Tom Turner – We’re gonna miss you!

07/02/19

We, current owners of The Fannin County Leader, are very sorry for the Turner family’s loss. We are extremely grateful for the friendship we had with Tom. He managed to pass the ownership of The Leader off to us in the most unique way, using his charm and wit to influence his co-investors to see and agree with his goal. He never doubted his plan and his professional assistance has been priceless. Tom’s dedication to the cause for Fannin County to be one of not many counties still publishing a local paper was never ending. He literally stayed up very late and rose very early to work on his plan, determined to succeed. Succeed he did. It is with much gratitude for Tom’s mentoring that we continue to publish The Leader both in his honor and undoubtedly with his blessing. Tom will be missed in the days, weeks and years to come. He always encouraged us to “stay by the stuff” and keep on “Keeping The Leader Local.” Tom truly loved people and he loved Fannin County. Tim, Sharon, Weesie and Connie

We will miss the often and expected drive-bys from this familiar truck at The Leader office on Main.

Citizen Tom

By Newt Cunningham, County Judge

Tom Turner was an exemplary Citizen. He gave more to our community than he took. He put his time and effort into making Fannin County a better place. He will be greatly missed. I was both fortunate and honored to have him as a friend and ally. Although he was

also served on various boards and committees. Those included the Bonham Chamber of Commerce, the Multipurpose Complex, the Industrial Foundation and Bonham School Board. He made a difference. Will we be able to say the same? Let us not forget him or what he stood for. Keep his family and the County in your prayers.

born and raised in South Georgia, he redeemed himself by marrying Tommie Sue, a True Texan, and moving to Bonham, Texas early on. However, he never lost his accent. They were married over fifty years and raised two lovely daughters, April and Rachel. He can be credited with founding the Fannin County Leader, our County’s paper of record. He

Fannin County Commissioners Meeting

• 2026-2027 Proposed Budget Discussions Leads To Yet Another Deadline Meeting Scheduled For Tuesday, September 8, 2026 @ 9:00 a.m. • Conflict Arises Over Need For Executive Session By Tim Meek The Fannin County Commissioners met on Monday, August 31, 2026 at 9:00 AM for a meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with all 4 Commissioners and Judge Cunningham present. Attendance at start of meeting was 11 citizens present with 75 participating on ZOOM. 5. Public Forum. County resident Jason Walker spoke regarding the bid to place a Road Commissioner on the November ballot. ”People have asked me where we’re at on this road commissioner deal. Well, put another one in the loss column for old Newt, because you only needed a little less than 1,200 signatures, what, 10% of who voted? You lost again because you didn’t even get the votes. What does that say? It says that the county residents once again said, that is a horrible idea.” Commissioner Fogelberg spoke in public forum also. “As far as, bad budgets and bad government. I think we had to spend, million dollars for a roof. A million dollars for some concrete that somebody didn’t take care of when it was more like a bad deal for the Justice Center. Instead of a bad deal for the Commissioners Court.” Judge Cunningham also commented “There are things that can’t be disclosed because the law prohibits it. There’s this concept that you don’t want a grand jury being exposed to organized crime, so you end up with all your witnesses disappearing and nobody else willing to come in and talk. There are rules that are in place. Wait and see how this plays out. The truth will out.” Commissioner Self then asked “But who’s part of the organized crime? No comment?” Cunningham responded “We’re in public forum, you’re not gonna get a comment.” ROUTINE ITEMS: 6. Approve payment of bills – County Auditor. Approved 7. Approve minutes of previous meeting(s) County Clerk. Approved DISCUSSION ONLY ITEMS: 8. Discussion regarding Internal Audit Report of Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1 – County Auditor. It has Bois 'd Arc posts going up the side and across the bottom of it, and yellow roses climbing those posts.” DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ITEMS: 10. Discussion and possible action to approve Proclamation stating September 26, 2026 as Walk 4 Hope Day in Fannin County – County Judge for Jennifer Grisham, Community Well Texas. Approved 11. Fannin County roads and water issues – County Judge EXECUTIVE SESSION(S) AND ACTION IF NEEDED: Judge Cunningham commented regarding a need Executive Session “As I understand the law and the conflicts. We cannot have an executive session to discuss anything to do with the lawsuit. We don’t have an attorney at this time who can discuss it with the Commissioners Court. I’m not gonna go into the law, I’m just telling you that our DA is conflicted. We have people on the court who are on the other side. It’s not in the county’s interest to have everybody together, so I think we’re in a position now where we’re gonna have to wait for some of this to work its way out, and we’re going to end up with, an attorney being hired to come in and tell the court where it finds itself, to tell the court who’s not supposed to participate.” Commissioner Waggoner asked “The three of us that are not involved in that should be able to go in an executive session to see about hiring somebody? Alicia Whipple asked “How do those three choose an attorney if they can’t meet...” Cunningham responded “The attorney’s going to be chosen by the district attorney’s office. We’ve got more than the county involved here.” Alicia responded “Is that not a conflict with the district attorney being named on the suit as well?” Waggoner asked “What if we don’t agree with that decision?” Cunningham then said “I’m afraid you’re being told by your attorneys that you can’t.” Waggoner responded “You’re not my attorney.” Cunningham responded “I’m the judge, and the judge is telling you that you can’t as I interpret the law. And I’m gonna sit here, Mr. Waggoner, ask you a simple question. What do you know about money that’s gonna be paid from the county to Mr. Self for the damages he suffered? Has he talked to you about that? Has his attorney, Mr. Shaw, talked to you about that?”

Waggoner responded “I have never talked to either one of them about anything like that. You can make all the allegations you want to.” Commissioner Fogelberg asked “What’s it gonna cost to keep you out of jail? For us?” Cunningham responded “It’s not gonna cost you anything, sir, I assure you.” Fogelberg followed up “Well, why do we have to put up money, then?” Judge responded “You’re gonna have to hire an attorney to represent the state and the county, because there are laws out there that protect people who testify to grand juries, and there is a standing law for the Supreme Court of the United States that grand jury information is not to be provided to anyone like yourselves. We’re gonna have an attorney come in that is going to be selected, and you can talk to him” Waggoner responded “I don’t want nobody selected until we interview.” The Judge said in response “Well, the problem is this, gentlemen. You have all been, involved in a political potlatch. And that has affected your decisionmaking ability, and we have the state involved in this. And the state is going to have a say in whether or not grand jurors are protected. And whether or not their attorney, Richard Glaser, who was acting for the state, is protected. You’re going to find out that the state doesn’t agree with Mr. Shaw. (Commissioner Self’s Attorney) And it’ll go through the judicial process. We’re going to have a hearing here on the 202. Let’s see where that goes.” Commissioner Self responded “Let’s… let’s hear it. Where’s the mafia? Where’s all this stuff?

6/3/25 As September 11th is approaching, I cannot help but think back to 25 years ago. I was 6.5 months pregnant with my first born. The event was so life changing I can remember down to the exact clothes I was wearing and the road I was driving on. The catastrophic loss of life led us to church that very night. The land of the free was under attack and we turned to God for answers. It made us face our own mortality. I have never looked at life the same. For some it was a flight to Disney, for others they were headed into the office. One thing September 11th has taught the world is that we are not promised tomorrow and death is no respecter of persons.

your testimony has come to light. An independent district attorney’s office, without a dog in the fight, reviewed everything. They said there’s not even any probable cause that anything happened.” The Judge then brought up the Commissioners continuing in walking quorums and Commissioner Self said “It’s your job to report it if you know it’s happening, so report it. Where’s your evidence? It’s another false accusation. That’s all you do is sit up here and lie. And I’m tired of it.” Judge responded “Well, I’m glad you’re tired of it. Maybe you’ll resign.” Self responded “No, I sure won’t, because there is no way in hell I’ll let you appoint my position.” With tempers flaring a motion was made by Commissioner Fogelberg to go into recess. Judge. After a hour and half of an honorable attempt to balance the budget a motion was made by Commissioner Fogelberg to take the deficit of $860,786.00 from the reserves. The vote was a tie with Commissioners Waggoner and Fogelberg voting yes, Commissioner Self abstained and Commissioner Kopf and the Judge voting nay. So the vote was tied. A second vote was held with the same results. Alicia Whipple reminded the Court “the budget is planned to be adopted on the 15th, and if y’all don’t adopt it, we go back to last year’s budget.” Adjourn

ricotta, Pecorino Romano, basil, and garlic. Season with ½ tsp. salt and ¼ tsp black pepper. Mix with a wooden spoon or fork. With the cooked zucchini strip laid flat, spoon 1-2 Tbsp. of the ricotta filling down the center length and roll up gently, tight as you can. Repeat with the remaining strips and filling. Place the rolls seam-side down over the marinara in the baking dish, in a single layer. Pour the remaining marinara over the top and sprinkle evenly with the mozzarella. If you have any leftover filling, dollop on top by the spoonfuls, if desired. Why waste it? Bake for 20 minutes. Cheese should be melted and getting golden; pierce the rolls in a couple places with a fork or sharp knife. It should give easily. If there's resistance, add three more minutes in the oven. ENJOY!!! This recipe has tender grilled zucchini strips rolled around a creamy ricotta, Pecorino, and basil filling, then baked in marinara and melted mozzarella. A lighter, low-carb take on lasagna-style comfort food. Also, this is a good way to use your zucchini right now from the garden!

Preheat the oven to 375°. Lightly grease a 9x13 baking dish. Pour about half of the marinara sauce into the bottom, spreading it evenly to create a base. Wash and trim the ends of the zucchini. Using a mandoline or a sharp knife, slice lengthwise into thin strips, about ⅛ to ¼ inch thick. Lay the slices on paper towels, sprinkle lightly with salt, and let sit 10 minutes to draw out moisture. Blot dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towel. Lightly brush the zucchini slices with olive oil and season with a pinch of salt and a couple turns of pepper. Over medium high heat, set a grill pan or large skillet. Cook about 1-2 minutes per side, until just enough so the slices are flexible for rolling. Set aside to cool slightly on a large cutting board. In a large bowl, combine the egg,

By Rich Hilliard

Leonard 2022 alum DJ Brown began his University of Central Missouri football career on Aug. 27 with a game-high 163 yds on 18 attempts including two touchdown runs. Brown's effort occurred during the Mules' season opener at sixth-ranked Colorado State University at Pueblo. The 5-11 205 fifth-year running back had touchdown runs of 18 and five yards. During his previous two seasons for Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Brown, a second-team All-Great American Conference football selection in 2023 and third-team recipient in 2024, totaled 1,455 rushing yards and seven touchdowns via 320 attempts. He had rushed 44 times for 138 yards, including three touchdowns in as many games in 2025, before sustaining a completely torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of a thumb and other tendon damage that truncated his season.

Dodd City 2023 alumna Lindsey Mauppin returns for her senior season of women's cross country at East Central University in Ada, Okla. Her first month will include competition on Saturday, Sept. 19, in Joplin, Mo., in the Southern Stampede, after Friday, Sept. 4, in Lawton, Okla., in the Aggie Duels. These meets start preparations for the Great American Conference championships on Saturday, Nov. 7, in Enid, Okla. BONHAM -- Michelle Rodriguez's previous two stints as Bonham's head volleyball coach have had at least one thing in common: postseason trips. Seniors Jewyll Hemby, a first-team all-district recipient in 2025, Parker Patton, a secondteam selection, and honorable mention Katy Harrison head a mostly veteran varsity roster, as Rodriguez starts her third stint as Bonham's head coach. The Lady Warriors this season also have Brekel Dunlap -whose play has kept the freshman in the rotation for Bonham's

varsity since its season opener. Last fall, the Lady Warriors (1-9 in 144A) contended for a postseason berth into the next-to-last district match. Bonham remains in 14-4A with Paris, North Lamar, Pittsburg, Sulphur Springs and Texarkana Pleasant Grove for the next two seasons. The Lady Warriors will play host to Pittsburg on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to begin district play. A postseason trip in 2026 would equate Bonham's first since Rodriguez coached the Lady Warriors in 2019 to a regional quarterfinals appearance.

Fannin County Witnesses to History: Roy David McMillan

children, was born in Fannin County, TX, on July 17, 1929. At Bonham High School, he played football, tennis, basketball, and track, and played softball on a city team that won a city championship in 1946. Bonham High did not have a baseball team at the time. After attending Texas A&M University for one semester, he returned to Bonham and attended a Cincinnati Reds tryout camp in McKinney, TX, in 1947. He played minor league baseball and then made his major league debut as a shortstop with the Cincinnati Reds on April 16, 1951 at the age of 21. Roy became known for his defensive play. He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated on

Image from Handbook of Texas Online September 9, 1957, and one of his many nicknames was “Mr. Shortstop.” He played for the Reds until 1961.

From 1961–1964, he played for the Milwaukee Braves and then the New York Mets from 1964–1966. Roy then pursued a coaching career in the minor leagues until 1970 when he coached with the Milwaukee Brewers from 1970–1972 and the Mets from 1973–1976, and he briefly managed both teams while he coached them. He continued managing minor league teams for the Minnesota Twins from 1977–1980 before becoming a scout in Texas for the Montreal Expos from 1982– 1997. Roy was involved with baseball for 50 years. He received three Gold Gloves and played in two All Star games during his career. He was a member of the Professional Baseball Players Association and an inductee to the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame, the Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame and the Fannin County Sports Hall of Fame. He married Jody Lawrence on October 26, 1952, and the couple had three chil-

dren. Roy passed away from a heart attack in Bonham on November 2, 1997, and is buried in Willow Wild Cemetery. According to Roy’s obituary in the Dallas Morning News, “a sportswriter called him an example of an ‘all-field, no-hit player.’ Steve Pate wrote that despite his low batting average "if fielding a baseball is an art, McMillan was a Picasso." At the time of his death, he held the Reds' team record for the shortstop with the most double plays, 129 in 1954, in a single season. More Information on his remarkable career is at the Handbook of Texas Online. Information was also obtained from the Fannin Co., Texas GenWeb ( txfannin.org ) and other online sources. The Sam Rayburn House SHS featured Roy McMillan at their 2024 Cemetery Willow Wild Walking Tour, An Athletic Cemetery Walk. Rich Beyond Measure

Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas This last weekend was Labor Day Weekend. For me, it is much more than the signal for the end of summer. It always makes me think about the work ethic of my mom and dad. My dad worked for the Wichita County Road Department for 42 years. Most of that time, he was the foreman. When he started, all of the county roads were dirt. By the time he retired in 1991, every one of them were paved. I never will forget the summer days when they were laying asphalt. He would leave before the sun came up and get home way after dark, smelling of tar. My mother was a school bus driver for 25 years. In fact, she drove my school bus throughout my Elementary and Junior High School years. My previous school bus driver was never on time, so she just went

down and got his job when he was fired. She was never late. I could set my clock by her arrival. Also, everybody knew there would be no nonsense on her bus. She would never hesitate to pull it over to set things right. We were probably classified by society as “lower middle class.” As far as I was concerned, we were rich beyond measure. I thank God for their work

ethic they instilled into me. Would you pause and thank God for your job today. If you don’t have one, I pray you find one very soon. As a church family, we have many different kinds of jobs but we all have one vocation – one calling – and that is to glorify God by making disciples for Jesus Christ. Is Celebrate Recovery For Me?

Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself: • Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others? • Is there something I wish I could live without? • Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control? • Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed? Yield Not to Temptation 6/2/20

Hello everyone! This week’s devotion comes from James 1:13-18 and 1 Corinthians 10:12-13. We are reminded that we are not tempted by God, and that God cannot be tempted with evil. God also is not tempted by any man. Our temptations stem from our own desires. These desires can not only entice us, but can also take our minds off of serving the Lord the way that He would have us to. James also reminds us that sin begins in the heart, and that when we allow ourselves to get distracted by our desires, it is indeed sin. Fortunately, we have a line of defense against temptation. In 1 Corinthians 10:12-13, we are commanded to avoid sin at all costs, and to never make the assumption that salvation makes us immune to earthly

consequences of our behavior. This is also a warning to those who are careless, or arrogant, about their standing in the sight of Jesus Christ. There is no doubt that we will all face temptation in our lives. Sometimes our desire to give in to temptation can feel more powerful than our desire to do what is right in the sight of the Lord. James 1:13 reassures us that overcoming any temptation is possible. The apostle Paul points out 3 things in this verse. First, none of us are uniquely tempted by sin. We are just as much subject to temptation as those before us, with us now, or after us. Secondly, our God is still for us. He loves us, and He is not waiting for us to fail. He helps us by actively working in our lives to keep us from being tempted beyond what we can resist. Lastly, we

see the promise that God will always make a way to escape the temptation we face. He works to help us, as believers, to desire to do what is right. It is not wise to reject God’s help in overcoming temptation. In 1868, Horatio Richmond Palmer wrote this classic hymn that comes from the message in James 1:13-18. “Yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin. Each vict’ry will help you some other to win. Fight valiantly onward; dark passions subdue. Look ever to Jesus; He’ll carry you through. Ask the Savior to help you, comfort, strengthen, and keep you. He is willing to aid you; He will carry you through.” Bro. Josh Stevenson

What The Church Of Christ Does Not Have

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

Many think about what they want the church to have. We notice what the church of Christ does not have. The church of the Bible does not have a humanly devised name. Paul told Christians in Rome that “the churches of Christ salute you” (Romans 16:16). The church is described as “the church of God” (1 Corinthians 1:2). Peter said that “Jesus Christ” “is become the head” and that “neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:10-12). The church that belongs to Christ does not have a manmade creed. Jesus said “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things

whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:18-20). Paul wrote that “all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). Christians in Philippi were instructed to “walk by the same rule” and “mind the same thing” (Philippians 3:16). The church of the Bible does not have human requirements for membership. Jesus said, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved” (Mark 16:16). Luke recorded Peters response to “what shall we do?” as “repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:37-38). Luke then recorded, “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized” (Acts 2:41). We find after the message was preached and the message was received and obeyed, “the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved” (Acts 2:47). The church that belongs to Christ does not have a cor-

rupted worship. Jesus said “the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23). We find that Christians “continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42). We find that the church met “upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread” (Acts 20:7). The church was told “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Colossians 3:16). Paul wrote about giving, “now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to all the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him” (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). The church of Christ belongs to Christ and follows God’s word.

PSALMS 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Elizabeth Ann “Betty-Ann” Bonica-Otto

Elizabeth Ann “Betty-Ann” Bonica-Otto, 75, of Bonham, Texas, formerly of Newton, Middleboro, and the Wareham/Bourne area of Massachusetts, passed away on August 31, 2026, in Bonham, Texas. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Wise Funeral Home, Bonham, TX. Betty-Ann was born on October 22, 1950, in Waltham, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Stella Lena (Columbo) Bonica and Anthony Salvatore Bonica. She spent much of her earlier life in Newton, Massachusetts. Throughout her life, Betty-Ann wore many hats, but caring for others was a thread that ran through much of what she did. She worked as a preschool teacher and nurse’s aide, and for a time ran a daycare from her home, caring for children and becoming part of the lives of many families along the way. She later worked in loss

prevention at Chadwick’s of Boston. That caretaker instinct extended well beyond her work. Betty-Ann was fiercely independent, rarely asked anyone for help, and was usually far more interested in figuring out what everyone else needed. If she thought someone needed taking care of, she was going to take care of them— whether they asked her to or not. Her family affectionately knew her as their “spicy Italian,” a name that fit her perfectly. BettyAnn had a strong personality, an even stronger opinion, and a way of making her presence known wherever she went. Some of the fondest memories her daughters, Julie and Jillian, have of their childhood are the summer vacations their mother made sure happened every year at White Horse Beach in Plymouth. Those days at the beach became treasured family memories that stayed with them long after childhood ended. Perhaps it was fitting, then, that the ocean remained such an important part of Betty-Ann’s life. In the late 1990s, after both had previously been married, Betty-Ann met Richard “Dicky” Otto. Together, they built a life first in Middleboro and later closer to the Cape in the Wareham and Bourne area. Over the nearly three decades that followed, some of their favorite times were also some of the simplest—beach days, shopping trips, taking in the beautiful views of Cape Cod, and walking together along the Cape Cod Canal. Cape Cod held a special place in Betty-Ann’s heart. She loved being near the ocean, listening to her music, working in her garden, and enjoying the home and life she and Dicky created there. And then there was her kitchen. Sunday mornings meant the smell of her homemade Italian sauce simmering on the stove. Holidays meant her soup and sausage bread, and there always seemed to be something baking for someone. Food was one of the ways Betty-Ann cared for the people around her, and those recipes, smells, and traditions will forever bring her family back to her kitchen. Betty-Ann is survived by her husband, Richard Alan “Dicky” Otto; her daughters, Julie Ann Aubin and her spouse, Christopher John Barber, and Jillian Elizabeth Clark and her spouse, Phillip Lee Clark; her grandchildren, Courtney Aubin, Zachary Aubin, Alan Clark, Tabytha Morgado, Nickolas Morgado, and Leon Clark; and her great-granddaughter, Julia Clark. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Bonica, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and those whose lives she touched throughout the years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stella Lena (Columbo) Bonica and Anthony Salvatore Bonica, and her sisters, Marylou Mariani and Patricia Hill. Though the final chapter of Betty-Ann’s life brought her from Massachusetts to Texas, a piece of her heart always remained near the ocean and the Cape she loved so much. She will be remembered for her independence and determination, her love of music and the beach, her garden, the food she made for the people around her, her instinct to take care of those around her, and, of course, that unmistakable spicy Italian spirit. Her family will carry her forward in Sunday sauce simmering on the stove, sausage bread at the holidays, flowers growing in the garden, music playing a little too loud, summer days at White Horse Beach, and walks beside the water. Those are the places where Betty-Ann will always feel close to home. A charity close to heart is als.org should you desire to donate in memory of Elizabeth.

From an early age, Tom understood the value of hard work. At just 14 years old, he began working on a sharecropper farm, beginning a lifetime defined by determination, ingenuity, and a willingness to work for what he believed in. After graduating from high school, Tom entered the mobile home industry. By the age of 19, he was supervising a team sewing curtains, making fond memories of those early years. He later worked for Detroit Mobile Homes, which brought him to Alabama before he eventually settled in Bonham, Texas, where he became manager of B&L Manufacturing, overseeing the production of steel frames

for mobile homes. Wanting to remain in Bonham while pursuing a new career, Tom embarked on what would become one of his greatest professional adventures: publishing a newspaper. He launched “The Fannin County Special”, initially balancing the new venture with working the night shift at General Cable. He worked on the newspaper by day and at the cable plant by night until the publication became successful enough for him to dedicate himself to it full time. About a year into the venture, Tom met Tommie Sue, a Sulphur Springs native, where the newspaper was printed. The two married on Christmas Eve, 1975, and became not only husband and wife but also partners in the newspaper and in life. Together they raised their two daughters, April and Rachel, while building a business that would become an important part of Fannin County history. Tom and Tommie Sue never forgot the people who supported them during those early years. They remained forever grateful to Travis Currin of Currin’s Menswear; Cindy Burnett’s father; Ann and Loyd Partain of Ben Franklin Store; Jerry Owens of Owens Lumber Co.; and Harold Ashlock of Ashlock Motors, among many others who believed in them and helped them get started. One of Tom’s most remarkable accomplishments came when the local newspaper closed in October 2002. Because The Fannin County Special was a free publication, existing law did not allow it to serve as the official paper of record for the city, schools, or county. County Judge Lovett approached Tom and asked him to pursue a change in the law. Tom took on the challenge. He traveled to Austin and worked with State Representative Larry Phillips and State Representative Mark Homer, along with local leaders including Judge Lovett and Bonham Mayor Carl McEachern, to change the law. Their efforts resulted in legislation passed in 2003, making The Fannin County Special the first free publication in the United States eligible to serve as a paper of record. It was an extraordinary accomplishment that opened doors in the journalism industry. A man from Dallas traveled to Tom’s office simply to shake his hand, telling him that Tom had done the impossible. A newspaper owner from Arizona even contacted him and asked him to come to Arizona to “fix” his struggling newspaper. Tom politely declined. After selling The Fannin County Special in 2005, Tom and Tommie Sue bought a motor home and spent years traveling. Yet people continued to encourage Tom to start another newspaper. Once his non-compete agreement ended, he founded The Fannin County Leader with investors. In 2011, Tom was able to buy back The Fannin County Special, once again making it the paper of record for Fannin County. In 2020, Tom and Tommie Sue sold The Fannin County Leader to its loyal employees and retired. Tom’s commitment to his community extended far beyond journalism. He served on the Bonham ISD School Board during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He served on committees involved in bringing local prisons and the Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans Home to the area. He worked with David Turner and the Industrial Foundation, which donated $200,000 toward moving the community ball fields to Silo Road. Tom also served as President of the Bonham Water Authority Board and as Chairman of the Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce. One of his most treasured accomplishments came when County Judge Derrell Hall asked him to work with Dr. Harrison in helping manage the creation of the Multi-Purpose Complex. In recognition of his many contributions to Bonham and Fannin County, Tom was named the Bonham Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1999. In retirement, Tom and Tommie Sue spent 16 years traveling in their motorhome, enjoying new places and making memories together. They also loved camping locally at Lake Bonham. Above all, Tom cherished time spent with his family. His happiest moments were the gatherings at home, especially holidays filled with laughter, good food, stories, and conversation. Those gatherings, and the love shared around them, are among the greatest parts of the legacy he leaves behind. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Clarice Turner; his sister, Patricia Abbett; his brother-in-law, Gene Abbett; and his granddaughter, Sophia Peterson. Tom is survived by his cherished wife of 51 years, Tommie Sue, daughter, April Peterson, sonin-law, Kevin Peterson, daughter, Rachel Wright, son-in-law, Aaron Wright, grandsons, Vance Thomas Jacobs, Nicholas Ola Peterson, and granddaughter Aylssa Marie Wright. Tom Turner will be remembered for his extraordinary work ethic, his entrepreneurial spirit, his determination to make a difference, and his deep commitment to the community he called home. But most of all, he will be remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend who loved his family and treasured the time they spent together. His legacy lives on in the community he helped shape, the newspapers he built, the people he encouraged, and, most importantly, the family he loved so dearly. A Visitation was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Boyd Baptist Church, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. A Graveside Service was held at 3:00 p.m. at Old Pickton Cemetery, Pickton, Texas. Officiants were Brother Mike Allred and Brother Mark Posey. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Boyd Baptist Church. God’s Garden God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

Beverly Mills Owens, 65 of Bonham, passed away early on the morning of Saturday, August 29, 2026. She was always a very early morning person, so it was only appropriate that she had her morning coffee in Heaven. Beverly was born on January 17, 1961 to Johnnie and Amanda Joyce Mills. She grew up and attended school in Dodd City. She never really had much interest in college, but avidly believed in hard work, which she did all of her life. She also believed in being a loving and dedicated Mom to her daughter Amanda who was born on June 24, 1989. Beverly provided many fond childhood memories for Amanda and her friends throughout school years and beyond. Beverly believed in being a good person and she believed in the goodness of others to a fault. She tended to her father Johnnie and his wife Joy Mills with frequent phone calls and visits just as she did her mother. Blended family was fine with her because her love was given equally. She married Bryan Owens on March 28, 2014 and they shared twelve years together until her passing. She was preceded in death by her older sister Cheryl in 2022. Family night was held from 5-7pm on Monday, August 31, 2026 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home. Graveside services were held at Dodd City Cemetery on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 10:00 am with Pastor Mike Allred officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Teddy Fry, Dale Horton, Mark Kinnard, Garry Mills, Leeman Mills, Jimmy Kirkpatrick, and Bruce Mills. Serving as an honorary pallbearer was Jim Mills. Beverly is lovingly survived by her husband Bryan of the home. Father Johnnie Mills and wife Joy. Mother Amanda Mills. Daughter Amanda Evans and husband Case. Brother Leeman Mills and wife DeeDee, brother Joel Wright and wife Stacey, and brother Mark Wright. Numerous nieces and nephews scattered throughout the country. North Topsoil and subsoil moisture were very short to adequate. Consistent 100-degree days pushed the district 2/5/19 deeper into drought, with a rapid decline in all non-irrigated vegetation, including crops, pastures and trees. Burn bans covered nearly the entire district, and two grass fires, both under 5 acres, broke out in one area. Pond levels fell sharply and stock water sources were drying up quickly. Corn was in good to excellent condition, with soybeans and sorghum fair to good. Corn harvest finished much better than expected, and yields were excellent. Soybean yields were among the best seen in years, though late-planted soybeans were not setting pods. Sorghum also outperformed expectations on the limited acres planted. Pasture and rangeland conditions were very poor to fair, and livestock were in fair to good condition as producers began feeding hay. East Drought conditions worsened, with daily highs in the 100s, overnight lows in the 70s and burn bans still in force. Rainfall was scattered and light, ranging from nothing to about 1 inch in a few locations. Topsoil and subsoil moisture were very short to adequate. Ponds, creeks, lakes and rivers were all low; several stock ponds had dried up, and some producers were hauling water to livestock. There were reports of fish die-offs in stock ponds as water levels dropped and temperatures climbed. Hay production came to a halt in much of the district, and some producers managed only one cutting all season. Most gardens were finished, though some people were preparing fall gardens and food plots. Pasture and rangeland were very poor to good.
