Australian Chamber Orchestra

April 20, 2023

We live and work on the traditional territory of Haudenosaunee-speaking nations, including the Huron-Wendat, Seneca, and Mohawk. Haudenosauneespeaking nations have been here since time immemorial, and were more recently joined by the Mississaugas of the Credit.
This place has many Indigenous ports, including where the Humber and Rouge rivers meet other waterways such as Lake Ontario. Ancient longhouses— typical Haudenosaunee housing structures—have been found along both these rivers and in the north of Toronto near modern-day York University. This territory is covered by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations) Confederacy and the Anishnaabe (Ojibwe) and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the lands and the relationships around the Great Lakes.
What this means is that by living and working here, we all have a responsibility to the environment and to each other, to treat each other and the environment with peace and respect. This means we have responsibilities to honour, renew, and consistently uphold the values and relationships outlined in the ancient agreements.
Today, Toronto is home to Indigenous peoples and settlers from around the world. Let us all come together in an atmosphere of respect and peace to do good work together with good minds. Let’s start building stronger and healthier relationships with each other and the spaces we inhabit in Tkaronto, Ontari:io, Kanata.
Let’s hold our minds together in kindness. Nia:wen. Thank you.
© Dawn MaracleTonight we welcome the Australian Chamber Orchestra back to Toronto after a 10-year break. In the intervening years, their reputation for outstanding performances and distinctive programming has continued to grow around the world, and we are exceptionally proud to be presenting them for you this evening.
Led by Artistic Director Richard Tognetti, tonight’s concert features the ACO musicians with guest soloist didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton performing two of his own works.
A descendant of the Kalkadunga people who was taught the instrument by his uncle, an Aboriginal elder, William Barton is widely recognized as one of Australia's leading didgeridoo players and composers and is a powerful advocate for the greater appreciation of his cultural traditions. In a recent The Globe & Mail interview, Mr. Barton says “There is no reason my—or others’—music cannot be recognized as serious music. I see my work as journey music: I am carrying the legacy of 40,000 years on my shoulders.”
Richard Tognetti is known for his intelligent and bold program curation, often juxtaposing surprising works together to create a complex, inspiring, and deeply satisfying experience for the ensemble’s audiences. Tonight’s concert is no exception, and we invite you to absorb yourselves in the extraordinary musicianship of these highly talented players.
Compounding the impact is that nearly all ACO musicians play on Golden Age instruments of historical significance. From Mr. Tognetti’s 1743 Guarneri del Gesu violin to others carrying the illustrious names of Stradivarius, Guadagnini, and others, the ACO musicians play on some of the finest instruments in the world, made possible through the generosity of private benefactors and key patron support. A truly historic initiative.
You’re in for a very special night; thank you for joining us.
Welcome to the Australian Chamber Orchestra—we could not be more delighted to join you in TO Live’s spectacular George Weston Recital Hall this evening.
We have not visited Toronto since 2012 and were thrilled to be invited to return during this visit to North America from our home in Sydney’s Walsh Bay. Tonight, the ACO’s Artistic Director Richard Tognetti and the Orchestra will perform for you an exhilarating program pulled together from across the world, from the soaring sounds of Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings,” to the entrancing music of Bryce Dessner and Ruth Crawford Seeger to Australia’s own didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton. We are honoured to have William, a regular ACO collaborator and great friend of the Orchestra, join us onstage to perform his music on didgeridoo, guitar, and vocals.
The ACO is passionate about new arrangements and commissions. At this concert you will experience a brand-new piece for electric violin, “Echo Transcriptions,” written especially for Richard Tognetti by the wonderful Californian composer Samuel Adams in a joint commission with our friends at Stanford Live in Palo Alto. It is an extraordinary work, rich, colourful, and complex, and we are delighted that you will experience its Canadian premiere this evening.
On behalf of Richard Tognetti and our ACO colleagues, thank you so much for joining us. I hope you enjoy the performance.

The Australian Chamber Orchestra lives and breathes music, making waves around the world for its explosive performances and brave interpretations. Steeped in history but always looking to the future, ACO programs embrace celebrated classics alongside new commissions, and adventurous cross-artform collaborations.
Led by Artistic Director Richard Tognetti since 1990, the ACO performs more than 100 concerts each year. Whether performing in Manhattan, New York, or Wollongong, NSW, the ACO is unwavering in its commitment to creating transformative musical experiences.
The Orchestra regularly collaborates with artists and musicians who share its ideology: from Emmanuel Pahud, Steven Isserlis, Dawn Upshaw, Olli Mustonen, Brett Dean, and Ivry Gitlis, to Neil Finn, Jonny Greenwood, Barry Humphries, and Meow Meow; to visual artists and filmmakers such as Bill Henson, Shaun Tan, Jon Frank, and Jennifer Peedom, who have co-created unique, hybrid productions for which the ACO has become renowned.
In addition to its national and international touring schedule, the Orchestra has an active recording program across CD, vinyl, and digital formats. Recent releases include Water | Night Music, the first Australian-produced classical vinyl for two decades, and the soundtracks to the acclaimed cinematic collaborations, Mountain and River. In 2020, the ACO launched its inaugural digital subscription ACO StudioCasts, a critically acclaimed award-winning season of cinematic and immersive concert films.

Richard Tognetti is artistic director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and lead violin. He has established an international reputation for his compelling performances and artistic individualism. Richard began his studies in his hometown of Wollongong with William Primrose, then with Alice Waten at the Sydney Conservatorium, and Igor Ozim at the Bern Conservatory, where he was awarded the Tschumi Prize as the top graduate soloist in 1989. Later that year he led several performances of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and that November was appointed as the Orchestra’s lead violin and, subsequently, artistic director.
Richard performs on period, modern, and electric instruments and his numerous arrangements, compositions, and transcriptions have expanded the chamber orchestra repertoire and been performed throughout the world. Richard was the co-composer of the score for Peter Weir’s film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, starring Russell Crowe; co-composed the soundtrack to Tom Carroll’s surf film Storm Surfers; and created The Red Tree, a musical work inspired by Shaun Tan’s book of the same name. He also created the documentary film Musica Surfica, as well as The Glide, The Reef, and The Crowd. He holds honorary doctorates from three Australian universities and was made a National Living Treasure in 1999.
For two decades, William Barton has forged a peerless profile as a performer and composer in the classical musical world, from the Philharmonic Orchestras of London and Berlin to historic events at Westminster Abbey for Commonwealth Day 2019, Anzac Cove, and the Beijing Olympics. His awards include winner of best original score for a mainstage production at the 2018 Sydney Theatre Awards and winner of best classical album with ARIA for Birdsong At Dusk in 2012. With his prodigious musicality and the quiet conviction of his Kalkadunga heritage, he has vastly expanded the horizons of the didgeridoo—and the culture and landscape that it represents.
Today he holds honorary doctorate degrees from the Universities of Griffith and Sydney, has released five albums on the ABC Classics label and is an artist in residence at Melbourne Recital Centre. His most recent album, Kalkadungu: music for didjeridu and orchestra, features predominantly his own compositions, alongside those of Delmae and Peter Sculthorpe.
Tonight, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and guest soloist didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton are playing a mix of new compositions and pieces from the classical repertoire. Listen to songs from this beautiful program plus other pieces by the Orchestra and William Barton anytime you want by adding the TO Live show playlist to your Spotify account.
We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of our Friends of TO Live Community through donations to TO Live and the TO Live Foundation.
