First Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Protection Plan Meeting By Rose Schwartz Wednesday, July 21, 2021, North Texas Municipal Water District Watershed Manager, David Cowan, opened the first meeting of the Bois

d’Arc Lake Watershed Protection Plan by welcoming all in attendance. Attendees were given a well-written 26page outline to follow during the meeting along with other informative written

material to assist in educating one about the goals of the Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Partnership Meetings. The definition of a watershed is: “that land area surrounding a water body that drains to a

common waterway such as a

07/02/19 stream, river, or lake. All the

land surfaces that contribute runoff to a water body are considered part of the watershed.” The Bois d’Arc Lake watershed is approximately

326 square miles and is composed of smaller watersheds that include Bois d’Arc Creek, Lake Bonham, and Honey Grove Creek. Mr. Cowan began his presentation laying out that The Purpose of the Bois d’Arc Lake WPP is to: *Identify

current and potential sources of water pollution in the Bois d’Arc Lake watershed; *Encourage a voluntary and community-driven partnership focused on protecting and enhancing water quality in the watershed; *Identify and recommend specific management measures that will protect and improve water used for drinking, recreation and aquatic habitat for wildlife; *Facilitate the pursuit of federal nonpoint source program grant funds and other financial and technical assistance programs to support the implementation of the plan. The agenda for this first meeting was to define the planning process for the WPP, identify the Stakeholder Group (Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Partnership), establish the rules of the partnership, go over the “watershed characterization”, and discuss the next steps which would include determining where and when future meetings would take place.
