RUANG SUSUN:

Unfolding the Hidden Stories of Mangga Besar PROJECT DESCRIPTION Location: Mangga Besar Raya Street, West Jakarta Project Type: Urban Interiority Design Research-based Design Role: Designer Level of Project: Academic Project Interior Architectural Design 4 Ruang Susun addresses the issue of locality and cultural identity in the neighborhood of Mangga Besar, Jakarta. It employs behavorial and spatial mapping in investigating the unseen sociocultural issues and reveal the pre-existing stories that might affected the quality of spatial experiences in the context. This project questions the conventional rigid and high performative space in urban realm and explores the ephemeral aspects of the interior to respond to the dynamic needs of the inhabitants. The solution generated from the issue is providing an urban interior setting that would accommodate all types of entertainment activities to claim back the image of the site as Jakarta’s entertainment hub. By studying the operation of how the street vendors organize and reorganize their stalls, the project suggest a transformative setting which produce various forms of design that depends on the time, location, and demands of the inhabitants. SIXTH SENSE:

Embracing the Depth of Fear in Transit Area PROJECT DESCRIPTION Location: Gambir Central Station, Central Jakarta Project Type: Narrative Design Research-based Design Insertion Design Role: Designer Level of Project: Academic Project Interior Architectural Design 5 Fear and joy are only one adventure and excitement away. Fear is often perceived as something that needed to be eradicated. It lies beneath our experiences and hidden in another side of our stories. It follows us in our journey in transit space. De Botton (2002) explained that one of the significant part in our journey is to plan ahead and anticipating almost every single scenario in our head, including the preparation to avoid criminalities that emerged from the memory of fear in our mind. Gambir is known as the largest train-transit station in Jakarta. It becomes a place a static experience, while on the other hand, it provides many uncertainties to counter the ‘plans’ and ‘stillness’ of its users. The main idea of this project is to embrace and respect fear as part of our life that makes our life exciting & joyful, rather than ignore or eradicate them. It aims to ask what if humanity is not limited by their senses and able to use their fear as a driver for transformation. The strategy is to re-write their journey by exploring and narrating the uncertainty that lie beneath the station and finally turns it into an adventurous experience.

/afk: AWAY FROM KEYBOARD PROJECT DESCRIPTION Location: UI Hospital, Depok, West Java Project Type: Health-based Design Research-based Design Intervention Design Role: Designer Level of Project: Academic Project Interior Architectural Design 3 /afk is a health facility specially designed to provide gamers a place to PLAY and HEAL. The challenge is to ellaborate design and technology to prevent them from suffering digital eye strain and body disease in order to achieve their wellbeing. Along with the proposed ‘active’ program, this project utilizes diffraction film as well as reflective and angled surface to trigger the movement of the eye and body. Structure intervention also plays a significant role in the triggering process as it allows the opportunity to manipulate the light and shadow in the building that act as the distractors for the vision and body. REHABILITATON OF HELICOPTER TOILET: Empowering Informality, Sustaining the Community

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Location: RT05 of Kampong Cikini Kramat, Central Jakarta Project Type: Urban Acupunture Design Participatory Design Community Engagement Health-based Design Status: In Construction Role: Designer & Project Leader Level of Project: Professional Project Universitas Indonesia Helicopter Toilet is a term developed by the marginalized informal communities of the Kampong Cikini to describe the type of toilet that floats above a river. The existence of this toilet causes not only health and environmental problems due to the practice of open defecation into the river, it also becomes a den for drug users and criminal acts. The rehabilitation program seeks to improve this sanitation facility as a solution for the environmental and social issues through the arrangement of access, privacy, material, and the toilet position. Along with the local participation, this project focused on exploring the limitations of the context to achieve the integration between the design and its environment.

Selected to be Displayed on Green, Green, and Tropical Exhibition by ARCHI-DEPOT Museum, Japan | February - June 2019. 41

24 KARAT MAZI(N)C: The Search for Beauty in Imperfection PROJECT DESCRIPTION Project Type: Material Exploration Role: Designer Level of Project: Academic Project Building Technology 3 This project is an attempt to seek the value of the overlooked quality possessed by metal― Rust (in Indonesian: KARAT). Multiple sheets of unused zinc-coated steel is utilized for the experiment. The process involves accelerated corrosion with the help of vinegar (CH3COOH) and bleach (NaOCl, NaOH, H2O2, and Ca(ClO)2). The role of the acids is to speed up the rate of chemical reaction and thus will rust the metal rapidly and releasing gas containing zinc and ferro substances into the air. While the texture of the metal is composed of the deteoriated layer of zinc and steel, the pattern is a result of manually dyeing, lubricating, and splatting the acids with different modes of pressure on the zinc surface. Such method provides the ability to produce many possible, beautiful, and diverse patterns. The order of dyeing the metal will affect the color outcome as the plate that get dyed with bleach firstly will generate redder colors rather than the vinegar dyed plate. The form of the plate is inspired by the chemical molecular structure which is often depicted hexagonally. Further design exploration is needed to enhance the potential use of this experimentation, such as in facade, flooring, and installations.

MATERIALSCAPE:

Small Things that Matters PROJECT DESCRIPTION Location: Satellite Clinic Universitas Indonesia, Depok, West Java Project Type: Material Performance Health-based Research Role: Surveyor Leader Level of Project: Research Project Research & Design Cluster, Department of Architecture, Universitas Indonesia In respond to how material is widely considered as complementary element of design, this research seek to raise the importance of material role particularly in addressing issues about hygiene and infection control in healthcare facilities. Several methods including counting, behaviour reasoning, and material mapping is employed to observe the relationship between the landscape of material surface and healthcare programme. Touch occurence between material and users, material geometries, spatial transition, configuration, and program become the basis to analyze and indicate the critical areas where the material performance might be necessary to be altered. Selected to be Featured on International Conference on Built Environment and Engineering (IConBEE) 2018 | Exploration of Surface-Programme Relationship as a Basis to Promote Hand Hygiene in Healthcare Waiting Area Setting | Prof. Yandi Andri Yatmo, Prof. Paramita Atmodiwirjo, M.
