FROM THE STUDY WINDOW Welcome to the 2022-2023 edition of the Tockingtonian, an edition that celebrates what has been yet another highly successful year for the school. The academic results of our pupils speak for themselves 79% of this year’s Year 8 Common Entrance results were in excess of 70%, with many marks over 90% and even 98%. On the back of such impressive scores a group of children volunteered to attempt English GCSE. This was marked internally and the results were truly remarkable with all pupils achieving either Grade 7 or Grade 8. I mention such results so early in my welcome as they are something to be celebrated and come as a consequence of many years of hard work from both pupils and staff alike.

Our first Speech Day since 2019 offered an opportunity to celebrate every aspect of our school life. Whilst the impressive achievements in the classroom would be hard to find in most other schools it should be remembered that our school offers far more, as you will see during the next

110 pages. Drama this year, from our Nursery Nativity through to the Lower School Christmas Production, the Year 3 & 4 mini Shakespeare Festival to the Year 5 & 6 production of Peter Pan and the Year 7 & 8 performance of Alice in Wonderland, has all been an absolute pleasure to see and hear.

The Music Department has gone from strength to strength with growing numbers of children now receiving one to one lessons in an expanding variety of instruments including the cello, saxophone, piano, violin, drums, classical guitar, rock guitar, singing and many more. Our choirs too are growing in numbers and the quality of their singing is reaching new heights.

Sport has been a notable highlight again during the past eleven months with the children representing the school in over four hundred fixtures as well as regional and national events for swimming, athletics and cross country. I would also like to make mention of the extracurricular provision and, whilst a full write up is included this year, it is worth noting the huge variety and number of clubs

and activities on offer, all of which help to make every school day an exciting one for all our pupils.

Our Nursery, under the leadership of Mrs Sally Pearce, has become an extremely cohesive team, who are very much motivated by both our children and by looking ahead to continuously create an environment that never rests on its laurels. The start of the Tockington journey is certainly in safe hands!

The success of our school is very much a team effort and while it is impossible for me to mention everyone by name, I am extremely grateful to all my colleagues for their continued dedication to both

the children and the school. In one Speech Day address I once commented that inspirational staff feed off inspirational children and this has most certainly been the case this year. Well done to you all!

Sadly, the end of the academic year brought with it its usual farewells and I cannot let this welcome go by without mentioning the retirement of Mr Jonathan Jones. Jonathan joined the school in 1986 and took no time at all in embracing the ethos that makes TMS so very special.

He has had such a positive impact on generation after generation of OTs so it was no surprise that such a large number of former pupils, colleagues and parents attended his farewell evening straight after Prize Giving. We heard from OT, Mr Paul Whittaker, who described Jonathan as a ‘legend’ and who can dispute this. I would like to give special recognition too to Jonathan’s family for their support as without that, our school would not have been able to have such a truly remarkable teacher and colleague inspiring our school

for so many years; thank you to Kate, Ceredig and Dalis!

Whether you know him as Mr Jones, Jonathan or JJ, I am sure you will all join me in thanking him for his dedication to all things TMS, for always putting the children first and to wish him a long and happy retirement.

I hope you enjoy this edition as much as we did making it all happen.

OUR NURSERY The Nursery has had another amazing, fun-packed year.

The Woodpeckers kicked off September learning about hibernation, making hedgehogs, and looking for animal tracks while enjoying their environmental walks through the grounds and visiting the local farmer’s fields. Natural resources were gathered en route and indoor materials used for outdoor den-building, where hot chocolate drinks and biscuits were enjoyed.

The Owls had great fun nest-building and especially picking blackberries while exploring the environment. There were many purple hands and lips upon their return to nursery! The blackberries were examined through shape and colour. Some were mixed with apples to make a crumble, using various skills including following a recipe, counting, and measuring ingredients. These were sent home to be cooked and hopefully, enjoyed!

Both Woodpeckers and Owls celebrated Christmas by making various crafts. The Owls staged a production entitled ‘It’s a Baby!’, with parents in attendance enjoying the event. The Woodpeckers sang

a variety of Christmas songs. This activity was shared with parents via a link for them to savour at home.

During the Spring Term, the Woodpeckers participated in ‘healthy eating’ using the produce grown in the kitchen garden. They used many cooking skills and tried their hand at cutting, spreading, and rolling. The children made various tasty foods including tomato pizzas and apple cakes.

The Owls prepared their working garden by digging, weeding, and sweeping. The children then planted seed potatoes which they nurtured by watering regularly.

Various mathematical language was used in addition to problem-solving skills, to decide which potato plant would eventually be the tallest. The potatoes were harvested during the summer, cooked, and enjoyed for lunch by all the Nursery children.

At the beginning of May, the Nursery experienced some changes. We wished Laura (Woodpecker 2 Leader) well as she started her maternity leave.

Our Woodpecker 1 Leader, Esther, took over the role of Woodpecker Leader and both classes were joined.

New staff members were recruited, and the Nursery continued to thrive.

We received our annual delivery of Butterfly Growing Kits and watched in amazement as the live caterpillars grew and developed into butterflies.

The children witnessed their release in the nursery garden and watched them as they sat on the flowers before flying away.

Everyone honoured National Storytelling Week, with children bringing in their favourite books from home to share with their peers.

The Owl children celebrated the end of term by making individual journey sticks from natural resources, collected to identify locations previously visited around the school grounds.

All the children attended Sports Day and were awarded a medal on completion of the races. This was followed by a picnic with their families.

LOWER SCHOOL It’s been another great year in the Lower School!

In the Autumn Term, the children were excited to start a new year group and explore their new classrooms. As well as their academic subjects they were also introduced to new sports, musical instruments, and drama opportunities.

Before we knew it, we were rehearsing for our Nativity play which this year was ‘Baarmy Bethlehem’. All the children performed brilliantly and enjoyed themselves.

In the Summer Term, the whole Lower School participated with enthusiasm in both their Swimming Gala and Sports Day. A big thank you to Mr Perez and Mr Ross for organising the events and making the lessons so much fun throughout the year.

All the children have worked hard this year and made great progress. This has been proven with the excellent results achieved. A big thank you to the whole Lower School team for another fabulous year.

Reception The Reception classes embarked on their new journey to ‘big school’ in September and were welcomed with balloons to look after for the day and to help with the separation from Mummy & Daddy – it worked!

We started the term finding out about our pets. The children created posters about their own pets or indeed the pets they wished they had. Reverend Moss came to visit us with his pet dog, Wispa, and the children learnt how Wispa was a failed guide dog and how sad she was before she met Reverend Moss and his family. All the children engaged with the dog visit and for those who were a little nervous, they overcame some of their fears. This led us to plan a trip to Cattle Country in Berkeley, where the children saw a range of animals and we started to talk about harvest time with them. It was a fabulous trip - the first school trip the children had ever been on. On return, we spent the whole day learning

about pumpkins - we decorated and carved them and talked about harvest traditions around the world.

Stories and c u l t u r e s around the world then became a linear topic for this year and may we thank all the parents who offered their help with their own cultural stories and activities. It was a brilliant team effort!

The children started to show an interest in people who helped us at school: Mrs Pullin, Mr Morris, the kitchen staff as well as the Estates team. We worked with our wider TMS community to find out about their jobs and then we invited members of the Thornbury community into school.

We had visits from dentists, fire officers, paramedics, doctors, and police officers. The children thoroughly enjoyed these visits, and it gave us a good stimulus for writing.

And then Christmas was upon us! A naughty little elf kept appearing in the classroom and the children started to get excited. We performed a modernday nativity, polished wellies for Santa Claus and learnt about Hungarian traditions courtesy of Mrs. Abraham.

The term culminated in a wonderful performance of Beauty and The Beast from a visiting pantomime company.

We said goodbye to Mr. Alex Foulner who had been the most amazing TA for the children and wished him well on his adventures around the world.

The Spring term started with a positive energy and saw us exploring healthy eating using the text ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. We looked at healthy eating options and lifestyles. The children learnt how to make proper tea and set up a formal tea party.

Lots of role play and writing came from this topic. Returning to our linear theme of the year, Chinese New Year was celebrated with many activities including chopstick games, Chinese writing, and a delicious Chinese lunch. Our Chinese children and families collaborated with us and we thank you all for your support. The children showed their love for their friends and family by planting a Valentines tulip and making cards. The children asked pertinent questions about the ancient story of St. Valentine.

We continued our cultural themes by celebrating St. David’s Day and Miss Elkins provided us with a series of activities and a wonderful story about St. David. We also celebrated Carnivale and made masks with the children as well as Mother’s Day cards. The children learnt a whole poem which they performed and it was sent home to all our wonderful Mummies – we doubt there was a dry eye in the house!

The end of term was in sight, and we still had more to explore. The children visited St. Mary’s church in Olveston and we learnt all about the

Easter story with Reverend Moss and Reverend Lloyd. We made stained glass windows in the church and asked pertinent questions about its architecture as well as the Easter story. It was wonderful to share our

local community with them. The FOTM yet again spoiled us all with a wonderful Easter egg hunt - the children were thrilled to meet the actual Easter bunny!

The summer term started with more enthusiasm! Mr. George joined the Reception team of teachers and we are so thankful for all his hard work. The sun showed promise, our Reception garden was asking for plants and the children were ready to learn! Our topic this term was cultural tales. We learnt about stories from all around the world. Each child gave

a book presentation this term. They were all very brave and we are proud of every one of them! They showed a good understanding of their text and presented with confidence. Evie M’s book ‘The Garden Giant’ resonated so much with us that we decided to write our own version, turn it into a play and perform it to the Reception class from Wycliffe College. A monumental task indeed! However, the children were amazing and in two weeks we had written a play with all the ingredients of a good fairy tale, found props, sewed together felt elves and performed to our new Wycliffe College friends! We shared a teddy bear’s picnic with them too and immersed ourselves in forest school activities.

Activity Week was all about ‘Under the Sea’ and we had a fantastic trip to Bristol Aquarium where we learnt so much. The Daddy seahorses were our favourites! The children crafted beautiful octopus from socks, jellyfish from recycled jelly pots and we sewed yet more fish themed puppets.

The end of the year drew close and we had to say goodbye to 2023.

To all our Reception children - you have amazed us with your kindness, empathy towards others, attitude to learning and academic achievements.

Year 1 What a hard-working, busy, and fun year we have had in Year 1! On the very first day back in September, the children walked confidently into the classroom and have worked extremely hard ever since.

In the Autumn Term, the children became detectives during our Supertato Literacy unit. We walked into the classroom one day to find chairs upside down, pencils all over the floor and poor vegetables taped to the wall!

We knew who the culprit was, evil pea. We created our own ‘WANTED’ posters to track him down and finally managed to catch evil pea in a pot of jelly. Some of the children enjoyed eating pea jelly, other children…not so much! We enjoyed taking part in a ‘smell challenge’ during our Human Body topic in science. We smelt lots of different things such as coffee, vinegar and lime juice. We were visited by Dinomania in November and had the pleasure of meeting Nancy the raptor amongst other dinosaurs. We learnt

so many facts about dinosaurs and even posed for a picture with a few.

During Christmas time, we cleaned our wellies for St Nicholas and the next morning, found some traditional Hungarian sweets inside of them.

We took part in our fantastic Nativity play ‘Baarmy Bethlehem’ and sang beautifully as soldiers, camels, and townspeople to name but a few.

We finished off the term with a fantastic trip to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm which tied in with our animals around the world topic. Some of the children were very brave and had an opportunity to hold snails, snakes, and cockroaches.

We also enjoyed an Easter Egg hunt organised by FOTM with the help of the Year 8 children and the Easter bunny himself!

In the Spring Term we returned to school with much energy and determination. We started the term with a rather chilly but sunny sensory walk around the school. We used our senses to describe what we could see, hear, and smell. This helped us inform our descriptive writing for Literacy. In maths, we learnt how to use number lines accurately using lots of physical resources as well as working on our team building skills.

We conducted lots of experiments in science, our favourite experiment was testing to see if different materials were waterproof. Luckily, we were very careful and there weren’t any spillages!

We ended the year on a high with our fun, jam-packed Summer Term schedule. We enjoyed the King’s Coronation where we dressed up in red, white, and blue. We created our own collages using the silhouette of King Charles and took part in lots of fun coronation activities. The children sang and played their percussion instruments beautifully in the Lower School Concert. We had a lot of energy for our fantastic swimming gala where we implemented all the key swimming skills we have learnt this year in our lessons. Well done Year 1, you have been fantastic!

individual presentations on stage in front of a Lower School audience and parents. WOW! One of Miss Gooch’s favourite English lessons this year was when we used our new Lower School Chromebooks to perform and film ‘cooking shows’ using the recipes and instructions we had written for some truly ‘Marvellous Medicines’!

History In the Autumn we visited the SS Great Britain as part of our Brunel topic.

We loved dressing up and finding out about life on board. In the Spring Term, the Castle Week medieval feast was a huge success. Hosted

by Lord Gabriel and Lady Anna, we had food, entertainment and a few young squires were knighted. Year 2 demonstrated super learning by naming all the features when we visited Chepstow Castle and acting out a castle siege. This Summer, The Great Fire of London week was packed with drama, singing, dancing and…. Avon Fire Brigade!

Year 2 Miss Gooch and Jackie would like to thank all the children in Year 2 for an amazing year of fun and learning. Our class bear (named Muffin by the children) would like to thank them all for a wonderful year of adventures too, including a coronation!

Lower School Christmas Play – Baaarmy Bethlehem Anna, Adaline and Archie didn’t need much encouragement to get into character as three cheeky sheep looking for a party. All of Year 2 performed brilliantly and helped to look after and encourage the younger children. Bravo!

Maths We have really got ‘hands on’ in Maths this year and Year 2 have proved to be super mathematical detectives. Whether it was investigating number, shapes, angles, data, f r a c t i o n s , length, weight, or capacity, they have immersed themselves in all of it.

English It has been another very busy year in the English Department for Year 2. The children have written poems, stories, fact sheets, letters to penpals and chocolate companies, diaries, and instructions, as well as writing and delivering their own

Geography We learned about the traditions, saints, legends, and landmarks of the four nations that make up the UK in Autumn, before we went around the world with Buddy Bee in Spring. During field work to map our local area, Year 2 showed what keen eyes they have. Luckily, they also read the compass accurately, so we didn’t lose our way.

Science In the Autumn we investigated changing materials and sadly several gingerbread men were harmed during our waterproof and absorbency experiments. Year 2 wowed us with their habitat boxes in the Spring and we had a great time exploring the different habitats in our school grounds. We visited The Wild Place to learn all about animals in different habitats around the world.

What a fabulous and busy year it has been in Year 3. There have been many enjoyable and interactive topics which have enthused and engaged the children.

During the first week we adopted our pets.

Mrs Greenbank’s class chose Max, a leopard.

Mrs Glanville’s class welcomed Spots the cheetah. They all enjoyed taking their pet home for a weekend and sharing the fun they had with the rest of the class.

The Autumn Term started off with our exciting Ancient Greece and Field Study topics, in Humanities. During these topics the children completed detailed written work and took part in practical activities to learn all about life and the Gods in Ancient Greece.

The studying of artefacts was fun to find out how we can use them to learn about the past. In the Field Study the children enjoyed learning more about a country and then presenting it to their peers. In Maths, our focus was on developing our place value knowledge, consolidating number facts and learning about the four operations. Many enjoyed tackling some Maths investigations which really made us think. We worked hard learning our multiplication facts using a wide range of online resources and practical activities.

YEAR 3

Our English was a book study of the Hodgeheg by Dick King Smith, where the children created some superb and detailed newspaper reports, effective storyboards and went on to create their own descriptive writing about a hedgehog they created from clay. During their Drama lessons they filmed a news broadcast about Max the hedgehog’s road accident. Outside the classroom, the children participated in an exciting art day at Bristol Museum. They took part in Happiness Day, a trip to Bristol Hippodrome for a pantomime, the Christmas Fayre and many successful sports fixtures!

In our History topic we studied the History of Britain, beginning with the Celts and then the Romans arrival. Some highlights were the fabulous trip to Caerleon to see Roman remains and experience what life would have been like in a Roman barracks.

Next came the Roman banquet where ‘peacock’s brains’ and ‘dormice’ were on the menu, washed down with a glass of ‘wine’. This was followed by Roman army training and learning how to respond to Latin commands. In Geography our topic was Kenya. We compared everyday life in Kenya to our lives in Tockington.

In the Spring Term, during our English lessons, we wrote our own quest myth after studying a variety of myths from different cultures. Maths took us

We investigated the different houses that people live in and what food they eat. We couldn’t study Kenya without looking at tourism and the allimportant safari. This term also saw exciting things happening outside the classroom with World Book Day and the Spring music concert.

The Summer Term was very busy with learning choreography and lines for the Year 3 and 4 Shakespeare Festival. The hard work definitely paid off as the production was a real success. In Geography our topic was ‘Rainforests’ where we learned all about the layers of a rainforest, the animals and plants that live there and we even had a food tasting session trying the different foods we can find in the rainforest.

In History we continued our journey through British History and investigated the Anglo Saxons and Vikings. We designed our own 3D villages and studied the Bayeux Tapestry. With the Vikings we

learned all about the warriors and Kings, made Viking shields, and finished the topic with an intense Viking Invasion in the Rose Garden which involved a longship and water pistols! In English we studied a text called ‘Leon and the Place Between’ which brought magic to life through the adventures of the main character, Leon.

In Maths we kept busy with our Geometry topic, including 2D and 3D shapes and their nets, exploring angles and measuring. We took the Maths outside and investigated the different angles in nature. Outside the classroom, Year 3 children took responsibility for their stall at Family Fun Day and really enjoyed taking part in their very first House Athletics Finals.

It has been so lovely to watch Year 3 develop and progress during the year.

They are a brilliant group of children who throw themselves into everything that the school has to offer, whether it is the varied

music lessons and sporting activities or class assemblies, triathlons and collaboratively dressing up as Dalmations on Disney Day! They will thrive in Year 4 and we wish them all the best!

YEAR 4 It has been such a busy and funpacked year for both Year 4 classes!

Together they have thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the curriculum and have produced fantastic work all year round! There have been many fun and hands-on topics which have brought our learning to life. Here are some of our best highlights of the year: The Autumn term kicked off with our exciting humanities topics: the Ancient Egyptians in History, and India as our Geography focus.

Both classes produced amazing written work, as well as some mummification of fruit and designing and creating our own cartouches. We also took part in a workshop to handle and understand Indian artefacts.

The mummification did not go so well unfortunately… We are not convinced the fruit had preserved - the classes were very smelly! Alongside this, we had a trip to Bristol Museum to gain a more in-depth understanding of how the Ancient Egyptians lived.

In our Maths lessons, we focused on consolidating our number facts, involving the four operations, learning new methods for multiplication and division, and we often finished the week off with fun Maths games! Our English work focused on non-chronological reports, where the children created some superb and detailed Pyramid fact files. They also enjoyed learning about the pyramids so much that we had some PowerPoint fact files brought in from home! The craziness continued outside of the classroom

The Summer Term always seems to pass us by quickly and this year was no exception. The classes had been looking forward to learning about the gruesome Aztecs and they were not disappointed. We kept the Aztec Gods happy by sacrificing Mr Symonds at the beginning of our feast and we had the opportunity to sample new and different foods.

The Spring term arrived in a flash and we were straight back into hard work! We kicked off our History topic learning all about World Explorers and their adventures, which both classes thoroughly enjoyed, particularly learning about how these explorers have impacted history and our current society. Our Geography work took us exploring in the local area where we learnt about map skills, OS map symbols and how to read coordinates on a map.

Creativity was key for our English unit as we studied ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. The children’s writing really blossomed, particularly their own creations of a new medicine which took us by surprise! In Maths, TH E TO C K INGTONI AN

Geography we studied our European neighbours and learnt about capital cities, landmarks, monuments and cultures in all European countries.

The children then picked a European country from a hat and were given a deadline to study and prepare a PowerPoint that was presented to the class. We must say Year 4, these were OUTSTANDING!

YEAR 5 Year 5 has had an exceptional year, marked by remarkable growth and adaptability. It has been a delight to welcome students into Form each morning - they all arrive with a smile on their face and are ready to start the day. The students have found immense pleasure in reading during morning Form Time and it has been a great way of setting the tone for the day.

Undoubtedly, one of the highlights for many students was their involvement in the production of Peter Pan, where their enthusiasm soared as they played pirates - they loved dressing up in their costumes and getting their face painted. We are sure they will be fantastic in their Year 6 play.

Attending the Hippodrome for the Pantomime proved to be yet another cherished memory for the students.

They thoroughly enjoyed the enchanting performance of Cinderella and the interval ice cream.

In the new year, the students were enthralled by the Young Shakespeare Company's captivating

performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream. It was a very interactive play and many of the year group took an active part - Emma F delivered an outstanding portrayal of Hippolyta while Sirivaana and Connie shone as Helena and Hermia. Harry's portrayal of the King left a lasting impression.

Year 5 will be pleased to know the company is returning in the new year!

Emma S and Amal organised a fantastic Harry Potter competition, which received tremendous enthusiasm from the school. Students were challenged to create their own magical beast, with Sophia emerging as the winner of the overall prizes.

The pair organised themselves very professionally!

In the House Talent Show, Emma F represented Cunningham, Nitsa showcased her piano skills for Churchill, as did Amal for Cunningham, and Avneet and Sienna mesmerised with their dance performance for Alexander. It was a brilliant show enjoyed by all but Churchill was the overall winner of the show!

We had many Minnie Mouses and Star Wars characters. Some of our favourites were Rupert dressed up as Mrs Doubtfire, Gilby as Elsa from Frozen, and George C as Maui! We can’t wait to see what everyone will dress up as next year.

During Activity Week, the visit from Aardman Studios was received well by all, as was the annual Lido trip.

Year 6 have had a fun-filled year, with their highlight being the play ‘Peter Pan’. Everyone played a part and it was incredible to see their effort rewarded with two magnificent shows. It has been a year where they have had more expected of them and as a result have grown in maturity and flourished.

A big thanks to Alex FW and Jackson for securing the school a table tennis table, which has brought the Upper School children lots of joy at

breaktimes. It also seemed fitting to use this as one of the Year 6 stalls on Family Fun Day. This went down a treat and everyone had lots of fun, raising lots of money for charity too.

It’s fair to say that we’re quite a sporty year group as well! We’ve broken two school records this year and had representatives at the Athletics championship in July. Many Year 6s have represented the school in Maths challenges or general knowledge quizzes and had fun doing it.

Our Year 7s bounced into the new school year full of enthusiasm! They were ready to learn and excited for what Year 7 would bring. They quickly adapted to new routines and the higher expectations put on the older year groups of the school. In September, Mr Symonds ran a Study Skills morning to give them some pointers on how they could prepare themselves well for examinations, and what would be expected of them academically in the year ahead. Later in the month, they put their problemsolving skills to good use during a night away at the Year 7 Leadership Camp. This also helped to develop their teamwork and communication.

When it was Year 8’s turn to go away to Stackpole, Year 7 did an excellent job of managing the school. Stepping up to the Senior Cross Country course was also a new challenge for the pupils but they all embraced it with true Tockington spirit. As always, the Autumn term was filled with many highlights that Year 7 particularly enjoyed, including bonfire night, the Christmas fayre and Carol Service.

YEAR 7

In the Spring Term, Year 7 were fortunate to have a revision skills workshop with Mr Gavin Turner which they found most useful in the lead up to their summer examinations.

Their Geography project was a consumer inquiry into the Mall at Cribbs Causeway. Year 7 continued to enjoy their sporting experiences as they changed from hockey and rugby to netball and football. They took on leadership roles within their teams and enjoyed success in their respective arenas.

They then moved on to the end-of-term production of “Alice in Wonderland”, assisting with the production of scenery, lighting and costumes as well as taking roles on stage. Sports continued to play a major role in life in Year 7 with the pupils competing in the House Long Ball, Swimming Gala and House Athletics Finals. Speech Day rounded off a successful year with great energy and excitement.

As Summer began to warm up the school, Year 7 enjoyed an actionpacked term. They hosted the tree climbing stall at Family Fun Day, which was a firm crowd favourite. The following week, Year 7 travelled away to their Senior Camp at Biblins in the Wye Valley, where they participated in a wide range of activities including raft building, caving and abseiling.

YEAR 8 which everyone did very well in, even some Top Tens! In House cross country, Churchill were victorious but every House did very well and it was a close competition.

At the very start of the Academic Year, we were awarded our monitor roles ready for the year ahead. In Games, we had very strong hockey and rugby teams with lots of victories. Alexander won the House Hockey and Churchill won the House Rugby. All of us really enjoyed the House Talent, which showed Churchill as the triumphant House but there were lots of great performances all round. This year also saw lots of very good debates from the Year 8s in the Debating Club run by Mr Symonds.

We had lots of fun undertaking our Geography Field Study at Freshwater West on a week-long camp in Stackpole. The Autumn Term had lots of cross country involving the Gloucestershire League, with plenty of podium places for different ages.

Bonfire Night was a resounding success and we all enjoyed meeting up with former pupils. We also had great fun at the Christmas Fayre thanks to FOTM and we all loved being elves for Father Christmas! The year finished with an amazing and funfilled day out to see the pantomime at the Bristol Hippodrome. This year’s show was Cinderella and everyone had a good laugh!

Participating in CREST Day was very interesting and we discovered and made new things. The week after half term, where we had done some serious revision, we had our mocks, which were difficult but useful. At the end of each term, we had our usual competitions: Cartography, Ornithology and Handwriting.

As everyone knows, cross country is a very big part of Tockington life and this term was no exception. Cross country happened every week, with everyone beating their personal bests, which was great. Certain people from Year 8 made it to the National Prep Schools Cross Country Finals at Malvern,

During Spring Term, we had many sporting events and some excellent results.

This included netball, football, cross country and swimming.

Everyone had an amazing term in netball and football with many victories, ending with a well-deserved and very fun netball trip that lots of people went to watch (with a very exciting final score of 41-42 to Bath!)

During this term, we had a trip to Planet Ice at Cribbs Causeway to watch an ice hockey game. We had a tour of the changing rooms and met a few of the Pitbull ice hockey players.

It was a very good game to watch and we had a great time.

As we started the final term in the Summer, we looked forward to the events and activities that lay ahead.

We kicked off the term with the Junior Maths Challenge and Debating Society meetings. After that, some of our students entered the Schools

Triathlon at Clifton College for the charity Restless Development. We then played House cricket on the bottom field the following Saturday which was won by Cunningham. Our cricket matches continued all season, with the final match being played at

Clifton College. The Year 8s also enjoyed a special art trip into Bristol and got to try some first-hand street art using spray paints.

PERFORMING ARTS Drama has truly been an extraordinary experience this year, leaving an indelible mark on both the talented performers and the entire school community. From the theatrics of Shakespeare in Year 3 and 4 to the magic of Peter Pan in Year 5 and 6 and the fantasy of Year 7 & 8's Alice in Wonderland, the children have made some wonderful memories and given some excellent performances in this year's productions.

Year 3 and 4 Shakespeare Festival Years 3 and 4 trod the boards and performed the words of the Immortal Bard once again, this year focusing on his tragedies. The Year 3 classes joined together to present Hamlet whilst Year 4ES performed Romeo and Juliet and Year 4EC enacted Macbeth. All three performances were excellent with the children taking on their roles with dedication and commitment. To bring a little light-heartedness to the seriousness that is Shakespeare’s tragedies, Year 4EC recorded interludes with William Shakespeare himself! After a successful dress rehearsal and two fun-filled evening productions Years 3 and 4 deserve to feel very proud of themselves and their fantastic performances.

Year 5 and 6 Peter Pan The year commenced with an exhilarating production of Peter Pan, brought to life by the enthusiastic students of Years 5 and 6. Chosen with great care and co-directed by Mrs Sapkota and Mrs Aldridge, this captivating play ignited the imaginations of the pupils and perfectly complemented their year groups. It was inspiring to witness the rapid mastery of lines by the children.

The plot followed the beloved adventures of the Darling family:

Wendy, John, and Michael, as they embarked on a magical journey to Neverland with Peter Pan and Tinker Bell. Along the way, they met unforgettable characters such as Tiger Lily and her Brave Girls, the mischievous Lost Boys, the villainous Captain Hook, Smee, and the band of pirates. Ultimately, they returned home to their parents, accompanied by the Lost Boys.

The performance delivered by the Year 6s was brilliant and the energy brought forth by the Year 5s was truly electrifying, especially during the musical numbers. Mrs

Mockridge did a fantastic job of organising and creating costumes, staging, and props. Miss Green, alongside Imogen and Oscar from Year 7, did outstanding visual effects for the play, which was only possible through the funds raised

by Friends of TMS. The entire school community, as well as the parents attending the two nights of performances, were enthralled by this wonderful show. Congratulations to all those involved in creating such a remarkable production.

Year 7 and 8 Alice in Wonderland The journey into Alice in Wonderland was an exhilarating whirlwind right from the start. The fun began on World Book Day, when students had to guess their chosen play by deciphering clues. Mr Symonds was brilliantly dressed as the Mad Hatter and the whole school was treated to a whimsical Mad Hatter's Tea Party for lunch.

It was during the penultimate week that the year groups finally got to start rehearsing.

Professional director and composer, David Hewson from The Tobacco Factory Theatre, directed the students and brought the play to life, under the guidance of Mrs Aldridge. The pupils immediately connected with David's infectious energy and responded incredibly well to his guidance. Adding to the enchantment, Mrs Sapkota adapted and composed all the music for the play. She, along with the immensely talented Theadora and Charlie from Year 7, recorded the musical soundtrack.

The dedicated backstage crew faced the daunting task of seamlessly transitioning numerous scenes and props, and they rose to the challenge brilliantly. The visual effects team (under Miss Green) deserves immense recognition for their role in bringing the play to life, further enhancing its enchantment and wonder. Mrs Mockridge did another fantastic job at getting the costumes in order, especially Humpty Dumpty’s and creating a wonderful range of props, from a floating river to a magical mirror.

The play was met with resounding applause from the school and parents, provoking endless laughter and joy.

It was a truly special way for the Year 8s to end their time at Tockington.

MUSIC The Music Department has had a particularly busy year. As well as the normal plethora of musical events throughout the year, we have taken on new peripatetic staff and consequently are offering more musical activities and clubs than ever before. In addition to this Miss Tabatha Moreton joined our team and has assumed responsibility for the development of Music Technology.

From September 2023 I am looking forward to restarting the orchestra with a group of around 22 pupils between Grade 1 and Grade 5 standard and we have other plans to increase music ensembles even more. Throughout the year we have regularly held Talent Spots and Informal Concerts, which prove to be an invaluable way to build confidence and encourage children to perform. Talent Spots are

particularly relaxed and children can opt in or opt out on the day.

Lunchtime Informal concerts are still very popular and parents and pupils are encouraged to come and support their friends.

Autumn Term

was won by Cunningham (Wilf) for fantastic delivery of an advanced song proving great vocal range. Round 3 Variety Act was won by Alexander (Avneet and Sienna’s dance) for an emotional performance with great synchronisation and creative choreography. Round 4 is Grade 4+ and was won by Dudu, Year 4 from Churchill. Round 5 - the Wildcard was won by Churchill (Violin Trio) for great composure on stage and a natural sense of timing between the three performers.

(Sia). It was a tough decision but finally the adjudicator decided that it should be won by Churchill for great volume and dancing. Thank you to Owen Parsons for giving up his time to come and adjudicate for us.

The Harvest Service flowed well with the Lower School Choir performing ‘In My Trolley’, Junior Choir singing ‘Everywhere Around Me’ and Performance Choir singing ‘Harvest of Love’. The whole school enjoyed the Harvest Samba as usual.

After half term, House Talent was led extremely well by the Year 8s and supported by the Year 7s when they were away at Stackpole. We have several rounds, each with a different focus. They are judged on levels of demand, technical control and expression and interpretation.

As usual points were neck and neck and it all boiled down to the House Song round. Year 8s had selected good songs and organised lunchtime rehearsals for several weeks.

This year for the first time we had performances at the Christmas Fayre. It was a delightful opportunity in a relaxed environment for parents to have a chance to see their child perform. We had an array of ages and instruments including recorder, violin, piano, singing and our classical guitar ensemble. Thank you so much to everyone involved in organising this.

This year’s Carol Service was a lovely team event where the choirs sang beautifully and the confident readings were most impressive.

Being greeted by some excellent bell ringing at 1pm by William (Year 8) and the St Mary’s Bell Ringing Group was a wonderful addition. Isaac K and Elsie L sang the Once in Royal David’s City solo together for added strength and did very well. Junior Choir sang Carol of the Drum with Max A playing the drum and Starry Night which is one of my favourite carols. The Performance Choir sang Holy Night with full harmony and managed the build-up and the top notes extremely well. In contrast towards the beginning of the service they sang ‘Mary’s Boy Child’ which is fun and syncopated. Overall, it was a lovely way to end the Christmas Term.

Spring Term An undoubted highlight this year has to be the Year 5 and 6 performance of Peter Pan. Those of you who were able to attend one of the performances will, I am sure, join me in congratulating both the children and the staff for putting on such a tremendous production. Thank you so much again to FOTM for the new lights and projector in the Hall which have already been put to good use. Well done to the main cast of Year 6 pupils who really progressed and developed through the rehearsal process. The Year 5s were also a pleasure to work with in class and learned the dances well, working very cohesively indeed.

In March, Performance Choir ventured to Dean Close for a day of singing with five other schools from Gloucestershire. The timetable for the day promised a great deal of delicious refreshments which kept the children relaxed and energised. The first session went incredibly quickly working on three songs, the latter in great detail. Pupils had to be alert and concentrate well to make the details in the music come out. During the choral workshop after lunch Tim McVittie did an original and rhythmic arrangement of 'Oh When the Saints' where he divided children into four groups. Again, this re-energised the pupils as it was a more light-hearted genre where pupils were encouraged to sing out with great enthusiasm. Finally, we witnessed Dean Close Chapel Choir singing and they sounded stunning. The whole day was enjoyed by all and the children were beautifully well-behaved and a real credit to our school. Thank you to Mr Glanville and Miss Fox for driving and to all the parents who managed to come and watch the service.

I was very proud of all three of our

choirs and their performance at the Eisteddfod Festival. The Lower School Choir kicked off by singing Teddy Bear Rock and Roll followed by a beautiful rendition of Listen to the River. They were awarded 89 and took the cup.

The Junior Choir followed with 89 for We Want to Sing and a fast, energetic performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - and narrowly missed taking the cup. The more mature Performance Choir blended their voices well in their tricky songs - Breaking Free and We Sing Gloria and were awarded a Distinction. Well done and thank you to all the members of the choir who give so much.

Evie P won the Traditional and Classical vocal categories in her age group, taking the cup for the overall best vocal performance of the morning for her classical song Earth, Sea and Sky. Isabella H and Emma VP competed very well in the vocal categories and achieved excellent results. Amal and Teddy secured a Distinction in their piano classes being placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. I would like to thank our peripatetic teachers and Sian Walters for entering the soloists.

we held the Annual Concert. This comprised a variety of acts from solos through to classical ensemble groups, rock groups and both the Junior and Performance Choir. It was a real team event and I was very pleased with the standard of performances.

All pupils demonstrated a high level of discipline, musicianship and perseverance. Georgina Dadson led Guitar Ensemble who had excellent intonation and sense of ensemble delivering very accurate harmonies.

Tom McCluskey and Jess Townsend produced a very professional piece with String Ensemble in just three weeks! Thanks go to Sian Walters for teaching Charlie R Clocks from Coldplay! Charlie, you inspired the masses! The two bands performing Coldplay’s Clocks and Eye of the Tiger

by Survivor, under direction of Miss Moreton, were inspirational with their accuracy of timing and commitment to their instruments. The Recorder Group played beautifully and stayed together well with a tricky piece - after just ten lessons! Both Junior and Performance Choir performed with accuracy of diction, rhythm and great attention to dynamic range.

In 2023 Gloria D participated in the Thornbury Eisteddfod, being awarded Distinction in contemporary piano, and also gave a public performance in support of Thornbury United Reformed Church. Gloria will be part of our Pathway Programme Music Strand next year.

Katherine Denny and Sophie KirkHarris provided an array of solos from beginner flute, clarinet and saxophone through to singers and pianists. Emily B absolutely stunned us with her passion, communicating an extremely advanced maturity of feeling at such a young age.

Summer Term The Lower School concert was a wonderful affair. The children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 never cease to amaze me with their confidence to stand up and announce what they will play. They supported each other very well, sitting still while others performed and behaved impeccably throughout the heat. We heard a variety of performances from beginners to more advanced - even some at Grade 1 level.

It is clear that some children are having a lot of support with practice at home which is wonderful so thank you. Every single child performed in a class performance, combining singing and percussion, and performing several parts at the same time - this is known as ensemble playing. This requires great concentration, listening skills and awareness of self and others.

We all enjoyed the afternoon very much.

I had my work cut out on Family Fun Day! We provided a very busy schedule of half-hourly performances and the hardest thing is getting the children to stay in the same place ready to perform! However, our ensembles grabbed the extra chance to perform and show everyone what they had learned this term. String Ensemble, Guitar Group, all three choirs combined as one in threepart harmony, and both bands played. Thank you to Miss Moreton, Mr Sherwood, Ms Townsend, Mr McCluskey and Miss Dadson for giving up your time to provide this entertainment.

This year for the first time I was asked to create all the music for this - a challenge I really enjoyed as I love composing music. Thea S and Charlie R were asked to learn and record the violin and piano parts respectively.

I was bowled over by both children - their attitude and approach to recording was calm and professional, even though it was the first time they had done anything like this.

ART & DESIGN

The Art Department has continued to flourish this year with many exciting new projects. Topics have ranged from Famous Buildings and Fish to People in Action, Picasso and Pop Art. The pupils have also enjoyed a number of fantastic Design & Technology projects, making stockings, pencil cases and puppets, moving monsters, investigating space engineering, making storybooks and slippers.

For Christmas, all the children in the school designed a wonderful array of Christmas cards as a fund-raiser and raised over £600 for the Art Department.

Saturday school STEM sessions have given the children the opportunity to investigate gears and pulleys, build tall structures with spaghetti and create brush monsters with motors.

In November, Year 6 created artwork for the Mary Fedden Competition at Badminton School. This year the theme was “Menagerie”. Well done to Lucas, Bertie, Leila Belle, Dorian, Oscar B and Hugo who made it through to the final. Oscar B received a Commended award and Hugo received a Highly Commended and won overall for TMS – well done all.

Year 3 took a trip to Bristol Museum where they created a personal ‘arts log’ in the form of a sketchbook to provide evidence of their research into different artwork, their art discoveries and ideas for their artwork. They then created their own piece of artwork inspired by their experiences. Following on from their investigations at the museum, they achieved a Discover Arts Award. The Discover Arts Award is certified by Trinity College London and is the first in a series of Arts awards that can be achieved. As well as developing their TH E TOC KI NGTONI A N

In the Spring the focus was on the musical, Peter Pan. The Art department was once again busy constructing and painting a variety of props and backdrops for the play.

A special well done goes to William C who designed and made a superb crocodile head. We were also delighted to learn that William had won an Art Scholarship alongside his Drama and Academic scholarships to Westonbirt School. William has produced some superb pieces of three-dimensional work and I would like to congratulate him on his achievements.

There have been some superb photography entries this year. Well done to Katie W, and Jasper B for their winning entries and a special Congratulations to Charlie R who won the Jamie Smith Photography cup at the end of the year.

Overall, it has been a fantastic year.

Now it is time to turn our attention to the year ahead and generate new ideas for the future. Watch this space!

Prizes this year were won by Oscar B who won the Richardson prize for Art, Jack S who won the School Art Prize and Maisie who won the Elaine Thomas Art prize as well as William C who was awarded the end of year DT prize. Well done to all!

In the Summer term, we celebrated the King’s Coronation and to commemorate this the whole school collaborated to produce a beautiful piece of Artwork to be displayed in the Main school.

During Activity week the pupils had a visit from the well-known animation studio, Aardman. The children had great fun learning how to make their own models of Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Feathers the Penguin.

They followed this by producing some amazing stop motion animation films in the Art room.

ENGLISH Firstly, I would like to say what a fantastic year I have had! All of the staff and students have been so welcoming and supportive; it has been a pleasure to teach English to such engaged and enthusiastic children.

When I look back on the year, I cannot believe how much we have achieved in English. Years 5 to 8 have studied a wide range of texts and genres in order to gradually prepare them for their Senior Schools and GCSEs. To foster links and continuity, each year group has had a different theme.

Poetry and Performance is one area that has particularly stood out for me this school is brimming with poets and performers.

Year 5 have had a brilliant year, engaging with literature through the theme of Other Worlds. During the Autumn term, students read and discussed The Fastest Boy in the World by Elizabeth Laird and they used this text to inspire their own writing. In the Spring, pupils studied The Tempest by Shakespeare and created a poetry anthology inspired

by Nature.

The Summer term’s topic was Fairy Tales, and the class thought about the history of stories and how they were told in the past. We also looked at fairy tales from many eras and authors, including stories by the Grimm Brothers and Roald Dahl.

Pupils then applied this knowledge to debate whether traditional fairy tales are still relevant today.

Year 6 has had a very successful year in both English and Drama. It began with the theme of Journeys, with the students studying The River Sea

by Eva Ibbotson and Travel Writing.

Students produced their own piece of travel writing inspired by their own journeys around the world. In Spring, students explored and analysed Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which led to the writing of their own poetry anthology about magic. The year concluded with the study of Ancient Greek Literature, concentrating on how stories were shared and recorded, mythology and the Art of Rhetoric.

Year 7 began with the study of Detective Fiction, a genre found in many of the GCSE English texts.

Students were challenged to deduce like Sherlock Holmes and write like Dr Watson. The Spring term included the study of Much Ado About Nothing, one of Shakespeare’s funniest comedies, as well as the study of Relationship Poetry. The Dystopian genre was explored in the Summer term and used to prepare students for their CE style exams. Results from the exams were very impressive.

Year 8 have been a joy to teach.

They worked so hard all year and performed so well in their Common Entrance Exams. We started the year with Gothic Literature, which all of the students thoroughly enjoyed.

The Spring term was spent studying the difficult drama, King Lear and

poetry. This play is frequently studied at A-Level and the students did an excellent job at grasping the essential ideas of the play. I wish Year 8 the best of luck for the future!

Theatre

World Book Day

We were fortunate to have two theatre groups visit the school this year. The first was M&M Productions, who performed Beauty and the Beast to Lower School and Owls. Everyone really enjoyed the performance and I am pleased to say that the company will be visiting TMS again next Christmas.

This year's Day was not only a celebration of reading, but it also included clues for Year 7 and 8 students to identify what play they would be performing at the conclusion of the year. The first hint came before they even entered the school: Mr Symonds dressed as The Mad Hatter!

Upper School had a fantastic time attending the Hippodrome just before Christmas to see Cinderella which was full of magic and the usual giggles. The pupils’ behaviour was outstanding.

The Young Shakespeare Company, who specialises in performing to younger audiences, paid a visit to Years 2-8. The company performed A Midsummer Night's Dream and it was full of audience participation, fabulous fairies, romancing Royalty and star crossed lovers.

Everyone had a great time and the performers were blown away by the students' enthusiasm! We are delighted that the company will be returning to us in the new academic year to perform Henry V.

Totally Tockington The school magazine had a successful year. We had so many fledgling journalists wanting to contribute at the start of the year that we had to divide them into two groups: 'Totally' and 'Tockington', which were both organised by the editorial team.

Thank you to the Editor-in-Chief, Amelia, who was born for this job and has demonstrated exceptional maturity and organisational skills.

The day began with an exciting assembly - the children were a sea of colour in their fantastic costumes.

Each form demonstrated their literature-inspired attire and the teachers even joined in and danced on stage. The care put into the costumes simply blew me away.

The Year 8 students designed some excellent World Book Day activities for Year 2. These tasks included creating a dinner menu for the character they were dressed up as, acting out a job interview for a new TMS teacher, and writing a tongue twister using broken books.

A special Mad Hatter’s Tea Party was the second clue of the day. The dining hall was decorated with bunting and balloons and party food was on the menu.Everyone had a wonderful time!

From the Library The library has been abuzz with activity throughout the year, hosting a multitude of children engaging in various activities.

Our well-loved ‘Milkshake Mondays’ have continued this year and children from every Year group across the school have been able to visit the library at break time to hear a story, take part in a reading activity and have a snack. We have loved finding rhyming words in stories, exploring mixed-up fairy tales, and taking part in book scavenger hunts and quizzes!

Harrisons Catering have been amazing at supporting us with their delicious milkshakes and biscuits and we thank them for their hard work.

Accelerated Reader continues to be well-used in school and serves as a driving force in cultivating and nurturing strong reading habits among our children from Years 2 to 8. We were delighted to celebrate a record-breaking 39 children at our final Millionaires' Tea Party this year, witnessing a significant rise in the number of children achieving their Word Count milestones.

The library has hosted the Year 3 and 4 Book Club and KS2 Poetry Club this year. Our Book Club has been wellattended, and children have enjoyed exploring a range of stories including Varjak Paw, The Iron Man, Diary of a Killer Cat and Esio Trot. Poetry Club took part enthusiastically in the Young Writers Monster Poetry Competition

this year and children enjoyed exploring a range of poetry and creating their own monster poems.

They were so well received that we had the exciting news in July that all submitted pieces have been selected to be published in the collection “Monster Poetry – Creepy Creations” – well done Book Club!

Readathon We successfully raised £750 for the ‘Read for Good’ Charity. Thank you to everyone who helped and donated. The funds received will be used to provide books for young people in hospitals to enjoy and read.

The library continues to thrive, thanks to generous donations from parents as well as the acquisition of new books through the rewards earned from our successful Book Fair held in March.

A special thank you goes to our wonderful parent volunteers who selflessly dedicate their time to assist children in the library at lunchtimes.

Our Science department has recently undergone a review, encompassing both curriculum and teaching methodologies. We constantly strive to improve the learning experience for our students and are dedicated to providing high-quality education.

As such, we have identified different skills and attributes that we would like to develop in the pupils alongside the knowledge already required in the curriculum.

SCIENCE

One of the highlights of the year has been our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) day where the theme was Space. This cross-curricular approach enabled students to make connections between different subjects and develop critical skills in problem-solving and innovation.

By fostering a collaborative learning environment, our aim is to prepare our students for the challenges of the future, where cross-disciplinary knowledge is key.

In addition to the STEAM day, the older pupils have actively participated in the CREST Awards program. This program aims to recognise and reward students' achievements in scientific research and project work. CREST Awards have given our students

the opportunity to showcase their scientific skills and be acknowledged for their contributions. The program is run by the British Science Association and has been very successful over the last few years. We plan to build on this even more next year as we believe it is a great opportunity for the children to demonstrate the skills they are developing alongside the knowledge they have gained.

MATHEMATICS Counting Cubs

This year has seen our Maths Department grow!

We welcomed Mrs Byrne into teaching Year 5 and 6 Maths and she has done a fantastic job, using lots of new resources to inspire and engage our learners.

A new scheme of work teaching Maths for Mastery has been successfully introduced across the school from Reception to Year 6, encouraging the children to develop a deep, longterm, and adaptable understanding of Maths.

As with last year, we entered many of our students into national competitions to give them the opportunity to practice their problem-solving, demonstrate their ability and enjoy Mathematics.

Students in Years 5 and 6 are entered into the Primary Maths Challenge while pupils in Years 7 and 8 take part in the Junior Maths Challenge, run by the UKMT. In both, the questions are challenging and encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. Although the questions are multiple choice, they are designed to make students think, rather than guess. Well done to all students on their achievements, and particularly to those who won awards.

This all-new aspect of the Year 7 and 8’s leadership programme has been running all year and has proven very popular.

Every member of Year 7 and 8 has successfully planned and led Maths activities to the Owls, demonstrating excellent communication skills and getting the Nursery children learning more Maths through play. The Owls love meeting and playing with the older children and the Year 7s and 8s always leave with a big smile, feeling a great sense of achievement and enjoyment.

Some of the activities and games we’ve played include giant dice rolling, singing number songs, shape hunts, matching games and more!

MAT group The More Able and Talented Maths group began this school year with the National Cipher Challenge from the University of Southampton.

Our growing MAT group gave this challenge a very good go before their age ruled them out of future rounds. Well done on getting as far as you did through ‘The Empty Vault’.

We have also looked at some pretty complicated Additional level algebra in depth and had a solution to a Problem Solving question published on www.nrich.maths.org.

Common Entrance This year has seen an incredible set of results, thanks to the sheer determination of the Year 8 cohort.

They have given the last two years their all and have been an outstanding class to teach. I am so proud of their endurance and hard work, and many of them have very bright futures in Mathematics ahead.

Next Year Next year we will continue a focus on Problem Solving, equipping our young learners with essential skills for life. There are already several exciting competitions planned and we aim to involve as many children as possible in these. Lessons and practical activities will take place in and out of the classroom to complement our scheme of work, always with the emphasis on fun to create a new generation of bright and engaged mathematicians.

Maths Challenge days Year 4 Maths Challenge – Redmaids’ Four very talented mathematicians from Year 4 were selected to represent the school against 20 other schools at Redmaids' High Junior School. Bella H worked with Dudu, and Aryansham worked with Anthony on fast-paced round-robin challenges including making a number, solving broken calculator problems, and challenges with dominoes. Altogether they made an incredibly strong team, they worked hard and had so much fun taking part.

Year 5 Maths Challenge – BGS An energetic team of four Year 5s travelled to BGS in January to compete in a Maths Challenge against over 40 other pairs from local schools. Sirivaana V paired with Leon F, and George C with Joseph L took on the challenge, rotating around the room and, under time pressure, put their heads together to solve Maths problems. They worked incredibly hard and had lots of fun.

Year 5 & 6 Maths Challenge – Cheltenham College We were invited to Cheltenham College again this year to participate in the Primary Maths Challenge run

by UKMT. It was a fantastically wellrun event composed of four rounds spread over the day. Representing Year 5 was Oliver, Kieran, Ruby and Nitsa, and representing Year 6 was Bertie, Alex, Simar and Gloria. They were competing against other teams in their Year group from all over the country. The first round was a group round where they had 15 questions to answer between them in 40 minutes.

They all found that time goes really fast when you're getting stuck in! Other rounds included 'Make a number' task (similar to Countdown), shuttle round and a relay race.

Year 6 Maths Challenge – Clifton College In a similar fashion to the Cheltenham College event, another group of four Year 6s took part in the Primary Maths Challenge run by UKMT. Hugo, Basil, Oscar B and Lucas began with the group round, followed by the crossnumber. This is similar to a crossword but each square must contain a digit, according to a numerical clue. After lunch there were two other rounds: the shuttle, which relies on the other pair to pass you the correct answer; and the relay.

This challenge was to complete as many correct questions as possible in 40 minutes, alternating questions in pairs.

Well done to all those who represented TMS in Mathematics this year for such a fantastic effort and for their exemplary attitude.

GEOGRAPHY Year 8 Geography Fieldwork trip to Stackpole, Pembrokeshire Year 8 had a fantastic trip away to Stackpole, Pembrokeshire, to carry out their Geography Fieldwork study on the Sand Dunes. We were met by stunning weather at Freshwater West to carry out our study which involved collecting data on the slope angle, calculating the proportion of Marram Grass, Bare Ground and Other Plant Species inside a quadrat, and counting the variety of plant species.

The pupils worked hard every evening, creating a profile, bar graphs and pie charts, as well as completing a methodology and conclusion.

Other activities included stargazing on the Eight Arch Bridge, a long coastal walk from FreshWater East to the Stackpole Centre, creating sand sculptures, surfing, coasteering, visiting the Green Bridge of Wales and exploring St Govan’s Chapel. During the trip, we were fortunate enough to see otters, seals, greater horseshoe bats, kingfishers, cormorants, herons, a stonechat as well as a variety of Flora.

Cartography Competition Results What difficult competitions to judge this academic year! The quality of the entries goes from strength to strength with the attention to detail, scale and artistic additions so impressive to see.

Year 6 Geography Fieldwork trip to the Afon Caerfannell in the Brecon Beacons We had an enjoyable, productive day on the beautiful Afon Caerfanell high up in the Brecon Beacons.

The group worked hard and were a pleasure to take away.

The class were split into four groups: the Usk, Wye, Teifi and Taff. We took measurements and collected data in three different sites in the Youthful, Mature and Old Age stages of the river.

The pupils focused on the downstream changes in the river’s course as well as looking at the variations in Gradient, Width, Depth and Velocity.

we moved downstream towards its mouth in Talybont Reservoir, where eventually the Caerfanell reaches its confluence with the Usk. Year 6 worked hard on their enquiries and averaged over 80% for their completed studies.

FRENCH learned and which you can now hear being spontaneously sung at times as you walk down the corridors during the day.

This year the French room has undergone a thorough spring clean but some hidden treasures such as a wonderful little French spelling book from 1959 was kept and some of its pages found their rightful place in the Year 3 exercise books during the term. The room was also given a face lift, ensuring a much brighter, more spacious, and altogether more welcoming learning space for all to enjoy.

After the Christmas holidays, the children embraced the opportunity to experience something quite different and were ready for a new adventure from the word allez. Much of the focus shifted onto ensuring that each pupil felt supported as there was a steep increase in the use of the target language in lessons. Pupils have done well to try and switch from using English in the classroom to only speaking French and they should be applauded for adjusting so swiftly.

In the Upper School, there has been more time dedicated to learning the mechanisms of the language, and whilst pupils found this perhaps the most testing of all the changes, they have become not only capable of using metalanguage such as personal pronoun, possessive adjective, infinitive or conjugated verb forms, but also more confident as they have achieved growing control over the language.

With t h e summer sunshine came the highly anticipated ISEB examinations. As usual, the French speaking exams opened the Common Entrance season. Year 8 pupils have been overjoyed about the recently revised format of the assessment which no longer requires them to memorise lengthy monologues but favours a more spontaneous and interactional performance. They have done full justice to the many, many hours spent reviewing our grammar and revising our vocabulary!

Nursery, Lower and Middle School pupils enjoyed a host of new interactive play opportunities in lessons and adapted to speaking French just as well as their older peers. They particularly enjoyed the many songs and rhymes which we

Looking forward to the next academic term, plans are in place to make teaching and learning in the department even more effective and enjoyable for all. As part of our effort to raise the academic profile of the subject and to create strong links with leading Languages Departments across the country, we have now signed up to be members of the UK’s Independent Schools’ Modern Languages Association (ISMLA), alongside other schools such as Eton, St Paul’s School and Cheltenham Lady’s College.

This membership will help us create a wider range of academic opportunities outside the school for our most able linguists, such as taking part in writing competitions or drama festivals at national level. We are also hoping to start our DELF Prim club, during which we will prepare pupils who desire to gain an internationally recognised diploma in French to sit this prestigious exam at the French Institute in London in the summer of 2024.

LATIN & CLASSICAL CIVILISATION

This summer marked the first year of the Classical Civilisation Common Entrance exam. The Year 8s worked hard on this part of the course and it was a great opportunity for them to hone their research and presentation skills. Powerpoint and Canva.com were used very effectively and they also produced some great sketches worthy of Horrible Histories.

Mr Horsted started off the year for us with his excellent talk on Roman Magic. Years 5 -8 were involved in making potions and reciting magic spells.

Even though we followed the instructions to the letter for an

invisibility spell, I was actually quite relieved I could still see everyone afterwards. Mr Horsted will be back in the new school year with a talk entitled ‘Baths, gladiators and chariots: leisure and entertainment in ancient Rome’.

This year, Years 6 & 7 have had one lesson of Latin and one of Classical Civilisation each week (and Year 8 will follow the same pattern from September).

In Latin, we have followed a similar pattern to previous years, to ensure that children are prepared for Common Entrance

and have a sufficient grounding to go onto GCSE at their next school if they wish.

In Classical Civilisation, they have gone into a number of topics in sufficient detail for the Common Entrance exam – these include stories from Homer’s Odyssey, the Roman Army, the Trojan War, the Kings from Early Rome, Roman & Greek Gods and the 12 Labours of Heracles.

Next year there will be a few changes.

All lessons in both subjects will be taught in the library and Year 5 will be able to use the various online resources more readily as they will now have their own Chromebooks.

SPANISH Hola a todos!

Another great year in the Spanish Department. I have thoroughly enjoyed this year, everyone on site playing the famous Rockalingua songs in class and having all the children singing in Spanish! It has been a pleasure to teach everyone from Reception to Year 6, and I am very excited to be teaching all the way to Year 8 from September 2023 - a lot of exciting projects and plans ahead!

Lower School Lower School enjoyed our famous “Rockalingua” songs and videos – it is always fun and exciting to learn this way. We have listened to an animated version of “El Quijote” which has been very popular. We have covered many topics including: personal introduction, days of the week, vowels, colours, numbers, parts of the body and have learnt about Spanish culture.

Upper School Upper School focused and developed their language skills, speaking, listening and writing, with excellent classwork. Year 6 produced fantastic speeches, focusing on pronunciation and it was great to hear excellent Spanish being spoken in lessons.

I am delighted with everyone’s progress over the year, well done to all the children at Tockington!

PHSE & SMSC of exciting assemblies this year including our Black History Month assembly celebrating African culture, Miss Green’s personal safety demonstration, a celebration of togetherness for World Storytelling Day and Mrs Greenbank’s class delivered an assembly on diversity in the Summer Term.

PSHE and SMSC provision has continued to flourish this year. Our creative curriculum focuses on a holistic approach to developing children who are healthy, sociable and emotionally literate. It covers key concepts and skills to support pupils’ SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural) Education, focusing on Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World.

Lessons include a wide variety of enjoyable activities including discussions, role play as well as art, craft, and design tasks.

PSHE lessons at Tockington Manor School aim to prepare children for life in modern Britain.

Pupils are encouraged to develop and apply skills and attitudes that will allow them to become full and active citizens in our wider global community. Particular highlights this year included: Year 7’s persuasive speeches, where each pupil had to present their views on a chosen topic using public speaking and persuasive techniques; Year 5 creating role plays for moral dilemmas; and Year 3 looking at how we communicate through a variety of methods including BSL and morse code.

Our “Look at my work” assemblies give children detailed insight into the world of work and develop their understanding of different career paths. We have had a wide range

Year 5

HISTORY

Year 5 had an excellent first term studying the Tudors and Stuarts. They particularly enjoyed making a family tree, learning about James I of England and looking at the differences between the Roundheads and Cavaliers. In our lesson on using critical thinking, pupils looked at the "for" and "against" of 'can a celebrity ever receive a fair trial?' Year 5 compared Charles I to some well-known people, and how the jury will always be biased by opinion.

Pupils spent a morning in a "Tudor workshop", practiced jousting, made medicines and learnt a lot from two very funny Tudors! Year 5 continued their learning about Oliver Cromwell (warts and all) and the restoration of the Monarchy, including Charles II’s bumbling response to the Great Fire of London! In the Summer Term Year 5 studied the Victorian era. Students were mesmerised with the school system at this time and really tuned into lessons when we learnt about the punishments children endured if they were naughty at school! Another fascinating area of study was looking at working conditions for children.

Pupils had to pick if they wanted to be a miner, work in the factories or in agriculture. Finally, we have looked at how conditions improved for women during the Victorian era and we will revisit what life was like for women next year when we start our studies looking at World War One. Year 5 have had a great year and the confidence evident at the end of this

year is astonishing compared to the pupils sat in my class last September.

Year 6 Year 6 are truly blessed with the topics studied and thoroughly enjoyed learning about World War One to start the Academic Year. Pupils showed a particular amazement for trench systems and the horrid conditions soldiers encountered, writing a final letter home before going over the top at the Battle of the Somme. Similarly, children have been fascinated by weapons and the technological wave of advancement in this field. Year 6 had a fantastic term learning about World War Two. We looked at the social aspects of how Hitler came to power and his power of persuasion.

We read "Genesis and Catastrophe"

by Roald Dahl and discussed whether we felt sorry for baby Adolf before knowing it was him. We then researched the economic state of Germany and why they might have been convinced by Hitler once he was chancellor. We played a game in which we "helped" Hitler make the "right" decisions to get to the title of Fuhrer.

After looking at the Nazis' rise to power, we concentrated on the war itself and how life was for normal citizens. Year 6 concluded their World Wars studies by presenting some outstanding work on their family’s contribution to the war efforts. It was great hearing how pupils contacted grandparents and spoke to relatives to conduct their research, helping to keep memories alive. Equally astonishing was some of the memorabilia shown during the presentations – some of the stories really did bring a tear to our eyes.

In the final term, Year 6 studied the Transatlantic Slave Trade, focusing on Britain’s and more locally, Bristol’s involvement.

Topics included the triangular trade, the middle passage including the horrendous conditions endured, famous abolitionists and we extended our studies to look at the civil rights movement and a brief look at topical issues affecting America today.

Year 6 have been astonished at how these global events impact our lives today and I have been super pleased with the enthusiasm and gusto shown in History this year!

Year 7 Year 7 kick started the year delving straight into the Common Entrance syllabus, commencing with the events of 1066 and the eventual coronation of William I, and conducting an indepth study into how William crushed the rebellions and took total control of England. They had a brilliant time making their Norman castles. First, they planned the design, making sure they had all the features of a Norman castle, and figure out what material we would need. Once they had the correct design and measurements, they wrote a paragraph explaining why they had chosen it and sent an invite to Mr Symonds inviting him to come view our castles once they were built (with plenty of notice!). Year 7 presented their castles to Mr Symonds and in Spring term they also presented them to Year 2 in their Castle week. Year 7 moved on from Normans to study the Crusaders. They found out about who they were, the relationships between the Christians and the Muslims, and who key figures like Saladin were.

Finally, Year 7 researched a topic for debate: "Was the war in Iraq a Crusade?" Pupils looked at George Bush's point of view and talked about what the word "crusade" means and what "jihadi" means. In the Summer Term, Year 7 continued following the Common Entrance specification studying Henry II and his fractious relationship with Thomas Becket and the eventual murder at Canterbury Cathedral – this is an important topic and will feature in the Year 8 end of year examinations next year. Year 7 were introduced to past papers, getting to grips with essays and TH E TOC KI NGTONI A N

source analysis, eventually sitting a past paper as part of their summer examination.

Year 7 performed very well and have laid excellent foundations and I am excited to witness their essay writing and exam technique next year.

Year 8 Year 8 started the year focusing on the Common Entrance examination topics and commenced with the fascinating events surrounding the Black Plague (including a song!) and they played a survival game. Year 8 tried to get around Europe as a merchant/traveller without dying - they could choose to travel by foot or by boat but had to visit all the merchant cities. Pupils covered Edward I and II and developed essay writing skills.

In the Summer Term, focus swiftly turned to the external Common Entrance examinations, with a look at new topics such as Monks and Nuns, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and the Battle of Agincourt. Year 8 coped extremely well with essay writing, honing their revision skills and fine tuning their exam technique. All of this hard work

led to an outstanding set of Common Entrance results this year! I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching Year 8 and remember them fondly as little Year 5s when I first started teaching at Tockington Manor. I wish them all the very best at their Senior Schools!

COMPUTING

Computing at Tockington has continued to progress throughout the academic year and what we are doing is now being used as an example at other schools. We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of change and embracing new advancements with open arms - our Artificial Intelligence block of work with Years 5-8 epitomised that.

Within their designated computing lessons the pupils continue to develop their fundamental skills.

Years 3 and 4 have picked up an additional timetabled lesson this year to develop their skills across the curriculum, something which has

been a real success. Walking around the school it is clear to see how wellembedded computing is throughout the curriculum. From Reception to Year 8, pupils work with technology to enhance and develop their learning experience. This has been supported by the continued use of our 1-1 device programme. Every pupil from Year 6-8 has access to their own Chromebook, alongside a dedicated bank of Chromebooks for the Lower School.

This has transformed teaching and learning and has given every pupil the opportunity to engage with technology to enhance their learning. I am excited to see our programme expand with Year 5 also being included in

the programme from 2023-2024 - an important milestone for the school.

This programme has attracted praise from our friends at many Senior Schools, who visit us to learn from what we are doing here and thank us for creating a seamless transition for our Y8 pupils.

We are continuously looking forward and have exciting plans for our Lower School and Nursery’s ICT provision, so watch this space!

OUTDOOR LEARNING Once again, the development of Outdoor Learning at TMS this year has flourished, with children across the Upper School and Lower School enthusiastically engaging with nature within their learning and in extracurricular activities.

Lower School has continued to foster their love of outdoor learning by exploring the world around them.

Reception, in particular, has enjoyed learning outside this year, tending to their garden and even using the strawberries in their Maths lessons.

A particular highlight was when the children crushed natural objects with stones to create squash art.

At the beginning of the year the Year 1 children wrapped up warm and thoroughly enjoyed their sensory walk around the beautiful school grounds.

They wrote down what they could see, hear, feel and smell to help inform their descriptive writing unit, based around our Supertato text. We saw aeroplanes, smelt bonfires, and felt the long grass.

Year 2 continued their pen pal relationship with Clifton College and enjoyed a trip to their Forest School in May where they climbed trees, created wood cookies and dug for buried treasure. Year 2 has also used outdoor learning to support many class topics, from right angle finding and measuring in maths, exploring living things in the habitats around our school in science, and taking a field trip around Tockington to sketch map our local area for Geography.

Throughout the year Upper School students have enjoyed participating in Forest School activities during their Saturday School sessions. The focus this year has been woodwork and crafting with children using palm drills, whittling knives and saws to craft their own wood creations.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning these new skills and applying their creativity to the tasks presented to them. They also experienced a campfire session where they learned about fire safety and enjoyed snacks cooked on an open fire.

We have continued our work on developing the kitchen garden this year. The harvest in late Summer and early Autumn produced some fantastic results, particularly the courgettes, which were used by Harrisons in school lunches.

T h e children a l s o enjoyed tasting the different varieties of raspberries produced in the main beds.

Upper School has introduced a gardening club this year, which has been beneficial in providing the children with a greater opportunity to develop their understanding of horticulture under the guiding influence of Mr LLoyd, Mrs Morris and Miss Green. Reception gardening club remains a popular activity on a Wednesday lunchtime with around 90% of the Reception children joining up. The pupils have enjoyed learning about the life cycles of different vegetables and relished getting to grips with basic gardening techniques.

Craft and Nature Club is an everpopular activity choice in Years 3 - 5 and gives the children an opportunity to develop their love of the great outdoors and interest in nature, crafting and art. Throughout the year, they have enjoyed participating in activities such as creating their own birds and completing the Big Schools Bird Watch in January; using natural resources to design and build homes for mini friends and pressing flowers.

Our passion for an outdoors lifestyle has even transcended to Family Fun Day where Year 7 ran a tree climbing stall. During the day over 70 children climbed a tree that measured just under five metres. This is just another example of how Tockington Manor School is striving to promote a positive relationship with nature and a healthy outdoor lifestyle.

1st XIII An enjoyable season with the squad all working hard to improve their core skills and rugby knowledge. The group was a pleasure to coach.

Our top try scorer was Jenson with 11 tries - he proved himself to be an explosive winger. Joshua, our captain, scored 4, leading the side effectively from the fly-half position. We played some fluid, attacking rugby during the season. They worked hard for each other and were always looking to attack and go forward. The season’s highlights were our excellent wins against The Downs in atrocious conditions and a hard-fought victory against QEH, where we ran out 30-5 winners.

Overall, a most pleasurable season. Stan D was awarded the ‘Hollington Cup’ for the Best Player - he played superbly in every match regardless of the score. Harrison L, Joshua N and Jenson E were integral to the teams’ development and played with determination and skill all season.

U11 Warriors

U10 Sharks

The U11 boys were introduced to rucking with a 2 man rule from each side, which can create a complicated fixture if not executed well. Thankfully, this group of boys is an extremely talented bunch and produced some outstanding rugby performances this season. The best of the Wednesday afternoons came on a cold November at Beaudesert, where the boys won all their games to win their Severnside Tournament, a highly coveted tournament.

The progress throughout the season was outstanding, evidenced by a win vs Monmouth towards the end of our season, who had beaten us in the first game we played.

In total, the Warriors scored 30 tries. 12 boys represented the team in total and they can all be proud of what they contributed. I believe this group of boys have the potential to be a superb rugby team and I congratulate everyone for playing their part in a successful season. All the best to the boys next year playing 1st team rugby.

Sharks had a very good season and they have learnt a great deal. The team worked hard, going from strength to strength. The boys put in their best effort and were resilient throughout. We became stronger, improved our handling skills and overall game situation. Although we got tackled heavily at times, we stood up and kept playing hard. All these boys should be proud of themselves after the season they had - what a great team you are! I am very proud of your achievements during this rugby season.

U9 Scarlets

U9 Dragons

An unbeaten season with the U9 Scarlets winning 6 and drawing 4 of their 10 matches.

The U9 Dragons had an excellent season, developing their knowledge and skills within the game. For the first time, these boys played contact rugby and enjoyed developing that aspect of the game. It is very easy at this level to let the contact side of the game dominate matches, however, the boys understood that their handling skills would be required to experience success. The boys worked extremely hard on their ball skills and handling, especially offloading during a tackle. The boys were a pleasure to coach all season and I look forward to seeing them progress next year when rucking is introduced to the game.

The squad played fluent, cohesive rugby, attacking with purpose and defending effectively as a team. We scored 45 tries over the season. We were well supported by a good number of our parents in every match - thank you.

Max A scored 15 of our tries with Thomas G scoring 14 from the wing. The last match of the season, against The Downs was a close affair with Tockington being 2 tries down with 5 minutes remaining. We came back to draw 6-6 in an exciting, high-quality encounter.

U8 Wasps

Quins played their very first season of Tag Rugby. This is a good introduction to the game and a fun way to learn rugby. Tag rugby can be tricky to learn and this team worked hard in both lessons and fixtures. The boys made good progress as the term progressed and all of them performed well. Having learned the basics of the game, I am looking forward to seeing you play contact rugby next year.

A super first season of Tag Rugby for the Wasps. Our skills improved greatly as the term went on, which enabled us to score some fantastic tries and compete against some strong opponents. The boys showed great bravery and team spirit in every match and were really enjoyable to coach. I am sure they will adapt well to contact rugby next year.

Year 5-8 Cymric Cup for House Rugby A closely fought series of matches resulted in Alexander coming out on top in the U11 part of the tournament, with Cunningham and Churchill playing some outstanding rugby on the U13 pitch. The matches were played in an excellent spirit, the pupils displaying exemplary sportsmanship. There was some fast-flowing rugby against well-marshalled defences. The final U13 match was a cracker with Oscar HP scoring a well-worked try to beat a very talented Cunningham outfit. Isaac K, the winning House Captain received the Cymric Cup from Mr. Symonds amid rapturous applause. Well played all!

The girls worked hard this season adapting their skills to different match play situations in preparation for moving to 11-a-side hockey at U14s. In training we focused on versatility as players, allowing the girls to gain a deeper understanding of formation and the tactics that go with it.

All the girls developed in this area, evidenced in match play where they held possession and moved the ball around beautifully. In addition, the U13s increased their ball pace which allowed them to move around the pitch quicker, creating many counter-attacks on the opposition.

The girls excelled across all areas of the pitch and their effort levels and work rate are to be commended. They showed superb versatility to each play in several positions, working hard to adapt to roles and became successful in making good use of space. This resulted in some outstanding play down the line and in creating so many goal-scoring opportunities. All the girls defended well and developed a strong understanding of ‘setting the press’ for free passes or at hit-outs. Towards the end of the season, there were some excellent performances leading to solid victories and it was evident that new skills were being transferred from training into match play.

The season finished on a high at the Dean Close tournament. The girls won every match until the final against Dean Close where we finished with a 5-5 draw after extra time, sharing the trophy.

There is huge potential within this group and I am sure we will see success in their future hockey careers. Well done to all the girls, you have been a pleasure to coach.

U10 Team The children had to familiarise themselves with a new shape in defence, which comes with having a padded-up goalie. Thanks to Connie S and Jess W who stepped up and made a valuable contribution in goal. Also, with the introduction of short corners (this is a ‘set play’ move for a penalty), Ruby L and Sienna R were superb ‘injectors’ displaying fantastic strong, accurate push passes when needed for this move.

In the field, the girls started to develop a preference for playing attack or defensive positions, and by the end of season they were looking a strong and cohesive unit. The future looks as exciting! Well done to all the girls.

U9 Team Both in lessons and fixtures this squad showed much promise throughout the season as they adapted to 7-a-side hockey. The girls are becoming more acquainted with their roles on the pitch; they are developing confidence to make the tackle and several of the girls are beginning to keep an eye firmly on the goal in matches.

Their effort and work rate have been commendable throughout and we very much look forward to seeing these girls progress into U10s next year, with goalies, short corners and all the other challenges that the older year group brings.

U8 Team It is always a pleasure to see such determination and focus from the U8 girls as they pick up their hockey sticks and get to grips with the rules of hockey for the first time.

Throughout the season, the girls have shown a good level of focus and determination, and the ability to pick up new skills and begin to implement these into match play. Many of our early matches were used as training focuses and, alongside the other schools, there were great opportunities for the girls to get a feel for the game and improve their ability to work together as a team. The girls learned how to host a team during home fixtures as well as the need for independence during away fixtures.

All the girls have shown great progress and it has been wonderful to observe the development each player made throughout the season. We had a mixture of outcomes, but most notably, the improvement from all players was outstanding.

The Taylor Woodford Cup for House Hockey House/Tournament Captains Addi, Immy, Elsie and Katie are to be congratulated for organising and leading their teams so efficiently, also all the girls for their sportsmanship, coming together and putting in 100% for their House team. There were many highlights - no less than 27 goals were scored. Shots on goal saved by goalies (or the permitted ‘kicking Backs’) were just as plentiful with Alexander finishing with a clean sheet.

Katie W went on to play with the Academy Squad while Amelia R was selected to represent the West Panthers 'Trophy Team' at the U13 UK Festival of Hockey in Nottingham in July 2023.

CROSS COUNTRY The 2022-23 season was a most enjoyable and successful one. We again competed in a wide variety of events with individual and team achievements.

Our Monday evening running club was as popular as ever with upwards of 40 members turning out, even on the coldest and darkest of winter evenings. Thanks to Mr Ross, Mr Symonds and Mr Weeks for their invaluable help over the season.

There were 693 PBs (Personal Bests) recorded with over 750 badges given out. There were 101 list improvements with 29 new list entries. Holly HP (U14G), Lola S and Fletcher R (U13B) won the South Gloucestershire Schools Cross Country Championships in their age categories with Darcy S winning the Silver behind her sister in the U13 Girls race. Lola also won the Avon Schools title as well as coming 5th in the National Prep Schools CC Championships at Malvern College, despite having another year in the age group. Her team (Amelia R, Darcy S and Holly HP) came 2nd, just 7 places behind Millfield School. Our team claimed the Small Schools trophy by a wide margin. The U13 Boys also won the Small Schools Cup with Jenson E, Fletcher R, Wilf R and Joshua N making up the team.

The U11 Boys team were victorious in the Severnside Championships at Wycliffe College. Leila Belle S won the U11 Girls race with a determined run from the front.

The U8, U9, U10 and U11 Boys teams won the team race at the Inter Schools event at Westonbirt with Harrison C, Theo G and Oliver G completing a rare 1,2,3 in the U10 race. The U9 and U11 Girls won their team events with Leila Belle S and Isabella R winning their respective races in the U8 and U11 Categories.

All in all a great season with plenty of effort and endeavour.

FOOTBALL 1st XI A fabulous season for the 1st XI where improvements and progression were the themes. Over the years, coaches have tried to develop a style of football that is worked on in the 1st XI and embedded down throughout the teams. This style of work rate and packing the midfield has allowed us to dominate games and move the ball effectively. This talented group of boys were able to dominate games vs bigger schools and as a result, picked up some excellent results. The season is summarised by our two results vs Clifton High School. After losing to them early in the season, our final game showed a dominant display vs the same side, demonstrating how much the boys have developed throughout the season. The 1st XI also made the semi-finals of the Wycliffe 6-a-side tournament, just missing out on the finals by one goal - an outstanding achievement. A special mention to Joshua N who captained the side so well and took home the best player award. I look forward to the 2024 season and overseeing the First XI with the Year 7 boys leading the team, joined by our talented Y6 boys.

U11 Wanderers A fabulous season with the group playing some flowing football and scoring some superb goals. Every footballer played their part, keeping their shape and discipline whatever the score. The team were unbeaten during the season in their inter-school matches, a great achievement! We also defended well as a unit, always tenacious and well-organised.

Girls' Football Football continues to be an extremely popular sport with the girls, with 2023 providing the most opportunities ever for them to play. As well as their annual fixture with Clifton High, the U13 girls have also had the opportunity to play in two tournaments. Notably, the girls won the inaugural 6-a-side tournament at Wycliffe, a wonderful achievement. There have also been fixtures for the first time for the U9 and U11 girls, something that will continue going forward. Football club continues to be popular, with half its members being girls. I congratulate all the girls involved this year and will continue to work to provide even more opportunities for football in 2024.

U9 Rangers

An excellent season! The boys were a pleasure to coach, all showing good progress with their skills and awareness in match situations. They all worked hard and were focused in their training sessions. They held their shape in matches and worked hard on trying to pass the ball to a teammate.

Henry T was outstanding in the centre of our mid-field, scoring 14 goals during the season. Teddy was a stalwart in goal, often playing outfield in the final third of matches showing his adaptability and energy.

A fine season for the Rangers with all the squad contributing on the pitch. Our ability to keep our positions, plus superb teamwork, meant that we were hard to play against. It was great to see a number of different boys on the scoresheet as well. Well done on a great term.

Alexander competed valiantly showing great resilience and determination throughout. Cunningham won both their matches in the U11 section with a winner just 4 seconds from the end of their final encounter with a combative Churchill outfit.

Churchill emerged as the top side in the U13 section with two narrow wins over their old rivals. The tournament was played in an excellent spirit with good sportsmanship evident throughout the morning. The boys played some very good football with some impressive skills as well as a few cracking goals. Well played!

NETBALL U13 The girls demonstrated smart attacking netball skills while defending was determined and resilient. In particular, I was delighted to see feeding into the shooters really gathering momentum, some consistent shooting stats and the girls had fun implementing set plays with real confidence - especially from the defensive back line and at the centre pass.

The girls rotated a large squad, which allowed some players to develop in more than one position, and the girls must be commended for always keeping the opposition under pressure to the final whistle - they proved to be great Tockington athletes.

In the match against Rougemont the girls looked a cohesive attacking unit from centre pass to goal. They have really shown depth of understanding within their roles and of the game as a whole, and I really hope they continue to grow.

Season Analysis

I was very pleased to see the standard of netball on court for our House matches. The House Challenge usually brings out the best in effort and work rate and this year was no exception. I don't think we could have asked for any more in terms of determination and commitment, not to mention having to adapt to the different formats, post sizes and playing combinations!

Despite freezing temperatures and very cold hands, shooting was on point with some games reaching more than 1 goal per minute. U11 With three teams, were named after netball Super League teams: Storm, Dragons and Stars. Throughout the season, the squads’ main combination was traditional 7-aside netball. However, for one fixture, the girls adapted well to play 5-aside Bee Stinger-style netball, where positions on court rotate, requiring the girls to adapt to unfamiliar positions.

They showed super versatility.

It was clear by the end of the season that all girls had made vast improvements with their individual netball skills from catching, throwing and shooting to dynamic movement on the court. As well as this, the girls collaborated well in their teams and they showed super determination leading up to their final fixture against Rougemont, when all squads signed off with a victory.

It was a pleasure for us to coach and umpire the girls and watch their skills develop throughout a successful netball season. We look forward to seeing their future achievements next year.

U8 After a successful hockey season, the U8 girls were keen to start netball, showing great determination both in lessons and fixtures. Throughout the term, we played combinations of 4-a-side Bee Flier Netball, which gives the whole team an opportunity to play in a range of ‘positions’ with minimal rules. With the purpose of developing enjoyment, confidence and knowledge of the game.

As the term went on, the girls developed their passing, shooting and catching skills as well showing a superb understanding of the rule of footwork in netball. In total we played five fixtures with a mixture of results throughout.

All the girls have shown great potential and we look forward to working with them for their next netball season.

Miss Collins and Miss Bird Season Analysis - Orange

U9 This was an outstanding season for the U9s who were undefeated until the closing match’s final whistle against Dean Close St Johns - a very tight game which could easily have gone either way.

Playing on a full size court this year, the format for matches was usually 5-aside Bee Stinger style, where positions are rotated, allowing the girls the freedom to focus on core netball skills rather than working at a set role. It is clear from the score lines that this squad has some natural ability shooters and good solid passes started to develop. Furthermore, I was frequently delighted with how hard the girls worked to get free against some tall opposition. The score lines for ‘Goals Against’ also illustrate how determined the girls were in marking their players - fantastic interceptions and rebounds became the norm in matches, due to some superb athleticism and agility to turn over possession.

There has been a lot to be proud of - a memorable season for the U9s, and with great anticipation I look forward to seeing how these girls develop over the coming years.

Trip to Netball Vitality Super League 2023 A group of Year 5 to 8 girls went along to watch our local Super League Club, Team Bath, as they took on the Strathclyde Sirens at Bath University. We were spoilt with a nicely contested match which was nail-biting to the end, the Blue and Golds winning by just one goal 49:48. Back in our Games lesson on Saturday morning the girls were brimming with enthusiasm as we discussed the array of skills displayed. Thank you to all the girls for their impeccable behaviour, especially as it was a late night, also to Mrs Bailey, Miss Collins and Miss Green for their help on the evening.

2nd Communities U11 5 aside Netball Tournament A fun afternoon for the U11 girls - our four teams played some skilful netball against Almondsbury and St Peter's Primary schools and represented TMS with their usual enthusiasm and determination. TMS Storm and Stars came runnersup in their respective pools, each only losing one of their matches. The Stars narrowly missed a clean sheet by a tense 1 goal defeat against Almondsbury. The tournament concluded what has been a very successful and enjoyable netball term - it has been a pleasure to see the girls make such excellent progress.

Thanks to our Year 8 girls who delivered a variety of training sessions to the teams in between matches. They planned and executed the drills independently in Games lessons earlier in the week and were complimented by our visitors for their organisation, knowledge and content within the drills. Thank you also to Sienna B and Belle D for stepping up to play last minute.

SWIMMING It has been an amazing year and I am extremely proud of what every child has achieved. Everyone has made incredible progress over the last few months in the pool and we have been able to take part in several swimming galas and competitions.

Swimming Galas Our Autumn Term Gala was a great success and a very good opportunity to see everyone performing in their Houses and swimming under pressure.

Everyone did well and it was a great day in the pool.

During the Spring Term, we went to Wycliffe for a swimming competition where Years 6, 7 and 8 took part. This was a great opportunity for us to practice diving off blocks before IAPS. TMS swimmers were superb and we won that gala, showing great determination and strength. At the end of the term, our elite swimmers had the opportunity to go to Millfield where we swam the IAPS Regional Championship and some of our children qualified for the IAPS Swimming Finals in London.

Finally, the Summer Term has seen our swimmers perform in two competitions. At the end of half term, our IAPS finalists went to London where they swam at the London Aquatic Centre, used in the 2012 Olympics - an incredible venue and outstanding performances from all our swimmers.

The Lower School swimming gala took place after half term, and wow, what a morning of swimming. All the children performed outstandingly, demonstrating their swimming skills and amazing progress over the year.

We had seahorse races, sinkers, full lengths for Year 2 and House wiggles races. All the children took part fully and they showed great spirit in such a busy event.

Well done to all the children, there have been endless numbers of personal bests, achievements, fun and progress. I look forward to seeing you back in the pool in the new year!

IAPS Results We took part in the Regional competition in March and after a lovely day in the pool, a group of swimmers qualified for the finals in London. We received the news of our swimmers shortly after Easter holidays: Holly HP and Isaac K for 50m backstroke; Oscar HP for 50m front crawl; and finally Elsie L, who qualified for 50m breaststroke.

It was an incredible experience and our swimmers were an asset to the school. We are very proud of their achievements.

Season Analysis

Cricket continues to thrive at Tockington Manor, with more pupils playing outside of school than ever before as well as countless opportunities provided internally. The hard work starts in the cold winter nights, with Mr Weeks and Mr Drury running our popular winter nets programme to allow us to get the season off to a flyer. Many thanks to the two of them for running this again.

This season continued to provide an opportunity for boys and girls, where we had three senior teams again competing under the names 1st, 2nd and 3rd XIs, with all students mixed together. Everyone got the opportunity to develop their hardball skills throughout the season and all students represented the school on numerous occasions, both in hard and soft ball. Many individual performances stood out throughout the season for the 1st XI, who arguably had their most successful season ever against high-quality opposition. Five 50s were scored this season, Anay N with three, who went on to average an impressive 56.5 with the bat throughout the season. 50s were also scored by 1st XI captain Harrison L, who led the team excellently and always contributed with bat and ball.

2nd XI This was an enjoyable and successful season for the 2nd XI. They played some excellent cricket which included emphatic wins against Clifton College, Wycliffe College, and Stonar School. They were a cohesive and supportive group.

The team were an absolute pleasure to coach, all showing rapid progress with their skills, particularly their bowling and fielding. They all worked hard and were focused in their training sessions. Holly HP was our top run scorer, averaging 91! Katie W and Isaac K our leading wicket takers. Jack S and Katie W were our top performers in the field with numerous catches and run outs between them.

Cricket 3rd XI The 3rd XI has been a pleasure to coach this season. All members of the team have shown great progression with their bowling action, understanding of the game, and tactics when batting. We have had some very close and high-scoring games this season, including our most exciting game against St John’s where we won by just 6 runs on the final ball! The squad had the opportunity to play on the 1st XI square on two occasions and have played in a hard ball pairs game. This has allowed the players to learn how to adapt to different speeds on the wicket and to different versions of the game. Each player has shown improvement and I am sure that our leavers will go on to develop further at their senior schools. A great season, well done!

U11 Gladiators

U11 Dragons

A superb season for the Gladiators, with a number of exciting and competitive matches being played in super weather. The standard of cricket was outstanding with every squad player competent in all three facets of the game. It was great to see several Year 5 boys in this U11 team, demonstrating the strength in depth for years to come. The highlight of the term for the Gladiators was a fine win away at Clifton College. Parish B scored a cracking 50 and as always, the team backed him up with some outstanding bowling and fielding. The enthusiasm for the sport that the boys showed was amazing and their appetite to learn and improve made them all a pleasure to coach.

The Dragons have impressed us this season with their enthusiasm and stand-out team performances. There were some close games that highlighted fantastic effort and focus in the field, and as the season went on we enjoyed seeing batting pairs making excellent progress.

Our biggest win was by 23 runs against St John’s, but our most memorable match was against Collegiate when Isaac took a stunning catch, Freddie S had an amazing day with the bat and Amelie and Oscar D stopped the opposition in their tracks with their fine bowling. So much to take from this season, the Dragons have been a real pleasure to coach.

The development for many players has been most noticeable in the field - in matches, there have been memorable run-outs and some excellent catching. The love for cricket has been clear to see and there was no shortage of wickets taken. I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching the Outlaws this season, well done to all and thank you.

It has been a most enjoyable term coaching the Eagles.

Playing some determined and enthusiastic cricket, they went unbeaten in the first half with the most convincing wins being against Wycliffe by 35 runs and St John’s by 16 runs. There were two close matches in the second half decided by just a few runs in the final overs. I was particularly proud of how the squad built on skills developed in lessons - bowling went from strength to strength. Our highlights were George G’s regular catches at Mid-Wicket, Rupert and Leon’s big boundary hits, Ruby’s coverage of the field limiting the runs, and the way this team supported and encouraged each other. The Blast

U9 Girls Festival at The Downs

The blast tournament was exciting with each house winning one match. There was some excellent cricket played during the morning and we were impressed by the fielding. Everyone was supportive with excellent team spirit and leadership evident. Well done to everyone who took part in this tournament.

Two teams entered The Downs' Festival where we competed against five other schools and won 4 of our 5 matches. Festival highlights included some top batting with the ball reaching the boundary more than 20 times and five catches taken. Against Redmaids’ we won by a memorable 44 runs.

U9 Invincibles We were very pleased with the Invincibles both in lessons and in matches this season. Some good bowling techniques started to develop and in our batting pairs we saw some effective communication and decision-making emerging. Against Collegiate, Efan hit three 4s, Brendan two 4s and a 6! Aryansham and Henry showed us how they could bowl consistently - in this match we were proud to take six wickets! Another highlight was against Dean Close when Effie stood out for bowling a consistent line and length, assisting in a well-earned win.

The Invincibles have been memorable this season for their enthusiasm! They have players who obviously love their cricket and they make a great team. Thank you to you all.

What an encouraging season this was for the U9 Braves - for some Year 3 players this was their first season of school cricket fixtures. On the whole, batting was steady and some good partnerships started to emerge.

With plenty of wickets taken, all the matches were closely fought, with the Downs and Llandaff matches decided in nail-biting final overs. I was particularly pleased with the way players supported each other and the progress made with fielding and catching. Very well done to all, we look forward to seeing you progress next season.

I had the pleasure of coaching the U9 Phoenix team who all developed their love and knowledge of cricket throughout the season. All players took to the field for the school and worked really hard on their techniques. ATHLETICS Athletics continues to be a strong and successful sport at Tockington. The track was very well used with the pupils having a go at all the track and field events on offer. Our Monday running club and Friday evening Athletics Clubs were well subscribed with the pupils always enthusiastic and willing to work hard. I am grateful for the valued help given by Mr Ross and Mr Weeks. Thanks also to Miss Green for running her throws club which has helped all of our field athletes to improve their technique.

We attended the annual Beaudesert Park athletics meeting in May, ending the meeting gaining 22 podium places and 7 Severnside Champions.

Congratulations, Fletcher, Holly, Lola, Leila Belle, Oscar H-P, Jackson and Finn C. We won 7 Silver Medals and 7 Bronze Medals.

In June we competed in the South West Athletics Championships at Millfield School. The athletes performed admirably and we had a great day out gaining invaluable experience.

We competed very well thanks to our preparations and maintaining our fitness throughout the term with our classes and club programme.

We had one South West Champion by the end of proceedings - Jackson S winning the Under 12 Boys 200m. We are very proud of all our athletes, who performed outstandingly well during a hot day at Millfield. The group behaved impeccably and were a pleasure to take to the event. Alongside many PB's were nine podium places. There were Silver medals won by: Leila Belle S, Lola S and Holly H-P (1500m) and Darcy S (800m). Bronze medals were won by: Jenson E (100 and 200m), Poppy R (Javelin) and Fletcher R (1500m) Five of our elite athletes took part in The National Prep School Championships at The Pingles Stadium, Nuneaton.

Leila Belle placed 7th in the U12 1500m, Lola was 6th in the U13 1500m, Holly 12th in the U14 1500m, Darcy S was 5th in the U13 800m and Jackson 10th in the U12 100m. Congratulations to all five of you, who performed to the very best of your ability - what an experience! You were an absolute credit to Tockington throughout the term.

ESAA Award Scheme During the term, the pupils worked towards gaining points for their Houses, individually and on improving their PBs on the ESAA Award Scheme.

Years 3-8 achieved some excellent times and distances with the revamped ESAA Scheme, proving a real encouragement in their pursuit of PBs and self-improvement.

During the term there were 156 Gold Award standards reached, with many of our pupils achieving four or more in a range of events.

I would like to thank Jenson, Katie and Holly for the excellent job they did as Athletics Captains - they were good role models for our younger pupils. This was apparent when, together with their Year 8 class, they helped lead a very well-run Sports Day for the Lower School, expertly organised by Mr Ross.

TENNIS Tennis has been a very popular activity in both Games lessons and break times again this year. Tennis Club after school has also been well attended.

Two school fixtures took place against The Downs and we were delighted with the standard of tennis displayed, with players also taking ownership of their umpiring and scoring. It was a pleasure to see such maturity and sportsmanship.

In our first meet we came away with an overall win, with the boys taking four of their five matches and the girls winning one of their four matches. The boys were represented by Anay N, Josh N, Alex FW, Harrison L, Oscar HP and Basil B; the girls’ team was Holly HP, Katie W, Delilah B, Elsie L, Ameila R, Poppy R and Gloria D. Mr Weeks commented on the girls’ determination to get the ball back which resulted in some exciting rallies and also the quality of the boys’ groundstrokes.

These were played to a high sttandard this year with the usual excitement and enthusiasm we have come to expect. There were some closely fought matches with results as follows:

In the second match we hosted the Downs and achieved another overall win, 6-2. It was a beautiful afternoon of tennis with all our Astro courts in use. All five pairs played some excellent tennis with results going both ways and it was a pleasure seeing the game being enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Josh and Anay who won both of their matches and to the whole team who played in a fair spirit - fantastic ambassadors of TMS. The team was represented by Harrison L and Isaac K, Holly HP and Katie W, Josh N and Anay N, Amelie K and Gloria D, and Alex FW and Oscar HP.

CLUBS Extra-Curricular activities are a key aspect of life at Tockington Manor School, with clubs playing an essential role in allowing the children to engage in a vast array of activities on a weekly basis.

Both Lower School and Upper School offer several clubs each day, all of which have proved to be very popular with the students. On average throughout the year, 98% of Lower School pupils and 96% of Upper School pupils attended at least one club a week, with many attending more than one club during the week.

These range from break time clubs, such as Ornithology and Podcast Club, lunchtime clubs such as Upper School Gardening Club and Counting Cubs Club or after-school clubs such as Golf Club and Art Club.

ACTIVITY WEEK Activity Week this year focused on two separate themes for Upper School and Lower School. The theme for Upper School was Aardman and the theme for Lower School was Under the Sea.

LOWER SCHOOL: UNDER THE SEA We were treated to a visit from Same but Different, a local theatre company, who lead a session creating giant willow sea creatures. We also created beautiful sea-inspired music with Miss Morton and completed an exciting water rocket challenge with Miss Gooch.

Later in the week the children learned several interesting facts about fish and sea animals during their visit to Bristol Aquarium. They particularly enjoyed meeting Sheila, the biggest fish in the aquarium, watching the pregnant male seahorses and observing the turtles and the giant piranhas swimming in a really big tank.

At the end of the week, the children participated in learning-based play on the top field with Upper School children - working alongside their fellow pupils of all ages created a real sense of community.

UPPER SCHOOL: AARDMAN The children were thrilled to experience a model-making workshop with professional Aardman artists where they created their own versions of famous Aardman characters.

Later in the week they continued the theme, making wildlife videos using Aardman characters and doing digital animations.

Other activities across the week included: The Cracker Challenge in the Science Lab; cheese based cookery; and the ever-popular “Hunt the Teacher” activity where children worked together in mixed age groups to crack the Aardman code. Upper School also took a trip to the Lido at Portishead where the children enjoyed a morning of swimming and visiting the tuck shop courtesy of Mrs Hinchliffe. This included a life-saving skills session run by the lifeguards at the Lido to mark Drowning Prevention Week.

The week ended with a quiz that challenged the children to recap the things they had done and tested their knowledge of Aardman.

NURSERY Nursery had the opportunity to experience a Forest School session with Miss Green where they created wood cookies. The children learned how to use a bow saw safely in pairs and used tent pegs to push out the pith in order to make the wood cookie into a medal. They also enjoyed a construction-based activity where they had to make homes for small figures using natural resources.

SENIOR CAMP On Monday, we went on the minibuses from school to Biblins. The Year 8s were very excited to be back and the Year 7s were excited for their first time there. On arrival, we were put into groups and put up our tents really well—or so we thought! Then we split up into two groups and went orienteering on a trail around the woods. When we got back, we had a nice dinner of jacket potatoes before splitting up into our houses and doing team-building exercises. This was really fun and Alexander obliterated all their opponents.

On Tuesday, the Y8 girls woke up in a lake! Our tents had flooded and we only realised this when Holly's slider went floating past her! We then went caving and did gorge walking, which involved climbing up waterfalls – very fun and very wet — almost as wet as our tents! In the evening we all toasted marshmallows over a campfire and made s'mores.

On Wednesday, we did raft-building. One group felt really positive that their raft was going to work; the other group did not. However, the confident group failed miserably and their raft broke! We all used the canoe slide into the water as our own slide, and we all splashed in—it was great fun! We also did archery and many children got a bullseye. In the evening, we went into a planetarium and learned about constellations. Afterwards, when it got dark, we looked at the real stars and linked it all up!

On Thursday we went kayaking and canoeing to Monmouth and Harry, Maisie, and Mr. Glanville all fell in! We had a great time getting wet. We all had fun and played lots of entertaining games.

On the final day, we miserably packed up our tents and got ready to leave. On the journey home, we sang at the top of our voices. We had such an amazing time at camp this year and we are sure we will never forget all the lovely memories we made here.

PATHWAY PROGRAMME In its inaugural year, the Pathway Programme provided some excellent experiences for the candidates with plenty of insightful information shared. In September, award-winning guest speaker, Jane Leonard, shared her experience of playing for the England Rugby team and rowing the Atlantic Ocean in a world record time. The Pathway Programme pupils had the opportunity to sit down with Jane afterwards for more individual discussions. Also in the Autumn Term, the sports candidates visited Wycliffe College, where Director of Sport Ben Taylor ran a strength and conditioning masterclass in their gym. This allowed the pupils to use different facilities and begin to learn the basics of Olympic Weightlifting.

In the Spring term Dr Gavin Turner, Deputy Head of Clifton College Upper School, visited to share some nuggets on effective revision. Dr Turner delivered an evidence-based presentation aimed at our Academic strand pupils - just in time for their mock exams. In February, pupils on our Sports strand visited Clifton College to have a cricket session with Tim Hancock, the Director of Cricket and former Gloucestershire CCC coach. Finally, for this term, Miss Moreton has worked with our pupils on the Music strand of the programme to deliver a 1-1 session, which included a masterclass in flamenco guitar playing.

The Summer term concluded the first year of the Programme with a functional fitness session at Kokoro Fitness.

The pupils got to try out a range of equipment all led by Head Coach Jonathan Cook. They were put through their paces, experiencing a variety of strength and fundamental movement exercises, followed by two tough and sweaty workouts!

We have a host of exciting opportunities and experiences lined up for the second year of the Programme, including high profile speakers and activities for each of the individual strands.

FRIENDS OF TOCKINGTON MANOR The 2022-23 school year was our first full year which didn’t feel the impact of Covid and the FOTM committee wanted to ensure we had a fantastic year to celebrate.

First up was a casual and relaxed event to meet our new parents - a Wine and Cheese Evening (where the chef got overzealous with the cheese!). For FOTM, this was a successful event. We met parents who were willing to help and offered their services, including the Armstrong family who are now an integral part of FOTM. We had beautiful weather for the Russell Run with many parents attending for the first time. Mr Jones laid out a fantastic course and we raised money for FOTM and The Julian Trust by selling hot drinks and squash. The donated homemade cakes also went down well.

Christmas Fayre is always a lovely and well-attended event. This year Father Christmas was particularly popular and saw over 140 children and the craft hall was constantly busy with a fantastic buzz of adults and children having fun together.

The end of Spring term Easter Egg Hunt is becoming one of my favourite ‘events’ and it’s a lot of fun watching the Year 8s step up and run the event. Each child in the School and Nursery gets to find an egg in the Rose Garden and is rewarded with a small bag of Haribo. The Easter Bunny ensures that each child in school gets to take home an Easter Egg and each child in Nursery gets to take home a chocolate Easter treat.

Next up was our Quiz and Curry night which was very well attended by parents and staff and we had a lot more younger year parents than expected which was great to see. The teachers won again though - hopefully next year someone else might win… This event is always a fantastic start to our year and really allows parents to get to know each other better.

Bonfire night is always fun but this year was our BIGGEST yet, with the addition of a LOT of fireworks. It really was a social and well-enjoyed event. We have been promised more fireworks for 2023’s event so expect it to be even bigger! We thank the Woodward family for donating the fireworks!

The Midsummer Night’s Ball was a great success that needed a lot of different elements and people to come together to make it work. I really couldn’t be happier with the way the ball looked, the incredible food and the high spirits of all those who attended it.

The big event of every school year is Fun Day! I have to express how relieved I am that it didn’t rain after the initial morning downpour and when the sun came out it brought out with it lots of happy and smiling people. This year we introduced lots of new elements including the bouncy assault course, tree climbing, Chinese dishes, Punch and Judy show and the emergency services. My only complaint is that I didn’t get any of the sweet & sour chicken or Pablo’s famous Paella.

We introduced bars to some of the school events (including the Year 5 & 6 plays and the Year 3 & 4 Shakespeare Festival) this year which has raised additional funds and the feedback has been really positive. These new pop-up bars will be continuing for school events in the new school year. Also, our ice cream social returned in July for its second year. Even in the rain, we still managed to sell out!

What a year that was! It won’t be long until we start the cycle all over again with a new addition of Burn’s night.

As a committee we have two main aims: 1) raise funds to help improve the children’s experiences and 2) to run the best events possible for the children and adults.

This year we have worked with the school to buy new lighting and projector for the hall; the very popular table tennis table (thank you again Alex FW for approaching us with this idea); tree climbing equipment; a new guitar amp; leavers hoodies and Easter Eggs. A new addition for the pool has also been ordered, but this won’t be revealed until September! We are currently raising money to help transform the Nursery garden. The work has already started and we can’t wait to see the changes!

Personally, this year has been hard work - eye opening, sometimes tiring but always an incredible amount of fun. It has filled me with so many ideas of how to improve each event going forward. Thank you to everyone who has helped or attended our events. These cannot happen without the help of the committee, our volunteers, all donations we receive and our community supporting us fully. New ideas and new committee members help us to go from strength to strength. Lastly, I would like to express FOTM’s deepest thanks to Rachel Woodhouse and Caron Ricciardi for all their help on the committee over the last five years as trustees and for many years before as committee members. Your help and guidance has been invaluable to us all and especially me over the last year.

His visit to us in March had staff in stitches as he regaled us with tales and songs from his time here as Head of English, editor of the Tockingtonian and as a sports coach.We especially Pippa Mason visited us in January appreciated his tie! before heading off to further her career in construction law in Abu Dhabi.Pippa left her mark on our Honours Board before she left in 2001 and even has an award named after her.

It was wonderful to see a brilliant turnout of OTs at the end of our school year to bid farewell to Mr Jones as he retired from his 37 years at Tockington.

To say he has had an impact on the school and the many pupils who have been taught or coached by him during his time here would be an understatement.

Thank you to the many past pupils and parents who spent a gorgeous summer evening with us to celebrate Mr Jones' contribution to the school and the mark he leaves on it. We are also grateful for all the contributions which allowed us to present him with a memorable leaving gift: a globe bar with a personalised inscription. Farewell JJ!
