropic outreach aimed at equity and opportunity. You still do that but, with the new name, United WE, you also have a new focus?
We are investing more in research, then using that research to look at where we can make a big impact on policy. Creating systemic change. We, intentionally, want to be more inclusive, reaching out to women of color and women in the LGBTQ community. We want more women and men coming together to solve problems such as pay equity and creating entrepreneurship opportunities.
One of those problems is making sure women are in the room when decisions are made. That brings us to The Appointments Project.
