BONHAM, Texas — A longtime Bonham tradition is taking on a new life during the 40th Anniversary of Autumn in Bonham. On Saturday, October 3, residents and visitors of all ages are invited to walk, run or roll through local history during the Vive le Bois d’Arc Family 5K: A Historic Passport Tour. The 3.8-mile, non-timed route can be completed by bike or foot and combines outdoor activity, local history, and six of Bonham’s historic and cultural destinations into one familyfriendly adventure. Participants will begin by picking up a Vive Passport at Rider Check-In at the Roy V. Floyd Community Center, 1100 W. 5th St. Vive participants will be the final group to depart following the 8:00am Autumn in Bonham bicycle rally start, with flexible starts available through approximately 9:00am. From there, it’s time to collect, explore and discover Bonham. Participants will travel from stop to stop, learning a little local history
stamp at each of six locations: Powder Creek Park, Fannin County Museum of History, Fannin County Courthouse, Creative Arts Center, Sam Rayburn Museum Library, and Fort Inglish Village Museum. A Storybook Trail Rooted in Bonham One particularly special experience awaits at Powder Creek Park, where participants will follow a Storybook Trail featuring The Story of the Bois d’Arc: The Roots of Bonham, Texas. The new book was created through the passion and dedication of members of the Bonham community who believe its history is a story worth preserving. It explores the remarkable bois d’arc tree and its connections to the people, places, and traditions that helped shape Bonham, introducing readers to stories surrounding the bois d’arc tree and creek, Fort Inglish, Bailey Inglish, Fannin County, and the community that eventually became Bonham. Experiencing that story outdoors at Powder Creek Park adds another layer to the adventure, allowing families to learn about the roots of Bonham while traveling through the very community whose story the book tells. After visiting all six stops,
way through the official Autumn in Bonham finish line and then visit the Vive le Bois d’Arc Info Booth near Fort Inglish Museum. A stamp from every stop is required to complete the passport, which can be redeemed through 4:00 p.m. for a special finisher prize. Take Home a Little Piece of Vive For the first finishers, there is an extra-special piece of Bonham waiting at the end. Hoppy Farms Neighborhood Nurseries is sponsoring bois d’arc tree saplings for the first 20 passport holders to complete the route with all six stamps. The living souvenirs provide a fitting connection to everything participants will discover along the way— and an opportunity for the roots of Vive le Bois d’Arc to quite literally continue growing throughout the community. The Historic Passport Tour is open to all ages, and everyone who wants to participate may receive their own passport. The route can be completed by bike or foot, and helmets are required for all bicycle participants. Continued

6/3/25 I am always humbled taking one of our Veterans to the National Cemetery for burial. The solemnness of every headstone in a perfect row, the quiet reflection of the pond, the perfectly kept landscape. I often reflect on 1 John 3:18 — Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and truth. I can think of no greater act of love than to voluntarily sign up for something with no promise of coming home. To all the brave men and women that faithfully serve I see your love for country, freedom, and mankind. And as your funeral director I find no greater honor then to carry you home.

DC, Ector stay in 1A v'ball Top 10

Leonard became the first Fannin County varsity volleyball team to reach district play on Sept. 8. As a final preparation, the Lady Tigers finished third with a 4-2 record in the Oahu Volleyball Classic in Hawaii, held Sept. 3-5. Leonard reached District 10-3A action having already garnered 20 wins -- a year after setting a single-season school record for varsity victories with 34 in the sport in 2025.
Three Fannin County volleyball teams remained ranked in the Texas Girls Coaches Association's first September Top 25 polls. In Class 1A, Dodd City at No. 4 and Ector at No. 6 stayed in the Top 10 on Sept. 9, as its preparations for District 21-1A play in October continue. Meanwhile, Leonard at No. 20 also remained in the 3A poll, as District 10-3A plays commences this month.
En Route To Even-Better Encore: Lady Eagles in '26 looking likely to outdo historic '25 v'ball campaign
Ector's Adalynn Dederick (4) sets the ball on Sept. 4 during non-district volleyball played in Trenton.
Ector's Alana Mackey (1) blocks a return volley at the net on Sept. 4 during non-district volleyball played in Trenton.
Ector's Odette Cruz (13) looks to hit past a block attempt by Trenton's Kinley Bingham (11) on Sept. 4 during non-district volleyball played in Trenton, as Adalynn Dederick (4) watches.
Ector libero Audrey Arie (10) starts a return for the Lady Eagles, as head coach Dene' Adams (leftmost), Ainsley Greathouse (9) and Ella Laymance (rightmost) watch on Sept. 4 during non-district volleyball played in Trenton.
Ector's Aleea Wheeler (3) elevates in sync with a return volley at the net on Sept. 4 during non-district volleyball played in Trenton.
Ector's Cheyenne Beaty (7) rises at the net in sync with a return volley on Sept. 4 during non-district volleyball played in Trenton.
Ector's Ainsley Greathouse (9) serves on Sept. 4 during non-district volleyball played in Trenton.
Ector head volleyball coach Dene' Adams speaks to the Lady Eagles during a huddle on Sept. 4 during non-district volleyball played in Trenton. Story and photos by Rich Hilliard ECTOR -- A first-time trip to the volleyball regional quarterfinals in 2025 completed the best season in the then five-year history of the sport at Class 1A Ector. En route, the Lady Eagles recorded 22 wins -- another single-season school-best
in the sport -- including their first two postseason victories. It took Sulphur Bluff, a 1A regional finalist in 2025, to stop the Lady Eagles -- needing to rally after an opening set loss. Ector this season reached Labor Day having almost already surpassed that win total -- a month before
district play begins. A roster replete with 2025 superlative recipients and other all-district on-court selections has returned, as the Lady Eagles look for an encore -- or even more -- in 2026 Seniors Alana Mackey, the 21-1A Offensive Most Valuable Player; Audrey Arie, the Libero superlative;
Adalynn Dederick, the Setter/Server superlative recipient, as well as Dene' Adams, the Coach of the Year, are back. Additionally, first-team selections Aleea Wheeler, a senior; second-team recipient Odette Cruz, another senior; honorable mention Ella Laymance, a junior, and other veterans
had Ector ranked amongst the top teams in the last Texas Girls Coaches Association 1A/2A poll to start September. District play will commence on Oct. 2, as the Lady Eagles play host to Dodd City, as 21-1A this fall expands to four teams vying for the three available postseason berths.
Ector's Ella Laymance (11) serves on Sept. 4 during non-district volleyball played in Trenton.

A special section allowing the readers a Voice in our community
Letters to the Editor
Our Letter to the Editor/Readers Voice section is composed of letters submitted to The Fannin County Leader by our readers. The views expressed in these letters are not necessarily the views of The Fannin County Leader. Political letters must be paid for, in advance. To submit a letter, please e-mail fcleditor2020@ gmail.com. Letters 400 words or less are published for FREE. Letters exceeding the limit will be charged $10.00 for each additional 100 words. Free publication of Letters to the Editor is limited to one every 60 days. Letters from the same contributor within the 60 day period will be published at standard advertising rate. Opposing views are welcomed and will be published according to the same guidelines. We welcome Letters to the Editor on topics that would be of concern and interest to the community. The decision to publish is left to the Editor and Management. We do not allow personal attacks on individuals, that’s what Face Book is for. If a process is broken, you have a strong opinion, or something is just dead wrong, e-mail us a letter and sign your name. Un-signed letters will not be published.
Letter to Editor: Tom Turner was a one-man Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Foundation, Bonham promoter, and top notch local businessman all rolled into one. I enjoyed working with him in the 1990s and early 2000s when I was with the City of Bonham. He did so many positive, good things to improve Bonham and Fannin County that it's hard to count and remember them all. And at the age when most people retire, he started up another local newspaper which is now one of the only means of countywide news and communication that we have left. I have tremendous respect for him and I am very sad to have lost a fine friend. Pete Phillips Bonham
Letter to Editor: Seems awful disturbing to me, that we see people in city, county, federal governments reaching out to people with joy that want to annihilate us as Americans and want to either consume our souls or kill us all in a Christian Nation. If you are here to protect us as citizens from this type of anti-Christiandom, you so far are doing a good job! As the Mayor of Dearborn stated when confronted said "if you don't like it - move." Is this what the citizens of the country that gives more than it gets, really want? This is not the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's or ? This is Now. We have to wake up and be aware before it may be too late - Remember 9/11? Same people trying to rearrange your lives (life) Now! Fritz Dietrich

Never Give Up
Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas Galatians 6:9 NKJV And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. It is so very easy to “grow weary.” Life in the broken world is sure to receive blow after blow. Like a boxer, you begin to wonder, “How many more blows can I take?” Another car repair? Another health challenge? Another friend walks away? Another scolding by the supervisor? A popular phrase says it best,
“The hits just keep on coming.” So, what is the answer? Just give up? Just quit? Crawl in a hole and hide? No. God’s answer is to never “grow weary while doing good.” One of my favorite movie lines is from a very silly movie called, “Galaxy Quest.” It is “NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDER!” In this verse this call to “not grow weary” comes with a promise: “IN DUE SEASON WE SHALL REAP.” In the spirit of honest and transparency, I have had
a tough week. I have had moments of lamenting, despair and discouragement. However, I keep my heart settled on this precious promise which I will now repeat: “In due season, we shall reap.” I’m praying the “reap” comes September 27-30. However, it could come this very day. Will you “hang in there” with me, keep praying, keep working, keep witnessing, and not grow weary? For His Glory, Lyn and Lissa
Faith Without Works Is Dead Hello everyone! This week I am focusing on James 2:14-26. In this passage, James reminds us of the example given to us in Genesis chapter 22, when God commanded Abraham to take his son Isaac to Moriah and offer him up for a burnt offering. Abraham obeyed God’s command because he had faith that God would provide Himself a lamb for a sacrifice. As Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, an angel of the Lord called out unto him from Heaven in verse 12 saying, “Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do anything unto him, for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from me.!” We see in verse 13 that Abraham saw a ram caught in a thicket by his horns, picked him up, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son Isaac. The Lord greatly
blessed Abraham because of his faith. The lesson that James is teaching us in this passage is that if we say that we have faith, but we do not act upon it, it is meaningless. A person’s actions, or works, are a sign of their faith. Faith that doesn’t produce good works is not saving faith, but rather dead and meaningless. James uses examples from our everyday lives, and from the Old Testament, to explain the nature of saving faith, which is real and shows itself in our lives. We must remember that we are saved by grace, through faith, and not by anything that we have done. As I’ve said before, the problem in our nation today is that we have completely lost our dependency upon God, and our faith in Him. We must cling to the promise that God gives us in 2 Chronicles 7:14. If we, as a nation, would obey the command given to
us in this verse, we would be showing an example of saving faith. Isaac Watts, one of the most well-known hymn writers in music history, wrote a classic hymn in 1707 based on this passage from the book of James. This should really be our prayer for our nation in these uncertain and difficult times which we live. “So let our lips and lives express The holy Gospel we profess; So let our walks and virtues shine, To prove the doctrine all divine. Our flesh and sense must be denied, Passion and envy, lust and pride; While justice, temperance, truth, and love Our inward piety approve. That sacred stream, Thy holy Word, That all our raging fear controls: Sweet peace Thy promises afford, And give new strength to fainting souls.” Bro. Josh Stevenson
The Need For Repetition Of God’s Word
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
It is understood that unless we are reminded or unless we continually use our knowledge, we will forget. We remember singing the “alphabet song” repeatedly to learn the alphabet, we remember writing ‘spelling words’ repeatedly to the learn the spelling of each word, and we remember doing flashcards or reciting multiplication and division problems repeatedly to learn even the easiest of principles that would be used throughout the rest of our lives. Even then, we can forget those things if we are not reminded. God’s word is VITAL to our spiritual life. We must make sure, that we are being reminded of the truth. Jesus said that God’s “word is truth” (John 17:17) and “if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32). We must “CONTINUE” in the word of Christ. Hosea penned
the words of God in the Old Testament, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). Today, everyone in the United States of America, can have a copy of the Bible, God’s word. Each of us must take the time to read and study the Bible on a regular basis. Paul encouraged Timothy to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). The Bereans “were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind and searched the scriptures daily” (Acts 17:11). The word of God, “the gospel of Christ” “is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth” (Romans 1:16). How important it is to know the gospel of Christ. Paul stated that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction
in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Peter helps us to understand the importance in the repetitive learning of God’s word and warned “beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness” and then commanded that Christians “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:17-18). Paul encourages church members “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:1-2). We must renew our minds which is accomplished through the repetition of God’s word.

PSALMS 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Legend Bank Receives Federal Reserve Approval for Acquisition of Graham Savings and Loan
BOWIE, Texas – Legend Bancorp, Inc., the holding company for Legend Bank, N.A., announced today that the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas approved Legend Bank’s application to acquire Graham Savings and Loan on August 24, 2026. Together with approval from the Texas Department of Savings and Mortgage Lending, Graham Savings and Loan’s primary regulator, the required regulatory approvals for the merger have now been received, marking a significant milestone in bringing together two Texas community banks built on shared values, relationship banking, and a commitment to serving local communities. The transaction previously received unanimous approval from the Boards of Directors of both institutions, followed by Graham Savings and Loan shareholder approval at a Special Shareholders’ Meeting held on August 6, 2026, with 99.21% of votes cast in favor of the merger. “The approvals received
from shareholders and regulators represent an important milestone for both organizations,” said Jay Bearden, President & CEO of Legend Bank. “We are grateful for the confidence shown throughout this process and for the strong support of both organizations’ Boards of Directors, employees, customers, shareholders, and communities. From the beginning, it was clear that Graham Savings and Loan and Legend Bank share the same commitment to community banking, local decision-making, and relationship-based service. We look forward to welcoming the Graham Savings and Loan team and customers into the Legend Bank family and building on the strong foundation our organizations have established over generations.” Codie Hedge, President & CEO and Senior Lender of Graham Savings and Loan, said the milestone reflects the shared values that brought the two organizations together. “This
milestone represents far more than shareholder and regulatory approval, it reflects confidence in the future of our bank. We are grateful for the support we have received throughout this process and excited about the opportunities this partnership creates for our customers, employees, and communities. Legend Bank is the right partner for Graham Savings and Loan because we share the same values, commitment to community banking, and belief that relationships come first. Together, we look forward to building on our legacy while expanding the resources available to serve our communities.” With the required approvals now in place, the partnership moves into its next chapter as both organizations prepare for an anticipated October 1, 2026 closing, with full systems conversion anticipated in late April 2027. What Customers Can Expect For customers, nothing is changing today.
Graham Savings and Loan customers should continue banking as they always have. Accounts, debit cards, online banking, branch locations, and the local Graham Savings and Loan team remain the same. Any future changes will be communicated well in advance. Legend Bank customers will also continue banking at their current branch locations throughout the transition period. Once the acquisition and full systems conversion are complete, Legend Bank customers will gain access to three additional branch locations through Graham Savings and Loan, providing expanded access and added convenience across the communities we serve. Both organizations remain committed to making the transition as seamless as possible while continuing the personal service, community focus, and local decision-making customers have trusted for generations.

What Do You Know About Human Trafficking? It may be closer to home than you think Press Release - Human trafficking does not always begin with a stranger or a kidnapping. Many times, exploitation starts quietly through trust, secrecy, manipulation, online conversations, or access to a child’s vulnerability. According to Jaco Booyens Ministries, America is the number one nation in the world demanding sex with children. Digital grooming has become the new predator playground, with an estimated 750,000 predators online at any given time. JBM also reports that 60% of children have unknowingly engaged with a predator through online chat. Predators are not limited to one app or platform. They are active anywhere children and teens can be contacted, especially on social media apps, gaming platforms, and any digital space with a chat feature. The Fannin County Leader is committed to helping families understand this difficult issue with clarity and practical next steps. Parents, grandparents, churches, schools, and community leaders do not need more fear. They need tools, awareness, and guidance they can use. Each month, Jaco Booyens Ministries provides free Parent Community resources to help families better understand the risks children are facing online and offline. These include The Parent Brief, a monthly email focused on one important issue affecting families, along with helpful toolkits and guides such as The Parent Toolkit, The Summer Safety Guide, The Special Needs Toolkit, and The Launch Years Guide for ages 18–24. These resources offer practical information, conversation starters, checklists, and safety tools designed to help adults protect children with wisdom, awareness, and action. To join the free Parent Community, scan the QR code provided and sign up with just your name and email address. (Close out the pop up, not needed to sign up) Additional resources and information are also available at helpjbm. org/parent-community. Human trafficking is not just a global issue. It is a community issue. Protecting children begins with informed, prepared adults.

A Matter of Balance
Fannin County AgriLife Extension will be hosting A Matter of Balance, an eight-session program Thursdays in September and October from 10:00 am – 11:30, starting Thursday, September 3 at the Derrell Hall Education Center, 2505 N. Center Street in Bonham. If you or someone you love has experienced a fall
or has a fear of falling, call the Fannin County AgriLife Extension office at (903) 583-7453 to reserve your spot. Space is limited. This program is open to all and is free of charge. A Matter of Balance: Aging comes with a variety of unique quirks, oddities, and issues, but falling and fall-related injuries are at the top of the list of concerns. In the United States, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-
fatal injuries. According to a compiled list of fallrelated statistics by the National Council on Aging, 1 in 4 Americans over age sixty-five fall every year. Additionally, every eleven seconds someone over age sixty-five is treated in the emergency room for fall-related injuries and every nineteen minutes someone dies from a fall-related injury. In other words, falls are responsible for more than 3 million ER visits and more than 32,000 deaths annually. The fear of falling can lead to reduced activities, physical health decline, social isolation, and depression. Falling, fall-related
injuries, and a fear of falling do not have to be a guaranteed part of aging. Falls can be avoided through lifestyle changes and participation in evidence-based fall prevention programs like A Matter of Balance. Please join us if you are concerned about falls, have fallen in the past, have restricted your activities due to falling concerns, or have an interest in improving balance, flexibility, and strength. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Bethany Arie at 903-5837453 or email bethany. arie@ag.tamu.edu
