the Blue Orchard Nurturing Native Bees: The Mason Bee (like Bee) measures 5/16
07/02/19 Treva Gibbs, Advanced Master Gardener-Entomology As summer wanes, putting the garden to bed’ for the winter begins to occupy our thoughts. Our goals may include cleaning up and tidying our garden beds. Raking up all the detritus and bagging it for removal is often our go-to practice. However, if we don’t want to send all that organic matter to the landfill, or add it to our compost pile, we can leave it in place and nurture the life cycle of native bees. So, why should we nurture the native bees? We are well aware that honeybees are pollinators–and produce that delectable by-product, honey! Mason bees are pollinators, too. At risk of maligning honeybees, which only pollinate about 5% of the flowers they visit, mason bees

inch in diameter and 6 inches deep, with a securely closed back. They are active for 4-6 weeks in the early spring once temperatures consistently reach 55 degrees Fahrenheit (typically late February to early March). The life cycle of a mason bee takes about a year. During the 4–6-week active period in early spring, adult bees chew their way out of their winter cocoon. Male bees emerge first from the front of the cavity. Female eggs, which were strategically laid toward the back of the cavity, emerge a few days later. The smaller male piggy backs on the female during mating, and lives just a couple of weeks. The female spends the rest of her 6 weeks of life laying eggs in available cavities. Adult mason bees will not survive once temperatures reach 75 degrees Fahrenheit (typically late March to mid-April). Continued

What is the Mason Bee? Mason bees are members of the genus Osmia. There are 140 species of Osmia in North America. Some mason bees will be metallic green, while others are dark blue or black. The blue orchard bee or Osmia lignaria, is prized for its efficiency in pollinating apple, plum, pear, almond, peach trees. Their life cycle aligns with early spring vegetables such as peas, root crops that have gone to seed (carrots, radishes), and many wildflowers. Mason bees are solitary, cavity-nesting pollinators, no hive, no colony, no queen, (no stings!). Mason bees overwinter in hollow stems of plants or in abandoned holes drilled into wood by beetles, or in manmade structures (wood blocks). The ideal nest cavity for common mason bees

pollinate up to 95% of the blossoms they touch, thanks to their hairy bodies that drop loose pollen on all the flowers. Unlike the honeybee who carries pollen on their back legs, the mason bee carries pollen on their scopa, a dense patch of specialized, branched hairs located on the underside of the female's abdomen. Commonly known as belly flopping, the female mason bee bumps into the pollen when she lands on a plant. This pollen is easily transferred to other plants during her foraging forays. Mason bees flit and fly only 300 feet from their nest; so, placement of food sources and nesting cavities is a critical consideration. Mason bee cocoons can be purchased and their release staggered so pollination of fruit is maximized. They co-exist with honeybees and help reduce the stressful demand placed on honeybee colonies.

Fannin County Commissioners Meeting
• Public Hearing on the 2026-2027 Proposed Budget at the Fannin County Courthouse Set For August 18, 2026 at 8:30am By Tim Meek The Fannin County Commissioners met on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 9:00 AM for a regular meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with 3 Commissioners and Judge Cunningham present. Commissioner Self was absent. Attendance at start of meeting was 16 citizens present with 66 participating on ZOOM. 5. Public Forum. ROUTINE ITEMS: 6. Approve payment of bills – County Auditor. Approved 7. Approve minutes of previous meeting(s) – County Clerk. Approved DISCUSSION ONLY ITEMS: 8. Submission of 20262027 Proposed Budget by County Judge – County Judge. Fannin County Judge-elect John Tynan informed Commissioner Self in last week’s budget meeting that he will not need a part-time assistant when he takes office January 1, 2027. Judge Cunningham asked the Commissioners to extend his part time assistant through the end of December. The Judge commented “I want to say that the way the, budget’s going to be set up now, we’re going to be short of staff starting in October, so I’ll have 3 months where I’m short-staffed and will not be able to effectively do my job.” 9. Update regarding required Cybersecurity and AI training for Fannin County employees – I.T. Director. Dustin Morrow, Fannin County I.T. Director, said that emails have been sent to employees who still need to complete AI training. Dustin reported “We currently have 120 completed. I ran this report just before Commissioners Court. So we’re up to 120 out of 136 for the cybersecurity, and we’re up to 114 out of 136 for the artificial intelligence. I think we’ll be able to get it done. I’m not seeing any kind of pushback.” 10. Internal Audit Report of the Fannin County Payroll Department – County Auditor. Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple reported “The biggest thing that was found…well, actually, there were two things. One of them had already been addressed with the external auditors, as they dinged us on it as well, and that was segregation of duties. That has already been corrected. The second biggest thing that we’re having issues with is timesheets. We have elected officials and department heads that have delegated their employees the ability to enter, submit, and approve time, but they’re also doing their own time. And no one
should enter, submit, and approve their own time.” Judge Cunningham asked if the problem has been corrected. Alicia responded “It is being addressed. And when there is a follow-up, we will let the court know if it’s being addressed or not at that point.” DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ITEMS: 11. Discussion and possible action to set a Public Hearing on the 20262027 Proposed Budget at the Fannin County Courthouse on August 18, 2026 at 8:30am, with a vote on the 2026-2027 Proposed Budget to occur on the same day at the 9:00am regular meeting of Commissioners Court – County Judge. Commissioners court voted to set a Public Hearing on the Proposed Budget at the Courthouse on August 18, 2026 at 8:30 a.m. The vote to adopt will take place the same date at 9:00 a.m. Judge Cunningham again brought up his part time assistant that was removed from the 20262027 proposed budget. “I spoke earlier to the fact for me to do my job effectively, I need my temporary employee through the end of the year. And we’ll put it on a new agenda for a the Commissioners Court.” 12. Discussion and possible action to set a Public Hearing on the Proposed Tax Rate of 0.384549 at the Fannin County Courthouse on August 18, 2026 at 8:45am, with a vote on the 2026 Proposed Tax Rate to occur on the same day at the 9:00am regular meeting of Commissioners Court – County Judge. Commissioner Waggoner reported “And we’ve still got, some work to do and changes to make in the holding cell area. Right now, until we get something concrete on what we need to do on that juvenile holding area, I don’t think we need to fool with it until we get everything else done.” Commissioner Kopf asked “So why are we having to pay, at this point, to get something fixed correctly when they should have done it in the first place, in my opinion?” Commissioner Waggoner responded “There has been no communications with the architect in probably 6 or 8 weeks, we need to go to an executive session to talk about this.” Fannin County Clerk Jenny
Press Release - On July 29th, 2026, the Fannin County District Attorney’s Office secured a decade of prison time for the offense of Sexual Assault Child in the case against Trevor Wayne Brown, 27, of Bonham. The Honorable Judge Christina Tillett presided over the plea, which included a lifetime protective order for the victim, life time sex offender registration for the Defendant, and a waiver of the Defendant’s right to appeal. The case began when Bonham Police responded to a report of an assault on the 19th of March 2026. Patrol officers were able to determine that the Defendant, an
apartment neighbor, had befriended a minor whom he began talking to over a social media platform. Eventually that communication resulted in the Defendant engaging in inappropriate sexual contact with that minor. After the initial police response, the Fannin County Children’s Advocacy Center was able to conduct a forensic interview which resulted in additional evidence against the Defendant. “We commend the Fannin County Children’s Advocacy Center for all they do for the kids in our community, said First Assistant District Attorney Nathan Young, who added “not only does the Children’s Center help collect valuable evidence for prosecution, they also work tirelessly to help survivors with counseling and continued services long after the criminal proceedings have ended.” Lead investigator, Detective Jon McCann, diligently worked on the case; McCann obtained multiple search war-
rants for social media and biological evidence which culminated in his interview of the Defendant. During that interview, the Defendant denied any contact with the victim over social media until confronted by detective McCann with the evidence supplied by the Children’s Center and his search warrants. Faced with the evidence, the Defendant altered his story and admitted to both messaging the victim on multiple occasions, as well as having sexual contact with the minor. “It takes a team of people to help ensure justice for child victims”, said First Assistant District Attorney Nathan Young. “The excellent investigation done by Detective McCann and the lifetime protective order prepared by April Butner, Victim’s Assistance Coordinator with the DA’s office, make sure there is a just punishment for this defendant and a safety net for the victim for the rest of their life,” concluded Young.
Trevor Brown sentenced to a decade for Sexual Assault Child .......
Garner reported “we did get all of our applications submitted to the Secretary of State for county wide voting. And according to the attorneys there, we may have an answer before the end of the week on whether or not we’ve been approved. So, I’m excited about that, and hopeful that we’ll get that resolved pretty quickly, so we know what we’re doing moving forward. Jenny also reported on the new Justice Center move-in process. “As far as the, construction and the Justice Center, we were able to pick up the election cabinets that we bought from Tarrant County. When they found out that we only had one trailer available at the moment, although I’m sure we could have scrounged up another one, they decided that they would load up a trailer load of, shelves for us and deliver them at no expense to the county. So, I was extremely grateful for that. They’ve been extremely nice to us about the whole situation, and we paid them almost nothing for that shelving. So, I’m going to write a nice thank you letter to the Tarrant County Elections Administration Office for their support and their help.” EXECUTIVE SESSION(S) AND ACTION IF NEEDED: No Action Executive Session was held. Adjourn The bi-weekly Fannin County Commissioners meeting is recorded on video via Zoom. This recording also includes an audio transcript to the right so you are able to read what was actually said and the details/ discussions of each agenda item. The length of the meetings makes it unfeasible to report every comment made on every agenda item. Volleyball matches between Fannin County high school teams on Tuesday, Aug. 11, dominate the opening day slate to start the 2026 season. Those meetings, all listed as starting at 5 p.m., include: Bonham at Leonard, JV2JV-V; Savoy at Trenton, JV/V; Sam Rayburn at Ector, JV-V. Meanwhile, Dodd City, ranked No 4 in Class 1A in the Texas Girls Coaches Association pre-season poll, travels to Trinity Christian Academy of Paris for jayvee and varsity matches also starting at 5 p.m.

Most Fannin County high school head volleyball coaches return for the 2026 volleyball season. At Class 1A Ector, Dene' Adams equates the longest serving at the same school. She returns for her fourth season leading the Lady Eagles. Last season, Adams coached Ector to its first postseason volleyball victories in school history en route to the regional quarterfinals and a schoolbest 22 wins in the sport. Returning for thirdstraight seasons include: 3A Leonard's Lindsay Carter Giles, 1A Dodd City's Landon Dyer and 2A Trenton's Cody Garewal. Giles led the Lady Tigers to their first postseason

volleyball victory -- one of a school-record 34 wins in the sport -- en route to the area round, as Leonard made its first playoffs trip in the sport since 2019. Dyer guided the Lady Hornets (24-14) to their deepest advance in volleyball since 2020 with a regional semifinalist effort. Under Garewal, Trenton reached the Division-II bidistrict round -- equating the Lady Tigers' 10th volleyball postseason in the last 11 years. Meanwhile, 1A Savoy's Dani Glover is back for her second season, after coaching the Lady Cardinals to a bi-district advance. Elsewhere, Michelle Rodriguez returns for her third stint at 4A Bonham's helm. Rodriguez's second time
included in 2019 leading the then 3A Lady Warriors to their first regional quarterfinal appearance since 2008. It equated the second of backto-back postseason advances during said second stint. During her first Bonham stint, Rodriguez coached the Lady Warriors to consecutive 3A area round advances and had the team in the postseason each of her four as head coach. Additionally, at 2A Sam Rayburn, Amber 'Niki' Johnson will start her coaching career.

Neighbor helping Neighbor
Press Release - This September, the Four Corners Outreach Alliance Food Pantry will celebrate 14 years of serving families in need. While that milestone is special, what happened this year is even more remarkable. When our pantry outgrew its space, local contractors
21/14
stepped forward to help. Many donated their labor entirely, while others provided their services and materials at deeply discounted rates. Because of their generosity, our small, volunteer run pantry completed an expansion that will allow us to store more food, rescue more
donations, and serve more families throughout our area. This isn't just a story about a building; it's a story about neighbors helping neighbors. Every nail driven, every wall built, and every hour donated means another family can put food on the table. We would
love the opportunity to recognize the contractors who made this possible and invite the community to our public open house on September 10, celebrating both our expansion and our 14th anniversary; https://www.facebook.com/ share/1JLSppDZRA/ The pantry is located at 15642 State Highway 160, at the intersection of Highways
160 and 121, about one mile south of the Fannin County line in Collin County. We serve families throughout Collin, Fannin, Grayson, and Hunt counties, and we never turn anyone away. However the majority of the families we serve come from Fannin County (52%) and Collin County (17%). And the pantry is operated entirely by volunteers and
supported solely through donations. Over the past 14 years, our community has helped us provide food and hope to tens of thousands of neighbors. I would be happy to share more about the pantry, introduce you to the contractors whose generosity made this project possible, or arrange a tour before the open house.

New life for a Historic Treasure in Honey Grove Press Release - If you have been to Honey Grove lately you may have noticed some positive changes in the Historic Square. New and not so new businesses are creating some real “buzz”. Not long ago, the old First National Bank of Texas building on the southwest corner of the square was a shell of its former glory. With care and commitment, it has been transformed into a truly unique place to gather, shop, and stay. Now known as Bois D’Arc Hall, guests can enjoy beautifully curated lodging with original floors, walls, and ceilings. The first floor offers a dining hall for special events like wedding or baby showers, rehearsal dinners, birthdays, reunions, sweet sixteens, and quinceañeras. Look out for Hot August Nights put on by 1891 Parlor starting at 10am August 21st. BDH is a promising addi-
tion to the amazing HG Library, and other established retail and service businesses, like Lune & Lens, Eagerly Sought, and 903 Threads. It is the perfect place to unwind, stargaze, and experience ROOFTOP views of rolling countryside from all directions. This exciting project has sparked a revitalization effort with other historic buildings in the area as well. Clear Cut Choice LLC, the group that restored BDH,
also lifted and mended the historic St. Marks church on 8th & Market. It was blown off its foundation by heavy winds in 2022. This Lil’ White Chapel built in 1879 and restored by the HallVoyer Foundation in the early 1990s has to be seen to be appreciated. It is now available for weddings and celebrations. May We Take Great Courage
Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas I love John Wayne’s quote on courage. He said, “Courage is being scared to death – but saddling up anyway.” While I can relate to and appreciate the sentiment, I really can’t imagine Daniel being “scared to death” when facing a den of lions. Instead, Daniel shows us a supernatural kind of courage that only deep faith can give us. It is the kind of courage that
grows out of a deep, personal, dynamic, intimate relationship with the Lord. It is a “next level” courage that is coupled with the “peace of God that surpasses all understanding.” This kind of courage that is rooted in faith can help us face the most difficult situations and crises in life – whether it be a tragedy, a health crisis, financial turmoil, a wayward child – you name it. Is Celebrate Recovery For Me?
Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself: • Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others? • Is there something I wish I could live without? • Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control? • Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed? “Has it ever occurred to you that nothing ever occurs to God?” Our Great God is never taken by surprise or caught off guard by the things that come our way! God knew Daniel would be thrown into the lion’s den. He knew that Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednigo would be cast into the fiery furnace. He knew that His Son would die upon a cruel cross. May we take great courage in the fact that He knows what you are going to face before we face it. He goes before us. During a personal health crisis, I found great comfort in a song by Casting Crowns called, “Already There.” The chorus says, “When I’m lost in the mystery, to You my future is a memory because You’re already there…waiting on the other side.” For His Glory, Lyn and Lissa
The Marks of a Christian 6/2/20
Hello everyone! This week’s devotion comes from Colossians 3:12-13. In this passage, the apostle Paul is describing the character traits that those who belong to Jesus Christ should display. Because we, as believers, have been chosen by God, made holy through Jesus Christ, and are deeply loved by Him, we ought to reflect His character in how we treat those around us. We must always clothe ourselves with Christlike attributes, just as we put on our clothes every day. This Christlike attitude should be part of our daily routine. “Bowels of mercy” is an older expression which means having deep compassion and true heartfelt mercy toward others. We must always remember to treat those around us with goodness, generosity,
and care. We must also have a humble attitude, which means putting others before ourselves rather than having pride. When we are meek, our strength is under control, unlike weakness, and we have a gentle spirit that trusts in the Lord. “Longsuffering” means having patience when enduring trials or the faults of others without letting our anger get the better of us. We must patiently bear with each other’s weaknesses or imperfections, and freely forgive those who have wronged us. The standard of our forgiveness is how Jesus Christ forgave us. Because He has completely forgiven us, we are called to forgive others with that same grace. Mercy, humility, patience, and forgiveness are more than just good moral qualities; they
are evidence of Jesus Christ working in a believer’s life. In 1782, John Fawcetf wrote this classic hymn that comes from the message in this passage. “Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Before our Father’s throne we pour our ardent prayers; our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, our comforts and our cares. We share our mutual woes, our mutual burdens bear, and often for each other flows the sympathizing tear. From sorrow, toil, and pain, and sin, we shall be free; and perfect love and friendship reign through all eternity.”
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
body, kingdom is the group of the saved. “Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved” (Acts 2:47). There is just one way to worship pleasing to God. “By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain” (Hebrews 11:4). Cain had the opportunity to worship by faith. “The LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?” (Genesis 4:6-7). “Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not” (Leviticus 10:1). In the New Testament we find that everyone is accountable to “the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2), because Jesus said “the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day” (John 12:48). “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must
worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). Since there is one body, church, kingdom as there is one God, we are to only serve the one God. Jesus preached, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and wealth” (Matthew 6:24). We must be “turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God” (1 Thessalonians 1:9). Jesus told the devil “Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Matthew 4:10). Paul reminds Christians that “whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him” (Colossians 3:17). “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear” (Hebrews 12:28).

The One Kingdom
Through the writings of Paul, the Holy Spirit uses the kingdom, church, and body as interchangeable terms. Christians had been translated into this kingdom of Christ. “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son” (Colossians 1:13). It is stated that there is one body. “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:3-6). Paul had stated to the Christians in Ephesus that God “hath put all things under Christ’s feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body” (Ephesians 1:22-23). Luke recorded that the church,

Home Country Slim Randles 8/11/26
Chickens have forever had a place in our hearts and on our tables. Why is that? Well … why not? And so I’d like you to come with me back to the summer of 1970, ‘way up north of Fairbanks, Alaska, to what was once the thriving gold mining village of Chicken, Alaska. I was on my way, hitchhiking with a canoe, to paddle down a 500-mile stretch of the Yukon River and to see the cabin where Jack London spent the winter once upon a time. Just as an aside here, hitchhiking with a canoe, or with a sled and 10 dogs, would make a lengthy how-to book all by themselves. It doesn’t sound easy, does it? It isn’t. So what I would do on these “adventures” of mine, (my boss, Larry Fanning, referred to them as Slim’s tin-cup trips because of all the scrounging I did) is go neat places and interview great people, and write stuff. My column in the Anchorage Daily News … brace yourself … was called “Slim’s Column.” Truth in advertising. So I arrived in Chicken, Alaska, only to find I’d nearly doubled the local population. In the far-distant past, Chicken was an actual town. When the gold gave out, so did Chicken. So what was left was “the business” consisting of a gas pump, a coffee pot, some postage stamps and a couple of nice folks. But there was something else, too. There was not only an outhouse there, but it was electrically lighted. So where should I write my column? In an electrically lighted outhouse in Chicken, Alaska. Naturally. The raising of poultry this far north is uncommon, too many local varmints, including any resident sled dogs, eat them. So how did this gold camp get its name? Ahh … the reason for that column on the wooden “desk” beneath that 20-watt bulb. Chicken, Alaska, got its name because none of the miners there knew how to spell ptarmigan.

righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Ona Thronton Graves
With profound love and deep gratitude for a life well lived we announce the passing of Ona Thronton Graves, who entered her eternal home on July 25, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on February 10, 1939, in Hope, Arkansas, Ona later made her home in Dodd City, Texas, where she built a life centered on faith, family, and unconditional love. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and friend whose legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched. Ona proudly embraced her role as a lifelong homemaker, often referring to herself with a smile as a “Domestic Engineer.” She believed there was no greater calling than caring for her family, creating a warm and welcoming home, and making sure those she loved always knew they belonged. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, and countless treasured memories. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Whether she was collecting owls, creating beautiful woodworking projects, crafting ceramics, working word puzzles, casting a fishing line, or listening to Gospel music—especially the beloved Gaithers—Ona appreciated the blessings that each day brought. Her hobbies reflected her creativity, patience, and appreciation for God’s creation. Ona was known for her loving heart, spirited nature, and unwavering convictions. She could be mildly opinionated and was certainly set in her ways, qualities that only made her more endearing to those who knew and loved her. She spoke her mind with honesty, loved fiercely, and stood faithfully beside her family through every season of life. She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 wonderful years, Harold Edward Graves, whose lifelong love and devotion were a beautiful testament to the sacred bond of marriage. She also leaves behind her children: Glenda (Joe Michael) Chambless of Kemp, Texas; Dee Garza of Dodd City, Texas; William (Kathy) Graves of Dodd City, Texas; Larry Graves of Dodd City, Texas; and Russell (Kristy) Graves of Dodd City, Texas. Ona’s greatest joy was her family. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 3 great- great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immeasurable happiness to her life. She is also survived by her sisters, Delphia Webb, Ruby Coble, and Tommie Hobbs, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will cherish her memory forever. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Maurice Thornton and Merle Thornton, and her brother, Deanie Thornton. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we rejoice in knowing that Ona’s faith has become sight and that she now rests in the presence of her Savior. The love she shared, the lessons she taught, and the memories she created will continue to guide her family for generations to come. “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:23 Ona’s life reminds us that true greatness is found not in worldly accomplishments but in faithfully loving and serving others. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in our hearts. The funeral is Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 2pm. Visitation is 1hr prior to service with burial following at Hilger Cemetery.
God’s Garden: God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

Native Bees Continued from page 1
The female creates several chambers in the nesting cavity. The back of the tunnel is packed with a mixture of pollen and nectar before she lays a single egg on the pollen (bee bread). She then builds a thin mud wall partition and repeats this cell-stacking process. When the tube/tunnel/cavity is full, she seals the outer end with a thick mud plug. Females control the sex of their offspring. She lays the fertilized eggs toward the back of the cavity (which will become females) and lays unfertilized eggs in the front of the cavity. Common wisdom regarding this practice says the mother bee is protecting the female eggs from woodpeckers and other predators. Any female bee who has not mated will lay unfertilized eggs. A single female will lay about 15 to 20 eggs in her short lifespan. Once the cell is complete, a marvelous change begins! Inside the cavity, the egg hatches into larva within 7 days. During the next 4-6 weeks the larva eat the bee bread, growing and molting through multiple stages. By late summer the fully grown larva spins a waterproof silk cocoon inside its mud cell. The larva enters the pupa stage and transforms into an adult bee. The fully developed adult bee rests inside the cocoon through the fall and winter (a dormant state known as diapause, pronounced DYuh-pawz). To survive the cold, the adult bee metabolizes internal fat reserves until the spring temperatures reach the necessary 55 degrees Fahrenheit. How do we nurture Mason bees? Since Mason bees emerge early in the spring, we can nurture them by providing food sources. According to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, plants that are good sources of nectar and/or pol-

len include: Phacelia congesta, native salvias, redbud trees, coneflowers, American Red Columbine, bee balm (Monarda species), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), Slender Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium), Sunflower (Helianthus species), elderberry (Sambuca), joe-pye weed (Eutrochium), raspberry (Rubus), and bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis). For those of us who have orchards, cover crops are beneficial and Mason bees thrive on clover and vetch. Since Mason bees are cavity nesting insects, we can nurture them by providing nesting materials. Many of their food sources can become nesting cavities because they have hollow stems. Some plants in this category include bee balm, purple coneflower, Mountain Mint, Sunflower, elderberry, joe-pye weed, and raspberry. When tidying up garden beds, we can cut back dead flower stalks from 8 to 24 inches in height and leave the stem stubble which may become nest cavities. We can also leave some dead wood that has holes drilled by beetles. Place this dead wood in a south facing area protected from wind and rain. Since mulch obscures the ground, we can leave some unmulched areas so the mason bees have access to mud for their nest building. We can provide a small, wet patch of clay-rich soil nearby, as female mason bees require mud to seal their nesting tubes. If we wish to provide Mason bees’ nest using wood blocks, we can purchase them. If you purchase wood blocks, be keenly aware that they require annual cleaning and sanitizing. Mason bees are susceptible to tiny parasitic Mono wasps (Monodontomerus), Houdini flies (Cacoxenus indagator), hairy-footed pollen mites (Chaetodactylus krombeini) and fungal diseases (chalkbrood). The wood blocks create a colony situation for bees that are solitary and give rise to the population of parasites that destroy them. I am fascinated by these pollinators! As I improve my gardening practices, I will give space to nurturing them by incorporating native plants which provide food and nesting habitat. A Lot Is Happening at the Fannin County Family Crisis Center This Fall
Press Release - Fall is shaping up to be a busy season at Fannin County Family Crisis Center, and we're excited to share several opportunities for our community to get involved while also learning more about the services available right here in Fannin County. Many people don't realize that all of our services are free and confidential. We serve adults who have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault, as well as non-offending family members and children. Whether someone needs safety planning, legal advocacy, counseling, support groups, hospital or court accompaniment, transportation, help with Crime Victims' Compensation, or simply someone to listen, we're here to help. We also operate a community food pantry because we know that sometimes meeting basic needs is the first step toward healing. Become a 24/7 Hotline Vol-
unteer One of the most rewarding ways to get involved is by becoming one of our 24/7 hotline volunteers. Our next Volunteer Hotline Training begins Tuesday, September 29 and includes eight weekly training sessions through November 17, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lunch is provided, and attendance at all eight sessions is required. The person answering our hotline is often the first person a survivor has ever reached out to. Volunteers provide hope, support, information, and a calm voice during some of life's most difficult moments. We provide all the training you need. You simply bring a heart for helping others. Contact Katelynne, our Volunteer Coordinator at 903583-7694 or katelynne@ fccrisiscenter.org for more information. Partners in Hope Training:
Building Bridges Between Faith Communities and Survivor Services We're also excited to offer our Partners in Hope: Building Bridges Between Faith Communities and Survivor Services training on Thursday, September 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This free lunch-and-learn is designed for pastors, church leaders, and others serving within faith communities. Together, we'll discuss how to recognize the signs of abuse, respond in a trauma-informed way, connect survivors with resources, and build stronger partnerships between faith communities and local survivor services. Faith leaders are often someone a survivor trusts first, and this training helps equip them to respond with compassion, safety, and hope. Contact Cailee, our Outreach Coordinator at 903-583-7694
or cailee@fccrisiscenter.org for more information. Whether it's a 15-minute staff meeting or a more indepth training, our goal is to help more people recognize abuse, know how to respond, and understand where to turn for help. You never know when the information shared during one presentation could help someone in your workplace, a family member, a friend, or even save a life. USDA Reminds Texas Producers to File Crop Acreage Reports, Announces Modernized Pilot Acreage Reporting Process
COLLEGE STATION, Texas, June 30, 2026 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) today announced an acreage reporting modernization pilot program that is a foundational part of the administration’s One Farmer, One File effort. FSA is focused on creating a more efficient, consistent, and customer-focused acreage reporting experience for producers and FSA employees. In Texas, Fisher County is part of the pilot project and producers in the county will use the streamlined acreage reporting process for springplanted crops. After spring planting is complete, agricultural producers should make an appointment with their FSA county office to complete crop acreage reports before the applicable deadline. “As we move away from paper maps to an electronic interface for acreage reporting, I’m excited that producers in Fisher County have the opportunity to participate in this modernization effort,” said Dan Hunter, State Executive Director in Texas. “Please . Appropriate documentation must be provided to the county office.
Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) policy holders should note that the acreage reporting date for NAP-covered crops is the acreage reporting date or 15 calendar days before grazing or crop harvesting begins, whichever is earlier. Contact FSA to confirm cropspecific deadlines for NAPcovered crops. Producers with perennial forage crops should check with their local FSA office to see if their crops are eligible for continuous certification, which rolls the certified acreage forward each year until a change is made. Prevented Planted Acreage Producers should also report the crop acreage they intended to plant but were unable to because of a natural disaster, including drought. Prevented planted acreage must be reported on form CCC-576, Notice of Loss, no later than 15 calendar days after the final planting date as established by FSA and USDA’s Risk Management Agency.
