voters to vote at any location on Election Day. The elections office has constantly had to re-direct voters on Election Day to other locations. Our new policy will allow us to tell every voter they are welcome—no matter where they show up. The Fannin County Commissioners, the Elections Administration, and the party chairs all believe that this program will support the needs of our voters. Fannin County currently has 17 county election precincts that it has combined to have seven polling places available on Election Day for the last three elections. Based on the state and federal requirements, Fannin County plans to open at least nine countywide polling places on Election Day in November. The elections office is negotiating with various locations and should be able to provide citizens with a list of polling sites in the near future. For the first time, early voting will take place at the Fannin County Justice Center. Citizens will also be able to vote for any other entity’s
with the county elections office. A good example for the November 2026 election will be the bond election for the City of Leonard. Any voter eligible to vote for the Leonard bond will be able to do so at any location. We are hopeful that this will increase voter participation for every election in the county. Cities and schools will still retain the right to run a separate election if they choose to, but if the Fannin County Elections Administration handles the election, the ballot will be available “countywide.” One of the primary requirements to qualify for the Countywide Program is sufficient equipment. As of November 2025, Fannin County has procured enough KnowInk Electronic Poll Pads (34) to cover our needs for all Election Day sites. These devices were originally successfully implemented during Early Voting in November of 2020, and then used for our larger Election Day locations in November of 2024. These devices allow for instantaneous updates between polling locations regarding the
to allow for continuous internet service. This also increases our cybersecurity since our hotspots and network would be more difficult to penetrate. In the worst case scenario where a polling location has no internet coverage and no electricity, our Poll Pads are capable of operating offline, allowing voters to continue casting their ballots. Once data connectivity is reinstated, the Poll Pads update the Elections Office with every transaction that transpired during the blackout period. This equipment eliminates the possibility of a voter being able to cast a ballot at more than one location. The county has been using Hart Verity Duo Touch equipment (69 machine) and Hart 38BT Scanners (Version 2.7.6—22 units) at all voting locations since 2021. While our poll pads are online, that is the only online equipment used for our elections. Continued

Fannin County Witnesses to History: Walter Potts A Joint Project of the Sam Rayburn House Historic Site and the Fannin County Historical Commission Celebrating America 250 with Spotlights of Fannin County Citizens Who Participated In or Witnessed Historical Events
By Malinda Allison, Fannin County Historical Commission Walter Edward Potts was born January 9, 1892 in Denison, Texas, the son of William and Mollie Oliphant Potts. William grew up in Pottsboro and Denison and Mollie was from Ravenna, the daughter of Fountain and Patsy Oliphant. William and Mollie were living in Denison in 1902 when Mollie died in a smallpox plague in 1902. Walter was nine years old. His father took Walter and his brother to live with his grandparents in Ravenna, where Walter spent the remainder of his childhood. Walter only attended school to the 3rd grade, but he became a skilled farmer, carpenter and blacksmith. At the age of twenty-five, Walter was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as one of the Buffalo Soldiers during World War One. The name “Buffalo Soldier” was first applied to four black Regular Army regiments that were authorized by Congress in 1866 to fight in the Indian wars. The black soldiers killed buffalos to make robes to keep themselves warm on the cold plains. The “Buffalo Soldiers” continued their service in the SpanishAmerican War. Black men were drafted for World War I, and one of those was Fannin County resident Walter Potts, who was inducted on October 29, 1917. He received training at Camp Travis in San Antonio and Camp Upton, New York. Because of segregation Negroes did not fight alongside white American soldiers. Walter’s 92nd Division, 367th Infantry Unit was assigned to the French 16th Division. Walter left the United States on June 10, 1918 with more than 1,100 men. His unit was sent to France near Metz, Germany, and he was stationed about 700 yards from the border between France and Germany. The commander of the 367th called his regiment The Buffaloes. Details of the battles and service can be read in the book authored by Walter’s granddaughter, Eva Hogan and
titled The Last Buffalo. Walter returned from France to New York City on February 17, 1919. Walter married Eva Brown upon his return from France, on May 22, 1919. Eva was a school teacher in the Mulberry/Ravenna
Marshall and taught school in Ravenna. In 1992 a monument to the Buffalo Soldiers of all wars was dedicated in Leavenworth, Kansas. Cmdr. Walter E. Potts, Carlton Philpot, chairman of circa 1918 the Buffalo Soldier Monument Committee, sent a poster of the monument to Walter, wishing him a happy birthday. Aug. 18, 2026 Why it matters - Impaired driving deaths consistently spike over Labor Day weekend in Texas. A mother shares her story of loss, while TxDOT travels the state encouraging everyone to get a sober ride during increased law enforcement efforts. PARIS – The end of summer should be a time of celebration, yet Labor Day continues to be a time when too many people choose to drive impaired. The danger is real. Last year, 35% of all Texas crash fatalities were drug or alcohol-related. Over Labor Day Weekend 2025, that number climbed to 57%, with 26 people killed in less than four days. To help prevent more families from facing that kind of loss, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is supporting increased
law enforcement efforts statewide and taking its Drive Sober. No Regrets. campaign on the road. safe. The message is simple: Drive like a Texan by being kind, courteous, and safe—and never driving impaired. A devoted mother and officer, killed in the line of duty Jennifer Chavis, Harris County Precinct 7 deputy constable and military veteran, dedicated her life to keeping her community safe. Sadly, she was doing just that on April 2, 2022, when she was killed by an impaired driver. Following several 911 calls reporting erratic driver behavior, Chavis was in position to pull over the driver when he slammed into her patrol car, causing an explosion that engulfed it in flames. She did not survive, and the driver later admitted to drinking before the tragic crash. “I still wait by the phone for my daughter’s call at night, letting me know she made it home safe,” said Tanya Childress, Chavis’ mother. “Her young son is now growing up without a mother. Her siblings must now go
8/12/25
through life without their big sister and best friend. And all of this could have been avoided if the other driver had not made the thoughtless and selfish choice to drive while impaired.” The deadly reality of impaired driving During Labor Day Weekend last year, a person was killed by an impaired driver every three hours. “There is never a good reason to drive impaired. You always have options,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “Texans look out for one another. If you are celebrating Labor Day, make the choice that protects your friends, your neighbors and every other person on the road: arrange your ride before you start.” Alcohol isn’t the only risk. Cannabis, cold medicine, prescription drugs and any substance that affects judgment or motor function can make driving dangerous. Texans have better options: call a rideshare, take public transit, designate a sober driver or stay where you are. The safest plan is the one made before impairment begins.

What is TxDOT doing? ● A former beverage delivery truck now retrofitted to deliver sober driving messages will travel the state. ● Interactive activities on the mobile display will show why impaired driving is dangerous and why planning ahead is the Texan thing to do. ● TxDOT is also providing grant funding to law enforcement agencies across the state as they boost efforts to identify and arrest impaired drivers from Aug. 14 through Sept. 7. o This coincides with the national heightened enforcement period sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Drive Sober. No Regrets. is an important part of TxDOT’s Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative. Drive like a Texan is about embracing the pride, camaraderie and responsibility of being a Texan on the road. By making thoughtful choices, we can all help keep each other safe. 9/1/26 This easy slow cooker Salisbury steak with mushroom gravy is a classic comfort food dinner made with cubed steaks, onion, mushrooms, and a rich gravy. It cooks low and slow until the meat is tender and the sauce is thick and flavorful. A warm, old fashioned recipe just like Grandma used to make-perfect over mashed potatoes, rice or egg noodles. Especially good for the busy families on the run with sports.

Lake Fannin Volunteers
Press Release - Lake Fannin Volunteers have workdays scheduled on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 8:00-noon. We are mowing, weedeating, cleaning up the primitive camp sites, trails, and the Lodge. One big factor is finding the water leak in the waterline, in order to restore functional use of the Lodge.
What do you need to do? Show up with your work ethic, and whatever tools you wish to work with (weedeater, pruners, gloves, protective gear) and water.
What's open right now? The lake can be fished from the bank, kayaks can be launched, and the hiking trail. The historic area is what is behind the locked gate unless the volunteers are working. For more information, follow on Facebook Lake Fannin Volunteers or the Lake Fannin page of the county's website.

The True Story Of Ima Hogg
By Rickey Pittman In my Songs & Stories school programs about the Civil War and Texas history, I always include the story of Ima Hogg, the daughter of Texas Governor Jim Hogg, the first Texas governor to be born in the state. The true story of Ima Hogg is actually a Civil War story. Ima’s grandfather was a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army, who was stationed at Corinth Mississippi, but he took sick and died and was buried there. Sadly, the Yankees desecrated his grave. The General’s son, Thomas Ellijah Hogg, who was also Governor Hogg’s brother,
was so deeply affected by the grave’s violation that he wrote poems and a novel, The Fate of Marvin. The hero of that story was a girl named Ima. Governor Hogg was so moved by his brother’s tribute to his father and liked her name so much he vowed to name his daughter Ima, and when a little girl was born, he did. My grandmother used to tell me the governor had two daughters, Ima and her sister Ura, but that was a myth, as there was no Ura. Ima was a fascinating lady—a brilliant student, accomplished musician, a world traveler, a generous patron of the arts, and one who adored Texas! Ima never married, though she was proposed to thirty times. If you are ever in Houston, you should take the time to visit the Bayou Bend Gardens and Museum of Fine arts, housed in the former home of Ima Hogg. One year I was able to perform my songs & stories outside the mansion at their annual Spring Festival, one of Bayou Bend’s many events. If you have the chance, visit
nearby Quitman, Texas, and visit the Ima Hogg museum, the Governor Jim Hogg City Park and RV Park. The Texas State Historical Association says the park offers “a playground, basketball court, campsites, pavilions, and a nature walk as well as the Quitman Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. The site also hosts events such as the annual Old Settlers Reunion.” It will be worth the trip! If this story interests you, email me and I will be happy to email you a free song I wrote about Ima that was on my CD of Civil War songs, The Bard of the South. The song is titled, “The Ima Hogg Boogie” and I will send it as an MP3 that you can download to your computer or phone. I also give you permission to share the song with others, as long as you give credit to me as the songwriter and performer. Rickey Pittman, The Bard of the South. Discover Fannin County’s Natural Side — Become a Texas Master Naturalist
9/1/26
Joe Simmons Vice President Texas Master Naturalists Bois d'Arc Chapter - Fannin County
Do you enjoy watching wildlife, working outdoors, gardening with native plants, exploring the woods, or simply learning more about the land around you? Would you like to share what you learn with others and help make a difference in your community? The Bois d’Arc Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist program is preparing to welcome a new class of volunteers interested in learning about the natural resources of Fannin County and North Texas — and putting that knowledge to work through community service, conservation, and public education. Texas Master Naturalists come from all walks of life. You don't need to be a scientist, biologist, teacher, or experienced naturalist to participate. You simply need curiosity, an interest in the natural world, and a desire to learn and contribute to your community. New members complete a training program covering subjects such as Texas wildlife, native plants, birds, insects and pollinators, soils, water resources, ecology, land stewardship, and conservation. Training combines instruction with opportunities for hands-on and outdoor learning. For a rural agricultural community such as Fannin County, understanding our natural resources has particular importance. Farms, ranches, pastures, ponds, creeks, woodlands, roadsides, and backyards all contribute to the health and character of our county. They also provide habitat

for an extraordinary variety of native plants and wildlife. Whether you own hundreds of acres, a few acres in the country, or a backyard in town, there is always something new to discover. Education is only the beginning. Texas Master Naturalists put their training to work through volunteer service and projects that benefit their communities and natural resources. Opportunities may include native plant and pollinator projects, habitat improvement, wildlife monitoring, community science, nature walks, youth activities, conservation projects, and other hands-on efforts throughout the area. An important part of the Texas Master Naturalist mission is public education. Master Naturalists help connect people with the natural world around them and share reliable, practical information about Texas natural resources. Members may help with educational programs

The training, continuing education, and experience you gain through the program provide opportunities to develop your knowledge and share it with others in ways that suit you. Cleatis Marie (Greenwood) Pearce January 7, 1935 – August 22, 2026
Cleatis Marie (Greenwood) Pearce, 91, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, in Azle, Texas. She was born on January 7, 1935, in Celeste, Texas, to Joseph Bailey Greenwood and Edna Mae (Hollis) Greenwood. Cleatis married William “Bill” Pearce on April 27, 1957, in Fannin County, Texas. Together, they shared 47 years of marriage and built a life centered around family, faith, and love. Cleatis was a devoted Christian who placed her faith in her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Her faith was an important part of who she was and guided the way she lived her life. She was a long-time member of the Church of Christ in Whitewright, Texas. Cleatis was also a loving and devoted caregiver. Throughout her life, she selflessly cared for those she loved, including her father, mother, sister, and husband. She gave of herself willingly and without hesitation, demonstrating the compassion, strength, and devotion that defined so much of her life. Caring for her family was not simply something she did, it was an expression of the love she carried for them. Before her retirement, Cleatis worked at McNeil Laboratories in Austin, Texas. Following her retirement, Cleatis and Bill relocated to Denison, Texas, where they continued their life together until Bill’s passing in January 2005. After Bill’s passing, Cleatis returned to Whitewright and lived in her parents’ home, a place that held special meaning for her and connected her to her family and her roots. In 2020, she moved to Azle, Texas, to be closer to her family, where she remained until her passing. Cleatis will be lovingly remembered by her son, Tim Pearce and wife, Lou Ellen, of Azle, Texas; grandchildren, Jackson Pearce and wife, Christy; Jennifer Lynn Crites and husband, Steven; and Bradley Pearce and wife, Carrissa; great-grandchildren, Charlie Crites, Liam Pearce, MacKenzie Pearce, and Robin Pearce; and nieces and nephews, Amy Alaniz, Dan Howell, and Jeff Howell. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William “Bill” Pearce; her parents, Joseph and Edna Greenwood; and her siblings, JoAnn Howell and Kenneth Greenwood. Cleatis will be remembered not only as a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, wife, and aunt, but as a woman whose life was characterized by faith, family, compassion, and service to others. She gave much of herself to the people she loved, and her legacy will live on through the family she devoted her life to. A graveside service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Hogeye (Celeste) Cemetery, 2772 County Road 1566, Celeste, Texas 75423. Whitewright Church of Christ Minister Terry Northcutt conducted the service and eulogy. Pallbearers were Jeff Howell, Dan Howell, Rollin Meisenbach, Perry Meisenbach, Larry Henderson, and Charlie Crites.

PSALMS 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Jackie Rene Barnes
Our beloved Jackie Rene Barnes passed away on August 21, 2026. She was born on April 20, 1966, in Stanton, California, to her parents, Jack and Jean Bryton. Jackie devoted her life to Christ and to her family. To know Jackie, was to love Jackie. The Lord blessed her with the ability to light up every room she entered with her infectious smile. When most people think of Jackie, two words come to mind: joy and laughter. She was a loving wife to her husband, Jeff Barnes, for 41 years. Jackie’s four grandchildren meant everything to her- her most treasured title was being called “Gan Gan.” Jackie’s days were filled with frequent visits from her children and grandchildren. The back door was always open at Gan and Pops for whatever hugs, sweet treats, storytelling, or advice that was needed from Gan Gan. She treasured attending games and activities for her grandchildren, and was the best cheerleader and supporter. For over 30 years, Jackie worked alongside Jeff to run their cabinet business, JB Millwork, as the office manager. Jackie cherished every moment spent outside, tending to her flowers and plants or sitting poolside with family. She spent much of her time working tirelessly to make her house a home, paying close attention to every detail to make it a special place for her family. She was the most giving, thoughtful, and generous woman– a loyal friend, who loved making people laugh, and somehow always managed to brighten everyone’s day. Jackie was an avid animal lover, and had many family animals (especially bulldogs) that were so deeply cherished by her over the years. Jackie fought many challenging health battles throughout her 60 years here, yet she always found a way to encourage those around her with the Gospel. Jackie will forever be cherished and remembered by so many within our community as a pillar of joy, love, and sunshine. She is survived by her husband, Jeff Barnes; her children, Amber (Tyler) Bowman and Austen (Mallory) Barnes; her four precious grandchildren, Landry, Liberty, Lyla, and Baylor; and her brother, Tom (Lynn) Baker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Jean Bryton; her sister, Katie Realey Wallis; and her oldest brother, Gaylenn Baker. The family greeted guests at a visitation from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Trenton, 302 2nd St, Trenton, Texas 75490. A Celebration of Life for Jackie was held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Trenton.
C.W. Sangster
C.W. Sangster, 86, of Telephone, Texas, passed away on August 19, 2026. He was born on July 19, 1940, in Lamasco, Texas, and graduated from North Fannin High School in 1959, where he played basketball. After graduating high school, C.W. and his wife, Carolyn, moved to the Dallas area, where they built their life together and raised their two children, Danny and Michele. C.W. began his working career at Practical Drawing Company before spending 38 years at Varel Manufacturing. After retiring, C.W. and Carolyn returned to Telephone, where he enjoyed life on the ranch and ran Sangster Land & Cattle. He loved the simple pleasures of ranch life—sitting in the pasture with his cows, relaxing on the patio, and spending time with his family. C.W. loved his children and grandchildren deeply and was especially proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments. His grandchildren include a teacher, a technology professional, a manager, and two granddaughters who earned doctoral degrees—one becoming a physician and the other earning a Ph.D. C.W. loved spending time with his family and making memories together. He enjoyed road trips and family vacations, especially trips to the beach, where he loved watching the waves and the shrimp boats go by. He especially enjoyed taking his family and grandchildren fishing on the ponds at the ranch and teaching some of his grandchildren how to drive. He loved his dogs, a good seafood dinner, a good steak, and old-school country music, especially Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Sr. and Jr., Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and Buck Owens. C.W. loved telling stories about the past. You might have heard the same story 30 times, but C.W. didn’t care —and he certainly wasn’t tired of telling it. Those stories were a part of him, and they will be some of the memories his family treasures most. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Becky Sangster, and his brothers, Dallas Sangster and Bill Sangster. We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame.
Charles David (Dave) Stewart, 73, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and listening to his beloved Minnesota Twins, who graciously won the game for him. He will be remembered for his love of family, humble gentle spirit, and a simple man who loved sports dearly. Dave was born on September 3, 1952, in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Charles Wesley Stewart and Hazel Lee (Miller) Stewart. He graduated from Quincy Senior High School in 1970 and went on to attend Drake University, where he played collegiate baseball and graduated in 1974 with a degree in physical education and coaching. Dave continued his love of the game professionally, playing Triple-A Minor League Baseball in 1974 as a left-handed pitcher for the Seattle Rainiers. His love of baseball and collegiate sports remained an important part of his life throughout the years. Dave married Teri Kim Hicks on March 25, 1983, in Quincy, Illinois. Their love story began when Teri was his nurse, and Dave knew almost immediately that she was someone very special. They shared 43 wonderful years together, building a beautiful life and family with their three sons: Wesley, Matthew and Eric. Throughout his working years, Dave wore many hats. While living in Quincy, Illinois, he worked for the railroad and later at Blessing Hospital as a patient transporter. He later worked in quality control at a soybean laboratory. After moving to Texas, Dave worked as a substitute teacher and later as a facilities maintenance technician at a hospital. In every role he brought with him his strong work ethic and dedication. He retired in 2013 after a lifetime of hard work and dedication. More than anything, Dave loved his family. He took great pride in his sons and grandchildren and treasured following their lives and accomplishments. His lifelong love of sports—especially baseball—was something he enjoyed sharing with those around him. Even across the miles, Dave made a point to stay connected with the people he loved, whether through a phone call, a conversation about sports, or simply checking in to see how everyone was doing. His family will remember his strength, his loyalty, and the love he had for each of them. Dave was preceded in death by his father, Charles Wesley Stewart, and his son, Wesley David Stewart. He is survived by his beloved wife, Teri; his sons, Matthew (Kristin) Austew and Eric (Katy) Stewart; his cherished grandchildren, Faye Austew and Bryleigh, Oakleigh, and Boston Stewart; his mother, Hazel Stewart; and his sisters, Joann Zander and Susan (Mike) Gainer. He is also lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, extended family members, and friends. Dave will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His family finds comfort in knowing that his life was filled with love, family, and the game he cherished, and that his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. Visitation was held on 08/13/2026, from 4pm to 6pm at Wise Funeral Home in Bonham, TX. Funeral services were held on 08/14/2026, at 2pm at Wise Funeral Home in Bonham, TX, with Pastor Doug Peebles officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dave’s memory may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Clinic at gifts.mdanderson.org.

From Cheer to Fear While on the way to patrol the San Jacinto River, a Montgomery County game warden observed a vehicle driving erratically toward a bridge near the river. The vehicle voluntarily pulled into the same area beside the road as the warden. After approaching the vehicle, the warden noticed several beer cans in the passenger’s side floor board. The driver, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, denied drinking the ice-cold beer. The warden began a field sobriety test and when instructed for the hand coordination test, the driver began doing a high

ously been convicted for. felony. All violators were taken to the Leon County Jail. (Expired) License to Kill On the morning of Sept. 1, two Trinity County game wardens were on patrol when they heard a group of hunters constantly shooting. The wardens located the area and found six individuals hunting in an area baited
with milo. When they asked the hunters for their licenses, two hunters said they left it at home, another bought a license three months prior. The wardens informed the hunters that new licenses had only been on sale for two weeks. Several cases were filed, and 36 doves were seized. Restitution and cases pending.

Pitch A Tent And Hold A Revival!
Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas The year was 1934. A group of Christians in Charlotte, North Carolina began holding a prayer meeting in a pasture, praying specifically for a spiritual awakening to happen in their town. Under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, they decided to pitch a tent and hold a revival. They invited a famous, fiery evangelist named Dr. Mordecai Ham. Back Story of Mordecai Hamm: Mordecai Ham had been led to Christ by an evangelist named Billy Sunday. A man named J. Wilbur Chapman was the man who led Chapman to Christ. Who led Chapman to Christ? D.L. Moody! Who led D.L. Moody to Christ?
Edward Kimball, who was a Sunday School teacher in a local church in Boston. He felt burdened for young Moody, who was a boot salesman at Holton’s Boot Store. Kimball shared the Gospel with Moody and this young man was saved. Now, back to the Tent Revival in Charlotte: A local farm hand named Albert McMakin convinced a fifteen-year-old young man to attend with him, partly by letting him drive his truck to the meetings. Also, this young man was interested by local newspaper reports that this famous preacher called out local high school students for skipping school and participating in immoral activities. One night, this young man,
as he was sitting by his friend Grady Wilson, began to feel deeply convicted of his sin as he heard Dr. Ham preach about God’s love and the sinfulness of man from Romans 5:8. This young. man walked down the aisle to surrender his life to Jesus! This young man’s name was Billy Graham. In one month, September 2730, we will hold a Tent Revival. Think of how God used Edward Kimball, a Sunday School Teacher in Boston, and Albert McMakin, a local farm hand in Charlotte, to impact eternity for Christ! The next Billy Graham could be sitting in our tent revival because you invited him. For His Glory, Lyn and Lissa
Hello everyone! This week’s devotion comes from Romans 5:17-18. Have you ever wondered what the world would’ve been like if Adam hadn’t have sinned in the Garden of Eden? I’m sure it would have been vastly different that it is today. In these two verses, Paul explains how the sun of Adam and the righteousness of Jesus Christ affect each and every one of us. Because of Adam’s disobedience, death was brought into the world and began to reign over everyone. Not just a physical death, but also spiritual separation from God. Also because of Adam’s sin, all humanity was declared guilty before God. Sin and death became a part of human nature. Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” If
we accept the grace of God, His unmerited favor, and we receive the gift of salvation and righteousness through our faith in Jesus Christ, we will be restored. It is only through Him that we, as believers, reign in life instead of being ruled by sin and death. Verse 18 refers to the obedience of Jesus through His death on the cross. His sacrifice made the gift of salvation freely available to all who are willing to accept it. Through Christ, and Christ alone, we live in spiritual victory and eternal life. In summary, Adam’s disobedience brought sin and death into this world, but the obedience of Jesus Christ through His death on the cross brings the gift of salvation and eternal life to all who will believe on His name and accept Him as their Lord and Saviour. The lesson we can take from this passage is that God’s grace will always be greater than our sin, and His
grace reaches farther than sin could ever go. In 1918, Haldor Lillenas wrote this classic hymn that comes from the message in this passage. “Wonderful grace of Jesus, greater than all my sinhow shall my tongue describe it? Where shall His praise begin? Taking away my burden, setting my spirit free; for the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me. Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus, deeper than the mighty rolling sea, Higher than the mountain, sparkling like a fountain, all sufficient grace for even me! Broader than the scope of my transgressions, greater far than all my sin and shame! O magnify the precious name of Jesus! Praise His name!”
Life In Christ
Bro. Josh Stevenson
Living Acceptably Unto God
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
Paul encouraged the Christians to make decisions to live for God. Today, Christians are still called upon to make decisions to live for God. Christians are to decide to “present their bodies to God as a living sacrifice”. Each is to be “holy and acceptable unto God” (Romans 12:1). We are warned “be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2). “For if ye(Christians) live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye(Christians) through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live” (Romans 8:13). Christians are to have humility. We are told “not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly” (Romans 12:3). Christ is the great example of humility, “being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8).
We must reject evil and choose good. Paul wrote, “Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good” (Romans 12:9). Amos commanded Israel to “Hate the evil and love the good” (Amos 5:15). We are to have the attitude of having “no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather reprove them” (Ephesians 5:11). We are to love one another and choose Christians. We are told to “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another” (Romans 12:10). Peter told Christians, “see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently” (1 Peter 1:22). We must not be slack in our service to God. Christians are reminded to be, “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11). We are to serve, “Not with eyeservice, as men pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart” (Ephesians 6:6). Christians must not be negligent in prayer. We are encouraged to “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Paul said, “Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation;
continuing instant in prayer” (Romans 12:12). Luke records “that men ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Luke 18:1). Scriptures teach Christians how to treat one another, “Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality” (Romans 12:13). John asks, “But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?” (1 John 3:17). Jesus said, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). Paul told Christians to “Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not” (Romans 12:14). We are to be compassionate, “Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep” (Romans 12:15). Christians are to “take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:13). Paul wrote, “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21).

Countywide Continued from page 1
All voting machines and scanners are never connected to any internet or online for any reason. In addition to the equipment we have used for the past elections since 2021, we recently acquired enough Ballot on Demand machines (10) to begin implementing them in the November 2026 election. These machines will allow us to print the ballot for a voter upon request so the voter may fill it out by hand. We realize electronic equipment isn’t everyone’s
first choice. We are eager to provide citizens with another option. These ballots will still be scanned as the voter leaves the polling site. Our goal is to provide one machine at each polling location moving forward while still using our Duo Touch equipment at all locations as well. We are excited that Fannin County was able to meet all required technical capabilities to join the program. Fannin County has discussed and carefully considered the countywide program, measured the risks and needs, and now feels adequately prepared to implement this system. It is noteworthy to point out that we have been combining locations for the last three elections beginning with the General Election in November of 2025. The parties opted to use the same seven locations in March and May for the primaries in 2026. This has set the stage for reducing the number of locations permanently. Since the stage has already been set, and we now have all required technology, the timing to make this transition is perfect. At our public hearing on July
21st, the citizens were invited to speak in public forum. The Fannin County Commissioners’ Court voted in favor of applying for the Countywide Polling Place Program at a subsequent court meeting on July 21, 2026. Being selected is an honor, since only 10 counties (five large and five small counties) are selected each year. We strongly believe this will enhance our voters’ opportunities to vote. Fannin County stands ready to successfully implement this program and is committed to making voting more convenient and a welcoming experience for our voters. As always, the Elections Administration Office will continue to welcome comments, concerns, and questions. Please feel free to reach out to the Elections Staff or Jenny Garner, County Clerk. The Elections Office is currently relocating to the Fannin County Justice Center, located at 2225 N. Center Street, Suite 200. The phone number will remain the same and is 903-583-7488. Our email address is elections@ fanninco.net. See you at the polls!

Fannin County Criminal District Attorney John Skotnik Press Release
Tracy Hass, 59, of Trenton, was sentenced to 25 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institutional Division in a guilty plea to the offense of Evading Arrest/Detention with Vehicle on August 26, 2026. Judge Christina Tillett of the 336th District Court, presided over the plea. On October 3, 2025,
Trenton Police while on routine patrol observed a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle believed to be involved in a burglary the previous week. Subsequently, when the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver fled and began a highspeed pursuit down Coun-
ty Roads 4901 and 4900 before driving through a property. Persons at that location identified the driver as Tracy Hass. A records check showed an active warrant for his arrest out of Grayson County. The following day Fannin County Deputies located Hass at a residence in Trenton and attempted to arrest him. Hass fled out the back on foot but was captured and taken into custody. A search of the vehicle and surrounding area revealed tools and equipment which were related to various suspected burglaries that had plagued the community for a term of months.
Many of these items were able to be returned to their owners. Cases related to these items are still under investigation by law enforcement in Fannin and Grayson and Cooke counties. “The outstanding work done by law enforcement helped make this a strong case. The District Attorney’s office believes that enhancing this defendant – given his lengthy criminal history – was appropriate and this multidecade sentence will prevent this known thief from steeling from folks in our County for decades,” said First Assistant District Attorney Nathan Young, who prosecuted the case.

Notice of Public Hearing on Tax Rate 9/1/26
Fannin Farms Municipal Utility District of Fannin County (the “District”) will hold a public hearing on a proposed tax rate for the tax year 2026 on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at the following location: 6221 Southwest Boulevard, Benbrook, Texas 76132. Your individual taxes may increase at a greater or lesser rate, or even decrease, depending on the tax rate that is adopted and on the change in the taxable value of your property in relation to the change in taxable value of all other property. The change in the taxable value of your property in relation to the change in the taxable value of all other property determines the distribution of the tax burden among all property owners. Visit Texas.gov/PropertyTaxes to find a link to your local property tax database on which you can easily access information regarding your property taxes, including information about proposed tax rates and scheduled public hearings of each entity that taxes your property. The 86th Texas Legislature modified the manner in which the voter-approval tax rate is calculated to limit the rate of growth of property taxes in the state. For the proposal: Jamie Johnson, Helen Mullen, and Catherine Cole. Against the proposal: None. Absent, not voting: MacKenzie Reiter and Jonathan Ferreira. The following table compares taxes on an average residence homestead in this taxing unit last year to taxes proposed on the average residence homestead this year.
Total tax rate (per $100 of value)
2025 Last Year $1.00/$100 Adopted
Difference in rate per $100 of value Percentage increase/decrease in rate (+/-) Average residence homestead appraised value Total homestead exemption (excluding senior citizen’s or disabled person’s exemptions) Average residence homestead taxable value Tax on average residence homestead Annual increase/decrease in taxes if proposed tax rate is adopted (+/-) and percentage of increase (+/-)

NOTICE OF TAXPAYERS’ RIGHT TO ROLLBACK ELECTION If the district adopts a combined debt service, operation and maintenance, and contract tax rate that would result in the taxes on the average residence homestead increasing by more than eight percent, the qualified voters of the district by petition may require that an election be held to determine whether to reduce the operation and maintenance tax rate to the voter-approval tax rate under Section 49.23603, Texas Water Code.

PUBLIC COMMENT / PUBLIC MEETING. You may submit public comments or request a public meeting about this application. The purpose of a public meeting is to provide the opportunity to submit comments or to ask questions about the application. TCEQ holds a public meeting if the Executive Director determines that there is a significant degree of public interest in the application or if requested by a local legislator. A public meeting is not a contested case hearing. OPPORTUNITY FOR A CONTESTED CASE HEARING. After the deadline for submitting public comments, the Executive Director will consider all timely comments and prepare a response to all relevant material or significant public comments. Unless the application is directly referred for a contested case hearing, the response to comments will be mailed to everyone who submitted public comments and to those persons who are on the mailing list for this application. If comments are received, the mailing will also provide instructions for requesting a contested case hearing or reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision. A contested case hearing is a legal proceeding similar to a civil trial in a state district court. TO REQUEST A CONTESTED CASE HEARING, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR REQUEST: your name, address, phone number; applicant’s name and proposed permit number; the location and distance of your property/activities relative to the proposed facility; a specific description of how you would be adversely affected by the facility in a way not common to the general public; a list of all disputed issues of fact that you submit during the comment period; and the statement “[I/we] request a contested case hearing.” If the request for contested case hearing is filed on behalf of a group or association, the request must designate the group’s representative for receiving future correspondence; identify by name and physical address an individual member of the group who would be adversely affected by the proposed facility or activity; provide the information discussed above regarding the affected member’s location and distance from the facility or activity; explain how and why the member would be affected; and explain how the interests the group seeks to protect are relevant to the group’s purpose. Following the close of all applicable comment and request periods, the Executive Director will forward the application and any requests for reconsideration or for a contested case hearing to the TCEQ Commissioners for their consideration at a scheduled Commission meeting. The Commission may only grant a request for a contested case hearing on issues the requestor submitted in their timely comments that were not subsequently withdrawn. If a hearing is granted, the subject of a hearing will be limited to disputed issues of fact or mixed questions of fact and law relating to relevant and material water quality concerns submitted during the comment period. TCEQ may act on an application to renew a permit for discharge of wastewater without providing an opportunity for a contested case hearing if certain criteria are met. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ACTION. The Executive Director may issue final approval of the application unless a timely contested case hearing request or request for reconsideration is filed. If a timely hearing request or request for reconsideration is filed, the Executive Director will not issue final approval of the permit and will forward the application and request to the TCEQ Commissioners for their consideration at a scheduled Commission meeting. MAILING LIST. If you submit public comments, a request for a contested case hearing or a reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision, you will be added to the mailing list for this specific application to receive future public notices mailed by the Office of the Chief Clerk. In addition, you may request to be placed on: (1) the permanent mailing list for a specific applicant name and permit number; and/ or (2) the mailing list for a specific county. If you wish to be placed on the permanent and/or the county mailing list, clearly specify which list(s) and send your request to TCEQ Office of the Chief Clerk at the address below. All written public comments and public meeting requests must be submitted to the Office of the Chief Clerk, MC 105, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, P.O. Box 13087, Austin, TX 78711-3087 or electronically at www.tceq. texas.gov/goto/comment within 30 days from the date of newspaper publication of this notice. INFORMATION AVAILABLE ONLINE.
