balancing reservoir south of Lake Ralph Hall is finished, with workers now testing the new facility. The smaller reservoir is located about 27 miles from the lake and features two “large bathtubs” (see below). It separates two sections of pipeline from the lake: one where water is pumped and another section where water flows by gravity. Once water is piped to the balancing reservoir, gravity takes over and transports the water to the Chapman

Lake Pipeline and eventually to the water treatment plant. Having two sides provides flexibility for maintenance and additional water storage. About the Balancing Reservoir: ● Each side can hold 15 million gallons of water. ● The project was finished and testing is underway.

● Filling of the first cell began in early June. Lake Ralph Hall photo

Postal Service Names Top Cities and States for Dog Attacks on Mail Carriers

USPS National Dog Bite Awareness Events Kick Off June 1 TEXAS — Last year, U.S. Postal Service employees suffered more than 5,200 dog attacks. To combat this, USPS is sharing vital safety guidance to help pet owners protect mail carriers and ensure uninterrupted mail delivery. A monthlong Dog Bite Awareness campaign begins Monday, June 1, with the theme of “Don’t turn your back on dog bite prevention.” “Every single day, our postal employees serve their communities across dynamic, fast-changing environments,” said Leeann Theriault, employee safety and health awareness manager. “Preventing dog-related incidents requires constant, shared vigilance. This campaign reinforces a vital truth: Animal behaviors can change in an instant, but proactive awareness from both our carriers and the customers we serve can stop painful injuries before they ever happen." Keep Mail Delivery Safe: Tips for Dog Owners Even the most predictable pets can act unpredictably when defending territory or feeling startled. Because dogs rely on protective instincts, owners must manage their dogs during delivery times to prevent accidents. Keep your dog in a separate

closed room before opening the front door. If you step outside, ensure the door is firmly latched. Always use a leash if your dog is outdoors during mail delivery. Finally, never accept mail directly from a carrier in the presence of your dog, and teach children to avoid doing so, as dogs can misinterpret the interaction as a threat. Sign up for USPS Informed Delivery and See the Mail on Your Electronic Device Before It Arrives By using the free Informed Delivery feature, customers can digitally preview incoming mail and packages from a computer, tablet or mobile device. Over 70 million customers have enrolled since the service was launched in 2017. Sign up at informeddelivery.usps.com. This service can help dog owners anticipate when their carrier might arrive. The Financial and Emotional Damage of a Dog Attack Protecting your carrier protects your wallet. If your dog attacks a postal worker, you could owe thousands of dollars out of pocket to cover their medical care, lost shifts, replacement clothing and emotional distress. “I was walking my route when a dog jumped the fence and lunged at me,” said San Antonio Letter Carrier Fiona Hudson. “I used my dog repellent and mail bag to defend myself, but it was too late. I was rushed to the hos-

pital bleeding, with a broken bone, a severe arm sprain and was barely able to move. While my physical wounds have healed, the trauma of that vicious attack stays with me. Customers must take responsibility and secure their dogs during delivery hours.” Take Action: Unsecured Dogs Stop Mail Delivery When a carrier feels unsafe because of a roaming dog, mail service can be temporarily suspended. Until the carrier feels safe enough to restart delivery, the mail will have to be picked up at the dog owner’s local Post Office. If a carrier feels a house or neighborhood is unsafe to deliver to and there is no way to inform residents their mail service has been suspended, the residents will have to contact the supervisor at their local Post Office for more information. The residents would also have to pick up their mail at the Post Office until it is safe to resume delivery. If a dangerous dog issue is not resolved, owners can be required to rent a Post Office Box to receive mail. Armed with Awareness: How Carriers Prevent Dog Bites Postal carriers undergo extensive safety training to spot potential canine hazards. Carriers are instructed to remain vigilant and exer-

cise the precautions below: ● Announce entry. Rattle a fence gate or make a nonthreatening sound before walking into a yard. ● Maintain visual contact. Never startle an animal and always keep eyes locked on the dog. ● Assume dog poses risk Avoid petting or feeding any animal on the assumption that any dog has the potential to bite. ● Block exits. Secure outward-swinging doors with a foot to prevent a pet from escaping. If a dog attacks, carriers are trained to stand their ground, use their mail satchel as a protective shield and deploy dog repellent if necessary. To stay ahead of these risks, USPS also provides carriers with awareness tools, including handheld scanners that feature built-in dog warning alerts and physical warning cards that are placed into mail sorting cases to alert a carrier of a dog at a certain address. As a County we continually to fail at doing more with less. We find it difficult, if not impossible, to budget effectively, to set a budget and live within it. Once a year as County Judge I have been charged with proposing a County budget to the Commissioners Court for approval. A county budget should, once priorities are established, balance needs against resources. In doing so I have asked myself three questions: (1) What do our citizens need?; (2) What do our citizens want?; and (3) What can the County afford? I am in the process of proposing a budget for the next fiscal year (October 1, 2026-September 30,2027). A budget that would eliminate

money doing so if properly budgeted. We need to step away from the pork barrel. We need to hold our officials accountable. As a wiseman once said, “a politician has one goal and that is to remain in office.” Sadly, some of our officials lack the competency and commitment to fulfill their duties. Yet that does not prevent them from making false claims and promises. Promises that seldom align with their hidden agendas, actual goals and back-room deals. They go along to get along, “One hand washes the other.” They trade favors at the taxpayer's expense. Politicians unlike the true public servant, use public office as an opportunity to enrich themselves and reward their supporters. They take care of their family and

waste, maximizing the bang for the buck. Several of my commissioners have been less than cooperative, apparently placing a very high value on their autonomy, and “privacy.” For this reason alone, I suspect my efforts will fail. Why the failure? Why the disconnect? It is not just our County’s problem; it’s an American problem with most government- local, state, and federal. Why does government seemingly betray public trust and waste taxpayer dollars? Given some thought, the answer isn’t that complicated… “It’s just Politics.” What’s the Answer? We need transparency and planning. We need to be honest with one another. We have money to hire a road engineer and can actually save

friends; unfortunately, most taxpayers don’t share this relationship. If you pay the toll, rules will be waived. Special exceptions will be made. Being perfectly frank, I do not believe our County Commissioners Court can get the ox out of the ditch. Their skills for the most part are limited to operating equipment. They will not fix our road problem. You as taxpayers and citizens need to get involved. Know the facts. Open the debate. Hire a road engineer? Put the issue on the ballot in November, by signing the petition that is being circulated now. Let’s have transparency. Let’s stop the WASTE?

Falcons football to begin '26 in 1A Division-II Top 25 ranks

By Rich Hilliard

Fannindel will start 2026 ranked in the Top 25 in Class 1A Division-II football. Despite graduation departures, the Falcons garnered the No. 22 spot in the poll included in the 2026 summer edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. Nathaniel Castillo received a mention with the team's ranking, noting him as a "Name to Know" amongst the returning players for Fannindel, an 11-1 area finalist and district champion

Leonard's schedule includes three ranked opponents, with the first two coming consecutively during non-district play and another during District 7-3A-II action: Sept. 11 at Pottsboro, 3A-I's Fannindel's No. 19 team; Sept.18 Nathaniel Castillo. Honey Grove's Ryelan Morris looks upfield during a carry on Aug. 21, 2025, during a football scrimmage at Bonham's Warrior Stadium. Story and photo by Rich Hilliard Former Honey Grove star athlete Ryelan Morris will play for Baylor even before the Bears start their 2026 college football season. Morris will be included in EA Sports College Football 27, as a player option with a 94 speed rating. The game will be released July 9. The 5-10 running back was listed as No. 25 on Baylor's spring 2026 football roster. Baylor will begin its 2026 season on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Atlanta, Ga., at 2:30 p.m. against Auburn.

Leonard this spring almost ended a near decade drought in softball. Only a play-in loss against Pottsboro kept the Lady Tigers from their first postseason in the sport since 2018. Ironically, Leonard's new softball manager helped prematurely end the Lady Tigers' 2017 return to the playoffs -that ended a twice as long absence -- as a previous Pottsboro player. "[Leonard] has a special place in my heart because I actually played Leonard in the (bi-district) playoffs when I was in high school," said Payton Deaton. "It was one of the most memorable games I’ve ever been a part of. "We had a three-hour rain delay and didn’t get back on the field until around midnight," said Deaton. "I had to come back up to bat in the middle of my count after the delay, and I ended up hitting a home run. "It was such a fun, competitive game, and it’s one I’ll

always remember. It’s pretty neat to think I could now have the opportunity to coach at a school where I have such a memorable experience." Deaton fills the head coaching role handled by Luke McCarley this spring. McCarley managed the Lady Tigers to a 5-7 finish in 11-3A play that tied them with Pottsboro for the fourth-and-final district postseason berth. "Softball has always been a huge part of my life, and I knew when my playing career ended that I wanted to give back to the game through coaching," said Deaton. "I’m really excited about the opportunity. I see it as a chance to continue building a program that the school and community can be proud of. "Leonard has a strong tradition of competitive softball and a community that genuinely supports its studentathletes," she said. "As the head coach, one of my priorities is to honor the history of this program by learning from those who helped build it, including former coaches, players, and community members.

ships while developing young women on and off the field. Winning is important, but I want our athletes to leave the program as confident leaders and great teammates." Deaton brings a life that has most always included softball with her. "I played select softball with Texas Glory before continuing my career at the DivisionI level at the University of North Texas," said Deaton. "In high school, I was a four-year varsity letterman, earned First Team All-District multiple years, and was named All-Texomaland (by the Herald Democrat)," she said. "Since my playing career ended, I’ve been able to stay involved through coaching and player development. "Those experiences have helped shape my coaching philosophy and my passion for developing young athletes." Deaton will also help with volleyball at Leonard, which returned to the playoffs last fall with an area-round advance that included the school's first postseason victory in the sport.

"I’m currently an assistant volleyball coach," said Deaton, "and I’m super excited to watch the success that program had last year carry over into this season. "I really enjoy being part of a team environment and supporting multiple programs," she said. "While softball is my passion, I’m always willing to help wherever the athletic department needs me and contribute however I can. "I may be a young coach, but I bring a lot of energy, passion, and a strong work ethic. Sports have made me into the person I am today. They taught me discipline, resilience, accountability, how to be a great teammate, and how to persevere through adversity. Those are lessons that have shaped who I am both personally and professionally, and they’re the same lessons I hope to pass on to my athletes."

Order de Carlos Manuel de Cespedes medal By Margo McCutcheon, Educator, Sam Rayburn House SHS and Malinda Allison, Fannin County Historical Commission Tom Spies was born at the Spies Plantation in Ravenna in 1902, the son of Mary Love and Judge J.E. Spies. At the time of his death in 1960 he had been honored far and wide for his contributions in the field of nutritional deficiency diseases. He graduated from Bonham High School, then earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas in 1923. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard Medical School in 1927. Growing up in rural Fannin County, Tom Spies saw first hand the effects of the horrible disease of pellagra. Known as the “poor man’s disease,” pel-

lagra was widespread among the South. It caused rough red patches on the hands and head sores, rash, swollen tongue and severely inflamed mouth which interfered with eating. The diet of the poor rural population who were afflicted with pellagra consisted of grits, dried beans, cornbread and syrup. It lacked milk, eggs, fresh meat and green vegetables in the spring when these foods were scarce and expensive. Dr. Tom Spies was among the first to prove that pellagra was caused by a deficient diet, and among the first to use nicotinic acid, a constituent of Vitamin B-2, as an inexpensive cure for pellagra. This achievement was compared to the conquest of yellow fever. He also helped conquer sprue, a crippling tropical disease similar to pellagra, and pernicious anemia. He was a consultant to the

Secretary of War in Tropical Medicine during World War II. He won many awards. He was recognized by TIME Magazine as “one of the Men of the year, outstanding in comprehensive science” in 1939. In 1945 he was chosen as “Man of the Year” by the Progressive Farmer Magazine. In 1950, in the Presidential Palace in Havana, Cuba, he was decorated with the Order de Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, the highest award of the Cuban government, by President Carlos Prio Socarras. In 1957 the American Medical Association presented Dr. Spies with the AMA’s Distinguished Service Award “for his outstanding contributions to the science of human nutrition. . . “Through increased knowledge in the science of nutrition and metabolism, Dr. Spies and his associates have not only stopped the ravages of pellagra in this country, but have made

endemic sprue virtually nonexistent in Cuba and Puerto Rico.” Although he did not live as an adult in Fannin County or Bonham, “when he came home to Bonham he spent many late night hours sitting in Peeler’s Drug Store with the pharmacist, the late E. C. Parker Sr., and local doctors as they conversed on their theories about nutrition and medicine.” At the time of his death long obituaries were published in the New York Times, the New York Herald Tribune, the Harvard Medical Alumni Bulletin and El Mundo. He is one of the most distinguished Fannin County natives. He is buried at Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham in plot K, 456. A Texas Historical Marker honors his grave. Courtesy photos

The Bonham Rotary Club held their weekly meeting on Wednesday, July 1, 12 noon, at the First Methodist Church Family Life Center. Melinda Allison was in charge of this week's program and she invited Jim Biggers to speak. Jim is Vice President of the Willow Wild Cemetery Association. He spoke of the improvements that have been made and their need for donations. They get no funding from the county, city nor state. Fortunately the prison is helping out with labor. If you would like to contribute to this worthy cause, please call 903-583-3437, and they can tell you several ways to donate, or you can mail your donation to P. O. Box 159, Bonham, TX 75418. Also, they have 2 email addresses. info@willowwild.org and www.willowwild.org Photo by Tommie Sue Turner

Savoy Bible Quizzing Team Advances The Fannin County Leader Deadline is Thursdays @ Noon to National Competition 6/30/26 7/8/25

4/15/25

This accomplishment is a tremendous honor and privilege, as they will compete against teams from across the United States and Canada. As they prepare for this exciting opportunity, the team has been conducting various fundraisers to help offset the cost of traveling to the national competition. Any donations to support these young Bible quizzers would be greatly appreciated. For more information or to make a donation, please contact Amy Minchey at 903815-7476 or Sherri Eades at 903-486-2748.

Courtesy Photo Savoy, Texas - The Bible Quizzing team from Savoy United Pentecostal Church, pastored by Rev. Robert Eades, has achieved an exciting milestone in its first year of competition. The team, comprised of three young quizzers ages 7 and 8, has earned the opportunity to represent their district at the National Bible Quizzing Tournament in Branson, Missouri, July 18–23, 2026. The first-year team members, Gloria Connors, Kalexy Jones, and Kaylynn Walker, have each committed themselves to memorizing 169 Bible verses. In addition to quoting these verses word-for-word, the quizzers have developed the ability to answer a wide variety of questions relating to their verses of study. Throughout the 2025–2026 Bible Quizzing season, the team has participated in numerous tournaments across their district, as well as a multi-state competition held in Porter, Texas. Their dedication and hard work have produced outstanding results. The team finished undefeated and captured first-place trophies at three of their five competitions. At the District Finals, held June 5–6 at North Cities in Garland, Texas, the team once again went undefeated, securing their place at the National Bible Quizzing Tournament.

God’s Loving Mercy

Hello everyone! The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 1:3-5, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to His abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in Heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” Mercy is defined as the compassionate treatment of those in distress, especially when it is within one’s power to do them harm. We serve a great and merciful God,

and His mercy should never be taken for granted. God’s mercy is not something that is owed to us, but He extends it to us even though we are undeserving of it. He extends His mercy lovingly, and calls us to extend mercy as well. As part of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:7, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.!” When life is uncertain or difficult, this passage reminds us that our hope is not based on changing circumstances, but on our risen Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Because of his infinite mercy and power we, as believers, can live with confidence, knowing

that He is preserving both us and our eternal inheritance. In 1862, Frederick William Faber wrote this classic hymn that comes from the message in this passage. “There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, Like the wideness of the seas. There’s a kindness in God’s justice, Which is more than liberty. There is welcome for the sinner, And more graces for the good. There is mercy with the Savior, There is healing in His blood.” Bro. Josh Stevenson

God Leads His People!

Read Exodus 14:10-18 Verse 10 tells us we need God's help when we are fearful. They were sore afraid. We also need God's help when we are without hope. They cried out. In verse 13 Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day, ye shall see them no more for ever. Verse 14-15 The Lord shall fight or you, and ye shall hold you peace. 15 And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward. God prepared and provided the way for them as we read in verse 16. We have to go in the way God prepares and provides for us as well. We need to pray and ask the Lord to lead us day by day. Reading our Bible will teach us what God has done for others in the time of need. It will build our faith. We need to live with FAITH OVER FEAR! It is easier for us to have faith in God when we know what God is like We find out what God is like by reading the Bible. Christ loves you. He has a better and more meaningful life for us. Come to Him by faith if you are tired of doing life your own way. Admit to Him by faith that you need His forgiveness and ask Him to save you. You are greatly loved by Christ. His death, burial and resurrection are proof of His love for you. Want a new start? Follow Christ and watch the blessings come into your life. Let Us Be Reasonable!

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

The prophet Isaiah quoted God, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD” (Isaiah 1:18). Let us consider these points concerning being “reasonable.” It is reasonable to believe in God! Paul, by inspiration, penned, “Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:19-20). David proclaimed that “the heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork” (Psalm 19:1). Luke records the words that Paul spoke about God, “Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness” (Acts 14:17). Moses gave the first words of the Bible, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1), and then explains the origin of man, “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). It is reasonable to believe in God! It is reasonable to trust in God! First century Christians trusted in God. Paul wrote of God, “Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us” (2 Corinthians 1:10). Christians were willing to suffer because of their trust in the Lord, “For therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe” (1 Timothy 4:10). The wealthy were to be admonished by Timothy, “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17). Children of Judah, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah (we know them as) Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, trusted in the ability of God, “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up” (Daniel 3:17). It is reasonable to trust in God! It is reasonable to serve God! Paul declared, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1). God stated, through the pen of Paul, “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God” (Romans 6:13), and then asks, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” (Romans 6:16). The Hebrew writer said, “Wherefore we, receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear” (Hebrews 12:28). We are reminded that “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). Jesus said, “Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). It is reasonable to serve God! It is reasonable to believe in God, because “without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). It is reasonable to trust in God, because “the LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate” (Psalm 34:22). It is reasonable to serve God, because we are told, “be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Her two favorite Bible verses were Malachi 3:1 and Isaiah 12:3. Though she will be deeply missed, her family rejoices in the promise of Scripture: “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord!” Her legacy of love, faith, and kindness will continue to shine through the generations she leaves behind. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is now at peace with Jesus in Heaven, and that the love she poured into their lives will continue to shape and strengthen them for years to come. In memory of Alana, her wish was to have donations be made to the Trinity Baptist Church in Bonham.

God’s Garden: God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

Traci LeAnne Jones

Traci was born in Dallas, Texas March 7, 1961. Traci’s father Bobby Lee Carlile passed away when she was 3 years old, so she and her older brother, Scott, were essentially raised by a single mother, Vinnie, who owned her own successful insurance business. This was quite a feat in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, simply due to the fact women still experienced a great deal of oppression during that day in time. However, Vinnie’s hard work and successful business, provided Traci with a very positive and impressionable example, which taught her to be a strong and independent woman, regardless of her circumstances. Traci attended elementary and junior high school in Dallas, and then she and her mother moved to Carrollton, Texas where Traci went on to graduate from Newman Smith High School in 1979. While attending Newman Smith, Traci enjoyed her teenage years, including participating in the school’s drill team. Also, while attending high school, Traci worked part time at Braum’s and was able to save up enough money to buy her very first brand new car, which was a real testament to the work ethic Traci had already started developing early on in her life. After high school, Traci went on to attend Texas Tech University, where she earned her degree in landscape architecture in 1984. Upon her graduation from Tech, Traci went to work for the city of Farmers Branch for 24 years, where she made her way up the ranks from landscape architect, to project manager in the engineering department. During her tenure at Farmers Branch, she met and married Clifton Jones on May 1, 1993, a lowly man without prospects. Traci and Clifton raised two daughters and during that time, Traci attended school at night for a number of years, and shortly after the birth of their second child, she completed her master’s degree in public at administration in 2000, from the University of North Texas. In 2008, Traci retired from Farmers Branch and then went to work at UNT as a project manager, where once again, Traci’s hard work allowed her to move up the ranks and transfer to UNT Dallas, in order to become the Assistant Director of Facilities and Space Management. Traci held this position until she retired January 31, 2026. During Traci’s professional life, the work ethic she learned from her mother, helped her to do amazing work. Much of her work was literally breath taking and earned her far too many awards to list in a simple obituary. Traci genuinely loved all of the friends she made during her professional life and maintained close relationships, with many of them for decades. Traci was the sunshine wherever she went and when she smiled, she smiled with her whole body. Traci’s smile and her playful spirit were truly infectious, and she always had a way of drawing people to her, like a magnet. Clifton Jones (Traci’s lowly husband’s self-indulgent recollections): I was a ball player and one night, I came jogging off the field, when I saw this girl, who was absolutely stunning! She was kind of leaning up against a light pole and had on a sleek black dress and all I could think of, was that I just had to meet this girl! But the thing that honestly attracted me to Traci the most (other than that sleek black dress of course), was her smile. As previously mentioned, whenever Traci smiled, she smiled with her entire body, and you knew it came from her heart. Fortunately for me, Traci worked with one of my teammate’s wife, so I had an in. So, after a little begging, I was able to get them to make an introduction and our very first date was a double date with my teammate and his wife. I didn’t know it after that first date, but she invited me to attend one of her work functions the very next day and by the end of that day, I knew the hunt was over… without question, she was undeniably the one for me! She must have felt the same way because from that day forward, we were completely inseparable, and we remained that way for almost 34 years. I have no idea what she ever saw in me because I had absolutely nothing to offer at the time. I was just a ballplayer who worked as an electrician’s apprentice. I barely made enough money to buy a beat-up old car that barely ran and I had just moved back in with my parents, because I couldn’t afford to pay rent on an apartment. So, I figured she was either really desperate, or she saw a lot of unrealized potential in me. And since she was smoking hot, I knew there was no way she was desperate. So, the biggest mystery of my life has always been, how on earth, could such a highly educated, stunningly beautiful woman, ever be attracted to such a lowly man like me? The answer finally came to me a couple of days after she passed away. It was early one morning while it was still quiet, and a thought gently drifted through my mind like a soft summer breeze. The answer was that she had always seen a lot more in me, than I could have possibly ever seen in myself. She made me an infinitely better man than I ever could have been without her. For almost 34 years, she was my rock, my cheerleader, my playmate, and my source of encouragement, and she was always on my side, even when I was wrong. She got me through my firefighter certification, then my paramedic license, and then my Bachelor’s degree. Then many years later, when many of my friends were starting to retire, she cheered me on to get a degree in welding. She cheered me on and supported me through all of these triumphs and many more in between and she was also always my soft place to fall, during my failures, and my lowest of lows. She always saw what I couldn’t see in myself and as a result, she always made me a better person in all of my life’s ups and downs. I do not believe it would be realistic to say she made everyone she knew a better person; however, I will say she made everyone she knew feel better, simply because they knew her. When it comes to Traci, I believe there is essentially one undeniable truth. And I genuinely pray that no one finds this offensive in any way… Since the day I met her, I have always said that if you did not like Traci, it was due to a character flaw on your part, not hers, because Traci was without question the most likeable, most supportive, the most giving and flat out, the most adorable person I have ever known, and I honestly believe, that the only reason some people ever tolerated an irascible man like me, was just so that they could be friends with her! I apologize for not remembering who said it, but they said that to know Traci was to love her, and to love her was to be loved by her. And one thing I would also add that is, if she loved you, then you became a member of her family, for life! ~~~~ My Hunnees, I love you so much darlin’ (she loved it when I called her “darlin’”). You were my rock, my partner, my silly playmate, and my soft place to land. And outside of the Lord, you have always been the singular most important thing in my life, for over half of my life. I have some moments now, when my shattered heart hurts so much, I can barely breathe. But I’ll survive. Life goes by in the blink of an eye, so I know someday soon, I will see you again. April and Faith Abigail (Traci’s daughters): We thought the best way to honor Mom’s memory was to tell our favorite stories that embody the person she was. Mom was a mom to all, a Mary Poppins with a hint of pixie dust, and had a heart the size of Texas. Mom was often referred to as the “second mom.” She had a way of making everyone feel like they belonged. She celebrated your victories, listened with her whole heart, and fiercely stood up for the people she loved. During my (Faith) sorority Mom’s Day, I signed her up to “adopt” a friend whose own mom couldn’t be there, without even asking first. I was not very close with this friend yet, but I knew exactly what Mom’s answer would be. She was always excited to add another seat to the table. When I later found out I had to work and couldn’t attend, Mom went anyway. She showed up just for her, making sure she felt seen, celebrated, and loved. That was who Mom was. She never hesitated to step into whatever role someone needed. Whether for a day or for a lifetime, she had an extraordinary gift for making people feel like family. When we were building a new house and Mom wanted to paint our bedrooms to save money on hiring painters, it could’ve been an arduous, weekend long chore. Instead, she bought us coveralls and white hats, wrote “Ralph” (Gilligan’s Island) on hers, and made it a weekend sleepover adventure. We ate pizza, slept on air mattresses, and helped paint our rooms (as much as a 6 and 12-year-old can help anyway). Mom was the best at putting a “spoonful of sugar” into even the most menial and mundane tasks. I (April) will never forget the time that Mom realized a lady in her Sunday School class didn’t have her own Bible because she couldn’t afford it. Mom went and got a sturdy leather-bound Bible and had the woman’s name embossed into it. I watched her sit and painstakingly tab the whole Bible for what felt like a gagillion hours at 8 years old. It always stuck out to me how she treated the whole project so lovingly, as if doing it for herself or a close loved one. The next morning, we got to church VERY early so that Mom could put the Bible at the woman’s usual spot and run away before anyone saw what she’d done. I brought this story up to her in adulthood, and she barely even remembered doing it. That’s just how often she would be the hands and feet of Jesus around her. These are just a few examples of how Mom raised us by showing us how to exist in this world rather than telling us. She rewrote our story by being our Momma. She gave us a love of musicals, whimsy, “the little things”, the Lord, Sonic ice, and laughing until we pee. She reminded us that kindness is often quiet, that generosity doesn’t need recognition, and that the greatest legacy a person can leave is the way they make others feel. A graveside service was held Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Gunsight Cemetery in Gunsight, Texas. Jim “Papa” Hall

Jim “Papa” Hall, 65, of Telephone, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on June 27, 2026. Born on June 12, 1961, to J.D. and Phyllis Hall, Jim lived a life defined by hard work, laughter, and love for the outdoors. Jim dedicated many years of service to Bonham Independent School District, where he worked in maintenance and became known for his dependability and ability to fix just about anything. He was a true outdoorsman who found peace in God’s creation, whether he was bow hunting, fishing, farming, or simply sitting outside taking it all in. He never met an animal he didn’t want to bring home. Chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, pigs—if it needed feeding, he was probably interested in raising it, at least for a while. Jim was happiest with a project in his hands and his trusted DeWalt tools nearby. There was always something to build, fix, tinker with, or improve. If he wasn’t working on a project, he was probably thinking about the next one. He had a quick wit, a mischievous sense of humor, and a personality that could fill a room. He was funny, snarky, and could be a bit of a pain now and then— but those who loved him wouldn’t have had him any other way. He kept life interesting, loved to joke around, and left everyone with stories they’ll be telling for years to come. He never took life too seriously and had a special talent for making people laugh, even when they didn’t want to. More than anything, Jim loved his family. He treasured every moment spent with them and created memories full of laughter, love, and adventure that will be cherished for generations. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Dena Hall of Telephone; his daughters, Crystal Holman and Eric of Sherman, Mindi Hall of Bonham, Amanda Lucas and husband Jeremy of Bonham, and Ashley Hall and Clayton of Bonham; his sons, Josh Hall of Bonham, T.J. USDA Announces Base Acre Increase Opportunity for Agriculture Risk and Price Loss Coverage Safety Net Programs

Landowners to Review Base Allocation Summary by Aug. 31 SCOTT TOWNSHIP, Pa., May 26, 2026 — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) today announced eligible landowners have from June 1 until Aug. 31, 2026 to review and consider base acre increases on farms enrolled in the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs, as authorized by provisions included in the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Signed into law by President Donald J. Trump on July 4, 2025, the Act provides landowners with the opportunity to update and increase base acres in preparation for enrollment in ARC and PLC beginning with the 2026 and future crop years. Nationwide, up to 30 million new base acres can be added by eligible farms. ARC and PLC are cornerstone commodity safety net programs that provide financial protection to farmers when market prices or revenues decline. These programs help producers manage risk and maintain the economic viability of their operations amid challenging market and weather conditions. “This is the first chance for adding base acres since 2002. President Trump and Secretary Rollins continue to put Farmers First by ensuring USDA programs help producers protect their operations for generations to come,” said FSA Administrator Bill Beam. “These base acre improvements will help strengthen the farm safety net for producers across the country and help them better manage risk by providing greater flexibility for operations that have expanded or diversified since the last time we revisited base allocations.” FSA began notifying eligible landowners, by direct mail, that Base Allocation Summaries outlining potential base acre updates will be available for review beginning June 1, 2026. These Base Allocation Summaries can be accessed online at fsa.usda.gov/arc-plc using a Login.gov account. Landowners who do not currently have a Login.gov account are encouraged to contact their local FSA county office to obtain their Base Allocation Summary beginning June 1, 2026. The Base Allocation Summary should be reviewed and any necessary actions completed by Monday, Aug. 31, 2026. Farm operators often maintain detailed historical planting records. Early communication between landowners and farm operators will ensure the Base Allocation Summary is accurate and all necessary actions are completed by the deadline. To be eligible for new base acres, a current covered commodity must have been planted or prevented from being planted on the farm during the 2019 through 2023 crop years. The farm’s average planted and prevented planted acres during that period must exceed the total existing base acres for all covered commodities in effect on Sept. 30, 2024, excluding unassigned base acres. FSA farm total base acres cannot exceed the farm’s total cropland acres. If eligible requests exceed the nationwide cap of 30 million acres, USDA will apply an across-the-board, prorated reduction to all approved new base acres. For additional information, producers should contact their local FSA county office or visit U.S. Department of Agriculture online at fsa.usda. gov/state-offices.

62 years ago...1964 Crossword Solution

By Tim Meek OK, who done it? One of the Garrison Street mysteries that resulted in a plethora of threats and investigations up and down the block was-who poured motor oil on Nancy Johnson’s concrete front porch? And wow, what a mess

Puzzle On Page 4

it made. Nancy was one of the teenage girls, pretty and a cheerleader I think with long blond hair. Now this was teen drama! I was still just a kid, about 9 years old I think. So...I was somewhat removed from the drama and angst up and down Garrison Street. I just “heard” about it. How could you not? There were parents roaming

Puzzle On Page 4

up and down the street doing investigations. Lots of loud talking. Of course, my older brother, Cleatus, who WAS a teenager was a prime suspect, as were ALL the teen boys on the block. I just remember Mr. Johnson, Nancy’s Dad was boiling hot. He already had very little hair on top of his head and it was red, along with his face. I ran fast, away from all the hub-bub so as not to be incriminated. Mr. Johnson actually scared me into hiding. Even though I was not involved in the incident, as a kid, when you see angry parents, you just run....right? Well, it was NOT my brother Cleatus or any other boy that I remember. I think it was a rival girl. Jealously ran amuck among the teen girls on Garrison Street. We’re talking 1964 here and social status was a big thing, apparently. Who took who’s boyfriend? I just remember riding my bicycle past the Johnson’s house and watching Mr. Johnson doing lot’s of scrubbing on that concrete

porch and to this day, I bet the stain is still there. Here are a few social upheavals from 1964. At the University of California, Berkeley, students protested restrictions on political activity on campus. Sit-ins and rallies grew into one of the first major campus protest movements of the 1960s. The Beatles’ arrival in America, changing fashion, rock and roll, student activism, and challenges to old social rules showed a widening generation gap. The country passed landmark civil rights legislation, but racial violence, voting-rights struggles, urban unrest, student protests, and Vietnam War tensions showed that America was entering one of the most turbulent periods in modern history. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act on July 2, 1964. It outlawed segregation in many public places and banned employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
