A Matter of Balance

The Garage on 1552

Fannin County AgriLife Extension will be hosting A Matter of Balance, an eight-session program Thursdays in September and October from 10:00 am – 11:30, starting Thursday, September 3 at the Derrell Hall Education Center, 2505 N. Center Street in Bonham. If you or someone you love has experienced a fall or has a fear of falling, call the Fannin County AgriLife Extension office at (903) 583-7453 to reserve your spot. Space is limited. This program is open to all and is free of charge. A Matter of Balance: Aging comes with a variety of unique quirks, oddities, and issues, but falling and fall-related injuries are at the top of the list of concerns. In the United States, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries. According to a compiled list of fall-related statistics by the National Council on Aging, 1 in 4 Americans over age sixtyfive fall every year. Additionally, every eleven seconds someone over age sixty-five is treated in the emergency room for fall-related injuries and every nineteen minutes someone dies from a fall-related injury. In other words, falls are responsible for more than 3 million ER visits and more than 32,000 deaths annually. The fear of falling can lead to reduced activities, physical health decline, social isolation, and depression. Falling, fall-related injuries, and a fear of falling do not have to be a guaranteed part of aging. Falls can be avoided through lifestyle changes and participation in evidence-based fall prevention programs like A Matter of Balance. Please join us if you are concerned about falls, have fallen in the past, have restricted your activities due to falling concerns, or have an interest in improving balance, flexibility, and strength. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Bethany Arie at 903-583-7453 or email bethany. arie@ag.tamu.edu

Fannin County Commissioners Meeting

• 2026-2027 Proposed Budget Discussions Lead To Another Deadline Meeting Scheduled For Monday, August 31, 2026 @ 1:00 p.m. By Tim Meek The Fannin County Commissioners met on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 8:30 AM for a special meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court to Hear comments regarding the Proposed 2026-2027 Fannin County Budget. Quorum was established with all 4 Commissioners and Judge Cunningham present. Attendance at start of meeting was 18 citizens present with 76 participating on ZOOM. Judge Cunningham commented in the special hearing “I’ll start out by saying that we’ve got a bad budget. Football Politics. It’s not based on need, it’s based on greed. Continue to reward complicity. This year, like last year, the county judge’s budget’s being cut. This will directly affect my ability to look after the county’s interests and protect our citizens. Unfortunately, this is an apparent goal of certain individuals sitting here with me today. I think in the end, the truth will out.” At 9:00 the regular Commissioner’s Court began. 5. Public Forum. County resident Jason Walker spoke in Public Forum “We’ve heard a lot from that side of the bench there, about how transparent we want to be, and doing what’s best for Fannin County. So, I hope we see that our judge does that moving forward in these next few months, and I think one good way that we could be fully transparent and do what’s best for the county. We should not fight at all the release of the grand jury testimony and stuff. If we want to be transparent, let everybody see it, don’t fight it, save the county some money, and do what you continue to try to tell us you do, is what’s best for Fannin County, and be transparent, because that’ll accomplish both in one strike. You shouldn’t fight that. Don’t cost the taxpayers monies fighting your legal battles. Save us some money. Be transparent.” Molly Hayes of Tulip also addressed the Court “I just want to encourage the court to step up. Pat Fallon was here Friday evening. And it was pretty embarrassing. Our only elected officials to greet him were the Judge, Mr. Skotnik, and the Mayor of Savoy. Nobody, none of the commissioners, current or elected was here. The newly elected judge was not here. It was the perfect time to meet and greet our United States official that represents our district. It’s embarrassing when you are not here to greet officials. You are always saying you do more than road work. Then you need to step up. You need to come, and you need to make connections. We need outside connections to help us in this county. We need them desperately right now, because some of the Commissioners have failed. Our budget is a perfect example. We need outside help.” ROUTINE ITEMS: 6. Approve payment of bills – County Auditor. Approved 7. Approve minutes of previous meeting(s) County Clerk. Approved Fannin County Clerk Jenny Garner addressed the court and reported that the county meetings were five years behind when she took office. “I had absolutely no idea that was true when I took office. I have diligently worked, and

over the course of the last 12 months or so, we have produced minutes for over 4 years worth of that time, and we are continuing to try to get those completely caught up, while we also try to keep current minutes. One of the reasons that this was in this condition was because Tammy Bigger had been overextended so badly trying to run elections without enough personnel and trying to handle everything that needed to be done in the county clerk’s office. We still have part of 2025, and then some of 2026 that are, you know, still in progress.” 8. Emergency Medical Services Report for July 2026 – County Judge for Matt Brown of Allegiance. Matt Brown of Allegiance Mobile Health reported for July 2026: 166 transports, total of 202 calls, average response time was 12:38, longest response time was 32:41. 9. Report of monies received by the Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 in July 2026; $45,509.70 – County Judge (for JP 1) Report only 10. Report of monies received by the Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 in July 2026; $14,476.40 – County Judge (for JP 2) Report only 11. Report of monies received by the Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 in July 2026; $8,853.60 – County Judge (for JP 3) Report only 12. Report of monies received by the District Clerk office in July 2026; $28,028.51 – County Judge (for District Clerk) Report only 13. Report of monies received by the County Clerk office in July 2026; All Courts, $24,357.25 and Land Records, $36,074.00 – County Clerk Report only 14. Approve Treasurer’s Financial Report for July 2026 – County Treasurer. Approved 15. A p p r o v e Treasurer’s Investment Report for July 2026 – County Treasurer Approved 16. Approve release of the below securities from Legend Bank – County Treasurer Approved DISCUSSION ONLY ITEMS: 17. Status updates pertaining to the External Audit Findings of BrooksWatson & Co for Fannin County – County Auditor. Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple reported “Some of the findings we’ve already corrected, and some are still in process.” 18. Discussion regarding County Road mileage – Commissioner Precinct 4. Commissioner Kopf stated “it seems like our mileage that we’re reporting does not meet what we had before. And, so I’m sure it had something to do with the census, and our miles changed. I thought maybe we needed to have a workshop, maybe, to get together and see what all roads that each one of us are taking care of, so we can total it up and get at least an accurate count.” A special workshop has been scheduled for Monday August 24, 2026 @ 10:30 AM. DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ITEMS: 19. Discussion and possible action to approve extension of Fannin County Burn – Emergency Management/

Discussion and possible action regarding keeping County Judge’s part-time assistant position through December 2026 – County Judge. This item was passed on with no motion and no vote. The Judge will not retain a part time assistant through December 2026. Judge Cunningham responded “I want everybody to see this. Truth will out.” 32. Discussion and possible action to approve 2026-2027 Positions and Salaries – County Auditor. Commissioner Kopf stated

“I don’t like to have to balance the budget that’s not balanced, or approving the budget that’s not balanced. We’re gonna be in the red. But… You know, this is a difficult time for me. In the 4 years that I’ve been in office, this is one of the more difficult ones. Because we are coming up short. And I don’t like that. How much money, Alicia, right now, today?” Auditor Alicia Whipple responded that the current budget for fiscal year 2026-2027 has the county $1,078,698.25 in the red. Agenda items 32,33,34 and 35 were passed on. The Commissioner Court will hold a special meeting to make final budget decisions at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2026 33. Discussion and possible action to adopt Fiscal Year 2026-2027 Fannin County Budget – County Judge. Judge Cunningham spoke “I think the one item that’s out there still. As, we have looked at needing $250,000 for legal expense, because of where we find ourselves. With our insurance pool, or our risk pool, not covering us, because our… one of our officials had joined in a possible lawsuit against the county. Okay? That cut off our risk pool coverage. So the county’s gonna have to come up with that money themselves. And you sit here and you go, why does the county need to come up with that money itself? Because there are a lot of things that are privileged and need to be protected. And it’s the county’s job to make certain those goals are accomplished. I’m not going to go into them as I sit here in the room, that’s something for discussion in the courtroom later, but I’m telling you that $250,000 is not something that is speculative. It’s going to be a real cost in all probability.” Commissioner Waggoner stated “We’ve got until September the 30th to figure this out, but I think we need to do some cutting on this budget before we approve it.” The Commissioner Court will hold a special meeting to make final budget decisions at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2026 Item Passed On 34. Discussion and possible action to adopt Fiscal Year 2026-2027 Debt Rate of 0.045293 for Fannin County – County Auditor. Item Passed On 35. Discussion and possible action to adopt the 2026 Tax Rate of 0.384549 for Fannin County –

County Judge. Item Passed On OPEN DISCUSSION ITEMS: Open discussion items may be passed on unless discussion requested by a member of the Court or a Citizen. 37. Construction; Courthouse repairs and Justice Center – County Judge. The District Clerk has moved into the Justice

Center. The DA and County Clerk hope to move in August 25 however there are still issues getting all the required keys. EXECUTIVE SESSION(S) AND ACTION IF NEEDED: No Action Executive Session was held. Adjourn

What Do You Know About Human Trafficking?

8/12/25

It may be closer to home than you think Press Release - Human trafficking does not always begin with a stranger or a kidnapping. Many times, exploitation starts quietly through trust, secrecy, manipulation, online conversations, or access to a child’s vulnerability. According to Jaco Booyens Ministries, America is the number one nation in the world demanding sex with children. Digital grooming has become the new predator playground, with an estimated 750,000 predators online at any given time. JBM also reports that 60% of children have unknowingly engaged with a predator through online chat. Predators are not limited to one app or platform. They are active anywhere children and teens can be contacted, especially on social media apps, gaming platforms, and any digital space with a chat feature. The Fannin County Leader is committed to helping families understand this difficult issue with clarity and practical next steps. Parents, grandparents, churches, schools, and community leaders do not need more fear. They need tools, awareness, and guidance they can use. Each month, Jaco Booyens Ministries provides free Parent Community resources to help families better understand the risks children are facing online and offline. These include The Parent Brief, a monthly email focused on one important issue affecting families, along with helpful toolkits and guides such as The Parent Toolkit, The Summer Safety Guide, The Special Needs Toolkit, and The Launch Years Guide for ages 18–24. These resources offer practical information, conversation starters, checklists, and safety tools designed to help adults protect children with wisdom, awareness, and action. To join the free Parent Community, scan the QR code provided and sign up with just your name and email address. (Close out the pop up, not needed to sign up) Additional resources and information are also available at helpjbm.org/parentcommunity. Human trafficking is not just a global issue. It is a community issue. Protecting children begins with informed, prepared adults.

This slaw will add crunch and a pop of flavor to your meal. It's dressed with a sweet and tangy dressing the flavor just gets better the longer it sits.

Taking some extra time to toast the ramen noodles before tossing them with the broccoli slaw adds an incredible nuttiness and depth of flavor.

slaw ½ c. dry roasted peanuts, chopped ¼ c. cilantro, chopped 4 green onions, thinly sliced ½ c. Vegetable oil ⅓ c. granulated sugar ¼ c. rice wine vinegar 1 TBSP. Soy sauce 1 tsp. toasted sesame oil I tsp. garlic salt I tsp, garlic powder ½ tsp. black pepper

In a medium mixing bowl, mix together the broccoli slaw, chopped peanuts, chopped cilantro and sliced green onions. In a separate bowl whisk together the vegetable oil, sugar, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, garlic salt and garlic powder and black pepper. Whisk for 1-2 minutes until sugar has dissolved. Pour over the slaw. Mix well. Chill for at least 4 hours and toss with the ramen noodles just before serving. Enjoy!! PARENT ALERT: Porn Can Find Them Where You’re Not Looking Summer Elliott JBM Parent Community Apple Maps. Most of us know to think about browsers, social media, apps, and websites when we talk about pornography. But Maps? Apple Maps and Google Maps can display photos, business information, reviews, links, and other content connected to locations. That means an app most of us think of simply as a navigation tool can also create an unexpected pathway to outside content. And that is

the part I really want parents to understand. Pornography does not always have to be searched for. It can show up through links inside apps, social feeds, messages from friends, gaming chats, search results, shared devices, school devices, another child’s phone — and yes, even places like Maps. This does not mean we stop using parental controls or filters. Use them. Check them. Keep them updated. But don’t let the filter become the whole plan. What I would do today: Check the Maps app. Open

it on your child’s device. Search a few locations and businesses. Look at the photos, links, reviews, and outside content they can access. Review your restrictions. Check Screen Time, web-content settings, parental controls, and the apps that can connect your child back to outside websites. Look beyond the browser. Ask yourself: Which apps on this device contain search, photos, links, chats, or shared content? And then have the conversation. Try this: “Sometimes sexual or inappropriate content can show up in places you would never expect — even apps that seem completely harmless. If you ever see something like that, close it and come tell me. You are not going to be in trouble for telling me.” That last part matters. Because we cannot control every screen our children will ever encounter. We cannot guarantee that every filter will catch everything. And we cannot always control what someone else sends or shows them. But we can make sure our kids know what to do when something gets through. The question is no longer only:“Will my child go looking for pornography?” We also need to ask:“What will my child do if pornography finds them?” That is a conversation worth having before they ever need it.

Bad Budget / Bad Governance

By Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham

Transparency is key to good government. This is particularly true when it comes to spending. Taxpayer dollars should be spent wisely. Unless as an investment in the future, debt should not be incurred. Budgeting is key to this process. Unfortunately, Fannin County government has failed in this regard. Our proposed budget for the fiscal year 2026-2027 is a bad budget. Over the last half of my four-year term as County Judge, Fannin County spending has gotten out of hand. Backroom deals between our Commissioners seem to control the process. Dollars have been and are being wasted. Our budgeting process represents porkbarrel politics at its worst. Money is being used to buy support. The budget information below sheds a light on the problem. This information compares the County’s Increase/Decrease in amounts budgeted for the fiscal years 2024-2025 (“2025”), 2025-2026 (“2026”), and 2026-2027 (“2027”). The numbers speak for themselves. Be aware that the proposed budget, if adopted, will place the County approximately a million dollars in the red. Can we hold government accountable?

Doris Ann Mills

Patsy Reece Galloway

Patsy Reece Galloway, a longtime resident of Tyler, Texas, passed away on August 11,2026, in Austin, Texas. She was born February 27, 1936, in Honey Grove, Texas, to James Sherwood Reece and Jessie Irene Reece. Known to family and friends as Pat, she was a member of Pollard United Methodist Church in Tyler. She was previously a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church, where she was active in United Methodist Women. Pat earned her B.A. in History from East Texas State College in Commerce, Texas, in 1958. When her husband’s work took them to North Dakota, she was hired as an elementary school teacher in Tioga. She later credited that experience, and the enthusiasm of her students, with encouraging her to pursue a career in education. After relocating to Tyler, Pat returned to East Texas State University to obtain her teaching certification and later pursued graduate studies in library science. She taught at T.J. Austin Elementary School for three years before becoming the school librarian at Clarkston Elementary School in 1978. A natural teacher, Pat was passionate about reading and children’s literature and devoted her career to sharing that enthusiasm with generations of students. In 1988, she was selected as Teacher of the Year in recognition of her accomplishments and dedication to her students. She retired from Tyler Independent School District in 1998. Pat had a lifelong interest in history and genealogy. She was a member of the Mary Tyler Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. PSALMS 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Honey Grove Inspires New Texas Novel

By Ruby Sloane When I first began writing Suzanne's Locket, I knew I wanted to tell a story about lifelong friendship, family, and the memories that quietly shape our lives. What I didn't know was where that story belonged. Then I found Honey Grove. Over the summer, my husband and I have had the privilege of spending time in your community researching the novel. We explored the library archive room, visited with longtime residents, walked the downtown streets, and listened to stories that simply cannot be found in history books. One of the greatest gifts was spending time with local historian, educator, and

Honey Grove First Lady, Mrs. Barbara Caffee. Her memories of Honey Grove during the 1950s and 1960s, along with the remarkable resources preserved by the library and local preservation efforts, helped bring an entire generation to life for me. Those conversations reminded me that history isn't just found in documents—it's found in the people who choose to remember and share it. As the story developed, Honey Grove became much more than a setting. It became one of the novel's central characters. Suzanne's Locket follows Kennedy Morgan as she returns to Honey Grove during a crossroads in her own life. While exploring her grandmother's attic, she discovers a small gold locket engraved with the words Friends Forever and a photograph of her grandmother standing beside a young woman Kennedy has never seen before. Curious about the mysterious friend, Kennedy asks her grandmother about the

photograph and is drawn into a remarkable story of friendship, love, heartbreak, and resilience spanning more than sixty years. Quietly, and without her grandmother's knowledge, Kennedy begins searching for the missing friend, hoping to reunite two lives separated by time and circumstance. Although the novel is a work of fiction, readers familiar with Honey Grove will recognize the warmth of a close-knit community, the value of preserving local history, and the timeless spirit that makes smalltown Texas such a special place to call home. It has been an honor to learn from so many generous people who welcomed us with open arms and shared their stories. My hope is that Suzanne's Locket not only entertains readers but also celebrates the heritage, resilience, and enduring friendships that have long been part of Honey Grove's story. Suzanne's Locket will be released on October 3, 2026, with me joining the Honey Grove community during Davy Crockett Day to celebrate the novel's launch. I look forward to visiting with readers, sharing the story behind the book, and thanking the town that inspired it. More information is available at www.rubysloaneauthor. com/suzanneslocket

Come, Lord Jesus

Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas Our study through the Book of Daniel has brought us to the study of what the Bible says about the “end times,” or “eschatology.” I am reminded that in many churches throughout history you could hear the common greeting, “Maranatha.” It is the Greek word for “Come, Lord Jesus” and is the last verse of the Bible. In today’s world, we see the signs that seem to be pointing toward the imminent return of Jesus Christ. There’s so much happening in Israel and globally, and we

the Lord’s return. Titus 2:13 calls us to be “waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our Great and Savior Jesus Christ.” Philippians 3:20 points out that, “our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” So today, as we gather, we wait eagerly while still keeping our focus on the command to “make disciples.” Get ready by repenting of your sin and confessing Jesus as Lord. Then, STAY READY!

renewed courage. He also gives us the endurance to keep on keeping on when our journey is difficult. God doesn’t remove our difficulties immediately (see 2 Corinthians 12:7-9), He gives us the strength to keep faithfully moving forward through it. If there has ever been a time in your life where you feel like you have been waiting for a long time, this verse reminds you that time spent waiting upon the Lord is never wasted time. He strengthens us while we wait upon Him. In 1953, Stuart Hamblen wrote this classic song that comes from the message in this verse. “Teach me, Lord, to wait down on my knees, Till in your own good time

you answer my pleas. Teach me not to rely on what others may do, But to wait in prayer for an answer from you.” “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not grow weary; They shall walk, and not faint. Teach me, Lord, teach me, Lord, to wait.” If you are looking for a home church, we invite you to come visit us, and be a part of our church family and worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

are witnessing events that seem to align with biblical prophecy, shaping the world in ways that hint toward a one-world government. Jesus spoke of the days leading up to His return, notably in Matthew 24 and 25, giving specific signs to watch for. That being said, people through the ages have felt just as strongly about the signs of their times pointing toward the imminent return of Jesus. I believe God has intentionally worded Biblical prophecy to cause each generation to live with a constant expectancy of

This week’s devotion comes from Isaiah 40:31. This is a very powerful promise about trusting in the Lord whenever we are weary, discouraged, or waiting on Him to move in our lives. When we wait upon the Lord, we are trusting in Him rather than throwing in the towel or relying on our own strength. This is a demonstration of patience, prayer, and faith. Next, we see that God gives us renewed spiritual strength when our own strength is running low. God can lift us up above circumstances that seem difficult and overwhelming, which gives us a higher perspective and a greater,

The Exclusive Cross

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

One of the greatest demands of Christ is the commandment found in Luke 9:23; The Lord “said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” The condition that Jesus laid down is dogmatic, intolerant, mandatory, and eternally critical. Matthew records the words of the Lord, “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad” (Matthew 12:30). The emphasizes that you are either “IN” or “OUT”, there is not in between. The Son of God declared, “No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one and despise the other” (Luke 16:13). Jesus gave no “IFs”, “ANDs”, or “BUTs”. Jesus said “whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my

disciple” (Luke 14:27) and “whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). The Cross calls for death. We must die to “self”, “sin”, and “society”. Crosses are costly. Our three problems are “me”, “myself”, and “I”. We must die to all three. Light weight views of the Cross make weak Christians. The Cross must not be compromised. The Christian life is not always easy and happy. We must pay the price, die to ourselves, and give up our rights to ourselves? JESUS IS LORD! Paul reminded Christians, “ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's” (1 Corinthians 6:20). We must admit to being lost sinners and place our obedient faith in HIM. We must live the gospel. It is declared that “they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:14). When Christians “were scattered

abroad”, they “went everywhere preaching the word” (Acts 8:4). We know that we must believe in God, “But without faith it is impossible to please him” (Hebrews 11:6). We also need to know that God believes in us. The power to live the epistles is found in the accounts of the Cross found in accounts of the gospel; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. We need to remember that we are pardoned, not paroled and we are not saved to live as convicts. We must never forget that God lives in us “to will and to work, for his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13). Christians must become “vessels unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work” (2 Timothy 2:20). We, as individuals, must develop and maintain our relationship with God. We cannot afford to live in doubt and visit our faith, we must LIVE IN FAITH and ABANDON OUR DOUBT.

Fannin Master Gardener Daffodil Bulbs Project By Lauri Blake Each spring for over twenty years, a mass planting of daffodils blooms bright yellow in the right of way in front of the Keene homestead. Daffodils are the harbinger of spring. The idea began after David Keene received a card from a person who routinely passed by his property and enjoyed his mass planting of daffodil bulbs. And this was not the first such note David has received from someone letting him know what joy and happiness his daffodils were spreading! The next step was to identify an organization which shared the vision and knew the beauty of mass plantings of daffodils. Mr. Keene provided seed money, or more correctly stated, bulb money for the project. The Fannin Master Gardeners learned of his idea and got to work crafting a plan. This is how the Daffodil Bulbs Project began here in Fannin County! At this time, seven cities in Fannin County have agreed to join in the daffodil bulbs project after learning about the opportunity. What is involved? The participating city identifies

where in their city they want a “mass” planting of daffodil bulbs and provide assistance throughout the planning and planting effort. A “mass” planting for our project is one hundred fifty daffodil bulbs. The Fannin Master Gardeners provide knowledge about daffodils and coordinate the ordering and planting of the bulbs. As of this date, the following cities and organizations are participating: The City of Bonham, Ector Beautification Association, City of Honey Grove in conjunction with the Honey Grove Chamber of Commerce and Honey Grove Beautification Association, City of Leonard, City of Savoy, City of Trenton, and City of Windom. The daffodil bulbs were ordered and have arrived this week. Coordination of schedules to plant the bulbs will follow and all bulbs will be planted no later than mid September 2026. The Daffodil Bulbs Project has inspired two additional activities. First is an educational component of the Fannin Master Gardener winter gardening class which will be about

Unconditional Love In 1963

Mickey Durham 22nd Jax Chapman 23rd Jackie Adams 25th Ayden Harris 26th Joe Osborne 26th Kerry Grounds 28th Catherine Mendez 28th

“He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your god. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.” --Author Unknown Unconditional love as described by Webster is “not subject to conditions

or limitations” and that is exactly how dogs, especially the ones that I have owned, relate to people. Unlike cats, which seem to behave like people sometimes, dogs have an attitude and an outlook that I have always found unique. It does not matter if you’re well dressed, good looking, or even if you’re having a bad hair day, a dog will always love you back. All a dog wants is food, water, and attention—lots of attention. The more attention you give, the more the dog gives back. I know they can be stupid... Especially when they are

puppies. They seem to want to chew everything in sight, including but not limited to extension cords (maybe only once), your favorite plant, furniture, your shoes and socks and they really love to chew on your children’s toys. I have owned many dogs; however, there was not another like Sam. Sam was a large white German Shepherd. When I was ten years old, Sam was my best friend. He was also my protector and body guard. Even though we lived in the city, Sam was always loose and running with me wherever I went. Sam was an outside dog for obvious reasons. He ate like a horse, had terrible house manners and left white hair everywhere he went. When I rode my bicycle, Sam would follow and if I rode too fast he would bite at the tires until I slowed down. Sam loved to swim and play in the water. When we would have water fights in the front yard, Sam would jump and play just like the rest of us kids. When we

turned off the water, he would grab the hose and pull it until we turned it back on. Sam had a bad boy reputation in the neighborhood with all the other dogs, and they respected his presence. He also did not appreciate anyone trying to hurt my family or me, and he would respond accordingly. Sam was the enforcer of good will on our block and he seemed to play the part with a level of intelligence that was amazing. Sam was just a very cool dog! Dogs love us for who we are, not what we are. Our prestige or standing in the community, the amount of money we have, or the kind of car we drive does not make any difference to a dog. Sam loved me and I knew it. He knew I loved him and as a child, my love was also unconditional. A dog’s love is unconditional. We should take a lesson and look at people on the inside, not what we see on the outside.
