Proposed fee aimed at renter safety draws crowd to Monday night meeting BONHAM, Texas (KXII) The Bonham City Council has voted to table a proposed rental inspection fee after about a dozen landlords spoke out against the measure at Monday night’s meeting. The fee, if adopted, would require all rental properties within city limits to be inspected for compliance with the Texas Property Code before a tenant moves in. What the inspection would cover City officials outlined what inspectors would look for under the proposal. “We’re looking for functioning locks on each exterior door, door viewers, ensuring that the

apartment has smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, making sure it has utilities and that there is hot water,” officials said. Landlords push back Opponents argued the fee would ultimately be passed on to renters, adding to the cost of housing. One landlord urged the city to take a more targeted approach. “Rather than creating a new registry program that applies to every rental property, the city should focus its resources on identifying and addressing the properties that are actually generating complaints,” one landlord said. Another said the blanket fee felt unfair to property owners who already maintain their rentals. “To me it was kind of like a slap in the face to those of us who do take care of our proper-

ties. We already maintain everything well, we pay our taxes, we do our insurance — and to add another fee right now, I mean, we’re trying to keep everything as affordable as we can,” the landlord said. Jason Egan, a concerned landlord, echoed that sentiment. “I’m just asking the city to distinguish between bad landlords and responsible landlords before imposing a fee on everyone else,” Egan said. What’s next The council voted to table the discussion. Before the proposal comes back for a vote, the council said it will hold a workshop to address the concerns raised at Monday’s meeting, and they thanked everyone for coming out. No rental inspection fee is currently in effect. Copyright 2026 KXII. All rights reserved.

Emergency Well Repair Financing Keeps Water Flowing in Gober, Texas

Communities Unlimited (CU) For 63 years, a single well has supplied water to all 167 connections served by the Gober Municipal Utility District (MUD) in Fannin County, Texas. With no backup source, the district cannot simply take the well offline for an extended inspection or rehabilitation. On July 10, the well stops pumping. Rebuilding the Reserve Johnson determines that the district needs enough financing to pay the contractor's diagnostic bill, complete the estimated repairs and cover about 30 days of hauled or purchased water as a buffer. Repairing the well requires either removing the blocked screen and installing a new one or using a sand pump to remove the silt load by load. Either method could take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Ten percent of the CU loan is also being placed in a savings account to rebuild the emergency reserve the district had already spent. Once the screen is cleared or replaced, the district expects the existing well to return to normal operation. "It will be a huge relief," Johnson said.

Looking Toward a Second Well Johnson is still pursuing a grant for a second well so the district won't remain dependent on a single 63-year-old water source. She credits CU's quick response and affordable financing with moving Gober toward a solution. "With a catastrophic event like this, it's almost impossible for a small system to save enough to cover everything while still keeping water rates affordable. This loan allowed us to do that. This has given me peace of mind. I'm very grateful. Communities Unlimited has been awesome."

While all will remain in 21-1A, the district now includes more than three teams -- meaning not all will automatically advance into the 1A playoffs like previously. That shouldn't affect Savoy which vies this season for a 12th consecutive postseason trip. Returning three upperclassmen -- first or second team selections -- and an underclassmen superlative recipient of all-district notoriety in 2025 will make the Lady Cardinals formidable. Fannin County Sheriff's Office

Lake Fannin Volunteers

Cody Shook, Fannin County Sheriff

On August, 13th, 2026 at 6:00 AM the Fannin C o u n t y S h e r i ff ’s Office Investigations, Communications, Patrol and Special Response Team alongside SWAT Teams from Collin County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety served search and arrest warrants at three locations within Fannin County to counter a narcotics distribution ring. There were two locations within the city limits of Bonham and one that was in unincorporated Fannin County. As a result of the operation seven arrests were made. Numerous firearms were seized along with narcotics, proceeds from drug distribution and vehicles used to distribute narcotics. Additionally, one location on Lakeview Dr, Bonham was being utilized to house illegal aliens and four arrests were made. During the warrant execution distraction devices were utilized that produced loud noises, but no gunshots were fired by anyone involved. One suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended by a law enforcement K-9 Unit and did not leave the property. After a months-long investigation the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, Collin County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety and Bonham Police Department for their roles in this highly successful operation! The Sheriff’s Office will continue working to get narcotics activity and distribution off our streets to further protect our communities. The individuals involved in these trafficking operations pose a danger to the public, our communities and our families. It will not be tolerated in Fannin County. No additional information will be provided at this time.

God’s Garden: God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. PSALMS 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Redeeming The Time

Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas Today I begin my 64th trip around the sun. I have been on this earth for 22,995 days. That is 551,880 hours. That means I have been alive 33,112,800 minutes. It’s rather sobering to think of it that way. However, it does make me think about the verse that says, “Redeem[ing] the time, because the days are evil.” This verse essentially challenges me to make the most of every moment God

gives me - every opportunity he gives me in this day where evil abounds. There is no shortage of darkness in this world, but very precious little light. I recommit my life this day to, “let [my] light shine before men, that they may see [my] good works, and glorify [my] Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) Spending this Lord’s Day with you all is the best way I can think of to celebrate this day. Beginning each week among

the Lord’s people at church is always a great way to refocus our lives on Jesus and reorder – re prioritize our days on this earth. The Lord’s Day is a great day to set down a fresh marker in your life that declares the Lordship of Jesus over your life and a fresh commitment to honor and glorify His precious Name. Let’s do it together today! For His Glory, Lyn and Lissa

Fear Does Not Have the Last Word

Hello everyone! This week’s devotion comes from 2 Timothy 1:6-18. In this passage, the apostle Paul is encouraging Timothy to remain faithful to God, always have courage, and never be ashamed of Jesus Christ or the Gospel, even when following the Lord brings hardships. First, in verse 6, we see that Paul tells Timothy to “stir up the gift of God” that was within him. This means that he should never let his God-given calling become weak or neglected. The reason why can be found in verse 7, which tells us, “For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” God gives the believer courage, love, spiritual strength, and self-control. We should never let fear hold us back from doing what the Lord has called us to do. Next, in verses 8-10, Paul reminds Timothy to never be ashamed of Jesus (see Luke 9:26). God has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not because of our own merit, but because of His mercy and grace. In verses 11 & 12, we see Paul’s

confidence in Jesus Christ. Paul explains his appointing as a preacher, apostle, and teacher of the Gospel. Yes, his ministry brought him much suffering, yet he was not ashamed (see Romans 1:16). Paul’s confidence is not in himself, but rather in Jesus Christ. You may not know what tomorrow may hold, but you can certainly know who holds you. In verses 13-14, Paul reminds Timothy to hold fast to the truth he has been taught and to keep the good thing that he has been trusted with. This means than we should never abandon the truth of God when we are pressured by the world to compromise. Lastly, we see the faithfulness and loyalty of Onesiphorus to Paul. Paul asks the Lord to show mercy to him because of his faithful service. In summary, this passage is a call to courage and faithfulness. We should never let fear keep us silent, never be ashamed of Jesus Christ, and hold firmly to His truth. We are to use the gifts He has given us, and to remain faithful even when our walk with Him

brings hardships. Fear does not have the last word, but Jesus, and only Jesus, does. In 1833, Charles W. Everest wrote this classic hymn that comes from the message in this passage. “Take up thy cross,” the Savior said, “if thou wouldst my disciple be; deny thyself, the world forsake, and humbly follow after Me.” Take up thy cross, let not its weight fill thy weak spirit with alarm; His strength shall bear thy spirit up, and brace thy heart, and nerve thine arm. Take up thy cross, nor heed the shame, nor let thy foolish pride rebel; thy Lord for thee the cross endured, to save thy soul from death and hell.” If you are looking for a home church, we invite you to come visit us, and be a part of our church family and worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday! Bro. Josh Stevenson

The Conditions Of Pardon

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

When we fail or do the wrong action, we want to be pardoned. In times of mistakes, we want others to forgive or overlook. God gives pardon and he gives forgiveness, but the Creator has conditions. We find that “without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). God requires faith. Jesus emphatically stated, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me” (John 14:1). Christ also stated, “ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins” (John 8:24). Again, the Lord said, “that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Is faith the only requirement? No, we are also told, “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only” (James 2:24). Jesus spoke about another

requirement, repentance. The son of God said, “but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3). After the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, Peter preach the first gospel sermon about the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord, and when the crowd asked, “what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37), “Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38). Again, Peter said, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19). Paul preached that God, “now commandeth all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). The Lord required confession as a condition of salvation. “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32). Paul wrote “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). The belief and

confession is of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, the son of God. Christ required baptism as a condition of pardon. “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” (Mark 16:16). Jesus authorized baptism by saying, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19). Peter asked, “Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?” and then “commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord” (Acts 10:47-48). Saul was told by Annanias, “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16). Faith, repentance, confession, and baptism are not contrary one to another, but the Lord sets them forth as a condition of pardon. If Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords, then let us follow him and the conditions that He has set down.

Distracted driving and speeding put school children at risk

After more than 3,200 traffic crashes in school zones or involving school buses last year, Texans are reminded to drive safe and smart

Aug. 7, 2026 Why this matters • Traffic crashes in Texas school zones increased 12% from 2024 to 2025. As kids

across the state head back to school this month, TxDOT is reminding drivers to slow down and stay alert around schools to help prevent crashes and save lives.

PARIS – While kids and families are gathering school supplies, Texas drivers should be gearing up for the return of school-related traffic. That

means paying extra attention in school zones and always driving like a Texan: kind, courteous and safe. Crashes rising in Texas school zones

School zones can be chaotic places, with people in a rush and children not always watching for cars while they hop on and off buses or in and out of cars. Drivers can become impatient or distracted, which leads to mistakes. In 2025, there were 877 traffic crashes in Texas school zones, a 12% increase from the previous year. Also last year, 2,358 collisions involved school buses. Distracted driving and speeding were the most common contributing factors in these crashes. To help keep kids safe, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is urging drivers to slow down, avoid distractions and follow the rules of the road during its Be Safe. Drive Smart. Back to School campaign. Parents and guardians can also help teach their kids about ways to stay safe when walking or biking to school. •In the Paris District in 2025, there were 13 traffic crashes in school zones, resulting in no fatalities and no serious injuries. Tips for driving in school zones • Look for flashing school zone lights in the morning and afternoon and obey school zone speed limits. Traffic fines increase in school zones. • Stay alert and put your phone out of reach. Using a handheld electronic device while driving in an active school zone is against the law. • Stop and yield the right of way to pedestrians and other vulnerable road users in crosswalks. The Lisa Torry Smith Act of 2021 protects people in crosswalks and enhanced the penalties for failing to follow the law. Seriously injuring someone who is lawfully in a crosswalk is now a state jail felony. • Know where to go. Drop off and pick up your kids in your school’s designated areas, not the middle of the street. • Be on the lookout for children gathered at bus stops. • Watch out for kids who might dart across the street or between vehicles. Tips for sharing the road with school buses • Follow school buses at a safe distance. Remember they make frequent stops. • Keep an eye out for children exiting the bus and crossing the street. • Stop for school buses. Do not pass a school bus if you see flashing red lights or an extended stop sign, regardless of which direction you’re headed, unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway. Continue once the bus has moved, the lights stop flashing or the bus driver signals it’s okay to pass. • Violations can result in a fine of up to $1,250 for a first offense. Tips for children walking or biking to school • Use sidewalks. If there’s not one, it’s best to walk on the left side of the street, facing traffic. • Cross the street only at intersections or crosswalks. Wait for the walk signal and look left, right and left again before crossing. • Pay close attention to crossing guards and obey their instructions. • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street. Never assume a driver sees you. • Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or scooter. • Stay alert. Phones or other devices are distracting and can take your eyes and ears off the road. Be Safe. Drive Smart. is an important part of TxDOT’s Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe. initiative. Drive like a Texan is about embracing the pride, camaraderie and responsibility of being a Texan on the road. By making thoughtful choices, we can all help keep each other safe. Gnat And Fly Problems In The Horse Gnats and Ear Trauma

Because of the spring rains, the gnats are abundant this year, especially if your pastures are by a creek and trees. We have seen many cases of self-inflicted ear trauma because of an allergy to the gnat bites on the inside of the ear. The gnats are biting all horse’s ears but is a greater problem for the horse if it has the insect bite hypersensitivity. This horse itches his ear on a tree branch or other object causing cuts to the skin on the inside of the ear. The inside of the ear becomes raw, draining and painful. This summer we have seen three horses with hematomas of the ear. When the gnats are swarming and biting the inside ear, the horse shakes its head so violently that it ruptures a blood vessel under the skin of the ear, causing a hematoma and a thick swollen ear. This requires lancing the ear skin to remove the blood clots and stitching the ear skin back down. Of utmost importance is gnat control. A fly mask with ears or an ear bonnet worn 24/7 is a must to help prevent the gnats from

8/11/26

biting inside the ears. Applying insect repellant ointments or liquids on the inside of the ears to help repel the gnats; Swat, MTG (available at Tractor Supply), Deep Woods Off or Repel, Skin so Soft, our ear tick medicine, Ichthammol, and XO. Continue gnat treatment until a frost kills them in November. For those horses with an insect bite hypersensitivity allergy rubbing their tails, manes, belly, or chest, gnat control is also necessary. You must apply repellents twice a day 6:30am at dawn and 7:30pm at dusk because that’s when the gnats and small black flies are biting. Fly sprays work better on flies not so good on gnats. Diluted Skin so Soft, MTG oil, natural fly sprays Equi Shield work well because they are oily and fragrant. Repel or Deep Woods Off with Deet is effective. Boogie insect repellant lotion from the pepper plant works well on the belly. Treatment also involves a cortisone shot and antihistamine powder to stop the itching. Stable Fly Problems If you have a bad fly problem, it will take a while and stable management changes to get it under control. First look at how you dispose of your manure. That is where the flies lay eggs and hatch. Compost manure away from the barn. A big high pile reduces the surface area available to flies and heats up killing the eggs. Having the manure removed from the property is best. Feed through supplements such as Solitude or 707 Multi Fly contain growth inhibitors break the life cycle of the stable and house flies in the manure. If you start now with that it will prevent new flies, but you are still dealing with the older fly population (lifespan of 30 days) so it will take a month before you see a reduction in flies. Putting Fly predators on manure out in the pastures, compost pile, and stalls is effective at keeping the fly population reduced. They must be started in March/April and reapplied every 3-4 weeks for best results. It is too late for them to be very effective this summer. Feed thru growth inhibitors can be used simultaneously as it will not harm the adult fly predators, but the chemical in a barn fly spray system will kill them. Fly traps need to be hung outside the barn. It attracts flies so If you hang them in the barn, you bring the flies in. Sticky paper fly strips can be hung in the barn. Some barns use Golden Malrin fly bait on an empty feed sack or scatter it on the floor of the aisle way. If you have a fly problem, be watchful for draining eyes or cuts on your horse. The flies are attracted to these areas where they lay eggs. From this, the Habronema larvae develop causing a summer sore in the corners of the eyes or in a cut. Keep a fly mask on 24/7 and bandage cuts to prevent a summer sore. Cuts that cannot be bandaged can be treated with scarlet oil spray, Aluspray, or Silver Honey which work also as a coating fly repellent. Treatment of summer sores is difficult requiring surgery and injections into the lesions. Nothing works on the big black horse flies except your hand. The screw worm fly cases are at the south Texas/ Mexico border counties. Because of diligent sterile fly release and quarantine programs, they have been contained and have not migrated to north Texas. Hayes Equine

He was alone at the games; he never had parents, brothers, sisters or anyone to watch his games. Because of his home run power hitting and his kind, gentle nature

all the other parents and kids looked out for him and of course, cheered him on. The only self-esteem he received that I could tell was from baseball. I can still see his large frame, large arms and neck and his short stubby legs running the base line, after he had hit another home run. Most of all I remember his smile. A big

I remember the lessons I learned from watching how the parents supported the league and there were at least a hundred sponsors, banners and signs lining the outfield. It was all really for Wendell, and all the other kids that needed to be a part of something. Something that was special in it’s time and we didn’t even recognize it. I recognize it now, though, and I think of Wendell when I see a game or see kids playing ball.
