by Fannin County native Robert Weddle, has long been out-of-print and only occasionally available from used book sellers. Thanks to a Rescuing Texas History grant from the Portal and in cooperation with Mr. Weddle’s children, the book can now be read online and is fully searchable.

View the book here: ark:/67531/ metapth1330313 The book chronicles the Caney Creek farmers, who, leaving their women and old folk to tend their farms, took their shotguns or squirrel rifles, mounted their plow horses and rode off to war.

The inspiration for the book was a collection of letters between Mr. Weddle’s maternal grandparents during the

Civil War. Mr. Weddle used the letters to illuminate the viewpoints of the rear-rank soldier of the Trans-Mississippi and his family. “The letters illuminate many facets of the war not ordinarily found in military histories: the inner struggle of men not convinced of the war’s validity and the resultant problem of desertion; the suffering of the soldiers who could not get clothing from home before winter set in; the struggles of the women to keep the farms going while their men were away, and their fears that Indian raids would be timed to coincide with a Federal offensive.”

The book has lovely illustrations, photos and maps. The Fannin County Historical Commission is so pleased to make this piece of Fannin County history available online, joining other books and newspapers relating to Fannin County on the Portal to Texas History.

Training for FCRW

Press Release - The Fannin County Republican Women will use the next regular meeting to receive training from County Clerk Tammy Biggar to become Deputy Voter Registrars.

Anyone who is interested in visiting and or joining the club are welcome to attend and participate in the training.

The meeting scheduled Monday, July 12, 2021 begins at 5:30 p.m. with a meet a greet. Members will bring a covered dish to share. The business meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. with the training to follow and concludes at 7:15 p.m.

Patriot Scholarship winners will be announced.

The Republican Women are awarding two $500 scholarships to local high school students. The Fannin County Republican Party will present two additional $500 Patriot scholarships for winning entries.

The FCRW continue to participate in Caring for America by collecting canned goods and non perishable food which will be donated to the local food pantry. Please bring any contribution to participate in this community service project.

Additionally, the FCRW is participating in the Border Patrol Service Project – donations of disposable plastic gloves, sunscreen, hand sanitizer wipes, insect repellent, and wound wash are being collected to send to the border.

Finding Happiness in the Lord

Bill Beasley “Happy are those people, whose God is the Lord” - Psalms 144:15 With the 4th of July serving as a kind of backdrop I have tried to point out the greatness of the country that you and I are privileged to call home. For a few weeks my articles have taken focus on freedom as we enjoy it in America. I am

proud to be an American, but I am prouder still to have the privilege of being a citizen of the kingdom of God. This relationship gives to me a loving God who provided the greatest freedom of all. Psalm 144:15 says it well in these words. “Happy are those people, whose God is the Lord. “ In support of this claim Psalms 95:3-7 tells us what a great God we have. He is our maker. He is our provider. He is our presence. He is our King. He is our Savior.

We are richly endowed. We are the people of his pasture. We are the sheep under his care. The depths of the earth are in His hands.

The mountain peaks are in His hands. And the sea be-

longs to Him. In summary He loves us. He looks to take care of us. Our needs are met. He places the spirit of joy, and peace, and happiness in our heart.

Furthermore, He gives to us the beatitudes found in Matthew 5:1–11 which have been called by many as “keys to happiness”.

To serve His presence is to experience His power and to be led by His Spirit is enough to put joy in our heart, a spring in our step and a glow on our face.

When joy seems to elude us, let us count anew our blessings, enjoy a fresh contact with Him, and He will restore the spirit of happiness.

Tuesday, July 6, 2021, Fannin County Commissioner Jerry Magness who was filling in for County Judge Randy Moore, had to ask for quiet from the very large group of Fannin County Citizens who filled the chamber and the adjoining lobby. He then called to order at 8:50 a.m., a special meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners. Quorum was established as all four of the Fannin County Commissioners were present. Note: The Fannin County Leader discovered after the meeting that Judge Moore was absent due to an annual Missions trip.

2. To Hold and Attend a Public Hearing to hear comments regarding change of zoning to the official Bois d’ Arc Lake Zoning map to remove Bonham Lake and Bonham City Limit properties inside the Bois d’Arc Lake 5,000-foot Buffer Zone that are under the permitting and jurisdiction of the City of Bonham: Commissioner Magness asked if there were any who would like to speak on this item. A citizen of Trenton, Tx residing at CR 4935 spoke to say that he researched this item and found out that the City of Bonham has zoning regulations on the properties in question and he believes there should not be two different sets of regulations applying to the Lake

Bonham properties and agrees that those properties should be removed from the Bois d’Arc Lake Zoning Map. After noone else came forward to speak on this, a motion to adjourn was made.

3. Adjourn: The Special Meeting was adjourned at 8:55 a.m.

On the same day at 9:00 a.m., Commissioner Magness called to order the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. He noted Quorum had been established.

In that role, CASA volunteers regularly visit their assigned child or sibling group and gather information from parents, other family, teachers, medical personnel, therapists and others in order to make recommendations to the court on what will be in the child’s best interest.

They prepare court reports and testify at court hearings too. Many volunteers successfully manage to volunteer while also working full time and spending time with their families.

Press Release - The Fannin 2/16/21 County Children’s Center is seeking volunteers for a variety of roles, including CASA advocates for children in foster care, CAC volunteers who supervise children and families at the center, Rainbow Room volunteers who organize clothing and other supplies, Honey Doers who help with minor repairs and maintenance and Hospitality Team who prepare food for various meetings and trainings.

Center (CAC) is another program of the Children’s Center. Compassionate CAC volunteers are needed to supervise children, youth and families who are at the center for interviews or counseling. Other volunteers are needed for tasks not directly working with children, such as organizing clothes in the Rainbow Room, helping with light repairs and maintenance of the building and preparing food for various meetings and trainings.

There will be an informational session on Tuesday, August 10 from 5:30 – 6:30 pm on Zoom. CASA Program Director Amanda McDonald and Community Development Director Andrea Lappin will present information about all the volunteer opportunities available at the center, as well as information about the application process and training requirements.

Attendance at the information session is not a requirement to become a volunteer, however, it is a helpful step to learning more about what it takes to be a volunteer and give an opportunity to ask questions.

Attending the info session will not obligate anyone to become a volunteer.

I have a recipe from a good friend of mine for probably around 20 years.

She recently posted a picture of this on her Facebook page and it looks really good!

Cheeseburger Casserole 1 lb. of hamburger meat 2 cans of tomato soup 1 c. of mozzarella cheese 2 c. of cheddar cheese 1 package of small shell pasta 1 small onion (optional) Cook and drain the pasta according to the package directions.

Next, brown the beef in a large skillet with garlic powder, salt and pepper. Also you can throw in a diced onion while browning the beef. Once beef is cooked, drain grease and toss in the pasta, soup, a little water and half of the cheese and mix until blended. Pour into a 9x13 greased baking dish and top with remaining cheese. Bake covered with foil in a 375 degree oven for 20 minutes. Then bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes to brown the cheese. Sometimes I also broil this for a few minutes to make it nice and toasty!

This sounds like a good week night dinner to me and I hope you will give this one a try! Thanks again Christie!

The next training sessions for CASA volunteers will start in August. Participants will gain knowledge and learn skills needed to become an advocate for abused children in foster care.

Participants will have 4 in-person sessions on August 24 & 31 and September 7 & 16 and there will be reading and online activities to be completed on their own time. At least 2 hours of court room observation in-person will also be required.

All who successfully complete the training will take the CASA oath in the Fannin County District Courtroom.

Applications are now being accepted for all types of volunteers at the Children’s Center.

JESUS TO THE CHURCH IN LAODICEA - Revelation 3:1422 [BSB]. “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Originator of God’s creation. I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm— neither hot nor cold—I am about to spew you out of My mouth! You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy and need nothing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, white garments so that you may be clothed and your shameful nakedness not exposed, and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. Those I love, I rebuke and discipline. Therefore, be earnest and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and dine with him, and he with Me. To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right to sit with Me on My throne, just as I overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Laodicea was the last of seven churches in Turkey to whom Jesus penned His letters in Revelation. It is widely believed that in addition to these being the seven churches in the then known world, they are also an archetype of the state of the church that would follow the ages until the return of Jesus Christ. In that vein, Laodicea would be like the church just prior to His return. Although we know that Laodicea was an actual church assembly during the time John wrote Revelation in approximately 90 AD, we also know that the Message to Jesus’ Church of believers is timeless and the same to all those who claim His Name. It cannot be denied that Jesus’ warning is for all those who have spiritual ears; He is calling to those who will listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit as He speaks to all churches and believers.

Laodicea was a wealthy community. Their economy was booming and their fiscal leadership was impeccable.

Devastated by an earthquake in around 60 AD, they were able to tell their Federal Government (Rome) that they would rebuild their city without their aid, and they did. They were a proud people that worked together to accomplish their goals. They had accumulated quite a nest egg; This church met regularly, had a substantial treasury, and probably gave liberally to local programs which permitted them a position of influence in the community. I think they must have been surprised by Jesus’ assessment of their church goals and accomplishments. “I KNOW YOUR WORKS. THEY ARE NOT HOT OR COLD. I WISH THEY WERE ONE OR THE OTHER, BUT BECAUSE YOU ARE LUKEWARM, I AM ABOUT TO SPEW YOU OUT OF MY MOUTH.” Laodicea well understood Jesus’ reference. They were a city that had no local water supply.

They brought in their water through a sophisticated aqueduct and clay pipe system. The water that entered the city was from hot springs and cold springs that, when mixed, created a putrid lukewarm mixture that was heavily charged with calcareous matter. The temperature of the water made it a breeding ground for bacteria that would affect the entire area.

Such was the state of Laodicea. It was unified in the matters of the world but had lost its purpose. The Great Commission that Jesus gave to His followers at the time of His ascension was that all His followers would have one foundational purpose. Laodicea was lost to their Lord’s purpose.

The Great Commission Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20

Current surveys from the past 5 years in the United States asked adults who said they were Christians if they believed in the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. Twenty-five percent of professing adult Christians could not remember what the Great Commission was, while 51% of those surveyed said they had never heard the term at all. This is not surprising as less than 20% in a 2020 survey of church attendees say they read the Bible. And when it comes to listening to the voice of the Spirit, 58% of those surveyed said they believed the Holy Spirit was only a symbol, not a real member of the Trinity. Jesus said The Holy Spirit – Ruach ha Kodesh (Breath of God) would fill us, give us eternal life and would “guide us into all truth.” John 16:13. “The Spirit of Truth, whom the world is not able to receive, because it does not see Him or know Him. But you know Him, for He abides with you, and He will be in you.” John 14:17. Many churches today share the doctrine of Laodicea. They are a place where people gather to perhaps be good citizens, do good works for the community, or simply identify and have fellowship with their friends. No harm in that if we, as the Body of Christ, have not lost our purpose – to tell everyone the Good News of Jesus Christ – The One who can save us from “this body of death.”

Romans 7:24. We cannot hear the voice of our Savior if we cannot hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. Are we, as the Body of Christ, willing to repent? Are we willing to agree with Jesus? Jesus said He wrote this letter because He loves us, therefore He corrects us when we are on the wrong path.

Is the sickness that has grown in the Body of Jesus Christ affecting everyone around us. Have we lost our way? “The work of God is this: to trust in the One He has sent. (John 6:29). Jesus said, “I am The Way, The Truth and the Life.

No one comes to God the Father except through Me.” John 14:17. He is knocking! Are we willing to let Jesus into His Church?

Original Park Permanently Closes for Construction of New Bridge

July 9, 2021 – Lewisville, TX – The new temporary Ladonia Fossil Park on FM 2990 north of the City of Ladonia, TX is now open. Upper Trinity Regional Water District (UTRWD) has completed construction of the new fossil park that includes a large parking lot and an easier walking path to the North Sulphur River for fossil hunters. The fossil park is located on the north side of the North Sulphur River on the east of FM 2990.

The original Ladonia Fossil Park on Hwy 34 is now closed to allow for the construction of a new bridge over the future Lake Ralph Hall. The original park is in the reservoir footprint and will be inundated when the reservoir fills. Signs have been installed to direct fossil hunters to the new, temporary park.

“The District recognizes the importance of the Ladonia Fossil Park to the local community and visitors alike,” said Larry N. Patterson, Executive Director of Upper Trinity. “Both the District and City of Ladonia are working to select another, permanent location downstream of the reservoir for the Ladonia Fossil Park, where fossil hunters can continue safe and easy access to the river bottom after the new reservoir is built.”

A new, permanent fossil park will be built after the lake is complete. By offering different locations to access the river, the temporary and future parks will provide opportunities for additional and untapped fossil discoveries.

Funeral Services for James Tyler Mitchell, age 29, of Dallas, Texas were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2021 at Fearless House Church at 301 W Davis St, McKinney, TX 75069 under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Pastor Cameron Andonie officiated. Burial followed at 3:00 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2021, at Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham, Texas. Tyler passed away unexpectedly on July 1, 2021, at his home in Dallas, Texas.

Tyler was born on November 14, 1991, in Plano, Texas to James and Beth Mitchell. Tyler grew up in Plano, Texas. He was a Plano East Senior High School graduate, class of 2010. Tyler was a beloved son, grandson, brother, cousin, nephew, and friend. He loved to work and was an avid businessman. Tyler also loved basketball, the Sopranos, and his dog Vito. He will be forever loved and missed by his family. This is not good-bye, until we meet again.

Tyler is survived by his parents James and Susan of Bonham, Texas, and Beth Rogers, of Arlington, Texas; siblings, Ryan, Amber, and Dylan; grandparents, Jerry and Edith Mitchell of Palestine, Texas, Kay and Pedro Fagundes of Terceira, Azores and Reacy Billingsley of Plano, Texas.

He is also survived by many other family members and friends.

Pallbearers were Mike Billingsley, Mikie Billingsley, Ryan Garcia, Dylan Rogers, Caleb Hamilton, and Devin Williams.

Former Pastor Don Gallatin, Mr. Jimmy Phillips, and Pastor Jase Waller officiated. Interment followed at Forest Grove Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Will Morris, Taylor Morris, Roger Morris, Jeff Bevill, Bill Hurst, and John Dillow.

Nellene (Richie) Phillips was born in Telephone, TX on September 5, 1920, to John Wesley Richie and Sue Ellen (Baker) Richie. She passed away Monday, July 5, 2021, at Seven Oaks Nursing Center in Bonham, TX. Nellene married William A. Phillips on October 16, 1937, in Dodd City, TX; he preceded her in death on June 16, 2006.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother.

Nellene was a homemaker, a great cook, and took care of her family with pride. She was involved in the community and the Telephone Baptist Church where she was a member.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, brothers; LC Wright and James Wright, sons; Thomas Webber and John Cicala.

She is survived by daughter, Janet Jumper of Elgin, Texas, son, Jeffrey Overton and wife Karen of Frisco, Texas and daughter, Cynthia Gibbons, sister; Thelma Parrish of Royse City, Texas, twin brother Bobby Wayne Wright and wife Pat of Paris, Texas, grandchildren that she dearly loved; grandson, Brandon Lee Scarbrough and wife Heidi of Greenville, Texas, granddaughters; Jessica Jumper of Elgin, Texas, Kristin Gibbons, Chloe Pittman, Jordan Roach and husband Taylor of Fort Worth, Texas, Great-grandchildren she loved tremendously; Andrew Lee, Caroline Grace, McKenzie Hope Scarbrough, all of Greenville, Texas and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mary lived a conservative, simple life. She faced her obstacles in life standing on the promises of God. In her younger years, she worked as a bookkeeper and raised five children. In her later years, she worked as a caregiver for many elderly.

She was full of life and never ran from a challenge. She taught her children the love of Jesus and right from wrong. Mary was always ready with a scripture that would help anyone get through their tribulation. She was a faithful and obedient child of God. Mary was a loving and attentive Grandmother who spoiled her grandchildren at any given opportunity. She was always ready with a snack at any moment or ready to jump in the car to go to the store to supply them with whatever was desired or take them to the lake for a swim. Grandmother Mary was the definition of love and kindness to her grandchildren.

Mary Jane Wright has earned her jewels in her crown in the presence of God.

Left to cherish his memories are granddaughters, Brooke Bellido and husband of Dallas, TX and Laci Hardin and husband Edwardo of Bonham, TX; great granddaughters, Justyce Ojedo and Brooklin Rivera; sister Elaine Gibbs of Ivanhoe, TX; and brother, Duane Hosick and wife Ginger of Plano, TX. PEGGY SUE OWENS FRANKLIN JUNE 21, 1945 – JULY 3, 2021

Peggy Sue Owens Franklin, age 76, passed away July 3, 2021 at her home in Ladonia. She was born to Cleveland McMillan Owens and Anna Lee Montgomery Owens on June 21, 1945 in Commerce.

Peggy was raised and attended school in Ladonia with her twin brother Michael and big brother Billy Don. Ladonia and Pecan Gap school districts consolidated in 1960, and Peggy graduated as a Fannindel Falcon with the class of 1963. After graduating, she worked as a switchboard operator for Gulf States United Telephone Company until she married her high school sweetheart, Doug Franklin, in 1965. After that, all her time and attention were focused on supporting Doug in his many work and community endeavors, managing their busy household, and raising their two sons, Scott and Shaun. She later became MiMi to her many grandchildren and was the chief babysitter and provider of after school care for all of them. Everyone who visited their gracious home was amazed at how beautifully decorated and maintained it was, inside and out, despite the many children who were a constant presence.

Peggy was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Ladonia and was also a member of United Methodist Women. She was a key organizer and hostess of the annual Lord’s Acre dinner and auction. She served on the Ladonia Beautification Committee and was the secretary/treasurer for the Center Point Cemetery Association for many years. She enjoyed gardening and photography, and took thousands of photographs of her children and grandchildren over the years.

She is survived by her son Scott and wife Cynthia of Pecan Gap, Texas; son Shaun and wife Michelle of Greenville, Texas; and sister-in-law Janice and husband Kelly Connell of Pecan Gap. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren: Tyler, Katie, Christopher, Brendan, Lyndsey, Payton, Jace, Brinkley, Luke, and Andrea and two great-granddaughters, Kambrie and Fallon, as well as nephews Jeromy, Michael, and Billy and nieces Kacey and Shelley.

She was preceded in death by her husband Doug, her parents, brothers Billy Don Owens and twin Michael Hugh Owens and niece Elisa Owens.

The family would like to give a special thanks to her athome caretakers: Debra Thompson, Crystal Daniels, and Stella Rogers, as well as the caring staff from Kindred Hospice.

The funeral was conducted by Reverend Mark Bradley at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 8, 2021 at First United Methodist Church of Ladonia (301 TX-34 aka 301 W. Bonham in Ladonia). Her grandchildren served as pallbearers: Tyler Franklin, Chris Franklin, Brendan Morrow, Payton Franklin, Jace Franklin, and Xavier Brown. Interment followed at Center Point Cemetery just outside of Ladonia.

I am a member of the Association, but can take no credit for the wonderful work that other Association members do to care for Oakwood. I do know that it is only by dedicated daily attention that Oakwood continues to be in the condition it is in.

It takes not only daily attention but also money. If you have not contributed this year, you can send your check to Oakwood Cemetery Association, P. O. Box 96, Honey Grove 75446. Several trees died because of the freeze and need to be removed. There are other unexpected expenses this year. The first to speak was a citizen residing in Windom who advised all interested parties to listen to the recording from June 22nd which can be obtained from the County’s website for better understanding of both sides of the issue.

She encouraged calm attitudes to prevail and appeared to be in favor of the permit’s existence. The second speaker, a citizen from Honey Grove was in opposition to the per-

mit and was unhappy that when the County Court became split over the passing of this permit on the 22nd, the agenda item was not tabled and discussed further but instead was passed with a 3-2 vote. The third speaker questioned the feasibility of the permit, named three problems existing with the permit and asked it to be retracted. The fourth speaker from Ravenna stated that most people are vehemently opposed, and the permit is pointless as flood plain establishment is accomplished through other entities such as the office that issues

Discussion, consideration and action to approve Fannin County Commissioners 2021 Road Reports: Commissioner Lane reported she has 119 miles of roads with many in need of repair, three bridges closed on CR 1320, CR 1020 and CR 4020 with the bridges on 1320 and 1020 scheduled to be completely replaced next year.

She hopes to rent a reclaimer this summer to make repair on roads. Her crew is currently dealing with malfunctioning equipment.

Commissioner Self reported he has 226.63 miles of road with 57 bridges and one of those bridges is closed. He has 3065 culverts

in fairly good condition. The amount of money necessary to maintain roads at the current level would be $936,000.

The number of traffic control devices defaced, pulled down or stolen is 10 plus/minus stop signs and twenty road signs.

The roads slated to open this year are CRs 4922, 4923 and 4924. The bridge on 3810 is slated to be replaced by Tx Dot. Commissioner Magness stated the roads in his precinct are in fairly good condition and though there are some out in the country that are in need of repair, they are working as hard as they can to get all the roads in good condition. Precinct 3 started out with 335 miles of road but with some road closures, that dropped to 318. CR 2730 will be paved by North Texas at no cost to the County and CR 2715 will be reworked this summer costing around a million and a half. North Texas gave Precinct 3 and 4 a good amount of money to help with the cost. Slated to be worked on are CRs 2730, 2750, 2980, 2745 and 2610 which should come to about $750,000.

Commissioner Lackey mentioned work being done on culverts, gravel roads and attention given to potholes.

Overall, he said his roads are in pretty good shape with a culvert needing replaced on CR 2900. He said CR 3710

Culvert work is being done on CR 2950. After reports were given, motion was made, seconded and passed to accept reports.

14. Discussion regarding Fannin County Development Permit criteria and guidelines: Commissioner Self began by saying that there are a lot of questions on this as to what qualifies as a permit and said it should be structured better. Fannin County Development Service Director Di Hopkins spoke to explain how she came about submitting the proposal for the permit. She gave a detailed explanation that can be summed up in her following statement: “Previously some subdivisions have been cited without consideration for flood plains. Residents have built with no engineering or permitting in flood plains.

These things can be both expensive and cause safety issues for citizens of Fannin County.

Persistent Peaking Postseason: 2021 campaign marked 10-year anniversary of Bonham’s deepest run in Texas high school baseball playoffs

By Rich Hilliard State championships in June brought a natural end to the 2021 high school baseball season in Texas.

With the 2020 season having been cut short -long before the playoffs -- due to COVID-19 spread concerns, this spring equated a return to normalcy The postseason also marked the 10-year anniversary of Bonham’s deepest run into the baseball playoffs: the regional semifinals.

The historic season started with a new manager for the 2011 Purple Warriors -- for whom the postseason had not been an experience during their high school careers.

Gary Cosper had been hired to assist with football and baseball during the 2010 offseason, before an unexpected opening elsewhere on the athletic staff at Bonham allowed the alum also to resume his managing career.

“I think they thought I was crazy,” said Cosper. “I think of the first team meeting.

When (the field) was wet, we would practice on the tennis courts ...

“We had to figure out our team identity and get everyone in the right positions,” he said. “We identified we had a real ace in [senior] Shelby Williams and an outstanding infield.

You have to find a guy who could win a big game.

“When Shelby was on the mound, we were set, with good defense.”

No foreshadowing of what was to come occurred during the early going: Bonham reached 10-3A play with a .500 record, run-ruled Commerce in its district opener -- and then dropped its remaining three 10-3A first-half contests.

“I remember during the regular season we didn’t play as good as we were expected to, or knew that we could,” said Tyler Edwards, a junior on the team, “but when we got to the second round of district play, everything started clicking for us more each game.”

Bonham doubled its 10-3A win total in the second half: going 2-2, finishing play at 3-5 and forcing a play-in for the third and final available district postseason berth.

at Celina. Williams got the win with a 10-strikeout, no-earned-run four-hit complete game.

The win returned Bonham to the baseball postseason for the first time since its 2006 area-round advance -- history-making, at that time, for its length -- and, unknowingly, launched the school’s deepest run in the playoffs in the sport to date.

The Purple Warriors started with a bi-district best-of-three series win over Aubrey: 5-10, 13-2, 11-10.

“When we got to the first round of the playoffs,” said Edwards, “we were not expected to keep up with Aubrey and we lost the first game pretty one-sided.

“When we played the doubleheader the following day, we were able to turn the tables by playing good baseball that we hadn’t played all year ...,” he said.

“After that, we had a little more confidence and, with that, ... some of the best team baseball I was ever part of.”

Amongst Cosper’s memories from the Aubrey series included a couple involving seniors: the walkoff game-winning hit in Game 3 by Josh Samford and Hunter Herriage going 5-of-6 after an earlier injury had him in the outfield that season and not on the mound.

Williams got the completegame win in Game 2 against Aubrey, while junior Ryan Woodruff went the distance in the ensuing seriesclinching victory.

“I’ve always believed you throw your best pitcher in Game 2: it’s a momentum game, said Cosper. “I guess (the team) believed and bought into it.

“In round one, we were beat by Aubrey in Game 1 and were down 5-0 in Game 3,” he said. “I remember thinking: All we did last week will go out the window.

“But they [that Bonham team] were a tough bunch.

We really didn’t start playing [well] until that Aubrey series -- that sticks out. It has a special place in my memories.”

The Purple Warriors advanced to play Carrollton Ranchview in the area round -- but it would be hard to imagine a worse start to a series: Host Bonham trailed, 10-1, after two innings in the opener.

“In the second round, I remember getting down ... in the first game in the first two innings, but we were able to not allow another run the rest of the game,” said Edwards, who pitched six innings of two-hit relief in the Ranchview opener. “...[W]e slowly chipped away each inning -- adding runs every inning -- coming all the way from behind to win.”

The Warriors scored 12 unanswered runs to rally for a 13-10 opener win, before run-ruling Ranchview, 122, the next day during a 16-hit effort on the road in Game 2 “We were able to carry that big come from behind win into the next game,”

said Edwards, “with, once again, great team work to advance to the third round.”

The series sweep had assured Bonham of its deepest advance in the playoffs, but the Warriors were not finished -although, again, not without an early setback.

In the regional quarterfinals, Bonham had to overcome a seriesopening 11-8 loss -- and the weather.

“In the third round, we were once again underdogs and we lost big in the first game to Princeton,” said Edwards.

“Princeton had won 25 games and beat Celina the week before,” said Cosper.

“Probably nobody gave us a chance after getting beat in Game 1.”

“I remember we almost didn’t find a field to play at [to complete the series] because of a lot of rain the night before. We drove to Princeton and then drove to McKinney and were able to play at their fields,” said Edwards. “The first game [of the doubleheader], we were able to tie the series and in the second game the final score was the exact same, 6-5, with us once again pulling off another come from behind upset victory.”

Said Cosper: “I remember looking at Josh Lehde [an assistant coach on that team] and saying: What did we just do!”

Williams went all eight innings of Game 2 for the win and Woodruff garnered it in Game 3 of

a point in that season where we weren’t all that good.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years,” he said . “They were a fun group. I still run into them occasionally. It’s always a pleasure.”

“Those five seniors: You have got to have leadership and they did pretty darn good stuff.”

After their near miss in 2009 at making the postseason, the run made the 2011 seniors’ final month of high school about more than caps, gowns and graduation.

“Making playoffs after coming so close years prior was a huge relief, knowing that all our years of hard work and dedication had finally paid off,” said Lane Fox, one of the seniors.

“But getting to experience our playoff run with an amazing group of guys,” said Fox, “was by far the best way I could have ever imagined ending my senior season.

“We weren’t the best, but we peaked at the right time and believed in one another and pushed each to be better each and every game. I believe that is what took us as far as it did.”

A clash with a perennial postseason powerhoue awaited: Texarkana Pleasant Grove, the defending Class 3A champion and an eventual State semifinalist in 2011.

“The following series didn’t go well for us, though, as we lost the first two games to Pleasant Grove who went on to the state tournament,” said Edwards of the 16-4, 7-0 sweep, “but it was one memorable year of baseball to say the least. “[W]e were able to make a very memorable and exciting run in the playoffs,” he said.

Cosper noted that Bonham played 10 postseason games in 2011 during that memorable May. The manager noted that Williams struck out 29 in 35 postseason innings.

The manager also noted in the postseason: junior Austin Ashlock had 20 hits during the run; senior Dalton Cagle, hit .419; and the team batting average equated a .332.

“I was amazed at that,” Bonham said Cosper of the team hitting statistic. “There was

Robertson & Simpson law firm and one who continually works closely with Cole Title, he believes his insight can be helpful.

He gave a history of the 2004 & 2011 Flood Plain Ordinances and explained how he sees this permit and its process as theoretically being based on existing Fannin County ordinance but believes that the permit and the permit approved do not exactly follow the ordinance. He explained further that the authority given the court by the 2011 ordinance is to require permit for lands located in areas of special flood hazard. He read how to get a flood plain development permit and all the many documents needed to have in hand before paying the thirty dollars to obtain the permit.

He read how to determine if an area is in a special flood hazard locale (look at the flood plain map, Article 4, section B5 of the 2011 ordinance.) After much referral to the ordinances and other sources, he concluded that he would be happy to be on a review board to research a permit.

There were two speakers after he spoke that basically agreed that if a development permit is needed it needs to be created with more clarity, discussion and input from informed citizens who have read up on the 2011 ordinance.

16. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Resolution stating disapproval of the Fannin Central Appraisal District’s 2022 Budget: Commissioner Lackey stated he had gone to the budget meeting of the Fannin CAD a few weeks back and explained why he was in disapproval with the high raises given in the budget and the extreme disparities that exist between the salary level there and the salary level currently existing for County employees. District Attorney Richard Glaser spoke in favor of the salary raises that were approved by the Fannin Central Appraisal District Board and the difficulty of retaining knowledgeable, trained employees who are constantly lured away by higher pay from other Coun-

ties. A citizen spoke to voice his impassioned view why the resolution of disapproval should be passed. More discussion ensued regarding the loss of employees to higher pay in other areas with Commissioner Magness stating he would be abstaining from the vote as he is a member on the Fannin CAD’s board, a motion was made by Commissioner Self, seconded by Commissioner Lackey and passed to approve the Resolution.

17 Discussion, consideration and action to approve Interlocal Agreement between Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) and Fannin County regarding E-911 Public Safety Answering Point Services: Representatives from the TCOG came to the podium to state there has been no changes from last year to this year and motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously.

Discussion, consideration and action regarding the removal of Bonham Lake and Bonham City Limit properties from the Bois d’Arc Lake Zoning map that are within the 5,000-foot buffer of Bois d’Arc Lake: After some discussion, Commissioner Self made the motion to approve the removal of Bonham Lake and Bonham City Limit properties from the Bois d’Arc Lake Zoning map and motion was seconded by Commissioner Lackey and passed unanimously.

19. Discussion regarding animal control in unincorporated areas of Fannin County: Commissioner Self began the discussion of the problem of animals being dumped on county roads and stated he needed to know what to tell people as to where they can take these animals. A citizen offered the suggestion to look for nonprofit organizations who will spay them for free via on-line searches. An answer was not forthcoming and it was noted this would need to be addressed again.

ing company, Endurance American Insurance Company, regarding restoration work on the Fannin County Courthouse: District Attorney Glaser asked questions regarding this item wanting to know what the text of this letter will involve and what the problem is. Commissioner Lackey answered that it is mainly addressing the speed of work and not the quality of the work and later added the problem with the unavailability of certain stone/ stone masons that was only discovered to be needed after the work began. Attorney Glaser asked what amount of money the delays of Bryco-Bryant that have incurred since February has cost the county. Discussion ensued that included Fannin Purchasing Agent Michelle Case and Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple along with a citizen experienced in construction; regarding the rent being paid that is costing the county and the consequences that may occur with the sending of the letter. Motion was made by Commissioner Lane, seconded

by Commissioner Self and did not pass as the vote was 2 to 2 in favor of sending the letter.

21. Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills: Motion was made and passed to approve.

22. Comments by County Commissioners: Commissioner Lane expressed her delight in the show of interest from the citizens who attended the meeting and encouraged continued involvement. Commissioner Self thanked all for attending and their patience in staying through a long meeting and the input that was given by all. Commissioner Magness echoed the appreciation of public interest in the meeting and said those who say they want to be involved need to prove it by showing up in order to have a say in what’s going on. Commissioner Lackey had the same attitude towards the public show of interest and made further statements about the flood plain and permits. He thanked all for coming and made a statement that he votes like how he believes the citizens want him to vote and thanked the public for the opportunity to serve.

He also noted that though there were differences of opinions among his colleagues, they maintain friendship by realizing everyone is entitled to their own opinions in business.
