Tuesday, July 13, 2021, Senior Fannin County Commissioner Jerry Magness called to order at 9:00 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court to a full house.

A quorum was established as all four of the County Commissioners were present with County Judge Randy Moore away at a conference. The invocation was led by Pastor Henry Shelton of Trinity Baptist Church of Bonham. Pledges were led

by Commissioner Magness.

4. Public Forum: Before Commissioner Magness invited speakers for Public Forum, he advised all that anytime anyone wants to know what was said in Commissioners Court, a recorded

All the speakers, with the exception of the last, repeated similar resentments for a permit they believed was not well thought out, burdensome, and should be rescinded. One speaker who quoted scripture verse Galatians 5:1 said he had done as suggested at the last Commissioners Court meeting and had listened to the recording from June 22, 2021.

He said what he heard on the recording only angered him more while another speaker commended the work of the Commissioners and handed out a leaflet of information regarding the Texas Water Code and subdivisions. He urged better information be

The last speaker spoke on the topic of water and how both Bois d’Arc Lake and Lake Ralph Hall were not intended to provide water for Fannin County. He continued that water from both lakes would have to be bought and believes that the Fannin County Water Supply Corporation should be reinstated to make recommendations to the Commissioners Court in the future.

This involves a great deal of behind-the-scenes coordination with TxDOT, the railroad – G&WRR, traffic management firms and the actual bridge painting contractors!

Bonham City Council Meeting – Bethlehem Baptist Church Day, Grants, Plans & Sidewalks

Prior to the call to order of the Bonham City Council’s meeting, Pastor Henry Shelton of Trinity Baptist Church led an invocation for all present. Mayor H Compton then thanked everyone for coming to the meeting and called the meeting to order July 12, 2021, at 5:30 p.m.

1. Consider and take action to approve minutes of the June 14th regular meeting and the June 28th special meeting: Motion was made, seconded and passed to approve minutes.

2. Consider and take action to accept financial report for month ending June 30, 2021: Director of Finance Dave Struchtemeyer gave the financial report, during which time he noted the General Fund had a favorable status from the Revenue for Sales Tax Receipts; Expenses were on line with the budget and an unfavorable variance that existed in the Water Sewer Fund Revenue would not be recovered this fiscal year due to a budget shortfall (water bills were put on averages for several months due to the transition to new water meters and water demand had been far less than expected.)

Motion was made, seconded and passed to accept report.

3. Citizens Opportunity to Speak: (The City Council invites persons with comments or observations to briefly address the Council for the limited purpose of determining whether the matter should be referred to staff for study and response and/or be placed on a future meeting agenda. State Law prohibits the City Council from considering deliberations on any item not listed on the posted City Council Agenda): A citizen spoke regarding the Solid Rock Pentecostal Church of God and introduced Pastor Terry Horn to speak about Lydia’s Closet which is a clothing ministry for those in need of clothing. Pastor Horn gave their location as 1850 S. TX Hwy 121 which is a mile south of the theatre. She spoke of past successes in getting clothing to those in need and the current back to school clothing project going on. She gave her phone number of 903-640-3025 for those who may have a need, know of any who could use their assistance or for any who are able to offer their assistance to gather clothes for children and others. Both Terry and her husband Larry are pastors at the church.

4. Presentation of proclamation for Bethlehem Baptist Church: Councilman Timothy La Vergne II asked members of the church to come forward for a picture as Mayor Compton read a Proclamation stating July 25, 2021 as Bethlehem Baptist Church Day in Bonham, TX. This action was in testimony of the high regard the City holds for the church on the 150th year Anniversary of the oldest church in Fannin County. Mayor Compton read a brief history of the church which included it was founded in the early

1870s, has had more than 30 pastors in its historical existence and was presented the 100th Historical Marker that was dedicated Sunday May 21, 1972.

5. Consider and take action to authorize the City of Bonham to issue requests for proposals (RFP) for administrative services and requests for qualifications (RFQ) for professional services for the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021: City Manager Sean Pate explained how the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 is the newest act that does not require matching funds but has a lot of red tape involved that Mr. Pate believes would be best handled by enlisting the aid of someone from Gary Traylor & Associates or Grant Works to help with the compliance reporting and procurement of funds. He noted four categories could be utilized with some carrying heavy stipulations. He also noted two of the most pressing needs are trash coming into sewer system and updates for wastewater treatment and pumping systems. The amount of money that can be awarded to the city is up to 2.3 million dollars however a realistic goal would be closer to at least over a million dollars. His request from the council today was permission to solicit (RFQ) assistance from select firms for obtaining these monies for the city. Motion was made, seconded and passed to authorize.

6. Consider and take action on a resolution to officially name the Roy V. Floyd Community Center: Sean Pate stated this would be the final necessary documentation to identify on public record that the building formerly known as The Bonham Armory would be renamed to the Roy V. Floyd Community Center. Motion was made, seconded and passed.

7. Consider and take action on a Specific Use Permit for property ID 128260 (Hwy 121 & Hwy 82) to change the zoning from Local Business (LB to Planned Development (PD): City of Bonham Director of Community Development Mark Kinnaird spoke about a request from the property owners of the 29 acres on the Southwest corner of Hwy 121 and 82 to change the zoning of their acreage to planned development. He provided a schematic of proposed buildings and said that there are two committed plans in the schematic drawing for a Fix and Feed and a McCraw Oil convenience store. Mr. Kinnaird said this was approved by the Bonham P & Z committee unanimously.

Manager Sean Pate stated he believes it will be a nice development as it appears they understand the importance of storm water retention and the topography issue as it relates to the sewer. His opinion is that it looks like a really nice long-term project.

Motion was made by Kevin Hayes, seconded by Michael Evans and passed to approve

zoning change.

8. Consider and take action to appoint or reappoint individuals to the Planning and Zoning Commission: Mr. Kinnaird explained four members terms expired June 30, 2021, and as they wish to remain on the Commission and there is no interest from any other citizens to be on this board; he, the staff, and the other members recommend they be reseated for another 2 year term. Those four members are: Edith Fuller, Michael Todd, Price Bradshaw and David Kinkade. Motion was made, seconded and passed to reappoint those members.

9. Hold discussion on sidewalk ordinances in the City of Bonham: Mark Kinnaird said he had promised Rusty Deets sometime ago that this would be brought before council and began by discussing the requirements for sidewalks in new residential developments and the definitions of what is a development. He discussed the state of Bonham’s residences in areas where there are no sidewalks or sidewalks are extremely deteriorated. He spoke of curb and gutter additions to some areas and touched on the drainage issues and curb appeal.

Mr. Deets spoke after Mr. Kinnaird and described an incident where his wife was almost hit by a vehicle during a walk due to there not being a sidewalk to walk on. He thinks the City of Bonham should do everything in its power to install sidewalks. He spoke of Tx DOT installing some sidewalks in the City and was curious as to why the City of Bonham signed off on the incomplete job they did by not having them install sidewalks all the way down Hwy 121. He spoke on length of the problems and dangers that exist especially for children and the handicapped, and how he believes the City needs to have rules that are followed to make it better for the citizens. After he spoke, Sean Pate responded to one of his criticisms that the city signed off on an incomplete sidewalk job done by the highway dept., by noting that the City did not sign off on that as the state did not require them to do so.

He explained that TX DOT elected to spend about three million dollars in Bonham and though Mr. Pate sent them a list of streets needing sidewalks, it was the choice of field office staff where to put in sidewalks and the City of Bonham had no control over that decision. Mr. Pate further stated that he still has the list he sent them as do TX DOT and as more money becomes available for sidewalk projects, they would probably go back to that list.

More discussion about existing city ordinances needing to be enforced regarding sidewalks ensued and Mr. Pate stated that the council is 100% behind the enforcement of those ordinances.

Matthew 16:18 Hebrews 10:25 As many of you know already, a large part of my life’s work covers the 40 years that I spent in the field of pastoring. It began as the pastor of the Victory Baptist Church, Gilmer, Texas in 1948.

It ended in 1988 here in Bonham where I served as pastor of the First Baptist Church for 16 years.

While I continued to serve in the church related capacities, someone else was now pastor. For the first time in 40+ years,

My wife lovingly cautioned me many times to remember that I was not the pastor anymore. And that I could now put to practice what I had been preaching. It was now my opportunity and obligation to give personal support from the pew. One of my duties included being one of the pastor’s helpers.

In writing this article, I have two thoughts in mind. First, let me encourage you to be active in the church of your choice, and second, consider being one of your pastor’s caring helpers.

In each of the churches that I served as pastor, I was blessed by “real people” with “real names.” I remember them gratefully today. The help that I received are reminders of

Namely 1. We can keep our pastor in the center of our prayer life daily.

2. We can let our presence speak our support.

3. We can remember the words of encouragement are always timely and appropriate.

10. Discussion, consideration, and action to rescind the Fannin County Development Permit: Commissioner Magness stated he was encouraged that many people know about the flood plain. He spoke about the existing permits that address the floodplain issue, mentioned that there are requirements that exist within the 5,000-foot buffer zone of the lake, and encouraged everyone especially realtors to make people aware of land that is located within a flood plain. Commissioner Lane of precinct one spoke after Commissioner Magness and first thanked everyone for coming and then empathized with many who are not happy about all the growth occurring in Fannin County. However, she said, growth is coming our way and said in the future we will need to take better steps by way of public discussions, input, and involvement for plans. After speaking, she made the motion to rescind the Fannin County Development Permit. And, before the motion was put to a vote, once again citizens from Ravenna, Ladonia, Leonard, Trenton, etc., came forward to voice their opinions and why they believed the permit should be rescinded. Democracy In Action, We Best Start Paying Attention Watchdog: one that guards against loss, waste, or undesirable practices

As one of the new owners of The Fannin County Leader, I have made an effort to immerse myself in the local goings on of the County Government by attending the Commissioners Court Meeting occasionally on Tuesdays at 9:00. The meetings are being held in the City of Bonham City Hall as the Courthouse construction is ongoing.

The normal attendance of the public in a regular Commissioners meeting is probably 10-12 citizens, sometimes I have been and there were only 3.

On Tuesday, July 6th, there were folks standing in the meeting room, all the chairs were filled and the foyer outside the room was full.

Finding an empty chair was pretty much impossible.

What happened? There were hot button items on the agenda that hit folks close to home, literally their home and property. A Development Permit was approved by the Commissioners in the June 22nd meeting.

The intent of this editorial is not to discuss the individual items on the agenda, the intent is to communicate with the readers my personal appreciation and pride I felt in seeing the citizens of this county actually show up in numbers and voice their opinions and concerns in public forum.

Folks, this is what community service is all about! Not everyone can or wants to hold an official office for the city or county. What you CAN do is attend the meetings, stay informed and communicate with your City and County officials.

Transparency and doing the “people’s will” can only be achieved when we, as citizens get involved and hold our elected officials accountable.

I’m not talking about raising

heck and personally attacking them, I’m talking about being respectful and challenging the problem, not the person.

I can say that was accomplished on Tuesday, July 6th.

I was extremely impressed by the speakers, they were passionate, informed and direct. Everyone was well behaved and supportive of each other. Their voices made a difference!

Our elected officials are just that, we elected them and put them in office to represent us.

We expect them to be honest in their dealings and do what’s BEST for the citizens. And guess what? They want to hear from us, they need our input, support and ideas. And we need to give them the respect and support that comes with the office. They are not perfect either, they lay themselves wide open for criticism and sometimes just plain cussin’.

Don’t believe me? Ask any Commissioner.

Yes, there was passion, and anger displayed at this meeting. I sensed there was something else. Everyone in that meeting was there because they cared about our county.

Something was being done that they believed went against our freedoms and they cared enough to show up and let their voices be heard. A lot of people took off work to attend the meeting or went in late to be there.

I left that 4 and 1/2 hour meeting with the feeling that we still have a chance and hope.

A chance and opportunity to assist our elected officials in making the BEST decisions for our GROWING county.

And the county is going to grow, and there will be some painful decisions to make along the way.

UPDATE The Commissioner’s meeting on July 13 was held

and yes, the room was full again. Folks showed up to see what the response from the Commissioners would be.

They voted unanimously to rescind the previous decision on the Development Permit.

Lot’s of lessons learned on this agenda item. Public hearings should be held before any new future permits are started and the citizens need to pay closer attention to what’s going on with local government.

Get involved! When at all possible attend your local city council and commissioners meetings. Let them see your smiling face. Get informed on the issues and stay up to date with what’s going on. We cannot allow ourselves to fall asleep and continue to let the wheels turn and assume we know who is driving.

OK, a special challenge to the retired folks who attend the local coffee clubs every morning: On each Tuesday morning at 9:00 there is a Commissioners Court meeting. Bring your group to the meeting, it’s in the Bonham City Hall, find a seat and just watch and listen. The meeting agendas are posted on Fridays on the Fannin County Leader website: www. fannincountyleader.info and on the County website: http:// www.co.fannin.tx.us/. Look at the agendas and make sure a very important discussion or vote does not go unnoticed.

You might find out what’s really going on...and there should NEVER be an almost empty room when votes and discussions are taking place that affect us all.

We had a wonderful service 3/7/17 in God’s House on Sunday morning! Great spirit and fellowship! Our numbers were up, we had a full choir, and we had some visitors come to worship with us! I know that I say this a lot, but it’s true. I am amazed at the amount of talent that we have in our church

Ruach HaKodesh in Hebrew is translated into English “Holy Spirt” or “Holy Breath” of God. Spirit and Breath are translations of the exact same word. Holy Spirit is a divine Person, possessing all the attributes of Deity, and is infinite, eternal, unchangeable, indivisible, omnipresent (universal presence), omnipotent (all-powerful, most high, invincible, and unconquerable), and omniscient (all-wise, all seeing, allknowing), personal, and perfect in wisdom, power, holiness, righteousness, justice, goodness, truth, mercy, and Love. He is God, as is God the Father and God the Son. And the Threein-One make up The One True God. It is Holy Spirit that hovered over the face of the deep at the Creation waiting for The Father to give the command – LIGHT, BE! Holy Spirit is the Power that carried out the Father’s command. (Genesis 1:1). Holy Spirit brought forth The Son of God into human form when he overshadowed Mary, that the child, born into the world to save the world would be called The Son of God. (Luke 1:35). Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead. (Romans 8:11). Jesus said, “He (Holy Spirit) convicts the world of sin (death), righteousness (Life), and judgment.” (John 16:8).

There is not one true Christian that has not been born-again by the Holy Spirit of God. Jesus said, “You must be born again. Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of The Spirit. Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You must be born again.’ John 3:6-7.

Holy Spirit immerses all believers into the Body of Christ.

“For by One Spirit are we all baptized (immersed) into ONE BODY, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, …and have all been made to drink into One Spirit.” (I Corinthians 12:13). “For we are all are ONE BODY, the Body of Christ.” (I Corinthians 12:12). Holy Spirit inspired the writing of scripture, and it is HE that brings us to an understanding of The Truth. Jesus said, “When HE, The Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into ALL TRUTH.” (John 16:13). Holy Spirit brings all those who believe to understand the Word of God and appropriate His teaching into everyday life. Holy Spirit is the voice to guide every believer. “And whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear His command behind you, ‘THIS IS THE WAY. WALK IN IT.” (Isaiah 30:21). It is the privilege and necessity of every believer in Jesus to be filled with and led by HOLY SPIRIT! Yet, an astounding 58% of those in the United States who claim they are Christians do not believe the Holy Spirit is any more than a symbol of God and certainly not a co-equal to God the Father and God the Son. There is no doubt why the church who claims the name of Jesus Christ has so little power on earth and in our communities to change the hearts and lives of humanity lost to the knowledge of God. Jesus said that Holy Spirit is the presence of God on this earth that would fill all those called by His name. Jesus said that Holy Spirit is The Comforter. Holy Spirit is a Counselor, Helper and Advocate for those in need. That includes all of us. We could not know Jesus as Savior and Messiah if Holy Spirit, whom the Father sent in Jesus’ name did not teach us. Jesus said, “It is HE that shall teach you all things and bring to your remembrance (and understanding) all that I said to you. (John 14:26). The church is impotent without Holy Spirit. Without Him, there is no power to bring forth a harvest of sons and daughters into the Kingdom of God, that His Kingdom might fill the earth. The Holy Spirit knows the thoughts of God because He is the Spirit of God. “For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except The Spirit of God. What we [as true born-again Christians] have received is not the spirit of the world, but Holy Spirit, who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.” (I Corinthians 2:11-12).

Jesus addressed anyone who would speak against Holy Spirit.

Jesus said, “Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” Matthew 12:32.

If we wonder why the Church of Jesus Christ occupying corners and blocks throughout this country are only shells of Houses of Worship that leaves people traveling from one building to another looking for the One True God and the Power of God that brings His Peace and Salvation in Jesus Christ, we need only to look to scripture to realize that the True Leader of the Church – Holy Spirit – has been left outside by leaders and worshippers alike. A majority does not even know who HE IS. As Jesus said in His letters to each of the seven churches in Revelation, “LISTEN TO WHAT THE SPIRIT IS SAYING TO THE CHURCHES.” “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the Tree of Life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.” Revelation 2:7.

There can be no redemption, no victory, no salvation, no knowledge of The Savior, Jesus Christ, without Holy Spirit.

There can be no light within our churches to illuminate our communities with the Knowledge of God without His Presence. TOMMIE “JO” MELTON CRAIN

Tommie “Jo” Melton Crain, 94 years old passed away Monday, July 12, 2021, with her family by her side.

Jo Crain was born in Dial Community South of Honey Grove, Texas on November 23, 1926, to William Fredrick Melton and Bessie Ola Weaver Melton. She was the youngest of 8 children. Jo graduated from Windom High School, and she worked as a telephone operator at Southwestern Bell for 38 1/2 years.

In her retirement years she was very active in her church and with family and friends. Jo loved playing her favorite hymns on the piano, especially when she had an audience. She was so talented; she was able to play by ear.

Going fishing and planting a garden was a priority with her family, we lost count of the number of onion bunches we planted through the years. We sure did eat well when she cooked! Cooking was something she really enjoyed especially with Erik. In the later years she would just read cookbooks, the annual Better Homes and Garden was one of her favorites.

Honey Grove TX- Funeral services for Ronald “Ronnie “Lee Campbell formerly of Honey Grove, TX were held at CooperSorrells Funeral Home Chapel, Honey Grove on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at 2:00 pm. Ronnie’s family served as his pallbearers.

Ronnie was born December 20, 1955, to Alvis and Lucille (Kirk) Campbell in Dallas Texas. Ronnie grew up in the Dial Community where he loved to farm and grow beautiful gardens.

Ronnie loved time spent with his family. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren and especially his great grand children on rides on the golf cart. Ronnie also enjoyed visiting his local Dairy Queen.

Ronnie is survived by his daughter Kristy Campbell and husband John Blasingame.

His grandchildren Katelyn, Alesha and Emalie and his great grandchildren Tristan and Jurnee.

Brothers Leon Campbell and wife Jean, Billy Campbell, and Richard Campbell; as well as many nieces and nephews Ronnie is celebrating in heaven with his beloved daughter Karen Campbell Ayers, his parents Alvis and Lucille Campbell, his brother David Campbell and his sister – in -law Carol Ann Campbell.

Jo loved to go on special trips to see her family and friends, even to the nursing homes just to put a smile on their faces, which only she could do.

Word seek books and her Bible could always be found next to her recliner. At 6:30 in the evenings when Wheel of Fortune was broadcasting Jo would be watching and on occasion Rafe would challenge her on who could guess the puzzle first!

Jo Crain is survived by her loving son Phillip Bradley Crain and wife Mary Beth Crain, grandsons Erik Bradley Crain and Rafe Silas Crain.

Graveside service were held at 11:00AM Friday, July 16, 2021, at Oakwood Cemetery, Honey Grove, Texas.

Honey Grove Texas, Graveside services for Jack David Sadler 92 of Bonham TX were held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday July 11th 2021 at Dodd City Cemetery . Mr. Nolen Butler officiated.

Jack was born August 18th, 1928 in Windom Texas to Drewey and Virgie (Brewer) Sadler. Jack passed away on Friday July 9, 2021 at the Terrace of Denison in Denison Texas. Jack served proudly in the United States Marine Corp in the Korean War where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he sustained in combat on September 12, 1951.

Jack was married to the love of his life Janice (Haralson) Sadler on April 3, 1971 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada . Jack and Janice celebrated 50 years of marriage this past April.

Jack is now rejoicing with his beloved parents Drewey and Virgie Sadler his brothers Wayne and Lloyd Sadler and his sisters Ruth Richardson and Wanda Gartee .

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Janice Sadler of the home ,His brothers H.B. Sadler of Windom Tx, Bobby Sadler of Wylie Tx, and S.E. Sadler of Windom Tx. As well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

BonhamLillie Kathryn Sanderson Peeler, age 85, was born on April 29, 1936 in Whitewright, TX to Andy and Mildred (Ross) Sanderson. Lillie left this world on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas.

Lillie graduated from Bonham, High School in 1954. She worked at the Fannin County clerks office until 1957. She married Raleigh Deleen Peeler on November 30, 1957 in Bonham, TX; in which time she worked beside Deleen in their Bookbinding Business.

He preceded her in death on November 16, 2012.

Lillie had two sons, Jeff Peeler and Randy Peeler. She loved to paint and help decorate and did so for many people. She was always there to help if needed.

Lillie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bonham, TX. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents Andy and Mildred Sanderson.

She is survived by sons, Jeff Peeler, and Randy and wife Brandy Peeler; brothers, Bill and wife Barbara Sanderson, Bob and wife Ginger Sanderson, and Allen and wife Beth Sanderson; 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be missed dearly.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at the First Baptist Church. Bro. Ken Ussery, Jeff Peeler, Chance Peeler, and Allen Sanderson officiated. Interment followed at Arledge Ridge Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Jeff Peeler, Randy Peeler, Chance Peeler, John Manning, Bryan Miller, and Allen Sanderson. WILLIAM B. SMILEY

William B. Smiley left this world to be with his Savior on Saturday, July 10, 2021. His wife, Megan Smiley, his family and his friends know him as a kind, silly, peaceful man with a servant’s heart.

He worked as a truck driver – the bigger the truck, the better. In his free time, he loved his wife and cared for his friends. He enjoyed talking on the CB radio, watching the most random YouTube videos, fishing and basically being a

Funeral service for Nola June Kerr, 85, of Bonham, were held at 3:00 PM Sunday, July 18, 2021 at Boyd Baptist Church under the direction of Wise Funeral Home.

Rev. Kevin Towery and Rev. Mike Allred officiated. Burial followed in Willow Wild Cemetery. June passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on Wednesday morning, July 14, 2021 surrounded by her loving family.

June was born December 15, 1935 in Butler, Oklahoma, the daughter of Gardner Altus Smith and Clara Neola Lee Smith.

She was a graduate of Paris High School. June married the love of her life, Jimmy Kerr, on February 11, 1955 in Paris, Texas.

Employed in the note department at Fannin Bank for many years. she taught and trained many employees who affectionately named her June Bug. Although June was an avid Bridge player and enjoyed needlepoint and playing games, her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

She was a longtime member of Boyd Baptist Church. June was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, D. W. Smith and Elvin Orn Smith and a sister, Ella Chlorine Smith Easton.

June leaves to cherish her memories, her husband of 66 years, Jimmy Kerr of Bonham, TX; three daughters, Connie Kerr Skidmore (Danny) of Ravenna, TX, Dana Kerr of Bonham, TX and Jimette Kerr (Kriss Owens) of Coppell, TX; grandchildren, Stoney Skidmore, Bodey Skidmore (Ashley), Lori Lynn Little (Tony), and Caleb Trent Castleberry; great grandchildren, Ambrie Skidmore, Bradey Skidmore, Texie Skidmore, Sydney June Little and Allison Mary Little; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

17. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve Auditors’ monthly reports for June 2021: Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple gave some detail on the reports, and a Motion was made by Commissioner Self, seconded by Commissioner Lackey, and passed to approve.

19. Comments by County Commissioners: Commissioner Lane again thanked everyone for attending, expressed the hope that more steps would be taken to inform citizens of decisions being made especially those involving financial impact, and believes evening meetings would help to allow those with daytime jobs to attend meetings. She asked for patience on the road work being done as there have been equipment issues and wished all a good week. Commissioner Self thanked Commissioner Lane for putting the permit back on the agenda and said he too was encouraged by the attendance, comments, and respects of everyone, and wished all a good week.

Commissioner Magness said he was also glad for the large number of citizens who came to today’s and last week’s meeting but was less encouraged by seeing those who left immediately after

the issue they were there for was addressed. He encouraged more involvement in what’s going on in the county and said that those unable to attend can listen to the meetings on zoom. He said he believes the Court is very transparent in their dealings, and he is glad to see the democratic process in action. He said he enjoys working for the county and announced that at the end of this third term his plan is to retire and wants to be known as someone who served the county well. He said though everyone on the court does not think alike (if everyone thought just alike, it would be a dull world) they do agree to get along. He did agree that they should have done this (the permit) differently and from now on they will. He encouraged everyone to stay involved, come to the meetings, bring a neighbor, and said Judge Moore would be back next week.

Commissioner Lackey said he too appreciated everyone’s attendance and Commissioner Lane for putting the development permit back on the agenda.

He noted that the county government works with everyone being able to speak.

He said in Fannin County citizens can be heard unlike what happens in Austin and if something does not work, you change it. He ended by saying he appreciated everyone coming and being able to work for the county and encouraged everyone to stay safe.

tion Agriculture Specialists and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Inspectors when they came across packages containing what they claimed to be steel nippers. The package didn’t have the expected weight and was opened for inspection. Inside the box was numerous bags of vegetable seeds and dried shrimp.

A package contained Ipomoea Aquatica seeds (water spinach), which is a harmful aquatic species in Texas. A second package claimed to be shirts.

Wrapped inside the clothing was a bag that also contained Ipomoea Aquatica seeds. It is illegal to import or possess seeds in Texas. The cases were referred to a Tarrant County game warden and the packages were seized as evidence. The individuals who imported the products were issued citations.

The cases are pending.

Early Bird Gets the Ticket Galveston County Game War-

dens were patrolling Galveston Bay and East Bay and saw several shrimp boats maneuvering in a manner consistent with shrimping. One vessel had nets and doors in the water. When asked to retrieve the net, it revealed cod. Several vessels were cited for shrimping before legal hours. Cases are pending.

Four-Wheeler of Misfortune While patrolling Twin Buttes Public Lands in Tom Green County, a local game warden made contact with several individuals riding all-terrain vehicles. Some of the individuals were unable to produce a limited public use permit, as required to access the public lands. The warden decided to check if some of the ATVs were stolen and discovered one individual was in possession of a stolen four-wheeler from a nearby city. The case was turned over to the originating jurisdiction for investigation.

Kids Say the Darndest Things A Polk County game warden received a call from county dispatch regarding a father and his 9-year-old son who had gotten stuck in their buggy deep in a deer lease. They attempted to walk back to their camp and got lost in the process. County dispatch was able to ping their location within a three-mile radius. Once in the area, the warden was able to follow the tracks to the father and son. Dad commented to the son, “Yeah, might be bad luck being the second time we’ve been stuck together,” as the son responds, “but each time, dad, you were driving.” The warden responded, “you’re a smart kid,” and presented him with a Texas Game Warden badge.

Denison, Texas - Grayson College Center for Workplace Learning with Adult Education and Literacy are set to host a Welcome Back Wednesday enrollment event on July 28 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. On this day, those interested in completing high school, improving English language skills, changing careers or advancing in their current career can walk into the Center for Workplace Learning building on Grayson College’s main campus in Denison to enroll. Registration can be completed in most languages with Spanish-speaking staff immediately available to assist registrants. Registering students should bring a government issued ID. “We know that COVID-19’s massive disruption to employment, childcare and school routines have disproportionately impacted those with lower levels of educational attainment,” Grayson College President Dr. Jeremy McMillen said.

“This welcome back event specifically targets members of our community who have been affected by the pandemic and would benefit the most from completing high school, improving their English or obtaining valuable workforce certifications.”

The Fannin County Historical Commission will display quilts from four families in Windom. There will be quilts from different generations of each family.

Quilt patterns and quilt fabric change from one genera7/20/21 tion to the next. So, it will be interesting to see the difference between these generations.

The Creative Arts Center will be showing quilts created by Leo Ransom and Juanita Barnett. Leo is an artist with his quilts. He uses fabric like an artist uses paint. His quilts are portraits of famous people.

In the past he has done Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Einstein and many others. Juanita Barnet has studied quilting in Arizona for several years. Her display will reflect the totally different topics that she has studied in her travels.

The Fannin County Museum of History will be showing quilts from Fannin County. They will be displayed along with the museums extensive collection of Fannin County artifacts.

St. Marks Church in Honey Grove is a beautiful setting for anything from a wedding to a meeting or a quilt display. This year the church will be featuring antique and vintage quilts from the very talented Cotton Patch Quilt Guild in Greenville.

Sam Rayburn Library Museum will have quilts from the University of Texas, Doff Briscoe Center for American History’s quilt collection in Winedale.

This year the theme of the collection to be displayed is Floral Pattern Quilts.

The Bonham Visitor Center will be showing quilts from the community that our residents have graciously offer for our enjoyment.

There will also be on display at either the Visitor Center

or the Roy Floyd Community Center, of clothing and household items that have been made from quilts and pieced fabric.

The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site will have the 1850 “Prairie Rose” trapunto-styled quit which belonged to the Rayburn family as well as quits on loan from the Eisenhower Birthplace and some from the Eva Gentry Collection.

This is the first time the Eva Gentry Collection has been showed to the public and will be an opportunity to see some of a rare collection of North Texas African American material culture.

Four Winds Victorian Venue & Suites will have a display of family quilts as well as a class to learn to paint barn quilts which requires reservations on Friday and Saturday. This is a beautiful decorated Victorian Home to visit. A 10 percent discount is being offered to anyone who wants to stay overnight during the Quilt Hop. Call 896-407-4349.

A three-way tie for the fourth and final postseason berth in District 12-4A with Anna and Community had necessitated a two-game tiebreaker.

Only the play-in stood between Bonham and ending a postseason drought that had already reached a decade long.

Six years, two different head coaches and a drop from Class 4A to 3A: The streak has now reached 17 years.

Return Bockman, who as a freshman played on Bonham’s 2004 Region II-3A semifinalist team, now to the helm of the still struggling program.

“I am very excited to be back in charge of the girls basketball program,” said Bockman on June 30. “Everyone has been super supportive in my return and I just feel super blessed to have this opportunity.

“I feel like the program needs a push in the right direction and I want to do my part to see it be successful,” she said.

“After losing the play-in game and being so close to breaking the playoff curse in 2015, I am extremely determined to have the Lady Warriors back in the

In June, Bockman, who will also continue as Bonham’s head tennis coach but no longer have volleyball duties, had a chance to see both the present and future of the Lady Warriors basketball program.

She watched Bonham compete in Ector in an offseason league against a variety of local schools: 113A rivals Whitewright and Bells, 13-2A’s Sam Rayburn and Trenton, 23-1A’s Ector and Savoy, Texoma Christian School and Achille (Okla).

“We had our struggles against some good teams,” said Bockman. “[We] definitely [have] room to grow, but I was excited to see us pick up some wins and to see the potential that is there.

“We only have three returners; so several of the kids we will have playing this next season haven’t played in a couple of years.”

Dodd City junior Tori Dotson earned the player of the year award and a first-team selection at pitcher in the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 1A all-state softball awards for 2021.

Meanwhile, manager Bruce Mauppin garnered the coach of the year award, after guiding the Lady Hornets to their first State softball championship on June 2.

Seniors Dulaney Chapman and Dani Baccus of Dodd City also claimed first-team selections, respectively, at second base and in the outfield.

Additionally, Dodd City sophomore Lindsey Mauppin received an honorable mention at shortstop.

2019 Bonham-ex Jones garners all-conference softball recognition

Bonham alumna Shelby Jones earned second-team recognition from the American Midwest Conference for the 2021 softball season.

Jones hit .400 during the season with 48 hits and 12 RBI as a sophomore -- her second collegiate campaign -- for Williams Baptist University.

At Bonham, she finished as the school single-season record holder in runs scored, walks and stolen bases, hitting leadoff all four years on varsity.

Jones hit a career-best .500 at Bonham as a senior -- when she earned the all-district offensive superlative and a Class 3A all-state honorable mention from the Texas Sports Writers Association.

Jones ended her Bonham career with 102 stolen bases.
