GDS volunteers sort all of the food into equal amounts for the non-profits on Saturday morning, starting at 9:00 am.

GDS volunteers and nonprofit representatives will move the food to the nonprofit sites. Organizations who will be getting a share of the collected food are Fannin County Community Ministries, Fannin County Family Crisis Center, Manna House at Calvary Baptist and the Blessing Box at First Presbyterian will get a smaller share than the rest. There will be a limit of 30 volunteers and priority will be given to BISD staff and students. Students must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Trucks, trailers and SUV’s will be needed to move the food from Bailey Inglish to the nonprofits on Saturday morning. In case of rain, this project will continue.

will ask COVID screening questions of each volunteer and turn away anyone with symptoms. The Site Leader will explain what volunteer work needs to be done, be available for questions and possibly have tools, supplies or equipment (depending on the project.) The Site Leader will maintain the list of names and phone numbers of everyone who comes to that service project site.

Children and youth under age 18 are welcome to volunteer, as long as they have a responsible adult that will stay with them.

At work sites where social distancing is not possible, face coverings or masks that cover the nose and mouth will be required. All service projects sites will start at 9:00 am on Saturday, Oct 10.

Food Drive - Each Bonham ISD campus will host a Food Drive from Sept 28 to Oct 8.

BISD maintenance staff move all the food to Bailey Inglish cafeteria on Friday, Oct 9.

Press Release - Registration is open for Bonham’s tenth annual Great Days of Service.

As with many activities in 2020, there will be adjustments made to this year’s event due to the pandemic. There will not be a large group gathering and breakfast this year. Volunteers will just go directly to their work site at 9 am on Saturday, October 10.

As usual, volunteers are encouraged to sign up soon at www.gdsbonham.org. Volunteers will be able to select their service project. Some projects have limits to the numbers of volunteers and once filled, those projects will no longer be on the registration form. Onsite registration will be available for some (but not all) service projects.

Volunteers will go directly to their service project site on Saturday Oct 10 at 9:00 am and check-in with the Site Leader or their designated Assistant.

A rock and roll cover band from Dallas Texas has achieved what many never do... longevity. A six year journey through the Dallas-Fort Worth music scene finds this five piece ensemble at the Powder Creek Pavilion in Bonham Texas on October 3.

The group has had many outdoor shows, so they are ready to bring the music to this beautiful outdoor venue. “ We started out with some shows outside, with no covering and a stage barely big enough for the

drums. So the Powder Creek Pavilion’s grand stage will be a luxury for us. Thank you Rick Massey “ states Eddie Brown, aka Sir Edward Rockafella, one of the band’s two guitarists.

A song for everyone is what this band brings to their crowds. A variety of rock styles ranging from classic, to 80’s to today’s top 40 rock always seems to be in their sets. “ If you like Bryan Adams, Foo Fighters or Led Zeppelin, or really all three, we are the band for you.” states Steve Giglio, aka Steve Esquire Rockafella, the charismatic lead singer, when asked what a crowd can expect from the band. Legacy Christian Academy Homeschool Co-op

Two weeks ago Legacy Christian Academy Homeschool Co-op had a Great State of Texas focus.

We learned fun facts and even some funny laws that are still in the books today, like, did you know it is against the law to use a feather duster in a public building and you cannot milk a stranger’s cow? After co-op was dismissed we had a Taste of the State Fair of Texas. We had chili/frito pie and chocolate sheet cake, Dr. Pepper, lemonade and even corny dogs. Did I mention homemade raspberry taffy? We had a game of Texas Trivia. Clayton Horton was our lucky winner. Congratulations to Clayton!!!

Fannin County Children’s

Center – Future Site - GDS Volunteers will mow grass, trim trees and bushes and do other yard work to clean up the future site of the Children’s Center. Several trees need to be trimmed back and cleaned up. Tall weeds and brush that needs to be cut down. Property at corner of Cedar and Lee recently had a condemned house torn down, which has left some glass, metal and other debris that needs to be picked up, cleaned up or in some cases, dug up. Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, mowers, weed eaters, clippers, chain saws, etc. Trucks and trailers for hauling off branches and debris will also be needed. The maximum number of volunteers is generally unlimited, ideally up to 20; youth can participate if they have a responsible adult with them.

In case of rain, this project will be cancelled. Site 2-19-19 Leader is Sandy Barber.

The Isaiah’s Closet - GDS volunteers are needed to help sorting clothing donations into size and season appropriate bins, deep cleaning the facility inside, possibly some landscaping work outside, too.

Supplies will be provided 10 to 15 volunteers are needed for sorting clothing and 2-5 volunteers for cleaning. Volunteers should be age 12+. Anyone under 16 must have their guardian present to supervise them.

Warning Signs Of Suicide

Press Release - In June of 2018, the deaths by suicide of two high-profile celebrities garnered substantial attention. Within days of each other, fashion designer Kate Spade and television host and author Anthony Bourdain took their own lives.

The deaths of Spade and Bourdain prompted many to inquire about suicide, its causes and if there are any signs that might help them identify if a loved one is having suicidal thoughts. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, no single thing causes suicide.

The AFSP notes that suicide is most often a by-product of the convergence of stressors and health issues that, when coupled, create a sense of hopelessness and despair.

Depression and anxiety are two conditions most commonly associated with suicide. But the AFSP notes that most people who have been diagnosed with these conditions and actively manage them go on to engage in life. Undiagnosed depression and anxiety, as well as undiagnosed or unaddressed substance abuse, increase a person’s risk for suicide.

That’s why it’s so important for men, women and young people to learn to recognize warning signs for suicide and put themselves in position to promptly address their own issues or those of a loved one.

Speech The AFSP notes that people who take their own lives may speak about doing so prior to committing suicide. People should seek help if they or a loved one talks about feeling hopeless, having no reason to live or being a burden to others.

Unique recipes are always a treat for me to put in the paper, and this week’s is certainly no exception. Although I haven’t seen Cecil Jones in a long time, we go back many years working to make Fannin County a better place to live. I hope our work was not in vain.

In a blender, cream the sugar, butter, and eggs. Add the beans, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, clove, and salt. Blend until it is thick and smooth.

BEDCo Board Elects’ Officers For Coming Year

Press Release - BEDCo’s out-going Vice President H Compton presided throughout the regular monthly board meeting last evening (9/21) within the subtle ambiance of the reduced lighting presently featured in the Bonham City Council Chamber of City Hall Following a stirring invocation Compton gaveled the meeting to order. Staff acknowledged the re-appointments of Mr. Compton as the City Councils representative on the board and Jack Lipscomb’s re-appointment. Staff introduced and the board welcomed Mr. Dale McQueen as a new appointee.

Also welcomed as a firsttime guest was Beth Purcell

representing District 2 Texas Senator Bob Hall. Beth services as Senator Hall’s ‘District Representative’ and is normally based in the Senator’s Greenville office [2816 Lee St. Suite A, Greenville 75401 (903)454-2880] Nominated to the office of BEDCo Board President was Glenn Taylor and for Vice President Alan McDonald, both were unanimously elected by their peers Organizational and housekeeping matter were the necessary focus of this month’s agenda as the board adopted a TexPool Resolution naming three board members as authorized to execute financial transactions for BEDCo, and

designating them to be added to the signature5/7/19 card at BEDCo’s depository institution.

Following a brief but amicable discussion among board members the board affirmed ‘the Monday after City Council, at 5:30PM as their continued regular meeting time.

McQueen and McDonald had previously expressed the desire through the board presiding officer to review what performance measures and recurring reports staff routinely tracks and presents. Executive Director – Economic Development Steve Filipowicz reviewed several internal baseline calculations, along with policy elements contained in BEDCo’s Interim Incen-

tive Guidelines (IIG), and the general logic of why they are crafted as they are. He noted that ‘the Guidelines’ are available to all on BEDCo’s web page, acknowledging it is probably time to strike interim from the title. Filipowicz then shared a hand-out from EDP Best Practices by Gregg Last of potential quantitative and qualitative measures along with copies of email from his ‘Econ Dev’ counterparts in Denison, Paris, and Sherman setting forth what they routinely report to their respective boards.

Dale McQueen requested that his future board packets (where practical) be sent to him electronically and staff will strive to do so as an option for board members.

Record Breaking 6/11/19 North Texas Giving Day

Press Release - More than $48,000 was raised in one day for 10 nonprofits in Fannin County on North Texas Giving Day. This year marked the 12th year of this community wide fundraising event hosted

by Communities Foundation of Texas and the third year for Fannin County to be included.

In all, more than 3,200 nonprofits participated in North Texas Giving Day on September 17, 2020. A grand total of about $58.8 million was raised, which set a new record and was significantly more than the $50 million raised in 2019. In Fannin County alone, 218 donations to 10 organizations totaled up to $48,953. This was more than double what was raised last year for Fannin County nonprofits, as $22,483 was raised in 2019.

Fannin County nonprofits who received donations included Bonham Education Foundation, Fannin County Children’s Center, Fannin County Food Pantry, Fannin County Family Crisis Center, Fannin Health Clinic, Feeding Fannin, Kool Lunches Program, Morning Star Academy, Northeast Texas Trail Coalition and Open Arms Shelter.

The Children’s Center raised $27,000, which was about triple the amount raised last year. The Children’s Center also won a $1,000 prize in a random drawing of all nonprofits who met or exceeded their matching dollars. These funds will be designated to go to a future building fund. As the demands for the services provided at the center have increased dramatically, the number of people working and volunteering at the center have increased. A new, larger space is needed to have room for all the services and programs offered by the center, as well as space for partner representatives from CPS, law enforcement, prosecution and medical professionals. The Children’s Center revealed a rendering of their future home on their social media pages on Sept 17.

Fannin Health Clinic raised $8,384. These donations will be put to use immediately,

purchasing flu vaccines for their patients, covering lab work, prescription drugs and other vital services for uninsured individuals in Fannin County.

North Texas Giving Day is powered by Communities Foundation of Texas, a 65-year-old community foundation that has presented North Texas Giving Day since 2009. North Texas Giving Day is a community-wide celebration and an event that lifts up giving by engaging the entire community to support local nonprofits, celebrating their important role in strengthening the region. Press Release - The Fannin County Office of Emergency Management will sponsor training for CERT class 23 on October 15, 2020. Over 200 citizens of Fannin County have completed this training. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Class beginning Volunteers who sign up for this course can walk into their first training class ready to make new friends, have fun, and learn how to better take care of their community.

Fannin County has a long tradition of helping each other in times of need. Helping others is “A standard act of social duty”.

Over the next eight weeks, the CERT class will learn to

fight small fires, basic first aid, search and rescue, terrorism, disaster psychology, and emergency communications. After training, volunteers join a cadre of others as an established source of information and assistance, always ready for the call to serve.

Training will be provided by the Fannin County Office of Emergency Management, Law Enforcement, Fire Service and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Instructors along with the Fannin County Amateur Radio Club and others. Fannin County CERT training is open to any citizen of Fannin

Democrats have actually fought to increase pay for police, and to provide for the long-term care of the first responders from 9/11, only to be blocked by Senate Republicans because the money went to tax breaks for their donors, instead. Democrats have nominated a man who worships regularly, who spent the last 50+ years making daily trips back and forth between D.C. and Delaware to be with his family. A man whose wife, Jill, has made a career of teaching our youth, and whose son, Beau, won the Bronze Star for service in Iraq.

Are you sure you want the Republicans making moral decisions for you, or like Democrats do you consider that a matter between yourself and your God? Or even just your conscience?

WE ACTUALLY HAVE A PLAN Republicans decided not to bother with a platform this year. They replaced it with a statement of their undying love for, and slavish devotion to Donald J. Trump. You probably think we’re kidding.

Democrats have a 91-page platform with plans and goals and ways and means. You don’t have to wonder what we’ll do, we tell you.

Unlike Republicans who promise a new health care plan every two weeks, but without delivering anything in ten years.

IT INVOLVES SCIENCE Democrats will not tell you that noise from windmills causes cancer unless a whole herd of doctors and scientists confirm it. “Herd mentality.” Same with drinking or injecting bleach for coronavirus.

Or placing a light bulb into any bodily orifice whatsoever.

Republicans --Trump is speaking for them, so who knows what he’ll say next. He said all of the above.

FIRST LOVE

JESUS has left the earth, established His Believers, AKA The Church, as His Living Body on this earth and empowered them with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2), as He said He would. (Act 1:4-5) The Mission: “GO INTO ALL THE WORLD AND PREACH THE GOOD NEWS TO ALL OF CREATION.” Mark 16:15. No longer do you have to fear death, for I, Jesus said, “I AM the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I AM alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death.” Revelation 1:18 THE GOOD NEWS (THE GOSPEL) IS THIS: He suffered death, so that by the Grace of God, He might taste death for everyone. Hebrews 2:9

This handful of Christ Followers (Christians) had gone, in the power of His Spirit, and did as they were commanded. The message – Jesus has gone from our physical presence, but He has given us the same Spirit of God to accomplish HIS mission until HE RETURNS. Yes, He will return! These followers were dispersed throughout the known world and established other bodies of believers (churches) to grow and spread the Good News. It is no surprise that Jesus would choose to write letters to those who had been established as His Body, His representatives. He wrote to encourage them and to offer a report card, of sorts, on their progress.

Their ability in the Spirit and dedication to Jesus’ command had eternal consequences for the human race. In approximately 90 AD, some sixty years after Jesus’ departure from the earth and the coming of the Holy Spirit, Jesus visited John, one of his initial disciples, imprisoned on an island for following Jesus’ instructions.

Jesus said, “Write a letter” to the churches that have been established. These were physical churches with actual addresses in known cities in Asia, but as we see in the closing of each letter, these instructions and warnings would apply to all churches throughout the ages to come.

“Anyone who has ears (that can hear the Spirit) should listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Rev 2:7 To the Church in Ephesus, write…………Revelation 2:1-7. Ephesus was one of the largest and most powerful cities in the Roman Empire during Jesus time and after. Known for its impressive harbor, it was an important city of trade. It was also known for its devotion to the worship of Diana, the goddess of fertility, and the Roman emperor, who was considered a god. When those in Ephesus heard the Good News of Jesus Christ preached by Paul, they received HIS message with great joy that God had included the Gentiles (non-Jews) in this gift of Salvation (JESUS) for all! In His letter penned by John, Jesus addressed those in Ephesus, “I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot tolerate evil.” Rev 2:2. Ephesus exhibited good judgment and discernment – they knew the difference between true teachers of Jesus Christ and those who were not (we might call them “charlatans” or frauds today.) They had been tireless in their defense of the true message of Jesus Christ and had suffered abuse and persecution because of it. Several years ago, on a morning like other mornings, I was sitting on the couch with my Bible and daily devotional. It was my alone time with God. Sounds good – right? The Lord spoke to me in a voice that I would have thought everyone in the house could hear, but surely it was HIS VOICE in my spirit – “You look like the world!” With those words, I fell face-down on the sofa unable to move. OH NO, I moaned. He had seen my “good works” but my heart was sick. I had left my Love relationship with Him and exchanged it for mundane tasks that looked good to the world but not to HIM. I had taken HIS Love for granted. In the weeks that followed I felt a heaviness that I had not felt since before I was born again on my First Encounter with the Risen Lord Jesus Christ. His love for me had continued, but I had left Him on the sidelines of my daily life instead of sitting with HIM. I was preoccupied with the things of this world – its schedules, its demands, its rewards. In the days that followed, I told Him how sorry I was; I was broken hearted and truly repentant, but I needed His power to change me. Please change me, I pleaded. Put Your Love in me and teach me how to Love You. I was unable on my own to fulfill His first and greatest command, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.” Luke 10:27 HE IS FAITHFUL, FORGIVING, AND EMPOWERING! What He told me that morning, and what He told the believers at Ephesus, “Remember how far you have fallen; repent and do the works you did at first.” Revelation 2:5. HE was and is asking for our LOVE and DEVOTION, AND HE WILL EMPOWER US TO DO WHAT PLEASES HIM. No program, no planning meeting, no drive for the poor, no visits to the sick or imprisoned – although all good works - can replace our LOVE for HIM. If we cannot see the evidence of His fulfilled mission in our church, our ministries, our schools, government, and families, perhaps we need to RETURN TO OUR FIRST LOVE. Commissioners thanked Alicia for presenting the information so discussions can continue on what the best solution might be for the County.

Cecil Kennedy spoke to the Commissioners about the possibility of renovating the previously occupied Walmart and Brookshire’s building on N. Center St., South of Hwy. 82. Game Warden Field Notes

From Cheer to Fear While on the way to patrol the San Jacinto River, a Montgomery County game warden observed a vehicle driving erratically toward a bridge near the river. The vehicle voluntarily pulled into the same area beside the road as the warden.

After approaching the vehicle, the warden noticed several beer cans in the passenger’s side floor board. The driver, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, denied drinking the ice-cold beer. The warden began a field sobriety test and when instructed for the hand 6545 US 70 coordination test, the driver Mead, OK began doing a high school 580-931-3240 cheer. When asked to do the breathalyzer to prove they hadn’t been drinking, the driver refused. After following the suspicious vehicle for a while, the truck stopped on a bridge and one of the passengers began shinning a spotlight out of the windows. The wardens watched the vehicles for a few miles, then initiated a traffic stop. Six people were in the truck, along with snake capture bags, a bucket marked for venomous snakes and snake catch poles. The wardens 6545 US 70advised them of the hunting rules and regulations and Mead, OK cited 580-931-3240them for the appropriate charges including hunting reptiles from the roadway.

It Wasn’t Me A Navarro County game warden was checking a group of hunters after hearing shots coming from a nearby field. As the warden began to check the group, one of the hunters disappeared. After a quick search, the warden found the missing hunter lying face down in a field of tall grass. The warden 6545 US 70 asked the hunter if they had Mead, anyOK luck, to which they replied 580-931-3240 they were just lying in the field. About six inches away from the hunter’s hands was a shotgun on the ground. When the warden asked about it, the hunter said they were watching the shotgun for someone else. Near his feet was a box of shotgun shells and a stool commonly used by bird hunters. The hunter continued to say they hadn’t been hunting.

Questioning continued for a short time and the individual finally admitted the obvious, they had been hunting. The individual has never possessed a Texas hunting license.

From Bad to Worse Four game wardens apprehended a group of individuals who were taking fish from the Navasota River with an illegal electricity-producing device.

The group had five flathead catfish in their possession, which were released back into the river. In addition to that violation, the group was in pos-

session of drug paraphernalia, 3 grams of methamphetamine, an illegally possessed firearm and a truck that had been reported stolen. Several water safety violations were also noted. Violation categories ranged from Class C misdemeanor to 3rd degree felony.

All violators were taken to the Leon County Jail.

Feeling Green Two game wardens from Montgomery County and San Jacinto County were patrolling the highway when they saw an oncoming car swerving from their lane. faint odor of marijuana drifted from the car. The wardens escorted the driver to the side of the road to avoid traffic. The driver grabbed his abdomen claiming nausea from the spin but doing so caused the sound of crumpling paper. Wardens asked the individual to raise his hands away from his waist and they found a large paper sack full of marijuana tucked into his beltline. The operator of the vehicle said the bag was originally under his seat, but it slid forward under the pedals causing the reckless driving.

The individual was placed 6545 US 70 under arrest for possession of Mead, OK marijuana. Cases pending.

milk production from April 1 to Aug. 31, 2020. The milk production for Sept. 1, 2020, to Dec. 31, 2020, will be estimated by FSA. Eligible beef cattle, hogs and pigs, and lambs and sheep payments will be based on the maximum owned inventory of eligible livestock, excluding breeding stock, on a date selected by the producer, between Apr. 16, 2020, and Aug. 31, 2020.

Flat-rate Crops Crops that either do not meet the 5-percent price decline trigger or do not have data available to calculate a price change will have payments calculated based on eligible 2020 acres multiplied by $15 per acre.

These crops include alfalfa, extra long staple (ELS) cotton, oats, peanuts, rice, hemp, millet, mustard, safflower, sesame, triticale, rapeseed, and several others.

Sales Commodities Sales commodities include specialty crops; aquaculture; nursery crops and floriculture; other commodities not included in the price trigger and flat-rate categories, including tobacco; goat milk; mink (including pelts); mohair; wool; and other livestock (excluding breeding stock) not included under the price trigger category that were grown for food, fiber, fur, or feathers. Payment calculations will use a sales-based approach, where producers are paid based on five payment gradations associated with their 2019 sales.

Additional commodities are eligible in CFAP 2 that weren’t eligible in the first iteration of the program. If your agricultural operation has been impacted by the pandemic since April 2020, we encourage you to apply for CFAP 2. Eligibility There is a payment limitation of $250,000 per person or entity for all commodities combined.

Applicants who are corporations, limited liability companies, limited partnerships may qualify for additional payment limits when members actively provide personal labor or personal management for the farming operation. Producers will also have to certify they meet the Adjusted Gross Income limitation of $900,000 unless at least 75 percent or more of their income is derived from farming, ranching or forestry-related activities. Producers must also be in compliance with Highly Erodible Land and Wetland Conservation provisions.

Applying for Assistance Producers can apply for assistance beginning Sept. 21, 2020. Applications will be accepted through Dec. 11, 2020.

Additional information and application forms can be found at farmers.gov/cfap. Documentation to support the producer’s application and certification may be requested. All other eligibility forms, such as those related to adjusted gross income and payment information, can be downloaded from farmers.gov/cfap/apply. USDA has incorporated improvements in CFAP 2 based from stakeholder engagement and public feedback to better meet the needs of impacted farmers and ranchers.

Producers can apply for CFAP 2 at USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) county offices. This program provides financial assistance that gives producers the ability to absorb increased marketing costs associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Producers will be compensated for ongoing market disruptions and assisted with the associated marketing costs.

CFAP 2 payments will be made for three categories of commodities – Price Trigger Commodities, Flat-rate Crops and Sales Commodities.

Price Trigger Commodities Price trigger commodities are major commodities that meet a minimum 5-percent price decline over a specified period of time. Eligible price trigger crops include barley, corn, sorghum, soybeans, sunflowers, upland cotton, and all classes of wheat. Payments will be based on 2020 planted acres of the crop, excluding prevented planting and experimental acres. Payments for price trigger crops will be the greater of: 1) the eligible acres multiplied by a payment rate of $15 per acre; or 2) the eligible acres multiplied by a nationwide crop marketing percentage, multiplied by a crop-specific payment rate, and then by the producer’s weighted 2020 Actual Production History (APH) approved yield. If the APH is not available, 85 percent of the 2019 Agriculture Risk Coverage-County Option (ARC-CO) benchmark yield for that crop will be used.

For broilers and eggs, payments will be based on 75 percent of the producers’ 2019 production.

Bonham-Graveside services for Madgie Oleta Dodson, age 90, of Allen formerly of Bonham, were held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Chris Bruce officiated. Mrs. Dodson passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at Grand Brook Memory Care Center in Allen TX. Madgie Oleta (Rencher) was born in Dodd City TX on May 21, 1930 to Walter Earnest and Mary Edna (Basford) Rencher.

She married Marvin Odell Dodson on March 26, 1951 in Dallas, TX he preceded her in death on December 2, 2007.

Oleta worked for Reserve Life

Insurance as an insurance examiner until her retirement.

Oleta was flawless at being a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

She was quiet but serious when needed, very protective of her family, always had an ear ready to listen, never had a cruel word to say and always thought the best of everyone. Oleta was a great cook, loved to read and enjoyed crocheting and sewing.

She is of the Baptist faith and member of Trinity Baptist Church in Bonham, TX. Oleta is survived by son Michael Dodson and wife Stacy of Allen TX, and son Gerry Dodson and wife Gina of Allen TX. Grandchildren, Ami Lunceford and husband Brady of Canton TX, Jeremy Dodson and wife Yesenia of Orlando FL, Alyssa Dunnahoo and husband Christopher of Ft Worth, TX and Chris Bruce and wife Rachel of Lexington TX. BYRON WAYNE BURK

Byron Wayne Burk, 66, of Quinlan, passed away on September 12, 2020. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Terrace Baptist Church with Rev. Riley Hamilton and Dr. Chet Haney officiating.

Burial followed at Dodd City Cemetery. Funeral services are under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.

Byron was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on March 1, 1954 to Wayne and Betty Burk. He married Ginger Mills on February 18, 1978 in Arlington, Texas. He was a model husband and a father to his two daughters. Byron was a man of tremendous wisdom, skill, and energy, with a true servant’s heart. He was known for his joy-filled personality and wonderful sense of humor.

Byron started his career at E-Systems. He was a school teacher and ultimately became an administrator at Quinlan ISD. He knew almost everything about all building trades and for several years ran his own construction business that built over 400 buildings. He served the Lord as a bi-vocational minister of music and youth at FBC Cash and Quinlan. Youth minister at Lone Oak Baptist Church. He led singing for several church revivals. Byron was gifted as a chalk artist, and he presented the Gospel to hundreds of groups in many, many churches through the years.

He was a Sunday School teacher, youth sponsor, choir member, deacon, chairman of deacons, president of the senior adult group, leader of the volunteer builders group, and a member of several different committees at Highland Terrace Baptist Church where he was a member for several decades.

Byron was an enthusiastic advocate in the Hunt Association until he passed away. He worked on numerous projects for the Hunt Baptist Association, Lake Lavon Camp and Conference Center, and For the City community outreach in Greenville.

He was always known to help the churches in the Hunt Baptist Association with their building issues, often donating materials and doing most of the repair work himself.

Byron was a loyal Southern Baptist who had a tremendous heart for Baptist missions of all kinds. He was a stand-up guy when he needed to be, but was also a true peacemaker that any pastor would want as a leader in their congregation.

Byron enjoyed traveling the world with his wife Ginger, skiing, ballroom dancing, fixing, designing and creating anything. Most of all he enjoyed entertaining and being with his family, friends and being Ba Lala to his two grandchildren, Zane and Greenlee.

Byron is survived by his wife, Ginger Burk; mother, Betty Burk; daughter, Jennifer Spivy and husband, Matthew, Bridget Barnard and husband, Steven; brother, Bruce Burk and wife, Sherri; sisters, Sheryl Brummer and Ronda Fitzwater and husband, Ronnie; and grandchildren, Zane and Greenlee Spivy; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father.

Pallbearers were Steven Barnard, Brian Burk, Bryce Burk, Dusty Lee, Bobby Mills, Doug Rauch, Jr., Jacob Rauch, David Reasoner, James Reasoner, Randy Reasoner and Matthew Spivy.

Feeding Fannin partners with different entities in the vari-

MARY ANN COVERT TATGE 1922 - 2020

Mary Ann Covert Tatge passed away peacefully on September 17, 2020 in her home surrounded by family. She was born April 20, 1922 to Myrtle Pearson Keene Peterson and Addison Center Peterson in Bonham, Texas.

She married Dr. Spencer E. Covert in Dallas, Texas in January 1944 and they moved to Long Beach, California shortly thereafter. She received the Bachelor of Arts degree in English from CSU Long Beach and the Master of Library Science degree from the University of Southern California. The family moved to Fullerton in 1966. Mary Ann served as the Librarian at Fullerton High School from 1968 through 1987. She also served as librarian simultaneously at Fullerton and Troy High Schools for several years during that time. She took great pride in the library’s support of the students and faculty and the collections she built.

After the death of her first husband in 1986, she married Gerald “Jerry” Tatge and they were devoted to one another for over thirty years. Mary Ann was a very talented pianist and shared her love of music with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, neighbors and friends. She was known by her extended family as the family historian and shared her deep and very entertaining knowledge of family stories and history.

Mary Ann will be remembered by her children and their spouses, Spencer (Joyce) Covert, Lucinda (Chris) CovertVail, Addison (Debra) Covert, and her grandchildren Laurel (Ross) Stensrud, Meghan (Michael) Russell, Spencer (Jennifer) Covert, and Alicia (Joseph) Blackwood. She has 5 great grandchildren, Roscoe and Mason Stensrud, Matthew and Max Russell and Priscilla Blackwood, all of whom she loved very much.

Mary Ann will also be remembered by her step daughters Shelly, Terri, Kimberly (David) Lindgren and their children, Alfred (Kristy) Pluma, Candice (Eric) Castillo and Jestin Tatge. She is also survived by six great step grandchildren, Savannah, Colton and Mason Pluma, Melia Alexander, and Makaila and Mariella Castillo, whom she adored.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Harris, Ernest “Buddy”, Carlton, and Forest Keene.

Mary Ann was known for her integrity, sharp sense of right and wrong, generosity, love of family and enthusiasm for politics, birding, opera, her musicianship and her beloved piano.

She will be forever missed.

The graveside service will take place on Thursday, October 1st at 11am, at the Santa Ana Cemetery, 1919 E. Santa Clara, Santa Ana, California. A celebration of Mary Ann’s life will be held at a later date when it is safe to do so.

Distribution might take place in parks, parking lots or civic buildings.

Tere Curtis, Board Chair for Feeding Fannin, has been working in a coordinated effort with Jason Egan, a member of the Church and fellow Board member, to get the grant approved. Ms. Curtis expressed her gratitude in receiving the grant, “We are so excited to receive this kind of support. It will go along way to helping us continue to provide high quality meals for those struggling in our county. Especially during this time of so much need!”

President Christian Cooper, representing the Sherman Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saint which includes congrega-

tions in Fannin, Grayson and Collin counties, was equally grateful for the opportunity to help the community. “As brothers and sisters, we are grateful to unite with the community and act on principles taught by Jesus-compassion and love for all people. Supporting families and feeding the hungry are basic acts of love and faith that we can all do. We are glad to be able to support Feeding Fannin and their efforts with both resources and volunteers.”

Feeding Fannin is continuing its efforts in the community by working with local police and fire departments, churches and other organizations to plant local community gardens and other projects to benefit community members in need.

Feeding Fannin received the $5000 grant on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at Bonham City Hall. Their next food distribution event will be at the Bonham Armory Thursday, September 24th, 2020.

In addition to depression and anxiety, people who are considering taking their own lives may exhibit a loss of interest in things they once enjoyed. Irritability, humiliation, agitation/anger, and relief/sudden improvement are other moods the AFSP notes may be warning signs for suicide.

The deaths of two highly regarded celebrities brought suicide to the forefront in 2018. Taking the time to understand suicide and its warning signs can help people prevent tragedies. People who speak of feeling trapped or feeling unbearable pain also may be exhibiting warning signs of suicide.

district alignment en route to the Region II-1A quarterfinals, defeated 2As Wolfe City and Trenton in district play, after 0-2 start in the new 16-2A. When the postseason starts late next month, it will equate the 26th in the previous 31 years for Dodd City, which ranked No. 8 on Sept. 21 -- and has been as high as No. 5 -- in the Texas Girls Coaches Association combined 2A-1A poll.

By Rich Hilliard LEONARD -- COVID-19 affected most Fannin County football teams during September.

It prompted game cancellations, ensuing unexpected searches to find replacement opponents -- and even the moving up of play by a few weeks for a couple of Class 2A-I districts involving Fannin teams, to provide time for make-up contests, if needed, later.

3A-II Leonard experienced the most disruption due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A COVID-19 positive student’s presence in an LISD athletic facility on Sept. 2 led to the cancellations of Leonard’s games on Sept. 4 at 3A-I Commerce and on Sept. 11 at home against 3A-I Bonham.

Despite the interruption, Leonard returned to play on Sept. 18 with a resounding result: a 62-20 win at 2A-II Detroit to compete non-district play.

It marked the Tigers’ first game action since a 14-0 home win over 2A-I Wolfe City on Aug. 28 in their season opener.

District 8-3A-II play has now arrived for Leonard, starting Sept. 25 at Bells, a regional semifinalist and champion in the district the two shared in 2019.

This fall, Leonard, a 6-5 bidistrict finalist in 2019, will vie for a 10th postseason in its last 12 years under long-time head coach Shane Fletcher.
