to start in cold weather, if it starts at all. It may run rough and lose power. Have fuel, ignition and emission control systems checked, necessary components replaced and adjustments made. Battery and electrical system How old is your battery? If it’s three or more years old, it should be tested and replaced if necessary. Even a strong battery that can deliver full power at 80 degrees F. will have dropped to 65 percent of its output at freezing temperature and only 40 percent at zero degrees. Clean and tighten battery terminals, as loose or corroded connections can cause symptoms of a weak or dead battery. Oil and filter Change both as recommended in the owner’s manual, generally at 3,000mile intervals for severe conditions and cold weather operation, espe-

cially when most driving is stop-andgo traffic. Check the owner’s manual for more information on severe service or refer to Car Care Council’s Service Interval Schedule. Visibility Replace old wiper blades and be sure your washers are working. Carry spare washer solvent in your vehicle. Cooling system A vehicle’s antifreeze should be changed annually, or as recommended in the owner’s manual. Flush the cooling system every 24 months. The recommended mixture is 50/50 antifreeze and distilled water. Have the system pressure tested for leaks and check hoses and drive belt(s) for tension and condition. Tires Inspect, balance, check inflation and rotate tires. Check inflation on the spare and make sure the jack is in place.

Cabin air filters clean the incoming air and remove allergens - especially beneficial to people who suffer from allergies. If your vehicle is model year 2000 or newer, there’s a good chance it is equipped with a cabin air filter. “There are about 30 million vehicles in North America that currently have cabin air filters,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. “However, most people have never heard of a cabin air filter or don’t know if their vehicle is equipped with one. Vehicle owners should refer to their owners’ manuals for this information.” If the cabin air filter is not replaced, it can cause musty odors in the vehicle, and over time, the heater and air conditioner may become damaged by corrosion. A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can also cause containments to become so concentrated in the cabin that passengers actually breathe in more fumes and particles when riding in the car compared

to walking down the street.

Proper Washing And Waxing Add Value To Vehicle More than one-third of car owners use damaging non-automotive products when washing their cars-products that could contain harmful detergents, abrasives and additives. And almost half of motorists don’t ever wax their vehicles. “Waxing at least twice a year is recommended for maximum protection, yet surveys show that 48 percent of motorists don’t wax their vehicles at all,” said Jeffrey Webb, director of retail marketing at Turtle Wax, Inc. Motorists should avoid dish detergent, which contains harsh chemicals that, intended to cut through grease, will strip away the wax finish on your car. Some are hard to rinse off and leave streaks. For best results, a formulated automotive wash is recommended, one that gently lifts the dirt and grime while protecting the finish. Washing an automobile on a regular basis protects it from the natural elements that harm the finish. The Car Care Council recommends the following dos and don’ts when it comes to a do-it-yourself car wash: • Don’t wash cars in direct sunlight. Do wash cars in shade or in cooler temperatures in the early morning or late afternoon. • Don’t use dish detergent. Do use a formulated car wash. • Do fill your bucket with warm water. • Do use a soft terrycloth towel or washing mitt. • Do spray the car often with water. • Don’t scrub the car all at once. Do complete one section at a time, rinsing repeatedly to prevent the soap from drying on the paint. • Do use soft terrycloth towels or scratch-free fabric to dry the vehicle. • Don’t neglect waxing the vehicle. Do prep the car for waxing using cleaner/polish to remove contaminants. “The myth of not having to wax your car because you have a clear-coat finish is just that, a myth,” Webb said. “Clear-coat finish is only as thick as a piece of paper and can become damaged from the effects of sunlight, UV radiation, acid rain, salt, dirt and air pollution.”

Consumers Can Avoid Problems by Watching for Warning Signs When it comes to your car’s safety, brakes top the list of systems that need monitoring. However, many people are unaware of the signs that indicate a car’s brakes may need maintenance or repair. When it comes to your car’s safety, brakes top the list of systems that need monitoring. However, many people are unaware of the signs that indicate a car’s brakes may need maintenance or repair. For routine maintenance, it’s important to check the vehicle’s braking system at least once a year. A thorough inspection should include brake lining wear, brake fluid level, rotor thickness, condition of hoses and brake lines, brake and dash warning lights, as well as taking the car for a test drive to detect other potential brake system problems. Check out this brake system diagram to better understand how the braking system works. It is important to be alert and recognize the danger signs of brake problems. Other warning signs include an illuminated brake warning light, brake grab-

bing, low pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel and squealing. “Sometimes it’s only a few miles between a soft brake pedal and a pedal that goes clear to the floor,” said Stephen Powell, NAPA/ASE Technician of the Year and owner of Thoroughbred Transmissions & AutoCare, Inc. in Laurel, Md. “But consumers easily can protect themselves from brake failure by watching and listening for a few simple clues.” Powell says noise is one of the leading indicators that something is awry with brakes. “Any out of the ordinary sound is often a sign that brakes have worn to the point they should be checked,” he said. “Watch especially for a grinding noise, and if your brakes typically throw off brake dust on your wheels, look for a sudden increase or decrease in dust.” He added that finding small metal flakes on the wheels is also a sign that brakes should be checked. Another leading indicator is the feel of the brake pedal, Powell said. If the car pulls left or right when braking, or if the

front end shakes, those are both signs of excessive brake wear. If the brake pedal begins to feel spongy, it could be a sign that air has entered the brake system or fluid is low. “A mushy brake pedal, along with a decrease in brake fluid, could also indicate brake wear,” Powell added. “Check the brake fluid reservoir to make sure it’s topped off. If not, then brake fluid is likely remaining at the wheel to fill the space caused by wear.” Many cars now have ABS (Automatic Braking System) that initiates a rapid- fire pumping sequence to the brakes to keep the car straight during sudden or hard braking. “If the ABS light illuminates on your instrument panel, then it’s likely that the wheel sensors have detected excessive build-up of metal particles from the brake system,” Powell said. “Most cars are designed to shut down the ABS when excessive particle build-up occurs.” Powell added that a shutdown ABS does not prevent you from stopping, just that the ABS feature isn’t working.

Other tips: Wheels should be pulled and brakes checked once a year by an ASE- Certified technician. “It’s not uncommon to replace brakes after 12,000-15,000 miles,” Powell explained. An inspection typically includes the rotors, calipers, drums, pads, pistons and brake lines. Brake systems should be flushed and brake fluid replaced every two years. “Brake fluid absorbs moisture in the system and becomes acidic after two years or 30,000 miles,” Powell said. Check your owner’s manual or ask your ASE-Certified technician to see what kind of brakes your car has and how they are adjusted. For example, most drum brakes are self-adjusting by backing up or engaging the emergency brake. Regardless of care, brakes should most likely be replaced every 20,00030,000 miles. “Of course, how and where someone drives will greatly influence when brakes should be replaced,” Powell emphasized.

Fuel Savings Tips as Gas Prices Soar With gas prices exceeding three dollars a gallon in many parts of the country, the Car Care Council is offering gas-saving maintenance and driving tips that really work.Record Gas Prices Make it Perfect Time to “Be Car Care Aware” With gas prices exceeding two dollars a gallon in many parts of the country, the Car Care Council is offering gas-saving maintenance and driving tips that really work. “Millions of dollars worth of gasoline is wasted every day by motorists, because simple and inexpensive vehicle maintenance is neglected,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. “Loose or missing gas caps, under-inflated tires, worn spark plugs and dirty air filters all contribute to poor fuel economy.” The Car Care Council offers these fuel-saving tips: Vehicle gas caps – About 17 percent of the vehicles on the roads have gas caps that are either damaged, loose or are missing altogether, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year. Under inflated tires – When tires aren’t inflated properly it’s like driving with the parking brake on and can cost a mile or two per gallon. Worn spark plugs – A vehicle can have either four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as 3 mil-

lion times every 1,000 miles, resulting in a lot of heat and electrical and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug causes misfiring, which wastes fuel. Spark plugs need to be replaced regularly. Dirty air filters – An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a “rich” mixture – too much gas being burned for the amount of air, which wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent, saving about 15 cents a gallon. Fuel-saving driving tips include: Don’t be an aggressive driver – Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent on city streets, which results in 7 to 49 cents per gallon. Avoid excessive idling – Sitting idle gets zero miles per gallon. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient. Observe the speed limit – Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each mph driven over 60 will result in an additional 10 cents per gallon.
